Why PC Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer makes us sad

PC Gamer editor fills us in on the PC version's multiplayer problems

Words: George Walter, GamesRadar UK

You don't have to read far into the comments on our Modern Warfare 2 review to see the level of unbridled anger levelled at Infinity Ward over its handling of the PC version's multiplayer functionality:

From the considered: @Gotxxrock Meh. No server support for PC, no point in buying. What’s the point of a multiplayer game without community involvement?

To the expletiive: @doom3pwns This game is f***in trash... f*** this game, anyone who buys this shit should die

So why are PC gamers so incensed? What is all this talk of dedicated servers and Steam? And why can't PC guys join in the overwhelming sense of excitement surrounding the console versions?

Above: Some angry PC gamers, yesterday

Much of the controversy surrounds the developer's decision to do away with dedicated servers and instead use a matchmaking system similar to that on Xbox Live. Normally PC multiplayer games run on 'dedicated' servers that can be modded and customised to suit the needs of clans who use them. They develop a sense of community as they are used regularly by the same players.

For MW2 Infinity Ward are using 'listen servers' which uses matchmaking to find a bunch of players looking to play a game and then designates the PC with the fastest connection as the host.

"The matchmaking for the PC version is much faster to find a game than on Xbox Live," Tim Edwards, Editor of PC Gamer tells us, "but the quality of the game you get put into is really variable."

This is mainly due to players not being able to control the PC hosting the game, whose owner may be clogging up his connection with simultaneous web usage. The result can be a sub-standard online experience.

"It's not just about no dedicated servers, though," Edwards continues, "The lack of mod tools is massive kick in the face for PC gamers too. A lot of incredible things have come out of the modding communities and work they do on multiplayer games.

"It will undoubtedly have a long term effect on the viability of the multiplayer game. The only advantage you had on PC was the flexibility and control that dedicated servers offered - you might as well just buy the 360 version."

And this isn't just a few moany PC gamers grumbling away on forums or swearing in our comments - a petition to reverse the decision is now at over 200,000 gamers.

"The response to the petition is fairly astounding," Edwards remarks, "We've seen it among our readers too - since it was announced interest in MW2 on PC has gone through the floor. It just doesn't feel like a PC game anymore."

Above: The PC box. Much like the other boxes, except for the free 'hurt' contained inside

To further compound the misery, many hardcore PC owners who abandoned boxed copies of games in favour of using online retailer Steam were hit up with the news that they couldn't get the game they'd paid for until Thursday 12 Nov - two days later than if you bought it in a game shop. That's salt in an already gaping wound.

While Infinity Ward is yet to fully explain its actions, Edwards cites piracy as a possible reason, leading the developer to try and take tighter control over what people are playing.

"It just makes me a bit sad," concludes Edwards, "especially the way it was communicated to gamers so badly."

Infinity Ward has been at pains to play up the level to which the community helped to shape Modern Warfare 2. Unless it reverses its decision on dedicated servers anytime soon, this claim will be falling on dead ears as far as PC gamers are concerned.

PC Gamer will be posting its review of the game at pcgamer.co.uk in the next few days.

Does anyone have a box of tissues?
TURbo  - 9 days 6 hours ago
Well the majority(99.9%) of games I played on COD 4 multiplayer was on dedicated servers that had anywhere from 20 to 40 people, way more than the 18 player limit. Because of that, I am not getting Modern Warfare 2.

I was really excited and read all the previews, but when it said it would cap multiplayer with 18 max, that was it.

@THORSTEINTHESTAFFSTRUCK I offered Tim a hug and a tissue while we were chatting but he turned it down.

Why can't they just do what Left 4 Dead does, have the matchmaking option but have support for dedicated servers as well.

@gameguy151

2 words Fuck you
infinity ward is giving us pc gamers a huge middle finger with this by changing the price to match the xbox and changing the system its taking away what was unique and fun about being a pc gamer so just shut up if your not a pc gamer and having this happen to you.

Gameguy-Do you LIKE the fact that we get shafted by most devs into crappy P2P on consoles? Haben't you noticed how much better games run online with them when we et them-which is quite often on PSN while less so on Live?

