Four players got the best news possible in the launch MLB The Show 23 player ratings. Shohei Ohtani, Jacob deGrom, Mike Trout and Aaron Judge all begin the new baseball season in the 99 Club, meaning they have the highest possible overall score in this year's game. But this would be a short piece if we only included that quality quartet. Instead, we're about to steer you through the top five players at every position, in your MLB The Show 23 player ratings guide.

Jacob deGrom was the only starting pitcher to score a maximum 99 OVR last year – but this time around he’s joined by Angels ace Ohtani. Verlander is the lone newcomer to the top five, which bids farewell to Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers, 91) and Chris Sale (Boston Red Sox, 86).

After clocking up 42 saves with a phenomenal 1.36 ERA in 2022, Clese nabs top spot among pitchers called upon to finish games. He’s just as dominating in The Show as real life, with 99 Arm, 99 Velocity, 97 Breaking Ball, and 86 Control. Note that he also has the Night Player quirk - making him even more reliable after dark!

JR Realmuto tops the charts behind the plate, knocking Yasmani Grandal (Chicago White Sox, 74) out of the top five completely. Alejandro Kirk, meanwhile, is a newcomer to the elite list after a 2022 season in which he hit .285 with 14 home runs, and 63 RBI. That was enough for the glove man to earn a first All-Star appearance.

What a monster boost for Cardinals cruncher Goldschmidt. He was rated 89 last year, but surges all the way up to 96 – and soars to the crest of the first base category. Guerrero topped the pile last year, but has to make do with sharing third spot this time around.

Even at 32, Jose Altuve remains the best second baseman in the league – batting .300 across 141 games in 2022, with 28 walks and 57 RBI. He’s an incredibly fun player to deploy in The Show. Highlights include 95 Contact against left handers, 88 Batting Clutch, and the Unfazed quirk – so he excels when hitting with two strikes.

Manny Machado and Nolan Arenado took first team and second team honors at third base in the 2022 All-Star team – so it’s little surprise to see the MLB The Show 23 ratings stay consistent with that order. Machado’s sole weak points are 39 speed and 26 stealing – but you shouldn’t have to worry about those when he’s clouting homers into Row M.

Two years after appearing on the cover of MLB The Show 21, and one year after scoring a 94 rating, Fernando Tatis is no longer available in the game at all. That’s because he was suspended for 80 games last year after testing positive for an anabolic steroid. No word yet on whether he’ll return to The Show at some point in 2023.

MLB The Show splits outfielders into three categories – LF, CF, and RF – so we’ve turned this into a top ten, rather than a fab five. Trout once again maintains his bombastic 99 overall rating, where he’s matched by Aaron Judge this year. Ronald Acuna Jr also notched the big nine-nine in The Show 22, but spirals down to a 92 score this time out. Wondering where all the left fielders other than Yordan Alvarez are? Arizona slugger Lourdes Gurriel Jr ranks second on that list, with an OVR of 87.

The Astro A30 Wireless gaming headset is another set aiming to be that one-stop solution; that do-it-all headset for all platforms and all uses. It's a noble pursuit and one that could plug a lot of gaps, serving gamers exceptionally well.

If the A30 Wireless nails it, even with a price tag of $250/£230, it really could be a top set - and that's before we even get to factoring in that awesome Astro gaming audio pedigree. After spending a few weeks with the headset - and I'd have liked to have revealed this sooner - the signs are great. This really could be one of the very best gaming headsets of the whole year, and certainly one of the best wireless gaming headsets money can buy.

Design & Features

It's immediately apparent that the Astro A30 Wireless has all kinds of scenarios in mind when looking at its design and build - and also a change of aesthetic from previous styles. Gone is the spiky, hard-edge, rectilinear, and gamer-y aesthetic of the likes of the Astro A50 and others that came before. Now there are curved and softened corners that edge the headset toward a headphone feel. Don't get me wrong, this is still very much an Astro device, but the change in approach to the aesthetic is welcome. Available in white or navy blue, the A30 is attractive in both and wouldn't look out of place on your head while you're on a train, sitting at your PC, or while you're slouching on the sofa. And you could wear the A30 effortlessly for hours in each of those settings; the design is robust and sturdy while also being relatively lightweight, and very comfortable.

