Paramount CEO Brian Robbins has revealed a new animation strategy for the studio – and Guillermo del Toro isn't a fan. 

Speaking to Variety, Robbins commented: "We're not going to release an expensive original animated movie and just pray people will come." Original animated film Under the Boardwalk has been shifted from a theatrical release to a Paramount Plus streaming debut, while upcoming releases will focus on recognizable IP that millennials grew up with, like SpongeBob SquarePants and Avatar: The Last Airbender, in the belief that the films will appeal to them.

Paramount Picture's next animated movie to release theatrically is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which lands this August 2. A sequel and a spin-off TV show are both already in the works.

"It's not about Disney and Pixar anymore," added Robbins, referencing Lightyear and Elemental's box office performances. "People are looking for animated movies that are irreverent and have a comedic point of view."

Del Toro, though, was not impressed with the news, taking to Twitter to succinctly share his thoughts: "Dear Lord-" The director's animated take on Pinocchio won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature earlier this year. 

"This is an ignorant attitude," wrote The Lego Movie director Christopher Miller (he also co-wrote Across the Spider-Verse and produced The Mitchells vs. The Machines). "No studio head would say they wouldn't make an original drama, or action movie, or biopic, or comedy, or wouldn't have made Avatar. To suggest animation alone needs to be IP is absurd."

Pixar's latest release Elemental may have faltered right out of the gate, but the film has proved to have long legs at the box office – ultimately outgrossing Warner Bros.'s big-budget superhero flick The Flash. Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, The Game, and Queen of the Universe have all been canceled at Paramount Plus and will be removed from the streaming platform.

"The Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe, and The Game have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service," a Paramount+ spokesperson said. "We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programs, and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors."

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is a prequel series to Grease, taking place four years before Danny met Sandy. Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated series that follows a group of young aliens who find an abandoned starship – it also aired on Nickelodeon. The Game, a revival series based on The CW/BET series of the same name about pro football players and their partners, ran for two seasons prior to cancellation. Queen of the Universe is a drag queen singing competition that also ran for two seasons.

Deadline reports that the studios are planning to shop them to rival broadcasters and streamers.

Paramount Plus also recently removed the shows Coyote, No Activity, Guilty Party, The Harper House, The Real World, and The Twilight Zone. The streamer is in the process of merging with Showtime, which is set to happen later this month.

Yellowstone is officially ending with season 5 at Paramount. Days after it was confirmed that Kevin Costner was hanging up his cowboy hat, The Hollywood Reporter confirms that this will be the final run of episodes.

The final episodes of Taylor Sheridan's hugely popular series will begin airing in November as viewers prepare to say goodbye to this iteration of the Dutton family. However, given the ongoing WGA strikes, it's not yet clear whether this will shift.

There is some good news for fans of the series though as a sequel has been commissioned. Reportedly given a straight-to-series order, the follow-up will stream on Paramount Plus. 

No talent is attached to the show yet, but Deadlineis reporting that Matthew McConaughey is likely to star. They first reported the news in February but he's still apparently in talks for the untitled series.

However, it's currently unclear if the rest of the Dutton family will remain on for that, or if they're also leaving the Montana ranch. Among them are regulars Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, and Gil Birmingham. We'll have to wait and see for news on their futures.

In the meantime, there are plenty of other Yellowstone spin-offs still around too, including 1883 and 1923, as well as the upcoming Bass Reeves and Yellowstone 6666.

Paramount Plus has ordered a TV series based on the 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest.

The Star Trek parody, directed by Dean Parisot (Bill & Ted Face the Music), follows the cast of a fictional sci-fi TV series who become tangled in real intergalactic conflict after aliens believe the show is an accurate documentary. The star-studded cast included Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Justin Long, Missi Pyle, High School Musical's Corbin Bleu, and Rainn Wilson in his feature-length debut.

The upcoming TV series is executive produced by the movie's producer Mark Johnson via his Gran Via Productions banner.

Galaxy Quest was a modest box office success, grossing $90 million against a budget of $45 million, and was nominated for 10 Saturn Awards, with Tim Allen taking home Best Actor, and won a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation as well as the Nebula Award for Best Script.

