There are plenty of so-called “gaming phones” out there, but many of them are basically just normal phones with gamer-friendly branding and perhaps a few RGB lights in there. So what do real gamers do if they actually want a device with smoother performance? That’s where the Nubia RedMagic 5G comes in.

The RedMagic 5G goes beyond simple branding tricks, and actually offers a faster, smoother performance. How? Well for starters, the display refresh rate on the device is an absolutely huge 144Hz, and it’s the first mass-produced smartphone in the world with that high of a refresh rate, meaning that you’ll get an ultra-smooth feel on the huge 6.65-inch screen. That, combined with the fact that it’s an AMOLED display, makes for a fast, smooth, and immersive experience. And, that AMOLED offers custom calibration for esports, ensuring that you’ll get an awesome gaming experience. It even has a 240Hz touch sampling rate, so it’ll be ultra responsive.

The phone goes beyond a high refresh rate. It also offers the latest and greatest Qualcomm flagship processor, the Snapdragon 865, coupled with speedy LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage. Unlike other Snapdragon 865-enabled devices, however, this phone keeps the chip running as fast as possible thanks to its liquid-cooling tech and Turbo Fan 3.0. Coupled with the fact that the device offers up to an impressive 12GB of RAM, you should get ultimate gaming performance in a phone.

The RedMagic 5G even has built-in customizable triggers for gaming, so you won’t necessarily have to use exclusively on-screen controls or pair a third-party controller. Those triggers mean you can simply pull your phone out of your pocket on the go, and start gaming with a nice, tactile feel. Then there’s the fact that the phone has calibrated “4D” haptic feedback to make games even more immersive, and it has Game Space 2.1, where you can tweak settings, monitor your phone’s performance, and more.

Powering everything is a 4,500mAh battery, which is pretty huge, and should ensure that the phone easily lasts through a day of use. And, if you need to top up at any point, the phone has up to 55W Quick Charging tech built right into it which can be purchased separately from the RedMagic website. And, it supports 5G connectivity, though even when you’re not on 5G it should get a fast LTE connection.

Of course, the RedMagic 5G works great as a normal phone too. It has a 64-megapixel triple-lens camera on it, with one 64-megapixel Sony IMX686 main sensor, one 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and one 2-megapixel macro sensor. Safe to say, you should get great photos in any situation, especially considering the fact that the phone has a pro camera mode built into it. That lets you really dig into the settings, if you want to.

If you had to guess, how much would you assume this phone costs? In a world of $1,000 flagships, a sky-high price tag wouldn’t be out of the ordinary. This phone, however, steers clear of that trend. You can get the 8GB RAM, 128GB storage “Eclipse Black” model or the recently released Hot Rod Red model for a super affordable $579 -- or get the more powerful 12GB RAM, 256GB storage “Pulse” model for a still very affordable $649. The device is available right now too, so you won’t have to wait to get your hands on it.
