Hideo Kojima is no stranger to a cameo or two, having appeared in everything from the Japanese dub of Zootopia 2 to the streets of Night City in Cyberpunk 2077. And that's without mentioning the several times he's broken the fourth wall by appearing in one of his own titles.

But good luck trying to recognize the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding developer in his latest on-screen outing.

Kojima turned up in the latest episode of Vivant, a Japanese crime drama, as the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency.

As you can see below, however, Kojima – sans glasses and beard – isn't exactly noticeable at first glance.

Explaining why he looks so different, Kojima took to Twitter to explain that CGI was used to tweak his appearance, mostly because he looked too young for such a senior role (despite being 62 years old), as well as the ongoing stigma around members of authority having facial hair in Japanese society.

Kojima wrote, "I took off my glasses, slicked my hair back, put on the costume, and gave it a shot, but as the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, it was deemed 'too young' and 'no precedent for a [beard],' so it was adjusted with CG."

Away from lighting up the screen, Kojima – one year on from the release of Death Stranding 2 – is hard at work at multiple new games.

The upcoming Hideo Kojima games include O.D., which stars Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer, and PS5 title Physint.

Despite her character's fate in season 1, Krysten Ritter is set to return in Dexter: Resurrection season 2.

Per a press release, Ritter is set to return as a guest star in season 2 after her "fan-favorite character, the vivacious and voracious Lady Vengeance (Mia Lapierre), met her demise while in prison." The nature of her demise has been a massive debate amongst fans, as the season finale gives us a teeny tiny detail that she may have faked her death.

When Dexter is trapped in Prater's creepy serial killer archive in episode 10, he opens Mia's file. The file in question lists her status as "active," leading fans to believe the whole bribing a prison guard to kill her and make it look like a suicide didn't actually happen, and that Prater's (former) assistant Charley may have helped her get away.

Uma Thurman is indeed set to return as Charley, with Brian Cox joining the cast as The New York Ripper and Dan Stevens as The Five Borough Killer. Whether Ritter is returning as Mia, or rejoining as a new character entirely, remains to be seen.

Star Michael C. Hall announced back in October that Dexter: Resurrection would indeed return, despite the cancellation of prequel series Dexter: Original Sin and the still-in-pre-production spin-off based on the flagship show's Trinity Killer.

Bryan Cranston has revealed that he had no idea whether Walter White was telling the truth during a key dramatic moment from Breaking Bad.

In the fourth season, Walt plots to turn Jesse (Aaron Paul) against drug crime lord Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). To do so, he poisons Brock, the child of a woman – Andrea – that Jesse is dating, framing the incident as the work of the Los Pollos Hermanos manager.

During one explosive confrontation, Jesse threatens Walt, believing that his one-time meth cook mentor was the one pulling the strings.

While that is the truth, Cranston's reactions as Walt were acted as if he truly believed Gus was the one responsible, even asking Jesse to shoot him if he felt that Walt was the one who spiked Brock using Lily of the Valley.

Speaking on Variety's Actors on Actors with Better Call Saul actor Rhea Seehorn, Cranston recalled how he played the moment – and ended up being completely wrong.

"I'm going, 'Why would I do that?' I point the finger in the direction of Giancarlo Esposito's character… Then, the next episode [script] came a few days later and I'm reading it and I go, 'Oh, I did do it.' Oops. My bad!"

However, Cranston said he would have still acted the same way in the scene, pointing towards Walt's need to be "believable" in any scenario.

As Seehorn pointed out, actors on Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan's shows rarely have the luxury of looking ahead. She said they "don't generally even get told an outline of what the whole season will be."

Script or no script, Seehorn is collaborating once more with Gilligan on the upcoming Pluribus season 2. Gilligan admitted it would take time for the new season to air but, as of February, is "deeper" into the creative process.

The first trailer for Sugar season 2 has arrived, and John Sugar is back on the case.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, Sugar is tasked with another missing persons case... which involves gang violence, a corrupt police force, and a whole new cast of characters.

Season 2 sees Sugar return to investigate a new case: finding the missing older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer (as his search for his beloved missing sister continues). According to the official synopsis: "As the investigation expands into a city-wide conspiracy with sinister intentions, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question – how far will he go to do what’s right?"

Newcomers to the cast include Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Marvel's very own Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly, Sasha Calle, and Shea Whigham. You might also recall that rather dramatic twist at the end of season 1, which is teased oh so lightly at the end of the season 2 trailer: "Where are you from?" Charlotte asks. "Can we skip that one?" Sugar replies.

The series, created by The Cell and I Am Legend screenwriter Mark Protosevich, premiered on Apple TV Plus back in 2024 and was swiftly renewed for a second season. It also received an Emmy nomination for Best Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half Hour). Sam Catlin, creator of AMC's Preacher, takes over as showrunner for season 2.

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has the final word on Skyler White hate after his Malcolm in the Middle co-star Frankie Muniz shared his unfavorable thoughts on the character.

Although he "loved Breaking Bad," Muniz said that he "wanted to kill Skyler to make [Walter's] life easier" during an appearance on Hot Ones Versus with Cranston. He added, "Your life would have been so much easier! You were such a bad guy, you could have just gotten rid of her. All she did was complain! Look at the money!"

Cranston instantly came to the defense of his on-screen wife. "Now, see, she got a lot of blowback from that," he replied. "Well, first of all, Anna Gunn is a superb actor, but she got, 'Oh, why don’t you get off his back?' Wait a minute. Let me understand this. Her husband leaves without any explanation, she’s pregnant, he’s making crystal methamphetamine and people have died. And she’s the bitch? Like, we couldn’t understand."

Skyler, pregnant when the show begins, sees her chemistry teacher husband hit with a terminal cancer diagnosis – before turning to making meth to secure his family's financial future at any cost. She proved to be a hugely unpopular character with some viewers of the show. In a tale as old as time, it seems audiences struggled to extend their sympathies for flawed, complicated characters as far as a woman…

Muniz and Cranston, meanwhile, recently re-teamed for the Malcolm in the Middle reboot Life's Still Unfair. Set almost 20 years after the end of the original show, Muniz's beleaguered middle child reunites with his estranged family at his parents' 40th wedding anniversary party.

Dexter: Resurrection season 2 is indeed moving forward, and with Succession star Brian Cox in tow.

According to Deadline, Coz is set to play The New York Ripper... one of creepy millionaire Leon Prater's (Peter Dinklage) favorite serial killers. Though he's no longer active as a killer, he's "found a new way to live into his infamy by continuing to taunt the survivors of his long-ago murder spree." You might remember that the season 1 finale saw Dexter find the real name of The New York Ripper, Don Frampt, amongst Prater's serial killer memorabilia.

Star Michael C. Hall announced back in October that Dexter: Resurrection was set to return, which was good news for fans who thought it was up for cancellation after Dexter: Original Sin was scrapped (even after its season 2 renewal was publicly announced).

The first season saw Dexter wake up from his coma (after his son shot him at the end of Dexter: New Blood) and head to New York City in order to find him. Resurrection picks up just t10 weeks after the finale of New Blood, which ran for just one season in 2021. It was Hall's idea to bring Dexter back from the dead, previously telling GamesRadar+ that he had pointed out to the studio that Dexter was not shot in the head and could therefore survive.

Cox is best known for playing the patriarch of the Roy family in the Emmy award-winning drama Succession, and can be seen next in the British comedy Glenrothan alongside Alan Cumming.

Dune star Javier Bardem is here to make Amy Adams' life – and his eyeballs hurt like – hell in the nightmarish, bloody teaser for Apple TV's Cape Fear.

Based on Martin Scorsese's 1991 thriller of the same name, which was itself inspired by John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel The Executioners, the new 10-episode show sees Bardem play Max Cady, a recently reintegrated killer who vows to get revenge on the attorneys who put him in prison. Said attorneys? Patrick Wilson's Tom and Amy Adams' Anna, who seem appropriately unsettled when he reintroduces himself to them in the promo. Check it out above.

Judging by certain shots in the teaser (and Adam's accent), the series has kept the deep-south setting of Scorsese's adaptation. No real surprise there, though, considering he's one of its executive producers alongside Stephen Spielberg. It looks pretty blood-soaked, too, which is more in keeping with his interpretation than MacDonald's book or J. Lee Thompson's more faithful flick from 1962. One thing to note, however, is that this version of the Bowdens have both a son and a daughter. In Scorsese's movie, they only had the latter.

It opens with Anna ominously asking Tom via voiceover: "You ever look around and wonder, 'Do we deserve all this?'" As the trailer goes on, and we see Cady terrorize the family in increasingly violent ways, that question gets a sinister twist, as it switches to Bardem's Cady muttering, "You deserve this" over and over.

As it plays out, we see shots of a kid being held underwater, Cady stalking the Bowdens' daughter, and someone being run over by a car. "Is there any way Max could know about what we did?" Anna quizzes Tom after a montage of chaos rolls out. Erm, yes, I think he may be onto you, Anna. Will they be able to stop him before he blows up their domestic bliss?

The Payday games are coming to the big (and/or small) screen: Starbreeze Entertainment has partnered with VICE Studios with the aim of creating "film and TV adaptations" of the video game franchise.

According to a press release issued by Starbreeze, the two companies will "collaborate closely to ensure that future adaptations capture PAYDAY’s tone, characters, and high-stakes heist energy, while inviting new audiences into the franchise."

