New title and release date for Planet Of The Apes sequel

Fox have made some big announcements regarding the sequel to last year’s runaway success, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes , including a new title and an official release date.

The follow-up to the apes’ origin story will be called Dawn Of The Planet Of The Ape s, and will be released in the US on Memorial Day, 23 May 2014. Rupert Wyatt will return to the director’s chair as Caesar continues to take strides towards his species’ ascension to power.

“You could start this story again eight years from where we left off,” said Wyatt when asked about potential ideas for the sequel. “The next generation of apes, those that have come from our protagonists, perhaps going in to a conflict with humans and showing real fear, in the same way as going into war for young soldiers in this day and age, telling their story.”

“Or how apes are taking over cities," he continues, "and being moved into human environments and having to interact with them and deal with things that are part of our culture and understand and evolve through them.”

Intriguing stuff. Additionally, Fox have also revealed an official release date for another big sequel in 2014, with the follow-up to X-Men: First Class set to open on 18 July. As with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes , the original director is set to return, with Matthew Vaughn bringing all his original cast with him. It promises to be a very exciting year...
