Over Memorial Day weekend, Epic Games revealed a first look at Unreal Engine 6 in a bit of an unexpected manner. Rather than unveiling the hotly anticipated upgrade at a tech or game developer conference (one of those just took place a few months ago), it instead showed off the new engine with a brief trailer at a Rocket League tournament of all possible places.

During the Paris Major of the Rocket League Championship Series, Epic Games and Psyonix, the developers behind the hit rocket-powered car sports game, seized upon the moment to tease the game's fans about the title's future. The brief snippet shown at the tournament, totaling all of about 35 seconds and captured in-game, bears many of the hallmark tenets of Rocket League iconography: the color-coded goal, the green of the pitch, the cybernetic cage around the arena, and even the ball that players are trying to knock around for points.

Then, a car the fidelity of which no Rocket League player has ever seen or sported pulls up. To call the vehicle shiny would be doing it a disservice; It is almost distractingly shimmery and glossy. The blades of grass underneath its tires are as photorealistic as it gets and it then cuts to a car spiraling through the air while propelled by rockets, leaving behind a bright blue trail filled with high-definition particulates. Afterwards, the teaser cuts to a glimpse of a car customization screen showing off other shiny paint jobs that'll be available.

Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, has spoken about Unreal Engine 6 in the past. In 2024, he shared how the hope was to build games as a "persistent universe" and bring tools uniquely built for Fortnite to a greater deal of games outside of Epic. This work was already evidently underway with a collaboration with Disney at the time–which may or may not be a Disney extraction shooter reportedly coming soon–which makes it all the more surprising that Rocket League is the title that the company has used to provide a first look at it. Even the aforementioned Fortnite would've made more sense, but alas, here we are.

Our actual first glimpse at Unreal Engine 6 in this teaser does little to clear up much of the language Sweeney was using to describe the goals and ambitions of the upgraded toolset, but it sure does look like a generational leap forward in fidelity, especially for Rocket League, which was developed on and has been running Unreal Engine 3 this entire time.

The Rocket League teaser, no matter how short, is certainly a strong showcase for Unreal Engine 6, even if it offers no hint as to when it is actually arriving, let alone when Rocket League would be receiving said upgrade. It stands to reason though that if it's being shown off now, the first Unreal Engine 6 games could be coming to market within the next year or so, largely putting its arrival in line with the 2027/2028 projections that have been spoken of and rumored till now.

Unreal Engine 6's arrival is a huge deal. Often thought of as one of the de facto game engines powering the creation of modern games (alongside Unity) each iteration of Unreal Engine has largely represented a tectonic shift for the games industry. Unreal Engine 5, which has been available to game developers since 2022, has now powered the likes of titanic games like 2025's game of the year Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as well as Arc Raiders, and will likely continue to be the default for some time to come while Unreal Engine 6 is slowly made available over the years to come.

Just over a month after launch, one million people have decided the chaotic PvP indie golf game Super Battle Golf is worth their eight dollars, and the developers are as surprised as anyone.

Super Battle Golf, which I previously described as a marriage between Super Smash Bros. and Mario Golf, was a massive hit right out of the gate, quickly becoming one of Steam's best-selling games of the year so far and garnering "very positive" reviews.

The premise is enticingly simple: it's golf, but instead of the turn-based PvP traditionally governing rounds between friends, everyone's trying to land their balls into the hole all at once... and the general rule about not shooting your opponents with rocket launchers doesn't apply here. There are are guns, lasers, spring boots, landmines, and other gloriously effective tools at your disposal to make sure you score first.

When I wrote about Super Battle Golf at the start of the month, it had sold 500,000 copies, an immense achievement that the developer has now doubled just a few weeks later. In a Steam update, developer Brimstone celebrates one million copies sold, friendships be damned.

"Woah! Hey! Hello! Super Battle Golf has sold over 1 million copies since we launched on February 19th! That is way over 9000," the developer quips. "So many friendships ended, so many golf carts sent flying into the sky, so many balls shot away from the hole right as it's about to score."

Brimstone says the milestone is "bonkers" and teases a new content update alongside "amazing news" to be announced on April 2. I like the idea that the news may have been ready for reveal on April 1, but no one would've believed it.

1. Bad Bunny

Every year, the community fizzes with excitement while awaiting WhatTheStatus’s early CAWs. Known as ‘Status’ for short, this year the iconic creator already has a great-looking Bad Bunny to add to your download list. The Puerto Rican played February's Super Bowl half-time show – but funnily enough, no-one mentioned that he’s also a former WWE 24/7 Champion.

2. Bravo Americano

Dudley grappler Tyler Bate is featured on the WWE 2K26 roster, but only under his real name – ignoring the way he’s adapted to the masked ‘Bravo Americano’ gimmick since it was introduced last summer. 3. Chris Jericho

Y2K has long been rumoured for a WWE return after being a prominent part of the AEW Fight Forever roster. Yet it didn’t happen at the Royal Rumble, and Elimination Chamber did see one notable grappler make the switch – but it was Danhausen, not Jericho. End the wait with this realistic CAW. It was made by Bhangra22man, with help from Esmec, Valoween, ibudsmoves, and harvaddy.

4. Edge

Another WWE-turned-AEW icon here – but while we might see Jericho in WWE before 2026 is out, there’s zero chance of the same being said for Edge. Thankfully WhatsThatStatus has stepped in, with this hand-made creation looking just as good as the Rated-R Superstar’s DLC character from Fight Forever.

5. Jeff Hardy

In years past, we’ve not featured DLC characters – or WWE 2K26 Ringside Pass, as it’s now known – in this esteemed round-up, as doing so felt like the waste of a roster spot. This CAW by Valoween is too good to ignore though. It features an all-white outfit without face paint, and a black outfit with pink face paint. Hardy is officially being added to the 2K26 roster in July – and this will more than tide you over ’til then.

6. Jon Moxley

Two grapplers in a row on this list for Valoween, with his interpretation of the man once known as Dean Ambrose also worthy of a CAW slot. Don’t forget that the number of those has doubled to 200 this year, making all the names found here even more tempting. Add Ambrose and you can reunite him with Shield members Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns for maximum carnage.

7. Lainey Reid

Reid’s story is a curious one. Her Fatal Influence stablemates Jacy Jayne and Fallon Henley are both on the roster, and Lainey herself was ‘leaked’ back in January by a Twitter source who got last year’s DLC spot on. But she’s not on the disc or in the Ringside Pass, making this endgame3702 effort your primary means of adding her.

8. Paige

Whether you know her has a Paige from WWE or Saraya in AEW, Norwich’s greatest wrestling export is a household name twice over – and was portrayed by Florence Pugh in the brilliant Fighting With My Family, too. Decent career, that. If you want her in your game under either of those monickers, grab this model by KungFuCAWS – with a moveset curated by Kiel Thy Wolf.

9. Rayo Americano

Earlier on we promised even more back-up for El Grande Americano, and here it is. Rayo Americano is the third gimmick of Pete Dunne’s WWE run – as well as grappling under his real name, he was also known as Butch in the Brawling Brutes. It’s proved hilarious, with both Dunne and New Catch Republic partner Tyler Bate truly throwing themselves into the roles. Like Bravo Americano, this is the work of astrotwins_2.

10. Ronda Rousey

The most stunning wrestling surprise of 2026 – so far, anyway – was former WWE and UFC champion Rousey turning up in AEW, with minimal speculation ahead of her shock debut. It means she’s out of this series for a little while, and will likely be a CAW mainstay for the foreseeable future instead. Kudos to KungFuCAWS for his take on ‘Rowdy’ Ronda, with moveset help from Big Righteous.

11. Sasha Banks

We’re back in WhatsTheStatus territory with this incredibly lifelike model of Sasha Banks – or Merceded Mone, as she’s reinvented herself in AEW. She’s not appeared in WWE since 2022, but many fans still consider her one of the greatest female wrestlers of the last decade – alongside Four Horsewomen comrades Bayley, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch.

12. Saquon Shugars

It’s rare that the WWE 2K community agrees on anything, but this year they’re united in lamenting the biggest omissions from the Ringside Pass: dominant NXT faction DarkState. Along with Dion Lennox, Osiris Griffin, and Cutler James, Shugars has demonstrated serious potential since debuting last year. Bring him into your game with this Bhangra22man CAW, made with help from Esmec, Valoween, and Phsylum.

13. Sting

The most downloaded wrestler in Community Creations has already surpassed the 35,000 mark – and is a true icon of the WCW years. Fitting, then, that this Sting model was made by WCW-Eraz. It features two distinct outfits, along with Sting’s iconic black-and-white face paint – and the trusty creator also has a Sting with red face paint available separately. WWE 2K26 fans are discovering just how much of a grind the game's new battle pass system is after developer Visual Concepts replaced the traditional DLC model with it.

WWE 2K – like with all publisher 2K's yearly sports games, for the most part – is really into asking you to give it more money. For years, it has had its own spin on EA Sports' Ultimate Team card game – seen in the likes of EA Sports FC and Madden – which focuses on opening virtual booster packs, and on top of that, locks certain wrestlers that can be used in the regular modes behind random drops.

Last year, publisher 2K also introduced The Island, a pseudo MMO mode where you can pay in-game currency to buff your wrestler up, effectively creating a pay-to-win mode. This year, however, the WWE's nickel-and-diming has gotten even worse with the new WWE 2K26 Ringside Pass, or battle pass, of which there will be six drops over the course of the year.

Considering how bad just one Ringside Pass is, six is going to be ridiculous. For starters, the free track of Ringside Pass Season 1 has all of the old WWE Legends, belts, and arenas you would have previously been able to unlock through an in-game shop, or an "unlock everything" booster DLC. Players have also reported weird restrictions in the Ringside Pass, which seems to make any customization to a match – down to choosing what weapons appear under your ring – void it out and grant you zero progress.

There's also the issue of time. I played 30 hours of WWE 2K26 over its review period, and I barely made it past the halfway point of the 40-tier pass. YouTuber ThisGenGaming reports that they played the MyRise story two-and-a-half times, all of Showcase mode (which can't be repeated), a chapter of the Island, and a full segment of World Tour in MyFaction, on top of 40-50 regular matches to reach level 40, and the whole process took them about 40 hours. But you could also pay $77 per season to get tier skips, if you want to access content you've already paid for more quickly.