Per Deadline, a TV show based on the movie has been in production for over eight years. The initial concept was a sequel series with the same cast, originally set to premiere on Amazon, though development halted after Alan Rickman passed away in 2016.

The news comes just after Paramount Plus ordered a 'movie event' centered on Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek: Discovery character, cementing the streaming platform as the official streaming hub for all things Star Trek.

Paramount Plus has greenlit Star Trek: Section 31, starring Michelle Yeoh.

In the film, Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Yeoh) joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past. Yeoh first originated the role in Star Trek: Discovery season 1.

"I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long," Yeoh said in a statement. "Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched."

The actor played Captain Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, who was killed off before returning as her mirror-verse counterpart Emperor Georgiou.

Continued Yeoh: "To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!"

Star Trek: Section 31 was first announced over four years ago as a spin-off series. Paramount Streaming Chief Programming Officer Tanya Giles teased back in January that the project was still in development.

Section 31 is a covert intelligence and defense organization working on behalf of the United Federation of Planets. First announced in 2019, the series was originally meant to begin production after work had finished on Star Trek: Discovery season 3, but this was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yellowjackets season 2 has reached its conclusion on Paramount Plus, with the finale dropping on May 26 – well, sort of. Paramount Plus and Showtime are merging into a single entity, which will be known (appropriately enough) as Paramount Plus with Showtime.

Both the premium tier of Paramount Plus and the Showtime network on television will now be known as Paramount Plus with Showtime. That's according to The Hollywood Reporter, which obtained a memo sent from Paramount CEO Bob Bakish announcing the change to staff. There's no word on what pricing changes may come for the streaming service when the two branches merge.

The premium tier of Paramount Plus is currently $10 USD per month, and is ad-free in contrast to the $5 per month essential tier. While Paramount Plus and Showtime are currently separate services with separate apps, there is a bundle that includes both: $12 a month with ads or $15 ad-free.

Chris McCarthy, who will be overseeing the Showtime studio and channel, hinted at some show cancellations, saying in his own memo "we will divert investment away from areas that are underperforming and that account for less than 10% of our views. We have already begun conversations with our production partners about what content makes sense moving forward and which shows have franchise potential." However, McCarthy noted several specific shows as strong performers, so it seems the likes of Yellowjackets season 2 will remain safe.

Bakish seemingly acknowledged the possibility of layoffs for staff in his memo, saying "we know this change brings uncertainty for the teams working on these brands and businesses. We are committed to being as transparent and thoughtful as possible throughout this process, and we expect to share additional details in the coming weeks."

Paramount has finally revealed when Yellowstone season 5 part 2 is set to premiere  – though unfortunately, fans still have a bit of a wait until the Kevin Costner-led show returns.

Filming was paused while the WGA writers' strike and the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike was ongoing, so viewers have had their patience tested when it comes to the next batch of episodes. Doubly so, when they learned that the series wouldn't continue beyond the end of its current chapter in May 2023.

When does Yellowstone season 5 return to Paramount Network and Paramount Plus?  

Yellowstone season 5 episode 9 will air on the Paramount Network on Sunday, November 10. It'll air the following day in the UK.

This is much later than the previous plan for the show's final episode. In a trailer earlier this year, it was announced that it would return in summer 2023. Then another report from Deadline, it was announced the show would be back in November 2023. Now, we know, it's a year later.

The delays were likely caused by the strikes, as actor Luke Grimes alluded to in an interview with People back in July 2023. "We have not [started filming the second half of season five] because of the writers’ strike," he explained. "I think we would be if it weren't for that. But that takes precedence over everything. They got to get that all sorted, and then we'll be getting after it."

Luckily, filming is back on as of May 2024, which is a very positive update (via Digital Spy). 

When it does come back, it will likely continue to air on Sunday evenings at 8pm ET/PT. Viewers will need to have a cable subscription that includes the channel. If you have one, you will also be able to stream the show online at ParamountNetwork.com with your cable account details.

