New DCU movie Supergirl has officially finished its worldwide theatrical run, and its total gross is the lowest for any DC movie in decades.

Supergirl has ended its global theatrical run at $125.8 million worldwide, as per Box Office Mojo. That's over $45 million lower than 2022 DC flop Morbius, which earned $167 million, and $83 million less than Joker 2.

In fact, Supergirl marks the lowest box office return for any DC movie since Catwoman in 2004, which earned $82 million. But that was over 20 years ago, so considering inflation, Supergirl fared far worse.

This isn't a huge surprise, as Supergirl has struggled on screen from the very start. The movie opened to $37.1 million in the US and just over $62 million globally. But the Woman of Tomorrow adaptation failed to grow from that point on, seeing massive dips week by week. In the end, Supergirl only managed to scrape in total what last year's Superman made on opening weekend alone last year.

The movie marks a financial loss for DC Studios, as it cost around $170 million to make and perhaps tens of millions more to market. Worse yet, Supergirl is only the second movie in James Gunn's new DCU, following last year's Superman, which made more during its first weekend on screen than Supergirl did in its entire run. Superman went on to gross over $618 million worldwide.

It is not clear why the movie flopped so hard. Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Supergirl follows the titular hero as she puts her partying days behind her to help a new friend seek revenge on the same villain responsible for harming her dog, Krypto. The movie opened to mixed reviews and a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not so bad when compared to Morbius' 15% score.

However, in June, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran told The New York Times that although Supergirl's opening was disappointing, the team remains "confident" in their overall strategy. DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters continues this year both on the small screen with Lanterns this August, and on the big screen with Clayface this October.

Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton has doubled down on his previous comments about the state of the industry regarding Shang-Chi 2's very delayed status.

“When you really look at what happened to the industry, at least from my perspective, it was just like everything went to shit after that," Cretton told TheWrap. "I feel like if Marvel was where it was before, we would have had maybe two sequels already. Who knows?"

Cretton previously told Deadline's Crew Call Podcast that a sequel to the beloved 2021 film was still on the way, but that it's the post-pandemic nature of the industry that has put something of a blocker on it. Cretton himself has also been a bit busy directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is already breaking some box office records.

The film stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, a martial arts master who is forced to confront the past he thought he left behind when he becomes involved with the mysterious Ten Rings organization. It's also worth noting that Shang-Chi hasn't appeared in any other movies or in a Disney Plus series, which made fans pretty worried about the sequel's fate until it was announced that Shang-Chi would star in Avengers: Doomsday. He can also be seen facing off with Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler in the trailer.

As Marvel superheroes go, Spider-Man has suffered a lot more than most. Aside from losing Tony Stark and Aunt May in the MCU, the death of Uncle Ben is often the catalyst that's used to kickstart Peter Parker's entire hero's journey. But through it all, Spider-Man has always remained true to himself, unwaveringly optimistic in the face of loss.

That's his whole schtick really, this resilience that helps carry Spidey through his darkest moments. But Spider-Man: Brand New Day pushes the limits of that more than ever before, not through the death of another loved one but because of an even crueller twist that our hero might never recover from.

At the end of the previous film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange made everyone forget who Peter Parker is. This spell was needed to help save the day, but that hasn't made it any easier for Peter, who's been forced to live the last four years in solitude.

By the time Brand New Day begins, MJ has moved on with a new boyfriend, still unable to remember that Peter was once the love of her life. Peter remembers, though, haunted by the knowledge that they can never be together again. Or can they?

When Jean Grey discovers Spider-Man's true identity, she threatens to take control of MJ's mind and use her against him, as she has so many other people already. Terrified for MJ's safety, Peter races across town and whisks her away somewhere safe.

Once it seems like the coast is clear, the pair discuss what's going on. Spider-Man tries to explain why MJ is being targeted without giving away who he really is, but talk inevitably turns to their history together. It's as if MJ is on the cusp of remembering, something Peter and we feel when she pulls up the bottom of his mask to take a closer look at him.

In a scene reminiscent of that iconic upside-down snog from 2002's Spider-Man, the pair smooch and embrace. True love's kiss seems to have broken the spell at last and Peter couldn't be happier. That is, until MJ starts describing herself in the third person as they embrace…

Web of deceit

Yep, it turns out Jean has been controlling MJ this entire time just to mess with him, even going so far as to kiss him knowing how much it will hurt.

It's one thing to possess the woman Peter loves, but it's another thing entirely to trick him in such a way. Realising that MJ doesn't remember him after all, that he's no better off than he was four years ago when the spell was first cast, is devastating for Peter in ways Marvel rarely attempts. And to top it all off, Jean then rubs salt in the wound by revealing Peter is never in MJ's thoughts at all.

The scene ends with Jean forcing MJ to jump off the roof, but it's the deceit that hurts most. Spider-Man was always going to catch her in time, but the impact of this cruel twist can't be undone in quite the same way.

During a brief moment of respite, MJ later finds a letter that Peter wrote but never gave to her, one which explains the spell's impact in full and his undying love for her. She quickly confronts him, upset that he didn't give the letter to her himself years earlier.

Peter explains that he was only trying to protect MJ before going on to admit that he still loves her, that she's still everything to him and always will be. But MJ is unable to say any of this back to Peter. She understands why the girl in the letter loved him so much, but she is no longer that girl.

"I don’t love you," says MJ, adding, "I don't even know you."

What Jean did earlier was incredibly sadistic, but the words that come out of MJ's mouth now are even more gut-wrenching – and that's because they're actually true. She really doesn't love him anymore. Sure, the spell's to blame, but the impact is very much the same. Peter is heartbroken beyond measure, experiencing a new kind of loss that tears him apart at the seams.

Poetry in emotion

Both of these scenes hit incredibly hard for us too. After watching this pair fall for each other these past nine years, seeing MJ reject Peter like this is really tough to see. Any breakup would be bad enough, but this is even worse because of how unfair it feels. They should be together, yet they can't be, all because Peter had to make a sacrifice for the greater good.

Such emotional storytelling is still a rarity in the MCU. Some moments have hit hard, of course, but most of them usually revolve around the concept of death. Yondu's funeral, Vision's love persevering, Spidey's own "death" at the end of Avengers: Infinity War… Death is par for the course when it comes to superheroes who risk their lives every day, so these recurring themes are to be expected. What isn't expected is just how gut-wrenching this film's emotional beats are with nary a death in sight.

The circumstances might be fantastical, but the feelings involved are rooted in feelings of loss and rejection that anyone watching can relate to. It helps that Tom Holland has never been better as Spider-Man than he is in these moments, and Zendaya continues to be pitch-perfect too in her delivery, firm in her feeling with a hint of melancholy that comes with knowing the pain her words will cause.

Loss and how Peter keeps fighting despite it remains the driving force, but in unexpected ways that avoid recycling past stories in favour of something new. More than Aunt May's death, more even than Peter saying goodbye to MJ at the end of No Way Home, it's in the pain of these evolving relationship dynamics where Brand New Day sets itself apart as Spidey's most mature MCU outing yet.

What remains to be seen is whether Peter can weather the storm long enough for MJ to return to him. The end of the film hints that this might be possible, especially when we see her holding the same necklace Peter gifted her in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Still, true love might not be enough to break the spell, especially with Doomsday and Secret Wars looming on the horizon.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has arrived, and maybe you're being completely and totally normal about it. Or, maybe you're like me, and the potential storylines that could come next for Spider-Man 5 and beyond are keeping you up at night à la the Charlie Day red-string meme from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Because Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up the pieces from No Way Home quite nicely and also leaves several open paths for what could happen next to Tom Holland's Spider-Man, I've dusted off my comic book collection and put together a list of potential plot theories for Spidey's future in the MCU. Some are a little far-fetched, and others make a whole lot of sense (to me, anyway). From Peter teaming up with another Spider-Man, who isn't Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, to what could happen in Jake Schrier's upcoming X-Men movie... I've speculated about it all below.

Ned Leeds becomes the Hobgoblin

Hear me out: this is set up in Spider-Man: No Way Home as a potential future storyline, and then made all the more valid following Ned's graduation from MIT in Brand New Day.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tobey Maguire's Peter 2 tells Ned that his best friend died in his arms after trying to kill him. This is in reference to the events of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, which saw Peter's best friend Harry Osborn decide to avenge his father's death and become the second iteration of the Green Goblin (to which Andrew Garfield's Peter 3 nods, as a similar storyline followed in The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Ned then looks at Tom Holland's Peter and promises that he will never, ever, turn into a villain and try to kill his best friend.

Two things to note here: 1) After Doctor Strange's spell, Peter isn't Ned's best friend anymore, and 2) in the comics, Ned Leeds is revealed to be the Hobgoblin, a wannabe Green Goblin who manages to get his hands on Norman Osborn's Goblin Formula and tech with the intention of killing Spider-Man.

Would there need to be a Norman Osborn or Oscorp on Earth-616 to make this work? Well, the big evil tech corporation job that MJ turned down in Brand New Day sure did sound a bit like Oscorp... so there is that possibility. But no, we wouldn't necessarily need existing Goblin tech for Ned to become the Hobgoblin, because he's smart enough to develop the tech himself. The Spidey Tracker that Ned invents is next-level surveillance tech that is even able to track Spidey on another planet. That alone tells me that ol' Ned could whip up some seriously scary technology with the right (or wrong) resources.

Miles Morales is the Spider-Man tracked "off-planet"

In that brief post-credits scene, we see a close-up of Ned's Spidey Tracker. The tracker shows Spidey on a planet that goes far beyond the moon of Earth-616, and registers his status as "off-planet." There are two reasons why I think this could very well be Miles Morales, and, once again, the first occurs in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Towards the end of No Way Home, Electro (Jamie Foxx) finally sees the Spidey from his universe, Andrew Garfield, unmasked. In a sweet and funny moment, Electro says, "You're from Queens, you got that suit, you help poor people... I just thought you was gonna be black." Garfield's Spidey immediately apologizes, to which Electro says, "There's gotta be a black Spider-Man out there somewhere." Because this is the movie that cracked open the multiverse, this scene alone meant a live-action Miles movie was absolutely possible.

The second reason is the simple fact that Kevin Feige recently confirmed that they were working on a live-action Miles Morales movie.

It's also possible that this interplanetary Spider-Man could be Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield (though Garfield laughed and said he had absolutely no idea when asked about this by ScreenRant). It could also, perhaps, be the planet Battleworld... which is where all the heroes of Earth-616 are sent to fight to the death by the Beyonder, and is the central location of the Avengers: Secret Wars comics... which serve as the basis for the upcoming movie of the same name... but the planet is supposed to be much further out than what we see on the Spidey Tracker, so anything is possible, really.

Peter Parker encounters the alien symbiote in Avengers: Secret Wars

Whether Tom Holland wants to admit it on a podcast or not, Avengers: Secret Wars is the comic book arc that introduces the alien symbiote that gives Spidey his iconic black suit and eventually attaches itself to Eddie Brock, who indeed becomes Venom. In Secret Wars #8, Peter Parker encounters the alien symbiote, which drops into his hand and spreads over his entire body, turning his costume black and white. It isn't until The Amazing Spider-Man #300 that the symbiote returns and attaches itself to scorned journalist Eddie Brock while he's sitting in a church asking God to forgive him for being awful to Spider-Man (much like that popularly memed scene from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 that sees Topher Grace sitting in the pews asking God to kill Spider-Man, though not as funny).

While the black suit and the introduction of Venom are an important part of Secret Wars, the overall arc sees the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and more trapped on a planet known as Battleworld, where they're forced to fight the villains of that planet essentially to the death. It'll be the most ambitious MCU adaptation for sure (but I do really want to see Holland's Spidey in that suit).

Spider-Man is indirectly responsible for the creation of anti-mutant technology

Peter is sort of directly responsible... though the inhibitor wasn't made with ill intentions. In the comics, an anti-mutant device known as an inhibitor collar pops up in X-Men #141. The collar, created by mutant-killing military scientist Bolivar Trask, was placed around the neck of any mutant who was wrongfully thrown into the South Bronx Mutant Containment Center as part of the passing of an unjust law known as the Mutant Registration Act. The inhibitor collar prevents mutants and any super-powered beings from using their powers.

