Zack Snyder has been opening up about the circumstances around his exit from DC once again.

The director was the original helmer of Justice League before he left the production and it was completed by Joss Whedon, featuring several reshoots and cuts to the original version.

It took Snyder a long time and a lot of campaigning to release his version, nicknamed the Snyder Cut, but it eventually hit HBO Max in 2021. While Snyder has revealed it was a difficult time and he's still never seen Whedon's version, he told Variety in a new interview that he did get some closure from an unnamed executive.

"There was this catharsis of, I met with this executive at Warner Bros. who's long gone since – I won't say who it was – and he said to me, 'You know, Zack, I've got to tell you one thing: You were right about everything.' And I was like, 'That's kind of you.' And he goes, 'We were fighting you, and in the end you were right.'"

According to reports at the time, some of the details that Warner Bros. had wanted changed in Snyder's version were a more humorous tone as well as significantly reduced runtime. Variety reported that the film was the fourth most streamed of 2021 and critical reception was significantly more positive than the theatrical version.

The director was speaking as part of the press rounds for his latest movie The Last Photograph, which marks a change of pace for the director. The passion project has just debuted at TIFF, but unfortunately the first reviews have not been glowing.

David Corenswet might have proven himself worthy as the Man of Steel in Superman, but even he was reluctant to have another scrap with Lex Luthor, who will now be suited and booted in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet shared a few details about the upcoming chapter of the DCU that will see a reluctant alliance formed between Superman and Hoult’s Lex Luthor. As revealed in a behind-the-scenes image from Gunn, the head of LuthorCorp will wear an all-new warsuit not too dissimilar from the one worn by the Raptors in the 2025 film. Except green and considerably flashier.

Talking about where Supes is personally, Corenswet teased, "The character is a little more mature. They're going to go a little bit deeper. Not to mention all the crazy stuff, Nick Hoult in the warsuit," he explained. When asked what his initial reaction was to seeing his screen partner stomp on set in his new suit, Corenswet was brutally honest. "He's going to be hard to fight. I’m going to rip my knuckles up punching you."

Of course, Lex won't be the only foe Superman will be squaring off against, with Man of Tomorrow marking the long-anticipated arrival of Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. Wielding a highly advanced intellect and an obsession with bottling up things to study, this new alien threat will need Metropolis' greatest hero and its richest tyrant to take him on.

Thankfully, there will also be some added support from Aaron Pierre's John Stewart, fresh off of Lanterns, Xolo Maridueña bringing it back as Blue Beetle, and maybe, just maybe, the debut of a brand new Wonder Woman, who might look remarkably like Andor star Adria Arjona.

He hasn't tussled with the Caped Crusader since the DC Universe changed hands, but Zack Snyder believes there’s no better time for him to return to the Batcave and give his adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. Following the premiere of his new film The Last Photograph (which critics eviscerated at TIFF) the director, who has a long and fraught history with the DCU, explained why Frank Miller's graphic novel is the only story he'd want to go back to.

"The reason why it's The Dark Knight Returns, if anyone would ever let me do it outside of the DC Universe since it's a novel that just happens to have superheroes in it, is if I could do Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, those two books next to each other, to me, represent the complete cycle of the superhero comic book medium," Snyder told Variety.

"You can do no more than those two books. Watchmen came at the beginning of the superhero movie phase, so it would be super fitting to have The Dark Knight Returns come now, at what I would say is possibly – I don't want to call it the twilight, but we're down the road of the superhero movie genre, and I think audiences would understand the why of it."

Snyder's love of the 1986 tale was apparent in Batman v Superman, which not only took story elements from Miller's book but also key frames for its visuals. Regardless of where you might stand on the director's work, he's always had a knack for perfectly replicating some key sequences from the comic book stories he's adapted, including 300 and Watchmen. In his eyes, though, he feels the time of heroes and villains might be at an end, and a final bout with Batman is what he's hungry for.

"Let's not forget: The Dark Knight Returns was written for a comic book audience that was very exhausted by comic books in the same way that Watchmen was, so having that movie written now for people who are exhausted by comic book movies would be a good time," he added to Variety.

Whether audiences are really exhausted with comic book movies is up for debate, particularly given that the biggest film of the year is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That's even before Avengers: Doomsday makes its arrival on December 18, which is guaranteed to make a few pennies, at least.

As for Batman, the only version we’ll see soon is the one that brings Robert Pattinson back in The Batman 2, hitting theaters on February 18, 2028. Check out all the other upcoming superhero movies you need to know about.

Depending on what part of the planet you’re living on, it appears that Superman is set to go up, up, and away from HBO Max, and understandably, some DC fans aren’t happy about it. According to the Superman Homepage, James Gunn’s 2025 DCU Chapter One movie has “Leaving Soon” stamped across it on the streaming service in places like Australia and Spain, with an expected departure date of September 18 or 19, depending on where you are.

In some cases, the apparent exit of the first all-new DCU movie comes almost a year after it arrived on HBO Max. As it stands, there’s no telling whether David Corenswet’s debut as the Man of Steel might pop up on another streamer local to certain countries. Even so, fans have understandably expressed their concern about the impending change, wondering if and when Superman returns (no, not that one).

In some cases, the film is set to appear on Netflix on Saturday, and fans have chimed in. @QueenZiitta said on X, "Superman leaving Max right as the new DCU is gaining momentum feels like an interesting move. Netflix could introduce Corenswet’s Superman to an even bigger audience." Other fans weren’t so happy about the news, with @luvghoulia saying, "This pisses me off. I don't want another subscription just to watch my fav movie when all the other DC stuff is on HBO."

It does seem a little ill-timed, given that Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), who has been plastered all over Superman on HBO Max, is set to make an appearance next week on the hit show, Lanterns. This might leave those uninitiated having to wander around to look for him, if at all, when the feature film makes its departure. For HBO Max users around the world, we’d advise squeezing in a showing of Superman while you still can before the next chapter in the Superman story hits screens.

It's nothing new for heroes and villains to switch sides. Venom started out as a real pain. Sinestro was the greatest Green Lantern of them all, until he wasn't. Perhaps one of the most forgotten heel turns in comic book history, however, involves billionaire bad guy Maxwell Lord, who has now been played by two different stars on the big screen – Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984 and Sean Gunn in Superman.

In a recent online exchange with a fan, James Gunn – the co-head of DC Studios and director of Man of Tomorrow – was asked why bowl-cut-haired ring-slinger Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) was working for Lord as part of the Justice Gang, given his evil reputation. It was here that Gunn set the record straight on Threads about the character, and assured that the version we'd already met might be different to the kind of character Lord had become.

"Who said he was evil? The DCU is not a Xerox of DC Comics. It's an alternate universe. But as a hint, I'm a huge fan of the deeply flawed but hardly malevolent Max as originally created by [Keith] DeMatteis, [J.M.] Giffen, and [Kevin] Maguire, not the less nuanced evil dude he was retconned into," explained Gunn. "The original Max as presented in JLI was one of my favorite characters."

For those who might have done their hero and villain homework, Lord started out as an ally to the Justice League and was a key part of the Justice League International’s formation. Over time, he eventually became an enemy of the original League and ended up getting his neck snapped by Wonder Woman in a pivotal part of Infinite Crisis after killing Ted Kord, aka Blue Beetle.

In the final act of Superman, Gardner enlisted Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) into the Lord-funded hero team, the Justice Gang, while also giving themselves a name change. Factoring this in, there's no telling how close to the comics the Justice League's journey might become and, by extension, how much involvement Lord will end up having as this universe expands. While Gunn might certainly be backing his version of Lord, we'd still suggest that Xolo Maridueña, who is reprising his role as Blue Beetle, keep an eye out, just in case.

Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow has now wrapped filming and DC fans are starting to wonder when we might get a first look at the new movie. Well, if James Gunn has anything to do with it, we might not see several key characters until we're in the theater.

Posting on Threads, Gunn was asked if we can expect to see Superman's new suit any time soon. "If I could just drop it in theaters without showing anything I would," he replied, before sharing a similar sentiment too about Brainiac, who is set to be the new big villain in the new DC movie. Played by Babylon Berlin star Lars Eidinger, he'll be the target who brings Clark Kent and Lex Luthor on the same team.

"James, are we getting a first look of Brainiac? Just tell us so we can set our expectations about this," another fan asked to which Gunn replied: "Again, I'd rather show people nothing and have people see everything in theaters. But unfortunately we can't entirely do it that way."

It's not yet clear when we'll get our first look at Man of Tomorrow outside of set pictures, but the movie is set for release on July 9, 2027. Therefore, it seems likely we'll be waiting until the new year before we get a trailer.

Elsewhere, Gunn warned audiences not to expect a lot of new characters in Man of Tomorrow, even though the cast list is looking pretty stacked. As well as Nicholas Hoult and David Corenswet returning as Lex and Clark, Milly Alcock will return as Supergirl, Aaron Pierre is back as John Stewart, and Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane.

Andor star Adria Arjona is also joining the cast, but it's not yet clear who she's playing. Initial rumors suggested she might be Maxima but it has been heavily speculated since that she's actually going to be Wonder Woman. Her intense training has only been fuelling these rumors too.

