Jeffrey Gattis, general manager for games at Amazon, hopes to see more people try its cloud gaming service Luna as consoles and PCs become eye-wateringly expensive.

Speaking with The Game Business, Gattis weighs up the increasing costs of gaming today. Component supply chains decimated by AI data centers forced even Valve's wealthy hand (as it refuses to sell hardware at a loss), leading to a flagrantly overpriced Steam Machine that would've been a proper hit with a sticker in the high three-digit range.

Now even Xbox is preemptively talking about how consoles have to adapt to the memory and storage market, in roughly the same way that a dinosaur must adapt to being on fire.

Gattis inherited the difficult task of getting people to know and care about Luna, which was announced in 2020 and swiftly forgotten. By baking it straight into Amazon Prime Video, Gattis says "we've 5x-ed our player base, albeit on a modest base," which is the kind of corporate speak that reveals a very modest starting audience.

But Gattis is optimistic about Luna and cloud gaming's future, especially in a world where the Steam Machine and rumored new-gen consoles cost "well over $1,000."

Cloud gaming has long been "a little bit of a solution in search of a problem," Gattis reflects, but that was in a world where core gaming was relatively affordable.

"Consoles, for the most part, have been relatively inexpensive until now," he says. "So our business is more about reaching more players and expanding the market, not trying to get people to give up their consoles or their gaming PC.

"Having said all that, we've seen the news. We saw the Steam Machine pricing opening at $1,000 US. We hear rumors about consoles, because of the RAM prices, pushing well over $1,000 in gen 10. So I do think you get to a point at which a lot more people will be in the consideration set for a cloud gaming solution just because of the sheer cost of buying dedicated hardware."

Gattis reckons there are "3 billion people in the world who play video games, yet there's only, depending on how you do the math, 300 million to 500 million dedicated hardware devices out in the wild."

In that difference of roughly 2.5 billion gamers, he sees the potential cloud gaming market of tomorrow – folks who don't have the time or money for the latest consoles or PC games, but do want to play something. And as long as they're comfortable with the limitations of cloud gaming licensing.

"Games can be big investments – to go buy a $70 game, to go through the download experience, to pair a controller, and then make an investment of hundreds of hours of time, in some cases, to complete one of these games," Gattis reasons, perhaps exaggerating the arduous toil of pairing a controller.

"There's people like me who love that. That's how I choose to spend my entertainment time. But I think most people fit into more of a bell curve, a more normal distribution. They spend some time watching television, they spend some time watching movies, and they like to play video games. I think that's where we see an opportunity to serve a group of people who I might argue haven't really been well-served because the console and PC companies are mostly focused on those hardcore players."

The big problem, of course, is that Amazon has struggled to get anything right in games. Its once-roaring MMO New World is dead, its Lord of the Rings MMO is reportedly dead, and Amazon Studios' primary exports so far have been layoffs and cancellations. It turns out all the money in the universe can't just magic games into being, so even if Luna was always meant to be a third-party game merchant, it's in untrustworthy hands in the eyes of many players.

Meanwhile: Amazon Games gutted amid 14,000 layoffs: work on first-party games and MMOs in particular scaled back, "casual and AI-focused games" a continued focus.

One of the best platformers in recent years – the adorably bouncy Poinpy – is back from the dead and is now totally free. And in case the delightfully moreish game missed you the first time around, it's now unshackled from its Netflix Games cell.

For those out of the loop, Poinpy became a critically-acclaimed fan-favorite when it came out in 2022 as an exclusive in the Netflix Games catalogue. As long as you had a regular Netflix subscription, you could play as much Poinpy as you liked alongside a suite of other games.

But an entire year ago, Poinpy was removed from the service due to the expiration of a licensing deal, leaving the our blobby green hero in limbo since it wasn't available on any other platform. Publisher Devolver Digital has now revived the game and put it onto mobile storefronts for free – no purchase or Netflix account required.

Poinpy is now available to download on the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. Just don't let that 'In-App Purchases' note scare you off. "Poinpy is 100% free! There are no ads and no purchases required to play. If you love Poinpy and want to support the developer, please leave a tip," the storefront description explains.

That developer is Moppin, otherwise known as Ojiro Fumoto, who also made the equally excellent roguelike Downwell and contributed to UFO 50. Poinpy serves as somewhat of an answer to Downwell, however – instead of descending into a seemingly never-ending cavern of deadly creatures, Poinpy has you flicking the screen to send our hero flying up and up and up, bouncing on walls, off of enemies, and toward colorful fruit in the hopes of satiating the always-hungry, even bigger cat-like blob who's always licking its lips on the bottom of the screen. A true to life feline, that is.

Rationing a limited number of jumps per level, chaining together bounces to elongate your airtime, and finding oh so many secrets is an absolute blast. The whole thing feels so tactile to play and looks great, too, so now's your chance.

Persona and Shin Megami Tensei artist Kazuma Kaneko says he won't be using generative AI in his next game.

Kaneko previously worked at Atlus from 1988, with his most recent collaboration with the company being the Demon design for 2024's Metaphor: ReFantazio. Alongside that he also did freelance work, designing a boss for Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner and the devil trigger designs for Dante and Vergil in Devil May Cry 3 – with his latest game Kazuma Kaneko's Tsukuyomi receiving a Devil May Cry collab.

Now though, he works with mobile game developer COLOPL, and released his first game with the studio in 2025. That game was Tsukuyomi: The Divine Hunter, a dungeon-crawling roguelike where you battle with the heart of the cards. These cards use AI generated artwork, however, the art isn't based on his previous work at Atlus. Rather, he trained an AI model with new illustrations made during his time at COLOPL.

The game received a Mixed rating on Steam, with reviews calling the art "generally quite awful." Even the positive reviews say "the AI is slop, that's the fact."

Now though, Kaneko has responded to a question on Twitter (translated by Automaton) about his future projects, as he explains that he is preparing to kick off a project at COLOPL. However, he mentions that he won't be using any generative AI tools this time around, as well as clarifying: "While I did participate in the development of a game that uses AI mechanics, I did not use AI for my own artwork."

Ahead of the game's release, Kaneko spoke about the process, saying it kind of wasn't really worth it in the end, and that "to be honest, it's quicker for me to draw it myself from start to finish." An offline version of the game released earlier this year on Nintendo Switch, titled Kazuma Kaneko's Tsukuyomi, which ditched the AI generation system, while keeping some of the artwork it made in-game.

Given the increased output of AI slop in the world in general, naturally, some weren't really happy with an artist as renowned as Kaneko using generative AI – even if it was used somewhat more ethically than your standard machine models, theoretically removing plagiarism concerns since it was taught using Kaneko's original art. However, shortly after launch, the game began generating art that looked suspiciously similar to copyrighted works like Disney's Frozen and Superman, so perhaps not.

Alpha Dog Games – a studio shuttered by Microsoft two years ago – has reemerged as an independent studio.

Two years ago – in what was the beginning of Microsoft's apparent new trend of yearly summer layoffs – Microsoft shut down Prey developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and Mighty Doom developer Alpha Dog Games, as well as folding Roundhouse Games into ZeniMax Online Studios. While Tango Gameworks was eventually revived by PUBG publisher Krafton, the other studios remained closed for the last two years.

However, out of nowhere, the LinkedIn profile (via Vice, spotted by regular LinkedIn sleuth Timur222 on Twitter) of the studio's founder, Shawn Woods was updated with the section under Alpha Dog Games saying "independently owned, again." Bethesda acquired the studio back in 2019, where it was then brought under the Microsoft banner following its purchase of ZeniMax.

While the update was reportedly only added to his profile recently, Woods' profile lists this tenure as "May 2025 – Present" suggesting that the studio actually went independent last year while Phil Spencer was still head of Xbox.

Earlier this month, Microsoft started its fifth batch of layoffs since spending $75 billion on acquiring Activision Blizzard in 2023, which resulted in Compulsion Games and Double Fine both going back to being independent developers, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs being purchased by currently unknown buyers, and Arkane "reviewing potential strategic options." And in 2024 – shortly after being purchased by Microsoft as a part of Activision – Crash Bandicoot and Spyro developer Toys For Bob went independent.

At the time of writing, "Independently owned, again," is the extent of what Woods has had to say about the return of Alpha Dog Games, so it's unclear what the studio is working on. While Microsoft's layoffs have done untold damage with the amount of developers now looking for work and the years of knowledge leaving the industry due to an ever-increasing lack of opportunity, it's a little glimmer of light to see studios retaining their independence.

A former Rockstar Games producer says the famed studio is careful to scrub cut content from its game files in an effort to avoid accidentally shipping anything it doesn't want the public to lay eyes on, and we can thank the GTA San Andreas Hot Coffee scandal for that.

