Zack Snyder has addressed whether the Snyderverse could continue in another form, and it sounds like it's possible.

The Snyderverse officially came to an end with the long-awaited release of Zack Snyder's Justice League, AKA the Snyder Cut, which was finally released after a lengthy fan campaign. But, Snyder originally had plans for further movies, which gave rise to the Restore the Snyderverse movement.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder was asked if he'd thought about turning his plans for Justice League 2 and 3 into an animated movie or comic.

"We've absolutely talked about it quite a bit, and sure," Snyder said. "Yeah, I mean, we live in a world where all that's possible. Whatever form it would take, Broadway musical – that would be amazing."

The DCEU is well and truly done now, however, with James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU taking its place. That universe kicked off with Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker season 2, and it continues this year with Supergirl and Lanterns.

In the same interview, Snyder also shared he still wants to make a Dark Knight Returns movie. "I'll be 100% honest – I would still make The Dark Knight Returns as a film if that opportunity arose," he shared.

"Yes, did I steal or borrow or homage as much as I could within the context of the mythology that I was creating? Yes. But the thing about The Dark Knight Returns is that it is a closed loop of awesomeness that owes nothing to anything, except for a masterful deconstruction of gods that we all grew up with," he added.

Zack Snyder has not fully wrapped his DC era just yet, as the filmmaker recently said he would still be interested in adapting The Dark Knight Returns "if that opportunity arose" in the future.

Snyder is a huge fan of Frank Miller's 1986 comic series, which heavily inspired his movies in the now defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

"I'll be 100% honest – I would still make The Dark Knight Returns as a film if that opportunity arose," Snyder said during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

"Yes, did I steal or borrow or homage as much as I could within the context of the mythology that I was creating? Yes. But the thing about The Dark Knight Returns is that it is a closed loop of awesomeness that owes nothing to anything, except for a masterful deconstruction of gods that we all grew up with," he added.

The filmmaker argued that the spirit of Miller's comic was in Batman v Superman, saying: "BVS is for me, you know, damn, damn what the world would think. I was bound and determined to challenge my gods and find out if they could handle it."

When Horowitz asked him about his earliest memories of reading The Dark Night Returns, Snyder recalled being on a "quest to find the thing that would spark my imagination," and how the DC stories inspired him. "We were pretty much in the Dark Knight, Watchmen era [which] had really struck pop culture and I guess the comic book community more specifically of course," he explained, saying that Dark Knight Returns felt like "it was written specifically for me."

"I feel like The Dark Knight Returns is like someone wrote your myth, and that was amazing. You have this seminal comic book that really profoundly affects you, but with no way of expressing it. At that point of my life, there was no Batman fighting Superman movie that you could possibly, in my wildest dreams, could be a reality."

A few decades later, the wild dreams came true, as Snyder helped shape the DCEU with Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder's Justice League before the superhero franchise went through a total makeover under James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Zack Snyder has shared another photo of Henry Cavill on social media, as well as his hopes for "many more stories together."

"Today marks a little milestone on this wild Instagram journey – 500k followers in just over two months!" Snyder wrote alongside the photo of Cavill. "I just want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who’s joined along the way. For me, these characters are a kind of modern mythology, and I put a ton of reverence and respect into bringing them to life. Seeing that resonate with so many of you means the world. Here’s to many more stories together!"

Cavill played Superman in three of Snyder's movies: 2013's Man of Steel, 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and 2021's Zack Snyder's Justice League. After a cameo in the Black Adam post-credits scene in 2022, it looked like he might be back as Clark Kent, but plans changed after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios later that year and David Corenswet was eventually cast in the role instead.

Next up for Snyder is The Last Photograph, which will see him re-team with Rebel Moon stars Stuart Martin and Fra Fee and 300 screenwriter Kurt Johnstad. The thriller will follow an ex-DEA operative as he searches for his missing, recently orphaned niece and nephew with the help of a war photographer.

A new report suggests that Netflix's own Snyderverse might be coming to an end.

According to Forbes, it all began when Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead sequel and an animated spin-off were quietly cancelled in August 2024. Now, two more projects have reportedly hit the chopping block: a second season of Snyder's Norse mythology adult animated series Twilight of the Gods, and the untitled LAPD SWAT movie that the filmmaker had also announced last year.

Snyder's sci-fi adventure Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire was released in December 2023, and was immediately followed by a sequel, The Scargiver, in April 2024. Despite negative to mixed reviews, both films topped the streaming charts, Netflix also released director's cuts for both films. Twilight of the Gods hit the streamer in September 2024, and followed a half-human, half-Jötunn warrior named Sigrid who vows revenge on Thor after he pulls a Red Wedding and slaughters her clan mid-ceremony. The animated series currently sits at a 76% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Beyond Netflix, however, Snyder's "passion project" film The Last Photograph is currently in production – and stars Rebel Moon actors Suart Martin and Fra Free. The story, written by Kurt Johnstad, follows an ex-DEA operative who must return to the mountains of South America in an effort to find his missing niece and nephew after their diplomat parents are killed. A TV series based on 300, Snyder's 2006 epic historical action movie, is also still in the works... and probably won't premiere on Netflix.

Somehow, the Snyder Cut returned – Star Wars fans are so keen to get the Ben Solo movie back into development that an actual banner campaigning for its release made it into the sky above Disney Studios in California.

The banner reads #SaveTheHuntForBenSolo and was spotted in the sky yesterday, October 23.

Collider reported live from the scene and spoke to the fan who organized the stunt, Lianna Al Allaf. "I really hope this banner shows the decision makers at Disney that the fans really do want this," Al Allaf shared. "I hope this banner shows just how much the character of Ben Solo means to so many of us, and that the fans really do want this movie."

Recently, Adam Driver himself revealed that he'd been developing a Ben Solo movie with Steven Soderbergh, and, while Lucasfilm was onboard, Disney bosses Bob Iger and Alan Bergman killed it.

“We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that," Driver said.

The fan reaction to the news has been huge, with many pointing out that multiple Star Wars characters have died and returned – and a cryptic post from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, director of the upcoming Rey movie, also has fans speculating.

Next up for Star Wars is Visions Volume 3, which arrives this October 29. Next year, the franchise returns to the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Zack Snyder says there are "tons of stories" he could tell in his Rebel Moon universe, but is currently on a "bit of a break" from his sci-fi Netflix property.

"I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie [for Netflix],” Snyder told Variety of his current plans. "So I was like, OK, well, I’m gonna just sort of let that Rebel Moon world boil for a minute, and I’m gonna go do this."

With how quickly Snyder pumped out two full-fat Rebel Moon movies, it should come as a little surprise that the director is keen to take a brief step back from the universe, which saw a band of rebels from across the galaxy fighting back against the Imperium.

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire was released in December 2023 with a sequel, The Scargiver, following soon after in April 2024. Two sets of director's cuts – as has become Snyder's trademark – also made their way onto Netflix.

"It was a very exhausting, long process doing the two movies together," Snyder admitted. "So it was nice to have a bit of a break from it. I love it like crazy, but it’s nice to have a bit of a break. So yeah, we’ll see after I finish this, when I come back, where we are with everything."

Alongside his LAPD project, Snyder is helping to bring a 300 TV series to life. The director also recently made a cameo in Rick and Morty season 8 alongside DC Studios boss James Gunn.

Everyone is waiting to see what Man of Steel director Zack Snyder thinks of James Gunn’s new movie, Superman, and although we are yet to hear from him, the Justice League helmer says he will try to see it as soon as possible.

"This weekend I don’t think I’m seeing it because I have a horse show — my kids ride horses — but I’m going to try to see it right after that," said Snyder in an interview with Variety. It sounds as though the director couldn't make it to opening weekend.

However, it is important to note that Variety’s interview took place on July 8, and Superman hit screens on July 11. So, Snyder could have well seen it by now, but is maybe keeping his verdict to himself. We’re keeping an eye on Snyder’s Twitter to see if the filmmaker shares his view soon. But we won’t hold our breath, as Snyder is not as chronically online as top Tweeter Gunn.

The reason why everyone is so keen to hear Snyder’s thoughts on the Superman reboot is that fans have been quick to pit the directors against each other. This is ever since Gunn’s DCU: Chapter One was announced, discontinuing the DCEU. Opposing fans have gone as far as to argue online over which movie is better, Man of Steel or Superman, and even debate who would win in a fight, Henry Cavill’s or David Corenswet’s Superman.

But it's all love between the directors themselves as the pair recently appeared on an episode of Rick and Morty together, playing parodied versions of themselves. The episode showed an animated Gunn and Snyder arguing over who created the best Superman. Gunn even shared a selfie of them both after recording for the show.

The funny part of that in Rick and Morty, Snyder has actually seen Gunn’s Superman, "Just saw your new cut of Superman. Word of advice, he’s the Man of Steel, not the Man of Conversation," said animated Snyder, adding, "do more shots of him punching!"

DC fans have taken the long-running James Gunn’s DCU vs. Zack Snyder’s DCEU debate to another level, as they argue over who would win in a fight, new Superman David Corenswet or Henry Cavill's Man of Steel.

Warning, this article contains spoilers for Gunn’s Superman, so make sure you have seen it before reading on. But first, read our Superman review.

Zack Snyder and James Gunn fans have been head-to-head since the new Superman movie was still announced, with Cavill fans angry that the Man of Steel star wasn't recast as the hero, whilst Corenswet supporters were glad to see a new actor take on the role. Now that Superman has hit screens, both sides of the argument have entered into some rather petty clashes, including this one.

The whole playground-esque squabble started when Twitter user FromSelinaKyle posted, "Cavill’s Superman would wipe the floor with Corenswet’s Superman," and the replies started rolling in.

However, in the Gunn corner, a lot of fans came to Corenswet’s defence, with one pointing out, "He escaped a black hole while half health and holding 3 individuals with his super breath, this feat alone solos Cavill's Superman." However, a Snyder fan clapped back, "Cavill's Superman literally did that. He escaped the Phantom Zone, which is stated to be a Black hole that pulls things into a completely different plane of existence."

Round 2 saw fans debate whether Corenswet’s Supes would have bested Ben Affleck’s Batman, who notably beat Cavill’s hero. "If Batman almost took out Cavill, David and Mr Terrific will mop the floor with him," said one Corenswet-backer, but a Snyder-head replied, "Affleck Batman can beat David Superman in hand-to-hand combat."

However, many Cavill fans have highlighted how the new Superman movie starts with his defeat, putting him in a weaker light straight away. One fan said, "This Superman is pretty weak in comparison." But it is important to note that this was Supes' first loss in his first three years of being Superman, and he was facing a highly intelligent villain in Lex Luthor and his team.

But at the end of the day, there was one voice in this argument who saw the light and said, "Sure, he could beat him in a fight, but he wouldn’t do that. They’re both the good guys. They’d respect each other like you guys should for them both… Cavill’s Supes is still the good guy and would have 0 reason to fight HIMSELF."

Meanwhile, both Gunn and Snyder are seeing the lighter side in fans pitting them against one another. In fact, the two directors even appeared in a recent episode of Rick and Morty playing parodied versions of themselves fighting over who created the best Superman.

The run-up to Superman just keeps getting better as director and DC boss James Gunn has appeared in the most recent episode of Rick and Morty alongside Man of Steel helmer Zack Snyder.

The duo appeared in Rick and Morty season 8, episode 7, which aired Sunday, July 6, where they played versions of themselves. The episode, titled 'Ricker Than Fiction,' showed the two getting lunch at the Warner Bros lot cafeteria, where Snyder makes a sly comment about Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie. The clip has since made its way online, posted on Twitter. Watch it below.