In Brand New Day, Peter develops the technology with the intention to control his own rapidly changing powers, while also knowing that it can be used on just about any being with powers. He attempts to attach it to the Hulk, but no dice. He successfully attaches it to Jean Grey, whom he turns over to Bill Metzger under the guise of 'doing the right thing.' We see Bill and his cronies use it as a way to subdue Jean in order to experiment on her, and we never see it again after Spidey is shot and Jean is rescued. We also never see Bill again, either.

It's important to note that the Department of Damage Control was using tech from captured/defeated villains, such as Shocker, to develop weaponry that can take down super-powered beings. You might recall that they used Shocker's arm console to develop guns that have the power to dissolve Peter's artificial webbing. It's likely that Bill and his cronies took the inhibitor technology and are hiding out somewhere... and that this will all be revisited in the upcoming standalone X-Men movie.

Spider-Man teams up with the X-Men

Think of it this way: if Peter was able to invent the inhibitor, the X-Men might need his help in order to destroy or reverse it. There's also the fact that Spider-Man and the X-Men have teamed up several times throughout comic book history, including one specific arc where Spider-Man and Jean Grey work together at the X-Mansion to mentor young mutants.

But there's also a chance (hear me out) that Spider-Man could be teaming up with the X-Men to take down Dark Phoenix... which is the supervillain Jean Grey turns into after being overwhelmed by her own powers and manipulated by Mastermind. The ending of Brand New Day does imply that Jean is on a bus headed upstate to the X-Men mansion (which also implies that the X-Men haven't even been formed as a team yet) and is therefore about to learn how to use her powers correctly and for good. But because we've already seen just how powerful she is and what evil she's capable of right off the bat, it wouldn't surprise me if the MCU decided to go ahead and adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga.

Dark Phoenix aside, Jean has always been morally gray in the comics (from killing Rogue to making Cyclops kill Professor X), but introducing a founding member of the X-Men into the MCU as a supervillain was a choice... and one they might decide to go a bit deeper with.

Kevin Feige has acknowledged that last summer's Fantastic Four: First Steps underperformed.

The film was released in July 2025 and grossed $521.9 million worldwide, despite being billed as a major Marvel blockbuster and including a post-credits scene that directly set up Avengers: Doomsday.

"Many things can be true at once," Feige told Variety, when asked if Marvel's recent misfires were a sign audiences are tiring of the same story. "I think last year's Fantastic Four looked and sounded like nothing that had been done in a superhero movie before, and it only [grossed] $521 million."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, in comparison, has beaten Avengers: Endgame's record for the biggest domestic opening of all time and currently sits at $932 million worldwide – after just one weekend.

"Brand New Day is very directly a part four. It picks up right after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and yet it tells a story that resonates. It's ultimately about loneliness and the dangers of staying in our apartments by ourselves, looking at our phones. That resonates across cultures and across the globe right now," Feige explained.

The Fantastic Four box office was made even more disappointing by the fact that it grossed less than Superman, which also released in July 2025 and ultimately made $618.7 million. However, this year's Supergirl flopped at the box office and currently sits at a global total of just under $126 million.

But we'll soon see Marvel's First Family again in Doomsday. Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Ben Grimm, and Joseph Quinn's Johnny Storm are all returning, though plot details are thin on the ground at the moment.

The team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day have been taking a well-earned victory lap in the press over the last 24 hours, after it was confirmed that the new Marvel Phase 6 movie topped Avengers: Endgame at the box office in the US on its opening weekend. But amidst the congratulatory back-slapping, director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed a key tidbit from production that goes a long way to explaining why Tom Holland is the perfect Spider-Man.

Warning: spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day follow.

During a conversation with Deadline, Cretton revealed that the very first dramatic scene shot captured for the movie was the moment where Peter Parker brings flowers to Aunt May's grave. At the end of a long day (if you'll recall, Peter visits the grave multiple times across the film), as they were about to wrap, Cretton decided to shoot an unplanned version, in case it was needed for the end of the movie. Holland was mic'd up, and improvised the line "You'd be happy to know that I've decided I'm not going to do this alone anymore" on the spot, according to Cretton.

"That statement became the north star of the entire movie," Cretton said. "Now it feels obvious that's where the movie was always headed, but at the time we shot it, we didn't really have that simple core idea yet. We worked backward from that point and realized, 'That's where we're going.' To me, that's the entire movie right there." It's proof, were it needed, that Holland knows his Peter Parker better than anyone (and that maybe he'll make a great screenwriter one day).

Spider-Man: Brand New Day got off to a record-breaking start at the box office this weekend, pulling in some $932 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing opening weekend of all time globally, behind Avengers: Endgame's untouchable $1.2 billion. And that was without an IMAX bump, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day is only set to share the biggest screens going with The Odyssey from August 7.

Now that the various cats are out of the bag when it comes to the fourth, secret-shrouded Holland Spidey movie, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and co have been speaking more freely about the movie's many surprises. Feige even revealed that the film's misunderstood villain, Jean Grey, was instead originally "a very obscure character nobody has ever heard of." A prop modeller on the film also explained where those Mister Negative rumors came from.

Next up for Marvel Studios are VisionQuest on the small screen, and make-or-break team-up movie Avengers: Doomsday on the big screen. Though, as far as we're aware, Tom Holland's Spider-Man won't show up in either. The Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene may offer a few clues about when he'll next swing onto screens.

The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield would return as his webslinging hero – on one condition.

"I don't know. I really don't know," Garfield told The Playlist's The Discourse podcast, when asked what another Spidey project would need to offer for him to return.

"I would need it to be very, very odd. I would need it to be very strange, and I would need it to be completely unconventional and almost – I wouldn't say boring – but I would want it to be just completely unexpected, like a genre of Spider-Man that you've never seen before, that feels very left field," he continued.

Garfield returned for Spider-Man: No Way Home thanks to some multiversal shenanigans (alongside Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker), but he hasn't been seen in the MCU since.

"And I don’t even know what that would be," Garfield added. "Maybe like a road trip movie."

While Garfield might not be making his return as Peter Parker anytime soon, though, you can currently see Tom Holland's Spidey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is in theaters now.

"Taking Spidey back to web-slinging basics, Tom Holland's fourth solo outing as Spider-Man is a blast, with personal stakes to match its evolved spectacle. It's the Multiverse Saga's best movie… at least until Doomsday," reads our 4-star Spider-Man: Brand New Day review.

Rumors were rife that Spider-Man: Brand New Day would finally bridge a divide that fans have been waiting decades to heal between the MCU and the former Fox X-Men, as speculation swirled around Sadie Sink playing a familiar red-headed hero.

Yet, even as the Sadie Sink reveal played out in the cinema, I stifled a small squeal as Peter's facial recognition from his AI-sidekick EV revealed her to be none other than Jean Grey. Sure, we'd had a brief post-credit scene after The Marvels when Monica Rambeau wakes up in an alternative universe with Beast looking after her, and the mayhem of cameos in Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness (which the less said about the better), but nothing longer-lasting than a brief dopamine fix of seeing a surprise character cameo.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day collides two universes with such ease that you wonder if they always co-existed together. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has ensured that first and foremost this feels like a quintessential Spider-Man film, reminiscent more of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's maturer take on the web-headed hero than the vigorous, quippy teenage version that Tom Holland has become known for. As much as the slow-motion swings, on-the-fly jokes, and identity crisis about who he is behind the mask feel inherently Spider-Man, Brand New Day also doubles as a great X-Men film.

No inhibitions

After an immense period of isolation following the trauma of losing Aunt May and having his identity wiped from the memory of everyone he's ever loved, Peter's spidey-senses become more unreliable. Blackouts, headaches, and destructive behaviour follow as his mutation develops and interrupts his friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man routine. His body's physical reaction to the burnout that comes from never switching off causes his DNA to mutate to become more spider than human, as his arachnid hormones spike. Similar to the plot of many of the X-Men films, Peter now has to decide whether to embrace this darker, less inhibited version of his powers, or to suppress them, control them in an effort to go back to 'normal.' Or as normal as a man who can crawl around the ceiling in a lycra onesie can be.

To begin with, Peter attempts to fix the problem in a Tony Stark-like way by building an inhibitor that will decrease his spider hormones and control his DNA from mutating any further. Despite warnings from Bruce Banner about the dangers of this technology – which could be used to control any enhanced individual (and may be setting up a future X-Men movie) – Peter builds his own means of genetic silencing to cure the parts of his abilities that he doesn't like, namely its self-destructive, primal animalistic side.

The inhibitor is reminiscent of Agents of Shield, where a device was used to control Daisy, aka Quake's, powers to prevent her from imploding the Earth. As opposed to simply copying the plot of X-Men with a serum that cures enhanced individuals, this scientific approach feels far more suited to the former aspiring MIT student.

Back in the Fox days, Magneto's biggest concern was humans creating cures for mutants to not only muzzle their powers but get rid of them entirely, out of fear and prejudice. It comes up time and time again in the X-Men prequels, too, that the biggest threat to mutants (apart from the in-fighting about whether to trust or fear humans) is experimentation on them to create a cure or inhibitor that would stop them from simply existing as themselves.

Mutant mayhem

In the Avengers universe, Peter wouldn't be called a mutant, just superhuman, as he wasn't born with a genetic mutation. But, of course, just like Jean, he is a mutant. Half spider, half human, an individual who is special with powers that other people don’t understand and can fear and want to control. Part of the reason that Jean seamlessly slots into this world is that she’s almost a mirror to Peter.

Peter has to go on his own journey to realise that Jean, as powerful and dangerous as she is, is being exploited simply because she's different. To begin with, this ignorance of the suffering that mutants can face (Mysterio incident aside, he's always been celebrated as one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes) leads Peter to trust the suave director of Damage Control and use his universal inhibitor as a means to stop the supposed baddie, Jean.

Instead, in true X-Men style, the department experiments on Jean in the hopes of manipulating her powers to replicate them and turn regular individuals into telepathic weapons of destruction. In the MCU, we've briefly seen experimentation on Bucky, but this weaponising of superpowers, whatever the cost, is a trope predominantly seen in the X-Men universe.

In the end, Peter learns to embrace what makes him special, as it's a gift, not a curse – a relatable message that comes through time and time again in the X-Men comics and films. Jean feels fully integrated into this universe, an equal and mirror to Peter's own suffering, as they both have to learn to live after immense trauma. And come to terms with the darker, more unyielding depths of their powers that trigger after the devastating loss of people they love.

Alone together

Brand New Day pulls off a rare feat to be able to merge two existing franchises in a way that feels seamless and reminiscent of the crossovers in earlier Avengers movies. Jean also fits in with Peter, as she's a young mutant who is trying to come to terms with who she is outside of her powers and how she navigates this profound responsibility alone. All of which Peter can instinctively relate to, in a way other heroes might not.

The gradual introduction to characters from the wider Marvel canon also helps establish the dynamics and structures of this world ahead of Avengers: Doomsday. A major part of Marvel's shortcomings in the Multiverse Saga has been how disconnected the universe has become. So, it was a welcome change to see echoes of The Infinity Saga's approach to universe-building in Brand New Day. Naturally, Yelena would be concerned with 'big potato stuff' as part of the New Avengers, but is on hand to offer advice to the 'sad' Spider-Man when he stumbles across a potato that's slightly bigger than the 'small, baby' problems he's meant to be solving.

The film also naturally sets up the next film in the MCU slate, Avengers: Doomsday, as it starts to bring different heroes together – Yelena, Peter, Jean and Frank, aka The Punisher – as well as introducing a new technology that most likely will appear again in the future. If we learnt anything from Ultron, it's that even the smartest heroes, when desperate, will utilise questionable inventions to try and protect the Earth from alien invaders, such as the incoming storm with Doctor Doom.

Ultimately, Brand New Day should be used as the blueprint for future MCU crossovers as it merges multiple existing worlds, familiar storylines and characters to show how they co-exist together in one universe. In fact, they may be the only people who can truly understand the isolation, burden, and trauma that comes with being an enhanced individual in a society that fears anyone who is different.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is out, and we still don't know who Eman Esfandi is playing (aside from being MJ's new boyfriend, of course). Some fans believe they've figured it out, but given the new influx of wild fan theories... I'm not so sure.

Warning: Mild spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day below!

