Less fantasy than The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty , Hector A nd T he Search For Happiness should give a British makeover to the formulaic 'westerner experiences other cultures' model.

The Breach

Plot: Lionsgate has fast-tracked this adaptation of Patrick Lee’s 2009 novel, which sees ex-con Travis Chase discovering a crashed 747 full of murdered passengers, including the President’s wife. They also uncover a secret war as the apocalypse draws ever closer.

The Borderlands

Genre: Horror

Plot: British horror The Borderlands uses found footage to show a Vatican investigation into paranormal activity in the West Country. We loved it at FrightFest.

Birdman

Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu

Cast: Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Keaton.

Genre: Comedy

Plot: Michael Keaton is pretty perfect casting as washed-up actor Riggan Thompson, once famous for playing an iconic superhero, ‘Birdman’. Preparing to take the helm of a new Broadway play, Riggin must overcome family drama and perform. Any and all references to Burton’s Batman will be greatly appreciated.

The Babadook

Genre: Horror

Plot: Reading to kids at bedtime has never caused so much commotion. Oz horror flick The Babadook follows a single mum who realises that the nightmares of her out-of-control six year old might be true. Cue spiky storybook monsters that go bump in the night.

Genre: Technological Thriller

Plot: Dredd writer Alex Garland makes his directorial debut and tackles artificial intelligence and romance in low-budget thriller Ex-Machina . A 24 year old coder participates in an experiment with a beautiful robot (Vikander) at his internet boss’ mountain retreat. Not to be confused with the DC comic book series of the same name.

Plot: Sci-fi I Origins sees unconvincing molecular biologist Ian (Pitt) and his lab partner Karen (Marling) researching eyes and asking existential questions. Astrid Bergés-Frisbey stars as a model love-interest – with pretty peepers.

Happy Christmas

Plot: Swanberg’s festive follow-up to Drinking Buddies stars Anna Kendrick as a disaster sibling moving to Chicago to live with older bro Jeff (played by Swanberg himself). Girls' Lena Dunham plays Jenny’s high-school friend and the director’s son makes his acting debut as Jeff’s toddler.