As Lanterns etches closer to its green-tinted finishing line, fans have their eye on the next chapter of the DCU, which involves its most powerful hero and his most nefarious enemy. Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) are teaming up in James Gunn’s next directorial endeavor, Man of Tomorrow, and understandably, theories are flying around faster than speeding bullets over not just what it’ll involve, but also who will be present for the comic book action. As always, Gunn took to social media to lay out some solid truths, while still making sure not to give anything away.

When asked if he was going to reveal secret characters for the new film after Lanterns finished its season, Gunn gave the indication that there weren’t any. "What secret characters?" The director asked on Threads. "It’s [a] movie about Lex and Clark. People shouldn't expect substantial amounts of other characters."

Making sure to clarify what his point was, Gunn added, "When I say substantial amounts, I mean both the amount of new characters and especially the time onscreen of characters who weren't core characters from Superman (well, other than Brainiac). Things have been blown way out of proportion, and most stuff is just dead wrong."

And so Gunn's continuing tradition of throwing fans off the trail continues. Whether he keeps them at bay, however, is a different matter. Anticipation is already high for this super-sized entry, since it will be the first Superman movie to feature Brainiac as the big bad, brought to life here by Lars Eidinger.

Additionally, all eyes are on Adria Arjona, whose role is being kept tightly under wraps, even though all bets are on her picking up the golden tiara and lasso of Truth as Wonder Woman. We'll finally be able to see if that's the gig she's got, and how she'll handle sharing the screen with the Man of Steel and his reluctant partner from crime when Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

When Robert Pattinson’s first outing as the Dark Knight made its way into theaters, fans and critics were calling it the best Batman movie since, well, The Dark Knight. Where does that leave Matt Reeves’ eagerly anticipated The Batman 2, then?

With production underway and an air of mystery still covering the movie like a smog on a cold Gotham evening, one of the newest talents joining Reeves’ world, Sebastian Stan, has made a bold comparison about how things are going, and it involves one of the greatest films ever made.

During an interview with Variety, the matter of bats and men predictably came up, and Stan was careful in discussing it. After a lengthy time playing this game while working on Marvel projects, the star didn’t let too much slip about his venture into DC’s cinematic corner of the universe.

"I go to set sometimes and I look around and I’m like, 'I think we’re making fucking Godfather Part II.'" Such a title isn’t something to throw around lightly, which Stan is fully aware of. "I really don’t want to raise it up, but I do feel like it's going to be a payoff."

For now, we still don't know which character Stan is stepping into the shoes of for the new film. The expectation is he's going to be Gotham’s doomed District Attorney, Harvey Dent, who after a horrific accident becomes Batman’s legendary foe, Two-Face. Other theories suggest that he might be taking on the role of the sadomasochistic Victor Zsasz, who made a brief early appearance in Nolan’s Batman Begins.

The only details we’ve got to go on so far are what's being snapped up on set as filming for the upcoming movie continues in London, with brief sightings of owls and Anarky (trust us on the spelling). Unfortunately, they’re going to be the only scraps we can snag as we wait for The Batman: Part II to arrive to swoop in.

No matter how divided audiences might be about his latest film, The Last Photograph, the debate will pale in comparison to the golden era of Snyder fandom and his handling of the DC Extended Universe.

Beginning with Man of Steel and ending with his own cut of Justice League, his time with Batman and Superman, whether loved or loathed, was exactly what he was aiming for, and a far cry from the bright and snappier world we got with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Looking back, though, Snyder revealed in an interview that perhaps that’s the kind of route he should’ve taken with his time in the DCEU, after all.

"[Marvel is] like an amusement park ride, right? The ups, the drops, the kind of cruising part, and then another drop. At the end, you’re like, 'Wow, that was crazy, that was awesome,'" Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter. "I had no interest in that. And you know, maybe that was a mistake. But I don’t think that way. I can’t do that. I'd rather just kind of talk about the mythology of them. And maybe that's not as fun," the director added.

There’s no doubt the biggest issue with the fan-labeled Snyderverse was its dark, overly intense tone, which for some bogged the films down a little. Now, though, there's been a tonal shift in movies like Superman and shows like Lanterns as part of the James Gunn-shaped DCU Chapter One. And while it's proven popular with some, it still hasn’t been without its hiccups (sorry, Supergirl).

For now, we can just be grateful that Snyder did his best in one of the world’s most beloved comic book universes, and certainly left his mark on the genre, whether you like it or not.

Details about who is playing what in The Batman 2 might be scarce, but one thing that’s been circulating regularly is behind-the-scenes snaps of the highly anticipated sequel from director Matt Reeves. Currently filming in London, Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne has been seen wading through a crowd of angry Gothamites with a lot to say and even bigger statements to make on their wide variety of protest signs. It’s with these nifty bits of craftwork from Gotham’s locals, though, that the reference to a major Batman villain might just have been confirmed.

TheBatmanSagaNews has posted footage of the crowd holding signs that read "Court of Oligarchs" and "Court of Fouls," which any Batfan will recognize as a clear reference to the secret organization The Court of Owls. Debuting in 2012, the Court of Owls is a mysterious society that has existed in the city’s shadows for years, long before Bruce became the Dark Knight.

Composed of Gotham’s wealthy elites, they even enlisted a team of deadly assassins that were known as the Talons to enforce their secret rule, and at one point pushed Batman almost to the breaking point when he discovered them.

The Court's appearance in the movie would mark their first live-action big-screen appearance, after already popping up in the Batman prequel series, Gotham. Well, that is if Reeves isn’t leading us down a blind alley and duping us, just like he’s done before. Let’s not forget that the director cleverly shot alternate scenes that the public caught in The Batman, including Zoe Kravitz’s Selina Kyle walking down some steps with Falcone (Jon Turturro). When the movie finally got its public release, the scene in question was nowhere to be found in the finished cut, with Falcone instead accompanied by a completely different woman.

Additionally, the new leaked photos show someone in the crowd wearing a mask that looks like Anarky, another of Batman’s foes who hasn’t appeared in any Batman movie. As the name suggests, Anarky is a villain bent on overthrowing the government, using lethal means if necessary. Pairing this rogue with the aforementioned court does seem like a sensible step, suggesting that the new chapter of The Batman could expand further on Gotham’s classist issues that were present in the first film way back in 2022.

Then again, Reeves could be just pulling the cowl over our eyes, and we can’t blame him. Having spent such a long time in development, and even with its new cast additions that include the likes of Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Tyree Henry, and Charles Dance, being kept under wraps, these kind of cinematic misdirects could all be part of the game.

Adria Arjona is almost certainly playing Wonder Woman in Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, but the Andor star continues to be grilled about the likely identity of her mystery character while on the promo tour for A24 horror-thriller Onslaught.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Arjona dropped a couple more tidbits about her entry into the DCU Chapter One, without outright blowing the worst-kept-secret in superhero casting since Sadie Sink was forced to keep schtum about playing Jean Grey for months on end.

First, Arjona knew which character she was auditioning for from the beginning, which isn't always the case with secrecy-shrouded superhero projects (for example, VisionQuest's Tommy Shepherd star previously auditioned for an MCU role, but still doesn't know which one). Arjona responded to a direct question about whether she knew the character she was auditioning for with a simple, "Yeah."

The grilling continued, with some light-teasing about the idea she could be playing Maxima. Many have taken the suggestion that Arjona – a major up-and-coming star – could be playing a character as obscure as Maxima, and going to significant lengths in the gym to bulk up, as a clear smoke-screen for the truth: she's the DCU's Diana Prince. So what did Arjona make of her mystery character's costume?

"I love my costume," Arjona said, barely keeping things together at this stage. "Really like my costume. Both great costumes. Both characters [Wonder Woman and Maxima], if you are a fan of the comics. They have great costumes."

To be fair to Arjona, it's an impossible position to be put in, and as she freely admits: "I'm sworn to secrecy and I don't like secrets. I hate secrets. I'm so bad at them!" In all likelihood, Arjona is set to appear fleetingly in Man of Tomorrow, so it might be better to announce what we all know, now the cat is well and truly out of the bag.

That said, everyone involved swore blind that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Peter Parkers weren't in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and that worked out pretty well for all involved, as did keeping Sadie Sink's Jean Grey under wraps, given Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks set to finish its theatrical run as the highest-grossing movie ever at the US box office. Maybe there's something to be said for secrets after all.

Man of Tomorrow recently wrapped filming ahead of its planned Summer 2027 release. The movie sees David Corenswet's Kal-El and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor team up to face an even greater threat in Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). The movie is set to be something of a crossover event for the DCU, with Milly Alcock's Supergirl, Aaron Pierre's Green Lantern John Stewart, and Adria Arjona's, ahem, unconfirmed character all set to appear.

It sounds like the almost six-year wait will be well worth it, as Bruce Wayne star Robert Pattinson says that The Batman 2 is very different from the first movie.

"It’s just amazing. It’s quite a radical change to the script," said Pattinson at the Venice Film Festival (via MYmovies), noting that the sequel goes into "another tonally different direction… even when I'm just looking at the playback on certain things, it looks different to the first one."

Pattinson added, "It's difficult to reinvent Batman as this new thing... I think Matt is the only person who anybody would allow to do it because it’s like a really radical retelling of Batman and I think people are gonna be excited by it. According to the star, both DC Studios and Warner Bros are totally "behind" Reeves' vision.