The common belief seems to be that Esfandi is playing Paul Rabin, who made his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 6 #1. One fan says that the open captions screenings of Spider-Man: Brand New Day list the actor's character name as Paul, though Esfandi is only listed as "The Boyfriend" in the movie's credits. Until we have public proof of this, however, all we can do is speculate.

In the comics, Peter and Mary Jane encounter Paul after entering his universe while fighting a villain known as the Emissary. Long story short, Mary Jane ends up accidentally sending Peter back to Earth-616 and ends up stuck with Paul for four whole years... and they end up adopting two children. Could Esfandi's new character be Paul?

Well, some other fans think MJ's new boyfriend is either Tarantula, or Boomerang. There's really no basis for either theory other than the characters have similar facial features to Esfandi, but one fan pointed out that there'd be some funny irony in MJ dating a "knock-off" version of Peter, seeing as Tarantula is more or less just that (though much scarier looking in appearance). Another theory, though not as popular, is that Esfandi is playing Harry Osborn (and that the job MJ turns down was indeed a position at OsCorp).

We're not sure if Marvel will go to Sadie Sink-levels of secrecy to keep the identity of Esfandi's character on the low... but a Paul confirmation could be coming our way sooner or later.

Mahershala Ali has finally spoken out about Marvel's failed Blade reboot, and he's over it.

"Not with me," Ali said when asked by GQ if Blade was still in the works. "No offense to them. I’ve been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on."

The statement comes just days after Marvel boss Kevin Feige said he felt like a "gigantic loser and failure" for not getting the movie off the ground with Ali.

Continued Ali: "Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie. I feel creatively redeemed on some level, just in my own journey between me, myself, and I. But I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question."

To sum up the long and tumultuous saga: a new Blade movie, one that would introduce the half-vampire hero into the MCU, was announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2021 with two-time Academy Award winner Ali as the titular hero. Bassam Tariq was initially announced as director, but exited the film a month before production was set to begin in 2022 due to creative differences. Some of these creative differences were reportedly due to early scripts that had Blade filming an early 1900s period piece of sorts, rather than set in modern day or on Earth-616 (which is Marvel's main universe).

French filmmaker Yann Demange took over later that year, but production was halted once again due to the WGA strikes, which pushed its 2024 release date to 2025. In 2023, the film was given an (exciting) R rating. In 2024, it was officially removed from the Marvel release calendar.

Ali can be seen next in Tariq's Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which he said made good use of the swordsman skills he learned while shooting Blade.

The Batman 2 production designer Luke Hull has posted what appears to be a prop photo from the production of the DC sequel – and it may confirm the appearance of villains we've been dying to see on the big screen.

As you can see below, a complicated labyrinth structure has got tongues wagging among The Batman fandom.

The smart money, if this is indeed related to The Batman 2, is about the Court of Owls, the shadowy protectors of Gotham who have pulled strings from the sidelines for centuries.

The first major appearance of the masked villains in Scott Snyder's Batman comics run culminated in Batman having to fight the group in a maze that looks eerily similar to the one presented here.

A coincidence? A tease? Whatever it is, it's proved the catalyst for speculation that the Court of Owls – perhaps the most-requested villains in a crowded field – are making their bow in The Batman 2.

Elsewhere, the layer of mystery surrounding the project's main players shows no signs of dissipating.

The Batman 2, recently delayed until 2028, includes Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan among its newcomers, though there has been no concrete information about who they are playing just yet. Stan's new bald look, however, has led to talk he could be playing shaven-headed serial killer Victor Zsasz.

What is more certain is that The Batman 2 will look amazing – if Matt Reeves' snow-covered screentest is anything to go by.

The Batman 2, starring Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis, opens in cinemas on February 18, 2028.

New Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung into cinemas last weekend to rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, including game developer slash Twitter film reviewer Hideo Kojima, who seems to heavily relate to Peter Parker's struggles.

"A lonely hero, a lonely Spidey, a lonely Peter Parker," begins Kojima's review on Twitter. "It was fresh and entertaining. Spider-Man has, up until now, generally wrapped up in trilogies as complete sets… This film continues both the cast and the story, but it's reset, depicting the loneliness and anguish of Peter, who's been left all alone. It can be seen as the start of a new series or as a continuation of the previous one. It's a pretty clever structure."

Kojima feels as though the fourquel's title Brand New Day attributes to the movie taking a risk at a time when "sincere filmmaking is starting to feel more and more precarious." But for Kojima, the new Spidey movie "puts the 'brand' of a major franchise series – which can't afford to fail – to the test with its 'new day'." Check out the full post below.

It seems as though many others share Kojima's sentiment. The new movie currently stands at an impressive 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an even better 98% audience score. Brand New Day is predicted to gross just shy of $1 billion. It looks like it may achieve just that, as the movie has grossed $927 million so far worldwide after hitting US theaters on Friday, July 31, and international cinemas from July 29. In fact, Brand New Day has already beaten Avengers: Endgame in terms of Thursday night previews, and opened to the second-highest weekend ever in movie history. Endgame still holds that title, earning a whopping $1.2 billion during its first weekend on screen in 2019.

A Spider-Man: Brand New Day designer has debunked one of its biggest villain rumors

Twitter user @WilliamD1123 – who appears to be assistant prop modeller William Osborne – responded to a fan enquiring about the devil symbols seen on tanks during filming of one action sequence.

At the time, it sparked intense debate over whether villain Mister Negative, perhaps best known to fans of Insomniac's Spider-Man Games, would rock up to face the webhead in New York.

Unfortunately for those hoping for at least a slight tease of what's to come down the line, its origins were surprisingly low-key and circumstantial.

"I can explain! The production designer requested some symbols to go on the tank, including a ‘devil’," the designer wrote on Twitter. "My colleague added the devil symbol to the tank, as well as a panther (I think)."

They cryptically added: "But that’s not the only time you see that devil symbol in the film…"

That's the only nod to Spider-Man's rogues' gallery hiding off-screen in a prop or two. As @WilliamD1123 pointed out elsewhere on Twitter, there are Easter eggs in the Empire State University lecture room, with one student plastering cartoonish stickers of Vulture, Green Goblin, and Mysterio on their laptop. The Spot – who has recently caused carnage in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – is also represented.

We did end up getting Jean Grey, so that's a fair trade. That's despite Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige being transparent about the fact that another, more obscure villain was considered before settling on Sadie Sink's mutant.

Update: It's official – Spider-Man: Brand New Day had the biggest opening weekend of all time in the US, with final totals coming in at $360 million, just ahead of Avengers: Endgame's $357 million (not adjusted for inflation). That puts the final total for the weekend at a staggering $932 million worldwide. Thwip!

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already swung into the record books. Not only has the fourth outing for Tom Holland's Peter Parker had one of the biggest box office opening weekends of all time globally, it may yet top Avengers: Endgame as the biggest opening weekend of all time domestically, once final numbers are in.

Per Box Office Mojo, the Marvel Phase 6 movie opened to a staggering $927 million globally. To put that into perspective, box office sensation The Odyssey is sitting on $911 million globally after three weekends. That total is still some way behind Avengers: Endgame's unfathomable $1.2 billion global opening weekend haul – a record that may never be beaten – but is almost $300 million ahead of the previous number two, Avengers: Infinity War, which opened to $640 million in 2018.

Even more impressive, arguably, is that Brand New Day is on the cusp of topping Avengers: Endgame's all-time opening weekend record at the US box office. Current reports have Brand New Day at $355 million for the (long) weekend, some $2.1 million short of Avengers: Endgame's $357.1 million. Brand New Day's final total is almost certain to go up once final figures are accounted for, with some already suggesting it could come in at a record-setting $359 million.

Whichever way you swing it, Brand New Day has been a roaring success, and a much-needed win for both the beleaguered Marvel Studios and distributor Sony, whose Spider-Man extended universe was quietly shelved ahead of a planned reboot earlier this year. Perhaps they should have accelerated those plans to merge the two universes.

Brand New Day has also been a big hit with audiences and critics. Our own Spider-Man: Brand New Day review calls it: "Marvel Studios' strongest standalone outing since Avengers: Endgame." The movie is currently sitting on a very respectable 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The question now is: where does Spider-Man go from here? There are a lot of big reveals in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and some minor revelations as well. Some might even say they’re small potatoes and big potatoes.

One such nugget of information that could be easily skipped over, though, involves one of the movie’s most casual and downright coolest cameos. As is compulsory with any story diving into plot points of the new wall-crawling cinematic outing, we’re going to drop an official spoiler warning here. Ignore your Spidey senses and despair, or dive right in willingly. The choice is yours.

Oh good. You made it. The cameo we’re referring to is none other than Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, leader of the Thunderbolts* and now New Avengers, who dropped in to give Spidey (Tom Holland) some help with his mysterious body-hopping villain at the start of the movie (during a hilarious spa scene) and nearing its third act.

Jumping on a call to help the webhead out, their conversation gets interrupted by Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya), who are in awe of the superhero-hosted chinwag. It’s here, though, that after getting ushered out of shot by Peter, Ned points out that he’s talking to none other than Black Widow.

It might be a throwaway line, but it’s worth pointing out that up until now, Yelena hasn’t officially been named the Black Widow. The title stuck squarely on her big sister, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), who has long since passed away following the events of Avengers: Endgame and the Red Room program's shutdown. It’s nice, then, that now, after finally finding her place in the world, she’s able to carry on her sister’s legacy, which will very likely flourish during the events of Avengers: Doomsday.

Yelena will be one of many heroes who have taken up mantles previously held by heroes who either died or have given up the superhero schtick altogether. When Victor von Doom does arrive, he’ll be taking on the next generation of Black Panther (Letitia Wright’s Shuri), Captain America (Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson), and now a Black Widow. We’ll have to see how they all get along when Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18.

Now with four standalone adventures under his belt, it’s safe to say that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has faced a wild array of villains up to this point. One big bad he has yet to square up against, though, is one that has spent more time in Hell’s Kitchen than wandering into Queens causing trouble.

Vincent D’Onofrio has been very vocal about wanting to see Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin square up against Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, but blamed studio rights for creating the holdup. Well, according to cap-wearing world-builder Kevin Feige, that might not be as big of a problem as we expected.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz about where potential Spider-Man stories, Feige admitted that Kingpin was never out of consideration to take on the hero he first shared a comic book page with. Were rights issues really that much of a problem in holding up a fresh new superhero showdown? “They’re not, they’re not,” Feige assured. “There are things to navigate like everything else. We talked about all those characters at one point.”

Up until now, the only big street-level players that Spidey has crossed paths with are The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and, unknowingly, Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox) in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Annoyingly, fans also came close to having Rosario Dawson reprising her role as Claire Temple from Daredevil in the new Spidey movie, before the scene was cut. In the case of Fisk, his presence is briefly felt in the new chapter, as a Mayor Fisk poster appears in the background of one scene in the film, but that's all we've got so far.

The good thing is, whatever the connection, big or small, it’s clear there’s an effort to integrate more of these characters that aren’t fighting planet-devouring threats like Galactus, and instead bump into heroes that are trying to stop corrupt political moves and weapons deals. We’ll just have to keep our web shooters crossed that Fisk and Spidey cross paths somewhere down the line and maybe even Frank and Matt Murdock drop in to lend a hand, fist, or some immensely unnecessary firepower while they’re at it.

Before Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit the big screen, Tom Holland says there were multiple cuts of the new Marvel movie, including one he really didn't like.

"What's really interesting is, we've seen loads of different cuts of this movie," said the Peter Parker star to Quotable. "One of the cuts was, they took all of the notes from all of the random people that saw the film, and they changed the movie. And then, we watched it, and we hated it."

Holland didn't disclose what was exactly different about the cut, but added, "It totally didn’t work. And it's what the people were asking for, but it wasn't quite what we wanted as the creatives. But they learned lessons from that experience. So, a movie can change in a thousand different ways in the edit room."

Luckily, Sony listened to Holland, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day is already a hit with critics and audiences alike. "Holland’s fourth solo outing as Spider-Man is a blast, with personal stakes to match its evolved spectacle," reads our review.

Brand New Day currently stands at a near-perfect 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, and is on track to debut to one of the MCU's biggest box office openings yet.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up four years after Doctor Strange wiped the world's memory of Spider-Man's true identity, and finds the hero at his lowest point yet. But when a villain that no one can see starts to torment New York City, he must pull himself out of his slump and once again save the day. Billy Clements, who plays Ramrod in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has revealed that he originally had a more fleshed-out role in the new Spider-Man movie.