Despite the episode making fun of both of the directors, Rick and Morty executive producer Scott Marder told Variety that the two "were good sports." It seems that they were more than happy to play over-the-top versions of themselves.

"Both of those guys sort of implied that this is the show they watch when they have downtime. So they were thrilled to get to be a part of the world, and there was no pushback or bristling," said Marder. "If anything, they laughed at anything we threw at them. There were probably, frankly, even more digs and more silly things we could have used. All they did was laugh it off."

The best part of the cameo is watching the two bicker about their very different takes on Superman. In one moment, Man of Steel director Snyder says to Gunn, "Just saw your new cut of Superman. Word of advice, he’s the Man of Steel, not the Man of Conversation," adding, “do more shots of him punching!” To which Gunn retaliates, but later apologizes, saying, "I shouldn't be lashing out at you, your biceps are the size of my head."

Aside from the Snyder cameo, Gunn actually plays a central role in the episode, which follows Rick and his grandson Morty as they head to Warner Bros studio to complain about Gunn ruining their favorite movie franchise, Maximum Velocitree. However, the two later take matters into their own hands and use Rick’s ‘Movie-lizer’ to rewrite the franchise themselves.

Let’s just hope Rick doesn't have to use his 'Movie-lizer' when Gunn’s Superman flies into theatres on July 11.

Zack Snyder has celebrated the four year anniversary of the Snyder Cut, AKA Zack Snyder's Justice League.

The four-hour director's cut debuted on HBO Max on March 18, 2021, four years after the original theatrical version debuted.

"It's been 4 years. Still humbled by the fact that this exists at all. Big thanks to all of you that made it happen. If you have a spare 4 hours, go give it a watch on @StreamOnMax," Snyder wrote on Twitter.

Snyder stepped away from the original Justice League following a family tragedy, and the film was completed by Joss Whedon. The Snyder Cut was ultimately released following a passionate fan campaign, and, along with the supersized runtime, its changes include a totally different tone and a new post-credits scene.

Despite another fan campaign to "Restore the SnyderVerse," AKA make sequels to the Snyder Cut and other scrapped projects, like the Ben Affleck Batman movie (which eventually became Matt Reeves's The Batman), the movie marks the end of the road for Snyder's DC movies. Instead, Snyder's latest releases can be found on Netflix – Rebel Moon Parts 1 and 2 (and their director's cuts), as well as animated series Twilight of the Gods.

As for DC, the next movie to release is James Gunn's Superman, which releases this July 11 as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

Zack Snyder's latest Netflix project, Twilight of the Gods, is a bloody revenge tale rooted in Norse mythology. As such, that means mythological figures are major players in the show. 

Of course, gods like Thor, Loki, and Odin aren't obscure characters from the margins of mythology, but hugely famous gods with a heavy presence in pop culture. How, then, did Snyder go about reinterpreting them for his own tale?

"Our take on those Norse gods is a little closer to the way they're represented in mythology," he tells us. "I know that they exist now in pop culture in a really cool way, but I don't know that it's 100% consistent with how they were actually represented in the Norse legend. So, I feel like what we've done with them is put them back to a more, I guess I would say, just a more mythological representation." 

Naturally, creating a series about Norse mythology requires plenty of research. "It's a vast and incredible landscape of mythological source material that we're excited to have as this incredible canvas to work with," says Snyder. "We read tons of books, we talked a lot. One of our writers has also written a book on Norse mythology. A lot of dorks like myself have a working knowledge of Norse mythology. And then when you actually dig into it, you realize how little you actually know, because it's so rich. 

"And then a lot of it was also talking about what our story wanted to be, and that we wanted to approach Ragnarok, but not get to Ragnarok," he continues. "And so, what could we do to kind of start to plant the seeds of Ragnarok within the context of our story, and how the gods would play, and their personalities? So, yeah, it was really just the process of evolution."

Adds executive producer Wesley Coller: "As a producer, it's important to know what you know, but it's more important to know what you don't know. Norse mythology is not something I was super versed in coming out of the gates. And so that's where we start to lean into Eric [Carrasco] and Caitlin [Parrish] and Peter [Aperlo], our writers, along with Zack's knowledge. And like Zack said, Peter wrote a book on Norse mythology. So, to have these amazing people who are so versed in it, and know those stories and can unpack that, it's just a great opportunity to hear people who are experts, and lean into their knowledge as we shape the show."

And while we won't spoil anything here, it's safe to say that Twilight of the Gods ends in a way that leaves it wide open for a continuation. "We had a longer story, and we kind of stopped it there, so we know what we want everyone to do," Snyder explains. "But it felt like a great place to stop, because it's a great ending."

"From the start, when they asked me whether I'd be interested in doing an animated series, I was like, 'Well, I'll do it if it's adult animation,'" Zack Snyder tells us of his new Netflix Norse mythology adaptation, Twilight of the Gods. "Because, for me, that's a new frontier, especially in America, this idea of animation that's not for kids, an adult animated series. And so I thought, in that way, if we could do that, that would be something I haven't seen a lot of."

The eight episode series follows a woman named Sigrid, who, after her family is brutally slain by Thor on her wedding day, embarks on a bloody, grisly mission of revenge. Along the way, there's plenty of gut-spilling action, explicit sex scenes, and brutal battles. Game of Thrones, eat your heart out…

"It's funny, because, also we've just had Blue Eye Samurai, which is also a sort of insane tone, but really fun," Snyder continues. "[It was] super fun to make, and the artists are all dying to do adult, something adult, so it was fun. Really, for me, it's just kind of my natural aesthetic, and it's just easier."

Executive producer Wesley Coller adds that the very nature of the story they were telling lent itself to securing that show's TV-MA rating, the equivalent of a movie's R-rating, too. "With the scale of the mythology and the themes and the story that [Snyder] wanted to tell, it leaned into that naturally, again, with [his] aesthetic. And so I think to have the opportunity to explore this story in this world, in a mature space, was just a no brainer." 

"And frankly, Norse mythology is kind of an R-rated deal anyway, to be 100% honest. It's pretty intense," points out Snyder. 

Of course, this isn't Snyder's first Netflix collaboration – he also has the Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead universes set at the streamer. Did Netflix have any guidelines for Twilight of the Gods, then? 

"No, not really," Snyder says. "I was waiting for them to tell me to stop, but they never did. So, it's great. It's the kind of thing that's good for everybody. I'm trying to think, was there anything they said was too much? I don't think so. I really don't think so. I can't think of anything off the top of my head. I was trying for them to tell me it was too much. I was looking for someone to say, 'Stop, that's enough!' But no one did. So I was like, 'Okay, I guess this is cool.'"

The first full-length trailer for Zack Snyder's new Netflix project, Twilight of the Gods, has been unveiled – and it teases a brutal, bloody revenge mission.

In the clip, which you can watch above, we see main character Sigrid have her wedding violently crashed by Thor. In the aftermath, she swears revenge against the God of Thunder and sets out to kill him. She won't be alone on her quest, though, as, along with her husband-to-be and a group of warriors, the trickster god Loki is also seemingly on her side. 

"Gods killing gods would go unnoticed," Loki remarks in the footage. "But a mortal? That would remake the world."

"It's a mission, it's a revenge story," Snyder has previously said of the show. "Sigrid is this beautiful, very Scandinavian kind of cold but passionate character that I've really enjoyed working through and with because she's just so cool. Sylvia Hoeks voices her."

The rest of the cast includes Stuart Martin (Army of Thieves), Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Rahul Kohli (The Haunting of Bly Manor), Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead), and Corey Stoll (Ant-Man). 

Along with Snyder, Jay Oliva, Eric Carrasco, Andrew Tamandl, Tim Divar, and David Hartman direct the eight episode series. 

The show follows Snyder's other Netflix projects: Army of the Dead, Rebel Moon: Part One, and Rebel Moon: Part Two (as well as the two director's cuts). As for Snyder's next movie, though, he's indicated he wants to do something on a smaller scale. 

"I really wanted to do something that's not a visual effects extravaganza, just because I'd like to just do something a little grounded," the director told us earlier in the year.

Zack Snyder has revealed the first look at his next Netflix project – and it's his animated TV show about Norse mythology. 

Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver was only just released on the streamer, and it's currently Netflix's number one movie worldwide. 

"We fear no Gods! Coming to Netflix this fall, my new animated series TWILIGHT OF THE GODS," Snyder wrote on Twitter, accompanying a picture from the animated show. See it below. 

"It's basically this: there's a king and his queen in a small Viking village, and they want to get married," Snyder told Collider of the show last year. "An event happens to them at their wedding that causes Sigrid, who is the bride to be, who is the child of giants, to go on a crazy mission of revenge. She enlists a cast of characters – a seer, a dwarf – and they come together to form a band that has this one mission to find a god and fight him. It’s a mission, it's a revenge story. Sigrid is this beautiful, very Scandinavian kind of cold but passionate character that I’ve really enjoyed working through and with because she’s just so cool. Sylvia Hoeks voices her."

The cast for the show was announced way back in 2021, and it includes Stuart Martin (Army of Thieves), Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Rahul Kohli (The Haunting of Bly Manor), Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead), and Corey Stoll (Ant-Man). 

As for Snyder's next movie, that's currently a mystery. "I really wanted to do something that's not a visual effects extravaganza, just because I'd like to just do something a little grounded," the director told us. "Horse Latitudes is a perfect example of that, it's much more just like a movie we can go film. I know that sounds, like, 'Isn't that every movie?' But a movie like this [Rebel Moon], there's nothing for free. There's nothing to film unless you build it. So, it'd be nice to not have to do that."

Zack Snyder's latest movie, Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver, is proving incredibly popular on Netflix. 

The film has a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of just 15%, but that doesn't seem to be stopping viewers from checking it out. At the moment, the movie is Netflix's number one movie worldwide. Plus, Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire has also made its way back into the top 10, currently sitting at the third most popular movie on the streamer. 

The Scargiver picks up in the aftermath of A Child of Fire, with Sofia Boutella's Kora and her allies helping to train the peaceful farmers of Veldt for a showdown with the brutal Imperium. 

There are also two longer director's cuts on the way, too, which will be rated R – and, though nothing is confirmed just yet, The Scargiver leaves the door open for future movies in the series. 

"We definitely have a story in mind, if we were to go forward," Snyder told us recently. "We're waiting to have the totality of these movies come out, including the director's cut. I'm probably going to make this other little small movie in the meantime, and before we decide what to do with more Rebel Moon movies. But yeah, excited to make more Rebel Moon movies, if that was in the offing."

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire ended with a major tease of a looming battle – and its sequel, titled The Scargiver, more than delivers on that promise. 

After Ed Skrein's fearsome Admiral Noble was resurrected at the end of Part One, he was set on a collision course with Sofia Boutella's Kora – AKA the Scargiver herself. Part Two sees them go head to head in a dramatic duel on a crashing spaceship, which Skrein, who played the villain Ajax in Deadpool, says was similar in scale to the Marvel movie. 

"I've done a lot of stunt work periodically over the years, and this was huge," says Skrein of his showdown with Boutella. "The final fight we did in Deadpool was probably comparable just as a single set piece, just in terms of the amount of days that it ended up being covering it. It was crazy. We had a gimbal that we were sliding down and then running back up again and sliding down."

"This is the Titanic moment of Rebel Moon," adds Fra Fee, who plays the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. In Titanic, the set of the titular ship was tilted diagonally to film the sinking scenes – much like the Dreadnought in Rebel Moon: Part Two is tipped at an angle.