Needless to say, players on the WWEGames subreddit aren't happy. One user reports they haven't even hit Tier 2 after four Showcase matches and a regular match using an XP booster item.

"All I can do is laugh," their post reads. "I paid $150 for extra content and they want me to burn myself out just to use it? I have a job not to mention a life outside of WWE games I probably play 100-200 hours AT MOST every yr.. This is honestly one of the scummiest forms of corporate greed I've seen in a while, and the only thing worse are the 'just play the game' people defending it."

I'm not a blind battle pass hater, but this is one of the single worst ones I've ever seen. At least with the likes of Fortnite, you're only missing out on cosmetics, not full playable characters that would've been unlocked instantly after purchase any other year.

Plus, the WWE 2K26 DLC is looking to be one of the best in the series to date, with the likes of Earthquake, Brian Pillman, Bam Bam Bigelow, and the Hardy Boyz on the list. So what should've been an easy slam dunk for the game has actually become the worst thing about it.

If you're familiar with the process from previous entries in the series, then you may be a bit confused at first when trying to work out how to redeem WWE 2K26 locker codes, as things are a little different this year. To get your rewards:

1. From the main menu, select the Options tab.
2. Scroll down and select the Locker Codes option.
3. Use the text box to enter your code exactly as written.
4. Confirmation will appear of the rewards – if you get an error message, then make sure you've used the correct spelling and the code hasn't expired.

It's not often that you associate wrestling games with time travel, but that's exactly what's required in order to review WWE 2K26. This time last year, predecessor WWE 2K25 scored a highly merited four stars. In the ring, it was up there with all-time classic Fire Pro, offering match after match of immersive back-and-forth action, complemented by myriad smart-yet-tiny details. The one reservation was a continuous, egregious drive to part fans from their cash, via the microtransaction temptations of MyFaction and The Island.

The widespread hope was that the nickel-and-diming would be adjusted, post release. Instead, 2K doubled down. MyFaction pack prices were increased from 9,900 'MFP' to 15,100, encouraging fans to spend real-life money. Monthly 'Smash and Stash' rewards went from bountiful packs to miserly MFP and tokens, encouraging fans to spend real-life money. The popular 'Rabblerouser' badge, which sped up matches (and therefore free MFP) by granting certain wrestlers a fast finisher, was nerfed in a patch, encouraging fans to spend real-life money. Retro versions of Triple H, Drew McIntyre and AJ Styles required numerous high-value cards to unlock, encouraging… uh, you get the picture.

The sum total is that, six months after release, the community had almost completely soured on WWE 2K25. And collectively, they were right to do so. Which is remarkable. Remember, inside the ring this was the series' finest hour. Yet, had we re-reviewed it in September, it would have been deducted at least half a star.

Giant unlockables

DeLorean engaged, history lesson complete, WWE 2K26 enters the fray with an even more combustible element: its new Ringside Pass. It follows battle pass convention set by other games by offering 40 tiers of extra content – half free, half 'premium' (i.e. paid for). Despite pre-release misgivings, it's actually very fun to progress through. Rewards such as Island VC and MyFaction cards tempt you into those modes even if you're never previously been interested, while unlocking legends is more engaging than the old supercharger method. Amid a bursting roster, this is the first time in years we've dusted off Mr Perfect and Andre The Giant.

Those legends are free, but Season 1's paid-for characters delight too: AAA newcomers Vikingo, Flammer, Psycho Clown and Mr Iguana all handle delightfully. Alas, with a bizarre caveat. You progress up the tiers by learning RXP, but its implementation often makes little sense. Wins grant 110 RXP, regardless of whether a match finishes in a roll-up after 45 seconds, or after nine minutes of near falls and finisher reversals. It's utterly baffling that a game that features a star system for every match doesn't have it play into your RXP gains.

Worse, the RXP system penalizes you for stepping outside of solo bouts. I invited a mate around for an evening's old school sofa play, and had a brilliant time teaming up using the new 'mystery superstar' mechanic, where you don't know your wrestler until the ring entrances unfold – but earned precisely zero RXP across the night. Turns out, you can only earn RXP in tags by having your partner be AI controlled. Eh?

The bigger question is whether this series needed a battle pass at all. That will be answered in Seasons 2 and 3, where we see whether the initial generosity shown here continues or – as with those complaints about 2K25 – things get stingier, and therefore money grabbier. Much will rest on how 2K implements retro characters, after most fans missed out on McIntyre and Styles last year. In a worrying precedent, a selection of MyFaction's launch Live Events can only be attempted with cards found in packs. Rabblerouser, meanwhile, is gone completely.

There's an argument that Visual Concepts is only keeping step with other sports games, but it misses a clear distinction. EA Sports FC 26 might gate retro Ronaldo or Messi behind stratospheric card prices, but their character models are identical, and you can already play as them across all modes outside of Ultimate Team. In contrast, retro cards in WWE 2K26 feature different likenesses, entrances, trons (videos), and theme music. Effectively encouraging your audience to buy them using real money when the deluxe edition already costs $149.99 feels really underhanded.

The real shame is that this is such a great game when you set aside all the clandestine cash grabs. Quality of life improvements permeate every area, including those two controversial modes. MyFaction gets a new bespoke camera angle and ring setup, with your active cards displayed on the entrance screen in the background. Smash and Stash rewards are returned to full generosity for now, and the expansion of World Tour to cover five continents is promising. Similarly, faction allegiances (with unique rewards) and properly voiced cutscenes significantly improve The Island.

Ring of honor

Between the ropes, it's outstanding. No exaggeration. A tweak to the stamina system adds a purple 'cooldown' bar to the hud, which denotes your character is fatigued – and until it returns to yellow, you can't run or reverse. This slows matches down a step, and adds a cerebral element, where endlessly spamming moves has a tangible negative effect. New Payback abilities involving the ref are also welcome. Bully enables you to intimidate the official into counting faster, while Ref Bump initiates a trope so key to wrestling for decades, that's never been in the game before: the referee being 'accidentally' downed at a critical moment. Sweet.

Commentary is also wonderfully on-point – and amusing, with the additions of Wade Barrett and Booker T, in place of Byron Saxton. Here's the former, narrating his entrance at the biggest show on the calendar: "Wade Barrett is competing at WrestleMania, with Wade Barrett on commentary. How can things get any better?"

Little treasures like that bring regular smiles, and there are plenty of others. Both MyRise storylines, waging war with Jordynne Grace (woman's division) and Bron Breakker (men's) move at a decent lick, packing in welcome fan-servicing unlockables – pretty much every character from the mode since WWE 2K22 returns. Wrestler entrances seamlessly add user-defined taunts, fireworks and ring pyro. Alternate attires no longer take up a create-a-wrestler slot, and these 'CAW's are doubled to 200, tempting endless customization. AI opponents can be pre-programmed with your own move sequences. Detailed win-loss records accompany each wrestler on the character select screen. Without those monetization frustrations, this review could easily have been a list of 100 things we love.

Alas, those frustrations loom, and lessons from last year have to be heeded. There can be no four-star review until WWE 2K26 proves its priorities are gameplay quality, rather than siphoning its audience for every last penny. That means attractive MyFaction rewards for one year rather than one month, and a commitment to making new characters and old gimmicks available for every player, rather than merely those with ambitions to be the next Ted DiBiase. The WWF's Million Dollar Man was merely a gimmick, after all.

What happens when you chuck Mario Golf and Super Smash Bros. into a blender with some good old fashioned explosives? Apparently, an extremely popular multiplayer game called Super Battle Golf, which has quietly become one of Steam's best-selling games this year at 500,000 copies sold.

The premise for Super Battle Golf is simple and brilliant. It's an online golfing game where eight players try to knock their balls into the hole all at the same time. While it would normally be seen as pretty rude to, oh I don't know, throw a grenade at someone on the putting field, in Super Battle Golf, it's encouraged. It is also advised to "hit your friends with your ball. Ram them down with a golf cart. Fire an orbital laser from half-way across the map. Collect an assortment of items to stop your friends from getting any points as you make your way to the hole."

I'm not even gonna play coy, that sounds like a bangin' good time, and apparently it is! Super Battle Golf launched only about a month ago, and according to publisher Oro Interactive, it's already sold 500,000 units. "Holy moly... it just keeps going. We also hit a new CCU high of 20,421 players yesterday!" reads a tweet from the publisher. "Mind = blown."

Visually and on paper, Super Battle Golf has all the trappings of friendslop with low-res environments, anthropomorphic characters wearing gormless expressions, and a heavy reliance on social interaction, but judging from its 95% positive Steam reviews, it seems more like elevated friendslop. "Less like friendslop and more like friendsoufflé," as one Steam user phrased it.

Super Battle Golf is only on Steam for now, but developer Brimstone has confirmed it's working on a console port with no confirmed release date.

The Skate team at EA has been hit with layoffs just days after announcing a more aggressive form of monetization coming to the game with season 3 on March 10.

You can read all about Skate's new microtransactions here, but essentially EA has broken a promise not to lock map areas behind paywalls by locking a map area behind a paywall, and in another PR self-own, it's also come up with a new type of microtransaction that'll let you rent access to the new area for a limited time using earnable in-game currency.

As if things couldn't get grimmer, EA has now announced an unspecified number of layoffs at Full Circle, the studio behind the Skate reboot.

"As skate. continues to evolve, we're transforming as a studio," reads an announcement on EA's official website. "We're reshaping Full Circle to better support skate.'s long-term future and focus the team on the things that matter most to you – and making those things great.

"These shifts mean making changes to our team structure, and some roles will be impacted."

EA has been one of the big companies at the forefront of what has now become a years-long industry restructuring resulting in thousands of redundancies. Following EA's $55 billion deal to go private last September, the company's leadership assured there would be no "immediate" changes to jobs. Sadly, it seems we've now left the safety net of that immediacy some five months on. Still, Full Circle has pledged to grease up the trucks on its skateboard and roll forward with a smaller team.