"Our goal is to grow Payday from a game into a full entertainment platform, owning the heisting genre," said Starbreeze CEO Adolf Kristjansson. "Payday is the cornerstone franchise for Starbreeze, and we’re highly selective about partners who can expand its universe beyond games. VICE Studios is the perfect partner for this project, combining creative ambition with the production capability to develop premium adaptations that feel authentic to Payday."

"Payday has a world that is bigger than the game itself," VICE Studios president Amy Powell added. "There’s mythology behind the masks and a crew of characters with real history that is incredibly exciting to explore. Partnering with Starbreeze Entertainment, we’re excited to build that universe and see how far it can go on screen."

Payday: The Heist was released back in 2011, and two sequels followed in 2013 and 2023. The first-person shooter franchise follows a group of thieves and involves carrying out a series of heists, including robbing banks, shops, and armored transport.

As for VICE, the company has been involved in the production of recent titles like crime actioner Gangs of London and the upcoming Saorise Ronan-led comedy-drama Bad Apples.

After six seasons on TV, Peaky Blinders is making the leap to the big screen with The Immortal Man. Playing now in select theaters ahead of its Netflix release later this month, The Immortal Man is set some six years after the events of season 6, and was conceived as a feature-length conclusion to Tommy Shelby's story, according to director Tom Harper.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Harper (who previously helmed three episodes during season one, before the likes of Wild Rose and Heart of Stone) explained how plans for a Peaky Blinders movie changed over the years, and the ways The Immortal Man differs from the long-running show in order to make it more cinematic.

"Just inherently, the way we thought about it was slightly different in terms of the writing," Harper says. "It's a more singular story than the series. The series obviously jumps around from character to character, and you have multiple story lines going at any one time. This is much more focused on Tommy and this particular chapter of his life. So I think that just inherently it is more cinematic in its conception.

"Having a bit more time and money to enhance the production values is slightly different," Harper continues. "Shooting on location is really important to me. Having the ability to be able to go to all the different places that we found, from Liverpool to Manchester to Birmingham to Stoke to Leeds to Bradford… Being able to do that, rather than do it in visual effects or build it in a studio, imbues everything with a different feel and a different tone. So it's the combination of those multiple things that I think give it that cinematic filmic feel."

Unfolding against the backdrop of World War 2, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man sees Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) on a redemptive mission to save his son, Duke (Barry Keoghan), who's been caught up in a Nazi plot to tank the British economy. Though it's taken over a decade for a Peaky Blinders movie to happen, Harper confirms that series creator Steven Knight mentioned the idea to him way back in 2014, ahead of season 2.

"It was just when we'd won an RTS award, I think, and we were going up on stage and he said, 'I'm going to make a film of [Peaky Blinders] in between seasons one and two, or two and three, do you want to do it?' And I was like, 'Yeah, definitely.' And then I never heard from him for another 13 years!"

In the years since then, Cillian Murphy has become a powerhouse performer, culminating in his Best Actor Academy Award win for Oppenheimer. Harper, notes that the actor he reunited with for The Immortal Man was "both different and the same" as the one he first worked with 13 years ago.

"Like everyone who I've worked with again and and indeed myself, we've we've grown up more. We're older. We're wiser, hopefully. We've suffered more pain and more joy and more positives and more negatives. And that changes the dynamic, but we're still all the same people, I think. That makes it really interesting. Cillian has had a phenomenal career. He was brilliant 13 years ago and he's brilliant today, but he's more powerful now. He has such a powerful presence and there's a confidence and a clarity to his his performance that I think is has really he's grown into."

In a conversation with GameRadar+, Cillian Murphy explains how The Immortal Man is the "natural conclusion" of Tommy Shelby's decades-spanning story, while franchise newbie Rebecca Ferguson says the new movie works as a "standalone film."

Colin Farrell's detective show Sugar is coming back really soon, as Apple TV just confirmed that season 2 will release on June 19. With eight new episodes set to arrive on streaming over the summer, the show will feature Farrell's LA-based Private Investigator as he takes on a new case.

In the first season, viewers followed John Sugar as he solved the disappearance of the beloved granddaughter of a big Hollywood producer, and unearthed some dark truths in the process. We won't reveal more than that for those who still have to catch up with the first season, as it features a huge plot twist that blends crime thriller and science fiction.

The new season will see the detective returning to investigate a new case, "tracking the troubled older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer as his search for his beloved missing sister continues", according to the official synopsis. "As the investigation expands into a city-wide conspiracy with sinister intentions, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question – how far will he go to do what’s right?"

Joining Farrell in the cast for season 2 are Pachinko star Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly and The Flash's Sasha Calle, with Shea Whigham as a guest star. Sam Catlin is the showrunner of the season, with the show created by Mark Protosevich.

Speaking to GamesRadar+ in an exclusive interview ahead of the first season in 2024, Farrell admitted he was surprised by the script. "My first reaction was that it was just a little bit different," he said. "I hadn't had the opportunity to read anything like it ever. The character was felt quite unique in that it was obviously exploring the noir genre as a whole. The piece, the narrative, the style of it, the fact that it was set in Los Angeles, the world that explores the idea that the central character was a private detective."

"But there was this kind of innocence to John Sugar as much as he at times gets embroiled in violence, he has a disdain for violence and as much as he's been exposed to some of the darker aspects of the human experience through trafficking and kidnapping, he has this kind of unbridled sense of hope and belief in the goodness of human beings, which I thought was really quite sweet and engaging."

Apple TV has removed the upcoming French crime show The Hunt from its December slate after finding out it has stolen its story from a '70s novel.

The Hunt, otherwise known as Traqués was supposed to release on Apple TV on Wednesday, December 3, but the streamer has now delayed the series indefinitely. This is because the show's creator and director, Cédric Anger, has been accused of plagiarizing the 1973 novel Shoot by Douglas Fairbairn, as reported by Apple Insider.

The news was later confirmed by the show's producer. In a statement shared with Variety, Gaumont said, "The broadcast of our series The Hunt has been temporarily postponed. We are currently conducting a thorough review to address any questions related to our production. We take intellectual property matters very seriously."

However, when you look at the descriptions for both the upcoming TV show and the original book, there is no denying the similarities. Starring Benoît Magimel and Mélanie Laurent, The Hunt follows a man named Franck and his friends who, whilst on a hunting trip, are suddenly targeted by another group without any explanation. When one of their party is shot, Franck and co strike back, shooting one of the attackers. After they escape, Franck and his friends try to keep the events a secret. However, a few days later, he starts to feel as though he is being watched, or even tracked by hunters who are now hell-bent on revenge.

Now, let's take a look at the synopsis for the novel Shoot. Following a hunter named Rex and his buddies, Shoot sees the group embark on a hunting trip where they meet a rival band of hunters. When one of them takes a shot at Rex’s party, Rex's friend shoots back and kills one of the rival hunters. Rex and co manage to escape and agree to keep the murder a secret. However, Rex is certain the dead man’s companions are after him, and so he returns to the scene.

In 1976, Shoot was adapted into a movie of the same name, directed by Harvey Hart, starring Cliff Robertson, Ernest Borgnine, and Henry Silva.

Pluribus writer-director Gordon Smith says there's no need to reveal what the hit sci-fi show is actually about...because then it will essentially become "meaningless."

"There are themes that come to mind, but it's less rich to say, 'Oh, this is a show about fill-in-the-blank.' If I said that it's a metaphor about not using your phone, you don't need to watch the show," Smith told The Hollywood Reporter. "The show becomes useless. The show becomes meaningless. There are AI proponents that are going to watch the show, and they might feel attacked or they might feel supported. But for us to say, "No, it should just be this one-to-one correspondence," it limits both the storytelling and the availability of the show to ask questions that people are going to be interested in. This is such a conceptual show, and my hope is that it makes people think about and feel different things in different ways."

The series, set in New Mexico, follows a romantasy author named Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn) who is one of the only people in the world immune to the effects of a mysterious virus that has turned everyone else into members of an eerily calm hive mind known as 'the Others.' And if you still don't know what it's about, neither do I...and neither does Seehorn, actually.

The end credits of each episode contain the sentence, "This show was made by humans," prompting some viewers to theorize that the show is a metaphor for society's slow descent into a reliance on AI. We're not quite yet halfway through the first season (and the show was already greenlit for a second before the first even premiered), so there's a long way to go before we find out Smith and creator Vince Gilligan are trying to tell us...and we're in no rush to find out.

One of the most humbling experiences as a filmmaker has to be screening a movie or TV shows to an audience, and no one knows that better than Pluribus creator Vince Gilligan, who was put off test-screenings for life after his '00s X-Files spin-off.

"We had a spin-off show of The X-Files called The Lone Gunmen, which I was very proud of, and I still have a soft spot for it," said Gilligan to Sony. "I had to sit through audience testing on the first episode of that show, and I swore on the graves of my forefathers, I will never freaking do that again."

The showrunner explained that the audience had a device where they would turn the knob to the right if they liked a particular scene, and to the left if they didn't like it. "There's a scene where one of the characters gets sick and throws up in a golf bag, and all the needles went [to the left]," said Gilligan. But the worst part was that afterwards the audience was asked if they found it funny, and one viewer turned to the two-way mirror, which Gilligan was sitting behind, and said, "Well, it's no Will and Grace." Ouch.