Onboard controls are pretty much as they should be but housed slightly differently. The 'more normal' stuff is covered simply: the power button is on the back at the top of the right cup, the Bluetooth button below that, and the mic mute button is on the rear of the left cup. Then things get 'unique'. The rest of the controls are built into a joystick on the bottom of the right cup. This is largely a success, squishing in volume up/down, game/chat audio balance into the directions of the joystick, and the button press of the same feature then acts as a controller for music and calls when the Bluetooth connection is engaged. This is all neat and tidy and works very well indeed.

There are also two mics on board - or rather two mic setups; a detachable boom mic for play, and integrated mics for calls. This is excellent flexibility and enhances the versatility and flexibility that the headset offers.

Elsewhere, the plates on the side of each cup are removable, being attached by magnets. These don't open up to offer an ingenious battery solution like the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro does, admittedly, but that does cost a fair bit more. No, these plates are more so that you can customise the look of your A30 and personalise it. A nice touch.

Performance

Astro has always given us some of the best gaming audio going, but is that lost in the A30 Wireless as it attempts to be a do-it-all headset? No. Very much no.

That rich gaming audio is front and centre of the headset's performance, and it really can turn its hand to all the platforms it's compatible with too.

I tested the headset (sold and packaged as a PC and PS5 headset, but the A30 can just be used with anything) across both of these platforms. On PC, Red Dead 2's environments were as beautiful as I'd ever 'heard' it, from bird sounds to rivers, to distant old-fashioned gunfire. Meanwhile, the dialogue and barking of units that appeared in games like Total War: Troy, and Dawn of War III were crisp and clear above any other cacophonies. 

A Plague Tale: Requiem was a particular highlight on PS5 too, with each rat squeak seemingly given its own audio profile, while the creaks of wood and trees, Amicia's heavy and panicked breathing, and the snap of her sling were all incredible. Rainbow Six: Extraction was also a joy with the A30 balancing comms and game audio beautifully. There was never a time that my voice didn't carry without flaw to my teammates (the boom mic is rich and clear), nor a time when I couldn't be prepared for enemies' locations and movements given the detailed audio cues. 

I made a custom EQ profile for Extraction via the Logitech G app, which enhanced the A30's performance even further. As a result of that, I will say that using the app is the best way to get the most out of your A30. Even away from EQ profiles to mess about with, it's vital to change things like the side tone that was on by default (that was annoying me; nobody wants to hear their own voice like that). And to be clear, it is only the app - there is no Astro Command Centre.

The options in the Logitech G mobile app to change EQ are actually quite good, by the way. They are simple - only featuring five sliders - but you can recreate settings you may have used in the command center and still implement your required changes easily. And then it's equally easy to flick between profiles if you change game or media.

A supreme level of performance, overall, then, and one most befitting of the Astro name, no matter what you use it for or where you wear it - even taking the headset out on dog walks is a joy as music is blasted richly and beautifully into your ears. However, I will say one small drawback is that the built-in mics are only OK; good enough for calls and meetings at home, but maybe not much more (which is fine though - built-in mics can never truly compare to boom mics).

In terms of use, the sounds and beeps do take some getting used to, but the joystick largely holds up as a great way to combine controls. It's intuitive and easy to use with your thumb or finger.

Should you buy the Astro A30 Wireless?

I really, really like the Astro A30 - as you may have guessed. It excels in every way, and the audio across all media is as good as it gets. Going wireless and also chucking in incredible functionality and versatility? Exquisite. The design is chic and cool, the build is robust, the customisation options are a nice bonus, and the companion app is genuinely useful. It's basically a full house.

One tiny eyebrow-raiser for me, as an aside more than anything, is that, in practice, it's actually a bit difficult to pin down exactly which platform this headset is most at home with. It just excels with all of them. For example, the switch away from the Astro Command Center software means it 'loses' a USP as a PC gaming headset somewhat - but not its performance or pedigree on PC, of course. The flip side of it having no 'home platform' is that it can just be an 'any platform' headset - and that is just great.

When I reviewed the Razer Barracuda Pro I really thought I'd found the one wireless headset, across platforms, to recommend to folks easily. However, the Astro A30 Wireless has taken that mantle, and comfortably so. It's also cheaper than the Barracuda Pro. It's simply the best all-round wireless gaming headset I've reviewed in 2022 - probably ever - and is an absolutely tremendous headset that does it all.

How we tested the Astro A30 Wireless

The Astro A30 Wireless was my everyday headset for play and for work for the best part of a few weeks.