For context, more than two decades ago, GTA San Andreas and Rockstar Games found themselves in the middle of a scorching scandal. The open-world game maker at one point developed a sexually explicit minigame for 2004's San Andreas, but eventually decided to scrap the idea before launch to avoid getting slapped with an 'Adults Only' rating that would keep the game out of most US retailers.

But instead of outright bleaching the minigame off the game's files, the GTA San Andreas devs simply made it inaccessible to players. That didn't stop the modding community from finding the hidden code come launch, enabling the so-called Hot Coffee minigame, and then kickstarting a wave of legal backlash against Rockstar. The controversy got so loud, the studio had to reissue a version of the game devoid of Hot Coffee.

Speaking to Kiwi Talkz, former Rockstar Games lead producer John Ricchio said the scandal made the studio much more careful about how it handles cut content. "One of the things after Hot Coffee, obviously having things on the disc is dangerous," he explains. "You don't want to necessarily have stuff on the disc that people can find."

Ricchio goes on to say that Rockstar now puts in "a huge effort" to "strip everything that is not included out of the game," and ensure that unintended content doesn't accidentally ship, even if it's hidden in the game's code.

On the topic of cut content, Ricchio shares that it's not very common for Rockstar Games to reuse scrapped ideas in future games. An exception is GTA 4, which actually includes some levels that originally began life in a different unannounced and eventually-canceled game. Transferring code or scripting tools just depends on how much the tech has changed from game to game. Maybe don't expect GTA 6 to include anything left on GTA 5's cutting room floor, then.

Final Fantasy 14's planned mobile port – a release that Square Enix hoped for the world to see after its launch in China – is now off the table entirely, apparently.

In case you're out of the loop on Final Fantasy 14 Mobile, it first kicked off years ago when "a small team of die-hard" fans proposed the idea to MMO director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida, "armed with a 100-page proposal" – a proposal that interested the lead, to say the least.

It's largely been off the radar since its announcement and development at Tencent, however, with little news popping up about it aside from its release last summer in China. Now, sadly, it seems it won't be coming out anywhere else – even though the rest of the world was set to see Final Fantasy 14 Mobile sometime after that initial region-exclusive release. And, to top the disappointing news off, the Chinese edition is going offline as well.

Square Enix confirms as much in a new announcement on the canceled project's official website, first looking back at the mobile port's June 2025 launch in China.

"On the launch day of Final Fantasy 14 Mobile (Chinese Edition) in the Chinese mainland, we said, 'Resonate with the Light, and blaze as one,' and promised that the adventure had just begun. Over this time, it is you who have truly brought 'Mobile Eorzea' to life. Every suggestion you shared on gameplay, experiences, and features guided us to build the game world."

It's heartwarming to hear, but it wasn't enough to save the port, it seems.

"Today, however, we must regretfully share an important announcement. Due to adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment, Tencent and Square Enix have, through amicable negotiation, decided to terminate the licensing agreement for Final Fantasy 14 Mobile (Chinese Edition)."

The game will go offline in China on September 30 this year – and, once again, will not be coming overseas.

As Square Enix states, "To everyone who has been looking forward to the global version, we also offer our sincere apologies for being unable to meet your expectations" – which, you know, makes it pretty clear this is indeed the end end of Final Fantasy 14 Mobile.

Unfortunately, it's not the first Square Enix or Final Fantasy title on mobile devices to bite the dust. The Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles remaster went down last year.

Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is also shutting down after three years, much to fans' dismay. At least we've got Evercold to look forward to, I suppose – and, you know, the Nintendo Switch 2 port, which arrives next month with a free trial.

It's disappointing to learn that the MMO seemingly won't ever be available to play via our mobile phones, but perhaps it's for the best. I'm not sure I can imagine tackling a Savage on my Samsung Galaxy, honestly.

Final Fantasy 14 hit with yet another stalking mod, not even 2 weeks after the MMO's last one shut down.

Compact gaming tablets are few and far between; this is a niche within a mobile gaming niche after all. But, if the prices of the best gaming handhelds have you down and you're not quite ready to swap to one of the best gaming phones, they do represent a growing area of interest.

RedMagic turned its attention to this 9-inch market with the original Astra slab last year. That was a high-powered OLED device ready to take on both portable and, to an extent, console performance. Now it's back with a boosted Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, additional liquid cooling, a faster refresh rate... and a higher starting price, as is the way with most tech in 2026.

The RedMagic Astra 2 is a little marred by its predecessor's power. After all, most thumb-tappers and emulation systems won't need much more than the original Snapdragon 8 Elite just yet. Considering the price jump from a base $499 model to a 12GB / 256GB $749 version in 2026, those extra new additions to the overall experience are going to need to pull their weight.

RedMagic Astra 2 Performance

In its synthetic benchmarks, the RedMagic Astra 2 initially proves itself with slightly higher Wild Life Extreme and Solar Bay performance compared to its predecessor. First runs look good, with the RedMagic Astra 2 coming in roughly 1,000 points in the lead. I scored 7,212 in my first Wild Life Extreme test and 12,106 in the first Solar Bay run. Things get a little spicy after that, though.

Repeated runs brought those numbers way down, to the point where the system averaged 6,705 in Wild Life Extreme and 10,677 in Solar Bay (across all three runs), dropping it below the previous generation on the latter. That, while the system was growing noticeably hotter.

RedMagic states its new liquid cooling tech is an advancement on what came before, but it doesn't feel like it between the hands. More intensive runs like this quickly proved too uncomfortable to keep hold of, something I noticed with more demanding games like Call of Duty: Mobile as well. It looks pretty running across the back panel, but something seems to be awry here. After a cooldown, Solar Bay ran to a final score of 13,152.

I was curious, then, to see what the Wild Life Extreme Stress Test revealed. Without that liquid cooling enabled, the system showed a 43.9% stability score, with the final loop operating at less than half the performance of the first. With RedMagic's new system in full force, things ran a little smoother, jumping up to 65.7% stability. That's a good nod in the direction of the objectively neat liquid running across the back of the device, but sustained performance does drop from what I expected from the invigorated system.

What I loved about the RedMagic Astra 2

All about that display

The OLED panels RedMagic uses in its Android devices is among one of the more impressive I come across day to day. Its incredibly vivid sensibilities handle bright pops of color with a serious punch, keeping everything crisp and sharp in the process. The smaller screen keeps everything beautifully tight as well, with stringent color handling and razor sharp detailing.

It may be the same panel as we saw last year (albeit running at a faster 185Hz refresh rate) but it's certainly a screen to be proud of.

Compact form factor

I said it last year, and I'll say it again, the 9-inch design of the RedMagic Astra 2 gives it a fantastic feel in the hands, while still affording a nicely dense display space and keeping controls at your fingertips. On-screen buttons and thumbsticks feel easily reachable and weight is kept to a manageable 363g (slightly lighter than the original's 370g) to keep fatigue at bay.

It's the perfect size to combine a more immersive gaming and streaming experience than you'll find from a phone, without proving too unwieldy for either the hands or your bag.

Dual ports

There are two USB-C connections here, designed for charging and utilizing accessories at the same time. We've still got the beefier connection on the right side (frustratingly it's still off-center, so you'll be relying on Bluetooth for any mobile controllers you've got going on) as well as a new port on the lower lip.

Massive battery

Yes, larger 13-inch tablets will generally run with a 9,000-odd mAh battery, but more compact options typically stick at around 5,00mAh. That's why the 8,300mAh charge in the RedMagic Astra 2 stands so tall. This isn't a chunky device, but it's still sparring with some of the more endurance-focused tablets on the market.

In a week of more casual use (emulation gameplay, a few CoD Mobile rounds, YouTube sessions, and web browsing) I only needed to charge the tablet once. Considering my aging iPad Air needs to be plugged in every few nights, that's a win. Of course, this is straight out of the box - but the capacity of that charge means that, even with some degradation over time, you're still looking at an all-dayer here.

Of course, more demanding games are going to drain your system. I noticed a 20% drop during an hour or so of more intensive runs at full brightness.

Packed Game Space

RedMagic's Game Space software is where it keeps all its unique gaming-focused bonuses. Flipping the familiar red toggle automatically launches this completely separate system, but this is far more than a game launcher. Like its phones, RedMagic uses this space for all your saved gameplay, in-depth performance and control settings, and accessory connections. Dive a little deeper into plugins and you'll find options for additional rumble haptics, motion and gesture controls, specific enemy filters to improve visibility, and additional screen map modes.

