Ann and King Kong - King Kong (1933)

The Strange Relationship: "It was Beauty killed the Beast".

Kong takes one for big hairy dudes everywhere when he pursues the beautiful Ann Darrow (Fay Wray). He's even willing to battle dinosaurs, machine guns and biplanes to keep his girl. That's what we call dedication, gents.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? He might be tall, dark and very outdoorsy, but boy oh boy would Kong be one possessive partner. Plus, good luck finding a tux in his size.

Daisy and Benjamin - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

The Strange Relationship: Benjamin (Brad Pitt) and Daisy (Cate Blanchett) share an epic romance, one that lasts an entire lifetime. If only they'd shared quite the same lifetime…

As she ages, his body gets younger, giving them only a few fleeting years where they can meet in the middle.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? What seems quirky and charming in Fincher's gorgeously weird movie would definitely not be acceptable out in the real world.

The elderly Daisy giving her toddler beau a smooch? Someone would be dialling social services faster than you can say 'inappropriate'.

Neytiri and Jake - Avatar (2009)

The Strange Relationship: This Pocahontas for the CGI generation sees paraplegic war vet Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) falling head over blue heels for Na'vi warrior princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).

Shame that Jake's been using a Na'vi avatar to hang out with his girl, and his real body is lying in a pod back at the human camp. The human camp that's trying to destroy the Na'vis...

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? There's no real difference between this relationship and couples who meet on World Of Warcraft (except maybe the use of a slightly bigger avatar).

They could have an online wedding and live happily ever after. Until he met a big-boobed Elf Princess that is.

Susan and Joe - Meet Joe Black (1998)

The Strange Relationship: It should have been so simple. Susan (Claire Forlani) meets a cute guy in a coffee shop, he turns up at her house, bonds with her family and they fall in love.

One small problem - he's actually Death inhabiting the body of a hottie (Brad Pitt) and he's come to claim her father's soul. Pretty weird, as they go.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? Their coupledom is greatly helped by the face that Death manages to find such a handsome body to live in. Can you imagine introducing him to your mates if he was all robe and scythe?!

R and Julie - Warm Bodies (2013)

The Strange Relationship: Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer do Twilight with a sense of humour in Jonathan Levine's tale of undead star-crossed lovers.

Walking corpse R finds himself enamoured with the gun-wielding, very much alive Julie and, in a fine example of the power of Stockholm Syndrome, she starts falling for him too.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? It's hard to imagine that romance would be on anyone's mind in the case of a zombie apocalpyse, but saying that we've definitely met men with worse conversational skills than the monosyllabic R, so we'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Scott and Ramona - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

The Strange Relationship: Scott Pilgrim's (Michael Cera) persistent pursuit of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) pays off and the young lovebirds settle in for that honeymoon period of holding hands and beaming at each other (or whatever it is that happy couples do).

Except. It turns out that before you can date the lovely Ms. Flowers, you have to fight off her seven evil exes. And we don't mean passive-aggressively snark at in the pub. We mean fight fight. Nunchucks and everything.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? We reckon so. After all, everyone's got history. Ramona's is just more... present than most.

Scott just shows that if you want to get the girl, sometimes you have to become a video game hero.

WALL-E and EVE - WALL-E (2008)

The Strange Relationship: The last trash compactor robot on Earth meets the android girl of his dreams in Pixar's sob-fest love story.

Hostile EVE and loveable WALL-E might seem incompatible on first meeting, but when EVE goes into standby mode, WALL-E shows his dedication by sticking by his switched-off lady through thick and thin.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? If this is what robot romance is like, we are officially on board. These two might not be technically human, but they have more heart than most.

Lars and Bianca - Lars And The Real Girl (2007)

The Strange Relationship: He's a socially inept introvert with a Tom Selleck moustache and great taste in knitwear; she's a wheelchair-bound Brazilian/Danish missionary.

Oh yeah, and she's an anatomically correct sex doll.

Lars (Ryan Gosling) thrills his family when he announces he's met his dream girl, but everyone is left a wee bit scared an uncomfortable when doll-friend Bianca arrives at the dinner table.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? Probbaly not for long - having one-sided conversations is bound to get a bit tedious after a while - but weirder things have happened. Remember that woman who married the Eiffel Tower?!

Joel and Clementine - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2003)

The Strange Relationship: In a fit of post break-up rage, Joel (Jim Carrey) decides to erase chameleon-haired ex-girlfriend Clem (Kate Wislet) from his memories in Michel Gondry's romantic sci-fi thriller headfuck.

Naturally, half way through he realises that he's made a huge mistake, and chases Clem through his own mind in a futile attempt to save her.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? We've all wished we could scratch certain lovers from our history, but actually undergoing voluntary brain damage? Bit far.

We also can't help thinking that these two would be straight back to the brain wipe doctors every time they had a bicker over whose turn it was to take the bins out.

Theodore and Sam - Her (2013)

The Strange Relationship: Lonely writer Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) buys himself an operating system which has been designed to evolve like a human.

After naming her Sam (Scarlett Johansson), he finds himself falling for her and getting more lost in his own world than ever before.

Could It Ever Work In Real-Life? It's bound to happen. We're a society that sleep with our phones more than with our other halves, and if Siri got a sexy vocal makeover à la Scarlett, we'd be seeing a whole lot of computer / human relationships.