Reeves and co are keeping a tight lid on the upcoming sequel, which is currently filming in Glasgow, Scotland. However, although leaked set images and videos have revealed that not much has changed in terms of the design of the Batmobile and Bat's suit, a flurry of new faces have joined in on the fun. This includes Sebastian Stan, who fans think is either playing Harvey Dent or serial killer Victor Zsasz, and Scarlett Johansson, who may or may not be Poison Ivy.

Pattinson's comments have convinced fans that the "radical change" could be a hint at Batman joining the DCU. "Yup, he’s the DCU Batman, thank God," said one fan on Twitter, and another added, "So basically they’re trying to make Batman fit into the DCU?" As it stands, Reeves' Batman movies are not part of James Gunn's DCU: Chapter One. However, Gunn's Batman movie The Brave and the Bold has yet to find its star.

But other fans think that Pattinson is simply talking about how Reeves might be taking risks with the sequel. "First one was fire," added another fan. "If different means differently cool, I‘m down." It is no secret that The Batman: Part II hasn't had the easiest road to release. The movie has been delayed multiple times until it finally landed on an early 2028 release. With such a long wait between the two films, fans are certainly expecting something big.

Adria Arjona is determined to still keep Man of Tomorrow's worst kept secret, unveiling her intense training for the Superman sequel. While there has been no official announcement about who she's playing, it's heavily speculated that the Andor actor is actually joining the DCU as Wonder Woman.

The rumor mill will show no signs of abating either after she's shared her new training regimen for the film. In a video for Women's Health, Arjona revealed she is "training now for a specific project," referencing her part in Man of Tomorrow. It's a pretty insane schedule that involves her doing cardio for 45 minutes, followed by two hours of weight training, before doing six rounds of boxing.

"It's a job," she explains. "I'm really enjoying it. I'm enjoying the transformation but it's hard work. I've never felt stronger but it's hard. Well I think the excitement of playing the woman I'm playing gives me everything I need to wake up. It's exhausting but it's all for the better good."

Arjona joined Man of Tomorrow earlier this year with reports she was either starring as Maxima or Wonder Woman. James Gunn has been on the defensive, denying that she's starring as Maxima, but there has been no official reveal about who she will be playing.

It seems pretty obvious that she's been training for a big role in the film, and given we've had no Wonder Woman announced yet, our money is on that part. We think DC is trying to follow Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day plan and not reveal its major character until it hits theaters.

In the meantime, former Wonder Woman Gal Gadot has shared her well wishes to whoever is taking on the part next.

The Flash went through several iterations before it made it to the screen, including one version written by Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. However, it seems like their version would have featured a pretty different take on Batman.

Goldstein was recently asked if anything from their script ended up in the final cut. "An element of him and his slightly younger self embarking on the journey together", he told The Playlist. "Everything else was kind of different. We had a version where Bruce Wayne never became Batman."

He went on to explain: "So he was just this sort of billionaire party boy who's aimless and doesn't know what to do with his life. And we love the idea of sort of thrusting him into a hero position. That is not in the film. They made it Michael Keaton's Batman. So not a lot survived."

In the final movie, Keaton's Caped Crusader appeared when The Flash accidentally travelled to an alternate universe when trying to go back in time to save his mother. This version of the character, from the Tim Burton Batman movies, is actually retired and reluctant to get back involved with superhero shenanigans.

Although, I feel like Goldstein's version would have made a lot more sense as in the alternate reality that Barry Allen returns to, superheroes like Superman and Aquaman don't exist (Supergirl, you'll recall, is locked away). The film explains Batman's continued existence by the fact that he's not an enhanced being like the others, but it is still a bit confusing.

While not currently part of the DCU, a new version of Batman is on its way. James Gunn and Peter Safran are still planning a Batman movie called The Brave and the Bold, but it's not yet clear who will play the iconic character. In the DC Elseworlds, Matt Reeves is bringing back Robert Pattinson in The Batman 2, which is currently filming.

Robert Pattinson says filming fight choreography for The Batman 2 has him "feeling his age," though I'd argue that 40 is still pretty young.

"I’m definitely feeling my age when fighting a lot," Pattinson told GQ. "I'm literally like, 'Goddamn, this is significantly harder than it used to be.' But it’s really fun. And I think the movie’s going to be pretty great. It’s got a really, really fun cast, but it’s a marathon."

The Batman hit theaters back in 2022, with The Batman 2 slated for an October 2025 release date. Well, that came and went, but luckily filming is currently underway in Glasgow, Scotland. There have also been numerous set leaks that look pretty dang cool, the most recent being an all-out car chase with the Batmobile vs. Gotham PD.

We still don't know what the movie is about, though we do know that it picks up a few weeks after The Penguin season 1 (and Colin Farrell will indeed be returning as Oz Cobblepot). Sebastian Stan has been rumored to play Harvey Dent aka Two-Face, but his shaved head on set seems to indicate he may be playing villain Victor Zsasz instead... Either way, Pattinson can't start feeling old yet as we need him for at least three more Batman movies. Though the DCU will have to cast its own Batman soon, as Pattinson's Bruce Wayne exists as part of the Elseworlds universe...

Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña didn't think he'd return to DC, until James Gunn called him out of the blue.

Maridueña first played his character Jaime Reyes in 2023's Blue Beetle, but, since that was part of the old DCEU, there was some doubt whether he'd return – even though Gunn said Blue Beetle was the first DCU character.

"There's never a guarantee with anything, bro," Maridueña told Variety. "I mean, you know this, stuff flips on a dime, and I know that it's not always like a merit-based system. So, there's so much that's out of my control, but I am just the most humbled of James and the greater DC team for folding us in, Indiana Jones style."

He also explained how he learned he was set to return. "I was in Japan with my friends; nobody knew anything," he shared. "And I just see, like, the Bat-phone, my phone rings [and it's] James Gunn. All my friends look at me, and I had to leave the room. I came back, and I was like, 'Off the record, don't tell anyone, but we're coming back,' and I'm so excited for people to see where Blue Beetle ends up."

Maridueña will return in Man of Tomorrow, a quasi-sequel to Superman that will see David Corenswet's Clark Kent forced to team up with his nemesis Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), against the much bigger threat of Braniac (Lars Eidinger).

The rest of the cast includes Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Lanterns star Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and Adria Arjona as Maxima (though fans think she's Wonder Woman).

Gal Gadot says she was never told that a new Wonder Woman movie was no longer happening under DC Studios' new leadership. When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over, it was initially unclear whether Wonder Woman would stay under their new DCU plans, with conflicting reports at the time about whether it was cancelled or still happening.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor was asked if Gunn and Safran sat down with her at all to break the news when it was finally shelved. "No, they told me the opposite," she replied. "They were like, 'We're going to develop it with you, the third la la la.' But I saw the way everybody else [was] handled."

Interviewer Josh Horowitz then added that he thought Henry Cavill's Superman exit was "unfortunate" at that time. The actor was brought back in the Black Adam post-credits scene, before it was announced he was being recast in the new DCU. "The Henry situation was not being handled elegantly, to say the least. Same with Patty [Jenkins, Wonder Woman's director] was not handled elegantly," Gadot continued.

"I feel like, you know, we're all adults and it's all good, and it's not even about them. They are there, and they are there to do what they believe in, and it's all good. I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to wear these boots and have the character be so celebrated and be the vessel at that point of time, and I can only wish for whoever it's going to be to really come pure to this journey."

It has not been officially announced who the new Wonder Woman in the DCU is, but there have been several casting rumors. Adria Arjona has joined the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, and it's widely reported that she will play Diana, even though Gunn has denied this.

Gadot recently said she hopes whoever plays her "enjoys this amazing ride with this amazing character."

New set leak videos from The Batman 2 have arrived... and the hype for the upcoming sequel just tripled in size (for me, anyway).

The videos, which can be viewed below, show three different angles of the Gotham City PD chasing the Batmobile via swarm of squad cars. They manage to box him in, but Batman escapes by accelerating and ramming into one of the cars before speeding off. The coolest angle is definitely the one from above, which really gives a heightened sense of realism and, to quote the fan who reposted the footage, we should "add to the 'holy shit [Batman] is real' folder."

The Batman 2 was due out in October 2025, but we're happy to wait as more and more exciting news is released. We still don't exactly know who Sebastian Stan is playing, as he was initially rumored to be Harvey Dent aka Two Face... but his shaved head on set has made some fans think he's playing villain Victor Zsasz instead.

As Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow wraps filming, DCU fans are more certain than ever that Adria Arjona is playing Wonder Woman. Although the Andor star has yet to confirm, it is highly possible, as it sounds as though the DCEU's Diana star Gal Gadot won't be returning to the role.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Gadot said she hasn't "heard anything" or had "any specific conversations" with DC Studios or heads James Gunn and Peter Safran about reprising her Wonder Woman or even taking on a new character, just as DCEU's Aquaman star Jason Momoa returned as Lobo in Supergirl.

Gadot seemed to seal her fate by leaving a heartwarming message to the next Wonder Woman actor: "This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much, so whoever it's going to be to portray her, I wish for her that she enjoys this amazing ride with this amazing character. And I'm just grateful that I was granted the opportunity to wear her boots and celebrate this incredible character and everything she stands for."