On PlayStation 5, I tested the headset with regular sessions of Middle Earth: Shadow of War and A Plague Tale: Requiem, while I also used it for many hours of Rainbow Six: Extraction. These gave me a range of audio profiles and game types to experience, as well as ensure I could put the microphone to the test, garnering my friends feedback in the process. On PC< I gave the headset a whirl in strategy games like Total War: Troy, futuristic action-y games like Dawn of War III, and also a bit of Red Dead 2 and Apex Legends.

Away from games, I used the A30 for some meetings at work, and to listen to background music while I wrote and edited. I also tested the Bluetooth functionality and both mics for taking calls.

How much storage does the PS5 have? How much memory is on its hard drive? The Sony PlayStation 5 has a powerful SSD used to run games at a far superior rate to previous generations, but that's no guarantee of size, only the speed at which data can be processed over the more conventional and pedestrian HDD. 

Basically, it means that players can expect 825GB of memory on that SSD, but that might be as much as you think. Part of that has to be taken up with the PS5's operating system, and these days games are getting bigger and bigger too. 825GB is definitely a lot - but is it as much as you'd think? Either way, it means that it's not the full picture of the available PS5 storage space. So here's everything you need to know about how much storage the PS5 has.

How much storage does PS5 have?

Although the PS5 storage is advertised as having an 825GB SSD drive, that doesn't directly translate into usable space. To start with, due to a quirk of how hard drive space is measured that 825GB size refers to 825,000,000,000 bytes, and as there's actually 1,024 bytes in 1KB etc all the way up this means there's only 768GB of storage space initially. Take away some more space to cover the essential operating system and you're left with 667.2GB of usable PS5 storage space, to cover your games and apps, media gallery, saved data, and other system data for your games and apps.

However, while that might not sound like much if you've come off the back of a 1TB PS4, let's gather up a few games that show off the PlayStation 5 and see how many games you can fit on the PS5 hard drive (bearing in mind this may not take into account future update sizes):

You can see how much PS5 storage space you have available by going through Settings > Storage > Console Storage, and by selecting Games and Apps you can see how much space individual games are taking up. If you need to free up more storage then your Media Gallery is a good place to start, especially as the PS5 is initially set up to record a video every time you earn a trophy – you can turn this feature off by going through Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Trophies > Save Trophy Videos.

Ideally you should also be storing any PS4 games you're using on an external HDD, to free up space on your PS5 internal SSD for the games that need it. Time travel is having something of a moment in current superhero media, and that's not just because Avengers: Endgame used time travel as a key plot device. But none of that would be possible without the help of the best time-travelling superheroes of all time.

So what better time than now to look at the best time-travelling superheroes ever?

10. Waverider

The almost-forgotten hero from the alternate timeline of DC Comics' 1991 event Armageddon 2001, Matthew Ryder escaped a dystopian dictator and certain death by traveling into the past with the ability to "read" potential futures of people just by touching them.

Unfortunately, while he prevented his future from happening, he did so by accidentally causing the creation of his dictator nemesis a decade early, setting in motion events that led to the Zero Hour crossover years later.

In recent years, Waverider has returned in spirit as the namesake of Rip Hunter's time ship in DC's Legends of Tomorrow - a unique live-action transition, to say the least.

9. Iron Lad

The Young Avengers' first leader sought to balance the scales for things that he'd do later in life - time travel can get weird, when it comes to cause and effect, remember - by adopting the guise of Iron Lad before he grew up to become the villainous Kang the Conqueror.

As Iron Lad, he managed to lead the team's short-lived first incarnation before fate - or the time-traveling equivalent - asserted itself, taking him to his destiny as one of the Avengers' most famous, and most deadly, foes. His career may not have been the longest, but his aim was true…

8. Deathlok

The original Deathlok was Luther Manning, a man from the post-apocalyptic future world of 1990 - well, he was created in 1974 — who traveled back to the present to find himself teaming up with the Thing and Nick Fury (after earlier clashes, of course) to try and undo the world from which he came.

Since most of us will recall that 1990 was not the year society collapsed into dystopian ruin, we'll have to assume he succeeded.

Good job Deathlok!

7. Guardians of the Galaxy

No, not the current team, but the original 1969 lineup which decided to try and save the world of the 31st century by travelling back to our time and recruiting some more heroes to the cause.