Released in 2001, The Lone Gunmen was set in the same world as the highly popular X-Files series, but rather than dealing with aliens and paranormal events, Gilligan's comedy show looked at other secret activities like government-sponsored terrorism and corporate crime. However, despite being met with positive reviews, the show was canceled after thirteen episodes.

The screening experience would haunt Gilligan for years to come. Before his 2008 crime show, Breaking Bad, hit screens, the writer couldn't even face sending it to test-screen audiences. "When Breaking Bad came along, I said, 'If you guys are going to test this, don't tell me about it. I want the tree that fell in the forest. I don't want to know anything about it,'" said Gilligan. "Apparently, they did test it. They never even told me the results."

Gilligan really had nothing to worry about, though, as Breaking Bad went on to release eight seasons, win multiple awards, and is often regarded as one of the best series ever made. Now, Gilligan is seeing similar success with his new Apple TV show Pluribus, which is already winning over fans. The mind-bending sci-fi series debuted to rave reviews and a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite ranking as one of the top series on the streaming network, Peacock has decided not to renew its Natasha Lyonne starring mystery procedural Poker Face for a third season (via Deadline). There may yet be hope for fans, however, as series creator Rian Johnson wants to bring the show to a new streamer.

There's another surprise twist to the idea of Poker Face joining a new streaming service: Lyonne would depart the lead role of Charlie Cale, which would be taken over by none other than Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage. Yes, you read that right - Dinklage would play the same character Lyonne plays in the first two seasons of the show.

The idea of recasting a character - even a starring one - is just a fact of life for television, with numerous high profile examples over the years. However, it's far more rare for an established character to switch to a totally different actor with no intent of continuity. Even the different portrayals of James Bond are essentially new performances of mostly the same guy, for example.

Apparently it's part of a specific plan by Johnson to keep the series going for quite a while by putting a new, unexpected actor in the role of Charlie Cale, the amateur detective who can always sense a lie, every two seasons. Should Poker Face be picked up by a new streamer, Lyonne will remain in place as an executive producer.

"We've been germinating this next move together since writing the season two finale. We love our Poker Face and this is the perfect way to keep it rolling," said Johnson and Lyonne in a joint statement. "Give us a beat and we may just see Charlie Cale again down that open highway."

Netflix's new series Monster: The Ed Gein Story may be drawing in a lot of viewers, but one person who vows not to watch the true crime retelling is Longlegs director and the son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins, Osgood Perkins.

"I wouldn’t watch it with a 10-foot pole,” said the director to TMZ. Perkins added that Netflix has taken the true crime genre and tuned it into "glamorous and meaningful content," and worries that true crime cases are being “reshaped in real time by overlords.”

Played by Joey Pollari, Perkins' late father appears in the series, which shows the actor taking on the role of Norman Bates in Psycho. The Ed Gein Story looks at the films that were inspired by the killer's horrific crimes, including Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 movie Psycho, Tobe Hooper's 1974 slasher The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Jonathan Demme's 1991 psychological horror The Silence of the Lambs.

The show also delves very deeply into Anthony Perkins' personal life. One episode in particular shows the star struggling as a closeted actor and feeling like a 'monster' due to his role as Bates and his sexuality. Although the star's sexuality was an open secret in Hollywood, we don't think Osgood Perkins appreciates his father's business being displayed on the streamer, which no doubt took certain liberties.

Perkins told TMZ that the genre as a whole is "increasingly devoid of context and that the Netflix-ization of real pain is playing for the wrong team." Anthony Perkins remained married to Osgood’s mother until his death from AIDS at age 60 in 1992.

However, the new season is not the first to face controversy. Created by American Horror Story's Ryan Murphy, the first season, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starring Evan Peters, looked at serial killer and suspected cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer and his string of murders in the '80s. The second, Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story, covered the case of the Menendez brothers and the murder of their parents.

Much like The Ed Gein Story, both seasons 1 and 2 faced backlash upon release due to their controversial nature. Murphy has been criticized both by viewers and victims' families over the show taking creative liberties, exaggerating, and fabricating certain details. But this hasn't stopped Murphy, who is already making Monster season 4, which will focus on suspected axe murderer Lizzie Borden.

Based on one of America's most prolific and downright evil killers, new true crime drama series Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy is now available to stream, and if the final trailer isn't enough to persuade you to tune in, we don't know what will.

The new video opens with serial killer John Wayne Gacy, played by Severance star Michael Chernus, making his confession. But what is most striking is how uncanny Chernus is as the murderer, both in appearance and voice. The rest of the clip shows the police uncover Gacy's horrendous crimes and discover what's under his house.

However, differing from the first trailer, this clip goes deeper into Gacy's psyche and how he was able to balance his double life as a community figure and a monster. "There's really four Gacys," says Chernus, "John the contractor, John the politician, John the clown. And then there's the other guy." Watch the new trailer below.

Set in Chicago, 1978, Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy takes a closer look at the twisted and very real case of American serial killer John Wayne Gacy, who violated, tortured, and murdered at least thirty-three young men and boys. According to Peacock, the series will answer just how he was able to get away with it for so long due to systemic failures and him appearing as a 'nice guy' who even volunteered to entertain sick kids...while dressed as a clown.

Alongside Chernus, the eight-episode limited series also features The Last of Us star Gabriel Luna, James Badge Dale, Michael Angarano, Chris Sullivan, and Marin Ireland. Patrick Macmanus penned the script and serves as showrunner.

Gacy's story will only run for one season as Devil Disguise has already been greenlit for a second season focusing on serial killer Richard Ramirez, aka The Night Stalker, as reported by Variety. Ramirez terrorized Southern California in the mid-'80s and is believed to have killed at least 15 people. However, because the killer's victims varied in age and gender, it is not known just how many lives he took.

Actor Charlie Hunnam is about to go from portraying one of the most famous murderers in history to one of the most famous murder victims as he takes on a new role in Monster season 4.

True to Monster co-creator Ryan Murphy's tradition of using ensemble casts that stretch across seasons of his many anthology series, Hunnam will return to Monster as Andrew Borden, murdered father of Lizzie Borden, the subject of season 4.

Lizzie herself will be played by Ella Beatty. Meanwhile, Vicky Krieps stars as the Bordens' maid Bridget Sullivan; Rebecca Hall will play Lizzie’s stepmother, Abby Borden; Billie Lourd stars as Lizzie’s older sister Emma; and Jessica Barden will play actress Nance O’Neill, Lizzie's friend.

Several of the cast have appeared in other seasons of Monster or in Murphy's other shows such as American Horror Story, a common casting trope for the producer. In particular, the addition of Hunnam as Lizzie's father is unsurprising given his chillingly demure portrayal of Ed Gein, propelling the show to Netflix's top ten, as the role will be particularly key to the telling of the Borden family murders.

The relationship between Lizzie and her father - and the accusation that she murdered him as well as her step-mother - have become the stuff of legend thanks to the enduring mysteries surrounding the case, and a macabre nursery rhyme that has left an indelible mark on the common memory of the murders.

If you don't know it, the rhyme goes:

Lizzie Borden took an ax
And gave her father 40 whacks
When she saw what she had done
She gave her mother 41

The rhyme doesn't convey much confirmed truth, serving more as an early version of a playground urban legend, passed around for a bit of a scary thrill. While Hunnam's portrayal of Ed Gein was one of the most accurate parts of a show that depicted many wholly fictional events, it's that tradition of sensationalizing already intriguing and horrifying stories that need no extra dressing to impress that gives me pause.

The fact that Borden was also acquitted of her crimes could make for a strange twist in the show's portrayal of history, as it has never been proven what truly happened in Fall River, Massachusetts on August 4, 1892. I'm not convinced Murphy and co won't take the opportunity to embellish their own version of what might have taken place.

Either way, season 4 of Monster is currently in production for an unspecified premiere date. While we wait to learn more, check out the 25 best shows you can stream on Netflix right now.

After winning over fans and critics, Dexter spin-off series Dexter: Resurrection has been greenlit for another season over at Paramount, with star Michael C Hall announcing the news in the most Dexter Morgan way possible.

Hall shared the news on Dexter: Resurrection's official YouTube channel via a very relaxed and informal video, which you can watch below. The clip opens with Hall seemingly asleep when he quickly opens his eyes and thanks fans for tuning into Resurrections, adding, "We've been greenlit for another season. There's more to come."

Hall said that he wanted to be the first person to let fans know that "the story continues." Dexter: Resurrections season 2 does not yet have a filming start date, but Hall confirmed, "The writer's room is assembling now, and details will be forthcoming."

Dexter fans are obviously overjoyed with the news, but most importantly, they love the delivery from Hall. "Gotta love that they didn't film an expensive announcement in a studio, it's just MCH filming himself in portrait mode, looking like he just woke up," commented one fan, and another added, "Dexter plays Michael so well."

The renewal is a big win for Dexter fans who were saddened to see prequel series Dexter: Original Sin scrapped at Paramount just months after it was renewed for a second season.

Set over 10 years after elusive Miami serial killer Dexter Morgan faked his own death in Showtime's hit series Dexter, Dexter: Resurrections follows the ex-blood splatter analyst as he recovers from a near-fatal gunshot wound and heads to New York City to trace his missing son. Resurrection picks up just ten weeks after Dexter: New Blood, Dexter Morgan, which ran for just one season in 2021.

