Game music of the day: Mortal Kombat The Album

Game: Mortal Kombat: The Album

Song: All of them

Composer: The Immortals

You got me: this isn't so much game music as it is music inspired by a game, but y'know what? It's so hilariously amazing/awful that every living thing should be required to listen to it at least thirty times.

Long ago, when dinosaurs still roamed arcades and the Seattle grunge look was beginning to spread across the US, Mortal Kombat stood toe to toe with Street Fighter in terms of popularity and financial bankability. However, the savvy marketers at Midway figured the one thing SF didn't have was a cheesy techno album about its fighters, so they contracted musicians most known for their work with Lords of Acid (that album art is way NSFW) to do just that. Each and every one is a musical wonder that begs for repeat listening. The lyrics, the beats, everything is a work of ridiculous art.

Above: Sub-Zero (Chinese Ninja Warrior) is undoubtedly the most well known

Above: Raiden's may be the silliest of them all. "He's tall, that's cause he flies, the superman with eternal life!"

Above: Kano is apparently "in danger, a fallen angel"

Above: Sonya Blade gives a first-person account of why she's so cool (answer: she's 26 and on her way)

Above: And then the Techno Syndrome song that actually saw radio play

Above: And the BEST - Scorpion is a lost soul bent on revenge. Seriously, listen to the whole thing

But why today? Why, if you listen to TalkRadar or follow us on Twitter, you may know it's my birthday, and I wanted to do something extremely specific that normally wouldn't qualify for a GMOTD. Plus, I actually bought this CD on my 15th birthday... which is now officially half my life ago. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to sweep up all the dust my rotting corpse is kicking up.

Anyone know how a guy can get his hands on a physical or digital copy of the original "Techno Syndrome" track these days? It's not on iTunes to my knowledge and $40 on Amazon for a CD seems kinda steep. Definitely worth it for the nostalgia alone, but hoping to find a cheaper solution. Thx!!

Awesome work Brett! I've been listening to GMOTD for quite some time now, but only today I've decided to join the forums to support you guys! Anyway, just wanted to drop by to say what an awesome work you´re doing with gmotd, specially with this MK cd, which I became addicted to when I was a kid! S-W-E-E-T I say!

I'm guilty of both owning this and listening to it willfully

This is out-friggin'-standing! I always loved this album for the crazy over-the-top nonsense that it is. As a matter of fact, when I was a DJ my freshman year of college, I used to open my radio show with the Mortal Kombat theme song every week. Of couse...back then it was new...and....shit... Now I just feel old. Damn.

How the hell have I managed to spell "Kombat" wrong 3 times!?! Where's the extra "a" come from? Curse my crap typing skills!

All the songs on this album are the most listened to tracks on my iPod. Johnny Cage Prepare Yourself and Sub Zero Chinese Ninja Warrior are by far my favourites. I can't help but sing along to the line "Mortal Komabat's on today, Mortal Komabat all the way, Mortal Komabat is here to stay... WHOOOAAA Johnny Cage is not afraid to die!". It's so cheesy yet bloody awesome!

Ever since I watched the Mortal Kombat movie in the theater as a child, it has been my dream to have a fight while 'Techno Syndrome' is playing in the background. It is a genuinely awesome song.

You have no idea how happy I am to see this as the game music of the day. I used to have this album lying around somewhere, but I couldn't find it so I re-downloaded it about a week ago. Seeing this just after makes me a happy, happy man. The music is genuinely fun to listen to and Mortal Kombat has always been my favorite fighting game series.
  • FETALJUICE - November 13, 2010 4:49 p.m.

I can never go a day without listening to Chinese Ninja Warrior. This album kicks so much ass!