"Our work on skate. continues. We look forward to working with you as we move faster, listen more closely, and deliver consistently for all of you," it says. "Our commitment to skate., and to the millions of players who believe in it, remains strong."

In the meantime, here are some of the best sports games you can play right now.

Like most annual sports games, it'd be incredibly easy to label WWE 2K26 as formulaic. It'd be incredibly lazy, too. There are elements of the new brawler that bear a whiff of cut 'n paste: CM Punk's Showcase, the two-parts card-collecting to one-part controversy MyFaction mode, another year of The Island despite most fans panning its debut. Dig deeper, though, and you unearth originality, ambition and hope. After a morning-long hands-on, WWE 2K26's best bits appear to be the details that won't make headlines.

Take wrestler entrances. For most sports games, gameplay is everything. In the choreographed and scripted world of wrestling, that isn't quite true. Of course we want in ring back-and-forth, with weighty collisions, near-falls and crazy finishes, but WWE games are unique in that the show is almost as important as any match: realistic arenas, taunts, likenesses, themes and so on. To that end, Visual Concepts has overhauled the pre-match build up in ways that hook you in before a single punch has been thrown.

Last year saw the addition of user-defined camera angles, and this adds your own taunts and fireworks. It's all seamless, too. Tap the D-pad left up once, twice, or thrice and your grappler breaks out of their motion to perform a face taunt; one to three downward taps do the same, but for heel animations – such as turning to the crowd with a 'boo-hoo' eye rub. Left taps of the pad trigger stage pyro, while right taps unleash fireworks from the turnbuckles. It's truly impressive to see Goldberg break out from the entrance motion every fan knows off by heart to rouse the crowd, without a single animation mis-step. Throw in four- and five-person entrance editing and the community is going to have so much fun with this.

It's a similar story once you're in the ring. Here, the D-pad is used to define your first action of the match – rushing your opponent, posing for the crowd, offering a handshake (which you can turn into a nefarious cheap shot), triggering a punch-off or chain wrestling exchange, and so on. When I've had pre-release time with past WWE games, I've mostly skipped entrances and cut-scenes in order to get straight to the action. For WWE 2K26, I interacted with the build-up to every single match. It's immersive, and all driven by you. Great news indeed.

Time to play the game

As for that gameplay, I'll reserve full judgment for my upcoming WWE 2K26 review, but there are myriad encouraging signs – most of them subtle, again. The AI can now be programmed to perform sequences of moves, so John Cena or Randy Orton no longer try to pin you after signatures, instead prepping to finish you off with an FU or RKO. Run out of stamina and you can no longer reverse: a clever tweak which adds strategy but also slows matches down, given most players' tendency to spam the sprint button. The new 'Bully' Payback, scaring the referee to count faster, is a great heel addition too.

The surprises continue outside of the ring. Ahead of release, fans obsess about two things: those entrances, and the overall roster. To that end, newcomers this year include NXT hopefuls Hank Walker, Tank Ledger, Tavion Heights, Izzi Dame, Myles Borne, Karmen Petrovic and Wren Sinclair. Alongside them, neatly, are Yoshiki Inamura and Jazmyn Nyx – granted series debuts despite departing WWE last winter. Jump into our WWE 2K26 Ringside Pass guide and you'll note further additions, from AAA: Mr Iguana (yes!), El Hijo Del Vikingo, Psycho Crown, and Lady Flammer.

Alas, there's no new theme tune for Smackdown cult favourite Kit Wilson. However, there is good news elsewhere on the music front, with licensed songs from the game's soundtrack now available for entrances. Want your CAW – or any real-life wrestler – to head to the ring accompanied by Andrew WK anthem Party Hard? It's finally possible. Linkin Park's Two Faced and The Black Curtain by Gatecreeper are other natural choices. They'll be needed: WWE 2K26 sees the number of created superstar slots doubled to 200. Again, for the hardcore fan, this is a colossal upgrade.

For balance, I should note some content removals. Most superstars released in real life since WWE 2K25 are gone, so bid farewell to Braun Strowman, Isla Dawn, Karrion Kross, and Scarlett. (Ridge Holland, curiously, is back – and with a fresh new look, too.) Celebrity DLC additions KSI, Shaquille O'Neal, Tyrese Haliburton, and Jalen Brunson are also out, alongside some legends – it's farewell to Jake 'The Snake' Roberts and The Headshinkers. Bizarrely, some entrance tools have been lost too: the 'general purpose' colors for wrestler backdrops have dropped from five to two. Hopefully this is a pre-release oversight and they'll be reinstated for launch. If anything, 200 'CAWs' will need more color options, rather than less.

MyFaction in action

For all the tweaks made, MyFaction is the mode likely to define WWE 2K26's success. Last year it quickly switched from an encouraging launch window to nickel and dime-ing fans for packs and Persona cards, which I'll address further in that imminent review.

For now, the big change to note is Quick Swap matches. You still go in with a four-wrestler squad, but bouts are one-on-one, with grapplers switched out by tapping RT and LB. You must eliminate all four opponents to win. Comedic commentary elements bring novelty, but it's tough to see why fans would play this over traditional tag matches. Indeed, MyFaction's history makes me nervous as to how it will be deployed. But an open mind is required for now.

It sees the old school WWE 2K26 DLC release schedule abolished, and replaced with a battle pass system similar to the one found in EA FC 26. 40 levels of free items are available by playing the game and earning RXP, while the 40 levels’ worth of premium items require a fee ($9.99) to unlock. Back in the '90s and '00s, seeing a home console game ported to a handheld platform usually resulted in something absolutely dreadful, but somehow, the Game Boy Advance versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater turned out to be essential parts of that platform's library. These ports exist, in part, simply because developer Vicarious Visions was deep in debt and desperately needed something to keep the company afloat.

Karthik Bala founded Vicarious Visions alongside his brother in 1991, and the pair spent years working on various passion projects before starting to take on various bits of contract work. Those projects included things like a Game Boy Color port of Activision's Spider-Man game. But by 2000, things at the 45-person studio had started to look dire – a major contract had fallen through, and the company suddenly couldn't make payroll.

"We were literally hand-to-mouth, and what happened was we had to go get a loan from the bank," Bala told Time Extension. "My brother and I went bank to bank to bank, and nobody would give us a loan because at the time we were just a few years out of college, we had a big payroll, we didn't have any collateral, and we didn't have any assets; I was barely making my rent at the time."

Eventually, Bala and his brother convinced a bank to give them a $1 million dollar loan, but "we knew that if we didn't pull this off, we would pretty much be in debt for the rest of our lives." They were able to pay their employees, but they needed more work to ensure the company's future. Luckily, Activision liked their work on Spider-Man and they'd managed to get ahold of early Game Boy Advance hardware, two factors that opened a big opportunity for the studio.

"My brother and I went to E3 2000, and Tony Hawk had just been a big hit for Activision on PlayStation," Bala explained. "We wanted to bring Tony Hawk to handheld, and my brother saw Tony Hawk at the Activision booth. Because of that, we said, 'Hey, we should go pitch Tony Hawk on a game for the Game Boy Advance.'"

Inspired by an isometric arcade skateboarding game from the '80s called 720, Bala called up the team back home and said, "'Why don't we put a pitch together and fake up some screenshots of what it could look like on the GBA?' The artists did that quickly, and FedEx'd me the colour printouts, and we went back to the Activision booth to go find Tony. It was all kind of ridiculous."

Both Tony Hawk and Activision evidently liked what they saw, because Vicarious Visions got the green light to make their GBA port. There was just one problem: it was impossible.

"Coming back from E3, we then told the team we were going to do this project," Bala said, "and they're like, 'Yeah, we've got some bad news for you. To render out all the sprites and all the animation that's needed for all the tricks and movement in 2D, it won't fit on the Game Boy Advance cartridge because there's only 8 megabytes of storage. Just the animations alone would be 80 megabytes.' But we had this handshake deal, so we had to figure it out."

So a 2D, sprite-based take on Tony Hawk was out the window. The solution? Just make the GBA render 3D, polygonal skaters. That's a tall feat on a platform built for SNES-level graphics, but Bala credits developers Matt Conte and Alex Rybakov with making it work. "It was a super complicated and laborious process," Bala explained. "But it ran at 60 frames per second. When Nintendo saw it and when Activision saw it, nobody could believe it, because it was like this 3D game on a handheld, and it felt and played like Tony Hawk."

Vicarious Visions' take on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater launched alongside the new handheld in 2001, and is still considered one of the best GBA games of all time. "That was our big breakout hit," Bala added. "It was year that we paid back all of our debt, and we became a premier developer on the Game Boy Advance. After that, we went on to do a lot of really fun licenses and IPs. At that point, it was like, 'You know what? This is what we should embrace. We should embrace doing console and handheld games with big IP.'"

The partnership between Vicarious Visions and Activision was strong enough that the publisher eventually acquired the studio in 2005. The studio would continue to support various Activision titles over the years, including numerous handheld editions of games like Guitar Hero and Skylanders. But after delivering the fantastic Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 remakes in 2020, Vicarious Visions was shuffled over to become part of Blizzard and now largely offers support on the Diablo franchise.

Tony Hawk also starred in some of the best PS1 games ever made.

EA has revealed a big Season 3 roadmap for Skate, but the promising addition of a new map area has been buried in yet more monetization mud. Skate has not only broken its promise of not putting map areas behind a paywall, it's also simultaneously injected a new strain of poison into the economy in the form of rentable areas.

Season 3 of Skate, per EA's blog post, will introduce the Isle of Grom, an expanded area that essentially adds new attractions and environments to the classic tutorial zone. "ALL players will have the opportunity to explore Grom during Season 3," EA proudly announced. But then the caveats come in.

If you buy the new Skate Pass Premium – which, EA boasts, has received more options so you can "choose what works best for you" – you'll get early access to the Isle of Grom from March 10 through April 14.

Following this period, all players can skate Grom from April 14 through May 5.

But then, from May 5 through June 2, you'll need to either buy Skate Pass Premium to enter Grom, or gain access by turning in 500 earnable Rip Chips for a 24-hour ticket that lets you skate in this area temporarily.

