Having launched earlier this month, it may strike you as odd that the PlayStation Classic is already seeing discounts and gift card bundles at a number of different stores, both online and off. Walmart in particular is selling the throwback mini console for $99.99 - the manufacturer's suggested retail price - and including a $25 gift card in the package.
Sony PlayStation Classic for $99.99 w/ $25 gift card at Walmart
While it's a tough sell at full price, the Sony PlayStation Classic is infinitely more enticing when you throw in the incentive of a bundled $25 gift card. And that's exactly what Walmart has done here.View Deal
Being the holiday season that it is, one reason for the seemingly premature savings on Sony's latest game system is that Walmart is trying to clear out stock in time for the new year. That said, the reason it still has stock to begin with probably has something to do with the PlayStation Classic's somewhat limited suite of games.
When you think back to the original PlayStation library, Battle Arena Toshinden and Jumping Flash likely aren't the first games that come to mind. Although the PlayStation Classic does ship with some noteworthy gems pre-installed, such as Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7, it leaves a lot to be desired as a whole. Like, where the hell are Crash and Spyro? And what, no Tomb Raider or Gran Turismo?
It's not all bad, though. A few of our favorites, like Twisted Metal, Tekken 3, and Metal Gear Solid are all in place. Seeing as you should only buy the PlayStation Classic if you like at least some of the games it comes with out of the box, it helps that around half the enclosed 20 games are actual classics.
At $99.99 with a $25 Walmart gift card in tow, we're less on the side of caution than we were earlier in the month to recommend Sony's take on a nostalgia box this holiday. Even if we're bound to see lower prices on this machine after Christmas, this may be your last chance to fetch a PlayStation Classic for yourself or a loved one before December 25. Time's a-ticking after all.
