Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10

How did they fit all this on one DVD?

Words: on June 8, 2009

One of the first things you see when you load up Tiger Woods 10 is a presentation explaining what’s new in this year’s game. Because these days it’s so vast that no matter how significant the additions, there’s always a chance you might miss something buried amid the countless options and modes.

You certainly can’t accuse it of lacking value for money, especially the version that comes complete with a MotionPlus dongle. With one of those plugged into the remote, your movements are replicated much more accurately. It also senses any twist in your wrists during a swing, and a little graphic in the corner of the screen shows exactly how the club face is addressing the ball.

Surprisingly, the extra sensitivity doesn’t make the game any more difficult. After slicing a few early attempts, we soon adjusted to it, and the way the character in the game responds instantly to every twitch of the remote makes it all that little bit more believable. The putting system has been upgraded, so it’s based entirely on the power and distance of your stroke. It’s possible to hit the ball quite hard with just a short backswing, and we often overshot the hole. Still, you can always revert to the old system if you don’t get along with it.

Disc golf is another of this year’s new ideas, replacing the ball and hole with a flying disc and a basket on a stick. We had a bit of trouble throwing the disc in a consistent straight line, which is exactly what happens to us in real life. It’s not a mode we’ll be going back to very often, but then it’s just one of many facets to a game that’s so large you could ignore more than half of it and still get months of entertainment out of it.

There’s also the option to hook up to the Forecast Channel so every course will have the correct weather conditions updated live. Staggeringly pointless, yet it’s somehow strangely impressive that somebody would bother to make such a feature.

The Career mode is good. We liked that bit. You get to play minor tournaments to build up some cash and boost your stats, then enter the big-time where the marquee names work the crowd into a fist-pumping frenzy. An added layer of television presentation helps distinguish the major competitions. You can even play tournaments online, although that option wasn’t up and running at the time of review, so all we got was an error message. Anyway, with 27 courses to explore – that’s 486 holes of golf, math fans – we’d want to play a lot longer offline before we’d consider venturing onto the net for a thrashing. Beast of a game, this.

You'll hate
  • MotionPlus doesn't make a huge difference
  • Some weak minigames

You're acting like he gave the game a 5 or 6, but he gave it a 9, which is damn near perfect. I don't think that he's dissing the real-time weather, just stating that it's not really a game-changing addition. Can't comment on the MotionPlus criticism since I haven't tried it yet.

This game is amazing, the reviewer got some things right and some things Very wrong. the Motion Plus makes all the difference and the Weather isn't pointless, it adds to the game... other wise the review was pretty good. I still hate this site for Hating Nintendo. You guys suck!

I have to agree that the MotionPlus makes a significant difference, at least in putting in Precision mode (the one that's most life-like). I ignore the gauge on the screen and just think "how hard would I have to hit a 23 foot putt that goes uphill? (in real life)", and that has me roughly duplicating my average real-life putting skills.

I've been a fan of TW 08 (PC & Wii), skipped 09 and waited for 10. I got it two days ago and have been at it several hours now. If you start in Standard swing mode and go right to the Career part, you're probably gonna get frustrated. They put you on the courses with the big boys, meaning you're playing from the tips (e.g. par 4s at 480+ yds), but you can't hit your driver 230 yards reliably. (At least, I couldn't.) After a few rounds of utter frustration, I backed down to All-Play just to get a little experience under my belt. Won a tournament right away -- All-play is probably 15 strokes per round easier than Standard play.

Now it's time to start working my way thru the tournaments, picking up endorsements for the all-important "bonus" abilities, and building up the My Swing attributes. Once I get Power up to 80% and the rest at 50-60%, I'll probably go back to Standard swing -- it's much more realistic.

From what I've seen so far, this is going to be a great timewaster.

I want this really bad for my Father's Day gift. This looks awesome! I agree that the real-time weather options aren't a negative, but a positive. I like it is real as possible. This is a stellar score it received. Bhup666, have you played it to confirm whether the MotionPlus makes a huge difference or not?

I wouldn't have gone so far as to call the reviewer stupid, but the MotionPlus comment does make me skeptical of this reviewer. The WiiMote alone just isn't precise enough to use as a golf controller on it's own - as TW09 proved. MotionPlus is the ONLY way to play golf on the Wii.

What the heck have you been smoking, man??

How can you say that it is a negative thing that the game has real-time weather option?? It is great to play the courses with different weather conditions.. this is a great attribute!

You really show your stupidity when you say that MotionPlus doesn't make a huge difference.. I mean, how did you even get your job?? You don't seem to know anything about the wii-controls!!

The MotionPlus is a huge step forward in making the controls more accurate.. it is far better than without!!

How is it? Do you have to say three positive and three negative things about a game in order to write a review?? So you just had to say these things because you couldn't find other??

If I were your boss, I would have fired you for doing this bad job!!