Clements – who also portrayed 'The Russian' in Deadpool and Wolverine – wrote on Instagram of his experience, "A lot of Ramrod's stuff was cut, but they had to cut out 3 hours and a lot more recognised actors were totally cut out… Really happy to be there if only for a bit."

The actor also added that he studied all of Ramrod's comic book appearances (presumably including The Amazing Spider-Man #221, which is recreated in the movie by director Destin Daniel Cretton) to represent the character as "accurately" as possible.

Ramrod appears during the opening act's montage of Spider-Man's crimefighting antics, including taking down the likes of Boomerang, Tarantula, and Scorpion.

While speculation may run rampant over who didn't make the cut (Keith David, after all, is only part of one background voiceover moment), we're pretty confident that Claire Temple actor Rosario Dawson is one of them.

Temple, the confidant and nurse to so many of the MCU's street-level heroes, could have conceivably appeared during the dramatic events of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day ending. No spoilers here. But if you know, you know.

Speaking at GalaxyCon, Dawson stated she "shot a scene" for Brand New Day but it "got cut out."

It seems Spider-Man: Brand New Day is catching its audience in a web of intrigue ahead of opening weekend.

Early box office predictions – depending on your source – have the fourth Spider-Man MCU movie's opening gross at anywhere from $465 million to a whopping $800 million.

Either way, it's on the cusp of making Marvel history as Tom Holland's Spidey gets ready to swing into cinemas.

Deadline, using National Research Group data, says Brand New Day is tracking for $195 million in the US, though Variety goes one step further by earmarking over $250 million.

That would put it in esteemed company alongside Avengers: Endgame ($357 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260 million), and Avengers: Infinity War ($257 million).

Twitter account Global Box Office has an $800 million global box office on opening weekend, which may be a little unrealistic – but not impossible.

In short: it's going to be a phenomenon. We're looking at Brand New Day hitting heights not seen in the MCU since the 2021 multiverse mash-up Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it could become the biggest non-Avengers: Endgame Marvel movie ever.

Spider-Man has always been as close to a box office certainty as possible, but throw in the crossover potential with Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Jon Bernthal's Punisher, plus continued speculation over Sadie Sink's mystery character, and it appears the stars have aligned for Brand New Day to crush any notion of superhero fatigue as we hurtle towards Avengers: Doomsday this December.

Marvel Studios may have hit a rough patch following the box office conquering high of Avengers: Endgame, but the undeniable bright spot of the shaky Multiverse Saga has been Tom Holland's Spider-Man. After 2021's No Way Home – a post-Endgame victory lap featuring all three big-screen Spideys – Spider-Man: Brand New Day is something of a creative refresh. Divisive director Jon Watts is out, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is in after an aborted Avengers movie. And while there's much that feels familiar here, alongside some frustrating wheel-spinning as far as the MCU's big picture is concerned, Brand New Day is a home run, and Marvel Studios' strongest standalone outing since Endgame.

Picking up some four years after the events of No Way Home, which ended with Doctor Strange casting a spell that caused the world to forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including love of his life MJ (Zendaya) and geeky BFF Ned (Jacob Batalon), Brand New Day takes Spidey back to web-slinging basics. Pete may be keeping the streets safe by taking down colourful costumed villains, but he's the loneliest boy in New York, longing for a reunion with MJ and Ned, and privately mourning the death of Aunt May.

Enter a mysterious hooded individual (Stranger Things star Sadie Sink), who's committing impossible crimes by jumping from mind to mind, and mysteriously targeting the Department of Damage Control, led by Bill Metzger (Severance's Trammell Tilman). The identity of Sink's mystery character has been the source of rampant speculation, and we won't spoil it here, but she's integral to the story and broadens the scope of the MCU in a major way. Also in the mix are The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), who add to the sense of Avengers-like event here, particularly when all three come together for a scrap that feels ripped straight from a comic-book splash page.

Crimes and Punishment

Cretton made one of the more fondly regarded post-Endgame movies in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and his more grounded filmmaking style (born from a pre-Marvel career in indie cinema) proves a perfect fit for a street-level take on Marvel's wall-crawler. The web-swinging here feels as visceral and immediate as the character drama, with significant time and attention dedicated to Peter's hollow personal life. Arguably, it's the first time a Spidey movie has got this alchemical mix just right since Spider-Man 2, as, like Sam Raimi, Cretton knows Spider-Man is at its best when Peter's great power comes with an even greater responsibility.

Speaking of power, Peter's had a bit of an upgrade in Brand New Day, and mercifully there isn't a nano-bot in sight. Peter's homemade, primary color costume pops off the screen, and might be the best a Spidey-suit has ever looked outside of the comics. His organic evolution is also a key part of the story, allowing Cretton and co. to take Peter back to square one, as he learns to use even more powerful organic web-shooters and heightened senses as if for the first time, increasing the danger as the threat to the city escalates.

And while the reality-ending stakes of No Way Home are brought down to Earth here, Brand New Day doesn't fall short when it comes to spectacle. The aforementioned Hulk/Punisher three-way is a knockout; it's the scariest Hulk has been since his helicarrier rampage in the original Avengers. A dazzling battle with ninja assassins The Hand is like something out of House of Flying Daggers, with graceful wirework and furious fight choreography captured with a corkscrew camera. And what a delight to have a wisecracking, cocksure Spidey in his prime at the center of it all.

Under the hood

It's a more personal, more emotional story than any of the Holland Spideys, one that reckons with the consequences of Peter's decision at the climax of No Way Home in a way that doesn't let him off Scott-free. Zendaya and Holland are particularly strong in a number of key heart-to-hearts. As is Bernthal's Punisher, who's softened only slightly for the family-friendly Spider-Man crowd, his big-brother-little-brother bickering with Peter a constant delight whenever the pair are (reluctantly) brought together.

Some ropey VFX aside, it looks terrific; Cretton has an eye for New York that Watts never did (it's telling that the credits play over gorgeous, verite-style footage from across the city). It never quite troubles Spider-Man 2 as the very best of the superhero genre; it plays things a little too safe for that, with a predictable third-act villain turn, and a certain sense that we're retreading old ground with a character we all know inside out by this stage.

And without getting into specifics, if you're tapped into the rampant speculation around the movie, you may be a little disappointed by the lack of true surprises in Brand New Day. But – Sadie Sink mystery aside – there's a sense that, for the first time in a long time, this is a Spider-Man movie that's been made for the right reasons, with its long-term legacy in mind, not just Friday night audience reactions. Brand New Day is all the better for it.

Ryan Reynolds shocked fans during San Diego Comic-Con 2026 when he revealed during the Marvel Studios panel that he had been walking around the convention in a grey-and-blue Deadpool costume... and that he wasn't just a cosplayer with an extra-impressive suit.

As it turns out, Reynolds had been taking photos with fans all day ahead of the panel... and no one knew. "The fans got Deadpool off the ground so many years ago," Reynolds wrote on Twitter alongside a video montage of him meeting fans. "Yesterday, 10 years after the first film and exactly 2 years after Deadpool & Wolverine, I felt so lucky to be on the #SDCC floor with everyone whose unapologetic devotion brings so much joy to this world." "No handlers, no security, no ropes. WHAT A GIFT," he continued. "Thanks to everyone I met, who aren’t only cosplaying but world-building. And also… actual Sergeant Slaughter!"

At the panel itself, Reynolds showed up in costume to ask: "Why was Thor crying?" This, of course, is in reference to the weird Deadpool and Wolverine scene in the TVA that shows Thor crying on a screen. Is it from a future Avengers movie? We have no idea. Neither did any of the Avengers on stage at the panel, including Paul Rudd, who replied, "He's a Wrexham fan?"

There was no word as to whether Deadpool would be in Avengers: Doomsday, nor did we get an update on a potential Deadpool 4. Though, maybe Thor was crying because he didn't get a photo with undercover Ryan Reynolds at San Diego Comic-Con.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige says there's plenty more Spider-Man on the way.

"The good news is, Sony has the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse series, which are very popular and excellent, and Beyond the Universe is coming out next year," Feige said in an interview with Shanghai media outlet Watching Hollywood. "But yes, we definitely have plans, and I think a live-action Spider-Man movie has this destiny: to add Miles sometime after the Spider-Verse series ends. We've been thinking and discussing more Spider-Man adventures, regardless of agreements or contracts. My production partner, Amy Pascal, is already working on it, and we've had in-depth discussions about what the next two, three, four, and five Spider-Man movies might be about."

Fans have been demanding a live-action Miles Morales movie since Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was first released. It didn't seem like a possibility until Spider-Man: No Way Home introduced the possibility of more than one Spider-Man co-existing in the MCU, albeit living in different universes.

There's also a nod to Miles in No Way Home: In one scene, Electro (Jamie Foxx) finally sees the Spider-Man from his universe, Andrew Garfield, unmasked. In a funny but touching way (that was apparently improvised), Electro says, "You're from Queens, you got that suit, you help poor people... I just thought you was gonna be black." Garfield's Spidey apologizes, to which Electro says, "There's gotta be a black Spider-Man out there somewhere." Spidey's enthusiastic nod and smile in that moment led a lot of fans to believe that a Miles Morales movie was inevitable.

There are also some rumors that Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin has been cast, or at least is in the running, as Miles Morales due to the fact that he refuses to do the classic Spider-Man web-slinging pose at conventions. Other popular fan-casts include Miles Brown, who led the show Black-ish from 2014-2022, and Myles Truitt, who had a recurring role on Stranger Things season 4.

The official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is here, and some eagle-eyed Marvel fans have pointed out what they believe to be the final shot (or one of the very last shots, at least) of the new Marvel movie.

The two-minute trailer sees the Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men all face off while the looming presence of Doctor Doom hangs over them. In one specific shot, Johnny Storm is seen holding his sister Sue while a (rather nuclear-disaster-looking) flash of light encompasses them. Twitter user NebsGoodTakes took the liberty of lowering the brightness on the trailer, which allegedly reveals debris from what appears to be a fatal explosion happening behind them. You can check it out below.

Neb went on to clarify: "Assuming the movie ends like in Hickman's Avengers run, the debris on the left is the final incursion wiping out 616." This is in reference to Jonathan Hickman's 2012-2025 Avengers comic book run, which sees Tony Stark and Captain America assemble a super team of Avengers (spanning heroes all across the globe) in order to defeat a villain conglomerate known as the Beyonders... of which Doctor Doom is a part of. To sum it up: "incursions" are coming to destroy the Earth as they know it, and the only way they can stop it is by destroying another world. They ultimately decide against this, and Earth-616 goes kaboom.

It's very possible that the movie follows these events... In fact, anything is possible given that we still don't know the true meaning behind Doctor Doom's arrival, or what his true endgame really is. It's also possible that an incursion is what destroyed the X-Mansion in the trailer as well. Only time will tell.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton says they're refusing to reveal Sadie Sink's character for a good reason... and that we won't be mad about it.

"If people are gonna get mad, I can't control that!" Cretton told Rolling Stone. "I wish everything was a secret. Some people wanna know everything, and some people don't. There are certain people like me... if I know I'm gonna watch a movie, I try not to even watch the trailers."

"But you'll see when you watch the movie that there's a very real reason not to tell people who Sadie Sink is playing," Cretton continued. "And I don’t think you'll get mad at it. I think you'll be like, 'Oh, I'm glad I didn't know that.'"

In the various Brand New Day trailers, Peter is faced with a "powerful threat" that no one can seem to defeat or even sense. The threat in question seems to be able to control minds and temporarily disable Spidey from using his powers... which are powers that founding X-Men member Jean Grey does indeed possess.

But, I ask you, why would Jean Grey be a bad guy right off the bat... unless she's playing the Dark Phoenix version of Jean Grey, or Madelyne Pryor, who is Jean Grey's 'evil' clone (and featured in X-Men '97 season 1). Either way, I will be seated.

Kevin Feige says he feels like a failure for not being able to get Marvel's indefinitely delayed Blade reboot off the ground.

"I'm feeling very excited that we got Wesley back for a time in Deadpool & Wolverine, and like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala [Ali]," Feige said in an interview with Josh Horowitz (via Variety).

Here's the tea: a brand new movie based on the vampire hero Blade, famously portrayed by Wesley Snipes in the 1998 film that helped get Marvel movies off the ground, was announced back in 2015. After several years without news, it was officially announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2021 that the film would be moving ahead with two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali as the titular hero.

