INTERVIEW: Join us as we investigate the mysterious art of crocheting game characters

GR: What about anime? What was the first series you really got into? Do you prefer subtitles or dubs?

Nikki: I believe it was about three or four years ago when I first watched Fullmetal Alchemist on Adult Swim. It was weird at first but then I got hooked onto the show and before I knew it, I was glued onto the television screen. I really loved the character development and you start to get immersed in the world created by Hiromu Arakawa.

At first I actually preferred dubs, but then I’ve heard that subtitles are much better. Personally I like dubs better because it allows me to pay more attention to what’s going on in the anime.

GR: What are you watching right now? Any recommendations?

Nikki: I’m currently watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. At first I was hesitant in watching it because I’ve seen the first one already, but this show is meant to tell the story in a different way. I thought that I would give it a chance.

I also watched FLCL, Ergo Proxy and Death Note recently. I would really recommend FMA and Death Note. Both of those are remarkably well done.

GR: So you’re a Full Metal Alchemist fan! What do you think about the second anime adaptation that’s currently airing?

Nikki: I like how some scenes show what was only explained in the first FMA series. However, there are still parts of the first one that I like better. One example was the episode where Ed becomes a State Alchemist. FMA Brotherhood rushed a little bit on that story. The first FMA had more feeling to it in that episode. There a lot of things that are similar as well.



GR: Why Sackboy? What made you want to start crotcheting game/anime-themed Sackboys?

Nikki: I first heard about Little Big Planet from commercials about it on television. I had made a totoro before that and I wanted to see if I could make a Sackboy. He was just such a cute character so I decided to crochet one. The first one I made had a smile on his face and the second one I attempted had an “open-mouth†smile on him. People on YouTube had asked me to do a tutorial on a doll so I did it on the Sackboy. Then a friend of mine suggested that I make an Ico Sackboy doll. After that people have requested that I do several different Sackboys.

GR: Do you have a favorite creation?
Nikki: I really love the Ico Sackboy doll I made. He’s adorable.

GR: Do you have any plans on selling your creations?
I have had a lot of people asking me if I would sell them but I’m sad to say that I don’t. It just takes a lot of time to make and I’m pretty busy with school and family already. Also, I don’t think that I will be able to keep with the demand if there ever was one.
