Mark Hamill clarifies his 'fundamental disagreements' with Star Wars: The Last Jedi director

Last month, Mark Hamill made some… let's say "worrying" comments about Star Wars: The Last Jedi. "I at one point had to say to Rian, 'I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character," he told Vanity Fair. He followed that up by saying that once he'd gotten that grievance off his chest, it was his job to help Johnson realize his vision. But Hamill says now that he could've phrased his story better.

Speaking to Variety on the red carpet of the Tony Awards, Hamill clarified his earlier statements. "I got into trouble because I was quoted as saying to Rian that 'I fundamentally disagree with everything you decided about Luke,' and it was inartfully phrased," Hamill said. "What I was, was surprised at how he saw Luke. And it took me awhile to get around to his way of thinking, but once I was there it was a thrilling experience. I hope it will be for the audience too."

It's still a bit surprising, and is more evidence that The Last Jedi will take Star Wars in a new direction, but at least it doesn't sound like there was as much tension as Hamill's initial quote might've implied.

Hamill's got other ideas though, and you can read how he thought The Force Awakens should've ended as well as see his reaction when he's reunited with the very lightsaber he used in the original films.