It will not be immediately available on Paramount Plus, Hulu, or Netflix in the US. Other options for watching the show include subscriptions to places like Sling TV or Fubo TV, which have packages that include the Paramount Network channel. 

Viewers in the UK will not have to wait much longer when the show returns in the US. The new episodes will air on Mondays on Paramount Plus from midnight GMT, as this is when new content is usually uploaded. In order to watch Yellowstone season 5, you will need a Paramount Plus subscription, which costs £6.99 per month.

A recent update on Top Gun: Maverick's streaming plans may have grounded any hope of seeing it at home anytime soon, but there's still reason to be optimistic that Maverick will be flying to on-demand before the year is out.

Below, we'll dive into when the Top Gun sequel might be streaming on Paramount Plus. We'll take into account recent industry trends and Paramount's previous plans to help provide a clearer picture for when 2022's biggest movie is coming home.

When is Top Gun: Maverick releasing on streaming?

Nothing official on Top Gun: Maverick coming to Paramount Plus just yet. While the likes of The Lost City and Sonic the Hedgheog 2 spin-dashed their way onto the streamer just a shade over 45 days from their theatrical release, Tom Cruise’s big-budget blockbuster is set to take the opposite approach.

According to Puck (H/T IndieWire), the film is very much locked-in to an exclusive 120-day theatrical window. That means it wouldn’t come to streaming, nor would it be available to rent or buy on digital storefronts, until that period has elapsed. 

Top Gun: Maverick was released on May 27. If the 120-day window holds, it won’t stream on Paramount Plus until September 24 at the earliest. That's quite a wait, but undoubtedly worth it from the perspective of Tom Cruise and those looking to maintain the cinema experience for as long as possible. It should also be available in both the UK and Europe, given the streamer's launch in the region on June 22.

Another update, though, suggests that 120-day window could be shortened.

"The last I saw with Paramount was that the window is 120 days, but Paramount would like to go back to Tom Cruise and negotiate a shorter window in order to capture some of the home video revenue, whether that's on premium video on demand, whether it's on their streaming service Paramount Plus, yet to be determined," Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni said on his podcast, The Town with Matthew Belloni. 

If that's the case, it could aim for around 90 days in August but, with the filming nearing $1 billion at the box office, there's no real incentive for Cruise to negotiate anything before 120 days.

Paramount Plus has hit the UK, with the streaming service launching on our shores some 15 months after it first spun off from CBS All Access in the US. That means a whole vault of new content just opened up, so it's time to sack off the sun and check out the delights of this new streamer. 

The Paramount Plus UK price is £6.99 per month - decidedly cheaper than other options from Netflix (£10.99), Now (£9.99) and Disney Plus (£7.99). You can also pick up an annual subscription for £69.90 - a saving of roughly 16% over the month to month price. At the moment, you can watch Paramount Plus in the UK from your phone, browser, Roku, Google Chromecast, Amazon account, or Samsung TV platform (we're still awaiting word from Virgin as to when a native app will be available). However, Sky customers don't need to worry about all that.

Paramount Plus is free for Sky Cinema members, with the service included in the bundle from day one. To watch via Sky, simply head over to the Sky Cinema channel on your Sky box. It's worth noting, though, that those who have purchased a pass via Now TV will not be eligible for this freebie.

Instead, if you're looking to watch Paramount Plus for free in the UK, you'll need to join the rest of us in a seven day free trial - currently available for all new customers (so everyone).

What's on Paramount Plus?

Paramount Plus has had a while to build up a bank of content before heading over to the UK, which means there's plenty to sink your teeth into right from the start. The service pulls together shows from a range of networks; MTV, Comedy Central, Showtime, Paramount Pictures, and Nickelodeon. Highlights include the new Halo TV series, all three seasons of Yellowstone (not to be confused with another item on the roster, Yellowjackets), Star Trek, and Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber. 

Should you switch to Paramount Plus?