There's a whole world of tweaks and adjustments to make your favorite games run better and, crucially, be more enjoyable here. But this is also where you'll find my second favorite software feature: Gravity X.

This is what changes the RedMagic Astra 2 from a gaming tablet to a potentially console-like experience. Connect the device to your monitor, pair up your keyboard, mouse, or controller, and you're essentially getting a "dockable" experience for big screen and on-the-go play.

What to consider about the RedMagic Astra 2

Hands still get in the way of speakers

This was a design concern I had with the original model, and it doesn't look like it's been rectified in the Astra 2. The speaker grills, while nice and powerful, are located on the top and bottom panels of the tablet. In portrait mode, that's fine, but in landscape mode, the natural resting position of the hands can often cover some or, when reaching towards the top of the screen) all of these little dots. That means audio quickly becomes muffled when that grip is adjusted.

Still no memory card slot

Like the Astra before it, the latest iteration still keeps that memory card slot at bay. That's a little frustrating for emulation purposes, or if you also need a tablet for everyday productivity and media markups. While mobile releases typically don't take up too much space, with a Genshin Impact download coming in at roughly 40GB right now, that 256GB version may start to struggle in the future. Your saved screenshots and video captures will all be contributing to that load, after all.

Some noticeable whine

Now this is one that seems to be new for the RedMagic Astra 2. The system displays a surprising amount of coil whine when running more demanding titles in higher settings. It's not necessarily loud enough to be audible when the speakers are cranked, but it's a considerable side effect when no audio is playing.

Should you buy the RedMagic Astra 2?

Even without the performance concerns, I'd be hesitant to recommend the RedMagic Astra 2 while the previous generation model is still around. You're looking at a hefty markup over the original price tag for a minor performance bump, a new cooling system that doesn't quite have the benefits you may expect, and a higher refresh rate display that the vast majority of games aren't equipped to deal with.

Unfortunately, the original RedMagic Astra is now unavailable in the US (the UK still has some stock left). That being the case, this is likely the definitive Android experience for now, especially with an additional cooler applied. After all, there's an incredible amount of power packed into this compact, sturdy chassis, hiding behind a gorgeous display. We're still talking about power that the vast majority of titles won't even stress. It's just a shame its costs have ballooned higher than its processing upgrades.

How I tested the RedMagic Astra 2

I used the RedMagic Astra 2 as my daily driver for mobile gaming, game streaming, emulation, YouTube, movies and TV shows for two weeks. I primarily played across my PSP collection, while spending a good amount of time in Call of Duty Mobile and sprinkling in a few Marvel Snap matches. I performed dedicated tests across 3D Mark's Wild Life Extreme and Solar Bay tests, running each one three times before taking a final score. I also ran two Wild Life Extreme Stress Tests. Genshin Impact's free 5-star selector, To Temper Thyself and Journey Far, will begin its fifth cycle on August 10, loosely coinciding with the expected release date of update 7.0 and the Snezhnaya region. The milestone, tucked away in the game's new event timeline, is significant, as it marks the end of the giveaway's four-part debut cycle and could open it up to changes including new characters being added into the rotation.

To Temper Thyself and Journey Far lets Genshin Impact players obtain free Constellations for 5-star characters they already own by repeatedly completing in-game tasks. Each cycle is 12 weeks long, and you have to log eight completed weeks in that time to earn a Constellation (among other rewards), completing at least five days of tasks each week.

The other catch is that you can't redeem the same character multiple times to stack up Constellations. Most people use the event to take a character with no Constellations to "C1," unlocking the first passive ability normally acquired by pulling duplicates of that character. But if you had a character at C1, you could also use a freebie to upgrade them to C2, and so on.

With the next cycle of To Temper Thyself and Journey Far beginning, players will seemingly be able to claim another four free Constellations in the year ahead. The question is whether the selection of characters will be updated in the Snezhnaya era – either expanded, with more characters becoming redeemable, or edited, with some characters rotating out.

Many players have expressed hopes that more and better characters will be added to this event following Snezhnaya's release. Yumemizuki Mizuki is a notable absentee as the only standard-banner character not available, though she is included in the dedicated standard 5-star selector that comes around with Genshin Impact's anniversary.

The timing of the event could leave the door open to more Sumeru or even some Fontaine-era characters becoming available, though I wouldn't expect the strongest of the lot to be given free Constellations like this. As one of the 11 people who pulled Chiori and Emilie, I don't think adding them to the list would be a threat to characters like Zibai or Nefer.

The original roster mostly consisted of old and outdated characters, like Kamisato Ayato and Eula, but some found new life with free Constellations. A C1 Shenhe is a more compelling teammate for the meta-relevant Cryo DPS Skirk, and a C1 Hu Tao isn't an unreasonable Pyro partner for modern support character packages like Columbina and Ineffa.

The value of the characters in the event has changed in the past year, which has seen the power level of new characters rise considerably alongside buffs to older units. For example, recent changes to Yae Miko have made her probably the best C1 pick in the entire game for her synergy with the Stellar Conduct reaction which much of the Snezhnaya cast will evidently be built around. Cyno, another Stellar Conduct target, is in a similar position. Likewise, characters like Albedo and Klee benefited from buffs to units with the Hexerei faction tag, making their early Constellations more appealing.

Valve has "a nice thing going on on PC," Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney says, but "they're missing out on a lot of opportunity" without the likes of Fortnite and Genshin Impact.

The past couple of weeks have been undeniably difficult for the video game industry, with Microsoft's plan to cut 3,200 employees at Xbox affecting various in-progress titles and studios – one of which is id Software, the team behind Doom.

In fact, id Software producer Andrew Willis has spoken at length about the layoffs and their impact across the board. A few days ago, he called them "incomprehensible," saying that small worker-owned studios are "the only path forward" from here.

Since then, he's continued to share his thoughts over on LinkedIn, writing, "The games industry must change if it is going to create art and franchises that have long-term sustainable value."

As the producer states, "Right now, it feels like the monopolies that control it are simply trying to extract as much goodwill and value (that took decades to build) as they can with little concern for the diminishing returns it's leading to. This is what happens when the people who control it (most Ivy League MBAs) do not play games, have never shipped a game, and fundamentally do not understand the industry they manage."

Willis then says, "You'll never get another WoW or Morrowind in the current climate" – a statement I can't help but feel rings especially true right now.

It's difficult to imagine such impactful games releasing when so many developers are struggling to mitigate the blow that widespread layoffs are leaving in their wake… and according to the producer, a lot of the issues stem from improper management.

"One thing that drives me nuts while watching the games industry be mismanaged is how everyone is looking for these massive 10x returns but is so focused on short-term growth that they essentially kill the goose before it can start laying eggs," as he explains.

"Disbanding and destroying a team after just one commercial letdown… makes it so you won't ever have a group that learns from their mistakes and perfects their next attempt (see Helldivers 2)."

With such quick trigger-pulling, Willis says studios will "never get that breakout success" they're after.

"These people would've turned down funding for George Lucas, Walt Disney, etc., and they wonder why they can't establish another colossal IP that pays dividends for decades. It's mind-boggling. There is lots wrong with the game industry, but I believe that one of the main things is that the people who manage it today have no idea how it actually works and refuse to learn or listen to the people that do."

The producer cites how wild it is to see spending on hardware and software go up, but layoffs never settling.

"It's really amazing how demand and consumer spending on video games continues to increase year over year, and yet the supply side continues to be extremely volatile for employees," he describes. "The failure to connect these two sides in a way that creates sustainable growth points to a direct failure of executive leadership – the consequences of which are only suffered by workers."

Willis signs off with one final thought: "The more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that the executive management class that controls the video game industry is so severely inept that they have somehow failed everyone all at once in every aspect – the shareholders, the consumers, the employees, and anyone who cares about games. They tried to sacrifice quality for profit, and they didn't even manage to generate the latter. Abysmal choices."

I'm inclined to agree with Willis on his point about a "breakout success" in this climate – it feels near impossible. Here's hoping the industry is able to heal a bit over time, and that we see less news regarding mass layoffs, too.

These days, it's hard to imagine a world without Stardew Valley. Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone's pixel perfect village escape is the modern standard bearer by which all other cozy and retro-styled games are measured against. Explicitly inspired by the early Harvest Moon games, Stardew Valley has ballooned in popularity beyond anyone's expectations since its release in 2016, taking on its own identity and inspiring countless other indie games of the cute and cuddly variety. None of this would be true, however, if Barone hadn't been able to salvage the game data from a computer crash that happened about a year into development.