Gadot first appeared as the DC hero in Zack Snyder's 2016 movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, followed by her own movie and Justice League in 2017. The star made her last run as the Amazonian in sequel Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020, followed by a brief appearance in The Flash, which released after Gunn took over DC Studios. At that point, many fans believed the studio would keep on actors such as Superman star Henry Cavill or Momoa's Aquaman, but Gunn jettisoned much of what came before, and later introduced David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel.

Gunn has yet to announce the new Wonder Woman, but fans are sure it is Arjona, who is set to appear in Man of Tomorrow in a still unconfirmed role (though some reports have suggested she's playing Maxima). Earlier this week, the star confirmed that although she still cannot confirm her character, she has been "training two to three hours a day on a crazy diet," and has "muscles" like never before. The upcoming sequel welcomes back Corenswet's Superman and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor as they team up to face Braniac.

Adria Arjona can't reveal who she's playing in Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, and our only hint is that she bulked up for the role.

"I have muscles that I've never had in my life. I'm training two to three hours a day on a crazy diet," Arjona told ScreenRant. "Drinking coffee is the only thing that keeps me up. And I’m really excited!"

There have been rumors that Arjona, perhaps best known for starring as Bix Caleen in the Star Wars Disney Plus series Andor, is playing Wonder Woman in the DCU for quite some time now. However, several outlets reported back in April that she was set to play Maxima. Director and DCU co-captain James Gunn, however, said the reports were false. As it stands, we have no idea who Arjona is playing... but I'm putting my money on Wonder Woman.

In case you're unfamiliar, Maxima is an alien queen from the planet Almerac who comes to Earth to find a mate... and quickly decides that Superman is the only worthy option. He's not fazed, given his undying love for Lois Lane and all, and chaos ensues. Given that Gunn has pulled a lot of unsuspecting heroes out of the DC comics for the newly rebooted DCU, namely the Creature Commandos, so it wouldn't be out of the norm for him to throw Maxima into the ring.

While we wait for Man of Tomorrow to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, you can stay up to date on all the upcoming DC movies and shows that are in the works.

Despite a rumor that DCU Batman movie The Brave and the Bold is on hold, James Gunn has clarified that the film is still in the pipeline.

The film is set to be directed by The Flash and It: Welcome to Derry helmer Andy Muschietti, and a claim that the director had said the film was on hold until after the Warner Bros. and Paramount merger was settled recently hit the internet.

"It doesn't sound like something Andy would have said but the project is in no way on hold," Gunn wrote on Threads.

News on The Brave and the Bold has been quiet since it was announced along with the DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate in 2023.

"There's really no new updates," Gunn told us last July, ahead of the release of Superman. "I mean, we're working on a script. We have a screenwriter who's hammering away at it. I'm very involved, and so, you know, we'll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don't."

But, another Batman will make it to the screen soon. The Batman 2, which sees Robert Pattinson return as his version of the Caped Crusader, will arrive on February 18, 2028. However, this Batman is in a different universe to the DCU.

"I just think Matt Reeves is brilliant and he wrote, not only tonally, a really kind of dark and at times terrifying piece, and not only psychologically weighty and nuanced, but really feeling," Penguin actor Colin Farrell has said of the upcoming film. "It's a really... There's moments in it. It's full of feeling. I just think he wrote kind of a contemporary genre masterpiece, really. I'm only in two scenes, which is great because it means I can enjoy the rest of the film. Honestly, man, it's so good. I'm so excited about it."

Lanterns is currently airing on HBO in the US and Sky/NOW and HBO Max in the UK, while the next DCU movie is Clayface, which arrives this October 23.

It seems like The Batman 2 director Matt Reeves is big on don't fix what's not broken, as leaked set photos have revealed that the Caped Crusader's Batsuit hasn't really changed for the sequel.

Pictures of Batman star Robert Pattinson's stunt double Rick English on set in Glasgow, Scotland, have appeared on Twitter. The images, which you can see below, give us a closer look at the sequel's Batsuit, featuring the same structured ab area and black bat across the chest. There's nothing new here, but English is wearing a big black coat over the suit, seemingly hiding the cape.

Some DC fans are a little " disappointed" over the lack of change, mostly because of the four-year wait between the two movies. However, others are happy to see the suit we fell in love with in 2022 back in action. "The suit is perfect already. Why needlessly change it?" replied one fan, and another added, "It's not mandatory that it changes with every film, especially since it was excellent to begin with."

Earlier this month, images of the battle-damaged Batmobile appeared online, suggesting that Pattinson's Bat may run into some trouble in the sequel, just as he did in the 2022 original during the memorable Penguin car chase. But, much like the Batsuit, the Batmobile has changed much, too. The vehicle is still sporting the muscle car look with the exposed silver engine at the back.

However, the lack of change actually makes a lot of sense. According to Colin Farrell, the sequel is set to pick up just a few weeks after the end of HBO show The Penguin, which is in turn set one week after The Batman. So, with so little time to upgrade his wares in the aftermath of The Riddler flooding Gotham, we can forgive Bruce Wayne for outfit repeating.

DC Studios is keeping a tight lid on details surrounding The Batman: Part II, which has been pushed back numerous times before landing its early 2028 release. Alongside Pattinson, Andy Serkis will return as Alfred Pennyworth, as well as Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon and Farrell as The Penguin. The sequel adds Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson in mystery roles. But many fans think Stan is playing either Harvey Dent or serial killer Victor Zsasz, and Johansson has been rumoured to be the next Poison Ivy.

James Gunn has confirmed that filming has wrapped on Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow, with a series of behind-the-scenes pictures. These feature Lex Luthor star Nicholas Hoult swimming in a lake as well as the crew in a rocky forest – and fans think this may be a clue about a key location in the sequel.

Posting on Reddit, one fan pointed out: "This environment looks like Salvation. Could be where Brainiac and/or Lex end up. Could also have a funny Peacemaker cameo too."

For those unfamiliar, Salvation is an alien prison that becomes a place to exile supervillains. It was introduced in the 2007 Salvation Run comics, which sees characters like Luthor and the Joker imprisoned there as they create alliances and try to escape their fate.

It also played a big part in another DCU project, Peacemaker season 2. Introduced by Rick Flag Sr., it was masterminded as a way to keep those with extraordinary abilities imprisoned in a way that Arkham and Belle Reve can't. And from the pictures Flag shows in Peacemaker, it does look very similar to the background of this location.

It's also where Peacemaker ends up at the end of the season, after he's kidnapped by Flag and sent through the portal onto the planet. He tells him that he's planning to send the Metahumans there, but first wants to see how it impacts the human body.

Could this be where Lex ends up at the end of the movie, imprisoned on the major planet after teaming up with Superman? It's certainly possible, but I think it might actually be where the sequel starts. Last we saw of the character, he was in prison, which makes me think he may be one of the first characters transferred to Salvation under Flag's new plan.

I like the idea that this could be where he first meets Brainiac too, as the Reddit theory suggests. If they've been acquainted before, it might be why Clark Kent goes to Luthor for his knowledge on the villain in the upcoming movie.

Man of Tomorrow has officially wrapped filming, and James Gunn has posted a villain-on-vacation-esque photo to celebrate.

"That's a wrap on principal photography for #ManofTomorrow," Gunn wrote in an Instagram post featuring a photo of the and another of Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor swimming in a lake. "Truly a joyful experience and I have immense gratitude to my cast and crew." You can check out the photo below.

Man of Tomorrow, written and directed by Gunn, sees David Corenswet's Superman and Lex Luthor team up to take down supervillain Braniac, played by Babylon Berlin star Lars Eidinger. Milly Alcock's Supergirl is also set to make an appearance.

Even more exciting, at least for me, is the fact that Lanterns star Aaron Pierre is set to make an appearance as John Stewart (though the new DC show just premiered and we don't know if John, who is Hal Jordan's trainee, ends up becoming the Green Lantern or not). Pierre previously told GamesRadar+ that his time on Lanterns helped him step onto the set of Man of Tomorrow with confidence, as it gave him a much deeper understanding of the character. Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Guy Gardner is also set to appear.

Lanterns may be on everyone's lips right now, but fans are discovering that a Green Lantern movie starring Jack Black almost happened.

As revisited by YouTube channel Cutshort, talks surrounding Jack Black and Green Lantern began in 2004 on gossip column Lying in the Gutters and an Ain't It Cool forum post.

Described as a "zany comedy" and penned by writer-actor Robert Smigel as an adaptation of 1980s arc Emerald Dawn, a script was leaked online in 2006.

The leaked script was panned then and looks no better in retrospect: a giant Pikachu battle (baffling), Jack Black's Lantern almost destroying the Earth (bizarre), and a 'green' Superman (bewildering) all featured.

"The idea sounds serviceable as a separate superhero comedy, but it's crazy as the first ever Green Lantern live action movie," one person commented beneath Cutshort's YouTube video.

Another added, "Hearing [about] this script really makes me appreciate the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie all the more."

A decade after the fact, Black spoke to Yahoo about why the scrapped project was cancelled. Ultimately, it was the studio's decision not to forge forward with the idea, perhaps understandable at a time when they had the likes of Superman Returns and Batman Begins on the way.

