First-time writer/ director Altané Kavaïté’s low-budget, high-concept drama centres on Charlotte (Émilie Dequenne), a documentary sound engineer who visits the village where her clairvoyant mother (Ludmila Mikaël) was recently murdered. As rumour-mongering locals close ranks, she discovers her recording equipment can pick up sounds from the past. An ominous mood dominates, with Kavaïté making effective use of webs, cracks and holes to illustrate Charlotte’s fraught pursuit of the truth. The narrative threads are tied a little too neatly, but it’s a promising debut.