Bassam Tariq (Ghosts of Sugar Land) was announced as director, but exited the film a month before production was set to begin in 2022. French filmmaker Yann Demange was announced as the new director later that year, but production was halted once again due to the WGA strike, which pushed its 2024 release date to 2025. The first iteration of the script took place in the 1920s, and was subsequently scrapped (though the costumes and sets may or may not have been used in the Oscar-winning horror Sinners). In 2023, the film was given a promising R rating. In 2024, however, it was removed from the Marvel release calendar entirely, and Ali (understandably) refuses to comment on it.

Snipes appeared as Blade in Deadpool and Wolverine, and it was one of the best things to ever happen to me. He also broke the Guinness World Record for longest career as a live-action Marvel character, totaling 25 years and 340 days at the time of his Deadpool and Wolverine cameo. It might be some time before we see a Blade movie, but it would be nice if they just let Snipes do it...

Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton says Insomniac's Spider-Man games inspired some of the stunts in the new movie.

"I am not a gamer, but I've played the game, but I surrounded myself with people who were obsessive gamers," Cretton told Polygon, when asked if he referenced Insomniac's Spider-Man video games while making the film. "So a lot of the people in our stunt department loved playing those video games. So they would do screen grabs of their play and bring it in and say like, 'Can we pull this move off?' So that was a great inspiration for things."

Marvel's Spider-Man is a video game franchise created by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive for PlayStation and Windows. The incredibly popular and well-received games include Marvel's Spider-Man, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2... and they're fun as heck, too.

It doesn't surprise me that some of the wildest shots from the games would serve as inspiration for the new film. In the games, Spidey can launch himself like a slingshot, nose-dive from a skyscraper before activating his web, slingshot between sections of a collapsing bridge, and launch himself through a glass window. Given that Peter has some new, uh, abilities in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we're ready for some brand new moves.

The new movie sees a down-on-his-luck Peter Parker wrestle with his new abilities while taking on a new, seemingly invincible threat while still being forgotten by his best friends and the world at large.

The official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has arrived, and while we get some pretty sick action scenes, a better understanding of the plot, and our first snippet of Robert Downey Jr.'s accent as Victor Von Doom... we have even more questions than we did before.

The two-minute trailer sees the Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men all face off while the looming presence of Doctor Doom hangs over them. But you might be wondering how the X-Men and the Avengers even meet, or how the Fantastic Four got to Earth-616, or if we're even on Earth-616 in the first place... No worries: that's where we come in. Below, we've put together the 5 biggest questions from the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, and given you our best answers.

How is Steve Rogers back from the past?

In one of the very first Avengers: Doomsday trailers (which were more like mini-teasers), we saw a fairly young-looking Steve Rogers cradling a newborn baby... and nothing else. In the latest trailer, we see Steve approach his old pal Thor, much to Thor's disbelief. In order to prove it's really him, Thor raises Mjölnir – and Steve is able to wield it without any hesitation (much like he did in Avengers: Endgame).

But how is Steve, who previously declined to return to the future in order to have a life with Peggy Rogers, née Carter, suddenly back on Earth-616? Our biggest clue is around one minute into the new trailer, when we see a hand holding Loki's TVA card. Though, at first glance, it may seem like Loki holding his own card... we can see, upon closer inspection, that the hand is wearing a wedding band on its ring finger. This is most likely Steve holding Loki's TVA card, meaning the good ol' Time Variance Authority is most likely responsible for Steve's time travel to the future. We don't yet know for sure, but we can also speculate that the TVA is responsible for quite a bit of the multiversal mess in Avengers: Doomsday.

Is Tom Hiddleston playing more than one Loki variant?

Speaking of multiversal mess, the inclusion of Loki's TVA card in the new trailer has sparked some confusion among fans. At the end of Loki season 2, our favorite trickster god is condemned to a life as the God of Stories, holding the literal fabric of the universe together at Yggdrasil. It's been confirmed that Loki, God of Stories, is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday... but the TVA card has some fans (and myself) wondering if TVA Loki is also set to make an appearance, and if Tom Hiddleston is indeed playing more than one Loki variant.

The actor previously told Men's Journal that Loki's journey in Doomsday picks up right where season 2 left off, and that the movie won't "undo" any character development. It also makes perfect sense for God of Stories Loki to appear in Doomsday given that Doom's arrival threatens the entire universe and everything it encompasses. I'm sticking to the theory, however, that TVA Loki brought Steve Rogers back from the past somehow (though we don't even know how the two would've made contact in the first place).

How do the Avengers end up inside the X-Mansion?

It's exciting to see the X-Men make an appearance in the MCU, but keep in mind that these are not the MCU's X-Men. Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier, Ian McKellan's Magneto, Rebecca Romijn's Mystique, James Marsden's Cyclops, and Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler are all part of the pre-MCU, Fox-owned X-Men franchise, and exist in Earth-10005.

Confusingly, Channing Tatum's Gambit is not from the same Earth as the Fox characters, as his standalone Gambit movie was never made, and exists in a 'temporary reality' known as Earth-TRN1401. Tatum's Gambit appeared in Deadpool and Wolverine, alongside a few other pre-MCU characters like Wesley Snipes's Blade and Jennifer Garner's Elektra.

The question is, how do the Avengers and the New Avengers end up inside the X-Mansion on Earth-10005? Again, we're going to blame the TVA somehow. It also seems that the Avengers realize they need all the help they can get to defeat Doom, so they travel elsewhere to recruit some more heroes. But if that's the case, then why are the Avengers fighting the X-Men in the new trailer?

How are the Fantastic Four in the main Marvel universe?

At the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the team is still living their lives in the year 1965 on Earth-828. In the Thunderbolts post-credits scene, however, Yelena tracks their ship as an "extra-dimensional" entering Earth-616's atmosphere. We have no idea what prompted them to head to Earth-616, or how (though Reed Richards most likely figured it out given that he's the smartest man in the universe and all), but most importantly... why?

In the comics, Doctor Doom is to the Fantastic Four what Green Goblin is to Spider-Man. He's their biggest adversary, and he appears in their living room next to a young Franklin in the First Steps post-credits scene. Something had to have happened between Doom's appearance and the team heading off to Earth-616, but we don't quite know what that is yet.

What is Doctor Doom's endgame?

The X-Men and the Fantastic Four have crossed over a few times in the comics, and each time Doctor Doom had a plot to either kidnap Sue Storm or cure Kitty Pryde of her mutant powers for his own personal gain. He's also battled the Avengers, with one specific plotline involving the Young Avengers (whose appearance in the MCU we've been anticipating for quite some time now). At the time of writing, we don't know what Victor Von Doom is plotting in Avengers: Doomsday, or what his endgame is regarding destroying the universe. Because he appears in the post-credits scene for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, I think the answer lies with them... especially since, historically, he's their main adversary.

Interestingly enough, Variety posed a theory that Doctor Doom is a variation of Iron Man from another planet (which would explain Robert Downey Jr.'s casting), but Victor Von Doom and Tony Stark are completely separate characters in the comics. They do butt heads in the 2008 Iron Man: Legacy of Doom, which Downey was seen reading as part of his Doomsday prep. He was also reading Secret Wars, in which Doctor Doom is very much alive, which tells me that he won't be defeated at the end of Doomsday and that this is just the beginning for the supervillain's reign of terror in the MCU.

The first official Avengers: Doomsday trailer is finally here, giving us our first real look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. However, thanks to some confusing angles and a rather bizarre accent, the highly anticipated trailer has me worried that Marvel may have taken the wrong direction with this new villain. That is, unless Marvel has another trick up its sleeve.

Avengers: Doomsday hasn't had the easiest road to the big screen. Once intended to be Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the project saw a complete overhaul followed by a series of delays. But excitement for the fifth Avengers movie soon shot up again after Marvel's famed Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 saw unmasked Iron Man star Downey as Doctor Doom, confirming the movie had swapped out Kang the Conqueror for the green-suited baddie.

With Doom never appearing in live-action before, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Not to mention the fact that Downey had spent the past decade-plus playing the MCU's first, and perhaps most beloved hero, Tony Stark. With that, I wondered how Marvel would get around the fact that the new villain looks and sounds exactly like the late Avenger. However, I'm not sure that the first trailer has settled my worries. In fact, I fear it has made matters worse.

Doctor Dracula

The new Avengers: Doomsday trailer immediately delivers what we have been waiting for. As Professor X's academy burns to the ground, we hear Doctor Doom warning, "Something's coming, something we may not be able to deter," before we see the villain kneeling, wearing his iconic armour and silver mask. Later in the trailer, we get a full look at Doom as he faces Chris Hemsworth's Thor, before the camera closes in on the villain's mask and glowing green eyes.

However, I can't help but feel as though Doom's voice sounds like a bad Dracula impersonator. Yes, in Marvel comics, Victor Von Doom was indeed born into a Romani community in a fictional nation known as Latveria. I understand that having the new foe sound anything like Stark would be way too confusing, but Downey's newfangled accent sounds dangerously close to Hotel Transylvania rather than the Eastern European scientific genius Doom is meant to be.

The second issue I have with how Doom is presented in the trailer. When we first saw Downey's Doom in The Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits scene, the villain had an incredibly dark and looming presence. Although he didn't really do anything too shocking in those few moments, his overall energy was ominous. But in the Doomsday trailer, the villain seems quite stiff and struggles to leave an impression. This differs from how Marvel Comics presents Doom as a 6-foot-7 force of nature who has brains and brawn. In short, I need him to have a similar aura to Agamemnon in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

Marvel's main man

Complaints aside, let's not get ahead of ourselves and judge a book by its cover right away. As I mentioned earlier, Doom's initial appearance in Fantastic Four did leave a lasting effect, so letting the first Doomsday trailer put a dampener on the whole project would be a mistake. We know that Downey is a capable actor and has been put in quite a difficult position in practically saving the fifth Avengers movie from being delayed indefinitely. Let's also remember that the movie is still in post-production, meaning any kinks can still be, ahem, ironed out.

I do think it was a mistake to give so much of Doom away in the very first trailer. Just look at Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The upcoming Spidey installment is less than two weeks from hitting the big screen, and we still don't know who the main villain is. With this, I wonder why Marvel has chosen to show so much of Doom. Could he be a red herring? I have had my doubts about whether Doom really is the main villain in Marvel Phase 6's Doomsday.

Another detail in the trailer, which I feel as though many people are skipping over, is that Doom seems to be warning the heroes that an Incursion is coming to destroy Earth-616. Why would he do that if he wanted to put an end to the Avengers? On top of this, the new Doomsday synopsis from Fandango teases "Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered." But fails to mention Doom by name.

The rest of the synopsis suggests anything goes in Doomsday, as the movie marks the Multiverse Saga's "final chapter" and "will lay the foundation for the future" of the MCU. I do think that Doomsday will change Marvel's Cinematic Universe as we know it, including killing off many of the heroes it is bringing back in its stacked cast list. I just hope that Doom's lackluster reveal is part of a bigger plan, and that we haven't just seen all of what Avengers: Doomsday's villain has to offer way too early.

The first Avengers: Doomsday trailer has finally released online after months of fevered anticipation, and with it the first snippet of Robert Downey Jr.'s performance as Doctor Doom. But despite the many thrilling teases (Loki! Mystique! Herbie!), all anyone can talk about is RDJ's 'Latverian' accent.

The trailer opens with an ominous bit of Doom narration: "Something's coming, something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we should be faced with an unthinkable decision," delivered in pseudo-Eastern European speech. While it's only two sentences, it gives a pretty clear sense of what Downey Jr. is going for with Doom, and it couldn't be more different from his iconic Tony Stark delivery.

"RDJ's Doom voice is actually really good," one fan began on Reddit. "It's like people forgot that RDJ is an actual, serious, versatile, Oscar-caliber actor and not just Tony Stark," added another – a damning statement given it's only 2 years since he swept awards season for his role in Oppenheimer. "His heavy accent made me so happy because I was worried they're just gonna pull a Stark mk.2," notes another, a fair point and one Marvel should get credit for.

Not everyone is convinced, though. "Bro is giving his best Nandor the Relentless," says one fan, landing a near-fatal blow. Nandor, if you don't know, is one of the comedy vampires from What We Do in the Shadows. Let's just say the comparison isn't meant as a compliment. Plenty of fans don't even seem to have realized that is RDJ speaking, which may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your perspective.