PC Gamer recently republished a 2016 interview with Barone in which the solo developer brushed with the idea that his ragtag Harvest Moon-like could become a phenomenon. Barone couldn't have had any idea just how revolutionary Stardew Valley would one day become, but he had the foresight to know he was very lucky to recover from a PC crash that almost put Stardew Valley in a pixelated grave before it was ever born.

Barone told PC Gamer that the project was almost canceled when the PC he was using to develop the game unexpectedly crashed. Since he had no backups, Barone thought it was over for Stardew Valley, but was ultimately able to restore the project from the old hard drive and build a new rig.

"In retrospect, it feels crazy that it all worked out," he said. "The whole development was so sloppy. It was the most indie development you could imagine: no professional style at all, figuring it all out as I go, and just the scrappiest code you could imagine. I'm almost embarrassed to have other people look at my code!"

Barone's next game, Haunted Chocolatier, very much seems to be being built using the foundation laid down by Stardew Valley, and with Barone having all of that experience under his belt, not to mention a small team helping him put everything together, fans can expect a much smoother development process while they wait for the darker, sweeter follow-up.

You may or may not be aware that we got a new Final Fantasy 7 spin-off a few years ago. Yes, in addition to Rebirth and Remake. It's called Ever Crisis, and it's a gacha game retelling the whole franchise from the ground up, and if you haven't looked into it yet, you only have a limited window since it's now being shut down.

Square Enix has announced that Ever Crisis will cease operations on October 6, 2026, implying that maintaining the game has become untenable for one reason or another. "Since the launch of the App Store and Google Play versions on September 7, 2023, and the Steam version on December 6, 2023, we have worked to provide the best possible experience for our players," a statement from the company reads.

"After careful consideration, however, we have determined that it will be difficult to continue doing so and have made the decision to end service," the post finishes. We don't have hard data across all platforms, but on Steam, Ever Crisis peaked at 4,756 concurrent players, and now averages around 500, according to SteamCharts.

Unless the mobile playerbase was remarkably different, that's low by any standards, never mind for something tied to one of the most beloved games of all time. Red Crystals, the in-game currency, are now already off sale, but you're free to use any you already have until October 6. Story events will remain until the whole thing goes dark as well, giving players a few months to experience anything they haven't already.

Besides retelling the compilation of Final Fantasy 7, there is some original material in the narrative. Sephiroth's backstory gets more fleshed out, thanks to a plotline set 15 years before the original JRPG.

This is frustratingly common practice for Square Enix – see the nebulous lore of Kingdom Hearts – and it's irritating no method of preservation has been forthcoming. The publisher commented recently that it will look at ways of keeping releases 'enjoyable' on a case-by-case basis, which may mean the best we get are official uploads of the cutscenes on YouTube.

In an added wrinkle of irony, a redo of Final Fantasy 7: Before Crisis kicked off in the latest update. Before Crisis is another mobile game, from 2004, which never released outside Japan before it was discontinued in 2018. It focused on the Turks, and it looks like it'll become lost media for the second time. Reno, Rude and the boys just can't catch a break!

You have until October to enjoy this slice of Final Fantasy 7. Then, we go back to waiting for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

Less than seven years since launch, Nintendo has announced that its free-to-play Mario Kart game, Mario Kart Tour, is shutting down, with no offline equivalent to keep it playable once its servers go down.

Specifically, Mario Kart Tour will be unplayable from September 29, 2026, at 11pm PT – equivalent to September 30 at 2am ET or 7am BST. "We sincerely thank the many players who have loved and supported the game since service began so long ago," Nintendo says in its shutdown notice.

With the announcement, Nintendo has also ended the sale of Rubies (in-game currency), and stopped new purchases and automatic renewals of the game's Gold Pass subscription. Anyone with an existing subscription can "continue to enjoy Mario Kart Tour Gold Pass benefits, minus continuous-subscription benefits," for free until the game's shutdown, and those without a subscription will be given the same benefits from August 4.

Worst of all for any fans of Tour, though, is Nintendo's confirmation that "an offline version is not scheduled for release." When Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp's end of service was announced back in 2024, Nintendo immediately confirmed that it was developing a way to save your game data and let you keep playing, with the one-time-purchase release Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete coming along to save the day for longtime fans.

It seems that with Mario Kart Tour, fans will just have to cling onto the game's tracks that made it into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and World. There are quite a few – 8 Deluxe added the likes of Tokyo Blur, Paris Promenade, and Sky-High Sundae, for example, with the latter returning in World. Here's hoping that more tracks could get preserved in Mario Kart World as DLC over time. The Switch 2 game only last week was updated with two new Knockout Tour routes, though these didn't add any traditional new tracks – just new ways to experience the old ones.

Minecraft's newest update finally brings more ways to rest your blocky behind, as Cushions and Straw Beds headline the new preview.

On the Minecraft website Mojang details what Minecraft: Bedrock Edition players can expect from update preview 26.40.30, which launches today. While it's not going to introduce any game-changing biomes or new mobs to the game, it does introduce a massive new feature in the form of Straw Beds.

Straw Beds are a new type of bed which allow you to sleep through the night while retaining your previous spawn point, which will be perfect for waiting out the night while you're on an expedition. However, there's a catch, as these beds can only be used one time before being destroyed, and of course you won't be able to use these in the Nether or The End. If you use three Hay Bales you'll get Four Straw Beds to use, so it's not the worst trade for something that's a one-time use, plus you can find them naturally in Abandoned Camps.

The update's focus seems to be to help spruce up the Abandoned Camps that were introduced a few weeks ago in update 26.40.27. The new area will now spawn in the Pale Garden and Flower Forest biomes and boast procedural trees, and an issue which saw loot tables list incorrect potion names has also been fixed.

The other new change is the introduction of the Cushion, which you can craft 16 different colored versions of. These don't exactly have much practical use for your hardcore survival mode run, but they're a new item you can sit on and make your home look that much cuter. These currently aren't found in Abandoned Camps, but Mojang lists this as a "known issue," implying these will find a home there after a while.

Frankly, I'm shocked that it's taken almost 17 years (or 15 years after its official 1.0 launch in 2011) for Minecraft to add a way to sleep through the night without resetting your spawn, now that it's actually in the game, it feels like something that should've been a given on day one, so it's good to finally have the option.

Smaller Minecraft updates like Tiny Takeover and Chaos Cubed "feel more sustainable" for Mojang, says lead: "There's always another one right around the corner."

It's time for Nubia's annual refresh of its flagship, and this year's is... a little underwhelming. That's not to say the RedMagic 11S Pro is in any way a bad device, its base Pro model still tops our list of the best gaming phones on the market after all. The problem is there's very little actually different about this S device, apart from the price tag.

Sure, you're going to get a small bump in performance thanks to that Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 'Leading Version' (the same SM8850-1-AD we saw in the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra), but for $100 more than the RedMagic 11 Pro launched last year, some mathematical gymnastics aren't quite sticking the landing.

The RedMagic 11S Pro looks, weighs, feels, and (for all intents and purposes) plays the same as the original version. This is the same boxy, industrial aesthetic, the same dimensions, the same liquid cooling window. We've got the same 6.85-inch 144Hz OLED display, the same 50MP camera setup to the rear, and the same 7,500mAh battery under the hood. The 11 Pro's top features; wireless charging, IPX8 water resistance, easy monitor and peripheral connection, and 520Hz touch triggers all still remain in place, without any new flashy toys to join them. In fact, it swaps SK Hynix's LPDDR5T RAM of the original, replacing it with LPDDR5X Ultra.

This is still the best dedicated phone for gaming on the market, but the competition it faces from within its own factory proves too strong in 2026.

What I loved about the RedMagic 11S Pro

Much of what I came to love about the RedMagic 11S Pro can actually be said for the previous model as well. Such is the similarity between these devices, you'll find little in this section that isn't also true of the cheaper device. Still, if you're looking for the slightly boosted processor, you'll be glad to hear that blistering performance, sturdy durability, high-end panel, and unique extra capabilities are all still present.

High-end performance

It's no secret that Nubia produces some of the most powerful gaming phones on the market, that much is evident from in-game performance. These things just don't stutter, running more demanding titles like Genshin Impact and PUBG Mobile in 144Hz refresh rates (where compatible) without breaking a sweat. Every time I come back to the RedMagic 11S Pro I'm treated to incredibly smooth gameplay, excellent motion handling, and immediately responsive controls.

I say all that because Nubia came under fire earlier in the year for boosting its gaming phones' power rates to allegedly unsafe levels when running UL Benchmarks' 3D Mark software. The benchmark brand posited that the RedMagic 11 Pro was caught running in a 'Diablo' power preset when it recognized its software performing tests, a power setting that wasn't automatically toggled when the brand used an off-market version of its program.

