Check out the Rey and BB-8 animated short that fills in a Star Wars: The Force Awakens gap

Rey and BB-8’s trek across Jakku was one of the early highlights of Star Wars: The Force Awakens - and it could have been even better. Disney’s new Star Wars: Forces of Destiny animation short fills in parts of the pair’s perilous journey.

The episode, titled Sands of Jakku, may not have top-tier animation, but it’s a neat little romp. And, hey, Daisy Ridley even returns to voice Rey, which is nice.

Things take a turn for the worst though when a Nightwatcher Worm tracks down the droid – it’s got a taste for junk, you see – and Rey has to do her level best to stop BB-8 turning into worm food.

What follows is a taster of Rey’s Force potential – either that or she’s a ridiculously good shot with her staff – as she does battle with the worm to keep its jaws from slobbering all over BB-8.

All in all, it’s a cool interlude to something that was somewhat skipped over in the movie… assuming it’s canon. Who knows with Lucasfilm these days?