Don't you imagine that had we gamers, like a REAL community, stood up together with our PC gaming bros and demanded not only dedicareds for them buy also for PS360 that we might have got them? The game wouldn't have gone anywhere and a real cross format stance of "no buy til you sort out the MP servers-and the sly price hikes and the homophobic videos and..." would have scared them if many of us joined in but no you'd rather laugh at PC gamers being shafted like we console gamers ALWAYS are because we can't stick together.

Honestly, like you the gamiong community need to grow up or we'll be paying more and more for less and less. Fewer features and lesser amounts of R&D as we gamers get squeezed even though WE support the whole damn thing! When will we stop being a console gamer and a PC gamer before we're just gamers. til we do we're easy meat to IW and Co who'll take every penny while doing less and less work in future.

Seriously, do you LIKE paying more and getting fewer features and worse online performance? Thats' what they're offering and you endure with that attitude. Chrisy on a bike sopme people can't see the wood for the trees. You seriously think anyone's better off with P2P? Console gamers should want them AS WELL as PC gamers and allow us to ship in some mods too like we can for UT3 on PS3. I LIKE free content, again I suppose you don't, is that it?

Am I the only PC gamer that didn't like this game before that was announced? I had a comment removed on this very site for my stating some facts, and that I was not excited for it. It costs more, brings nothing new to the table, has the ridiculously stupid Killstreak system, gives better weapons to people that play for longer, has, is similar to CoD4MW1, mostly spray 'n pray weapons and a short campaign with infinitely respawning enemies and terrible AI. The giant middle finger to PC gamers make me dislike it more, but I already knew the game was going to be terrible. Now all the rave reviews are coming in with their perfect scores, praising things like random grenades making things more "intense" (GameTrailers), or even criticizing the game in the review, but still giving it a perfect score. Unfortunately for the gaming industry, this game will sell incredibly well and be called GOTY by every major gaming site.

Obviously in my first paragraph i mean "when we get dedicateds". Sorry, but at the time I was incredulous.

Sorry for typos-sticky keyboard(let your imagination run wild as to why)

Dude, what's with the article titled "Why...makes us sad" and it not be a list? WTF?!?

First of all, I am not a PC gamer, so understand that I don't understand much about "dedicated servers", yet I am not a "console fanboy", so I will NOT be recommending that all the PC gamers go and buy a 360 or PS3. However, I do know that IW's FIRST game was (correct me if I am wrong, but I am sure that this is not the case) the PC version of the first Call of Duty game, so if they are doing something that is completely hated by most of the PC community, then they are a company that has forgotten their roots, so in that case, I will accept people denouncing IW and Modern Warfare 2 for the decision, I just want to make sure that all the "console fanboys" don't try to tear apart the PC gamers just because they think that the "deciated servers" are all just a cover for hackers and modders to easily get to lvl 10 prestige in just a few matches, and no one uses a lot of curse words in their defense for their opinions. So, let's not have a repeat of Gameguy 151's or doom3pwns's comments, and I am sure that both sides will get more people to listen to them.

oh well. im probablly gettin it for pc anyway since i dont pay microsoft to play online when i can play online for free on pc. but I think infinity ward just ruined arguablly the best pc shooter in history. i think theyll make a patch for this issue due to everyone's response, but the excuses they make. "this is partly due to piracy" made me wanna punch pirate bay in the face. well, back to COD4 online. sigh.

To be honest I coulden't care less about the dedicated servers, except for the lack of mods it creates, but theres loads of other games to mod so fk that 2. I'm a bit bummed out about the player cap, but even there, doesn't bother me. I don't get all this "might as well buy it on the 360 then", thats bs, with the pc version you get the same game with better graphics and better control, so from where I'm standing that still meens better. If no1 buys it on the pc infinity ward will just be added to the list of devs who used to make pc games, and that'd be a massive shame. Unless theres a another twist in the tail I'll still be buying it for my pc.
grappler51  - 9 days 36 minutes ago
I'm dissapointed most about the lack of mod support, but this game will still be best on PC. I'm not going to not buy it just because of this, I think it will still be a good game.