The brand stated that, due to the inability to turn this high performance mode off, "3DMark cannot produce results for these models that reflect normal, real-world gaming behavior."

When I took the issue direct to RedMagic earlier this year, the brand provided the following statement:

"REDMAGIC devices support multiple performance modes that can significantly impact output depending on how the device is configured. Our devices are designed to dynamically allocate resources under high-load scenarios, whether in benchmarking environments or real-world use cases such as gaming. These performance capabilities are not limited to specific testing tools; they are part of the overall user experience and can be accessed depending on user settings."

3DMark results are generally used in our reviews to cross-compare devices in a like-for-like performance scenario. While that comparison may not be entirely level here, the RedMagic 11S Pro's performance in-game, when it matters most, speaks for itself.

While I'm hesitant, therefore, to use 3DMark scores to compare the 11S Pro against other competitors' models (thankfully, the gaming phone market is remarkably small these days), it can still serve us when looking between the new release and the original 11 Pro. After all, the scores were still achieved - just not under scenarios that would make them comparable with their competitors'.

With that said, let's take a look at the numbers.

What's clear is the RedMagic 11S Pro extends the 11 Pro's scores by 3.5% (Wild Life Extreme) and 3.8% (Solar Bay). When we're already talking about performance that can take on pretty much anything you throw at it without tanking battery life, that 3-4% performance upgrade isn't going to be worth $100. It's impressive that Nubia managed to take a high-performing gaming phone and inject even more juice into it, but whether or not it's necessary for the vast (vast) majority of gamers is perhaps a more potent question these days.

That's performance that will comfortably take you into emulation territory, extending beyond anything Google Play Store needs from you and locking into more demanding retro experiences. If that's your primary use-case, gathering all the juice you can is going to be a top priority.

The 11S Pro runs my PS2 collection via PPSS22 just fine, it'll only be newer systems that need the extra turbo.

Sturdy design

As you'll no doubt have noticed by now, the RedMagic 11S Pro design is identical to that of the 11 Pro. Some of Nubia's more impressive feats in this engineering, however, deserve another shout with the new release. This is an IPX8-rated gaming phone, able to survive in water for up to 30 minutes at up to 1.5m - that's incredibly rare in this space, especially with all these vents.

The actual chassis can take its knocks as well. A heavy industrial aesthetic is matched with an aviation-grade aluminum mid-frame and the 11-Series has also been upgraded with a Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display sheet.

Aside from all those fancy durability features, though, the 11S Pro just feels dense in the hands. It's no lightweight, matching the main release's 230g form factor, and could prove troublesome in smaller hands or pockets. It is rock solid, though, impossible to feel anything other than premium in the hands.

Excellent display

Again, it's the same as the last release, but the 1,216 x 2,688 OLED display is one of the 11S Pro's best features. In fact, these panels are often some of my favorite parts of any RedMagic device - phone or tablet. It's seriously bright, aggressively punchy, and accommodates high-speed motion (whether it's in-game or on TV) without a single fragmentation.

It keeps its colors, saturation, and detailing in bright sunlight without draining battery life (at least, not to an extent that would be noticeable in a day's use).

In short, whether I'm browsing the web, playing a game, or watching some YouTube, pictures appear bright, bold, colorful, and sharp.

Easy to connect to monitors and peripherals

The RedMagic 11 Pro introduced new streaming and connection features that opened it up to new playstyles for mobile titles, outside of traditional small-screen touch controls. Gravity X is a relatively recent addition to the GameSpace software that allows for easy mapping of a mouse and keyboard (or an additional controller) to onscreen controls in any given game. But it also works both ways.

That's because the 11 Pro and RedMagic 11S Pro can also run on an external monitor with a USB-C dongle and HDMI or DisplayPort connection (or via the RedMagic Studio, if you want a slower wireless casting solution). In this scenario, keyboard and mouse are still open to you, but the phone itself can be configured as a separate controller for maximum versatility.

The whole system just works (something I didn't expect to be the case), with an easy setup, reliable connection, and snappy controls. It takes your gaming phone and turns it into a portable console filled with all your day to day titles, ready and waiting for big-screen play.

Hefty battery life

That 7,500mAh battery certainly pulls its weight. Easily lasting me three days when used in a more casual setting (your regular messages, emails, UberEats, YouTube, and a few thumb-twiddlers every now an then), it's one of the more sophisticated systems straight out the box. Of course, heavier gaming sessions will cut that time down, but I never found myself nervously checking power during sessions.

Charging is also on the RedMagic 11S Pro's side. Wireless juicing is difficult to find on a dedicated gaming device, but the newer release keeps the surprising feature from the original. Meanwhile, an 80W wired connection takes around 50 minutes to get you back up to 100%.

What to consider about the RedMagic 11S Pro

These aren't flagship cameras

It's no surprise that a gaming phone doesn't have the best camera system in the world. The RedMagic 11S Pro doesn't improve on the previous model's setup, this is still the same 50MP Main / 50MP Ultrawide / 16MP selfie array.

Again, the detail, tones, and post-processing aren't going to be as skillful as you'll find on a mainstream flagship. There's a lot of vibrancy enhancement in final shots, details appear smudgy when zooming, and greens in particular have a slightly unnatural hue to them. Shots are still clean and sharp in high lighting with the main camera, though, even if ultra-wide and low-light shots suffer in noise and dynamic coloring.

I'll say it again

Perhaps the biggest consideration for those shopping for a new gaming phone is still going to be the similarity between the RedMagic 11 Pro and the RedMagic 11S Pro. That wouldn't normally be a massive point of contention, but this time the price is a pretty significant factor.

After all, many 'S' models are simply new versions of the same phone with a slightly refreshed chipset. That's all fine and dandy as long as the price reflects such a small change. It looks like ongoing component shortages have hit the RedMagic 11S Pro here, though. The only difference I can see between the two devices is that 3-4% uplift in high-demand performance thanks to the 'Leading Version' Snapdragon chipset.

Should you buy the RedMagic 11S Pro?

The RedMagic 11S Pro is, technically, on paper, a better gaming phone than the RedMagic 11 Pro before it. Only because it does everything the original does, in the same form factor, with (pretty much) the same software, with a slight edge in its performance. If the price was right, that would still be enough for me to nudge it into the top spot among our tested devices.

Unfortunately with a $100 price difference between the two (I say it again) pretty much identical devices, the 11S Pro can't quite hold its own on the market. If you're looking to run a particularly modern ROM collection and you want all the juice you can get, it might make sense. In all other scenarios, I'd recommend sticking with the main flagship.

How I tested the RedMagic 11S Pro

I used the RedMagic 11S Pro as my daily device for two weeks, sandwiched in between a month of testing across games, streaming, and web browsing. I primarily tested across MTG Arena, PUBG Mobile, and Genshin Impact, while also loading my PS2 ROM collection (and playing SSX Tricky, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, and Jak 3). I'm no stranger to Stardew Valley and all of the cozy farming sims it's inspired since its 2016 release – but Moonlight Peaks might just be my favorite in concept yet.

In case you've not heard of it yet, Moonlight Peaks is a wholesome farming and life sim that takes everything I love about games like Stardew Valley and gives it a Monster High-esque twist. It ticks all of the genre boxes – bug-catching, cooking, farming, fishing, questing, and, of course, romance – but also adds a bit of morbid magic. There are vampires (whom you play as yourself), mermaids, werewolves, witches… what more could a girl want?

The town itself follows a unique nighttime schedule, too. You don't wake up in the early morning to farm through the day in Moonlight Peaks. Instead, you rise out of your coffin at the turn of the night and take care of your daily tasks before sunrise… because, well, you are a vampire.

Visually, it's appealing, to say the least – but it also adds an extra "cozy" layer to the game, in my opinion, with all of the purple-y blue visuals.

Moonlight Peaks boasts an adorable aesthetic overall, honestly. I'm sold thanks to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons-esque designs and cute itty-bitty beasts (is that a three-eyed cat?) – it's a nice cartoon-y change of pace from the pixel-y style other recent genre gems like Fields of Mistria have opted for.

The whole mystical, magical side of the game from indie developer Little Chicken is what really has me hooked, though. From potion-making to spell-casting, there's no shortage of witchy, whimsical vibes to be found in Moonlight Peaks. The devs even tease mystical crops – whatever that might mean. It's spooktacular, but not in a legitimately frightening way that would break the cozier immersion we farming sim stans crave. The game is, as Little Chicken so aptly puts it, "a sweet and spooky journey."

Although Atlus didn't bring female protagonist Kotone Shiomi back from Persona 3 Portable in Persona 3 Reload, she is making a comeback now – albeit not in a mainline game.