"When I read it in the script, I said, 'How are we going to shoot that?'" Skrein continues. "And then when they said we're going to do a gimbal, I thought, 'Okay, so we're going to just do 30 metres or whatever, and then reset.' And I thought, 'Okay, well, I believe in the magic of cinema, and that Zack guy's got a bit of experience, so I think he'll be alright.' And when I saw it, I said, 'Wow, this is unbelievable.' I thought it was really brilliant. And presumably the Snyder Cut is going to be even better, because we're going to have blood and more and crazy stuff." 

As for Boutella, she has nothing but praise for her co-star. "It was pretty intense. I know Ed from before, we were supposed to do a few projects together," she explains. "And this was our first one. He does not look like this in real life at all. He's the kindest. He just went for it so much that he didn't give me the choice but to go there. At times I had to go home at night and remind myself this is Ed, it's not the character, because he was really intimidating, which was very helpful to play the part, but it was also very collaborative. And we had to do a lot together, like we had those acting scenes. And in movie number one, we had this giant fight, and in this one also, so we did spend a lot of time together. And it's really important when you do these kinds of scenes that you're doing it with somebody who's just so helpful and nice to be around, and kind and patient also."

Noble and Kora's round two isn't the only action to expect in the sequel, either. "It's an assault film," says Snyder. "The Imperium forces are going to annihilate our villagers, and they have to figure out how to defend themselves, and other things I won't spoil. I think that's what all of our inspiration was, to be like, okay, we're going to make [a war film]. In the course of making this movie, we made maybe three or four different movies. We made a Western, we made a road picture, a gather the soldiers movie, we made an agricultural film, it feels like, when we were harvesting the wheat. And then we made a full blown war movie at the end, that is just pretty intense."

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon has found a home on Netflix as a two part sci-fi epic – but the story seems far from over, with sprawling mythology and massive worldbuilding leaving the way wide open for more stories. Without spoiling any specifics, Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver certainly leaves the door open for another chapter in the tale, too. 

While talking to Snyder and the cast about The Scargiver, we asked what the future might have in store. 

"We definitely have a story in mind, if we were to go forward," Snyder tells us. "We're waiting to have the totality of these movies come out, including the director's cut. But yeah, excited to make more Rebel Moon movies, if that was in the offing."

Staz Nair, who plays the regal, griffin-taming Tarak, also emphasizes just how much there is left to explore. "Zack has a lore for this project that extends something like 800, 900, 1000 years – how many hundreds of years back, and how many hundreds of years forwards. I think when you've spent 30 years creating a project and worlds like this, the scope is endless. Obviously, I think we're quietly hopeful and looking forward to seeing what happens."

Plus, there is one character in particular who still remains a fairly shadowy presence. Fra Fee's villainous Regent Balisarius is the big bad of the movies, but so far has appeared mostly in flashbacks. 

Fee, though, hasn't been clued in on the future of his villain. "I'm not sure if I know what the future holds, necessarily," he tells us. "There is a lot more story to be told. When I first chatted with Zack about coming on board this project, I was blown away with just this teeming imagination. And he has created a universe that is just so expansive, and seemingly infinite in all directions, because, of course, I needed to ask him about Balisarius's backstory. We see fragments of his story in these first two films and a few flashbacks. And I'm playing an older version of myself, so there's obviously the young story to be told… This has been a wonderful first outing. And, hopefully, we get to see more of this story, because there's a lot more to come. And it's a world that I've certainly fallen in love with."

Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver might be bringing Zack Snyder's two-part sci-fi epic to a (potential) close, but there's still more to come from the universe. 

There are extended director's cuts for both movies on the way to Netflix, which will clock in at around three hours each. We sat down with Snyder and the cast to talk about The Scargiver – and, in the process, we learned more about the upcoming new versions of both movies. 

"The thing I'm most excited about people seeing when they watch the director's cut is, rather than it being an extended or different version of these movies, they're kind of like this alternate universe version of the movie," Snyder tells us. "That's kind of how I describe them. Even though, of course, there's many scenes that are the same, there's so much that's different, even the points of view are slightly different. And I think that'd be fun for audiences to see this much deeper dive. Each of them is one hour longer, the two movies together are six hours. And I think that that's going to be fun for fans. And also, this is very adult as a difference." 

Ed Skrein, who plays the villainous Admiral Noble, has more to say on the adult nature of the new versions. "We had a 179 page script, so the first 11 pages of that, no one's ever seen, because by nature it could only be in the R-rated cut," he says. "It is horror. And that was fun to shoot, and I'm excited for people to see that."

There's one other scene in particular, though, that has Skrein's attention. "Also, I don't know whether to be worried or excited, because the people at Netflix keep saying to me, 'Have you seen the R-rated cut yet?' and they say, 'Have you seen your alien sex scene yet?'" he says. Noble is seen in a dalliance with an alien creature in the standard version of A Child of Fire, though the movie cuts away before we see anything too graphic...

"They're like, 'It's crazy. You really went for it, didn't you?'" he continues. "And I'm like, 'I go for it every take and scene, I don't hold back.' So I'm super excited to see that. And I hope I don't become too much of a meme." 

Skrein's NSFW tentacle tangle won't be the only thing that's different in the new versions of the films, either. "The director's cut specifically is a lot more gritty and a lot more scuzzy," says Staz Nair, who plays the griffin-taming Tarak. "If we were living in a dystopian future where there was one planet autonomously dictating how and where people eat, surviving at the cost of one kind of superpower, people would be horrible. People don't get held accountable for what they do in their own countries. If you could do something and then go off world and have no one reprimand you for it, the world would be dirty, it would be dangerous, it would be scary and quite dark. A lot of the time when we do these beautiful dystopian science fiction stories, we lose some of the realism for the sake of charm, and these kinds of worlds, they wouldn't be charming, they would be difficult. And I think the director's cut gives more of that scuzzy realism."

Keep your eyes peeled for the details, too. "There are a lot of Easter eggs," Sofia Boutella, who plays Kora, AKA the Scargiver herself, teases. "A lot of what you see or hear in movie one, you understand the full scope of it in the extended. Like, 'Oh, that's what happened.'"

Zack Snyder might be busy with the vast, sci-fi universe of Rebel Moon at Netflix, but he's already thinking about his next project. 

Over the years, Snyder has mentioned a handful of ideas for future films, which, so far, haven't made it into production: the likes of his King Arthur movie, the more grounded film Horse Latitudes – about a photographer and a soldier in South America – and his "incredibly homoerotic, super violent, super sexual" Alexander the Great script have all been discussed. 

We spoke to Snyder about Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver, and our conversation also touched on what the director is planning next – and whether it might be any of those films. 

"Illusions is also one of those movies," Snyder notes, referring to a mooted adaptation of Richard Bach's novel Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, which Snyder has previously cited as one of his influences. 

"It could be one of those, I don't want to say exactly, because it's going to be a bit of a surprise," he says of his next project. "I really wanted to do something that's not a visual effects extravaganza, just because I'd like to just do something a little grounded. Horse Latitudes is a perfect example of that, it's much more just like a movie we can go film. I know that sounds, like, 'Isn't that every movie?' But a movie like this [Rebel Moon], there's nothing for free. There's nothing to film unless you build it. So, it'd be nice to not have to do that."

Zack Snyder and director's cuts go hand in hand, though there's one film in particular that the director still feels he has unfinished business with. 

We sat down with Snyder to talk all things Rebel Moon, but, naturally, our conversation touched on Snyder's other projects, too, including the director's cut of Sucker Punch. Snyder has said multiple times over the years that he'd like to release an alternate version of the movie – and we asked why. 

"The compromises we made on the PG-13 version of that movie, and just really mashing it down to the lowest common denominator, not to be rude – I think that the movie suffers from not having this full exploration," Snyder explains. "Because I wrote it in response – it really is a critique, it was at the time for me, of genre, the genre experience. Because I was kind of new to genre. I didn't know. I did Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen, and now I had this – and Sucker Punch was like the weirdo movie that I just felt like I needed to [make about] sort of my experience with fandom, and I found myself in the heart of genre; I didn't set out to be a genre filmmaker, it just happened."

Sucker Punch stars Emily Browning as a young woman, known as Babydoll, who is institutionalized by her abusive stepfather following the death of her mother. Babydoll deals with her new life – and plans to flee the institution – by escaping into several layers of alternate realities, which leads to fantastical dream sequences. 

"And so, my analysis of genre was what Sucker Punch kind of became," Snyder continues. "And I thought that no one really got that when I released the movie. It was shocking to me how – which I think I've carried throughout my career, now, is this – [it was] shocking to me on how misunderstood the movie was. I thought it was super obvious, but I guess it wasn't. 

"What I envisioned originally for the film, it was much more on the nose about that it was really, super deconstructivist of genre," he adds. "And so, yeah, I'd love to get at that, and kind of give everyone a little bit more of that, that we filmed, it just never made it in the movie." 

While it remains to be seen if the Snyder Cut of Sucker Punch will ever see the light of day, there are extended versions of Rebel Moon Parts One and Two arriving on Netflix soon. Plus, there's the standard version of Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver, which lands on April 19.

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver has an action-packed, epic new trailer – and it teases a massive battle still to come. 

The new trailer is available to watch on Netflix under Part Two's landing page. The footage shows Kora and her band of rebels gearing up for a huge battle with the Motherworld, defending the peaceful farming moon of Veldt and training the villagers for war. "Their nightmare is us fighting together to defend something we love," Kora says in the trailer. Ominously, a lot of ships arrive to the moon towards the end of the clip. It also looks like there might be some more flashbacks to Kora's past in the upcoming sequel, judging by her shorter hair in some moments. 

Of course, Part One of the Zack Snyder sci-fi, titled A Child of Fire, has only just hit the streamer. You might be surprised, then, to learn that Part Two is right around the corner, arriving in April. 

There's also a synopsis to get your teeth stuck into: "The rebels gear up for battle against the Motherworld as unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge – and legends are made."

By the sounds of things, The Scargiver is going to be a war movie on a huge scale. "I remember Zack saying with the second movie that he wanted it to feel like Dunkirk," Admiral Noble actor Ed Skrein told GamesRadar+ of the upcoming sequel. "So it's like, there's a space at the beginning, and then it's going off. And it's really, really going off. And, you know, Return of the King, Lord of the Rings vibes where it's like, 'Okay, we kind of know where they're going.' It's like, 'Alright, now let's just sit back, eat loads of popcorn, and watch it all kickoff.'"

When is Rebel Moon Part Two out on Netflix?

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is scheduled for release on April 19, 2024. There's no time confirmed just yet, but most Netflix releases go live at 12am PT/3am ET/8am GMT. 

A Child of Fire ended up having its release date shifted slightly earlier, though, to  7pm PT/10pm ET/2am GMT on December 21. That hasn't happened to The Scargiver just yet, but watch this space in case Netflix shuffles things around again. 

There are also extended director's cuts on the way, though they don't yet have confirmed release dates.

It's no secret that Zack Snyder loves Fortnite – and it turns out the director would also happily helm a film version of the game. 

"Of course," Snyder said when asked by Etalk if he'd adapt Fortnite for the big screen. "I really wanted to make some Fortnite skins for the movie [Rebel Moon], first of all, just like as the most obviously basic involvement. But yeah, look, Fortnite is an amazing world, and it is an amazing distraction for me. But it's really cool, and the alchemy that they've created there is really unique. When I started playing it, I thought I knew what it was, and then it was something entirely different." 

"You definitely don't know," Snyder added. "You definitely can never say never, that's my mantra in this business." 