"There was a really funny script, an awesome script that I wanted to do, by the genius Robert Smigel… but they didn't want to pull the trigger," Black said. "They were making zillions of dollars with all their other superhero movies – they didn't want to mess with that formula."

Of course, Green Lantern would go on to be adapted for the big screen – in a notorious, Ryan Reynolds-led flop that is still less-than-fondly remembered today.

Green Lanterns are finally eating good, though, thanks to HBO's Lanterns, starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan.

Oppenheimer actor David Krumholtz has said he's stepping back from acting for a while. Known for playing Isidor Rabi in Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winner as well as appearing as Kara Zor-El's father in this year's Supergirl, Krumholtz will be a recognisable face to many film fans.

However, in a now-deleted post on Threads, the actor revealed his struggles in Hollywood. "I kinda sorta put my acting career on hold the other day," he wrote, per Deadline. "It's been something I've been petrified to do for years. Specifically, the fear was that I’d go broke and not be able to handle being out of the game. But I sent the definitive email.”

He went on to explain his reasoning, saying he was "frustrated, fed up, fried." Krumholtz added: "It became clear to me this year that if I were to continue fighting for parts (what I used to call 'auditioning'), I’d be doing so for roles that exploit my talent and reputation for a drastically diminishing return. Exploitative art isn’t art. And artists deserve a fair pay percentage for work that assists their employers in making profits."

In a subsequent post, he said that he's going to shift his career to "inspire kids in school through motivational speaking."

As well as his roles in Supergirl and Oppenheimer, Krumholtz has appeared in shows like The Studio and the recent Springsteen biopic. He began his film career back in the '90s with Addams Family Values and 10 Things I Hate About You.

After months of speculation, Sebastian Stan has seemingly confirmed who he's playing in The Batman 2, and it's not serial killer Victor Zsaz.

Speaking to French Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, alongside fellow Fjorde star Renate Reinsve, Stan – totally unprompted – announces that he is playing Harvey Dent (and, presumably, Two-Face as well) in Matt Reeves' secretive superhero sequel. He drops the bombshell news moments after claiming he "can't say anything" about the movie. Well, you just said something!

According to LJDD, the interview took place at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and while we've no reason to call LJDD's reporting into question, it seems somewhat strange that Stan would blurt this out given his own claims that he's a seasoned veteran when it comes to Marvel movie spoilers (unlike loose-lipped co-stars Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo), so take the news with a grain of salt pending confirmation.

The speculation of late has been that Stan is playing the villainous Victor Zsasz, a claim seemingly supported by the fact he's been sporting a shaved head recently, much like the tattooed serial killer. Before that, however, he was long thought to be playing Gotham DA and white knight Harvey Dent, who, of course, turns into the supervillain Two-Face after a run-in with the Joker. Aaron Eckhart played the last live-action Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight.

If the news is true, this solves a major The Batman: Part II mystery, though we still don't know who any of the movie's other new cast members are set to play, including Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch. Though Johansson could be playing Poison Ivy, if a year-old cryptic post from The Batman 2's co-writer is any indication. Filming is currently underway in Glasgow, where a battle-damaged Batmobile was just spotted.

It looks like Robert Pattinson's vigilante will run into a bit of trouble in The Batman 2, as a battle-damaged Batmobile has been spotted on set.

The leaked image, which has since been posted on Twitter, shows a transporter carrying the Batmobile. The car looks pretty much the same as the Bat's custom muscle car in 2022's The Batman, bar a few minor tweaks. However, the vehicle has a huge dent on the side, seemingly from being crashed into. But not to worry, as also on the truck is another undamaged car shell. Check out the post below.

Now, we already know that Pattinson's Bat isn't afraid to get into a car wreck or two. In the first movie, the iconic car chase sequence between Batman and the Penguin ended with Oz Cobb's car being flipped. However, we wonder if the same will happen in The Batman: Part II or if the sequel's elusive villain will run the Batmobile off the road.

The Batman: Part II leaks have been coming in thick and fast since the movie started filming in Glasgow, Scotland, earlier this month. One video posted on TikTok shows the Batmobile driving through the streets, giving us a better look at the jet-black car and its exposed rear engine.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman: Part II hasn't had the easiest road to release: it's been delayed multiple times from October 2025 until it finally landed on an early 2028 release. However, not much is known about The Batman: Part II other than its cast.

Alongside Pattinson, Andy Serkis will return as Alfred Pennyworth, as well as Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon and Colin Farrell as The Penguin. As for the villains, Sebastian Stan has joined the cast in a mystery role, but fans believe he is either playing Harvey Dent or serial killer Victor Zsasz. Scarlett Johansson is also set to star, possibly as Poison Ivy. Behind-the-scenes snaps also suggest that criminal organisation the Court of Owls may play a major part in the new film.

Supergirl has come under fire after a new video appeared to show the filmmakers using generative AI during pre-production on the DC Studios movie. In a behind-the-scenes featurette, director Craig Gillespie can be seen looking at a screen with images of Lobo's design on it.

However, instead of being traditional concept art, many commenters have suggested these images seem to be generative AI. These allegations have been shared widely across social media too, with viewers pointing out the distinctive blurry look that computer-generated images have.

Following the backlash, Warner Bros. removed the video from YouTube. It's not currently clear whether the featurette will also be taken off the digital release of the superhero movie too. GamesRadar+ has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment on whether the imagery was AI-generated and why the video was removed.

Supergirl underperformed at the box office when it was released earlier this year, making less that Joker 2 and Morbius. It also landed to some pretty mixed reviews, earning just a 52% Rotten Tomatoes score.

GamesRadar+ gave the movie 3.5 stars, writing in our Supergirl review that it's "Superman's messier younger cousin in every way". Our reviewer added: "Supergirl earns its Guardians of the Galaxy and Mad Max comparisons with a surprisingly dark (and sometimes downright gross) space adventure about revenge and finding your home."

Despite her mixed arrival, Kara Zor-El will be returning in the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is due out next year. Before that, next up in the DCU is Lanterns, which starts airing on HBO Max on Sunday, August 15.

James Gunn has moved fast to quash rumors that The Batman 3 will be filming back to back with The Batman 2.

After a fan asked on Threads whether the DC Studios co-CEO could "confirm or deny" the reports, Gunn plainly responded, "I can deny."

The excitement around back-to-back sequels entering production under Matt Reeves appeared to stem from Batman on Film founder Bill Ramey posting a Batman logo with 'three' written in Roman numerals on Twitter. Some even went on to report the post as more than a rumor.

Ramey later clarified, "My intention behind posting the picture was true: Bangin’ the drum for a THE BATMAN PART III. However, if you’re a fellow Batman fan and a fan of Matt Reeves’ SAGA, I apologize if you felt misled. Honestly, not my intention."

So, we're only getting The Batman 2 – for now. The DC sequel (part of the 'Elseworlds' umbrella, so not part of the DCU) is currently filming.

Robert Pattinson once again returns as the Caped Crusader, flanked by familiar allies in the shape of Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and trusty butler Alfred (Andy Serkis).

Newcomers include Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, and Charles Dance, although speculation has run rife about who exactly each actor will be playing. For Stan alone, the rumor mill has mentioned everything from Harvey Dent to Victor Zsasz.

The DCU, meanwhile, is gearing up to launch Lanterns – a HBO murder mystery starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler – later this month. A Clayface movie follows in October, with Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow hitting cinemas next July.

Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav doesn't seem too concerned with Supergirl's box office failure, as he has full confidence in what DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are cooking up next.

"We have Clayface coming up soon, which looks terrific," Zaslav told TheWrap, when asked directly about the critical and box office failure of Supergirl. "We got Lanterns launching in the next few weeks on HBO, which Casey [Bloys] and Sarah [Aubrey] are super excited about. So DC feels very good, and we have a robust pipeline, and Peter and James are hard at work."

Supergirl had a pretty rough go this year, and only made $125 million at the global box office against its budget of $170 million. The film currently sits at a 54% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, though the audience score is at a much higher 76%. There's also some speculation that the film's screenwriter misinterpreted the ending of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic on which the movie is based, not to mention all the kerfuffle about the deeply strange needle drop during the final epic battle scene. Despite all the chaos, leading lady Milly Alcock will appear again as Kara Zor-El in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is set to hit theaters in 2027 (and I'm stoked to see her return).

Next up for the DCU is Lanterns, a True Detective-style take on the adventures of Lantern Hal Jordan and his trainee John Stewart, and the horror movie Clayface, which tells a Cronenberg-esque origin story about the goopy Batman villain.

It sounds as though DC's next movie will lean more into the horror genre in more ways than we first thought, as director James Watkins says Evil Dead helmer Sam Raimi was a huge influence on the upcoming DCU Chapter One film Clayface.

"There were definitely some Sam Raimi influences," said Watkins to Empire. "The way that Sam Raimi can push horror almost to ridiculousness, and humor. I mean ridiculousness in a good way. But pushing it where we're all walking that line of 'Oh man this is extreme, and we know it's extreme and we're in it together.' The boldness of what he does."

Raimi is best known for his gory and wacky Evil Dead franchise, which pushes the boundaries of horror and heavily impacted the comedy-horror subgenre we know today. However, much like Watkins, Raimi did move from horror to the superhero genre, directing the beloved '00s Spider-Man trilogy.