The star-studded spin-off proved to be a big hit with fans and critics, earning the spin-off a near-perfect 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series welcomes back Dexter's Hall and David Zayas and adds Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, and more.

Netflix's Monster: The Ed Gein Story has come under fire for its wholly fictionalized portrayal of certain events and the twisting of his actual life story to reflect aspects of later stories that were loosely inspired by his crimes. However, star Charlie Hunnam, who plays Gein in the series, says he "never felt like we were sensationalizing" the tale of Gein's life.

"I never felt like we were sensationalizing it. I never felt on set that we did anything gratuitous or for shock impact. It was all in order to try to tell this story as honestly as we could," Hunnam tells EW. "If people are compelled to talk about it and think about it, hopefully they'll actually be compelled to watch the show. What I would hope and feel really confident in is that it was a very sincere exploration of the human condition and why this boy did what he did."

Unfortunately for those committed to honesty and historicity in relating such a grave story, the show spends most of its time on supposition, fictionalization, and twisting of actual facts into a comic, camp narrative that barely reflects what we actually know of Ed Gein's life and crimes.

"Is it Ed Gein who was abused and left in isolation and suffering from undiagnosed mental illness and...that manifested in some pretty horrendous ways? Or was the monster the legion of filmmakers that took inspiration from his life and sensationalized it to make entertainment and darken the American psyche in the process?" Hunnam says, asking viewers to consider the actual "monster" of the story. "Is Ed Gein the monster of this show, or is Hitchcock the monster of the show? Or are we the monster of the show because we're watching it?"

These are perhaps ironic questions for Monster, which fails to honestly answer most of these philosophical concepts or even give actual space to exploring them in between portrayals of Gein as an irresistible ladies man who actually chased people with a chainsaw (both lies crafted for the show).

With the Peaky Blinders movie starring Cillian Murphy heading to cinemas very soon, fans can rest assured that the franchise is not going anywhere, as two new brand-new series have been announced. Set after the events of the flagship show, the upcoming shows will introduce a new generation of Shelbys.

From writer and creator Steven Knight, the new story from the world of the Peaky Blinders will be set in Birmingham in 1953.

"After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel," reads the official logline. "The race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart."

The two shows, which are set to be released on Netflix in the US and the BBC in the UK, will be filmed at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham, where the movie was shot too. It has Cillian Murphy as one of its producers, but he's not been announced as part of the cast.

"I'm thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story," said Knight in an official statement. "Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride."

Knight previously teased that there was more to come in the saga after the movie, and he was not lying.

The upcoming film, which follows the events of the hugely popular six-season show, wrapped production on December 13 last year, although a cinema release date is yet to be announced.

Directed by Heart of Stone helmer Tom Harper, it's set during World War Two, with the Shelby family dealing with their own personal war. It's possible that some new characters introduced in the movie end up starring in the recently announced shows, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Alongside Murphy, the Peaky Blinders film stars Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan, with Natasha O’Keeffe, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, and Kate Phillips set to reprise their roles from the BBC show.

In order to get the voice of serial killer Ed Gein just right for the third season of Netflix's Monster, Charlie Hunnam went down a dark rabbit hole that led him to a rare recording that even Netflix couldn't find.

"Our best researchers couldn’t get it," director Max Winkler told Variety. "But Charlie got it, because he’s Charlie and he does crazy shit." It's important to known that Gein, like most famous serial killers, has a specfically unsettling voice, with Winkler putting it somewhere between Mark Rylance in the play Jerusalem and Michael Jackson. Because the murders, as well as Gein's subsequent arrest, took place between the 40s and 60s, there isn't much record of his voice – save for a few grainy recordings.

According to Hunnam, he reached out to Joshua Kunau, producer of the documentary "Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein." Kunau handed over a 70-minute interview with Gein, conducted by police the night he was arrested.

"I started to see him through a series of affectations to please his mother," Hunnam said. "That’s where the voice came from."

If you aren't familiar, Gein is the farmer-turned-grave robber who murdered several women, in addition to digging up corpses from graveyards in order to make clothing and keepsakes from skin and other body parts. These horrifying acts would go on to inspire horror movie villains as Norman Bates from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (mainly due to Gein's extremely strange and toxic relationship with his mother), Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs, and Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Monster: The Ed Gein Story is the third season of Ryan Murphy's true crime Monster series, with the first two following Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez Brothers. Both seasons earned a combined total of 24 Emmy nominations (and from what I've seen so far, I think this season will follow suit).

Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has never looked scarier as he does in the newest trailer for Netflix's upcoming serial killer series Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

The new trailer, which you can watch below, gives us a deeper look at Charlie Hunnam's awkward, social outcast Ed Gein and his mother. "Eddie you're a mess," says his mother," only a mother could love you." However, their relationship turns darker when Ed presents his naked body to his mother. When his mother dies, Gein can be seen touching her body inappropriately which leads to him wearing her skin.

The rest of the clip, which includes the song 'It's a Sin' by The Pet Shop Boys in the background, shows Gein preserving human skin, wearing other peoples faces, and abducting young women. The trailer also gives us our first look at Thanksgiving star and musician Addison Rae as one of Gein's victims.

2025 was already a stacked year for true crime dramas from Netflix's Monster: The Ed Gein Story to Peacock's Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy. But now Hulu has added another series to the list, Murdaugh: Death in the Family, and its first trailer is rather creepy.

In the new clip, we meet a powerful and deeply connected Southern American family who begin to unravel when one of their own is killed on their property. The rest of the trailer shows that the family was already corrupted before the murders happened. But their secrets will soon be unveiled as an ambitious journalist is hot on their tails. As per the official synopsis from Hulu, Murdaugh: Death in the Family follows Maggie and Alex Murdaugh, part of one of South Carolina's most powerful legal dynasties "But when their son Paul is involved in a deadly boat crash, the family is faced with a test unlike any they've ever encountered. As details come to light and new challenges emerge, the family's connections to several mysterious deaths raise questions which threaten everything Maggie and Alex hold dear."

The limited series is inspired by the Murdaugh Murders Podcast by Mandy Matney. The long-running podcast discusses the criminal investigations surrounding the 2021 double homicide of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh, which brought up insurance fraud, drugs, and murder, and other crimes surrounding the family.

This is not the first time the Mardaugh murders have seen screentime. In 2023, Netflix released a six-part documentary series titled Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, which further exposed the horrifying secrets surrounding the Murdaugh family.

The series stars Patricia Arquette as Maggie Murdaugh, Jason Clarke as Alex Murdaugh, Johnny Berchtold as Paul Murdaugh, and Brittany Snow as the journalist and podcaster Mandy Matney. This is not the first time that Severance star Arquette has been a part of a true crime retelling, as the star played Gypsy-Rose Blanchard's mother Dee Dee in Hulu's 2019 series The Act.

True Detective star Matthew McConaughey says he'd return to the hit HBO series, but only under one condition: the script would need to live up to season 1.

"We nailed that first season," he said in a new interview with Variety. "But if it’s a script like that first one, with that fire and originality, I’d do it. And you talk about monologues. Well, Rust Cohle had a monologue. He talked about everything that was inside him, and he didn’t care if you were listening or not. There’s freedom in that."

Each season of the anthology crime drama centers around a different pair of detectives in a different part of the US. Season 1, which aired in 2014, saw McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, Louisiana State Police homicide detectives investigating the murder of a young woman. It was a hit with audiences and critics, and the show has never quite returned to the highs of its first season.

"I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me," the actor previously said of his season. "And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning. Even though I made it, I sort of forgot what was going to happen next. It was one of the great events in TV."

Subsequent installments of True Detective have starred Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff, and Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, taking the action from California to the Ozarks to Alaska. The upcoming fifth season will be set in New York State, and reportedly stars Nicolas Cage. "He’s a great actor, and I’d like to see him in that world," McConaughey said of Cage's casting.

While it looks like David Fincher’s Mindhunter series may never return to Netflix, true crime followers have another project to look forward to as Peacock’s Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy is coming to streaming, and it’s first trailer is positively spine-chilling.

The trailer opens with a 15 year old boy approaching a construction manager at night looking for work. The next thing we know, that same boy goes missing, which leads police right to the door of that construction manager, John Wayne Gacy. The next few clips show detectives searching Gacy’s house where they make a chilling discovery down in the home’s crawl space. Watch the full trailer below.

Of course, the series is based on one of America’s most prolific serial killers, John Wayne Gacy. Known as the 'Killer Clown' due to him often dressing up as a clown at local events, Gacy operated during the '70s in and around Chicago, and brutally tortured and murdered at least 33 men during this time. Just as we see in the trailer, the killer would hide his victims’ bodies in the crawl space of his home and elsewhere on his property, which resulted in police making a grisly discovery upon his arrest.

This is not the first time that Gacy’s crimes have been explored on screen, as although we never see the killer during the show, Netflix’s hit series Mindhunter references the Killer Clown’s crimes. In fact, it was once rumoured that Netflix’s Monster anthology series was supposed to tackle the Gacy case after season 1 looked at Jeffrey Dahmer, and season 2 was based on the Menendez brothers. However, Ryan Murphy's Monster season 3 is set to focus on the life of Ed Gein, starring Charlie Hunnam as the killer.

However, unlike the Monster series, it looks like Devil in Disguise won’t rehash Gacy’s sadistic killings so much, but will rather focus on the fallout of the crimes. According to Peacock, the show will look at how the discovery of the 30 plus bodies affected the community, and how Gacy was able to get away with it for so long.