Snyder revealed his love for the game earlier this year. "My son and I got into Fortnite. I kind of wanted to play it with him and then he didn't like it, so then I ended up just playing it by myself," he commented. "I went down a bad rabbit hole with Fortnite in the sense that I took a pretty deep dive… I was Meeseeks from Rick and Morty." 

For now, though, Snyder is busy with the Rebel Moon universe at Netflix. Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire is out on Netflix this December 22, with Part Two – The Scargiver following in April.

Zack Snyder has revealed more about the Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire director's cut, and it will have a brand new opening focusing on Ed Skrein's villainous Admiral Noble. 

The director's cut is coming in 2024, and will be much longer than the standard version, with new scenes that will add to the story. 

"It's, like, an hour longer and has a whole other opening that's all Ed," Snyder told Express.co.uk. "It's really crazy.”

Skrein's Noble is part of the Motherworld, the brutal dictatorship ruling the universe. He arrives to the peaceful farming moon of Veldt, which spells disaster for the community: that spurs Sofia Boutella's Kora to set out seeking warriors who can help her make a stand against the Motherworld's armies. 

The ensemble cast includes Ray Fisher as revolutionary Darian Bloodaxe, Staz Nair as the regal Tarak, Doona Bae as legendary swordswoman Nemesis, E. Duffy as resistance fighter Milius, Djimon Hounsou as former Motherworld General Titus, Charlie Hunnam as smuggler Kai, and Michiel Huisman as Veltdian farmer Gunnar. Anthony Hopkins is the voice of robotic knight Jimmy, while Carey Elwes plays the former king. 

Rebel Moon – Part Two, titled The Scargiver, is also on the way, arriving in April 2024. "I remember Zack saying with the second movie that he wanted it to feel like Dunkirk," Skrein told GamesRadar+ of the follow-up. "So it's like, there's a space at the beginning, and then it's going off. And it's really, really going off. And, you know, Return of the King, Lord of the Rings vibes where it's like, 'Okay, we kind of know where they're going.' It's like, 'Alright, now let's just sit back, eat loads of popcorn, and watch it all kickoff.'"

Rebel Moon – Part One hits Netflix this December 21 in the US and December 22 in the UK, with a limited theatrical release from December 15. "The concept of mythology was really one of the places where we started," Zack Snyder tells GamesRadar+ of his sci-fi epic Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. "We have myths for all the origin stories of the Motherworld, what they believe. Basically the Genesis of their Bible, we had to write, and we wrote it out pretty extensively."

Rebel Moon is the beginning of an all original universe, and it's on a huge scale. While the story revolves around a woman's quest to save the peaceful moon of Veldt from the armies of the Motherworld (the brutal ruler of the universe), along the way, we get tantalizing glimpses at the sprawling mythology and history underpinning this  world. There are shades of Arthurian legend in the worldbuilding – Part One includes a princess with mysterious powers, noble, robotic knights who've laid down their weapons, and a tragically slain king. 

"That allowed us to evolve to characters like the robot, the Jimmys, and all those things that were really products of that mythology," Snyder continues. "They really had this worldview that was very specific, and I really loved that exercise, because I love Arthurian legend, and I love all that stuff, and I love trying to get it into something like this, because this is like science fantasy. It's not hard sci-fi, as they say. It's pretty soft, in the best possible way, because it really allows mythological symbolism to be everywhere. No one cares about how the spaceships work, you know what I mean? Everything's much more impressionistic. It can all mean something, and I think that's what we were trying for." 

Connecting to the world

Sofia Boutella's Kora is at the center of Part One as she sets off to recruit warriors to defend Veldt. Each fighter she finds has a curious past of their own, which opens up the world and its mythology even further. Staz Nair, who plays a character named Tarak – who finds himself in indentured servitude, despite a regal past – tells us how his own heritage helped influence his character's place in the universe. 

"Zack allowed me to work with the language coach and the language specialists to create a language that was based on my language – or half my language, I'm half-Russian, half-Indian," says Nair of developing the Samandritan language, his character's native tongue. "And my wife's [language] is Portuguese. So he allowed me not only to put myself into it, but put my wife [in], so it's a mixture of Portuguese and Russian. He doesn't have to do that. And it's a wonderful way to insert yourself into the character, and before you even start, personalize the character. So I was very, very grateful for that." 

Nair also has a particularly awe-inspiring introduction that involves taming a Bennu, a majestic, griffin-like animal – and, this time, he found his own way to connect with the material. "What we have to do is find a bit of realism, because I've never had to tame a 50-foot griffin creature," he says. "But what I connected to is, I used to train pit bulls that were aggressive, trying to get them trained so they can be re-homed. And what I realized is, to do that, you have to have a sense of strength, but a sense of intimacy, and calmness, and respect when it comes to taming these kinds of animals. So it was a lot of fun. And, also, the bird – Zack and I agreed – it represents Tarak in many ways. Tarak is trapped like this bird and this is his moment of redemption. He finds a creature that's from his home planet, and he realizes this is the moment to step up and stand up to the plate." 

Ray Fisher, who plays the revolutionary Darian Bloodaxe, had a similar method of finding his way through the vast scale of the universe. "With Zack Snyder, you just go big, right?" he says. "You go big. And for me, what I like to try to do is, I like to try to make the world a bit smaller for myself. Even though we're in this big galaxy, my character comes from one place, and figuring out what the culture is, how that flow is, and really making it specific to me in that environment allows me to live more freely in that space without getting overwhelmed by like, 'Okay, spaceships, planets, different aliens, different culture, different races of this and that.' It helps to really make the performance more nuanced, and my understanding of it a bit more nuanced."

Of course, Fisher has some experience joining a vast Snyder-verse: he previously played Cyborg in the DCEU. "It was great," Fisher says of returning to work with Snyder. "The work, obviously, that we've worked on before with Zack Snyder's Justice League was phenomenal. Any chance I get to be on a Zack Snyder set, I'm there. [I said,] 'Look, it doesn't matter. I'll take a walk on, make me a zombie in Army of the Dead 2, or whatever.' It's a great thing to be around good people in the business who make good work – work you respect. And I'm a huge geek. I know Zack's a big geek for this kind of stuff, too, so we just connect on a very easygoing level." 

As for the risk of getting lost in the universe, it comes in handy that Snyder is something of an encyclopedia of Rebel Moon lore. "And it just helps that we have Zack who really lives for this stuff, and lived with it for decades," says Michiel Huisman, who plays Veltdian farmer Gunnar. "He really knew up till the minutest details the story he wanted to tell and the story that he was telling. So there was never a moment where we would ask him, like, 'Where does this come from?' Or, 'How does this work?' and then he wouldn't have an answer."

"And we had the benefit of having so much of his imagination brought to life: the practical sets, the costumes, the props," chimes in E. Duffy, who plays revolutionary fighter Milius. "So it really becomes a lived experience." 

"Sometimes if we were working against a green screen or something, and we would ask him, like, 'What exactly are we looking at?' He would actually make a drawing, and show us what it would look like," says Huisman. ("If it wasn't drawn already," adds Fisher.) 

Meet the rebels

Like the others, Kora has a shadowy and painful past of her own; she's also a formidable warrior. "Zack loves to empower women. You can see in all his movies, women have their own voices," says Boutella, pointing out that even 300 has Lena Headey's Queen Gorgo. 

"Zack is really inspired by his mother, she was such a tough and strong woman," Boutella adds. "And you can see that he loves putting women up there. And I just love that he was given the opportunity and allowed to give this movie a woman as a lead. And not only that, but a woman with a strong ability, but that comes from a very, very particular and complicated past, that gives her that vulnerability."

"We were so lucky that we had characters that, if we had no fight scenes, would have been so interesting to play," adds Ed Skrein, who portrays the terrifying Admiral Noble, who arrives to subjugate Veldt. "There's so much emotion and so much range and so much tension, that as an acting job alone, it was delectable. And then the fight scenes: we get to do fight scenes and be shot by Zack, and work with Spider and Mel [Jin], and the greatest stunt guys in the world. We're so lucky on both levels."

Kora begins her journey with Huisman's Gunnar at her side, and the bond the duo share has a profound effect on the farmer as the movie goes on. "It was one of the things that really drew me to the character, the fact that he starts out being a pretty naive guy," Huisman says. "And he makes a mistake early on, a misjudgement, early on in the story. Part One is really about redemption for my character, so it's a big journey for that character, and one that I was very eager to take on." 

In contrast to Gunnar's naivety is the legendary, but jaded, General Titus, who, like Kora, once fought for the Motherworld. Kora seeks to recruit him to her cause, though, when she finds him, he's had something of a fall from grace. "[General Titus] seems to have a traumatic past," says Hounsou. "And obviously, that traumatic past has so much to do with the fact that he once worked for the Imperium and obviously committed tremendous atrocities back then for the Imperium. And so at some point, he had a conscious awakening, and he was asked to exterminate a group of people. And at that point, he had an awakening and that awakening made him change heart, and certainly he became devoted to the more oppressed and innocent people." 

Also looking out for those oppressed and innocent people are the revolutionaries of this universe, led by brother-sister duo Darian and Devra Bloodaxe. One of their fighters is a warrior named Milius, portrayed by Duffy. "They are a very dedicated member of the Bloodaxe resistance," says Duffy of Milius. "And they found their way to the crew, in a similar way that all the other soldiers of the Bloodaxe resistance do, which is people with a sense of loyalty and spirit, and looking for a sense of purpose and cause. All of that is very vague, but you will find out way more specifics in Part Two." 

Skrein and Boutella have a similar tease about what's to come. "[Snyder] didn't write a story that was just a go-to story, that was just pre-thought, pre-written storylines," Boutella says. "It's really different, what's written in this project. You'll find out more in movie number two of their complexities." 

"And in the extended cut," adds Skrein, to which Boutella agrees: "Even more so in the extended cut." 

So, while there's plenty to get your teeth into in Part One, don't forget that those extended director's cuts and Part Two are right around the corner – with even more of this vast universe waiting to be explored.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon – Part One revolves around a woman's mission to save the peaceful farming moon of Veldt that she calls home from a brutal enemy; as we learn in the film's opening scenes, the cruel and powerful Motherworld intends to bleed Veldt dry for its resources, leaving its subjugated people to starve. 

That's where Sofia Boutella's Kora comes in. She sets off on a dangerous journey to recruit a team of allies who can help her defend the moon and its gentle villagers. But, as we know, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire isn't the full story. 

Part Two, titled The Scargiver, is just around the corner, arriving in April 2024. That means there's plenty still to come – and, according to Ed Skrein, who plays the fearsome, villainous Admiral Noble in the films, Part Two is set to be seriously epic. 

"I remember Zack saying with the second movie that he wanted it to feel like Dunkirk," Skrein tells GamesRadar+ when we meet in London, referring to Christopher Nolan's World War 2 movie. "So it's like, there's a space at the beginning, and then it's going off. And it's really, really going off. And, you know, Return of the King, Lord of the Rings vibes where it's like, 'Okay, we kind of know where they're going.' It's like, 'Alright, now let's just sit back, eat loads of popcorn, and watch it all kickoff.'"

It's no surprise that the ending of the two-part saga sounds huge. When GR+ meets with Snyder, he tells us that the original screenplay for Rebel Moon was some 200 pages long, and the project ended up in halves after he was reluctant to cut it down. That means that both parts are telling a single, unified story – but they're still very different, with the follow-up going heavy on the action. "You'd think that, 'Oh, if it's one long movie, the tones will be pretty similar, just would have continued through,'" he says. "But movie two is a much different vibe, because if movie one was like, 'Here's all the characters, let's go find them and bring them together and then come back to Veldt,' movie two is really like a war movie. The tone is different."