"The day pass will be 500 Rip Chips, is valid for 24-hours from the moment you get it, and can be used an unlimited number of times within that 24-hour window," EA explains.

It's one thing to saddle a new area with a tiresome, easily misconstrued, multi-stage rollout that breaks a key promise on monetization – which you really wouldn't expect from EA. But it's another to bookend that rollout with a way to rent a map.

Pressed for an explanation on X/Twitter, the Skate account suggests the game simply had to charge for areas to keep the lights on.

"Launching in Early Access meant we were going to work on the game in public while players played," a response reads. "We want to build this game to last, and it means we will need to make changes as we go sometimes. It also allows us to make improvements like updating our characters, lighting, adding tricks and other things we've changed since September. This change was made to ensure this game sticks around for the long haul."

Separately, the account reiterates: "Yes, sometimes plans have to change. That’s part of the deal when you’re building in public. We're here, we’re listening, and we’re going to keep shaping skate. together."

In a new blog post which attempts to clear the air on what's in development and what's been scrapped, the Skate team outlines other Season 3 additions including tattoos, a new Speedline game mode, cosmetic loadouts, branded Skate Pass content including Vans and adidas, and seasonal events. Yay?

Beloved 2003 wrestling game WWE Smackdown! Here Comes The Pain doesn't have a single guide, and one fan is determined to change that.

But ThisGenGaming, who creates WWE Games content on YouTube, noticed the peculiar fact that, "even though WWE Smackdown Here Comes The Pain will be 23 years old this year that there is no storyline guide for season mode anywhere." A WWE fan has reacted to a friendship bracelet they made for CM Punk indirectly appearing in WWE 2K26.

Back in 2024, a WWE fan named Victoria met CM Punk at WrestleMania 40 and gave him a friendship bracelet featuring the names of his wife, AJ Lee, and his dog, Larry. Later that same year, it became a central plot point in his feud with Drew McIntyre, in which McIntyre destroyed the bracelet after beating down the legendary wrestler. This culminated in a brutal Hell in a Cell match at Bad Blood 2024, during which McIntyre brought a sack into the ring to dump the contents over Punk. But instead of thumbtacks or anything else you'd find in a wrestling match, it was filled with beads matching those used in the bracelet.

Fast-forward to now and CM Punk is the coverstar of WWE 2K26, with the game's Showcase mode focusing on matches from throughout his career. Naturally – given it's his best match since returning to WWE in 2023 – Punk vs McIntyre made the cut. A trailer released by 2K last night shows snippets from the matches included in the mode, and shows off a clip of that moment when McIntyre dumped the beads over Punk's head.

Victoria took to Twitter after the trailer aired, reacting to the inclusion, saying, "WHAT IS MY LIFE" with a picture of the moment attached. Visual Concepts gameplay designer Cornell Gunter quoted the post saying "welcome to WWE 2K26" to which Victoria responded, "this is honestly the coolest thing ever thank you." So this is clearly a lesson to be nice and give gifts to people, because you never know, it could become the central focus of a professional wrestling blood feud and then be included in a video game.

I send a charged topspin shot hurtling across the court. The ball is returned - to my wincing displeasure - by Baby Waluigi, a gurning little thug who's capable of surprisingly powerful flat shots. But Mario Tennis Fever's most wretched infant hasn't reckoned on my doubles partner, Birdo, who's stationed at the net and unleashes a Fever Shot that coats the other side of the court in a tsunami of ink. Petey Piranha replies with a Fever Shot of his own, and a volcanic fissure opens up on our side of the net, spewing globs of magma. Birdo is scorched, and we're down fifteen-love.

Now if all that sounds a little chaotic, then let me be clear: a doubles match of Mario Tennis Fever can be pandemonium. At its busiest moments it feels like four opera singers bellowing at each other in a cupboard full of fireworks. Occasionally, the cacophony resolves into something tuneful and pleasant. At other times, well, it's anarchy with rackets.

But for all that madcap excess, the courtside fundamentals are as clean and elegant as they have ever been. Each of the game's 38 (thirty-eight!) characters is armed with three basic shots, each mapped to a face button: there's a powerful flat, a slow-moving slice, and a bouncy topspin. In addition to those staples, a simple combination of inputs will produce a lob or a drop shot that can place the ball at the very back or the very front of your opponent's half of the court. It's the deliberate use of these five shots, along with intelligent positioning of your character, that will ultimately secure victory against your opponent - no matter how much magma they throw at you.

What a racket

Then there's the Fever Rackets, and it's this arsenal of fantastical tennis-sticks that transform a relatively sober game of counters and positioning into an explosion of fire and goop and whirling tornados. You'll choose a racket during the character selection process, and each is armed with a powerful and whimsical ability. The Lightning Racket, for instance, leaves a crackling electrical field at the point that the ball bounces. The Fire Flower Racket, meanwhile, lets you shoot fireballs every time you make a swing for the ball.

Choosing a racket, then, is a little like choosing your kart in Mario Kart World, but rather than giving you slightly faster acceleration or improved handling it's giving you the ability to electrocute Princess Peach. In a further delightful wrinkle, the effects of your opponent's Fever Shots can be thrown back in their stupid face by returning the ball before it bounces on your side of the court. It's a mechanic that often leads to desperate net-side showdowns as players volley the Fever-filled ball back and forth in a frantic attempt to prevent their side of the court being turned into an ice rink/mud pit/banana-strewn hellscape.

Those that admire the arcade purity of the core tennis gameplay may be relieved to discover that you can turn off Fever Rackets (or play in separate ranked online lobbies without them), but while they undoubtedly inject a certain measure of unbalanced hijinks into proceedings, I find it hard to imagine wanting to play without them, especially during the raucous excitement of online or local multiplayer matches.

Yes, they're frequently infuriating and I suspect that some are wildly more powerful than others, but for all the mayhem their effects produce they do still take skill and timing to deploy well. And frankly, it's just so satisfying to turn the pristine clay of your opponent's service line into a mess of waddling Spines and roaring flame that you're unlikely to care about perfect balance when the game is going your way.

Breaking point

Providing all the structure around this polished core experience is a host of multiplayer and single-player modes to choose from, like a big a la carte menu of tennis. Tournament mode offers a simple series of knockout matches that can be tackled in single-player or co-op, each culminating in nothing more than a static screen announcing your victory. On the face of it, they're the equivalent to Mario Kart's Grand Prix experience, but the reality is that a series of back-to-back games of tennis on the same court can't match the sense of variety and progression you get by travelling from Bowser's Castle to Rainbow Road, say.

The Trial Towers mode injects more variety into the formula by presenting a cavalcade of minigames to conquer, with each victory seeing you ascend the tower to a new challenge. Swing Mode, meanwhile, lets you take to the court using motion controls, in a surprisingly taxing test of coordination that requires you mix analogue stick controls for character movement and shot direction with motion controls for swinging your racket. And then there's Mix It Up, a hodgepodge assortment of score attack minigames and delightfully gimmick-packed tennis courts.

But if you're hoping for a substantial single-player offering to sink your tennis-loving teeth into, you'll probably do as I did and dive into Adventure mode first. Unfortunately, this single-player campaign feels like a chintzy mobile game that's been tacked on to an otherwise premium offering. The throwaway story sees Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi all transformed into mewling infants. The only way to turn this quartet of babies back into four grown Italian men is - for some reason - to get good enough at tennis to defeat some monsters.

The campaign that follows sounds like a smash on paper - there's minigames and puzzle-solving and boss battles and the promise that baby Waluigi will eventually be turned back into an adult and I'll never have to look at him again. But in practice it's all shockingly charmless - a plodding and humourless text-based story that's punctuated by bizarrely lacklustre tennis action. It seems that by bending the core gameplay to fit its story - having Baby Mario volley flying monsters out of the air, say, or douse fires by thwacking watery orbs into the inferno - Mario Tennis Fever loses the grounded, precise feel that's a hallmark of the rest of the game.

But however tempted I might have been to take a tennis racket to my Switch 2 during the three-and-a-bit hours that made up this campaign (and boy-oh-boy, it felt a lot longer), I was only ever one multiplayer game away from renewed guffaws. The experience of hurling ink and mud and fireballs at your friends - while some small part of your brain tries to still think about court positioning and slices and dropshots - is riotous, hilarious, chaotic fun. It's just a shame that, at launch at least, Mario Tennis Fever can't serve up a more complete package.

It's all over for FC 26 TOTY (Team Of The Year) – but its cards should be stalwarts of your line-up all the way through to FC 27. The gargantuan promo gave us new EA FC 26 items for the best male and female players of the last 12 months, alongside a selection of TOTY Icons such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ruud Gullit. FC 26 TOTY release date

The FC 26 release date was Friday, January 16, following a fortnight of fervent fan voting. Initially one men’s and one women’s team were named, with three players boosted to an incredible new 97 overall rating: Ousmane Dembele (ST, Paris SG), Aitana Bonmati (CM, Barcelona), and Alessia Russo (ST, Arsenal). Honourable Mentions cards such as Marc Cucurella are inbound, too – more on him below.

TOTY wasn't the only promo to generate buzz in the opening months of 2026. The FC 26 FC Pro Live Tracker, featuring the likes of Darwin Nunez and Alejandro Garnacho, also gave us some immense new cards.

FC 26 TOTY release schedule

As with previous years, the FC 26 TOTY release schedule was split into four stages. First up we got attackers; next were midfielders; after that it was defenders and goalkeepers, such as Gigi Donnarumma; and then, finally, all cards were catapulted into packs for a big week-long finale. Oh, and tradition means we’re got 12th Man and 12th Woman cards to tie in with that second week, too – Raphinha and Caroline Graham Hansen.

The must-play sports games of 2025 shortlist sees some blockbuster names suffer defeat at the quarter-final stages. Football Manager 2026 made its long-awaited return, long considered one of the best football games of all-time, but endured a challenging launch, and therefore misses out here. Puck-pusher NHL 26 and race sim F1 26 were stellar, yet same-y. Madden 26 improved, but was outplayed by its collegiate sibling. EA FC 26 was much, much better than social media will have you believe – but has its spot among the elite stolen by a fresh-faced youth teamer called Rematch.