The official synopsis reads, "Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy peels back the twisted layers of Gacy’s life while weaving in heartrending stories of his victims; exploring the grief, guilt, and trauma of their families and friends; and exposing the systemic failures, missed opportunities, and societal prejudices that fuelled his reign of terror."

Netflix has canceled crime drama The Waterfront after just one season, even though it hit the top 10 on the weekly charts, per Deadline.

The show hails from Scream creator Kevin Williamson, and it follows the Buckley family, who rule over their town of Havenport, North Carolina. But, to save their fishing empire, they're forced to turn to crime.

The Waterfront hit Netflix on June 19 and spent five weeks in the global top 10, including three weeks at number one, and it drew 11.6 million views in its first full week. It wasn't enough for the streamer, however.

Netflix has something of a reputation for axing shows, with recent high-profile cancelations including The Sandman spin-off Dead Boy Detectives and the Jeff Goldblum-starring Kaos.

"A big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront. While I'm sad the Buckleys won't be back for a season 2, I'm celebrating the joy that was season 1," Williamson wrote on Instagram (via Deadline).

"I had the pleasure of working with a dream cast and crew. My heart is full of gratitude for all the people who brought their talents to the show both in NC and LA," he continued. Elsewhere in Netflix news, KPop Demon Hunters has shot into the all-time top 10, currently sitting in second place – and it's on track to surpass Red Notice as the streamer's biggest film very soon. It also claimed the top spot at the weekend US box office thanks to its sing-along screenings.

After playing a creepy serial killer in last year's hit horror movie Longlegs, Nicolas Cage is switching sides as the star is reportedly in talks to star in True Detective season 5.

Cage is in talks to head the upcoming fifth season of HBO's hit crime anthology series and take on the role of New York detective Henry Logan, as reported by Deadline. Apparently, the star has been in discussions to play the part for quite some time, but the deal has yet to close.

Fans are certainly eager for Cage to take on the role, as one expressed their excitement on Reddit, "Now we're fucking talking!" Another added, "Nicolas Cage has been on an incredible streak lately, and I'm all for it!" However, others are wondering whether Cage will be able to bring a serious tone to the role. "Serious, toned-down Nic Cage could absolutely work. Batshit off the walls Nic Cage, not so much," pointed out one user.

But, we cannot forget that we have seen Cage pull off a serious detective-type role before in the 2013 movie The Frozen Ground, where he played state trooper Jack Halcombe opposite John Cusack’s deranged serial killer.

Season 5 welcomes back True Detective season 4’s Issa Lopez, who will act as writer-showrunner. Lopez won over fans last season with a female-led installment starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as officers investigating a grisly conspiracy way up in Alaska. However, it already sounds a though season 5 will have a completely different vibe altogether, as season 5 is set in Jamaica Bay, New York.

Deadline reports that Foster also took a while to close on True Detective season 4. However, Cage had better make his miniseries fast, as filming on season 5 is slated to begin in 2026, ready for a 2027 premiere on HBO and HBO Max.

Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby has a new show headed to HBO, this time focusing on Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent leading a task force to hunt down the leader of a biker gang played by Tom Pelphrey. Along with the drug-fueled violence and plenty of guns, the first trailer for the show, titled Task, offers up a backdrop of sentimental emotional turmoil.

Here's the trailer, set to Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here,' a track that sets a very particular mood for Task:

Inglesby's previous show, Mare of Easttown, also focused on an emotionally embattled law enforcement office in Kate Winslet's Mare Sheehan, who often pushes the boundaries of both her relationships and her job as she navigates a case that hits close to home.

Task flips the focus to Ruffalo's FBI agent, who seems reluctant to take on the job of leading a new task force to investigate a series of home invasions in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Reeling from personal tragedy, Ruffalo finds himself in a cat-and-mouse game with the leader of a violent biker gang who leads a double life as a family man.

The vibe of the first trailer seems to indicate a relationship between the two main characters as something like Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro's all-time-great performances in Heat, with Ruffalo's FBI agent and Pelphrey's biker developing a dynamic of their own through the course of Ruffalo hunting him down.

If you enjoyed binge-watching Netflix's latest crime series Untamed, we have great news for you – the show has been renewed for season 2, with Eric Bana returning as National Parks Service special agent Kyle Turner.

Although it was originally announced as a limited series, Untamed's success with viewers and critics has led the streaming service to announce an unexpected early renewal. Along with an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has been the most-watched show on Netflix since its release on July 17 in the US, and in dozens of other countries around the world.

"I am absolutely thrilled that we get the chance to bring another season of Untamed to life," Bana said in a statement (via Variety).

"The response to season 1 has been a testament to the incredible effort by our crew to deliver something truly unique. I can't wait to take Kyle on his next journey. Massive thanks to Netflix, John Wells Productions, Warner Bros. Television and our fans," he added.

The mystery thriller set in Yosemite National Park also stars Jurassic Park icon Sam Neill, Rosemarie DeWitt, Lily Santiago, Wilson Bethel, Raoul Max Trujillo, William Smillie, Joe Holt, and Josh Randall.

The plot follows Kyle Turner, a special agent for the Yosemite National Park Service's Investigative Services Branch (ISB), who investigates human crimes committed in the wilderness. When a woman's body is found at the bottom of a steep drop, Turner is convinced that it's a murder, despite many of his colleagues ruling it out as an accident.

Another recent Netflix show, Ransom Canyon, also got a season 2 renewal last month, so it looks like the streamer is giving its most promising titles some room to breathe and grow. Even if they're not breaking records like Squid Game or potentially the upcoming Wednesday season 2, smaller shows like these keep audiences hooked on Netflix.

Star Wars director J.J. Abrams' new crime thriller series Duster has been cancelled at HBO Max after its first season.

The news comes not even two months after showrunners Abrams and LaToya Morgan’s retro action-comedy series premiered on HBO Max. In a statement, the streamer said, "While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a second season of Duster, we are so grateful to have had the chance to work with the amazingly talented co-creators," adding, "We are tremendously proud of this series."

Duster’s cancellation comes as a shock, as the show was well-received when it hit HBO Max on May 15. The season was met with rave reviews and stands at an impressive 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it is important to note that Duster did not draw a large audience, and failed to place on viewing charts.

Set in the '70s Southwest US, Duster "explores the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate that goes from dangerous to wildly, stupidly dangerous when a tenacious young agent comes into town hellbent on taking his crime family down," as per the official synopsis.

The show stars Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Colony actor Josh Holloway. In fact, the show acted as a sort of reunion between Abrams and Holloway, as the actor notably played a lead role in the hit ‘00s sci-fi show Lost, co-created by Abrams.

The cancellation must be especially hard for Holloway, as the actor had previously taken a break from the industry due to not being able to find work. Before Duster hit streaming, the star told The Hollywood Reporter how he "had a hard seven years," adding, "nothing was coming through… I started telling my agents, ‘Just bring me work, I need to get out of the house, it’s ridiculous.'"

When Holloway got the call from Abrams about Duster, he was over the moon. "I couldn’t even believe what I was hearing," the star told THR. "That was right before the pandemic, and then HBO was sold twice. But we kept making it through everything. [We wondered] ‘Are they going to cancel us?’ No, no. We kept chugging along."

Looking back on Holloway's past interview only makes the news more heartbreaking. Aside from HBO Max’s statement, the real reason for the show not moving forward is unknown.

BBC's beloved Sherlock series last aired in 2017, but recent rumors have suggested there's potential for a revival. However, the series creator Mark Gatiss says there's no truth to a revival, telling Collider "What would be the point?" while emphasizing his commitment to his current series Bookish.

"No. We had our go, and we struck gold with Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman]. I mean, there’s no…what would be the point? You'd just be doing it again," Gatiss states. "And to be frank, you know, I'm 60 next year. It's incredible. And how many more things can one do? I'm committed to doing this, and I'm very interested in doing new stuff, and Bookish is what I want to do. So I think it's great to, as I said yesterday, it's great to tip your hat to what a wonderful thing it was, but also it's lovely to move forward."

This conflicts somewhat with statements made late last year by the show's producer Sue Vertue, who said "We love that show and there is a future for it," while clarifying that a revival would depend on bringing the cast and crew back together.

The series made an international star of Sherlock Holmes actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who went on to win the role of Doctor Strange in the MCU, while also solidifying the fan-favorite reputation of Dr. John Watson actor Martin Freeman, who also joined the MCU as SHIELD agent Everett Ross.

Sherlock ran for four seasons and a Christmas special, bringing some of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic Sherlock Holmes tales into the modern era with new twists on many of the old mysteries.

The show's popularity reached its fever pitch with the end of season two which concluded with the apparent death of Sherlock Holmes, followed by clues that he had faked his death. This led to months of fan speculation and intense analysis of the scene trying to figure out how Holmes may have survived, until the secret was revealed with the premiere of season 3.

First, there was John Watson. Penned by Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes’ medic pal has come to be the epitome of the ordinary, humble sidekick to a brilliant detective.

The sleuth and doctor’s imbalanced partnership has returned, not just in Doyle’s adaptations, from Sherlock to the gender-flipped Elementary, but also in crime dramas with no immediate link to the detective saga. This formula works like a charm, but risks getting repetitive, drowning in a sea of delightful procedurals.