She'll be returning to Persona, but she's not joining her male counterpart Makoto Yuki in Reload – instead, she's part of a new Persona 3 Portable crossover event in Persona 5 gacha spin-off The Phantom X.

It's a strictly mobile and PC game, but it is free to play, so fans of Kotone will finally be able to play as her should they please. Atlus confirms as much in a teaser for the event, showing Kotone in action.

The description of the video details that more information is coming soon, which will likely include the event's release date – but it doesn't provide any other word on what players can expect to see in the crossover aside from Kotone herself.

Regardless, it's a pretty big reveal for folks who've missed one of the Persona series' only female protagonists… and trust me, there are plenty of them to go around.

Heck, Persona 3 Reload fans have been redoing every cutscene in the JRPG to add Kotone in – the dedication is unparalleled, y'all. There's even a mod out there that attempts to bring her into the 2024 remake as seamlessly as possible.

In other words, there's no shortage of Kotone truthers to be found in the wild, and I've got a good feeling this crossover event might spur a rise in Persona 5: The Phantom X players thanks to that.

As for why Atlus didn't choose to include Kotone in Persona 3 Reload a couple of years ago, it all boils down to difficulty and expenses. General producer Kazuhisa Wada previously stated (in machine-translated comments) that even though adding the female character was considered during Reload's development, "the hurdles were too high" ultimately. It's certainly sad, but at least we can play as her in the Persona 5 spin-off.

Here's hoping we learn more about the crossover event from Atlus soon – and perhaps see what else the developers have in store for Persona 5: The Phantom X.

Energy: Psychic

This deck build is effectively broken into three stages of strategy. First, you open with Meloetta or Xerneas, drawing cards and making sure you get the Plaza out for those zero-cost retreats. Secondly, you deploy Gardevoir, who can do respectable damage while also fuelling Pokemon on the bench with massive amounts of energy. Finally, you bring in Mega Diancie ex, who can basically annihilate whatever your opponent has going if you've put down enough energy.

The downsides are that this little bit of setup is vulnerable to disruption, though it's not as bad as it sounds. Rapid card draws from Meloetta and Copycat mean you can get Gardevoir up and running quickly, and Diantha is there to mitigate any early damage opponents get off on you. Plus, the Plaza means that you have basically free control over your own board, and it will never cost you energy again. Finally, Diancie being empowered by energy across your whole board is incredibly good, whereas most scaling attacks before now have been based on energy on that specific Pokemon.

After claiming Steam's fees cost Valve some of the biggest games around, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney doubled down, insisting that "lower fees and more openness might increase Steam profit." Sweeney pointed to companies "like Epic, Riot, and MiHoYo" as notable Steam skippers, and was swiftly reminded that Genshin Impact maker MiHoYo, now more commonly known by its HoYoverse or Cognosphere arms, has a growing presence on Steam.

A recent Twitter post from Sweeney wades into discussion of his comments regarding Steam. He responded to a user who sarcastically said "it is Steam's fault that Epic won't put their game on there apparently."

In full, Sweeney replied, "Here’s what’s happening economically: Steam charges such high fees that developers with strong brands and big enough audiences, like Epic, Riot, and MiHoYo find it more profitable to go it alone. Ironically, lower fees and more openness might increase Steam profit."

This quickly earned Sweeney a Twitter community note which clarifies that MiHoYo has had games on Steam since the 2021 relaunch of Honkai Impact 3rd, and, just weeks ago, released its action RPG Zenless Zone Zero on Steam to great success and reviews.

Additionally, new files spotted in the HoYoverse launcher suggest a Steam version of Genshin Impact may be on the way. However, this could also be a consequence of shared code that's not indicative of future changes.

Zenless Zone Zero came to Steam alongside the release of its big 3.0 update, a major season-like milestone. Genshin Impact is six weeks away from a similar milestone, update 7.0, which would be a tidy anchor for a Steam release. Speculation whirls that HoYoverse will push to reach more players with the final known chapter of Genshin's current regional storyline, which will begin with the release of the Snezhnaya area in update 7.0, perhaps by entreating the Steam audience.

There are a few other factors in the mix here. Zenless Zone Zero is the smallest of the modern HoYoverse games, trailing Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail in virtually all known metrics. A relevant counterpoint here is the game's presence on PC and PlayStation, with Sony showering partner awards on ZZZ amid chart-topping results, making mobile-only comparisons less useful. Zenless' seemingly much smaller audience may have made it a more appealing test for a Steam version. Importantly, Zenless also allowed account linking, letting existing players move to the Steam ecosystem and bring their account and potential purchases with them.

Sweeney doesn't specify it, but Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail are available on the Epic Games Store, which takes a smaller cut of sales than Steam. HoYoverse made a big show of its Epic partnership back in 2021, and it's unclear what terms Epic offered the company.

The latest Epic Games Store annual report confirms that fellow gacha RPG Wuthering Waves, Honkai: Star Rail, and Genshin Impact are, in that order, all among the store's top five "Mythic" PC games. Zenless Zone Zero, meanwhile, is in Epic's "Legendary" game tier alongside Grand Theft Auto 5, Infinity Nikki (another gacha game), Dead by Daylight, and EA Sports FC 26 (a gacha game in disguise).

By Sweeney's own logic of fees versus reach, revenue split alone may not explain HoYoverse's decision to skip Steam until recently. The Epic Games Store only attracts a small portion of the PC audience, and only 16 to 18% of users brought in by free games actually buy games on the store afterward, so with the Epic partnership, HoYo surely would've done some math on what it stood to gain when you put additional players on the scale with migrating players and third-party fees.

I have found Love and Deepspace developer Infold Games guilty of fur-degree murder. The werewolf tech executive who was meant to become the dating RPG's sixth love interest on July 9 is instead face down, tail up in a puddle of blood after fan controversy led to his cancellation – and a moratorium on any future love interests coming to the game where only five sets of six-packs are clearly not enough.

Infold says in a June 30 letter to players and accompanied by the macabre hashtag #LADSValkoCanceled, "We have decided to cancel both the launch and any further development of the new love interest. We also commit that no additional love interests will be introduced in future content plans."

I've been destroyed by this. I was seriously considering buying a new phone just to have more storage for Valko, who, according to a promotional trailer revealed only a few days ago, experiences "INSTINCTIVE ATTRACTION" to my buttercream-sweet main character and is "GENETICALLY LOCKED FORCED TO OBEY" my expensive whims like a good doggy with a Rolex. I was really looking forward to riding side-saddle on this unconventional tech executive's Vespa Primavera, but some Love and Deepspace fans thought he was a symbol of patriarchal violence and an allusion to a real-life murder.

Why don't we pause there… People sometimes tell me they feel like they're having a night terror when I talk to them about Love and Deepspace, on account of it being a period tracker where you can plant Calla lilies and have PG-13 pool sex before marching off into a violent battle against alien mecha. But don't run from this.

I'll explain. Infold won't – it vaguely cited "conversations and feedback across all platforms" for its decision to stab and skin Valko, and it sort of alluded to fan controversy earlier this week in another apology on June 27, in which it said, "The way information about Valko was presented did not give sufficient consideration to your expectations and concerns." But, from my perspective, all that really happened was a few tumbleweed conspiracy theories kept gaining ground, and it turned into an avalanche.

One of these theories involves a tagline Valko received in Chinese promotional material, which, according to a fan's translation on Reddit, joked about cooking and "Rule No. 1: Never bathe in the pot." Warning: the next sentence contains details of a real murder. In their post, the fan explains that Chinese players worry this line references a real domestic violence case people call the "Iron Pot Wife Murder," in which a woman's abusive husband shoved her face in boiling soup, torturing and drowning her.

The fan says, "Infold's blatant disrespect for its female player base cannot be ignored." And I want to take a moment to acknowledge the disgusting nature of the Iron Pot Wife Murder, whose victim I wish peace upon, and the nauseating fact that, according to the UN in 2024, 137 women and girls on average were killed daily by their own family members. This statistic and other evidence of the way women are abused and discarded – some of which I am personally familiar with – sickens me. At the same time, I think it's important we all remember this started as a discussion about a fictional werewolf CEO. He has a hoodie that sort of leaves space for two fuzzy little doggy ears.

Another theory some fans had was that Valko looks too much like Infold CEO Yao Runhao, and that his name in Chinese, Ao Yin 敖尹, sounds like the CEO's name, too. I don't want to spend too much time on this theory, because one of these guys looks like a normal 38-year-old man with glasses and the other looks like an anime statue of Apollo with a slutty smirk and perfect nose for sniffing girl pheromones on account of the fact that he's a werewolf tech genius. I'll let you figure out which one's which.

