Platypus combines old-school gaming with a creative, unique world, delivered courtesy of superbly claymated visuals - which is a nice touch we don't see enough of in today's gaming world. Too bad the game itself is as simple and ordinary as any other shooter we've played.
Originally an online PC game, Platypus for the PSP isn't much of an upgrade. It's a 2D airship shooter that flies across several stages that sadly all play just as routinely as the first. Even the backgrounds are similar for the first half of the game. Other than the pretty sweet boss fights at the end of each stage, enemies are all the same, and their tactics are no different than when you first encounter them, making the whole game pretty much ditto after a few rounds. And, unfortunately, that's how you're going to be able to soar through this game - no strategy, it's all about rinse and repeat method. We don't expect to need a chessmaster's mind to progress through a twich-based shooter, but a little something to deepen the strategy - or a plot, while we're at it - would have been welcome.