Batman villain Clayface is the perfect subject for this kind of "extreme" body horror. So far in the trailers, we haven't yet seen Clayface go full on gloop, but it sounds as though it's coming. However, Watkins has previously confirmed that the full transformation won't be shown in any promotional material, so we will have to wait until release day for that. The most recent Clayface trailer does give us a glimpse of the titular character experiencing terrifying bodily changes, though, including his eyelids sticking together.

We already knew that Clayface would be an all-out horror movie. Aside from being directed by the See No Evil and The Woman in Black helmer, it is penned by horror legend Mike Flanagan. The film, which focuses on the Hollywood actor iteration of Clayface known as Matt Hagen, has been described as "violent" and "highly disturbing" by members of the press who were able to view footage early.

However, Watkins went on to say that another "massive inspiration" is Brian De Palma. "When you see the movie, you'll see," said Watkins. De Palma is best known for his crime movies such as Scarface and The Untouchables, but he also helmed the original 1976 Carrie adaptation.

New DCU movie Supergirl has officially finished its worldwide theatrical run, and its total gross is the lowest for any DC movie in decades.

Supergirl has ended its global theatrical run at $125.8 million worldwide, as per Box Office Mojo. That's over $45 million lower than 2022 DC flop Morbius, which earned $167 million, and $83 million less than Joker 2.

In fact, Supergirl marks the lowest box office return for any DC movie since Catwoman in 2004, which earned $82 million. But that was over 20 years ago, so considering inflation, Supergirl fared far worse.

This isn't a huge surprise, as Supergirl has struggled on screen from the very start. The movie opened to $37.1 million in the US and just over $62 million globally. But the Woman of Tomorrow adaptation failed to grow from that point on, seeing massive dips week by week. In the end, Supergirl only managed to scrape in total what last year's Superman made on opening weekend alone last year.

The movie marks a financial loss for DC Studios, as it cost around $170 million to make and perhaps tens of millions more to market. Worse yet, Supergirl is only the second movie in James Gunn's new DCU, following last year's Superman, which made more during its first weekend on screen than Supergirl did in its entire run. Superman went on to gross over $618 million worldwide.

It is not clear why the movie flopped so hard. Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Supergirl follows the titular hero as she puts her partying days behind her to help a new friend seek revenge on the same villain responsible for harming her dog, Krypto. The movie opened to mixed reviews and a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not so bad when compared to Morbius' 15% score.

However, in June, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran told The New York Times that although Supergirl's opening was disappointing, the team remains "confident" in their overall strategy. DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters continues this year both on the small screen with Lanterns this August, and on the big screen with Clayface this October.

The Batman 2 production designer Luke Hull has posted what appears to be a prop photo from the production of the DC sequel – and it may confirm the appearance of villains we've been dying to see on the big screen.

As you can see below, a complicated labyrinth structure has got tongues wagging among The Batman fandom.

The smart money, if this is indeed related to The Batman 2, is about the Court of Owls, the shadowy protectors of Gotham who have pulled strings from the sidelines for centuries.

The first major appearance of the masked villains in Scott Snyder's Batman comics run culminated in Batman having to fight the group in a maze that looks eerily similar to the one presented here.

A coincidence? A tease? Whatever it is, it's proved the catalyst for speculation that the Court of Owls – perhaps the most-requested villains in a crowded field – are making their bow in The Batman 2.

Elsewhere, the layer of mystery surrounding the project's main players shows no signs of dissipating.

The Batman 2, recently delayed until 2028, includes Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan among its newcomers, though there has been no concrete information about who they are playing just yet. Stan's new bald look, however, has led to talk he could be playing shaven-headed serial killer Victor Zsasz.

What is more certain is that The Batman 2 will look amazing – if Matt Reeves' snow-covered screentest is anything to go by.

Gotham City will be rife with plenty of familiar faces when the Dark Knight returns in The Batman Part II, but now we can confirm there will also be some familiar sounds with Robert Pattinson’s second run as the Caped Crusader, too.

In an interview with Screen Rant, composer of The Batman, Michael Giacchino, explained that he felt pretty confident he’d be back to settle the score for director Matt Reeves’ take on Batman just as he did in 2022. "I don’t think there’s a world where Matt Reeves would allow me not to be involved. He and I are such good friends, and I love working with Matt more than anybody; he’s the greatest.” Thankfully, Reeves was quick to respond on X to confirm that their work relationship would indeed continue, reposting the article with “100%” followed by three bat emojis (aww).

Well, sure, it's a nice tweet and all, but is it getting down on one knee and asking with Godzilla present, Matt? Is it?!

This would mark the sixth time Giacchino and Reeves have collaborated on a project, with their first team-up dating back to 2008, on the director’s breakthrough gig, Cloverfield. Giacchino’s contribution to Reeves’ run as Gotham’s legendary protector earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack and had fans walking through the rain all sulky for quite some time after the film’s release.

It’ll be interesting to see (well, hear) what kind of music Giacchino will conjure up for the new characters that might be appearing in The Batman Part II, considering the long-standing rumors of Harvey Dent playing a part in the new film. Other fresh blood getting caught in the crime and cape activity will be Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Tyree Henry and Charles Dance. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell will also be back for round two.

Comic book fans are desperate to see Alan Ritchson answer the bat signal in James Gunn’s DC Universe, but as it stands, the Superman director doesn't sound like he's planning to hand over the keys to the Batcave just yet.

Last year, Gunn assured that he was a fan of the Reacher star and advised, "let's just wait and see what happens," saying no more on the matter. Well now, Ritchson is back to stoke the flames of the DC fan-fuelled fire and assure that conversations have definitely been happening regarding his involvement in the cinematic universe. He's just not clarifying what they involve.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ritchson confessed that "James Gunn and I have spoken a lot." Naturally, when host Josh Horowitz probed the star on what chats were had, he seemed bursting at the seams to spill the superhero-themed beans.

"There's so much to unpack here that you don't even know. You don't know what you're asking for," Ritchson said. "I really respect James. I would like to do something with James. James would like to do something with me."

As promising as this might sound, though, the man mountain behind Reacher, which will soon be returning for its fourth season, clarified that there would be some conditions he'd make sure to meet if something ever did happen.

"I know how to develop a project and anything I do with DC will still meet my standards. It'll have to meet my standards. And I hope that we work on something that feels like we're all making this movie that I would be proud of."

Finally, when asked if there was a character in DC’s roster that he had his eye on, Ritchson gave a resounding, "Yes." While not confirming if it was Batman, he teased, "Look, the future is bright, the horizons are broad, and anything is possible for any of us." Mister Mxyzptlk it is, then.

As James Gunn's DC Universe continues to expand, we're still in the dark about two of the big three that fans want to see appear in it.

David Corenswet's Superman might be holding down the Fortress of Solitude, but we're still none the wiser about whom the Dark Knight of the DCU is, or the Wonder Woman that'll be fighting alongside them both.

For some time, one name that has long been rumored to be in connection with the part of Diana Prince is Andor and Hit-Man star Adria Arjona.

The last time her name came up in DC-related hubbub was in April, when it was reported that she was set to play Maxima in the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. Gunn, however, shot those rumors down, suggesting that wires had certainly been crossed, even though other outlets had already reported this. What better person to ask to clear up all the information, then, than Arjona herself?

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress was asked outright if she was picking up the lasso of truth or not, and her only (and pretty reasonable) reaction was to make like a woman with a superhero identity and walk away from the conversation entirely. "I'm going to go now," she said before jokingly returning and giving as much detail as she could on the upcoming project that she's mysteriously attached to.

"I love James so much. Funny that you ask me that, James gave me my first movie ever. The first movie I ever stepped on was a James Gunn and Peter Safran movie. They are family, and I am so happy to be part of the DC universe."

So, whatever part that might be still has yet to be revealed. The good news is that, since SDCC is happening this week, we might get some big announcements, which could include a little clarification on Arjona's part in the upcoming super-sequel. We'll just have to see if she makes an appearance via invisible jet or not.

A new trailer for the DCU's first all-out horror movie Clayface has arrived, and I've never been more excited to have nightmares about my own skin sticking together.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed above, Hollywood actor Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) makes the mistake of getting with a mobster's girlfriend, which results in a brutal attack that leaves him scarred and unable to work. He decides to undergo an experimental treatment, at the hands of trusted doctor Caitlin Bates (Naomi Ackie), that has some, uh, side effects. One of the side effects in question includes his eyelids beginning to stick together, and he quite literally cuts them apart on an airplane that's undergoing turbulence. David Cronenberg would be proud.

DC co-CEO Peter Safran recently confirmed that we've actually met Matt Hagen before, as the Clayface in the animated series Creature Commandos is indeed the one we're about to meet in live-action. Given how terrifying the DCU decided to animate Clayface (taking inspiration from his haunting, toothy design in Batman: The Animated Series), we're about to see something unimaginably terrifying on our screens come October, and I'm stoked.

James Watkins (Eden Lake) directs from a screenplay penned by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan also star.

Clayface will save some secrets for the theaters it seems. The new Mike Flanagan-written horror movie will be the latest release for DC Studios as it introduces Matt Hagen, a Hollywood actor who descends into a horrifying monster.