Along the way, they had numerous chances to accidentally screw up things, but always managed to avoid it - even when that meant avoiding spilling the beans to Vance Astrovik, the future New Warrior known as Justice, that one of their members was… Well, an alternate version of himself. All that and they defeated the Badoon invasion that was the reason behind their formation.

Members of this version of the team even appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with writer/director James Gunn pointing to the potential of future film stories featuring the characters.

6. Bishop

One of the two most time-travel-y X-Men, Lucas Bishop didn't really intend to be a time traveler; instead, it was more a matter of doing his job as one of the XSE (Xavier's Security Enforcers) and following a bad guy through a time portal.

Like Rachel Summers, he watched as the future he'd arrived from became more and more likely, but unlike Rachel, he decided to do something about it… Namely, try and kill Hope, even if that meant traveling through time again and hunting down Cable to make sure it happened (actions that got him on our time-traveling villains list, as well). He failed, of course, and realigned himself with the X-Men once again.

5. Green Lantern

What's that? You don't tend to think of Green Lantern as a time-traveler? Clearly, you've never heard of Pol Manning, Earth's Greatest Hero in the year 5700 — better known, perhaps, as Hal Jordan. The surreal existence of Manning is one of the stranger pieces of Green Lantern lore: When in need of a hero to save the world, the governments of the Earth of 5700 would simply kidnap Jordan from his own time, wipe his memory and give him the temporary (fictional) identity of Manning before returning him to his rightful time, place and mindset.

Sure, Jordan may not have been in control of - or even fully aware of - his time traveling double life, but that doesn't mean that he didn't serve as a Time Cop as well as a Space Cop when the situation demanded it.

4. The Flash

With the creation of the wonderfully-named Cosmic Treadmill, The Flash mythos gained a whole new dimension as the speedy superhero was suddenly given the ability to travel through time, meaning that his adventures could take place any when as well as any where.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before this ability would end up being exploited in the wrong way, leading to a butterfly effect mix up that created Flashpoint and the New 52, but for that brief period before everything went wrong, the Flash could be relied upon to clean up messes all through time.

Time travel has even played a significant role as a plot element in CW's The Flash too.

3. Superboy

For a teen who'd grow up to become the world's greatest superhero, it's almost disappointing to discover that it took three time-traveling teens from the 30th (later, 31st) century to introduce Clark Kent to the mysteries of the timestream.

Once the Legion of Super-Heroes entered his life, Superboy became a regular passenger on the cross-time express, either by Time Bubble or under his own steam but somehow always managing to stay away from any knowledge of his future self's actions, which may end up being his most impressive feat, considering just what Superman ended up accomplishing during his long career.

Now, the current Superboy, Jon Kent, looks to be the latest inheritor of the mantle to adventure alongside the Legion of Super-Heroes.

2. Cable

To try and get into the reasoning behind Cable and his various time-travel escapades would be both exhausting and confusing, so let's just leave it at this: At no point during his entire decades-long career as the X-Men family's favorite techno-organic enforcer has he managed to entirely undo the time stream by needlessly slaughtering another superhero, even with the amount of heavy artillery he carries around at all times.

Cable was played by Josh Brolin in Deadpool 2, a movie that hinged on his time-traveling nature (and provided the fuel for an all-time-classic mid-credits stinger scene).

1. Booster Gold

Perhaps comic books' top time-traveling superhero, Booster Gold may have started off his superheroic career with one simple time jump, but since then, he's teamed with Rip Hunter - who may or may not have been Booster's son - to protect the timestream from unwanted changes, only to fall victim to the rewriting of all DCU history via the New 52, where he's traveled into the past to meet Jonah Hex, and later went back to the future as part of Justice League 3001.

Booster recently returned to the DC Universe as part of Heroes In Crisis - another story in which time travel played a role. He'll next appear in the era-spanning Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium this September.

It might be dangerous, but is time travel one of the most useful super powers?

A group of Californian kids set off on a quest to investigate why a mysterious map keeps popping up on their mobile phones, only to discover that the cause is a wee tiny alien who’s crash-landed in the desert. They soon make friends with the CGI critter, but naturally the government are a bit perturbed about the new arrival and start mercilessly hunting it down…

Earth To Echo ’s a sweet, well-meaning adventure with a good heart, but the plot’s so familiar you almost expect alien Echo to ask to “phone home” at any moment. The cast of unknowns (including teenage American X-Factor finalist Brian ‘Astro’ Bradley) are charismatic enough, though, and the glitzy FX are surprisingly impressive.