This year, Netflix's Dept. Q and season 2 of Rian Johnson's Poker Face have moved away from the John Watson archetype to spotlight a different side to the detective's assistant, allowing the “second” in command to become an integral part of the storyline, and even steal the show.

Based on a Danish novel series, Netflix’s Edinburgh-set hit Dept. Q follows antisocial DCI Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) as he leads an unconventional task force investigating cold cases. Joining him are DC Rose Dickson (Leah Byrne), an officer who’s off active duty after a breakdown, and Akram Salim (Alexej Manvelov), a civilian employee and Syrian refugee determined to land a detective job.

A personable family man, Akram conceals a dark, not entirely lawful, past and counterbalances Morck’s outbursts with politeness and aplomb. Alternating between good cop and bad cop, the newcomer isn’t afraid to meet his hot-tempered boss in straightforward conversation, calmly but firmly demanding the respect he’s owed.

As the series unfolds, Morck’s irksome schtick makes you wonder if the problematic, anger-prone cop TV stereotype should be retired. The DCI wallows in his short-fused attitude, rebuffing the department-mandated therapy after being shot and relying on violence and threats.

Akram similarly resorts to rough methods at times — if crushing someone’s windpipe could be brushed off as such — but is in control of his emotions, as he tells Morck. This makes all the difference, confirming that Akram has not only the instincts of a good detective but at least a degree of restraint that’s required for the job.

Support act

Much like Akram, Poker Face’s human lie detector Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) isn’t formally a detective. Rian Johnson’s star-studded Columbo-style murder mystery takes Charlie from town to town in her beloved 1969 Plymouth Barracuda, sketching a picturesque portrait of Americana as she’s on the run from the mob.

After her best friend’s murder sets season 1 in motion, Charlie’s drifter lifestyle makes it difficult for her to establish meaningful bonds. A people person, the protagonist is lonelier than ever in season 2, but things take a turn when she settles down in NYC. Attempting to drown her “bullshit alarm” in a metropolis may sound counterintuitive, but it leads to her meeting Alex (Patti Harrison).

Honest to a fault, Alex is a breath of fresh air for Charlie. The two form an unlikely, goofy friend duo that shines when working together, with Alex’s investigative skills standing out in episode 10, ‘The Big Pump’. With her “kid sister, golden retriever energy”, as Charlie puts it, Alex is the ‘sunshine’ to the protagonist’s occasional ‘grumpy’, with the show soaring in a two-hander trope borrowed from rom-coms.

While Poker Face may appear peppy, mostly due to Charlie’s insane likability, it never exactly feels cosy or comforting. The show’s underlying darkness suggests that whatever Poker Face has in store for its grand finale could disrupt the sense of security that season 2 has been lulling viewers into so far, setting up for an explosive continuation.

Painting the darker hues in pastel tones, more classic cozy crime shows have also been blurring the traditional separation of sidekick and sleuth. Ludwig’s titular antihero has been a sidekick his whole life. A reclusive puzzle-maker, John Taylor (David Mitchell) has made a comfortable den in the shadow of his extroverted twin James, a DCI for the Cambridge Police. When James disappears, the solitary John rises to the challenge of impersonating his brother, prompted by his impossibly optimistic sister-in-law Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin).

A sidekick to Lucy at home, the fake DCI also starts solving murders on the job thanks to his puzzle-setting abilities, proving an unexpected mentor to DI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola). None the wiser about the twin swap, Russell doesn’t just back John’s seemingly unorthodox methods, but also relies on his own lateral thinking to work the trickiest cases.

The chemistry between detective and sidekick is at the core of the South Wales-set series Death Valley. Ambitious, if socially awkward, DS Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth) and her consultant, retired actor John Chapel (Timothy Spall), take turns in the grumpy-sunshine dynamic. The protagonists’ spiky personalities hide deep grief and a good heart, with their delicious banter sealing their budding friendship and selling the show.

Here's the 'kicker

The synergy of the detective trio is also what makes Only Murders in the Building one of the most consistently compelling series on TV right now. With a fifth season underway, the starry show wouldn’t be the same without Oliver, Charles and Mabel’s Arconia neighbor, the pet-loving, sassy Howard Morris (Michael Cyril Creighton). Originally supposed to feature in just a couple of episodes, Creighton’s Howard has sneaked his way into the trio’s investigations one amazing knitwear at a time. Instrumental in uncovering the Westies’ mystery in season 4, Howard has been trying his hand at several artistic ventures and may graduate to an even meatier role in the upcoming chapter.

The list goes on, with more opposite detective pairs to be found in Netflix’s (recently cancelled) The Residence, starring Uzo Aduba as quirky investigator and avid birdwatcher Cordelia Cupp and Randall Park as by-the-book FBI agent Edwin Park.

Updating the key elements of mystery series, these are but a few examples of series that have been tweaking the lead investigator-sidekick relationship and ushered in more inclusive portrayals of crime-solving characters.

And it won’t stop here, with more shows on the way to feed the audience’s obsession with crime, fictional or otherwise. As A Man on the Inside and High Potential — remakes of a 2020 documentary and a French-Belgian series, respectively — have received a season 2 order, cozy crime aficionados will be spoiled for choice.

But one of the most anticipated detective comebacks remains that of Marvel’s very own PI, Jessica Jones. Krysten Ritter is officially back for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 next year, fuelling the hope of a reunion between Jessica and her bestie Trish Walker/Hellcat after Netflix’s Jessica Jones pitted them against each other.

Everyone needs a ride-or-die, even those with superhuman strength, and every sidekick deserves decent storylines that don’t play into tired tropes.

Idris Elba is known as one of the smoothest actors around, thanks to both the caliber of his performances and for the cool demeanor he brings to many of his roles - a reputation he built on the back of his beloved performance as Stringer Bell across three seasons of The Wire. As it turns out though, Elba has never watched his own breakthrough performance, telling Amy Poehler it would be "weird" if he did while guesting on her Good Hang podcast (via EW).

"If I'm really honest, I didn't watch The Wire," Elba says. "I didn't watch it. And I feel bad. It's not that I'm not a fan of it - I was there. I made a show that was, you know, so intense and so real, so important, even though we didn't realize it. I didn't realize the importance of the show while making it. I didn't participate in its celebration as a viewer, as a fan. And so I feel a little bit outside of the club."

Elba played erudite but cold-hearted gangster Stringer Bell in three seasons of The Wire, one of the leaders of the drug ring being surveilled in the police operation that gives the all-time-great show its name.

But - here's a spoiler that's officially old enough to drink in the US - Elba's character dies in the third season, in a brutally impactful scene made immortal by the actor's performance.

"It's more that I feel the presence of it all, my life since The Wire… In terms of its impact," Elba explains. "So to me, it was almost a bit like I was Stringer Bell. I'm not Stringer Bell, but I also feel like when Stringer Bell died, there was a part of me that died with that character. It's weird for me to go back and watch it."

It's not weird for me - I've rewatched The Wire multiple times, and Elba's instantly memorable performance and calmly commanding screen presence make Stringer Bell one of the show's best characters, and one of the best villains in television history.

The emotional rollercoaster that is being a Mindhunter fan looks to be heading for the loop-de-loop, thanks to star Holt McCallany reigniting our hopes of a continuation once again. In a new interview, the actor claimed we could see the show wrapped up for good in a feature-length title – and not just the one, either...

"So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance," the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning actor told ScreenRant recently, while promoting his new drama The Waterfront. "I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts."

It's been six years since the Netflix crime series dropped its second – and supposedly last – chapter, which saw FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (McCallany) continue their Behavioral Science Unit work with psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv). It focused more specifically on the disappearances and murders of several young African American children across Atlanta from 1979 and 1981. David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) and Charles Manson were some of the infamous serial killers Holden and Bill interviewed throughout the season.

In that time, David Fincher, who directed 7 episodes across seasons 1 and 2, confirmed that the streamer had pulled the plug on any future installments. "I'm very proud of the first two seasons, but it's a particularly expensive series and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven't attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment," he candidly told French publication Le Journal du Dimanche.

"I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all," McCallany continued in his chat with ScreenRant. "I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align. The good news is that we're at Netflix with The Waterfront, and those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that's a big question mark."

Apple TV Plus's anthology crime series Presumed Innocent has lined up Superman star Rachel Brosnahan to take over from Jake Gyllenhaal in season 2. According to Deadline, the actor – who picked up an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her lead performance in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – will also executive produce the new chapter.

Given that it's based on Jo Murray's debut thriller novel Dissection of a Murder, we can assume, then, that Brosnahan will be playing out-of-her-depth lawyer Leila Reynolds, who's tasked with defending a man suspected of killing a respected, well-known judge. The jury is still out on who'll be playing client Jack Millman. The book isn't scheduled to publish until July 2026, so there's no chance for eager fans to find out how the case ends anytime soon.

Created by David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams, Presumed Innocent season 1 took inspiration from Scott Turow's 1987 novel of the same name, which sees high-profile Chicago-based prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhaal) accused of murdering a female colleague he was having an affair with. Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle, Renate Reinsve, and Peter Sarsgaard. In 1990, Star Wars' Harrison Ford played Rusty in Alan J. Pakula's feature-length adaptation.

Before she'll be hitting up court rooms, though, Brosnahan will be seen in James Gunn's Superman, opposite David Corenswet as the titular hero. While we don't know plot specifics, we know it'll see the Man of Steel reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his Clark Kent persona, and face off against The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).