The first trailer for the film promised plenty of body horror and scares as we caught a glimpse of what Clayface will look like. However, we won't be getting much more than this it seems before the movie is out in theaters.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, it was confirmed that the James Watkins-directed movie will follow in the footsteps of Longlegs and The Wolf Man by holding back the full monster.

"You don't want to show the shark," Watkins said, referencing Jaws' approach. "I think people give away too much… I believe in the power of mystery and the power of suggestion and the power of people putting two and two together. I think it's more fun."

However, the actor behind the Batman villain Tom Rhys Harries did tease his reaction to how Clayface looks – and it sounds pretty thrilling. "It's been a year since I saw that thing being built out. I can't wait for people to see it," he added to EW. "I'm constantly in awe of the huge creative machinery that goes into making a film like this, and how talented everybody on board is, and how lucky I felt to be a part of that in any way."

DC co-CEO Peter Safran has confirmed that the Clayface we first met in Creature Commandos is the same one we're about to meet in the live-action horror movie.

"Yes, it is the same Clayface," Safran told Entertainment Weekly before going to confirm that "the events of Clayface predate Creature Commandos in the canon," and that the terrifying goopy nightmare we met in animated form is indeed the same one we're about to meet in live-action.

The confirmation comes just a couple of months after DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn hit like on a Threads post from a fan that theorized that live-action Clayface and Creature Commandos are one and the same.

If you're unfamiliar, Creature Commandos, despite being an animated series, is canon to the DCU, and some of those characters will indeed be appearing in a live-action project at some point (if they haven't already, i.e., John Economos and Rick Flagg). Clayface – though the horror nature of the film seems better suited to Robert Pattinson's Batman – is also canon to the main DCU storyline (whereas Pattinson's Batman, along with The Penguin, exist in what's known as the Elseworlds).

And if you thought Clayface's animation style in Creature Commandos looked similar to his design in Batman: The Animated Series, you'll be happy to know that the DCU's Clayface is Matt Hagen... the very same actor-turned-villain who haunted our childhoods in the early 2000s. Tom Rhys Harries plays the titular fleshy mess, with James Watkins (Eden Lake) directing from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan.

It's well-known that DC's upcoming body horror Clayface was inspired by the classic Batman: The Animated Series two-parter Feat of Clay. But in a new interview, Matt Hagen himself, Tom Rhys Harries, has revealed that the Batman Arkham games' depiction of the shapeshifting Batman baddie was a touchstone for the DCU: Chapter One movie.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Harries not only name-checked the 1989 graphic novel 'A Serious House on Serious Earth' by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean as an inspiration for his take on Matt Hagen, but the Welsh actor also identified Rocksteady's 2009 franchise launcher Arkham Asylum as a touchstone for its depiction of a Clayface at “a really effective and psychologically jarring moment.”

Now, if you've played the Arkham games, you're probably wondering if Harries actually meant Arkham City, as Clayface isn't much more than a glorified Easter egg in Arkham Asylum, appearing briefly in a cell where he transforms into Quincy Sharp and Jim Gordon as the solution to one of the Riddler's many riddles. Arkham City, however, gives Basil Karlo a surprise starring role: in a late-game twist (spoiler alert!) Batman discovers that Karlo has been posing as the Joker all along – "the role of a lifetime," as he puts it.

It's curious that Harries has singled out Arkham's Clayface. While the first two games in particular are widely lauded for their Paul Dini-scripted stories, and Clayface undoubtedly plays the role of the Joker well (he had us fooled, anyway), there isn't much depth to the character in the Arkham-verse beyond the unexplored psychology of a man willing to embody a psychotic clown. In fact, he only has three lines of dialogue when he's not imitating the Joker – two of which are "encore" and, er, "let's do this" – so it's not clear what "psychologically jarring" moment Harries is referring to.

What's clear is that Clayface is something drastically different for the DCU and superhero cinema as a whole. The story of actor-turned-transforming-gloop-guy Matt Hagen, the R-rated movie will feature “the true body horror of a Cronenberg-type movie,” according to DC co-CEO Peter Safran. “We’re not just telling a villain story, but a real psychological unraveling.”

After Supergirl failed to fly at the box office, making less money than Morbius during its opening weekend, the DCU is currently on the back foot. No doubt Safran and Jame Gunn are hoping the upcoming one-two-punch of HBO series Lanterns and Clayface will turn the fledgling comic-book universe's fortunes around.

“Not everything’s gonna work," Safran admits in that same interview, referring to Supergirl's commercial failure. "But we don’t judge the success of our 10-year plan based on any individual project along the way." Instead, it's about "expanding the tonal range of the DC universe,” notes Safran.

The first Clayface trailer teased a body horror spectacle from director James Watkins (Speak No Evil) and writer Mike Flanagan (many a Stephen King horror), just don't expect Batman to show up, despite all the Gotham nods in the initial reveal.

Your eyes do not deceive you – one minor costume detail in The Batman 2 is different to the first movie.

Matt Reeves recently shared the news that the film would be delayed again until 2028, along with some footage of the DC film. In it, Robert Pattinson's Batman can be seen suited up.

On Twitter, one fan noticed that Batman's ears look longer, and Reeves himself confirmed they were right: "You are not crazy."

Of course, this change doesn't seem to mean anything on the surface, and it certainly doesn't give us any hints about what the sequel might be covering. But, it is a fun difference that makes the costume look even more striking.

The first look at the film shared by Reeves confirms a snowy Gotham setting for the movie, though it doesn't give away anything else.

Along with Pattinson, the rest of the cast includes Andy Serkis returning as Alfred, Colin Farrell returning as the Penguin, and Jeffrey Wright returning as Jim Gordon, while newcomers include Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, and Charles Dance.

"I just think Matt Reeves is brilliant and he wrote, not only tonally, a really kind of dark and at times terrifying piece, and not only psychologically weighty and nuanced, but really feeling. It's a really... There's moments in it. It's full of feeling," Farrell has said of the sequel. "I just think he wrote kind of a contemporary genre masterpiece, really. I'm only in two scenes, which is great because it means I can enjoy the rest of the film. Honestly, man, it's so good. I'm so excited about it."

The Batman 2 has been delayed again, because we can't have nice things.

As per Deadline, The Batman 2, originally set for October 2027, is now hitting cinemas on February 18, 2028, some six long years after the original.

Unfortunately, this isn't new news for fans of the Caped Crusader. The Batman 2 has been hit by multiple delays over the years: first, a shift from October 3, 2025 to October 2, 2026. A few years later, it was pushed further to October 7, 2027. Now, it's a 2028 window for the Robert Pattinson-starring sequel. And let's hope it stops there.

At least director Matt Reeves has thrown us a bat-bone on Vimeo, gifting fans an impossibly cool look at the sequel via a camera test. In it, Robert Pattinson's Batman – in full costume, no less – glares at the camera amid a snowy backdrop.

The Batman 2 also stars newcomers Sebastian Stan, Scarlet Johansson, and Charles Dance. There has been much speculation over which characters they will be portraying. Right now, Stan is inviting rumors about playing serial killer Victor Zsasz thanks to a new bald look, while the latest scuttlebutt around Hollywood is that Johansson could be joining the cast as Poison Ivy, with some fans thinking it was teased over a year ago.

Another live-action Batman movie is also happening over at DC Studios. The Brave and the Bold, directed by It and The Flash helmer Andy Muschietti, is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran's nascent DCU.

Xolo Maridueña is returning as Blue Beetle in the upcoming DCU movie Man of Tomorrow. He'll be reprising his role as Jaime Reyes, a teenager given super powers by an alien beetle, for the first time since his 2023 solo movie.

At the moment, it's not been revealed how he fits into the Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow, directed by James Gunn. However, we have known for a while that the DC Studios co-CEO has wanted the character as part of his universe.

Back in 2023, Gunn appeared on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast where he called Blue Beetle "the first DCU character". However, he did also clarify that "the first full DCU movie is Superman," which is a bit confusing. It seems Reyes is canon, but his movie is not.

Speaking more recently, Gunn said he feels that Reyes will "fit in very nicely" with his new DCU. He said in 2025 that he says only a "couple things" will have to be retconned to bring him in, just like with Peacemaker.

Man of Tomorrow sees David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult team up as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor in the fight against a new villain: Brainiac. It's looking like it will be a big team-up movie too with Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, Milly Alcock's Supergirl, Aaron Pierre's Green Lantern, and Adria Arjona's unnamed hero in the cast.

Much like Marvel's tactic with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, DC Studios is keeping its cards close to its chest when it comes to The Batman: Part 2's villain, but an old post from writer Mattson Tomlin could hint at who it could be.

Although it's only a little over a year before Robert Pattinson's caped crusader returns to our screens in The Batman 2, we still don't really know what the highly anticipated sequel will entail, or who Gotham's new big bad is. However, rumors of Scarlett Johansson's mystery role have started to swirl online, with multiple unofficial DC news pages stating that the star could be playing a grounded take on Poison Ivy.

Now, even though we must take this rumour with a grain of salt, co-writer Tomlin may have hinted at the role almost one year earlier. Back in July 2025, Tomlin shared the first Batman comic he ever read over on Twitter, Batman #181, published in June 1966. The comic marks Poison Ivy's DC Comics debut as she sparks trouble between Batman and Robin. Many DC fans think this could have been a sly hint at the upcoming installment, which makes a lot of sense now.