Delving deeper

But action isn't all you can expect from Part Two. Michiel Huisman, who plays naive, Veltdian farmer Gunnar in A Child of Fire, hints that the follow-up will go deeper on each character that Kora recruits across Part One. "In Part One, we only have so much time to introduce the worlds and the characters," he says. "And I think in Part Two, we get to know them a lot better."

It's a sentiment that Ray Fisher, who plays revolutionary warrior Darian Bloodaxe, shares. "Bigger action. I'm trying to use one word, so I don't spoil anything, but big action, and a lot of exploration of the characters that you are going to love in Part One," he reveals of what to expect from The Scargiver. Adds his fellow revolutionary E. Duffy, who plays a fighter named Milius: "That's what's exciting about Part One, too, is that it's just constant teasers." 

Boutella also promises that The Scargiver will give each rebel their moment in the spotlight. "There are no characters that are left aside," she says. "It goes really deeper with every single person. You get the backstory and then get to understand why they're where they are, and why they're who they are."

Djimon Hounsou and Staz Nair, who bring to life former Motherworld soldier General Titus and the once-regal, now-captured Tarak, similarly tease that Part Two will be delving into darker subject matters as it explores each character. "You would see a better Tarak and you will see a better General Titus," Hounsou says. "And certainly, it will give you an opportunity to see how they deal with their own demons."

"You get to see how they deal with their demons, how they deal with each other," Nair adds. "This really has to be seen as a Part One and Part Two. There's a reason why it's not called Rebel Moon One and Rebel Moon Two: these are two parts of the same whole. And what you get is really a deeper dive into the individuals. You really get to understand their backstories, how they got to where they were when you found them, and inevitably connect even more and relate even more to this story. This is ultimately a story about seven humans. We're heroes; we're not superheroes. We are flawed. We are imperfect. And you get to see that transition back to redemption a lot more, and some very, very vicious war." 

And, as Skrein says, if you love A Child of Fire, there's plenty more where that came from, with not just Part Two, but also extended director's cuts on the horizon. "That's the amazing thing about it, is like – I hope people enjoy the movie and get to the end of it, and are like, 'Wow.' And the idea that we've already shot a whole 'nother – exactly what you've seen, but again, and then some because of the extended cuts," he says. "That you have hours and hours and hours on top of this, I think that's what's interesting and exciting about it. I suppose it's like the difference between a limited series and a series that goes on, it's like, 'Oh, we've got seasons of this.' So if you're into it from the pilot, then we've got a lot for you."

But how far along is The Scargiver? Well, according to Snyder, it's still very much a work in progress. "I'm in the middle of editing right now," he says. "We're almost done. So I'm here – when you walk out, I have to look at some cuts from my editor, who just is in Los Angeles going like, 'What about this?' I'm like, 'Oh, jeez, okay.' 

"I'm excited for audiences to see Two, also because it really has a climactic ending," he adds. A sci-fi, Dunkirk-esque war movie with characters dealing with their demons and fighting a ferocious battle for freedom? Sign us up.

Rebel Moon isn't the only universe Zack Snyder has brewing on Netflix. 

2021 saw the release of Army of the Dead, the director's return to the zombie genre; his feature directorial debut was Dawn of the Dead, a remake of George Romero's classic. 

Army of the Dead is anything but a straightforward undead movie, though, weaving in a time loop, aliens, and mythological vaults that are almost impossible to crack (expanded on further in prequel Army of Thieves). 

Another Army of the Dead prequel in the form of an animated series featuring a star-studded cast was also set to hit Netflix, though updates on the project have been scarce in the years following the movie's release. Snyder, though, is still very excited about the future. 

"I'm a huge fan of the Army universe," he tells GamesRadar+ when we sit down in a London hotel to talk Rebel Moon. "We were working on – and are trying to get back up – our Army animated series, which was really cool. We recorded the whole thing, we recorded all the voices – Christian Slater, all these cool people. Super fun. 

"In that, we really did the same thing of developing this big world building concept," he continues, referencing the sizeable mythology created for Rebel Moon. "My idea for Army 2 is Planet of the Dead, which is a much more – [it] scales in a crazy way, so super excited about it. Right now, obviously I'm trying to run parallel courses with these two monsters, but [I'm] really excited that people are excited to see more from the Army universe because I love it."

Zack Snyder has revealed his favorite movie of the year – and we have to say, he has great taste. 

In conversation with Albert Laro at a Rebel Moon event, the filmmaker shared that his favorite film of 2023 is none other than Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. 

That might not come as a huge surprise, considering Oppenheimer is an excellent movie – in fact, it's Total Film magazine's film of the year. 

Plus, Snyder and Nolan are pals; Nolan is a producer on Snyder's DCEU movies, and, per The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan invited Snyder (and Todd Phillips, Denis Villeneuve, and Paul Thomas Anderson) to an early screening of Oppenheimer. 

Elsewhere in the interview, Snyder revealed that a movie he's excited to see soon is Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest, while his two picks for movies that have inspired him the most as a director are the original Star Wars, which made him want to make films in the first place, and Akira Kurosawa's Ran. 

In fact, Snyder's next movie, Rebel Moon, was once a Star Wars pitch, though it's arriving on Netflix imminently as an all original story. The film sees Sofia Boutella's Kora, a warrior with a mysterious past, set out to recruit fighters to help her protect her peaceful home from the brutal army of the Motherworld. 

The project is arriving in two parts, with Part Two, titled The Scargiver, arriving in April – there are also extended director's cuts on the way, too.

From the director of Man of Steel and 300, the new sci-fi Netflix film follows a universe controlled by a corrupt government. To fight back, a young woman named Kora (played by Sofia Boutella) sets out on a mission to make a stand against the evil Motherworld. 

The idea for the film was once a pitch for a Star Wars movie before being redeveloped into an original idea. Alongside Boutella, the movie also stars Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Jena Malone, Fra Fee, Ed Skrein, and Anthony Hopkins. 

The first reactions are now here following the film's UK premiere. Early viewers have been calling it full of epic world-building, while some criticisms of the film have been that it spends too much time setting up Part Two.

"Okay #RebelMoon is quite simply epic," writes GamesRadar+’s Molly Edwards. "Massive scale, beautiful visuals (of course), awesome action, and some really fascinating mythology. There’s lots of exciting set-up for what’s to come, but it’s still very satisfying as its own movie ahead of Part 2. Jimmy has also stolen my heart."

Why Now World's Maria Lattila writes: "Oh, are we allowed to talk about #RebelMoon now? Visually very handsome and flows well but suffers from Part One Syndrome. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t keen on The Scargiver now though!"

The Hollywood Handle's Thomas Michael tweets: "Zack Snyder's #RebelMoon - Part One: A Child On Fire delivers & serves a triumphant welcome to a whole new & promising universe while featuring some of my favourite Zack Snyder moments to date. (+ a rivettingly badass, kickass, third act)."

"#RebelMoon took a while to find its groove, there's so much to explore and world-build," writes critic Sunny Ramgolam. "It excels in action as Snyder knows best and by the end I was on-board. I'm excited for a Part 2 and without all the baggage and expectation of the Star Wars series."

James Lister writes: "I've seen #RebelMoon and it is a visually awesome and epically ambitious ride. While not perfect, this first part will definitely leave you wanting more. Bring on PART TWO."

Another viewer, who saw it early at CCXP, writes: "Action reminds me of Batman in the Snyder Cut. The movie is beautifully shot, it feels like a fusion of Gladiator, Star Wars and Justice League in tone." However, they go on to add that, "Things move too fast, too much narration giving exposition to compensate the shorter theatrical version."

Rebel Moon is being split into two parts with Snyder teasing that the first movie will end on a "crazy cliffhanger" that sets up Part 2. "Tonally, they're very different movies," Snyder explains in the new issue of Total Film. "In Part 1 we spend a lot of time in the village, having this real relationship to the place and people. So that when we actually have to fight and die for them, we care about them."

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon is arriving on Netflix in two parts, with the first installment coming this year and the sequel releasing a few months later. 

Part 1, titled A Child of Fire, sees a young woman named Kora (played by Sofia Boutella) seeking allies to help her make a stand against the villainous Motherworld, which is threatening the peaceful farming planet of Veldt.  

Speaking in the new 2024 preview issue of Total Film, which hits shelves this week, Snyder reveals more about what to expect of Part 1's sequel, which is titled The Scargiver.  

"The truth is that movie one is a set-up for movie two," Snyder teases. "The end is a crazy cliffhanger that launches you into The Scargiver."

If Part 1 is where Snyder will embed viewers in his original science-fiction world, and make you fall in love with its ragtag assembly of rebels, Part 2 is where all that set-up will pay off with the war for Veldt. 

"Tonally, they're very different movies," Snyder explains. "In Part 1 we spend a lot of time in the village, having this real relationship to the place and people. So that when we actually have to fight and die for them, we care about them."

Zack Snyder has revealed the one Marvel project he'd consider directing. 

Snyder has of course helmed many superhero movies before, but over in the DC universe – he directed Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder's Justice League, but has since left the superhero sphere. 

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder revealed that he'd consider directing a Daredevil and Elektra movie for Marvel, potentially adapting Elektra Lives Again – a graphic penned by Frank Miller. "But that's it," Snyder said. 

In the same interview, Snyder also commented that he'd consider returning to DC to adapt another of Miller's works: The Dark Knight Returns. 

At the moment, though, Snyder has a whole new franchise on his hands over at Netflix. Rebel Moon Part 1 launches this December on the streamer – with a limited theatrical release – and Part 2 is following in April 2024. The films are an original sci-fi story that grew from an old Star Wars pitch of Snyder's, which will see a warrior named Kora seeking allies to help her make a stand against the brutal Motherworld. 

Snyder recently talked to our sister publication SFX magazine about the future ahead for Rebel Moon, which involves a podcast, comic books, and an animated movie. "These are stories that we pitch to each other and I have to hear them and say, 'That's cool, that works in the world.' So it's happening on a small scale right now... A trilogy of sequels is cool," he said.

As for Marvel, next up is Echo, a Hawkeye spin-off that will feature Charlie Cox's Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin, and stars Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon is hitting Netflix in two parts – with directors' cuts to follow – but it was almost made as a TV show, thanks to the director's experience with his DC epic Justice League.

By the time Rebel Moon was being pitched as a TV show, Justice League had reached cinemas. Snyder left the project before its release and Joss Whedon took over reshoots, changing the plot and tone drastically. The situation was, by most accounts, unpleasant.

"Zack had come off the worst professional experience of his life," Eric Newman, speaking in the new issue of SFX magazine, which features Doctor Who on the cover, says of Justice League. Newman produced Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake and is a co-producer on Rebel Moon. 

The result was the director feeling unsure whether he should re-enter the filmmaking space. "I knew what I had made with Justice League, but no one had seen it – it didn't really exist," he says, referring to the once mythological, now-real Snyder Cut. "Justice League is four hours long, and so the idea of making an eight-hour TV show didn't seem like that big of a deal. I felt like I can direct all eight episodes and make a House of the Dragon thing. I was pitching Game of Thrones in space. That's a pretty easy pitch, everyone pitches that, but I meant it. Post-Justice League, it did appeal to me, the idea of this complete world-building exercise where we just go on a deep dive into this universe that has no canon, and we're answering only to ourselves."

In other words, Rebel Moon would be Zack Snyder unleashed – unbound by the expectations of fandom, able to build a universe out of nothing – but everyone involved knew it had to be, at least to kickstart this fresh franchise, a movie.