If you've exhausted your Netflix watch list, scoured Prime Video's free offerings, and grown tired of hopping between Now TV passes, it might be worth checking out this new selection of shows and movies. Paramount Plus is well priced in the UK, compared to other services. That £6.99 monthly cost undercuts everyone apart from Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Hayu, and offers a solid wealth of content for your cash as well.  

With a seven day free trial up for grabs, there's nothing stopping you from sampling the delights before you cancel your previous service as well. However, there's a slight catch here. 

Viewers are only able to watch Paramount Plus in the UK in Full HD resolution, with 5.1 sound at the moment. Over in the US, 4K resolution and Dolby Atmos support is reserved for a premium tier of membership (for around $5 more per month), a tier that hasn't yet launched over the pond. This will likely be added to the offering in the future, but if you want to make the most of your shiny 4K TV it might be worth diving back into other services' back catalogues for now.

Many streamers have already raised their prices in 2023, so what about Paramount Plus? Is Paramount Plus' price staying the same? Yes, thankfully. For the time being, the cheapest option comes in at a very competitive $4.99 a month. Not to mention, you can still try Paramount Plus for nothing courtesy of a free trial – a rare offering in this day and age, considering many free trials have been scrapped in recent years.

Not only that, but UK residents now have access to Paramount Plus as of June 2022 with the streamer available for the slightly more expensive price of £6.99 per month or £69.90 per year. Both the US and the UK have annual memberships that will save you some cash, though. 

Something also worth noting is that if you're a Sky Cinema subscriber you'll be able to watch Paramount Plus in the UK at no extra cost. This doesn't apply to Now TV subscriptions as you won't be able to access the full roster of titles, with only some being included in the membership.

Taking over from CBS All Access in 2021, the Paramount Plus price now encompasses a massive range of channels and content. Of course, Paramount Pictures and CBS are both included in the package, but you can also get access to the likes of Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, and more. 

Between them, you'll be able to stream heavy hitters like Ru Paul's Drag Race All Stars, Tulsa King, Star Trek: Discovery, 1923, Spongebob Squarepants, NCIS and The Offer. Paramount Plus price explained

Essential (ads) | $4.99 per month / $49.99 per year 

The Essential plan is the cheapest Paramount Plus subscription, coming in at just under $5 a month. The annual plan then lets you get the same access for 16% cheaper a year. You're picking up all the same channels and getting access to all the standard on-demand content here, but saving some cash by putting up with"limited commercial interruptions" every now and then. It's worth noting that you won't receive live regional CBS broadcasting with this option, though. 

Premium (ad-free)| $9.99 per month / $99.99 per year

You can get rid of those pesky ads by opting for the Premium plan at $9.99 a month or picking up an annual subscription of $99.99 a year. That's a 16% saving. It's also worth being aware that live TV streams will still have ads, and a few shows include "brief promotional interruptions" for upcoming Paramount Plus programming.

Paramount Plus Premium (ad-free) with Showtime | $11.99 per month / $119.99 per year

Get Paramount Plus Premium and Showtime for a total cost of $11.99 a month or $119.99 a year to save 16%. This is a new bundle that makes the Paramount Plus Essential with Showtime bundle redundant considering it's the same price. By signing up for this one, you're getting ad-free for the same cost.

Is there a Paramount Plus free trial?

A seven-day Paramount Plus free trial is available to new subscribers for either tier. Make sure to cancel before the trial period is up if you don't wish to purchase a subscription, as your credit card will be charged the usual amount for that particular tier.

Additionally, Paramount Plus occasionally offers 30-day free trials. The latest was launched in April and required new subscribers to enter "PICARD" via the coupon box with a valid email address. The deal ended on April 30th, so we'll keep an eye out for any new offers.

What Paramount Plus movies and shows are there?

The Paramount Plus catalog of films has changed quite a bit since launch, losing some Marvel movies and others but has added newer releases straight out of the cinema like the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and Dungeons and Dragons film starring Chris Pine. It's also increased its original programming with Rabbit Hole starring Kiefer Sutherland and the new Yellowstone spinoffs 1923 with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren making waves. 