Either way, Downey Jr. and Marvel are clearly taking a big swing with Doctor Doom, who's leading the villainous charge in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Tickets for 'Infinity Vision' screenings of the 39th Marvel movie are now on sale, and there's a new Avengers: Doomsday synopsis as well, teasing "an existential threat unlike anything ever encountered" and a film that will "lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Alongside Robert Downey Jr., Doomsday's stacked cast includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, and several Fox-era X-Men, including Patrick Stewart's Professor X, Ian McKellen's Magneto and James Marsden's Cyclops. The new Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts will also appear, as well as the Wakandans and Loki, who is notably not sitting at the base of Yggdrasil in the trailer.

After months and months of waiting, the first official Avengers: Doomsday trailer is finally here, and it looks like a thrilling return to form for the MCU after years of wheel-spinning post-Endgame.

The trailer, which appears to be identical to the one shown behind closed doors at CinemaCon earlier this year, opens with the voice of Doctor Doom himself ominously intoning: "Something's coming, something we may not be able to deter." Clocking in at 2 minutes and 25 seconds, the extensive first glimpse features the Fantastic Four meeting the Wakandans, Yelena facing off against shapeshifting mutant Mystique, Gamit going toe-to-toe with Shang-Chi and, of course, the return of Steve Rogers, who is still worthy of wielding Mjolnir despite hanging up the shield.

Although this isn't the first we have seen of the new movie, after a string of teasers were released earlier this year, the new clip gives us our first real look at the battle against the MCU's newest villain. It seems fitting that the first official Doomsday trailer would hit the internet the same week as San Diego Comic-Con 2026, marking two years since Robert Downey Jr. was unmasked as Doctor Doom. Marvel is due to take over Hall H yet again this year, where we hope to see more of the new Avengers movie.

The trailer arrives not long after the new synopsis appeared on Fandango, teasing the Multiverse Saga's "final chapter" as "beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered." The listing states that the new Avengers movie "will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

If news of Avengers: Doomsday tickets imminently going on sale and a possible Avengers: Doomsday trailer dropping today weren't enough, Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that "another Deadpool film" is coming, suggesting it will draw closely from "a few deep cuts" from the comics.

Speaking on stage at Fanatics Fest (via @hobbynonsense on Instagram), Reynolds teased an inevitable fourth Deadpool film. "There's a few really deep cuts that are missing from the movies, I think there's a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics," Reynolds said, going on to name-check two comic writers in particular.

"There's certainly some stuff that I love that Fabian [Nicieza] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan is a friend and an incredible comic book writer. There's stuff coming, there eventually will be another Deadpool film." Check out the full clip below (warning: the audio is rough).

That seems pretty cut and dry: while it's yet to be officially announced, according to Reynolds, Deadpool 4 is on the way, and it'll take its cues from the comics. The question, of course, is when we're likely to see the Merc with a Mouth back on screen after a smash-hit trilogy. There was only a two-year gap between Deadpool and Deadpool 2, but Deadpool and Wolverine took 6 years to reach screens, meaning we could be waiting till 2030 for Deadpool 4.

There's every chance we'll see Deadpool on screen again well before Deadpool 4, however. If not in Avengers: Doomsday, then potentially in Avengers: Secret Wars. Doomsday is already bringing several Fox-universe X-Men into the fold, including James Marsden's Cyclops, Patrick Stewart's Professor X, and Ian McKellen's Magneto, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that Wade Wilson could pop up in the movie, which recently revealed an intriguing, universes-colliding synopsis.

Deadpool and Wolverine set up a still unanswered question about Deadpool's future in the MCU: why was Thor crying in mysterious footage from the future? Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth both know. Could the truth finally be revealed in a future Avengers movie or Deadpool 4? One thing you can bet on: Hugh Jackman will return (probably) as Wolverine, with the actor noting he'll "never say never" to returning as the adamantium-clawed Logan for a 12th time.

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 is almost here, and we already have some thoughts (and big dreams) for what is going to be announced this year.

After looking at the SDCC schedule and all the panels that are heading our way, the GamesRadar+ team has come together to create the ideal wishlist of all the movie and TV updates that we are hoping happen in some kind of way over the next few days. Below you'll find a round-up of some of the team's expert opinions, from potential trailers for upcoming Marvel movies to iconic horror adaptations.

Obviously, keep in mind that none of these have been confirmed just yet. We are hoping that they all do, but for now, they are just speculation. The Rings of Power season 3 casting news

The Rings of Power season 3 will be bringing Middle-earth back to San Diego this year ahead of new episodes in November. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will be appearing alongside the cast as we expect more details about just how that time jump will impact the story.

However, we are most excited to see if it's finally revealed who Jamie Campbell Bower is playing. The Stranger Things star joined ahead of season 3 and has been having a lot of fun teasing fans about his connection to the Witch King. Our money is that he may be a little more Elven than audiences have realised though – could he be playing the long-awaited Celeborn? Only time will tell…

Blade Runner 2099 timeline details

Prime Video has kept its long-gestating sequel series Blade Runner 2099 tightly under wraps since filming finished in December 2024. But with a full reveal just days away, it won't be long till we're all elegiacally muttering "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe…"

A first trailer, release date reveal, and plenty of insights from the cast (Michelle Yeoh, Hunter Schafer and Tom Burke star) are all practically guaranteed during the show's SDCC panel. But what we really want to know is how 2099 will connect to Ridley Scott's seminal Blade Runner and Denis Villeneuve's superlative sequel. Will Replicant-born children factor into the story? Given Blade Runner 2049's paradigm-shifting ending, it's the perfect avenue to explore.

A new Lanterns trailer

With the newfangled DCU stumbling slightly after Supergirl failed to soar at the box office, it's suddenly Lanterns' job to right the ship steered by DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. The elevator pitch – a True Detective-style mystery with a grizzled Green Lantern and a fresh-faced hero in training – holds plenty of promise, but the initial trailers showcasing Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre's John Stewart have lacked anything to make rivals Marvel Studios green with envy.

What we immediately want to see from its SDCC showing is a little more in the way of color and personality to help it stand out in a new trailer, as well as a slight taste from those attending on how it connects to the wider DCU. If nothing else, Lanterns' panel needs to be a confident tone-setter for DC's next 12 months.

More Avengers: Doomsday footage

Marvel could have its biggest year ever in 2026 with the release of Avengers: Doomsday, but, if it wants to have any hope of rivalling the shock announcement of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom at this year's SDCC panel, it needs to drop something huge. We are almost certain that means we'll get more Doomsday footage now that the trailer has just dropped.

Plus, if Marvel wants to absolutely blow the roof off, it could also reveal more about its upcoming X-Men movie. Here's hoping we get a cast reveal, especially with rumors swirling that Adam Driver is set to play Magneto.

A Silo spin-off

Silo season 4 is already confirmed, but we are greedy and hoping for news of a potential spin-off series during Apple TV's panel. Author of the Silo books, Hugh Howey, mentioned during a Reddit AMA that he has plans for another trilogy that follows Silo 40 "from before the events of WOOL to after DUST", so there is a chance here, folks.

We will say it is still a long shot, given that we've no word on these new books yet. But announcing whether we were going to get a spin-off and planting the seeds ahead of the show's final season would be a smart move and would also drum up excitement for Howey's new trilogy. It would be a win-win scenario, so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

A Carrie trailer

Horror legend Mike Flanagan is putting the boo in Ballroom 20, as the filmmaker makes his San Diego Comic-Con debut to tease his upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's beloved 1974 novel Carrie. The horror masterpiece has been adapted many times for film, but Flanagan's series, set to hit Prime Video just in time for Halloween, will explore the telekinetic teen's troubled time at high school over eight episodes.

Prime Video has already released first-look images and the official synopsis. Given how much information is already out there, we expect to see the first trailer at SDCC 2026. Deadline reports that the panel will include an "exclusive look at the series, behind-the-scenes insights, and a special announcement." Might we get a glimpse at the iconic prom scene? Or maybe King himself makes an appearance? However, we do know that Flanagan will be joined on stage by stars Summer Howell, Samantha Sloyan, Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard.

If you weren't already planning on taking a trip to the movie theater this weekend to see The Odyssey, then you might want to think again, as a new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has been released, but you can only see it on the big screen.

The new trailer, which has been leaked online, offers a deeper look at Tom Holland's Peter Parker as he navigates a world where no one knows who he really is, including his best friend Ned and his girlfriend MJ. The video contains a flashback to Parker's budding relationships in Homecoming, Far From Home, and finally No Way Home, when he promised MJ he would come find her after her memory was wiped. But in Brand New Day, it looks like he's still working up the courage to tell her the truth.

It makes sense that Sony would choose to show the final trailer in cinemas, as many Spider-Man fans will be going to see Holland and Zendaya in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which has just hit screens. With the ancient Greek epic now out in theaters, there are only two more weeks to wait until we see Holland swap Telemachus' spacious villa in Ithaca for Parker's cramped New York City apartment.

Later in the trailer, Trammell Tillman's character warns Spidey of a new threat "that could be anyone." In the next frame, Spider-Man is fighting Scorpion and says, "Are you sure you want to do this, Scorpion?" to which the villain replies, "You think I'm Scorpion?" This confirms what past trailers have teased: that Brand New Day's villain is some kind of invisible mind-controller using other comic book baddies as their puppets.

Many fans believe that the villain in question is mutant Jean Grey, who may or may not be played by Stranger Things star Sadie Sink. Grey is one of the most powerful Marvel heroes of all time, with telepathic and telekinetic abilities. The future member fo the X-Men has also been known to shift to the dark side every now and again, becoming a hub for dark energy, as we saw in the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand and 2016's Dark Phoenix.

With that in mind, Grey may be the mastermind behind Brand New Day's antagonistic army, including Boomerang, The Hand, and more. However, the Brand New Day synopsis teases a villain that "no one can see," and Holland has confirmed that the villain is still very much a secret. With that on top of Sink's mystery character and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, who seems to be going full-on Savage Hulk in the new trailer, Parker really has his work cut out for him this time.

After decades of superhero movies and shows dominating our screens, it's easy to forget why we fell in love with the comic book world in the first place, but a new teaser for Spider-Man: Brand New Day reminds us what the genre is really about.

In a new video created by stop motion artist Angelink Films over on Instagram, we see a Spider-Man figurine shooting webs and flying through the air before he faces off with a Punisher action figure. This is the usual kind of content the artist and superhero fan makes. But right at the end of the clip, we are treated to an appearance from Tom Holland and Bernthal, holding their respective figurines. Check out the video below.

Now, although the new video doesn't really give anything away in terms of plot details for Brand New Day, it has to be one of our favourite teasers yet. The clip captures the childlike wonder and nostalgia of the superhero genre, reminding us of when we were children and first got into Marvel comics, movies, and toys.

Marvel fans seem to agree. "My 12-year-old self is screaming with joy for this!," commented one fan, and another added, "This is quite possibly the coolest thing I’ve ever seen."

This is not the first time Brand New Day has leaned into including superhero fans in movie marketing. Sony decided to release the first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer in short snippets posted by a number of content creators across social media. Tom Holland then unveiled the final product at the top of the Empire State Building, where he was joined by a bunch of Spider-Man-mad kids.

However, aside from the cutesy marketing, Spider-Man: Brand New Day won't be all sunshine and rainbows. Holland's fourth Spider-Man movie finds Peter Parker in his darkest era yet. After Doctor Strange wiped the whole world's memory of who Spider-Man really is, Parker has no friends, family, or girlfriend, so he throws himself fully into crimefighting. But when a new villain poses a huge threat to the city, Spidey has no choice but to suit up and save the day once again.

Alongside Holland and Bernthal, Brand New Day welcomes back Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, and adds Mark Ruffalo as Brce Banner/ Hulk, and Sadie Sink in a mystery role, although fans are convinced she is playing Jean Grey.

Thanks to the Thunderbolts post-credits scene and the major cast announcement, we already know that Florence Pugh's Yelena is set to play a major role in Avengers: Doomsday. However, before she returns to the big screen in December, it sounds as though the anti-hero may dip into the MCU a little sooner than expected.

