Sub Quest 1 – Thief and Merchant Asterisk

Availability: Chapter 1

Once you've arrived in the city of Ancheim and had your audience with the King, head to the easternmost part of town and into the mansion of one Chairman Profiteur. After you’ve spoken to him, have a chat with the man lurking outside the mansion before leaving town. Take a quick detour to the Oasis at the west of Ancheim to prompt an event, then onwards in the same direction to Harena Ruins (the spooky looking cave near the westernmost shore).

Fight your way through the dungeon to the hidden lair and a battle with Jackal the Thief and Spell Fencer Ciggma Khint (the latter’s asterisk isn’t available at this time). The traps in this dungeon will blind your party if you get caught in the clouds of noxious looking fumes that the statues spew out, so either time your movements carefully or make sure someone has the Dungeon Master support ability enabled. You won’t be stealing anything other than asterisks in this encounter, but the good news is that once you’ve defeated the Jackal, you’ll become a regular tea leaf!

Ciggma Khint will use his Sword Magic ability to cast silence on members of your party, so if you’re planning on bringing any Mages to the party, either equip them to resist silence or stock up on echo herbs. The Jackal will use steal to lighten the load of potions your party is carrying, but have everyone target Khint first and once he’s out of the fight, take care of the Jackal.

After you’ve put down the Jackal, head back to the mansion in Ancheim for a confrontation with Chairman Profiteur and Ciggma Khint and rejoice! For now you can start pilfering away to your heart’s content.

As in the last battle, get rid of Khint first and beware of his casting silence on your Mages. The rodent faced Merchant on the other hand is armed with fistfuls of solid gold coins that he’ll pelt you with at full force in his Takeover attack, shearing off 300HP with each hit. If you haven’t invested much time in levelling up, this onslaught can be quite lethal as he likes to deal out a double attack after Defaulting, so a white Mage and a good deal of potions and phoenix downs make a worthy substitute for grinding.