So, could Poison Ivy make an appearance? We haven't seen the villain on the big screen since Uma Thurman brought her to life in the 1997 movie Batman and Robin. The character has since appeared in multiple animated DC films and TV shows, and notably in the Batman Arkham games. However, if the villain were to enter Matt Reeves' moody Batman universe, we have a feeling she would look a lot different from Thurman's electric and eccentric villain.

The sequel may feature a string of DC baddies, as in addition to Poison Ivy rumours, Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry have also been cast in mystery roles, with many believing Stan will play sadistic serial killer Victor Zsasz and Henry will suit up as politician turned Two-Face, Harvey Dent. Behind-the-scenes snaps posted by Reeves also suggest that the criminal organisation known as the Court of Owls may play a major part in the new film.

Alongside Pattinson's Batman, the only confirmed characters for now are Andy Serkis's Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb, Jeffrey Wright's Jim Gordon, Jayme Lawson as Bella Real, and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez.

Four years after Warner Bros. decided against releasing Batgirl, star J.K. Simmons still has no idea why.

"It's bizarre. Apparently, one test audience saw it, and, you know, it wasn’t like it was like a bad score from the test audience," Simmons said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "It was, yeah, it was a whatever business decision obviously, and and then yeah, Justice League, which was a very small part, had its own drama attached to it. But then Zack’s cut... the director’s cut came out, which the DC fans, you know, really love."

Simmons played Commissioner Gordon in Joss Whedon's ill-fated Justice League, which hit theaters in 2017 and was released to largely negative reviews. He appeared in the famous Snyder Cut of the film, which prompted more fans to revisit his performance and praise it as underrated. He would then play Commissioner Gordon again in Batgirl, which starred Leslie Grace as his daughter Barbara Gordon aka the titular vigilante. Filmmaker duo El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directed from a screenplay by Christina Hodson.

However, the movie, which was slated for an eventual HBO Max release, was suddenly shelved in 2022. At the time, Warner Bros. claimed it was for cost-cutting reasons and a re-focus on theatrical releases. Later that year, James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios, which ended the DCEU and started the DCU. When asked about the film, Safran said that the film was "not releasable," but did not give a reason why.

"When Batgirl came along with Adil [El Arbi] and Bilall [Fallah] and, you know, it was an exciting prospect to be part of the origin story of Batgirl," Simmons continued. "For those who don’t know, Commissioner Gordon’s daughter. Maybe we’ll never know... We really had a good time making it and, you know, thought it was going to be a fun superhero movie. Oh well."

Despite rumors that he'd join the cast as Two-Face, Sebastian Stan has seemingly been spotted with a brand-new look while filming The Batman 2... and now DC fans think he might be playing Victor Zsasz in the upcoming sequel.

Here's the thing: The Batman 2 is indeed currently filming, but it hasn't been verified yet that this is a photo from July 2026 (and you can see it for yourself below). Stan shaved his head bald for Fjord, a legal thriller drama that was shot in 2025 and premiered at Cannes in May 2026. If this is a recent photo, that means Stan isn't playing Harvey Dent aka Two-Face after all... and there's some truth to the June 2026 report from The Insneider that claims Stan is playing sadomasochistic creepazoid Victor Zsasz, and that Brian Tyree Henry is playing Harvey Dent.

Though you may not be familiar with Zsasz, we've already seen him three times in live-action form: Tim Booth plays a version that works as an enforcer for Carmine in Batman Begins; Anthony Carrigan played him in the TV show Gotham, and Chris Messina portrayed him as a killer-for-hire who works for Black Mask in Birds of Prey. Zsasz first appeared in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1 back in 1992, and is known for carving a tally mark into his skin to represent each of his victims.

One fan shared an alleged screenshot from Stan's stylist Michael Fisher, in which he seems to have posted a fan-made photo of Stan as Harvey Dent in response to the clean-shaven photo... so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Anne Hathaway's audition story about The Dark Knight Rises is going viral again... and it'll always be iconic.

"Here's the thing that worked in my favor: she's a chameleon," Hathaway said in a new interview with Josh Horowitz during press for The Odyssey, which can be viewed below. "So, I knew I was auditioning for... I was meeting with Chris [Nolan] for the female role in the Batman trilogy, the next installment. I thought that I'd gamed it out, because I was just like, 'It can't be Catwoman because Michelle Pfeiffer was so iconic... [gasp] It's going to be Harley Quinn!'"

There are a few villains in The Dark Knight Rises, but none of them are The Joker (as Heath Ledger's untimely passing led to the introduction of Bane and Ra's al Ghul in the third and final installment). Though times have changed and it wouldn't be weird to introduce Harley Quinn as a solo character in 2026, it wouldn't have made much sense back in 2012. Still, Hathaway's reasoning that there's no way they could introduce Catwoman does make some sense...

"So, I spent a week developing demonic Harley Quinn energy. I was wearing weird jester flats and a striped top. And then, about two hours into our conversation, Chris is like, 'So, the part's Catwoman,' and I was like, 'Transform!' So, I just then decided that I was like, 'Well, this top is very sensual.' And I was going to be very... like a psychopath. I changed personalities like a psychopath."

Zoe Kravitz is the newest live-action Catwoman, having starred as Selina Kyle in Matt Reeves's The Batman. Margot Robbie famously played Harley Quinn in the last few DCEU projects. The newly rebooted DCU, however, has yet to cast its new Batman, Catwoman, or Harley Quinn (as the Reeves projects live in what's called Elseworlds, a separate universe that runs in tandem with the new DCU).

The Batman 2 screenwriter Mattson Tomlin has one of the most anticipated upcoming comic book movies in production, but despite this fact, Tomlin says he's fielding more offers for video game adaptations than superhero fare this year.

Speaking on Twitter, Tomlin – the co-writer of The Batman Part 2 alongside director Matt Reeves – responded to a question about his Mega Man adaptation falling by the wayside by noting that the project could come back around because video game adaptations are now all the rage in Tinseltown.

"Hollywood is sort of making a shift from being comic book obsessed to video game obsessed," Tomlin says. "So I wouldn’t be surprised if [Mega Man] sees the light of day in some form, but after so much time gone by, it’s unlikely I’ll have anything to do with it."

Tomlin further clarified his reasoning in another response: "My point of view is also born out of the fact that I am getting at least 5x more offers for video game adaptations than comic book adaptations this year." While Tomlin is speaking from anecdotal experience rather than offering empirical evidence of a sweeping change in Hollywood, the fact that video game adaptations are of increasing importance to moviedom is plain to see.

Already this year, Return to Silent Hill, Iron Lung, Exit 8 and Mortal Kombat 2 have all released in theaters, to varying degrees of success. Still to come are Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie, Street Fighter, and anime shows Sekiro: No Defeat and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2. Truly, the video game adaptation boom is upon us. Even the likes of A24 are getting in on the trend: the indie studio has a big-budget Elden Ring movie currently filming from Alex Garland, and A Quiet Place: Day One's Michael Sarnoski is adapting Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, though it'll be a different story from the games.

In comparison, comic book cinema is at perhaps its lowest ebb in almost two decades. Supergirl just bombed, making less than Morbius and Joker 2 in its opening weekend, and this month's Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the first Marvel movie in a year, though don't be surprised if it kills at the box office.

As for The Batman 2, the highly anticipated sequel sits outside James Gunn's DCU Chapter One as an Elseworlds entry. The movie is currently in pre-production, with filming set to begin imminently ahead of a 2027 release. Matt Reeves recently lifted the lid on the movie's cast, including Marvel stars Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson, but we still don't know for sure who they're playing.

James Gunn, perhaps more than most directors, has his favorites. From his brother Sean Gunn, to long-time collaborators Michael Rooker, Steve Agee, and Nathan Fillion, the DC Studios boss has long populated his casts with both friends and family.

Now, Jennifer Holland, wife of Gunn and an actor in her own right, most notably as Emilia Harcourt in Peacemaker, has revealed why the Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy director surrounds himself with so many familiar faces.

"It really just comes about because James loves to have his friends and family around him all the time," Holland explained to CinemaBlend. "It's hard to make movies; it's lonely. You're stuck in a place that's not your home for a very long period of time."

Holland added, "You don't have all of your friends and family with you, so as much as he can include friends and family in his movies, he tries. That gives them an excuse to be around and he really thrives on that. As much as he is a loner when it comes to sitting in an office, typing on his computer… he really is inspired by and revived by true relationships."

To that end, Gunn has even based the look and mannerisms of Krypto on his own rescue dog, Ozu.

Next up for Gunn is Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to Superman, which is currently filming.

Speaking to GamesRadar+ in a separate interview, Holland teased the movie as perhaps Gunn's finest work yet.

"I can tell you that I have seen an enormous, enormous portion of the movie, and I am so excited for Man of Tomorrow," Holland said at a screening of upergirl. "It is different...I don't wanna say this. Ugh. It might be James's best… my favorite movie of James, and I haven't even seen the whole thing yet. I love the movie. I'm really excited about it. It feels like a step up to me in a lot of ways. I'm excited for people to see it, and he's not done filming it yet."

Man of Tomorrow, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Milly Alcock, and more, flies into cinemas on July 9, 2027.