It's a list that evolved as the year went by, and not just based on release dates. Indeed, Rematch continues to reinvent itself on a foundational level even next to the best sports games that came before, with new keeper animations introduced as this feature was being written. At the other end of the table, WWE 2K25 looked like it was having the series' greatest year ever – but slid down the charts for reasons we're about to delve into. It's certainly been an eventful 12 months for a genre which was beginning to look stale, and you can relive it all with our look at the best sports games of 2025.

5. NBA 2K26

Developer: Visual Concepts
Platform(s): PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Switch, Switch 2

After some teething problems following the switch to current-gen, Visual Concepts' licensed baller is edging back towards the scintillating form of its heyday. It's looked uncannily lifelike for years; now the feel of the sim is on par with the visuals. Shooting is natural but challenging, while weighty collisions make defending a pleasure. Indeed, off-the-ball movement is the most important upgrade. Players handle with agility under your control, and (depending on their ratings!) make generally sensible decisions when AI-driven. Sling in all the required male and female pro teams, and 30 offseason scenarios for MyGM, and you'll never be court short. Until NBA 2K27, anyway.

4. Rematch

Developer: Sloclap
Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X

While FC 26 rightly scored more highly, Rematch hijacks its spot owing to a truly fresh approach to online soccer. Remember how Rocket League was football with cards? Rematch is Rocket League with, well, footballs. You customize an avatar – or buy real players, such as Ronaldinho – then jump into small-sided kickabouts. Options-wise it's a little bare bones, but out on the digital turf: oh yes. So addictive. Flying into tackles, making physics-defying saves, and unleashing missile-swift shots pulls you in for game after game until 2am. Then 3am. Then the realization that you need to go to work on two hours sleep. Or pull a sickie, and play Rematch…

3. WWE 2K25

Developer: Visual Concepts
Platform(s): PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Switch 2

Early in the year, this looked to be a contender for top spot. In the ring, WWE 2K25 is among the greatest wrestling games ever. Myriad match types, colossal back-and-forth action, and nuances such as switching up entrance cameras combine for a sumptuous package. But over the summer, 2K got carried away with MyFaction and its pull of extra dollars. We've had post-release price rises for packs, personas such as retro Drew McIntyre and Triple H locked behind near-impossible challenges, and the kiboshing of ways to earn MFP without spending money – such as the Rabblerouser badge being nerfed. Quite the heel turn, and therefore no title belt.

2. MLB The Show 25

Developer: San Diego Studio
Platform(s): PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch

Sony's immaculately presented bopper took an incremental approach to changes. Perhaps surprisingly, this turned out to be a masterstroke. Real-life rule tweaks such as shift violations and the pitch clock slid in as seamlessly a Jose Caballero base steal, while two-way players and the ability to cheat towards inside or outside pitches delivered both immersion and detail. Road To The Show also scored a new wrinkle, with a brief introductory period as a high school player – starting out your solo career as a true amateur. As ever, Franchise mode is more addictive than almost any other mode in sports gaming, too. But only almost…

1. College Football 26

Here we go again. For the second straight year, EA's revitalized NCAA series claims top spot under its new, lawsuit-evading-and-handily-straightforward name. College's sophomore season brought an increasingly detailed, limitlessly addictive Dynasty mode – hence the 'almost' in MLB The Show 25's entry – where recruiting hooks you in completely, and season after season flies by. On the field it serves up even more mascots, even greater pageantry, even wilder trick plays, and an incredible array of real-life trophies too – all hosted in a glorious digital trophy cabinet. The best sports game going just raised the bar again. Good luck to its rivals in 2026.

Rematch was an unexpected success. Not in the sense that its positive reception came as a surprise, but in the sense of its very existence. After two releases focused firmly on martial arts, for the devs behind Sifu to be pivoting to a football game came as a shock to many. But while Sloclap racked up 5 million players in its first month, Rematch's first year has not proved to be an open goal.

"It's gone pretty well, but it was a very strong learning curve," Sloclap CEO Pierre Tarno tells me when I ask him about the last six months. Beyond the single-player PvP of debut title Absolver, he points out that Rematch was the studio's first foray into "actually operating a live-service game." Nothing Sloclap had done before had "the complexities of a team-based game" like Rematch, and that quickly caused problems for the devs, even as the game rocketed towards the back of the net.

Own goal

"We faced some issues, honestly, during these first months," Tarno explains. Sloclap's patching process, he reveals, struggled to keep up with the complexity of Rematch's player physics.

Even a subtle change could have side effects on something as important as player movement, which can be devastating in a game where "every interaction can be critical." Getting that wrong has not always brought the best out of the game's community.

"I think players are very precise and very demanding, and very quick to point out issues," Tarno says. "And so we still have – because the game can still be improved – players who are angry, who point out these issues vigorously." The nature of this feedback has clearly taken its toll. While we're here to discuss a game that was ostensibly a huge success, its creative director is clearly focused on the minutiae that underpins the entire show. At one point, our discussion turns to a detail as intricate as a six-inch tweak to volley height, and the impact that can have on the competitive scene.

As we talk, it becomes increasingly clear that the Rematch learning curve was steeper than Tarno and Sloclap expected. And when I ask Tarno if there were any aspects of that learning curve the team didn't expect to have to contend with, his answer is immediate: Crossplay. Multi-platform matchmaking was on the Rematch roadmap right up until launch, but Sloclap had known for months that getting it in place on time would be hard work.

Eventually, the decision was made that launching without crossplay would be OK, but Tarno says "we underestimated how much players expect it as a basic standard of online multiplayer." Eventually, it would take more than two months for cross-platform play to make it to the game, "which is an eternity for gamers, and we were criticized for that."

Liquid football

"We never really intended for this to be a game that would remain present for the long run," Tarno admits, which is possibly why some of these patching issues are having such an impact on the studio.

Rematch's original post-launch roadmap is set to run for 12-to-18 months, but it's already "very different" to what it was at launch. As top-level metas solidify and and less-skilled players up their game at the other end, "there are things that we were planning to do that we've deprioritized, and there are things that now, after a few months, have become clear that they are an important evolution to bring to the game."

The difficulties that Sloclap has faced with Rematch are not ones that are simple to address, but Tarno isn't hiding behind the team's relative inexperience with games like this. "I was going to say it's hard to balance competitive team-based games," he says, catching himself, "but I think we knew that."

Pivoting "to a live-management mindset" might have proved to be "a significant effort," but it seems real difficulty still lies in ensuring that once the studio has reached the end of its planned 18 months, what's left is "the most interesting version" of Rematch they could make. "We want to make this the best possible game," Tarno says, confident that "over the weeks and months to come, [players] will see that the game is just better and better."

Audiences can be fickle, and far bigger, more-experienced studios than Sloclap scored the own-goal of an ill-conceived live-service push. But what's interesting about this team's approach is that the final phase of Rematch isn't a forever game that pulls in millions of players year after year. Instead, it looks like Sloclap is creating something totemic, able to stand out as something new, even if it's only for a relatively short time.

FC 26 Joga Bonito Team 1 dropped on Friday, December 5, with 5 Star Skill Moves for every player. Unlike the FC 26 FC Pro Live Tracker, its cards aren’t upgradeable – but there are still a delicious confection of tasty items to chase. Among them are the three Heroes mentioned above, alongside David Ginola (LM, Ligue 1, 90) and Maicon (RB, Serie A, 89). Aitana Bonmati and Cole Palmer are two of the elite modern additions, while Vitinha’s new card (CM, Paris SG, 91) was selling for 1.5 million coins as of mid-December. FC 26 Joga Bonito Team 2 release date

There was never any hint of a Joga Bonito Team 2 release date, and indeed the promo came to a close after a single week. Still, December was a busy month for FC 26 promos, including the always-mammoth FC 26 Winter Wildcards. The first FC 26 Joga Bonito SBC lived up to the samba promise. It was for ballet-toed West Ham and Brazil ace Lucas Paqueta, who gets a new 87 rating in exchange for submitting five Squad Building Challenges. The list of them is below, and the last two aren’t a typo – they’re identical. The set cost around 314,000 coins as of Saturday, December 6. Alas, it's now expired. Doh!

FC 26 Joga Bonito Leonardo Fernandez objectives

Completing four FC 26 Joga Bonito Leonardo Fernandez objectives rewarded you with an 85-rated version of the Penarol CAM. It was relatively straightforward – particularly if you already had Colombian and Uruguayan attackers in your club. Coming no less than 15 years after the last game in the series, Skate has proven divisive since launch, thanks to being always online, having microtransactions, and a myriad of bugs and issues. Developer Full Circle is aware of the problems and is working to fix them, offering some free in-game goodies as compensation for now.

"Things have not gone as smoothly for some of you as we would have liked," a dev update states in the opening paragraph. Maybe an understatement, to be frank.

"We're tweaking and fixing the game - some of it on the fly, and some of it as part of longer-term improvements," the post continues. "But, things will continue to change and improve. We all want Skate to be great, and working with you, our community, to fine-tune the player experience during Early Access is the way we get there."

The freebies are listed right off the top, because why wouldn't you start there? Everyone who logs into the game right now can receive the benefit of 2000 Tix and 500 SVBs. The catch is that the reward is only live between now and when season 2 kicks off in December, and you need to spend it in that time period as well.

After that, the issues within progression are addressed. Players are plateauing early, getting softlocked at a certain level. "Batch fixes" are coming, that’ll fix groups of people at once, dislodging them, with deeper changes to follow that prevent this from occurring again.

For season 2, the in-game market is getting tweaked to offer improved value and a wider range for players. Premium bits of kit will be made "feel even more unique" and valuable, while the skate.Pass progression will be pushed up to 90 tiers. More economical fine-tuning is happening as well, and players can see it in effect come the 7-Ply Maple Harvest event this November.

"We're truly grateful for your patience as we improve, grow, and evolve Skate during Early Access," the blog finishes. "We wouldn't be here without you."

Club managers across nearly any division can rest easy in the knowledge that their performance can hardly be worse than Football Manager 26. The latest entry in the long-running management sim is being criticized for bugs, a poor UI, and a lack of features present in previous installments, to the point where it's now one of the worst-reviewed games on Steam.

