"Trying to shoot allies even when the game doesn't let you" This so many times over. "Not realizing that enemies will respawn infinitely" Yup, I expect to hunker down and kill X enemies before moving on. This messed me up in Black Ops a couple times.

I used to regularly collect but never use powerful weapons such as rocket launchers. In Fallout 3 I wouldn't stray from my Terrible Shotgun, Xuanlong Rifle, Nighthawk, Backwater Rifle combination (replace them with weaker weapons the earlier in the game you are) so never used any of the projectiles, and only ever used normal grenades, never the Nuka variety. Playing Borderlands 2 now, and I'm making an effort to use the correct weapon for the situation so I will at least equip a rocker launcher before heading into a number of Goliaths, but alas, it will be a last resort only after my shotgun, assault rifle and SMG have run out of bullets, or if I'm in need of an urgent Second Wind.

I agree about most on rails sections and forced turret combat sections. I also do hate the lack of progress/evolution in the fps genre although I think Far Cry 3 is hands down the fps of the year.

Pretty much nailed everything with this one. I can't think of anything else this article missed. These things really do define shooters as we know them, for better or for worse. I do admit I quite enjoy turret sequences but ONLY when you are completely invincible, because, y'know, getting shot to kingdom come kind of spoils the moment. And admittedly, I don't know many games that grant you immunity whilst on the turret, despite being able to magic an unlimited number of bullets. I usually still die. A lot. Also the lone wolf one sometimes actually slightly spoils the believability of a game for me. Something like Uncharted especially. If you seriously think about every single occasion where Drake has had a chance to die, then statistically, he should probably be long dead by now. We only reach the end because we get to retry those awful rope swinging bits.

Best FPS games, and both Halo 4, and CoD are on it? Neither is worth the money. Halo: Reach was great. Halo 3, and Halo 4 sucked (though 3 was far worse than 4, even though 4 took out so many features). CoD was never a good franchise, though the story was good in a couple of them.

halo in general is just crap the master chief character sucks and pretty much has the same level of personality as the guy from doom 1 only thing ive liked about each halo is the multiplayer and thats mainly due to having quite a few friends that play them, i only liked reach and odst campaign the rest i thought were dull and felt more like a chore playing through than fun havnt played 4 yet but if its anything like the rest of the main games then it will sick balls

Yeah, the main reason I prefer Halo these days is because you don't die instantly when shot by another player. The skirmishes that come from combat are where I find the most enjoyment. It's something that most FPS games these days barely have.

My problem with this article is that you're speaking about the whole Halo franchise from your experience with one game -- the first two games I played felt incredibly generic and 'safe' in terms of FPS games, and after reading your article it seems that you just like Halo 4 because it 'felt' good rather than citing anything with any real detail. You yourself admit that you had poor experiences with the franchise up until this title. Well-programmed AI and regenerating shields (or health, as the case may be) aren't anything new to FPS games, and if you mean to say that Halo 4 is the apex of such concepts, then I'd have to ask you to explain WHY instead of just stating so... I get that this current batch of Halo games is called the 'redeemer' series, but the idea of absolving the series from all it's sins based on a good experience with ONE of it's games is a bit ridiculous to me. I'm glad you're picking up the older games, because I'd like to see what you think of the series as a whole, rather than stating that Halo is good after playing the most recent entry. So basically what I'm saying is that I am in the same state you were before you played Halo 4, and how I'm hearing this is 'Halo 4 is actually good!' which is the same thing people were telling me when the first game in the series came out; 'Halo is good!' I don't disagree, I'm sure it's a 'good' game, but I don't buy 'good' games. I play games that are innovative and dare to break conventions. It's the same reason I don't consider Bioshock to be especially great in terms of mechanics; the idea of a FPS that utilizes 'powers' is nothing new. It was done in Star Wars: Dark Forces YEARS ago. So does Halo -- as a series -- bring anything new or innovative to it's genre? I'm not asking rhetorically, or trying to upset anyone. It's my actual, genuine question about the series. I tried the first two and felt that they offered nothing new to me, and why I've had my opinion of Halo dangling on the same indifference that you seemed to have had.

No new weapons? The storm rifle is new. And not to mention all of the new promethean weapons. Exactly like human weapons? Not so much. Kinda a difference if you haven't noticed. The only thing I'll agree with is the dubstep, but hey, they're just trying to appeal to more people and advertise their game as fast-paced. Not really a big deal. And besides, I bet the actual game will have barely, if none, dubstep at all.

Remind me which human weapon the Needeler and Plasma Pistols act like? Or the Fuel Rod Cannon? Or the Energy Sword? Last I checked, those don't have UNSC equals. Granted the Plasma Rifle and stuff will act a lot like the UNSC version, but that's sorta to be expected since they've been there since the first game.