"If you're a fan of Yelena, wait until Avengers: Doomsday, Yelena plays a big part in that. But if you don't want to wait until then, you might see Yelena a little bit sooner in the movies,” said Marvel head Kevin Feige at Shanghai Expo in China, after a fan dressed as the hero joined him on stage. The clip has since been posted on Twitter.

However, the only other Marvel movie due to be released before Doomsday is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will hit the big screen at the end of July, 2026. So, that means that in addition to Jon Bernthal's Punisher, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner aka Hulk, and Sadie Sink's mystery character, Pugh's former spy may also be in the mix.

It is important to note that Marvel Studios has yet to confirm whether Pugh will appear in Brand New Day. But, considering the Marvel timeline, Brand New Day may lead directly into Doomsday, meaning Yelena could appear in a post-credits teaser that sets up the new Avengers movie. The only other Marvel Phase 6 title set to release before Doomsday is TV show VisionQuest.

Feige's comment adds yet another layer of mystery to the upcoming Spidey movie. Despite the film hitting cinemas in just over two weeks, we still don't know who the movie's main big bad is. The first Spider-Man Brand New Day trailer gave us our first look at baddies Scorpion, Boomerang, and The Hand, but the new synopsis teased a villain that no one can see. Who could that be? Plus, we still don't know who Sadie Sink is playing, despite fans being convinced that the star will suit up as Jean Grey.

Much like Marvel's tactic with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, DC Studios is keeping its cards close to its chest when it comes to The Batman: Part 2's villain, but an old post from writer Mattson Tomlin could hint at who it could be.

Although it's only a little over a year before Robert Pattinson's caped crusader returns to our screens in The Batman 2, we still don't really know what the highly anticipated sequel will entail, or who Gotham's new big bad is. However, rumors of Scarlett Johansson's mystery role have started to swirl online, with multiple unofficial DC news pages stating that the star could be playing a grounded take on Poison Ivy.

Now, even though we must take this rumour with a grain of salt, co-writer Tomlin may have hinted at the role almost one year earlier. Back in July 2025, Tomlin shared the first Batman comic he ever read over on Twitter, Batman #181, published in June 1966. The comic marks Poison Ivy's DC Comics debut as she sparks trouble between Batman and Robin. Many DC fans think this could have been a sly hint at the upcoming installment, which makes a lot of sense now.

So, could Poison Ivy make an appearance? We haven't seen the villain on the big screen since Uma Thurman brought her to life in the 1997 movie Batman and Robin. The character has since appeared in multiple animated DC films and TV shows, and notably in the Batman Arkham games. However, if the villain were to enter Matt Reeves' moody Batman universe, we have a feeling she would look a lot different from Thurman's electric and eccentric villain.

The sequel may feature a string of DC baddies, as in addition to Poison Ivy rumours, Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry have also been cast in mystery roles, with many believing Stan will play sadistic serial killer Victor Zsasz and Henry will suit up as politician turned Two-Face, Harvey Dent. Behind-the-scenes snaps posted by Reeves also suggest that the criminal organisation known as the Court of Owls may play a major part in the new film.

Alongside Pattinson's Batman, the only confirmed characters for now are Andy Serkis's Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb, Jeffrey Wright's Jim Gordon, Jayme Lawson as Bella Real, and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez.

A new Japanese TV spot for Spider-Man has arrived, and it sees Peter Parker take on Savage Hulk... and it may or may not be with some help from a fan-favorite villain.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, Peter and Bruce face off. We know from previous trailers that Hulk is being controlled by whoever Sadie Sink's character is, which is more or less what turns him into the angriest and most mindless version of himself (and we know that it's Savage Hulk specifically thanks to a line of Brand New Day tie-in toys). Perhaps the most curious thing, however, is what Peter is using to fight Hulk: a weapon attached to his arm that appears to shoot electric currents. This looks like the gauntlet used by none other than Shocker, who has been rumored to reappear in Brand New Day for quite some time now.

In the comics, both Jackson Brice and Herman Schultz have taken on the Shocker mantle. Both characters appear as associates of Adrian Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming, with Toomes accidentally killing Brice and therefore making Herman the new Shocker. Does the (potential) appearance of Shocker also mean that Adrian Toomes could be returning...? The last we saw him was in the post-credits scene of Morbius, where he was transported to Earth-688B (the universe where all of the Sony Spider-Man characters live), so we do know he's out of prison. We'll just have to wait and see.

The Marvel Studios panel was the main event on Saturday. The studio headed back to Hall H this year, ahead of the release of Avengers: Doomsday later in 2026. Elsewhere, Prime Video hosted a panel on Carrie and DC movie Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall. Apple TV also hosted a panel showcasing its line-up, including Silo and Widow's Bay. Sunday, July 26

There's not a whole lot happening at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday, July 26 this year. Hall H, Ballroom 20, the Indigo Ballroom are all closed on this day, but it is technically the last day of the convention so there are a few more panels knocking around. In Room 6BCF at 1pm, there's a Pokémon appreciation panel and in Room 6A, there's a panel dedicated to Star Trek comics too at 1.30pm.

We've been waiting a long time for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but the latest update is a very promising sign that the movie is inching closer.

The film was originally set to be released in 2024, but is now set for a 2027 release instead.

"We are deep, deep in it," producer Christopher Miller told Empire magazine during an appearance on The Empire Podcast with co-producer Phil Lord.

The film is also being released in IMAX, and Miller added that they would soon be previewing the footage in that expanded aspect ratio. "We're actually going today to the IMAX headquarters to see what the footage looks like at scale, and make sure that it has the resolution that it needs to look gorgeous," he explained.

"We're chugging away in the edit room with the team, and it's coming together really well. It's a lot of movie, and a lot to do," he added.

Naturally, it sounds like quite the undertaking. "You got to keep doing something that hasn't been done before. That's all you got to do," he joked. "Easy!"

Across the Spider-Verse released back in 2023, and it ended with quite the brutal cliffhanger: Miles Morales is in the wrong universe, facing off against a Prowler version of himself.

"We put the most pressure on ourselves," Miller said earlier this year. "There's no one that puts more pressure on us than ourselves, wanting to outdo ourselves each time and see things that you haven't seen before and make it feel like something you've never experienced before. And so, trying to get something that is as worthy as the previous two has been the driver."

The Batman 2 screenwriter Mattson Tomlin has one of the most anticipated upcoming comic book movies in production, but despite this fact, Tomlin says he's fielding more offers for video game adaptations than superhero fare this year.

Speaking on Twitter, Tomlin – the co-writer of The Batman Part 2 alongside director Matt Reeves – responded to a question about his Mega Man adaptation falling by the wayside by noting that the project could come back around because video game adaptations are now all the rage in Tinseltown.

"Hollywood is sort of making a shift from being comic book obsessed to video game obsessed," Tomlin says. "So I wouldn’t be surprised if [Mega Man] sees the light of day in some form, but after so much time gone by, it’s unlikely I’ll have anything to do with it."

Tomlin further clarified his reasoning in another response: "My point of view is also born out of the fact that I am getting at least 5x more offers for video game adaptations than comic book adaptations this year." While Tomlin is speaking from anecdotal experience rather than offering empirical evidence of a sweeping change in Hollywood, the fact that video game adaptations are of increasing importance to moviedom is plain to see.

Already this year, Return to Silent Hill, Iron Lung, Exit 8 and Mortal Kombat 2 have all released in theaters, to varying degrees of success. Still to come are Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie, Street Fighter, and anime shows Sekiro: No Defeat and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2. Truly, the video game adaptation boom is upon us. Even the likes of A24 are getting in on the trend: the indie studio has a big-budget Elden Ring movie currently filming from Alex Garland, and A Quiet Place: Day One's Michael Sarnoski is adapting Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, though it'll be a different story from the games.

In comparison, comic book cinema is at perhaps its lowest ebb in almost two decades. Supergirl just bombed, making less than Morbius and Joker 2 in its opening weekend, and this month's Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the first Marvel movie in a year, though don't be surprised if it kills at the box office.

As for The Batman 2, the highly anticipated sequel sits outside James Gunn's DCU Chapter One as an Elseworlds entry. The movie is currently in pre-production, with filming set to begin imminently ahead of a 2027 release. Matt Reeves recently lifted the lid on the movie's cast, including Marvel stars Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson, but we still don't know for sure who they're playing.

Tom Holland says the new Spidey suit is an homage to all of the live-action Spider-Mans... and this makes me even more stoked for Brand New Day.

"When we decided that we're going to make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we said, what if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey and Andrew's designs because my Peter Parker had met those guys. So we kind of created a Spider-Child of all three costumes," Holland explains in a new behind-the-scenes video.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton points out that we can see the "human" beneath the costume, meaning there's no face shield underneath the mask that gives it that weird jawline (and further conceals Spider-Man's identity). You can watch the video below.

With a new suit comes new, uh, features, seeing as Peter Parker can shoot his own webs now rather than rely on web-technology that he created himself (much like Tobey Maguire's Spidey). In the newest trailer, Peter goes to none other than Dr. Bruce Banner for help with his suddenly changing powers, though Bruce warns him that they kinda can't be contained (and he would know, given that he's the Hulk and all).

New suit, new powers, and a brand new villain (who is definitely Sadie Sink), though we still don't know if she's playing Jean Grey or a Dark Phoenix variation or even Madelyne Prior, or what.

DC fans won't have to wait too long to see Milly Alcock after Supergirl, as DC producer Lars P. Winther says she will play a big role in the next DCU film after Man of Tomorrow.

"So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that," said Wither to The Hollywood Reporter.

Winther didn't confirm which project is due to be released after the Superman sequel. However, DC boss James Gunn has already announced a stack of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters movies that are yet to be dated, including The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, The Authority, and a Wonder Woman feature. Who knows, maybe we will get a superwoman squad, and Alcock can help Diana Prince take down a DC comic book villain.

Before then, Alcock will return in Man of Tomorrow, and it sounds as though the new Supergirl movie somehow sets it up. "Man of Tomorrow, which is what we’re shooting now, [Alcock] is in that movie," confirmed Winther. "Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based."

Based on the Woman of Tomorrow comic book series, Supergirl finds Kara Zor-El in a rut, coping with her dark past by partying every night in space, with her only friend being her dog Kyrpto. However, when tragedy strikes too close to home, she must join forces with an unlikely companion for an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice. The movie also stars Jason Momoa as Lobo, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem.

The new movie includes a cameo from Superman star David Corenswet, but Supergirl director Craig Gillespie confirmed that "It is a standalone film." Winther added, "We’re trying to build our DCU and that Superman family… We are not just trying to do what the previous regime did and dig in about the same characters. We are trying to get some of the newer characters in. So we want to base it with Superman and felt that [Kara] was the next best character to build that story."

After Supergirl, the next DCU movie to hit screens will be Clayface in September 2026, followed by Man of Tomorrow in summer 2027.

Supergirl is about to fly into theaters as one of the several new superhero movies arriving this year. However, according to its director, Craig Gillespie, the new DCU film will stand out and might even help tackle superhero fatigue.

Based on Tom King's 'Woman of Tomorrow' comics, this new version of the Supergirl story is pretty different from how Kara Zor-El has been presented on screen before. Milly Alcock's heroine is a bit of a wild child who loves partying and shirks away from responsibility, before her dog Krypto is put in danger and she must change her ways.

"I think there's talk of superhero fatigue and some stuff that's been formulaic in the past, and when I read this script, there was nothing that was formulaic in it," Gillespie tells GamesRadar+ about the new approach to the character.

"It was this incredibly complex character that Ana [Nogueira] had written based off of Tom King's novel, 'Woman of Tomorrow.' She's complex, she's flawed, she's an anti-hero that's rebellious, and she's been through trauma – and that's bizarrely such human traits that you can recognize within yourself.

"Instead of having this hero on a pedestal with perfect hair and makeup and everything in place, she's kind of a hot mess in the best way. To be able to tell that story and twist the genre in that way to make her more human, that's what was exciting to me."

Another stand-out part of Gillespie's vision for Supergirl is how much attention to detail is in each frame. The movie heads to several different alien planets and each one has been completely fleshed out with practical creatures, sets, and an incredible amount of care.

"I wanted these places to feel tactile, to feel dirty, dusty," he tells us of this approach. "I wanted to feel the poverty, the destruction, which meant that the amount of dirt and layers on the clothing and the sets and the graffiti, I mean, it was so much texture in there that I was excited about.