Sports Interactive and Sega's latest Football Manager game arrived on November 4, following a brief period of beta access for those who preordered, and PC players aren't happy. The Steam release sits at Mostly Negative with over 2,100 reviews, as people make their feelings known about this iteration.

"Setting aside the obvious (but aggravating) bugs and other technical issues, as they will most likely be addressed in updates and hotfixes, I think FM 26 simply wasn't ambitious enough in the right places," says the top review on Valve's store. Others are more pointed.

"I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a game I was looking forward to playing," says another. "A million glitches and bugs besides, cannot recommend this to anyone," a third states. "Having played FM for 2 decades I can say that this is the worst iteration ever."

Those are just a few among many, with a large contingent of longtime fans who’ve been playing the series for decades who now feel quite short-changed. It’s not all completely negative, as some praise the improved tactical control and match recreation, but these facets seem to pale in comparison to what amounts to a pretty miserable experience for many.

Right now, FM26 is the seventh-worst-rated game ever across the whole of Steam's catalog. Not the kind of chart anyone wants to be a part of, and to do so 24 hours from launch is harsh.

It doesn't help that FM26 arrives after a two-year break, as FM25 was cancelled, and is the first entry built using the Unity engine. Expectations were higher than normal, and they certainly haven't been met within the PC community. Sports Interactive has yet to comment, but the devs will need to make substantial changes to cause any turnaround here.

FC 26 Ultimate Scream Team 1 Best Cards

FC 26 Ultimate Scream Team 1 landed on Friday, 24 October, and formed the third major promo of the season – following FC 26 Cornerstones and Ratings Reload. As well as two Roles boosts, it throws players into unconventional roles – such as turning legendary Mexican goalkeeper Jorge Campos into an 88-rated ST, with 85 Pace. The top-rated contemporary players in Team 1 are Vini Jr (ST, Real Madrid, 90), Debinha (RW, KC Current, 89), and Joshua Kimmich (RB, FC Bayern, 89). FC 26 Cornerstones Team 2 Best Cards

The FC 26 Ultimate Team 2 release date was on Halloween itself: Friday, October 31. A 91-rated Ousmane Dembele card is the pick of the pile, but others are picked up serious value on the transfer market too – such as Wesley Sneijner. The Dutchman's new 89-OVR Heroes item was selling for 1 million coins within an hour of release, but by mid-December he'd dropped to more affordable 233,000. All Team 2 players have been added to the cards list below.

FC 26 Ultimate Scream Team Paul Pogba SBC

It wouldn’t be a new promo without a collection of Squad Building Challenges, and completing the Ultimate Scream set granted an enticing reward: one of two Paul Pogba items, both rated 86. The requirements to do so are below. It cost around 209,000 coins as of the promo’s first night, and you had until Friday, November 7 to get it done.

Other SBC players included Fridolina Rolfo, Phil Foden, and Yannick Carrasco. Additionally, there were six SBCs to complete across the fortnight in order to unlock an Ultimate Scream Myles Lewis-Skelly card.

FC 26 Ultimate Scream Diego Luna Objectives

In addition to the Pogba SBC, EA stuck with tradition by giving us an objectives player reward to kick off the spook-tastic promo. You needed to complete the in-game tasks below in order to earn 84-rated Ultimate Scream Diego Luna, again with a cut-off date of Friday, October 31. Winging us into a new month was FC Fleury 91 midfielder Ines Juarena, with a new overall rating of 84 – including tidy 87s for both Balance and Reactions. To earn her new card, you needed to complete four of the five tasks below by Friday, November 7.

Racket Rivals codes will help you gain a competitive edge, as you try to defeat your opponents in this athletic experience. While matches are based around the sport of badminton, there are other elements to mix things up such as Rocket League-style walls to reflect the shuttle and anime-like special powers to trigger.

The promos available so far fall into two categories, with some adding Yen that can be spent unlocking new Spirits (characters) or Spins that reveal fresh Awakenings (superpowers), and others providing free Spins or Lucky Spins directly. All Racket Rivals codes

These are the current Racket Rivals codes that can be redeemed for rewards:

There are a few codes for Racket Rivals that are currently active, providing players with a healthy amount of Yen to top up their bank balances, though recent promos no longer give bonus spins to earn new Awakenings. These codes are not case-sensitive, so while you may find it easier to type them all in capitals, you don't have to do so as long as you use the correct spelling for the promos. There are no level requirements to claim these rewards, so you can add them to your account as soon as you've completed the tutorial match.

How to redeem Racket Rivals codes

To redeem Racket Rivals codes, select the Shop cart icon at the bottom of the screen to open the Shop menu, then hit the CODES button in the top-right corner of that menu pop-up. This will bring up the Codes screen, then select the Enter Code text box to type in your promo before hitting SUBMIT underneath. Codes for Racket Rivals are not case-sensitive, but if you get a "Code does not exist!" warning then the promo has been entered incorrectly or it has expired.

Skate's San Vansterdam is a miracle of line design. This city exists to be shredded to pieces and every corner I coast around offers a spot that demands I push my board towards it. There's the man-made water feature which I spend a morning ollieing, fastplanting, and grinding over in the Upper Cut, while a lunchtime session with a friend sees us scale a tower just outside the, um, delightfully named Chum Bucket stadium so we can drop into a huge ramp and fire ourselves across wavy halfpipes.

And yet, it's a simple stairset in Hedgemont that devours an evening. On the left, a careening slope. On the right, a 20ft staircase with a trickier-than-it-looks rail curving down the middle. Once I make it to the bottom down either of these obstacles, there's a gap over a grassy bank. Do I mix in a quick lil' christ air? Or a triple heelflip? Or maybe I should go back to the top and do a coffin down the slope instead?

For such a tiny bit of real estate in the sprawling San Van, the possibilities of what to do here feel vaster than the gap between Skate 3 and Skate 2025's release. While we're barely a week into this incarnation of Skate, one which has divided the community already, what it's getting right signals that 2025's skating game resurgence can stick the landing.

Birdman vs San Van

If you didn't grow up on a diet of pop-punk soundtracks and Coach Frank yelling yea-yeah at you, then it's understandable that the great skate renaissance may have passed you by. Let's start with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4. The Birdman's second remake of the decade is a nostalgia play through and through, recreating what made the series so moreish.

The series' version of skateboarding is all about reflexes under pressure, the score ticking up as you string an increasingly hefty combo across tightly designed maps, the sensation of flowing though levels committed to memory while hammering away at tricks with thumb-ruiningly intense speeds as intoxicating as ever.

But THPS 3+4 doesn't alter the fundamentals. In fact, the game places a 2:00 minute time limit on all its levels, even ones originally designed to be played without them. The result is that THPS 3+4 is a distillation of what skating games used to be, just without a yearly release cycle magnifying its flaws.

Skate, on the other hand, is a more daring beast. It's not a love letter to the past, but a path forward that's still being plotted. Ditching the $60 boxed release model, going free-to-play in Early Access and forgoing the usual single player focus of a career mode, this is an experience designed to be shared with others, honing in on what the series has always been about: a realistic depiction of skating.

Thrashing it out

And that is where fans have been divided over Skate. Because while the flick-it trick system and physics meet the brief, the art direction is undeniably more cartoony. Your character is the epitome of this, boasting a Fortnite-esque sheen and a smoothness that can feel at odds with the scrapes, grazes, and grime that you'd accumulate from laying tricks down across a city. Likewise, San Van is a clean city where everything has been designed for you to take advantage of it - something that dilutes the transgression of skating something you're not supposed to.

However, the art style is a positive, as it allows the game's greater strength to shine through. The world design is impeccable, a harmonious mix of clearly designed skate parks and more naturalistic spots that create a rhythm to the city, where you'll easily hop between points as something new catches your eye. While the lack of challenges has been another loud complaint - and for what it's worth, I agree they currently feel too rudimentary - it's only highlighted how little I actually want them right now, as I'm more than happy skating this city to see what I can discover for myself.

Figuring out how a spot works and then adding more complexity to my line is far more rewarding than a t-shirt I'll never put on my character. This simplicity in both art style and design is crucial as the game evolves, with the first glimpses of this coming from the Skate early access roadmap.

If San Van had been too realistic, new areas run the risk of jarring with what's there, breaking up the balance that the world currently has. As someone who has spent a summer watching Beavis and Butthead run around Warzone, I can tell you how much damage odd juxtapositions can do to a game. This isn't to say that Skate is flawless. AI assistant VEE gives off DJ Atomika vibes, something you should never aim for. The onslaught of cosmetic packs is something I've no interest in and the Early Access jank reminds this is early, early days for Skate.

Still, I just can't tear myself away from San Van. By stripping away the structure of what's come before and doubling down on the joy of freeform discovery, Skate feels like it's onto something sustainable. After years without a skateboarding game like it, I'm itching to see its version of the future… right after I try that stairset again.

Across 30 years of FIFA and FC, and a decade of Ultimate Team, you’d be forgiven for assuming that you’d tried every possible color combo on a football kit. Cremonese says no. Their home kit marries red and grey stripes, and somehow looks super smart despite the curious mix ’n match. It dates back to 1914, and has been worn by greats such as Gianluca Vialli and Antonio Cabrini.

American midfielder Rose Lavelle snuck onto the FC 26 best players list alongside more esteemed names such Aitana Bonmati and Caroline Graham Hansen – and now her club side makes a tidy move to land in our fashion catalogue too. Nike kits always ooze class, and this one’s blend of light blue and black feels unique while looking sublime.

Toulouse (home)

League: Ligue 1 McDonalds (FRA 1)

FC Gotham aren’t the only Nike stars this season. Toulouse’s home strip is just glorious, made up of white and purple halves – and, even better, completely forgoing a sponsor. Look closely at its back for the motto “Debout. Toujours.”, which means ‘Stand Up. Always.” Toulouse’s pink away shirt is worth a look too, and also available for just 300 coins.