Ultimately, I think the controversy surrounding Valko is baseless. I understand why women may feel the need to be extra vigilant when it comes to video game content, since it's historically so hostile to us, and upskirt-oriented. But I don't think my mathematical genius puppy husband should be blamed for his father's and forefathers' sins. He isn't like them. He's completely hairless, even though it's thematically confusing. Nonetheless, since he's a werewolf, both he and my period cycle are ruled by the full moon. Doesn't that still mean something?

Energy: Water

The Sleep meta remains strong and gets stronger now that Milotic has entered the fray. This is probably the most straightforward version of the deck, using Milotic and Igglybuff to put opponents to sleep and then having Darkrai do the usual chip damage. We've also seen variants that downplay the sleep for more versatility, bringing in Magikarp and Mega Gyarados ex for greater power. As players start to learn to prepare for Sleep effects as a common occurrence, it may be that ends up being the stronger alternative, but we'll have to see how things shake out.

Otherwise, the deck strategy is straightforward enough. Igglybuff and Feebas get out early, with Wallace allowing you to evolve the latter as soon as possible. Then it's all about riffling your deck to put Darkrai on the bench and maximizing damage. There's no great "killshot" attacks here (nothing that will do more than 80 damage), but with Milotic's passive energy generation, you can get out early and bring down opponents before they have a chance to set up a strategy.

The next Terraria update is going to be a big one. Yo-yos are getting substantial attention, alongside a hearty rebalance to make sure every class feels good play. And to top it all off, there's a huge hotfix on the way - historically large, in fact.

Developer Re-Logic literally calls it the "largest hotfix type update in Terraria's history," in a brief overview of what's coming. "We are very ready to get what we hope will be the last (or darn close to it) hotfix update for Bigger and Boulder into your hands and then to get rolling on what comes next," the post reads.

There aren't any specific details given, but there's a lot of anticipation for this, since Bigger and Boulder arrived in January, and it certainly seems implied that the devs are attempting to tackle all the residual bugbears in one big sweep.

One fan in the official forum jokes that "at some point we'll need a hotfix for the hotfix if it keeps going," and why not? Time to start stacking hotfixes, it's only fitting for the survival game.

Ted "Loki" Murphy, the head of business strategy on Terraria, mentions that this will accompany more balance changes. "We have spent a lot of time this go-round looking into entire classes of weapons - making sure things feel fun, relevant, and worthwhile," he writes.

One key aspect of this will be yo-yos. Murphy points towards a video by YouTuber Chippy, who goes deep on the fan-favorite, but distinctly flawed, weapon. Essentially, while yo-yos feel great to use, servicing as mid-range offense, upgrading them is much less entertaining and unsatisfying.

Re-Logic is on the case, as it sounds like this is something that's been on the slate for a considerable amount of time now before moving into active development. "We've seen this feedback before and have decided to go ahead and finally take action on it," Murphy adds. "We're looking into making some yo-yos more interesting/unique."

Beyond these teases, Murphy says crossplay is still on the way, and the hope is to have it ready for when this patch is live, or close to it. "We are also doing all that we can on crossplay to have that ready to go as quickly as possible once 1.4.5.7 is out to all of you," he adds. "Trying to tighten down these timelines as much as we can!"

Lots coming, as Re-Logic enters another era with the game and eschews any notion of a "final update." Long may it continue - with cooler yo-yos and all.

Epic Games boss calls Steam AI disclosures "really irresponsible of Valve" as they make it "much, much, much harder for a game developer to have a chance of success"

Stardew Valley creator Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone is still hard at work on his next game, Haunted Chocolatier, even if it's taking a while – but he's not quite ready to share more sneak peeks of his exciting project just yet.

He'd rather perfect what he's working on first. The mastermind indie developer says so in a new update on the official Haunted Chocolatier website, amusingly dubbed "Still here, still grinding."

He begins by confirming what he's confirmed quite a few times in the past: "Yep. I'm still working on the game." He says it "feels kinda dumb posting this same thing over and over, but that's the reality." So it is, indeed.

ConcernedApe is well aware that Haunted Chocolatier is "taking a long time" – but he wants to be "very thoughtful about every aspect of the game." He feels the need to ensure that every feature is "perfect," or as close to perfect as features can be. "They need to be seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic," in his own words.

Plus, "it's a big game. So there are many things for me to fuss over." Understandable… heck, Stardew Valley itself is massive.

The dev has said before that the "world of Haunted Chocolatier" will somehow be even "larger" than that of Stardew Valley and that "everything is cranked up" in the new sim. So, why isn't he sharing any more sneak peeks of it, when there's so much?

"I don't like to share too many screenshots or even talk about the systems in too much detail while the game is in development," ConcernedApe admits.

He likens it to baking: "Partly, it feels like I'm serving a half-baked bread. I would rather serve a fully baked bread. Also, I know that many parts of the game will likely evolve and change before release, so if I reveal them early, I risk disappointing players if the final product does not match their expectation. Fortunately, I'm in a position where I don't need to market the game, so I can take my preferred approach."

I'd certainly say so – Stardew Valley continues to stand the test of time as one of the most successful indie games… heck, games, of all time. ConcernedApe does not, in fact, need any marketing, something he acknowledges himself.

While I'd love to see more of Haunted Chocolatier myself, of course, I understand where he's coming from. He's got a lot on his plate between the new sim and Stardew Valley's own 1.7 update, and he wants to make sure his work is complete enough to show folks.

The legendary dev closes with a grateful message to us fans, writing, "As always, I really appreciate your patience" – and to that I'd respond that we really appreciate his work and transparency. Here's to more Haunted Chocolatier… whenever it may come.

ConcernedApe spends 5 days a week on Haunted Chocolatier and 2 on Stardew Valley, says the new game is "a lot harder" to make.

Stardew Valley mastermind Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has been chipping away at his new game, Haunted Chocolatier, since 2020 – and even though he's aware it's taking a while, it's all with good reason.

The legendary indie developer shares as much in a new update on the official Haunted Chocolatier website, aptly dubbed: "Still here, still grinding." He explains that yes, he is still working on his upcoming sim – and yes, he's said that many times.

"I know it's taking a long time. A big part of that is that I am being very thoughtful about every aspect of the game," he admits – and, yeah, that makes sense. Plenty of us are fellow perfectionists.

As ConcernedApe writes, "The things in the game which the player will be interacting with or using very often need to be 'perfect.' They need to be seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic." He looks to the game's chocolate recipe book, as he adds: "I torture myself over every last detail."

I get it. The standards that Stardew Valley set – or should I say, expectations – likely don't help here… neither does the size of Haunted Chocolatier. "It's a big game," after all. "So there are many things for me to fuss over."

That checks out – especially with what he's said in the past, that the "world of Haunted Chocolatier" will somehow be even "larger" than that of Stardew Valley and that "everything is cranked up" in the new sim.

All in all, it's a lot to work with, "but this is what it will take to make a game I'm satisfied with," as per ConcernedApe's own words. That's not to mention Stardew Valley's own 1.7 update, which I'm sure will be massive.

As for why the dev hasn't shared more sneak peeks at his game-in-progress, he simply doesn't want to. "I don't like to share too many screenshots," says ConcernedApe, "or even talk about the systems in too much detail, while the game is in development." I'm certainly fine with that.

I'd rather he feel comfortable when he does post screencaps or teasers, rather than "risk disappointing players," as he puts it himself.

Not that I think he'd ever disappoint us – heck, I'd be happy with pretty much anything after the gem that Stardew Valley was (and continues to be). I'm certain that Haunted Chocolatier will step up to the plate and impress just as much… whenever that may be.

ConcernedApe spends 5 days a week on Haunted Chocolatier and 2 on Stardew Valley, says the new game is "a lot harder" to make.

Although it's been a turbulent year for developers and publishers amid all of the closures and layoffs, the video game industry as a whole is apparently thriving globally – so much so, in fact, that it's raking in hundreds of billions of dollars.

A whopping $200 billion or so, to be precise. The news comes as reports from analytics firm Newzoo (thanks, GamesBeat) confirm the global games market has earned $201.6 billion in revenue – up a good 9.1% year-on-year.

Most notably, this is the first time that the industry has netted over $200 billion worldwide, toppling all the estimations and expectations experts had for the year. Mobile gaming, unsurprisingly, makes up a bulk of this figure.

It has earned around $113.3 billion, up 10.7% from before, while console revenue sits at just $44.7 billion – up only 2.8% this year. As for PC gaming, it has seen the most significant boost of 12%, with $43.6 billion in revenue.