"We felt like it would be best for the quality of the project," Deborah Snyder says. "We can go and do TV once we've established it, but because it didn't exist, we had the best shot of getting the money we needed by making it a film."

As for Zack's feelings about filmmaking, something miraculous happened during the pandemic: the Snyder Cut saw the light of day.

"In some ways, the Snyder Cut and his experience on Army of the Dead with Netflix, they conspired to make him feel more comfortable in the movie space again," Newman says. The result wasn't just one movie, but two.

Netflix has unveiled a new trailer for Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon – and it's seriously epic. 

In the clip, which can be viewed above, we see the army of the sinister Imperium arrive at a peaceful planet. Sofia Boutella's Kora realizes that they have no choice but to fight back – and we see her putting together a crew of rebels to help. 

The trailer also showcases the impressive scale of the film, which Snyder has teased before will be comparable to Man of Steel's opening. 

The sci-fi movie is split into two parts, and Netflix has already released an action-packed trailer focusing on both films in one. This is the first trailer purely for Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, though. 

Along with Boutella, the Rebel Moon cast includes Ed Skrein, Fra Fee, Charlie Hunnam, Corey Stoll, Djimon Hounsou, Cary Elwes, Jena Malone, Doona Bae, and Ray Fisher.

Rebel Moon Part 1 will have a runtime of two hours and 13 minutes, with the director's cut being close to three hours. The director's cut will contain footage that adds to the story, rather than just including deleted scenes. Part 1 is getting a limited theatrical release in Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, and London.

This isn't Snyder's only Netflix project, and, excitingly, it seems his work for the streamer is all connected, with the director telling Total Film that the unfinished Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas animated show would have set up a Rebel Moon crossover. "At one point in the show, they go through a portal into another dimension, and there are characters in that other dimension that they come across," he revealed, "In Rebel Moon, they're in this bar, and one of the aliens is one of the characters from the animatic. So it's definitely a shared universe."

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon is headed to theaters for a limited time ahead of its Netflix debut.

Per Snyder himself, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is set to hit theaters on December 15 in Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, and London – and will be screened in 70mm. Tickets can be purchased starting on November 15.

Though Netflix has rated the film PG-13, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has given Rebel Moon a 15 rating (the equivalent of an R in the US) for "strong violence" and "sexual threat." Part One has a runtime of 2 hours and 14 minutes – putting the director's cut at around 3 hours total.

The film follows a young woman (Sofia Boutella) with a mysterious past who must build an army to fight back against the tyrannical forces who are threatening her home and community. Snyder directs from a screenplay penned by himself, Kurt Johnstad, and Shay Hatten.

The cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Corey Stoll, Djimon Hounsou, Cary Elwes, Jena Malone, Michiel Huisman, Staz Nair, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, and Anthony Hopkins, who voices the last member of a race of mechanical knights. Rebel Moon was initially intended to be a Star Wars installment before becoming part of its own shared universe with Snyder's Army of the Dead.

Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski has praised Justice League director Zack Snyder and actor Dave Bautista - saying that both of them will be the "perfect" fit for a movie adaptation.

In an interview with ComicBook, Bleszinski is asked what he thought about Zack Snyder adapting Gears of War, to which the developer replies: "I think Zack Snyder is an amazing director when he is working with existing IP." Praising the director's work on the Dawn of the Dead remake, as well as 300 and "his superhero movies," Bleszinski explains: "The thing is, I think he'd be a great fit for it."

It's no secret that former WWE wrestler and Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista wants to take on the role of Marcus Fenix, and CliffyB seems to be on board. After sharing his thoughts on Snyder, Bleszinski addresses Bautista's enthusiasm for the role. "I used to say back in the day, that I didn't want a big wrestler to play Marcus Fenix," the developer says, "and then I had the epiphany of years back, wrestlers are not only athletes, they're actors. We had that epiphany in the eighties." 

"Dave Bautista man, the dude dressed up in Gears armor online," Bleszinski adds, "He's proven his range from the last Blade Runner movie through to him playing Drax The Destroyer and all that. [...] I think he'd be perfect for it. He's got the body type." Although CliffyB has given his blessing to both Snyder and Bautista, there's really only one thing the developer wants from a Gears of War adaptation: "The biggest thing I hope for is that it has heart."

We don't yet know if Bautista has booked the role of Marcus Fenix, but we do know that Netflix's Gears of War movie will be penned by Dune and Doctor Strange writer Jon Spaihts. There's no release date for the project yet either, we just know that a live-action feature film based on Gears of War is in development for the streaming service.

Zack Snyder's upcoming sci-fi epic Rebel Moon will be expanding out from the screen and onto the comics page. The director just announced a new tie-in comic, Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe, which will be published by Titan in 2024.

Snyder's tweet reads: "Excited to announce that the @RebelMoon universe is expanding beyond the screen with a prequel comic series. Issue 1 of REBEL MOON: HOUSE OF THE BLOODAXE will be published by @TitanComics on January 10, 2024, and available wherever comics are sold."

An email from Titan followed swiftly after and confirmed that the comic is a four-issue series and will act as a prequel to the first of the two Rebel Moon films. It will be written by Mags Visaggio, drawn by Clark Bint, and colored by Francesco Segala. 

Rebel Moon is a brand new space opera about a galaxy controlled by the oppressive forces of the Mother World. It follows a young woman, Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, who used to work for the forces of the fascist Imperium but now leads the fight back against them.

The comic's title refers to Darrian and Devra Bloodaxe, two resistance fighters played by Ray Fisher and Cleopatra Coleman in the movies. 

"I'm excited to collaborate with Mags to explore the rich and complex backstory of the Bloodaxe siblings," said Snyder. "In Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe, fans will get to discover their motivation, as well as the genesis of the rebellion."

Mags Visaggio described the comic as a "Shakespearean tragedy...It's all extremely personal, a family in conflict with its patriarch who is in conflict with himself at a moment when they need to be united. It's a story about failure and the consequences of failure."

Titan's official synopsis for House of the Bloodaxe reads:

"As war is looming on the horizon on the planet Shasu, the leader of the Bloodaxe family is conflicted between living up to his father's domineering legacy and maintaining the peace. It is up to him to settle the conflicts within himself, and his family, before the entire planet erupts in war."

Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe #1 will be published by Titan Comics on January 10.

Rebel Moon's runtime has now been revealed, and it means Zack Snyder's director's cut will be a nearly three-hour-long extravaganza.

Netflix's Tudum has confirmed that Rebel Moon Part 1 will be two hours and 13 minutes in a new update on their website. Looking back at Snyder's earlier comments to the publication, this spells a chunky Snyder Cut on the horizon.

"The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot," Snyder previously said. "It’s just more painted-in all the way. The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career."

What's more, Deborah Snyder told Total Film that this director's cut will add to the film as well. "The difference [this time] is that we’ve planned for it… it’s not an afterthought," Snyder explained. "We’re still tweaking, but they’ll probably be 45 minutes to an hour longer, each one. You get more character. You get a lot more of everything. It’s not just a few deleted scenes."

The sci-fi drama, which has been split into two parts, centers on a peaceful colony at the edge of space whose lives are suddenly turned upside down when they're attacked by the armies of a brutal dictator. The colony sends Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, as an envoy to seek help from neighboring planets. The ensemble cast also includes Charlie Hunnam, Corey Stoll, Djimon Hounsou, Cary Elwes, Jena Malone, Doona Bae, and Ray Fisher. It was previously reported that the extended director's cut would also receive an R rating.

The Flash is zooming onto our screens very soon, which means it's time to start preparing for a multiversal adventure. Naturally, that means there are some other movies to check out before you head to the theater. 

We've got the must-watch DC movies below to help you get ready for The Flash. They cover Barry Allen, General Zod, and Michael Keaton's Batman, so you'll be up to speed (no pun intended) for the new blockbuster in no time. 

Plus, our guide is completely spoiler free, so you can get a head start without fearing those pesky plot details. So, for all you need to know, look to the below. 

Justice League

Ezra Miller's Flash is first introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but all you really need to watch to get the lowdown on Barry Allen is Justice League. To be clear, that's the theatrical version, not Zack Snyder's Justice League, since the Snyder Cut is not actually canon. 

Justice League introduces Barry properly – the scene with his dad is important to understanding Barry's drive to save his mother's life in The Flash – and sees the Scarlet Speedster working with Ben Affleck's Batman; their friendship is another crucial part of the new DC movie. You'll also see Barry go up against the villainous Steppenwolf and meet Superman in a quest to save the world. 

Man of Steel

In The Flash, Barry accidentally travels to a different timeline, one where superheroes do not exist. He's also managed to arrive right when Michael Shannon's General Zod makes contact with Earth. Zod is the key antagonist of Man of Steel, which sees the Kryptonian general and Henry Cavill's Superman go head to head in a massive battle that almost destroys Metropolis. 

If you want a refresher on Zod's plans for Earth and what happened when he clashed with Supes, Man of Steel is a must-watch. It'll also make clear why Barry and Bruce Wayne so desperately need the help of Sasha Calle's Supergirl in The Flash – Zod is one formidable foe.  

Batman and Batman Returns

Michael Keaton's Batman is a key part of The Flash, which means getting familiar with his tenure as the Caped Crusader is essential. Keaton starred in both Batman and Batman Returns – Batman sees him go up against Jack Nicholson's Joker, while Batman Returns features Danny DeVito's Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman. 

While Keaton's Batman in The Flash is much older than the one of the Tim Burton movies (and he's retired, too), it won't hurt to recap his earlier adventures to better understand this version of the Dark Knight.

It's going to happen eventually. We all know it is.

With DC Films cultivating a new cinematic superhero universe which will pick up where The Flash's rewriting of current DC movie continuity leaves off, including a new Superman and Batman, at some point there's going to be a new cinematic Justice League.

And we're gonna guess - no shade intended - that whatever that looks like, it won't be much like Zack Snyder's massive, mythic version of the team. 

If only to make a clean break from Snyder's extremely distinctive (and occasionally polarizing) take on the Justice League, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Films version will likely be a total departure from what's come before.

And with Gunn's openness about taking inspiration directly from comic books for the movies and shows DC Films is developing, there's a classic comic version of the Justice League that could provide the perfect inspiration for a new Justice League movie. 

No, not Grant Morrison's vaunted 'pantheon' League. Though Newsarama does rate that version of the team as one of the best Justice League line-ups of all time, it might hew a little too close to the version of the team that's already been seen in the movies.

I'm talking about the Justice League International era.

Bwahahahaha.

If you're a comic fan of a certain age, just reading that onomatopoeia either made your eyes light up, or fade into a thousand league stare (pun intended, naturally).

If you groaned, I'll have to quote Jonathan Frakes and say, "I'm sorry, you're wrong."

If you "Bwahaha'd" along with me, congratulations on having outstanding taste, and may you be blessed with good fortune.

For those not in the know, the Justice League International era redefined and refocused the League in the late '80s following a string of disappointing rosters as well as the impact of 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths event, which rebooted DC continuity and started the entire universe over again - kinda like the 2011 story Flashpoint did decades later.

Created by writer JM Dematteis, co-writer and art plotter Keith Giffen, and artist Kevin Maguire, the '80s Justice League initially consisted mostly of newcomers like Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and the femme fatale/girl next door duo Fire & Ice anchored around veteran heroes Batman and Martian Manhunter. 

At the start, the JLI team was essentially the Bad News Bears of Justice Leagues, with Batman and Martian Manhunter trying to rebuild the League from the ground up with their new recruits.

