The 50 Challenges

As cool as battling Shadow Links is, online play needs an end goal. Fear not, as A Link Between Worlds also sports 50 challenges for Shadow Link battles. Complete each of these during your battles to earn 50 medals, and you'll unlock something special.

Here are the 50 challenges in plain English:

  1. Win your first battle.
  2. Win 5 battles.
  3. Win 10 battles.
  4. Win 20 battles.
  5. Use the Lamp for your final attack.
  6. Use the Super Lamp for your final attack.
  7. Use the Bow for your final attack.
  8. Use the Nice Bow for your final attack.
  9. Stun your enemy with the Boomerang at some point during the battle, and win.
  10. Stun your enemy with the Nice Boomerang at some point during the battle, and win.
  11. Stun your enemy with the Hookshot at some point during the battle, and win.
  12. Use the Nice Hookshot for your final attack.
  13. Use the Hammer for your final attack.
  14. Use the Nice Hammer for your final attack.
  15. Use a Bomb for your final attack.
  16. Use the Nice Bomb for your final attack.
  17. Use the Fire Rod for your final attack.
  18. Use the Nice Fire Rod for your final attack.
  19. Use the Ice Rod for your final attack.
  20. Use the Nice Ice Rod (the N'Ice Rod, as the cool kids call it) for your final attack.
  21. Use the Tornado Rod for your final attack.
  22. Use the Nice Tornado Rod for your final attack.
  23. Use the Sand Rod for your final attack.
  24. Use the Nice Sand Rod for your final attack.
  25. Use the Net for your final attack.
  26. Use the Super Net for your final attack.
  27. Win a battle while wearing the Hint Glasses.
  28. Drink a Red Potion at some point during the battle, and win.
  29. Drink a Blue Potion at some point during the battle, and win.
  30. Win a battle with a Yellow Potion in effect.
  31. Win a battle with a Purple Potion in effect.
  32. Drink Milk at some point during the battle, and win.
  33. Use a Fairy at some point during the battle, and win.
  34. Use a Bee for your final attack.
  35. Use a Golden Bee for your final attack.
  36. Eat an Apple at some point during the battle, and win.
  37. Eat a Green Apple at some point during the battle, and win.
  38. Use a Foul Fruit at some point during the battle, and win.
  39. Block an attack with the Shield at some point during the battle, and win.
  40. Block an attack with the Hylian Shield at some point during the battle, and win.
  41. Use the Pegasus Boots dash for your final attack.
  42. Use a Spin Attack for your final attack.
  43. Use a Sword Beam for your final attack.
  44. Use the Lv. 3 Master Sword for your final attack.
  45. Merge with a wall at some point during the battle, and win.
  46. Win a battle without taking damage.
  47. Win a battle without moving.
  48. Win a battle within 10 seconds.
  49. Win a battle without using any items - sword and shield only.
  50. Win a battle without using any items or your sword - shield and Pegasus Boots dash only.


So there are the 50 challenges. The last few can be quite tricky to complete, so expect to battle quite a few Shadow Links before locking these down. Otherwise, the best advice we can give is to collect and upgrade the best equipment, all of which is explained in our complete walkthrough.

The Reward

With all 50 challenges completed and medals earned, return to Gramps in Kakariko Village. You'll now be able to battle him any time you want, but beware: he uses the best equipment and two random, upgraded items. It'll be the toughest battle you encounter, and sadly, it's only worth five Rupees each time (there's a reason for that, as Gramps will explain). But hey, it's nice to battle offline too. Plus, we'll have lots of "Gramps is actually Link!" theories floating around now.
