Mortal Kombat has been shocking gamers and worrying parents since I was in the fourth grade, so I figured I was ready for the gratuitous violence of the next entry, Mortal Kombat X. This title takes the iconic fighting game into the next generation, and that includes upgrading the insanely bloody combos and Fatalities, along with more shocking X-Ray moves, attacks that I thought I was prepared for. I was so sure about my preparedness when I saw one of the new character’s testicles explode after being hit in the crotch. Mortal Kombat really has stepped up its game for these new consoles.
Beyond the anatomically accurate gore--including a Fatality that cut Sub-Zero in half to make an impressively detailed cross section of bone and organs--Mortal Kombat really seems to be pushing the series forward. After the timeline-altering game that preceded it, MKX moves a couple decades into the future, which explains why the E3 roster had four new characters, with only Sub-Zero and Scorpion returning in this demo. The aforementioned ball buster is Cassie Cage, a young woman that’s seemingly the daughter of Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage, which would explain her fascination with punching folks between their legs.
She’s the standout of the new faces, but all of them give a sense of freshness to the game, as do the increasingly interactive levels. MKX learned a few lessons from the developer’s last game, Injustice, which is evident in the very interactive backgrounds. You can fling barrels at opponents, or bound out of the corner of the screen with a quick button press, making fights more dynamic than ever. MKX is looking to bring a lot of vitality to the franchise in 2015, along with many, many more ruptured testicles.