As well as being good-looking from a distance, FC Koln’s third strip also has a beautiful sneaky secret. If you’ve ever ventured to Gamescom then you know that of the most incredible features of Cologne is its astonishing cathedral, built in 1248. If those red and white stripes look familiar, it’s because the Welsh club’s new road jersey marks a long-standing friendship with Spanish giants Athletic Bilbao. During the Spanish civil war of 1937 many children were evacuated to Great Britain, with Newport one of the main towns chosen to house them. It’s an unlikely link-up, but it’s resulted in this peach of a strip.

FC 26 Cornerstones came to a close back in October, but its best cards can still be a sneaky asset to your team. FC 26 Cornerstones Team 1 best cards

We’re not into 90-OVR territory yet, but the best card in FC 26 Cornerstones Team 1 narrowly misses out. It belongs to Real Madrid and Uruguay CM Federico Valverde, with an overall rating of 89. Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer runs him close on 88, a rating shared by Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. Manchester City CM Tijjani Reijnders earns a new rating of 87, as does Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. All FC 26 Cornerstones Team 1 cards can be viewed in the list at the foot of this guide.

FC 26 Cornerstones Team 2 best cards

The FC 26 Cornerstones Team 2 release date was Friday, October 3. It delivered our first Cristiano Ronaldo card of the new campaign, with a sturdy OVR of 88. Other standouts include Liverpool summer signing Florian Wirtz getting upgraded to 89, and Chelsea defensive stalwart Millie Bright also hitting the big eight-eight. The first FC 26 Cornerstones SBC was for Arsenal summer signing Martin Zubimendi. The Spaniard’s new card is set at CDM and 86-rated. Below are the five challenges you needed to complete to get him. It cost around 90,000 coins but sadly expired on Friday, September 26.

Best teams to manage in FC 26 Career Mode

Yeah, we know, you desperately want to manage your favorite club. Again. But what about a change, and even a challenge? Below are five possible career mode starting points that you really, really should try – unless you're a Liverpool or 1860 Munich fan. Spend big, spend small, or don't spend at all, with this cheeky quintet of challenges…

Premier pedigree: Everton

For many career mode players, the Premier League is the place to be – and Everton are a solid choice for you to carve out your own slice of history. Its new, plush Hill Dickinson Stadium is in the game from the outset, and a $47.58 million transfer kitty should ensure plenty of reinforcements alongside Jack Grealish and James Tarkowski. Board expectations in your first season are simply to avoid relegation, meaning you also have a long leash in terms of early results.

The old guard: Real Oviedo

Three resplendent Adidas kits include a unique blue and yellow number, but that’s only one reason to start your career mode as Los Godos. Their line-up is a catalogue of familiar faces from FIFAs past, such as Eric Bailly, Santi Cazorla, Salomon Rondon, and Leander Dendonker. A modest transfer budget of $2.48m represents a challenge, but – like Everton – simply avoiding relegation in the first year is an achievable aim. From there, you can grow to challenge Barca, Real, and Atletico.

Surprise underachievers: Paris SG 

PSG, underachievers? Yes, but not in quite the way you might think. Rather than talking about the super-stacked men’s team, we mean their female equivalent. Paris St German women have won their league once to go with four cup victories, but those achivements are dwarfed by Lyon. Their rivals have claimed 18 leagues, 10 cups and 8 Women’s CL wins. Can you overhaul that dominance with only $2.48m to work with? Mary Earps between the sticks is at least a start…

Kane and able: FC Bayern

The ultimate managerial easy ride comes in the form of Germany’s most successful club. Star players include Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, and Michael Olise, and your transfer kitty is a colossal $98.87m. The Bundesliga makes for a great experience in terms of depth, too, with the Allianz Arena’s return meaning that all 18 of its grounds are on FC 26 stadiums list. Just make sure you live up to the board’s lofty expectations: “Win it all, at home and abroad.”

Forever underdogs: Bromley

The South Londoners were formed in 1892, but have never won a domestic league or cup, and start with the lowest transfer budget of any English club in the game: $1.12 million. Thankfully all expectations are ‘very low’ so you’ve plenty of scope and time to bring in some key loanees in the first season, and slowly make your way up the leagues. As long-term career mode projects go, this is as challenging as it gets.

Best FC 26 real managers

While you can create your own avatar at the outset of career, many players swear by the realism of having an official manager in the dugout. They don’t have to match their current club, either: for our FC 26 review, I took over West Ham as Irons legend Carlos Tevez. Below are ten non-Premier League managers who look the part in career mode, and are worth your consideration – even if the benefits of you choosing them are purely visual. We’ve also included a club from their past who you might wish to pair them with.

FC 26 Tactical Presets explained

After selecting (or creating) a manager and choosing your team, the first port of call on you managerial Tasks list is adopting a Tactical Vision. There are seven different templates, with each one offering subtle tweaks to your tactics from the outset.

Standard is a balanced approach – an all-rounder set-up with no glaring strengths or weaknesses. Wing Play, obviously, focuses on your wide men, while Possession is all about tiki-taka style short passing. High Pressing, meanwhile, revolves around the legendary gegenpress and direct attacking.

Park the Bus opts for a more defensive-minded approach, Counter Attack sees your team sitting back and ready to pounce with rapid breakaways, and Kick and Rush is more route-one based, leaning on a team’s physical strengths.

Once you’ve picked your Tactical Preset, move over to the Coach Management tab at the top of the screen. From here you can hire coaches to implement your chosen philosophy. Each is rated out of five stars in a chosen category: attack, midfield, defence, and goalkeeping. The better they are, the more they can impact your players’ attributes throughout the season. Just make sure you pick coaches that are aligned with your Tactical Preset, as well as placing them in the category where they can have the most effect. For example: if a coach has a two-star attack rating but four-star in defence, keep them in your defence coach lineup.

FC 26 Youth Academy and Rush tournaments

The FC 26 Youth Academy is a critical part of your long-term planning. Last year its countries list was expanded to more than 160, and you can now scout up to four specific positions, and three distinct Player Roles. The most important support for this is youth-player Rush tournaments. These enable you to try out hot prospects, and improve them along the way.

Youth tournaments in career mode take place every two months, and you can choose to use players with their current ratings, or ultimate potential. After each match you have the option to view how Match XP has affected their ability, and how long it will take them to level up to the next OVR. It’s a lengthy process, but this is a mode build for extended play – which makes it all the more rewarding when players levelled up through Rush finally make it to your first team.

FC 26 Career Mode youth scouting

Looking for the next big thing? Hit the Academy tab then Youth Scouts. This process works similar to the one above, but with even more nations to search for talent.

You can hire up to three youth scouts. They can then be sent away in increments of three months, six months, or nine months, and you can give them specific instructions, such as finding players with a focused role. Like with normal scouts, each has a Experience and Judgment rating, which will help you find more players and better players respectively.

During their time away, you will intermittently get reports back. Sift through the players to see a broad range revealing their current overall rating, their potential rating, their attributes, and their positions. From these menus, you can sign players for your academy.

FC 26 Career Mode scouting

The Global Transfer Network is your main hub for scouting players. If set up correctly, you should have a continual influx of talent to cast your eye over.

You can find the Global Transfer Network by heading to the Transfers tab, then selecting the Scouts panel. Once there, you’ll see your current scouts on one tab, and an instructions menu on the other.

First, use Instructions to tell your scouts which players to identify. You can search for potential signings by position, age, contract length, overall condition (from backup to world class prospect), PlayStyle or Player Role.

Once that’s done, it’s time to send your scouts out across the world. You can hire up to six scouts, and each has a star rating out of five for two categories: Experience and Judgment. Experience will give you a larger selection of players to choose from, while those with higher Judgment will find higher quality players. Ideally, you want someone who is at least a three-star rating in both skills.

After a few in-game weeks, you can return to each instruction grid to find the list of players that your scout has found. If they’re having trouble finding players, widen your scout instruction parameters. You may want the dream player who is great at everything, but it’s rarely that simple.

From there, you’ll be given a rough snapshot of each player. You will then need to scout them further by clicking on the player’s report. We also recommend shortlisting them in the Transfer Hub so you can keep track of specific targets among the dozens of players that will be highlighted. After a short period, your scouts deliver a full report including overall rating, market value, weekly wage, release clauses, and expected transfer fee.

FC 26 career mode transfer negotiations

Once you’ve scouted a player, you can add them to your shortlist and either approach to buy, approach to loan, or delegate the tasks to your assistant. Scouting a player fully allows you to get a rough asking price, as well as the lowest offer that could realistically be accepted.

Once you’ve entered negotiations, you can offer an up-front fee that comes out your transfer budget, or sweeten the deal with sell-on clauses and player swaps.

Be careful with your first offer. Table an unrealistic bid and the selling club will walk away. We recommend starting just above a player’s market value and going from there.

If accepted, you’ll have to negotiate a wage with the player’s agent, as well as their squad role and contract length. If they sign on the dotted line, you’ll get a quick recap on how he compares to your current squad as well as what the best possible deal could have been.

FC 26 Career Mode training plans

FC 25 Training Plans are another a way to balance the fitness of your players. They're found in one of the six panels beneath the Squad tab.

You have two stats to take care of when it comes to your squad: Energy and Sharpness. The former is all about how fit your players currently are. If they play too many games, they will have less stamina and, in turn, they won’t be able to complete 90 minutes without gasping for air. High Sharpness, on the other hand, will lead to a boost in form and skill, leading to them playing better on the pitch.

For each player, you’re given five levels of training. Intense and Heavy are all about Sharpness. Balanced is, naturally, a middle ground. Light and Recovery, meanwhile, zero in on stamina and energy but come at the cost of decreased Sharpness – and vice-versa.

FC 26 Career Mode tips

While we’ve covered coaches in Tactical Presets above, there’s still a handful of tips to take in so you can get the most out of your boot room.

Succeed in the first season and you’ll increase your manager rating. That will allow you to bring on additional coaches in future seasons – exponentially increasing the impact of Tactical Presets. For gameplay help, leap into our FC 26 skill moves guide.

Like your players, coaches don’t remain static in their ability. The more wins you get with a Tactical Preset enabled, the more XP you can put towards your backroom staff. So don’t worry about bringing in some three-star coaches to begin with.