"Typically you don't really see those in sci-fi films, everything looks like it was brand new and just polished, and they just came from the laundromat every time. So to be able to really lean into that, that decay, was amazingly exciting but it was so much work."

Elsewhere, Gillespie also opened up to us about James Gunn's notes on a particular character and what Superman star David Corenswet brought when he turned up on set.

Supergirl may be based on the beloved comic book mini-series, Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, but there are some big differences in the adaptation. One of the biggest changes is villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, just referred to as Krem in the DCU movie, who looks very different from his comic book counterpart.

While in the novel, the Brigand looks pretty human, as we've seen from the Supergirl trailers, the movie went in a different direction. Krem is covered in facial piercings and loves leather, looking way more Mad Max than the original.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, the star behind the character, Matthias Schoenaerts, reveals that he loves the look, adding what he thinks of the big changes.

"That's the first thing that Craig showed me, because I, of course, I was familiar with the source material, and I was like, 'Okay, so how are we going to blend that in?,' and then he showed me his idea, and I was like, 'Wow, this is fantastic,'" the actor recalls. "It was pretty crazy to walk in, because, as magnificent as it looked, it wasn't the easiest to run in, for example, but it looked fantastic."

According to Schoenaerts, the revamped look was also one of several changes made from the comics. "I think that's a fun part of this movie, is that, of course, story-wise, it's very much related to the source material, but the writer and Craig [Gillespie, director] added new components and elements to it, so that it's still fresh," he adds. "Even though it's very close to the source material, and so people are going to have the satisfaction, they will still be surprised because it's brought to you with a new swing and a new flavor."

Coming from a long line of DC villains on screen, Krem stands apart in the new movie. The actor played him several different ways on set at the request of director Craig Gillespie to keep him unpredictable in the final cut.

"I've seen a lot of the films so I know what the legacy and the heritage is, and I'm like, 'Okay, I have to bring something new to the table,' and you want to be memorable," Schoenaerts explains.

"I wanted to make him funky and unpredictable, and then back and forth, I wanted to make him an unforgettable madman, your favorite romantic lead," he laughs. "That was what I had in my head, the nightmare romantic lead. I'm like, 'That's my guy.'"

He was a pretty intimidating presence on set too, according to actor Eve Ridley, who plays Ruthye, a young girl whose family is murdered by Krem. Filming those scenes was also the first time she met her co-star in person too.

"It was the worst, no, it was the best, but in a scary way," she tells us. "I am a huge horror fan, and I am proud to say that I love horrors, but this was a different kind of scary. This was like being in the horror movie, the center of it all.

"I was promised to see him out of prosthetics and everything, and out of costume, but did that happen? No. So, the first time I met him, it was my first day shooting and I just saw him walk on the set out of the shadows, this is a huge man with studs on his face and everything. It's the scariest thing I've ever seen in my life, but I mean, I didn't have to act."

Supergirl director Craig Gillespie has spoken about how DC Studios head James Gunn had given him free reign with directing the new DCU movie. However, it turns out that he did have some notes on one particular character: Krypto.

The super-dog featured heavily in Superman and is a huge part of Supergirl too as it follows Kara Zor-El having to go to extreme lengths to save her four-legged best friend. After he's poisoned by the evil Krem, she ends up teaming up with a young girl named Ruthye to find the antidote to save him.

"Krypto would be one of the things that James was the most articulate about," Gillespie tells GamesRadar+, adding that Gunn frequently said to him, "'Oh no, no, no, he wouldn't do that'."

The director adds: "Obviously, it's based on James's dog, so there was some stuff in the bar that you know, maybe where Krypto was paying too much attention, and it'd be like, 'No, I think you got to change that. He wouldn't actually care about that, or he wouldn't do that, or he'd never follow that rule.' I'm like, 'Oh, okay.' So we got some guidelines with Krypto."

It wasn't just Gunn who was involved in the movie either, as his co-CEO Peter Safran was also often on set, according to Krem actor Matthias Schoenaerts. However, it seems he was also pretty hands off with and didn't offer too much advice on bringing the Brigand alien to life.

"Peter was on set quite often," he tells us. "But he gave also a lot of freedom to Craig [Gillespie], so it was mostly Craig and the actors and the DP, Rob Hardy, that was kind of the trinity working [and] having conversations about what to do and how to do it."

Supergirl may be first and foremost Kara Zor-El's introduction to the DCU, but her cousin Superman makes a few appearances too. The latest superhero movie, and the second in the new revamped franchise, stars Milly Alcock as Supergirl, who reluctantly teams up with a young girl on a mission of revenge when her dog Krypto is poisoned.

However, as well as focusing on their mission, the movie also dives deeper into Supergirl's backstory – and how she first met her cousin, Kal-El on Earth. David Corenswet reprises his role as Clark Kent in the film and, according to director Craig Gillespie, he improvised a lot of his dialogue.

"The wonderful thing with David, it was more that when he came in, he was so aware of his character," Gillespie tells GamesRadar+ of the Superman scenes. "You know, in that opening scene with him, where he meets Milly, was the first day of the shoot. It was the first day I was working with him, and it was wild to see him in his superhero outfit turn up, and he immediately started improvising."

He added that he improvised some of the funniest lines in the exchange, including some quips about Kara's bag and whether she was into bowling. "That was all improvised, and Milly's speaking in a different language, and then I threw out to Milly, 'Why don't you ask him why he's in his underwear?'," he laughs.

"They immediately got into this banter that was wonderful, and you could feel their dynamic out of the gate," Gillespie adds of their relationship in the movie. "It was just happening on the set in a way, it's like I think David was in such control of his character, so it was beautiful."

Tom Holland has sorta kinda unleashed another spoiler, and this time it's about the spell that made the entire world forget Peter Parker.

"I think no one remembers that I'm Spider-Man apart from one," Holland said during an interview with IGN when asked if any of the Avengers remember that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. He starts to say "person" before Zendaya quickly cuts him off and says, "Nobody remembers that you're Peter Parker. They know Spider-Man. Spider-Man is Peter Parker."

Holland continues: "They know Spider-Man. They just don't know... one person [knows]." You can watch the clip below.

Naturally, my guess is Doctor Strange given he's the one who did the spell that made everyone forget in the first place, and quite possibly the only one who can reverse it. It did look like Holland was about to spill the beans on exactly who before Zendaya swooped him and stopped him... which is on par with his long history of accidental Marvel spoiler reveals.

His crimes include revealing that Spider-Man: Homecoming would be turned into a trilogy, accidentally sharing the Avengers: Infinity War poster on Instagram live, and telling a packed audience that Spider-Man gets blipped at a screening for Infinity War. He also apparently spoiled all of the Avengers movies for Zendaya, which doesn't surprise me, either.

Although Marvel is bringing back the bulk of the original X-Men stars for Avengers: Doomsday, the studio has left a few names out, which Jean Grey star Famke Janssen doesn't seem too happy about.

"I think they made a mistake, but hey, who am I? I’m just a little me who thinks that," said Janssen to Nerdtropolis at Spacecon 2026. The star says she is being asked about the movie all of the time, promising she isn't lying about the fact that she isn't returning. "I am so bad at keeping secrets," added Janessen. "It’s all on my face. You right away will read it."

Janssen played telepathic mutant Jean Grey, aka Phoenix, in the original X-Men movie. The 2000 movie also starred Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, who are all set to return in Doomsday, as well as Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. The only other OG star left out is Storm actor Halle Berry.

It is not clear why Janssen wasn't asked to return, as she was part of the franchise for quite some time. After the first movie, the star then returned for X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand, and also made appearances in The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The only reason we can think of is that there may soon be a new Jean Grey added to the MCU. Many Marvel fans think Sadie Sink is playing the mutant in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. If that is true, having two Jean Greys in the mix could be confusing, which might explain Janssen's absence. Plus, Brand New Day is set right before Doomsday, so whatever happens in the new Spidey movie may directly affect the new Avengers flick, including whatever chaos Sink's mysterious character may cause.

Doomsday is set to bring a long list of Marvel heroes back into the fold. The X-Men join the Thunderbolts*, the Fantastic Four, Chris Evans' Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, the Wakandans, and many more as a new threat emerges in the shape of Doctor Doom, who just so happens to be played by Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr.

Welp, Tom Holland's webhead is certainly going to have his hands full now. Fresh footage from Spider-Man: Brand New Day has revealed yet another villain is joining the cast.

As revealed in a new TV spot, the hard-headed bad guy Ramrod makes a dash for Spidey and runs straight into a brick wall. Ouch. See the headache-inducing moment for yourself below.

While we don't exactly expect Ramrod to cause Spidey too much trouble, the latest villain appearance continues director Destin Daniel Cretton's trend of paying homage to various classic Spider-Man comic covers.

Already, we've had dalliances with Tarantula and Boomerang glimpsed in trailers, each aping a classic Marvel cover. Now, Ramrod's attack mirrors that of Amazing Spider-Man #221. If you've got that collecting dust in your attic, it might suddenly be worth a lot more after today.

In our opinion, we expect Tarantula, Boomerang, Ramrod (and potentially other C-list villains) to form part of a montage to show how Spidey has kept New York safe in the years since No Way Home.

Unfortunately, the tangled web of baddies grows ever wider. Spider-Man: Brand New Day's synopsis teases an unseen, powerful figure up to no good and lurking in the shadows. There's also the small matter of who Sadie Sink is playing – with Jean Grey among one of our big theories for Brand New Day's mystery villain. Michael Mando's Scorpion still has plenty of sting in his tail, too. The question remains: will there be enough room on the Raft for them all?

Soon, the second live-action movie in James Gunn's DCU will fly onto the big screen. But just because Supergirl introduces a new version of the Man of Steel's cousin, doesn't mean you have to go in blind.

Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the movie follows the young supe as she reluctantly joins forces with Jason Momoa's Lobo and sets off on an interstellar journey to seek justice against those who destroyed her home planet. The movie marks the second time we have seen Alcock suit as the hero after making a small cameo in last year's Superman, but will introduce a whole stack of new characters, too.

So, with this being the new Supergirl's first solo movie, do you need to do any DCU Chapter One homework before sitting down to watch the new movie? Well, kind of. Below, we break down which movies and TV shows you need to have seen before the big day, and a few extra titles to catch up on if you have time.

The DC movies and shows to watch before Supergirl

Superman

This won't come as a huge surprise, but it will be helpful to have seen Superman before going into Supergirl. Judging by the trailers, there doesn't seem to be a lot of crossover between the two movies, but Superman gives us an idea of the type of relationship the straight-edged hero has with his boundary-pushing cousin. Right at the end of Superman, Kara crash-lands on Earth to pick up her dog, Krypto. The supe was partying on nearby planets, while her canine had been causing trouble on Earth.

Straight away, we can see that Kara doesn't share the same moral compass as her older kin. But we have a feeling she might buck up her ideas in her titular movie, as she is forced to step up and protect what she loves most. David Coresnwet's Superman will make an appearance in the new movie, as the Supergirl trailer shows him checking up on his cousin and giving her some stern advice.

Superman also gives us the chance to get to know Krypto before Supergirl. The new movie goes back to when the pup was first given to Kara, as well as giving us a deeper look at his relationship with his even more chaotic owner.

Past Supergirl movies and TV shows

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, they completely wiped the slate clean, starting afresh with new actors and storylines. So, you really don't have to have seen any DC project before 2025's Superman. But if you would like to get to know other versions of Supergirl and perhaps compare them to Alcock's take on the hero, you can start with the first solo Supergirl movie released in 1984, starring Helen Slater.

Before Alcock, the last star to take flight as the hero was Sasha Calle in the 2023 movie The Flash. Calle was supposed to take on her own solo movie after that, but the project was scrapped when Gunn arrived. However, Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira, who was also writing the DCEU Supergirl movie, says that the two movies are "completely different," and that "nothing carried over from the DCEU project to the DCU movie.

In terms of television, we have seen many iterations of the young supe over the years. However, the most notable is CBS's Supergirl series, which ran from 2015 to 2025 as part of the Arrowverse. The show follows Melissa Benoist's Supergirl as she flees the newly destroyed Krypton and lands on Earth to protect National City. However, we don't see the new film following the same premise. The DCU's Supergirl is mostly set in space, and Alcock's hero has vengeance on her mind, leaving being an Earthly hero to her cousin.
