You mentioned Dirt as a new franchise but not Mass Effect for 2007? Cool article though
  • The_Tingler - July 17, 2013 4:29 p.m.

1998, agreed. Half-Life, Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid, Baldur's Gate, Starcraft... amazing. That was also the first full year I had my first PC and I believe also netted me my first proper console with the N64, so important for me personally too.

Also Thief: The Dark Project!! One of my favourite games of all time!
  • sephex - July 17, 2013 4:22 a.m.

I would've selected way different years. 2001 and 2005, the latter being my personal favourite. 2010 gave us Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, Heavy Rain, Bayonetta, God of War III, Vanquish and a whole lot of other stuff. 2007, 1994 and 2004 remain. And of course, you can't argue with 1998 being the best year ever!

Super Mario 64 also came out in North America in 1996, not just Japan.

How did you forget the Dreamcast from the 1998 entry? (JP release)

    I second that 1991.
  • Rub3z - July 16, 2013 2:38 p.m.

  • SwirlyGreenLogo - July 16, 2013 12:31 p.m.

    Honestly, I'm a little surprised 2001 isn't even mentioned.
  • pl4y4h - July 16, 2013 10:42 a.m.

Whatever year Mario Party 3 came out is the best year to me
  • Jdub9064 - July 16, 2013 7:43 a.m.

  • brickman409 - July 16, 2013 11:58 p.m.

2001 definitely should be on this list and 2011 should be kicked off.
  • mafyooz - July 16, 2013 1:16 a.m.

I think the best year was 1984, purely because that's when I got my first system. A 78k cassette loading Acorn Electron my parents somehow thought was more "educational" than the other home computers, complete with a Pacman clone, a text game called Sphinx Adventure that I never did manage to complete, and Defender. Happy days :)
  • BaraChat - July 15, 2013 8:44 p.m.

1998 definitely deserved first place. In my book, 2011 is second, but it's a tough choice...

Wow. Looking back on it all, I've realised that I've been a (small) part of the history of gaming. Well, I didn't play a part per say, but I've seen it all happen. I supported the franchises I loved and watched them grow, as well as see new games come out of no where and suddenly become classics. I find it fascinating how I've been alive to see such monumental years of video game history unfold before my eyes. It makes me proud to be a gamer.
