Surf's Up

The penguins are fine, but where did the giraffe come from?

Surf’s Up is solidly average, but not bad for it. You build up experience doing tricks, jumping off and grinding along waves and island rails. There’s no Story mode - you could think of it as Tony Hawk’s Penguin Jam with fewer levels and a less interesting range of moves. All the emphasis is on the racing which, while lacking any depth, is strangely pleasing. You steer with the analog stick and do tricks with the D-pad, following the same formula through every level. Unsurprising but solid.

As for the graphics, we visibly winced when they saw them, muttering “Wave Race, Wave Race” under our breath, yet we liked its soft cartoony quality. It’s fair to say they’re colorful and fun, and the odd moment like speeding through a curling barrel wave is pretty and enjoyable.
