SF fame: An Oscar was never likely, but Turner’s bombastic stage persona was perfect for playing the matriarch of Barter Town – a kind of Margaret Thatcher in war paint and chain mail (which may very well have been one of Thatcher’s fantasy’s… or at the very least Norman Tebbit’s). She had great hair too and provided a cracking theme song.