New crime thriller series The Survivors is climbing the Netflix charts, but it's slipped under the radar. Arriving on the streamer with seemingly little fanfare, the show doesn't even have a Rotten Tomatoes score yet from either audience or critics.

Since the show was released this past Friday (June 6), however, it's hit the top 10 worldwide and reached number four in the US, number three in the UK, number two in Australia and Ireland, and it's even hit the number one spot in Argentina and Venezuela (per FlixPatrol).

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star Charlie Vickers plays Kieran, who returns to his hometown in Tasmania 15 years after the natural disaster that killed three people in his life. As if dealing with his past wasn't difficult enough, the local community is thrown into turmoil again when a young woman is murdered, and past secrets threaten to be thrown into focus again.

The six-part miniseries is based on the novel of the same name by Jane Harper. Her debut novel was adapted into the 2021 movie The Dry, starring Eric Bana and Genevieve O'Reilly, and a sequel based on her follow-up novel followed in 2024.

Tony Ayres is on board as showrunner, and the cast also includes Shannon Berry, Yerin Ha, Robyn Malcolm, Damien Garvey, Catherine McClements, and Don Hany.

Dexter Morgan is starting over in a new city in the first trailer for Dexter: Resurrection, a revival of the beloved crime series that sees Michael C. Hall reprising his beloved character.

The new trailer, which you can see above, offers a first look at the show's star-studded cast, which includes Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris, Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, Jessica Jones actress Krysten Ritter and Late Night With the Devil's David Dastmalchian. Hall is in very good company, as the titular serial killer finds a new home in New York.

As we can see in the footage, the new series sees Hall's charismatic serial killer resurrecting (hence the title) just weeks after taking a bullet to the chest at the hands of his son Harrison (played by Jack Alcott). The plot will follow his journey to New York City, where he is determined to find his son and make things right after their almost deadly encounter.

"But closure won't come easy,” reads the official synopsis. "When Miami Metro's Angel Batista (David Zayas) arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness in the city that never sleeps, they soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined – and that the only way out is together."

The trailer reveals the first meeting between Dexter and the wealthy Leon Prater (played by Dinklage), who has a particular interest in "collecting" serial killers. "I pride myself in finding the best of the best in every field," he tells Dexter, teasing even more killers to join their group.

The cast also features Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, C.S. Lee, Luna Lauren Velez, Desmond Harrington and Julie Benz, with James Remar returning as Dexter's father.

The new show is a sequel to the original Dexter series, which ran from 2006 to 2013, and 2021's miniseries Dexter: New Blood. Hall recently narrated season 1 of the prequel Dexter: Original Sin.

The Sopranos star Steve Schirripa has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection, Variety reports.

He's been cast in a recurring role as Vinny, a character described as a "greedy slumlord" by the publication.

Schirripa is best known for playing Bobby Baccalieri, also known as Bobby Bacala, in The Sopranos between 2000 and 2007. He worked for Junior Soprano and rose up through the ranks of the organized crime family after being introduced in season 2.

Since then, he's starred in The Secret Life of the American Teenager alongside Shailene Woodley and had a recurring role in the CBS procedural Blue Bloods from 2015 to 2024.

Resurrection follows on from 2021's sequel series Dexter: New Blood and sees Michael C. Hall reprise his role as Dexter Morgan, a forensic analyst who lives a double life as a vigilante serial killer. Other returning cast members include John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell, AKA the Trinity Killer, David Zayas as Angel Batista, Jack Alcott as Dexter's son Harrison, and James Remar as his father Harry. Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, and David Dastmalchian have also been cast in the series.

The original Dexter series ran for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013. As well as New Blood and Resurrection, a prequel series, Original Sin, aired in 2024. Another prequel show centered around the Trinity Killer is also in the works.

John Lithgow has teased the return of his Dexter character, known as the Trinity Killer, in new sequel series Dexter: Resurrection.

"I just went back to do a day," Lithgow told Variety. "They’re rebooting the entire Michael C. Hall version of Dexter. And it turns out he didn’t die after all. I come back sort of as a phantom, as he gradually comes to life on a hospital bed."

Lithgow's character Arthur Mitchell was the main villain of Dexter season 4, which aired in 2009. A church deacon, high school teacher, and unassuming family man by day, Arthur also moonlights as a serial killer. He's dubbed the Trinity Killer because of a recurring pattern of three killings, which are based on traumatic events during his childhood.

Season 4 culminated with Arthur discovering Dexter's real identity and killing his wife, Rita. Dexter kills Arthur with a hammer in the season finale. Lithgow also made a cameo appearance in an episode of 2021's Dexter: New Blood, in a flashback scene that showed how he killed Rita.

Resurrection follows on from New Blood. Hall will reprise his role as forensic analyst-cum-vigilante serial killer Dexter Morgan, alongside David Zayas as Miami cop Angel Batista, Jack Alcott as Dexter's son Harrison, and James Remar as his father Harry. Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, Krysten Ritter, and Neil Patrick Harris will also star.

Hulu's new Prison Break reboot pilot has added three new cast members: Sucker Punch's Emily Browning, Euphoria's Lukas Gage, and Landman's Drake Rodger have been cast as series regulars.

Elgin James, co-creator of Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans M.C., is on board as showrunner for the project, which went into development in late 2023 before a pilot was ordered in December 2024.

The series will reportedly be set in the same universe as the original show, but none of its characters are expected to cross over. Not much is known about the plot so far, but Deadline shared some official descriptions of the three newly cast characters, which gives us some idea of what to expect.

Browning will play Cassidy Collins, "an ex-soldier turned corrections officer who takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America," Gage is Jackson, "a politician from a well-to-do background in his first congressional campaign," and Rodger's character is Tommy, "an inmate at one of the deadliest prisons in America, incarcerated 10 years ago".

The original Prison Break aired for four seasons on Fox between 2005 and 2008. The show followed two brothers, Lincoln (Dominic Purcell), who has been sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit, and Michael (Wentworth Miller), who devises an elaborate plan to break Lincoln out of prison and clear his name. A TV movie, The Final Break, followed in 2009, and a fifth season premiered in 2017.

Just over ten years on from its debut, Matthew McConaughey has shared his thoughts on True Detective, and why he thinks his season is still the best. The actor was recently asked if he watched the latest season of the show – True Detective: North Country – which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

"I watched, I saw it. Yeah, there’s a lot about it that I appreciated," McConaughey told Variety about the 2014 show. "My favorite season – and I feel like I can say this objectively – is Season 1."

The actor added: "I happen to be in that one, so I thought that was incredible, incredible television and a great series. I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me. And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning. Even though I made it, I sort of forgot what was going to happen next. It was one of the great events in TV."

The original series starred McConaughey as Detective Rustin "Rust" Cohle alongside Woody Harrelson as Detective Martin "Marty" Hart. The series was told across two time periods: when the pair are young detectives brought in to investigate the death of Dora Lange in 1995 and then 17 years later when links to a series of other missing-person cases bring it into the spotlight.

It was widely acclaimed when it first aired and still holds an impressive 92% critics and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the highest of all seasons of the show, closely followed by True Detective season 4, which also hit over the 90% mark.

Two shows in the FBI franchise have been canceled at CBS – and fans are furious. FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International will both end after their current seasons, joining the list of this year's canceled TV shows.

FBI: Most Wanted, which focuses on the FBI's Fugitive Task Force and catching criminals on the organization's most-wanted list, first aired in 2020 and ran for six reasons. FBI: International, meanwhile, follows the International Fly Team in Budapest. It debuted in 2021 and ran for four seasons. Both shows are spin-offs of procedural series FBI, which has been airing since 2018 and was created by Law & Order's Dick Wolf.

"Hey @CBS big mistake cancelling #FBIMostWanted and #FBIInternational," tweeted one fan. "Someone else should pick them up!"

"Why tf is #FBIInternational being canceled?" asked another. "At this point, this cancelation spree makes no sense cause this show has been good from episode 1! The math ain't mathing. Canceling two shows just to greenlight a show that hasn't even has its backdoor pilot aired yet is wild."

"@CBS continues to just make the absolute worst decisions," wrote someone else. "#FBIInternational was really hitting its stride this season. Y’all suck. You really do. After losing NCIS Hawaii last season. Why do y’all hate good programming?"

Both shows were broadcast on CBS on Tuesday nights, and fans are hoping streaming service Paramount Plus might save them. "Y’all so they like really canceled the show???? This is a joke right??" one viewer asked. Can’t the show just be moved to Paramount+?"

Despite these cancelations, a brand new spin-off in the franchise is still in the works. FBI: CIA was announced in January and, per the official synopsis, will follow "a dedicated, strait-laced FBI agent and a street-smart CIA agent. They're "part of a new, clandestine taskforce charged with solving and preventing domestic terrorism in and around New York City."

Neil Patrick Harris has been cast in upcoming spin-off series Dexter: Resurrection – and fans of the franchise can hardly believe the line-up of actors the revival is assembling.

In the show, which will see Michael C. Hall reprise his role as the titular blood spatter analyst-turned-murderous vigilante, Harris is set to share the screen with Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage (as Leon), Jessica Jones' Krysten Ritter (as Mia), and Uma Thurman (as Charley). According to Showtime, the majority of the episodes will take place 15 years after the events of the original and will be narrated by Dexter Morgan following a near-death experience.