Spending on both base games and extra microtransactions has grown, too, alongside gaming subscriptions. That makes sense, seeing as more and more titles are opting to rely on such "additional" payments.

What makes less sense, however, if we're just looking at these numbers, are all of the recent closures and layoffs. Companies like Microsoft immediately spring to mind, with 15,000 employees laid off and reports of closures at Xbox circulating on the web.

There was South of Midnight and We Happy Few studio Compulsion Games, and redundancies at ZeniMax – not to mention all of the other alleged firings and shutdowns across the industry.

Sure, one has to take into account operating costs and whatnot – but it's still difficult to digest these figures from Newzoo. On top of it all, estimations and predictions point to an even more lucrative market in the coming years.

Could the number rise even higher in the billions? I suppose only time will tell… I just hope things smooth out a bit on the other side and the high figures reflect better where devs themselves are concerned.

Searching for some good news to look forward to for a change? Here are some of the biggest new games coming this year and beyond to keep on your mind.

After Epic Games spoke heavily about generative AI ahead of yesterday's State of Unreal presentation, Vampire Survivors dev Poncle says it's "reviewing" the Fortnite crossover that was announced during the event.

Earlier this week, Epic Games released a video titled "A Look At Epic’s Art Concepting Process," where it openly admitted that it is using generative AI during the development of Fortnite skins and assets. The video itself features the artists designing concepts for Fortnite before using a Photoshop tool to generate details and speed up the process. Unsurprisingly the video also features a lot of moments where the AI hallucinates and the artist needs to go back and fix the error, which – in the wake of Epic laying off over 1,000 employees earlier this year, and the general cost of everything due to global ram shortages from it being wasted on AI slop farms – feels especially tone-deaf.

A day later, during the State of Unreal presentation, new crossovers coming to Fortnite were announced, specifically Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Control Resonant, Phantom Blade Zero, and Vampire Survivors. However, mere hours later, the Poncle account took to a Reddit post about the collaboration to say the following: "Following today's news about gen AI usage by Epic to create all sorts of game assets, including Fortnite characters, we're currently 'reviewing' our collaboration with Fortnite. We'll let you know if anything moves forward."

From the wording, I don't know that the collab is canceled entirely. Rather, it seems Poncle is looking into whether AI was used to create Vampire Survivors content in the game. Earlier this year, the developers of Phantom Blade Zero spoke out against AI usage, too, and while there hasn't been a similar comment from S-Game, I can see Epic's open use of generative AI tools being a hurdle for some collaborations in the future.

Why so many game developers don't want to use generative AI

The many Minecraft biomes are a massive part of what makes the game so enjoyable and diverse today. From the basic origins of just a handful of different biomes, there are now over 20 primary regions, and many more once you consider variations like deep oceans and windswept hills.

There are also loads more biomes being added to the game with each new Minecraft drop, with the Sulfur Caves and Dappled Forest being among the most recent announcements. Here, I've got everything you need to know about those and the existing major Minecraft biomes as of update 26.2.

New Minecraft biomes

Here, I'll tell you about the latest biomes added to the game, that you can find in the current version. So, if you don't yet know and would rather be surprised, skip this part! However, if you want to know more about the latest Minecraft biomes or how to find them, this section's for you.

Sulfur Caves

The Sulfur Cave is the newest biome, added with the 26.2 update on June 16, 2026, and is perfect if you, like me, get a little tired of the same grey surroundings while mining. We may have Lush Caves and The Deep Dark to take our breath away, but there's still plenty of room for something new, and that's exactly what this is.

While it might look like it would fit better in the Nether, the Sulfur biome is so unique to the overworld that it's going to look fantastic when you spot that first red or yellow block during a mining session. These are Cinnabar and Sulfur blocks, and each have an entire family of building blocks relating to them, which will make for some great new Minecraft house ideas.

While you're taking in the sights, though, be careful where you step. Sulfur pools are bodies of water found within these caves, and the presence of Potent Sulfur beneath the water causes pockets of gas. Get too close to this gas, and you'll find yourself feeling a little... funny. You'll also be able to find a new friend or two in these Caves, with new Minecraft mob the Sulfur Cube.

Sulfur Caves can be found at any depth, and Sulfur pools even have a chance to be spotted above ground, indicating a Sulfur Cave beneath. Your best bet at finding one is simply to cave and mine, looking out for the biome's signature yellow or red blocks.

Upcoming Minecraft biomes

This section tells you everything we know so far about any upcoming Minecraft biomes that are set to be added in future drops, so they may not be able to be experienced right now, or you might be able to try them out in Minecraft snapshots or Preview.

The Dappled Forest

Announced during Minecraft Live May 2026, the Dappled Forest is the next new biome to be added to the sandbox game - and this one is really exciting.

Not only does this cute biome add autumnal-colored leaves for the first time without mods, following in the footsteps of the pink-hued Cherry Grove and white-tinged Pale Forest, but it also adds the first new structure we've had in some time: the Abandoned Camp!

The colorful leaves come as part of new Poplar trees, which will add a new family of beige-grey wood blocks for building with. There's also a new red bush variant, which maintains its color no matter where you place it.

The Abandoned Camp, meanwhile, is a small new structure that features a tent, some storage containers, and other handy loot, including a new place to spend the night. However, it's not that safe so take care! Perhaps the most exciting part of the Abandoned Camp, though, is a new building block that players like me have been craving for some time: the wool stair!! White wool stairs will be found as part of the tent structures in camps, but this also means you will be able to turn any wool color into a stair block, which is great news for builders.

As I've mentioned above, there are plenty of variants. For example, Mountains isn't actually a biome in itself any more, since it became Windswept Hills, but now can be used to refer to seven different biomes, including Jagged Peaks and Snowy Slopes. Water biomes, meanwhile, are split into warm, cold, hot, and other variants.

Each Minecraft biome has its own flora, fauna, blocks, and items that be found there, and some are rarer than others, so it's useful to know what you're looking for and how to spot it - or you can just explore and see what you find!

Energy: Dark

Arguably as much a Darkrai deck as a Giratina deck build, this one runs exclusively Dark energy because of Giratina's ability to empower itself. Meanwhile, Greninja's on the bench to target opponents with chip damage every turn, so while this is a deck with a weaker early game, cards like Darkrai and Iron Jugulis serve to whittle down the opponent and discourage them from really exploiting that early opportunity.

Given enough time, this deck can then come out swinging. Either Giratina is doing 130 damage per turn, or Darkrai is doing 80-100 damage depending on whether you keep putting energy on it. It's not quite as powerful as it used to be now that there's a greater selection of cards with equal (or more) power output, but it's still very strong and worth considering in the meta.

Meowscarada ex in Pokemon TCG Pocket is focused on a grass deck that's all about sly control play and cheap energy costs, as well as some punishment against players who bring in certain common strategies. This is what makes this deck so disruptive, as Meowscarada ex is constantly forcing the opponent to switch around and stay agile or else potentially lose Pokemon on the bench. And at a one energy cost, it's a strong attack - but the problem is that its not always building to something. Tanky or versatile decks can be difficult for Meowscarada to deal with, though ultimately this is a build that can wreck any deck that's too inflexible or lacking in health.

From that point on the strategy varies depending on what's available to you. This is a pretty flexible deck build, though one that lacks a decisive "heavy hitter" to win you the game. Generally you want to use regular Absol or Zoroa as your opening active card, while keeping Bombirdier and Nihilego on the bench where they're most effective. Poison chip damage from the Barb should whittle down opponents enough to finish them off with Absol ex or Zoroark, and the former's ability to get them to discard Supporter cards should ensure that they have less options than normal.

Mega Absol ex and Hydreigon in Pokemon TCG Pocket have been two of the most powerful Dark type cards in the meta since they were added, both for different reasons. Absol does moderate damage, but has a lot of health and causes opponents to discard Supporter cards with every attack, while Hydreigon is a self-damaging energy generator who can do 130 damage per turn, and it's not even an ex Pokemon! This pure dark deck is highly aggressive, using cheap energy attacks and poison to go in hard from the outset, as well as using the Fantastical Parade's Lucky Ice Pop item to help alleviate the damage done to Hydreigon by itself, or just to keep Mega Absol from being KO'd and losing you the game. This is a deck where you can't let up on the offence for a moment, and it works because it can tear through opponent's strategies before they have a chance to set up combos or counters to what you're doing.

Put simply, the strategy is to get Absol or Deino out there early, softening up the opponent with whatever cards you have in the active zone before building up to Hydreigon and unleashing its full power. You don't even have to be particularly protective over it, as Hydreigon's absurd damage output somehow doesn't make it a Pokemon ex, so even if it falls you don't give your opponents many points.