A selection of the films available now include: Scream VI, Top Gun: Maverick, Babylon, A Quiet Place, A Quiet Place Part II, Smile, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Wrath of Man, Mean Girls, The Lost City, The Breakfast Club, Indiana Jones, Interstellar, Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 and The Wolf of Wall Street. Paramount Plus-exclusive films include remakes of Paranormal Activity and Pet Sematary, as well as original movies based on Beavis & Butthead, Workaholics, and SpongeBob SquarePants.  

Meanwhile, the selection of television series on Paramount Plus features CBS All Access carryovers like Cheers, Reno 911!, Perry Mason, I Love Lucy and the NCIS franchise. It also has the likes of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, Tulsa King, 1883 (another Yellowstone spinoff), Star Trek: Discovery, Ink Master, The Good Fight, Spongebob Squarepants, Halo, and The Offer. 

Its latest big show is Fatal Attraction starring Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan. 

Paramount Plus live sports

Paramount Plus will broadcast over 1,000 live sports events from around the world ranging from regular-season matches to playoff and championship games. Perhaps the most notable of Paramount Plus' live sports offerings are the NFL on CBS and the Emmy-winning series Inside the NFL, which is moving from Showtime.

Paramount Plus has also secured exclusive English-language rights to international football (soccer) leagues in the UEFA, Concacaf, Argentina's Liga Profesional de Fútbol, and Brazil's Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.

Other live sports on Paramount Plus include NCAA March Madness, the PGA Tour and The Masters, and the National Women's Soccer League.

Paramount Plus channels

Paramount Plus offers approximately 30,00 shows from numerous channels comprising on-demand hubs based on ViacomCBS brands like Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, BET,  MTV, and The Smithsonian Channel.

News channels on Paramount Plus will consist of 24-hour news service CBSN, CBS Sports HQ, ET Live, and live streams of local CBS affiliates.

Where can I watch Paramount Plus?

Paramount Plus is supported by the same devices as CBS All Access:  Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast, PlayStation and Xbox, and select Smart TVs.

Is Paramount Plus worth it?

With the number of contenders in the streaming wars continuing to grow, it's easy to become overwhelmed by the myriad platforms on the market right now. Paramount Plus, however, is at the very least an upgrade over CBS Access since it maintains the same competitive pricing but with thousands more shows and movies, highly-anticipated original content, recent theatrical releases, and live sports events from around the world. 

One area where Paramount Plus falls short is live TV, which is limited to local CBS affiliates plus a handful of niche offerings. If access to live TV is a must before cutting the cord, consider perusing the best Hulu prices for on-demand + live TV bundles. Alternatively, Fubo TV costs include over a hundred live TV channels plus a broader range of live sports. Of course, you'll be paying much more for Hulu or Fubo TV than Paramount Plus - but still less than traditional cable in all instances. Ultimately, it comes down to your preferences.

Regardless, you can give Paramount Plus a try at no cost thanks to its free trial offerings. This option will come in handy should you only want to binge-watch 1923 or stream Top Gun: Maverick now that it's out of the cinema.

Namco Bandai's announced it's distributing and co-publishing next year's Star Trek in a partnership with Paramount Pictures, which will be overseeing the game's development. With the inglorious grunt-work of actually making the game being handled by Bioshock 2/Darkness 2 dev Digital Extremes, the title modestly aims to leverage the storied Kirk/Spock pairing into “the ultimate co-op experience” sometime before next May, when the new movie's released. Do or do not, there is no try - isn't that what Star Trek says?

It's a fine week for Namco Bandai, with the company announcing an almost 50% growth in year-over-year profits – despite losing ground in sales outside of Japan, a failing the company aims to address with Western partnerships like the Star Trek deal. It's also announced the formation of a new internal studio, Namco Bandai Studio (what else would you call it?), to handle production of star franchises such as Tekken and Tales

The latter, you'll recall, has been orphaned since the closure last year of Tales Studio – but with Namco Bandai singling out Tales of Xilia as a key driver in last quarter's exceptional growth, the studio's staff will doubtless be well treated at their new home within the freshly-launched studio.