The team quickly expanded to include a second squad operating in Europe, which included mainstays such as the Flash Wally West, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, and Wonder Woman. Then, when the team reorganized into a revived Justice League of America a few years later, many of the group's mainstays remained on the team, with Superman joining on as the leader and anchor of the roster.

Even after the JLI era came to its close, this line-up of the team has remained a cult favorite, recently appearing as the supporting cast in Tom King and Greg Smallwood's critically acclaimed Human Target limited series.

Now, with DC Films about to pull the same trick in rebooting its movie universe - in a film directly inspired by Flashpoint, no less - the jovial, larger-than-life Justice League International might just be the perfect team to turn to when it's time to find an inspiration for the new cinematic League.

More a gang of misfits finding family and purpose together than an epic collection of the world's greatest superheroes, the Justice League International was a turning point not just for the League itself, but for what the tone of a superhero team could feel like.

Everybody knows the MCU's Avengers as a quirky, jokey, almost familial team full of people who manage to stay somehow down to Earth despite also being larger-than-life heroes - quick with a quip, and often as liable to get caught up in Mjolnir-lifting contests as much as fighting supervillains.

But that super-team archetype, of heroes with feet of clay and mouths full of jokes taking on incredible cosmic enemies, didn't start with the Avengers - it didn't even start with Marvel Comics. 

The Fantastic Four may have birthed the concept of a team as a family, and the X-Men may have perfected the concept of superheroes as a soap opera, it's the Justice League International era that wrapped it all up in a laugh-a-minute, personality driven package.

Speaking of James Gunn, he just wrapped up one of Marvel's most well-received movie trilogies in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which so far seems to have stuck the landing with both fans and critics. And the Guardians franchise was built entirely around the idea of unique personalities coming together to bring out each other's strengths and weaknesses (and best one-liners).

That formula has even successfully followed Gunn into his DC cinematic forays so far, Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, which have the "gang of unlikely heroes trying to rally around the big objective" pacing down to an art.

What's more, between the upcoming Blue Beetle movie and DC Films' early slate of projects, the pieces for a big screen JLI-inspired roster are all coming together - from the new Batman in The Brave and the Bold, to the introduction of the Green Lantern Corps in Lanterns, and even the planned Booster Gold series. 

Just add Fire & Ice - who are about to star in their own Dawn of DC era comic title - and baby, you've got yourself a superhero stew going. What's more, the JLI's initial premise of rebuilding the Leagues could fit right into where the DC Films universe is already heading.

In other words, the Justice League International might just be the perfect inspiration for a new movie Justice League, with a mix of mainstays and newcomers all working to overcome their interpersonal conflicts while taking on big, epic conflicts seeming more or less right up James Gunn's alley.

So how about it, DC Films? Isn't it time we all "Bwahahaha'd" together again?

Maybe DC Films could also take some inspiration from the best Justice League stories of all time.

Zack Snyder has released a series of new images from his Snyderverse archive. The selection of never-before-seen pictures includes snaps of Henry Cavill’s Superman, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. 

While they’re all character shots set against a white backdrop, it’s pretty cool to see these iconic characters in a new light. Cavill features in three different looks, showing him in full Superman mode as well as his Clark Kent disguise. Eisenberg’s Luthor looks suitably terrifying in an orange prison jumpsuit while Gadot’s Diana Prince looks commanding in a regal coat in another. 

Snyder also shared other snapshots from his DC movies including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. These images feature Lawrence Fishburne as Perry White, Rebecca Buller as Jenny Jurwich, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul, and Michael Cassidy as Jimmy Olsen. The Army of the Dead director has been sharing the images for the last month as he promotes his fan event Snyder Con at the end of April. The event includes screenings and special panel events to raise awareness for charities including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Autumn Snyder Tribute Fund.

Despite hosting a DC event, there aren't currently any plans for Snyder to return for a new project. Instead, it seems like the studio is going in a new direction with co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiling their DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate, which plans to reboot Superman and Batman. 

Snyder is keeping busy though with his epic sci-fi Rebel Moon heading to Netflix in December. Meanwhile, Army of the Dead 2 is also in the works.

Zack Snyder has given an update on two of his upcoming projects for Netflix.

Back in 2021, it was revealed that the director’s Army of the Dead movie would get an animated prequel, titled Lost Vegas. Once slated for spring 2022, the series – partially directed by Snyder – would have revolved around the early days of the zombie outbreak and some of Army of the Dead’s key players. Now, though, Snyder has seemingly hit pause on the project.

"I will say there’s been a slight stall on the Lost Vegas animated [series]," Snyder revealed in an interview with The Nerd Queens. "For technical reasons, it went off the rails a little bit."

An Army of the Dead sequel was also previously announced, though any further extension of that universe appears contingent on Rebel Moon, Snyder’s new Netflix sci-fi movie set for release this December.

"As far as the Army Universe goes though: it’s still alive and well in my mind. I know exactly what I would do. It really depends on how we figure out how we go forward with Rebel Moon and [the] Rebel Moon universe," Snyder said. "It’s not a small-time commitment… a sci-fi thing at this scale does require a lot of attention to make it all make sense. It’s a very interconnected world."

While attention is still firmly on Rebel Moon, there was confirmation that Twilight of the Gods, an anime based on Norse mythology, is still in the works.

"Twilight of the Gods, on the other hand, has been forging ahead incredibly well and I’m really excited about it," Snyder said. "I work on it every day."

Zack Snyder is hosting a DC-themed convention over a long weekend in April, after posting a cryptic save the date tease from Darkseid himself. 

Speaking to The Nerd Queens on their YouTube channel, Snyder revealed that his three DCEU movies – Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder's Justice League – will screen at the three day convention, taking place over April 28 to April 30. 

Following each screening will be a panel, with Snyder teasing potential special guests onboard for the Man of Steel Q&A, though who might be in attendance has yet to be confirmed. The convention, which will be fundraising for AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention), will be held in California, but the intention is also to live-stream panels and potentially live-chats with Snyder for fans at home. Tickets are set to go on sale this Friday, March 24, though the finer details have yet to be worked out.

While this event is all about DC, Snyder has his hands full over at Netflix with his upcoming sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, which will be split into two parts and is based on an old Star Wars pitch of the director's. He also has Army of the Dead 2 in the works, along with two animated series. 

The DCEU, meanwhile, has been renamed the DCU and is now under the stewardship of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The duo unveiled the first stage of their slate, DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, earlier in the year – on the release schedule are the likes of a new Superman film (without Henry Cavill), a new Batman and Robin film, and a TV show about the Amazons.

Zack Snyder has shared a cryptic DC tease on Twitter. In the video, which you can check out below, a garbled song can be heard with a voiceover – from Darkseid, no less – telling listeners to "save the date" for April 28 to April 30. Snyder captioned the video "#fullcircle" 

Darkseid is the big bad of Zack Snyder's Justice League and figured heavily into the director's scrapped DC plans for Justice League 2 and 3. What exactly this video means is a mystery, but, considering the save the date is for a full weekend, it seems likely this will be a convention of some kind, though it's unclear for now. 

The campaign to Restore the SnyderVerse – AKA, make the scrapped Justice League sequels, as well as other projects like Ben Affleck's Batman movie – is still going strong online, though newly minted DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has shut down discussion of selling the universe to Netflix. "I have to say, this has got to be the wackiest hashtag ever since 1) Netflix hasn't expressed any such interest (although we've discussed other stuff) & 2) Zack hasn't expressed any interest & seems to be happy doing what he's doing (and, yes, we too have talked)," Gunn wrote on Twitter. 

Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran have also recently unveiled the first stage of their DC slate, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters – though less than half of Chapter One has been announced, according to Gunn. 

Snyder, meanwhile, has a lot on his plate with Netflix. Rebel Moon, inspired by an old Star Wars pitch, is coming to the streamer this December, while Army of the Dead 2 is also in the works.

The DCU has undergone a big shake-up since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the new heads of DC Studios. Under their plan for Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, they confirmed they're working on a new Superman: Legacy film set earlier during Clark Kent's life. Currently, no casting has been announced, but while Henry Cavill definitely won't be coming back, Man of Steel actor Dylan Sprayberry has told SFX that he'd love to return to the role. He played a teenage Kent in the 2013 film.

As he returns to Teen Wolf: The Movie, Sprayberry was quizzed on if he'd consider stepping back into the superhero genre in the latest issue of SFX, which features The Mandalorian season 3 on the cover. "I have thought a lot about it," he explains. "For me, I feel like I got to play one of the best superheroes in one of my favorite versions of a superhero movie ever. Man Of Steel was amazing. Henry Cavill, Zack Snyder and everyone involved did an amazing job. Michael Shannon was a great General Zod. I already got to work on what I consider to be the pinnacle of a superhero movie. 

"If it made sense to step back into playing a young Superman or a teenage Superman it could be very fun. And because I already did it, it would be very cool to continue the storyline, with me playing the character, and see how that went. I feel like I could do an excellent job."

The actor adds: "In terms of other roles, I always wanted to play Wolverine. That was one character that I always loved. If I had one of these characters that was my childhood fantasy to play, I would definitely do it. But I wouldn't just jump into a superhero movie off the bat because it's almost like I am holding out to play one of those really special characters that I love."

Sprayberry is best known as the brooding werewolf Liam on MTV's Teen Wolf. The TV series concluded its six-season run in 2017, but Sprayberry recently reprised his role for Teen Wolf: The Movie. "We obviously have things that aren't similar, but there is a lot of me in Liam that is very similar," he adds to SFX of returning to the character. "In a small way, it's like I am being appreciated for being close to who I really am. A lot of the emotion and characteristics of Liam are personal to me because they come from me meshing with the character. It feels nice that a lot of people resonated with the arc of Liam's struggle and growth throughout the seasons."

James Gunn had addressed the campaign to get the SnyderVerse on Netflix – and revealed that he's spoken to Zack Snyder about his plans for DC. 

"I have to say, this has got to be the wackiest hashtag ever since 1) Netflix hasn’t expressed any such interest (although we’ve discussed other stuff) & 2) Zack hasn’t expressed any interest & seems to be happy doing what he’s doing (and, yes, we too have talked)," Gunn tweeted in response to the hashtag "#SellTheSnyderVerseToNetflix".

He added: "[Snyder] contacted me to express his support about my choices. He’s a great guy. Again, he seems really happy with the massive world building he’s doing now."

This isn't the first Snyder-related campaign to take off online – the "#RestoreTheSnyderVerse" hashtag called for a continuation of Snyder's vision for the DC Extended Universe, which left off with the release of 2021's Zack Snyder's Justice League. The director envisioned three Justice League movies in total, but has since moved on to new projects at Netflix. His next movie, Rebel Moon, is set for release this December. 

Gunn recently announced his and co-CEO Peter Safran's plans for the next phase of DC movies and TV shows, titled DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. This includes a new Superman movie, a Batman and Robin movie (separate from Matt Reeves' take on the character starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne), and a Wonder Woman prequel TV show.

If you're confused about Henry Cavill as Superman, you're not the only one. After appearing in Black Adam and announcing his return as the Man of Steel, Cavill was then shuffled out of the role entirely, and a new Superman will be stepping up to the plate. 

The next Superman will be part of the new DCU, ushered in by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. This stage of the DCU is called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and, as part of it, an all-new Superman movie is on the way. 

Below, we've broken down exactly what happened with Cavill – from his reappearance in Black Adam, Man of Steel 2 speculation, and the new film in the works without Cavill's involvement. Up, up, and away…

Is Henry Cavill still Superman? 