Also pay attention to a coach’s Knowledge level. This boosts a player’s overall rating when they are on the pitch and, if you can afford it, you want to be aiming for no lower than Accomplished, though shelling out for Experts will help you get short-term success even if your wage budget will soon deplete. It’s also fine to chop and change your coaching staff to get the right balance. We recommend focusing on Attack and Midfield as they provide the most tangible results (i.e. goals) in the early parts of the season.

Coaches also help raise the Role Familiarity of players set to key roles by one level. In order for this to occur, make sure that the coach’s tactical Knowledge is higher than the natural Role rating of the player you want to improve – and that they can play that position in the first place!

The manager market is our favourite new feature. Across the globe, bosses can be poached, sacked, or choose to resign. Be sure to add clubs to your Watchlist who you may wish to manage in the future. Also note that AI-controlled managers install their tactical vision after joining a new club, adding variety to your opponents over the long-term.

Every player in FC 26 has a skill moves star rating of 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. As outlined in our FC 26 review, these are now shown onscreen just below a player's name bar. One-star players can only deploy a limited set of skill moves, while five-star players are able to utilise all moves in that category – and the four skill levels below them, too. 1 Star Skill Moves

These are the basic tricks that every player in the entire database can pull off – even goalkeepers.

What are FC 26 chemistry styles?

There are 24 unique FC 26 chemistry styles cards, exclusive to Ultimate Team. All of these can be found in packs or on the transfer market, with those that affect Pace tending to be the most expensive. 22 of the cards upgrade specific attributes, while GK Basic and Basic reset players to their base stats – for instance, if you've bought a player item with a different chemistry style assigned to it.

Once deployed, each chemistry style buffs either two or three of the main six attributes found on a player item. To purchase chemistry styles, head into Ultimate Team and select the Transfer Market tab. Click one tab over to Consumables, and cycle 'Player Chemistry Styles' into the Consumable Type panel.

Is Goodison Park in FC 26?

Yes – amazingly, both Everton's old and new stadiums are in FC 26. That's because the club's ladies team still play at Goodison Park, meaning fans can enjoy matches both there and in the 52,000-capacity Hill Dickinson Stadium. It's one of a few curious notes surrounding FC 26 stadiums. For instance, three have undergone rebuilds: Estadi Mallorca Son Moix (Real Mallorca), Fratton Park (Portsmouth), and Stamford Bridge (Chelsea). Four old-school FIFA originals have also had a makeover: Union Park Stadium, Stade Municipal, Stadio Classico, and Molton Road.

Each year, a significant portion of the gaming community serves its verdict on the new FIFA – sorry, FC – before they've even kicked a licensed ball in anger. (Admit it, you've already glanced at the above score and decreed it right or wrong.) In an attempt to address those preconceptions, EA Vancouver has built EA FC 26 around community feedback, with intriguing results. It's both faster, and slower. It's at times more intelligent, at others stupider. It's both more fun, and more frustrating. Schrödinger's favorite football game, if you will.

Let's dig into game speed, because this is the most pronounced – and profound – change. In addition to customizable user sliders, FC 25 quietly implemented two gameplay presets: 'Classic' and 'Simulation'. A year on, they evolve into 'Competitive' and 'Authentic'. These make for a marked difference in how the match engine handles. The former is the basis of online play, and all about gamer skill. It's rapid, with the onus on trick-stick skills and goals, goals, goals, as user-controlled players race about unaffected by fatigue. 'Authentic', meanwhile, prevails offline, with believable weather interference, tiredness effects, and lifelike errors applied to shooting, passing, or heading.

Explosive Gunners

The focus on pace and attacking play has long been clamored for by Ultimate Team die-hards and influencers. And 'Competitive' gameplay certainly delivers on those fronts. You want high-scoring games, bossed by explosive wingers, twinkle-toed CAMs and ruthless STs? They're here. Those players and their team-mates are super responsive too, with deadly runs into space and fewer frustrations surrounding input delay. 1-0 to the Arsenal? Try 5-1, or 7-4, or 8-2 – all in slick and speedy HD.

Now consider the flip side. Even with some new jockey animations, defending is brutal, as team-mates regularly lose their shape to aid those attacking outcomes and big scores. For years I've set my Rivals and Weekend League teams up in 4-5-1 or 4-1-4-1 formations to soak up attacks and tire opponents, with the hope of nicking a decisive goal after they've subbed off their exhausted 95-Pace forward. Any notion of that in FC 26 is dead. Improved keepers, and the removal of 'tacklebacks', help a little, but keeping clean sheets is now miracle work. Indeed, keeping the opposition under two goals is miracle work.

It's a shame, as a swathe of off-field Ultimate Team frustrations have been ironed out. Rivals progression, complete with occasional bonuses, delights. Silver items matter again thanks to the return of live tournaments focussed on cards with a max-OVR of 74. Pack percentages remain controversial, but feel pleasingly generous, spitting out coins more frequently than in previous editions. Decent players, too: I've already packed Toni Kroos and Lionel Messi. GK Evolutions are similarly stellar. Plus EA seems cognizant of how power curve wrecks the mode by March every year, with fewer OP special items available off the bat, and Evo upgrades largely based around Roles and PlayStyles, rather than ratings increases. Promising.

Different grass

Those who do wish to defend capably are better served in offline fixtures, such as those found within manager career. Here, gameplay is more gently paced than any FC or FIFA in recent memory. Sprint speed and skills still have an effect, but so does the tactical set-up of your back four (or five), while myriad variables found in real football come into play. Wind changes the trajectory of clearances and crosses, and a wet pitch can see the ball skid on or slow down mid-dribble. Fatigue really matters, as do your substitutions.

Neat fan-requested developments flesh the mode out further. The new manager carousel sees bosses poached or sacked around the footballing world, and each brings their tactical set-up to their new club, injecting variety. Even better are random events which imbue personality, and happily disrupt the match-match-match-transfer grind. Controlling West Ham as Irons favourite Carlos Tevez my experience evolved regularly. A bank error saw my transfer budget halved from £64 million to £32 million. Kyle Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf were ruled out of a London derby at Arsenal after consuming 'dodgy food'. Mads Hermansen and Aaron Wan-Bissaka followed soon after thanks to a clash in training. I've lasted longer in the job than Graham Potter will, and am looking forward to what unfolds next.

If that isn't enough variety, all of this is fully customizable, too. At the outset you can manually assign points deductions and transfer embargoes for an extra challenge. Or play fresh short-term scenarios via Manager Live – such as building a new team of Galacticos around (Brazilian) Ronaldo, in order to unlock the Real Madrid 2002 Retro kit. A few legacy issues grate – the once-groundbreaking transfer negotiations cut-scenes have had their time – but the mix of authentic gameplay and off-field fun make manager career FC 26's most balanced, well-rounded mode.

Rush goalies

In its second year, five-a-side offering Rush has also been bolstered by quality-of-life improvements. FC 25's single biggest issue in this replacement for Volta was players rubber-banding their controller without being booted, and I've not encountered that issue once as yet. Derek Rae's commentary makes for a welcome alternative to the excitability of Fernando Palomo, while shorter celebrations, deeper chat options, and the opportunity to play as the keeper keep it neck and neck with Rematch on the small-sided kickabout front.

Fan-service touches are implemented outside of Rush, too. For all my frustrations with defending in 'Competitive' play, its new camera view helpfully showcases more of the pitch – and stadium too, increasing the sense of matchday atmosphere. Details such as seeing away fans celebrating in local pubs enhance it further.

UI changes aren't merely cosmetic, either. A second bar below your player name denotes his or her skill move rating and foot preference, and can be further customized, while accessibility features include a high-contrast mode that switches out traditional kits for single blocks of color.

For the majority, however, a new FC game all comes down to Ultimate Team – and this year it's going to prove more divisive than ever. Not, for once, because of its pack-opening mechanic, but those tweaks to gameplay speed, and fatigue, and any hope of smart, sound defensive play. The community has spoken, and EA has answered with all the pace and tricks and goals demanded of it. The move is, in one swoop, both understandable and deflating. Online, FC 26 is categorically not a game for the footballing purist – but how many of them are actually left?

How to redeem Volleyball Legends codes

To redeem Volleyball Legends codes, you need to start the experience through Roblox and then hit the orange Shop icon along the bottom of the screen. This will bring up the shop menu, where you can tap the purple Codes tab down the left hand side of the pop up to reach the code entry screen. Type the promo into the box, and then press the Use Code! button to redeem it. Note that you must be at least Level 15 before you can use codes in Volleyball Legends, though a warning on the screen will remind you of this if you don't meet the requirement.

After more than 15 years, the long-awaited Skate 4 (dubbed just "Skate" by Full Circle and EA) has finally arrived in Early Access – but even though skateboarding is what it's all about, it apparently isn't the quickest way to get around in-game.

The new Skate is here after over a decade of waiting, and although it's launched to "Mixed" reviews on Steam, it's safe to say that plenty of creative fans have been exploring the online multiplayer world of San Vansterdam – but not all of them are doing so atop their boards. In fact, the game teaches you how to engage in some good old parkour when on foot, but it's not meant to be your primary way of getting around. This is "Skate," after all.

That's not stopping players from doing so, however, and it turns out that rolling around the map without your board might be faster than actually riding it. As one fan points out in an online post, jumping and flipping is a more efficient way to traverse San Vansterdam (in terms of speed, anyway) than skateboarding. "Bro, what am I even playing rn?" they write. "Why is this faster than skating?" Attached is a clip of them zooming about in-game.

Their character's movements, albeit hilariously quick, are simple – They run, jump, and flip forward, constantly holding the thumbstick down so that they continuously somersault in the air. They're able to reach point B from point A in a matter of seconds, all without ever going on their skateboard. Comments under the video are almost as funny as the clip itself, with one person asking, "How did you already break the game?"

Another player follows up with their own video showing off their speedy moves, which are similar to the original poster's. "Man, you don't even know," writes the responding fan, their clip showing an amusing combination of mid-air diving and rolling. I suppose it's no longer Skate or Skate 4 – instead, we can call it "Parkour." Alternatively, we can liken it to an old Nintendo game. As one commenter puts it so aptly, this is "Super Mario 64 tech."