The short answer: no. Despite making his long-awaited return in the Black Adam post-credits scene and announcing he was back in the role on Instagram, Henry Cavill is officially no longer Superman. 

"I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it's sad news, everyone," Cavill shared on Instagram. "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.

"For those who have been by my side for years... we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember... Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

Gunn has also denied firing Cavill. "We didn't fire Henry. Henry was never cast. He was in a cameo, and that was the end of his story," Gunn said (H/T Deadline). 

"A lot of people made assumptions which weren't true," he continued. "But for me, it's about who do I want to cast as Superman and who do the filmmakers want to cast."

He added: "For me, for this story, it isn't Henry. I like Henry. He's a great guy. I think he's gotten dicked around by a lot of people, including former regimes of this company. But this Superman isn't Henry for a number of reasons."

Who is the new Superman? What is the new Superman movie?

Gunn revealed that he was writing a new Superman movie, which would follow a younger version of Clark Kent: so Cavill would no longer play the role. 

The new film is titled Superman: Legacy and is set for release July 11, 2025. "This is really the start of the DCU," Safran said in a statement (via Deadline). "It's not an origins story, it focuses on Superman's balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He's the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, he's kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned." 

The film is said to focus on Clark as a reporter for the Daily Planet, and will feature characters such as Lois Lane. Casting for the role has not begun yet, Gunn confirmed. 

What happened with Henry Cavill and Black Adam? What was the plan?

Dwayne Johnson teased a Superman vs. Black Adam showdown in the run-up to Black Adam's release, and the first stepping stone towards that future was laid in the Black Adam post-credits scene. In the stinger, Cavill's Superman arrives to talk to Black Adam. The Kryptonian hero says it's "been a while since anyone made the world this nervous," of course referring to the stir he himself caused, and says "We should talk." Teth-Adam smirks, and the scene ends there. 

This marked the first time since 2017's Justice League (barring his appearance in the Snyder Cut) that Cavill played Superman.

At the time, Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia indicated that a battle between the two meta-humans wasn't the only thing planned. "It's never been about a one-off or just about a fight," Garcia told CinemaBlend. "No, it's about so much more than that. We really want to craft a long form of storytelling and show that these two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have to deal with each other often, either on the same or opposite sides."

That didn't mean a fight wouldn't have happened someday, though. "Hopefully they're going to clash at some point, but it's not just about a 'one fight' situation," he continued. "That was never our dream. That does not reward the fans. Fans want to feel a journey between these guys knowing that these guys exist in the same universe."

Johnson also hyped up a potential showdown. "We will create Black Adam for him to be the most powerful and unstoppable force on this planet," Johnson told Jake's Takes. "The most powerful and unstoppable force in the entire universe has been on the sidelines for too long." 

But, like Garcia, Johnson tempered expectations that the fight would be coming up right away. "That's definitely not the next step," the actor wrote on Twitter. "We have a lot more long term storytelling to do before that historic DCEU showdown and more new characters to establish."

Around the time of Black Adam's release, Cavill also took to Instagram to confirm his return to the role, and Man of Steel 2 was even reported to be in the works (more on that below).

Johnson also addressed the long journey to bringing Cavill back onscreen as Supes. "We fought for years to bring you back. They always said no," he wrote on Twitter. "But to [producers Dany and Hiram Garcia] & myself "no" was not an option. We can't build out our DCEU w/out the world's greatest superhero. And fans will always come first. Welcome home. I'll see you down the road." 

Hot on the heels of Black Adam, though, was the news that Gunn and Safran were taking over as co-CEOs of DC Studios. That put everything into doubt as it became clear that a major reboot was on the cards as the duo worked out a lengthy plan for the DCU. 

Undeterred, though, Cavill discussed the possibility of meeting with Gunn about the future. "I have not met James yet," Cavill told IGN. "I'm looking very forward to meeting him. He’s clearly a very, very talented man, and I cannot wait to sit down and have long, long conversations with him. I'm very excited about him being there and very excited about any future opportunities we can work together."

Not long after this, though, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter once again put Cavill's DC future into question, with a cameo in The Flash potentially on the cutting room floor. A few days later, it was made official: Cavill revealed he was no longer Superman following a conversation with Gunn and Safran. 

Black Adam 2 also isn't on the agenda anytime soon, so that promised showdown between Johnson and Cavill's characters will never happen. 

Was there going to be a Man of Steel 2?

Man of Steel 2 was reportedly in the works, but since Gunn and Safran's new plan overhauled the DC universe, the sequel will no longer be happening. 

Around the time of Black Adam's release, a report from The Hollywood Reporter said that Warner Bros. was very keen on getting Cavill back for another solo movie. 

The film "would essentially be Man of Steel 2" and had prolific DC producer Charles Roven attached, while the search was on for writers. 

"I'm not sure what's going on in that regard," Garcia told CinemaBlend when asked if Cavill signed up to play Superman again in more DC movies. "He wanted to come back, we wanted him to come back, and we wanted to make sure that we were able to establish that [his] character exists in the same universe as Black Adam. We have large ambitions for things we'd like to do, however all of these items are still in the works so I am unable to provide exact updates. But just know that we are fighting for it."

What other Superman projects are in the works?

There are three other Superman projects currently in the works. One is Gunn's film, while another is a movie set to be produced by J.J. Abrams and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. It will reportedly feature a Black Superman and THR describes it as having "a multidecade-spanning story." If the movie does happen, it will most likely take place in an alternative DC universe, similar to The Batman and Joker. 

The other Superman project is an HBO Max TV show from producer Michael B. Jordan, who may also play the main character. The show wouldn't focus on Clark Kent, but instead Val-Zod – he took up the mantle of Superman on an alternate Earth in the comics. There's been no official word on the series happening, and those Warner Bros. shakeups may have spelled doom for the series as the studio puts an emphasis on its big heroes appearing in cinemas.

Neither project appears on Gunn and Safran's current DC slate, but neither has been officially canceled, either.

Henry Cavill has officially confirmed his return as Superman. Now, be warned that the following will delve into Black Adam spoilers…

That's right, Cavill is back in the red cape. The actor took to Instagram to confirm the news with a post including a video and a picture of him suited up as the Man of Steel, accompanied by the caption: "A very small taste of what's to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded." 

"I wanted to make it official that I am back as Superman," Cavill says in the video, after explaining he held off addressing his return to give people a chance to watch Black Adam first. "And the image you see on this post and what you saw in Black Adam are just a very small taste of things to come. So there's a lot to be thankful for, and I'll get to that in time, but I wanted to thank you guys most of all. Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded." 

Cavill appears as Superman very briefly in the Black Adam post-credits scene, approaching DC's newest anti-hero and telling him, "We should talk." The movie ends before Black Adam replies, but Dwayne Johnson has been hyping up a potential Black Adam vs. Superman clash in the future, so watch this space. 

Warner Bros. is also reportedly keen on Cavill starring in another Superman solo movie, though the project is in the very early stages, and the actor doesn't seem to have officially signed on just yet. 

Before Black Adam, the last time Cavill played Superman was 2017's Justice League (barring his appearance in the Snyder Cut), and he first played the role way back in 2013's Man of Steel.

When does Black Adam take place on the DC timeline? It's a fair question, considering the DC universe is made up of canon and non-canon entries, meaning it all gets quite confusing very quickly. Have no fear, though, because we've got everything you need to know right here. 

Due to the nature of what we're talking about, we're diving deep into spoilers. So, here's your warning: the following contains major Black Adam spoilers, so turn back now if you haven't seen the movie yet! 

Black Adam on the DCEU timeline

To start with, let's discount all the non-DCEU DC movies that have been released. The Batman, Joker, Zack Snyder's Justice League, and DC League of SuperPets should all be considered in their own, separate universes, unconnected to the main run of movies.

As for Black Adam's place in the chronology, that can be pinned down by references to other DC movies. For one thing, young Amon Tomaz has a room chock full of DC memorabilia, including Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg. That means Black Adam has to take place after these heroes make themselves known to the world – Superman started it all in Man of Steel, while the rest of the heroes must become properly known to the public after Justice League. 

Plus, that Black Adam post-credits scene is another huge giveaway. Superman himself shows up, so Black Adam must be set post-resurrection, following the hero's death in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Superman comes back to life in Justice League. 

Black Adam also definitely takes place after The Suicide Squad, as revealed by Amanda Waller and Emilia Harcourt's appearances, and Teth-Adam even spends some time in suspended animation at a Task Force X black site. This would also place the movie after Aquaman, Shazam, Birds of Prey, and probably Peacemaker. 

As for a specific year, James Gunn told Screen Rant that The Suicide Squad "takes place in the year it comes out," which is 2021, so we can assume Black Adam is set either in 2021 or 2022. That makes Black Adam the most recent DC movie on the timeline, then.

A Suicide Squad fan has seen the Ayer Cut – and they have shared their reaction online. For the uninitiated, the Ayer Cut is director David Ayer's version of the 2016 Suicide Squad (not to be confused with James Gunn's The Suicide Squad), similar to the Snyder Cut of Justice League. 

"I had the honour of being shown 'The Cut' by [David Ayer] No bs. 2hrs 23m of incredible! A totally different story! Forget the theatrical. This movie has a deeper message," the lucky viewer posted to Twitter. If you're in doubt, Ayer himself confirmed the fan has seen the film. 

"I cannot give specific character arc details for obvs reasons. Just be assured [David Ayer's] 'mature cut' has deeper character arcs. The film totally different edit / order. A Superior story/film. [Cara Delevingne] was Great!! So much more character, we were denied," they added. 

Plus, according to the viewer, Jared Leto's Joker "stole the show" and Ben Affleck's Batman had "longer scenes." Ayer has said before that his original version of the movie had "terrifying" Joker scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. It also turns out that the Ayer Cut apparently doesn't include a scene featuring Ezra Miller's Flash arresting Jai Courtney's Boomerang.

The fan also reported back on how finished the alternate version of the movie actually is: "The edit is complete in terms of timeline, sound etc . But, I would say there's a bit of polishing required on some scenes particularly the last act – effects wise."

If all this has whetted your appetite to actually see the Ayer Cut, the good news is the fan answered a question on how likely a release is with, "''There is hope.'" 

No sequel has been announced for Gunn's The Suicide Squad, but spin-off Peacemaker is getting a season 2. Next up on the DC release slate is Black Adam, which touches down in theaters this October 21. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming superhero movies flying your way. 

A Black Adam trailer has been re-released to remove footage from the 2017 version of Justice League. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson shared the new version of the trailer himself, with footage from his film replacing the blink-and-you'll-miss-it clip from the theatrical Justice League. 

The trailer opens with clips from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Aquaman, and Birds of Prey, but the original version also included a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment of villain Steppenwolf striking the ground with his ax. This particular clip is taken from the 2017 version of the movie – in Zack Snyder's Justice League, the scene instead sees the villain Darkseid hitting the ground. You can see the original trailer below. 

Johnson re-shared the trailer, now missing the Steppenwolf clip, with the caption: "Corrected Long before the world of heroes and villans, #BlackAdam ruled it all. A god with zero mercy and power born from rage. The #ManInBlack hits theaters worldwide… ONE MONTH FROM TODAY. OCTOBER 21" 

The canon version of Justice League remains the 2017 theatrical release, so it's unlikely that Black Adam will pick up on anything from the Snyder Cut. Black Adam stars Johnson as the titular character, an anti-hero who, released from millennia of imprisonment, encounters the Justice Society of America. Pierce Brosnan, Viola Davis, Sarah Shahi, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell, and Noah Centineo co-star.