It'll mark the third off-shoot of the Miami-set serial killer thriller, which ran from 2006 to 2013, after Dexter: New Blood and prequel Dexter: Original Sin.

"This casting is so crazy. Just as you think you have seen it all, there is more surprise casting to this series. I really can't wait to see this series," reacted one fan on Twitter, as another joked: "What is the damn budget of this show?"

"Resurrection is stacked," said one more, as a fourth wrote: "Damn this season is gonna be amazing."

Details on who Harris's character, named Lowell, remains under wraps, which some have taken to mean that he could be an antagonist to Hall's anti-hero. "Ok he's the killer and we know it, already," tweeted a fan.

Harris, who's perhaps best known for his roles in Gone Girl and How I Met Your Mother, most recently played iconic villain The Toymaker in Doctor Who episode 'The Giggle' opposite David Tennant's Time-Lord, so he's certainly no stranger to embracing his dark side.

A Nordic murder mystery is currently at the top of Netflix's TV chart – though you've probably never even heard of it.

According to Flix Patrol, The Åre Murders is Netflix's most-watched show worldwide today (February 11). The show is set in Sweden and follows two detectives investigating the murder of a teenage girl, and it's based on the novels of the same name by Viveca Sten. Carla Sehn and Kardo Razzazi star, and Joakim Eliasson and Alain Darborg direct.

The series seems to be flying under the radar entirely, with only two critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and fewer than 50 audience ratings. This could be Netflix's next major hidden gem, then.

The rest of the top 10 is made up of Cassandra, The Night Agent, Apple Cider Vinegar, Prison Cell 211, Wrong Side of the Tracks, The Recruit, Sakamoto Days, Sweet Magnolias, and Ghosts.

"I don't love acting, honestly, I'm not really psyched about this business, but season 3 I'm very excited about," The Night Agent star Gabriel Basso told us recently of the upcoming third season of the hit show. "I think the crew down in Istanbul were amazing. The stuff we were able to get on camera that was unplanned was nuts. I do some stunts in there that I can't believe Netflix signed off on."

2025 is shaping up to be a huge year for Netflix, with the likes of Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein (which recently screened a trailer behind closed doors), Knives Out 3, and a new Ben Affleck and Matt Damon project arriving on the movie side of things, with TV shows out this year including Squid Game season 3, Wednesday season 2, and Stranger Things season 5.

Although BBC drama Sherlock first hit screens over 15 years ago, fans are still hoping that Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Holmes one day, but the star says it would take a lot for him to return to Baker Street.

"A lot of money," Cumberbatch said jokingly in an interview with Variety. "It would take it to be better than it ever was. You leave them or yourselves wanting more. There’s always that itch to scratch, but I think it would have to be the superlative version of what we’ve already achieved."

Airing in 2010, Sherlock starred Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as the crime-solving duo Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, who we all know and love from British author Arthur Conan Doyle's famous novels. Just like in the 18th-century books, the show follows eccentric and unpredictable Holmes alongside his straight-edged unlikely buddy as they take on the strangest cases from mysterious suicides to bank robberies.

Despite Sherlock Holmes being adpated many times before, including the popular 2009 movie starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, the BBC series switches things up by setting Sherlock in modern-day London rather than the Victorian era. The series ran until 2017 and grew quite the fan base, known as 'Sherlockians' or 'Holmesians'. So much so that fans to this day are calling out for a revival.

However, Cumberbatch never intended to play the detective for long. When the show took off, he attended an event and let fans know he was looking to branch out. "I went, 'Guys, I know you really like Sherlock, but if you’re with me, I’m not going to always do the same thing,'" he recalls in his Variety interview. "'I’m not going to always be the Benedict that you expect. You might not like some of the stuff I do… But I want to stretch myself and surprise myself and surprise you.'"

For now, Sherlock fans will have to settle to see Cumberbatch in upcoming Marvel movie Avengers: Secret Wars, as the star recently let slip of his return to the MCU as Doctor Strange. The movie is set to hit theatres on May 7, 2027.

Published in 1971, Frederick Forsyth's best-selling political thriller The Day of the Jackal centers on a nameless assassin who's tasked with killing French president Charles De Gaulle by a far-right terrorist organization. The film adaptation, which was released in 1973, follows the same story but Sky's new take on the source material modernizes the plot, bringing it into the 21st Century and giving 'The Jackal' an entirely different target.

That's not the only way in which it differs from the novel, however. As Eddie Redmayne is quick to point out when GamesRadar+ chats with him about the show, his hitman is much more of a showman than in previous iterations: Edward Fox played him in the '70s, while Bruce Willis took a stab at him in The Jackal (1997). 

There's also the matter of it being a 10-part series rather than a movie. As we spend more time with 'The Jackal', who goes by 'Charles' in the show, we get to know him more than existing screen versions of the story have, see the life he's set up for himself with his wife Nuria (Úrsula Corberó) in Spain, which lends itself to him being less of a straight-up antagonist.

"One of the things I think is interesting is that in the book and in the original movie, that sense of right and wrong, of good and bad, felt much more concrete," Redmayne tells us. "It felt to me that The Jackal was the baddie, but he was a charismatic baddie and De Gaulle was the goodie. 

"What [writer/producer] Ronan Bennett's done is updated it to a world of ambiguities. Over 10 hours, I feel like virtually all of the protagonists in this piece are doing extraordinary things but also deeply morally dubious things. I like that Ronan's world has gone from the binary to this kind of blurry, more of a spectrum [approach]."

That said, Forsyth's book is around 350-380 pages in most editions, which would mean the average reader would likely spend longer than 10 hours with these characters. "I thought Lebel [the French detective after the titular marksman] was the hero. Jackal was the villain," the author previously told The Telegraph. "I was very surprised when readers said they loved him. He was the ruddy killer. I had expected women to hate him. But no, he had a lot of female admirers."

Lebel doesn't feature in the reboot, instead, Marvel star Lashana Lynch plays the one hot on Charles' heels: Bianca, a firearms expert working for the MI6. It was The Jackal's previous job – and the bespoke gun she's convinced he used to do it – that caught her attention. Will she manage to catch up to him before he strikes again?

If you're a thriller fan, then you'll certainly be familiar with cat-and-mouse narratives. The Day of the Jackal, the new take on Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel, is the latest of its kind, as it sees Lashana Lynch's British intelligence officer try to track down Eddie Redmayne's elusive contract killer. 

Think Killing Eve meets The Night Manager. Naturally then, its characters spend the majority of the 10-part series separated; something that Lynch believes benefitted the show immensely. 

"There are these real strange similarities between [Bianca and Charles] that kind of help the audience along; you recognize things that you shouldn't in a person you want to root for and how all that can flip so quickly," the Marvel star tells GamesRadar+, when we asked how she and Redmayne ensured they matched each other's vibes while filming apart. "Our first block director, Brian Kirk, set the tone. He taught me personally, and our cinematographer Chris Ross, how we could aesthetically let the audience into each character's minds without being too invasive and giving them too much, too early."

Adapted by Ronan Bennett (Top Boy, Public Enemies), The Day of the Jackal follows Redmayne's high-stakes hitman Charles – or at least that's what he says his name is – as he's tasked with killing a controversial political figure. (In the book, 'The Jackal' takes aim at former French president Charles De Gaulle, who died in 1970. In the show, his target is strictly fictitious).

Problem is, though, is that Charles' previous job has caught the attention of MI6 and, more specifically, tenacious firearms expert Bianca (Lynch), who sets out to catch him before he can strike again. Also starring Kate Dickie, Eleanor Matsuura, Charles Dance, and Úrsula Corberó, the gorgeously-shot show hops between Germany, France, Spain, and England, as Bianca relentlessly pursues 'Charles' through Europe.

"From a producer perspective, I was actually quite happy in the end, even though I really wanted to work with Eddie closely, that there were these two separate experiences, because each director that came in saw the similarities and how all the characters around them responded to them in different ways made their coming together make sense," says Lynch. "I thought [their separation] would be a disservice at the beginning but actually, I think it made for a better aligning story."

Eddie Redmayne has played everything from a wizard, a painter and theoretical physicist to a serial killer. Now, new thriller series The Day of the Jackal is set to see the actor play an assassin for the very first time – and, well, he couldn't have had a better time portraying the chameleonic, disguise-donning character. 

"I loved it," he tells GamesRadar+. "It was a playground for me. One of the things I think is kind of intriguing about him as a character is [that] he starts off so enigmatic, but all these different protagonists that he meets along the way mirror or expose different qualities in him. 

"But the fact that you've got to not only play him and try and find a through-line through him, but to play his characters as well was an actor's dream. All of that stuff you think of when you're a kid and you want to be an actor – like makeup, prosthetics, different costumes, languages, accents – was just so joyful."

There are two big problems, though. One is that his wife Nuria (Money Heist's Úrsula Corberó) has grown suspicious of all the time he spends away from home, and has started looking into what he really does. The other? Charles' last successful job – which saw him fatally shoot someone from over two miles away – has caught the attention of Bianca (Lashana Lynch), a tenacious gun expert working for MI6. With the walls closing in on him in every direction, will Charles complete his 100 million-dollar mission?

"I think one of the things that differentiates him from some of the other, you know, famous spies is his 'peacockiness'," Redmayne explains, as he praises the show's "meticulous" costume department. "He's a sort of a flâneur, dandy assassin, and, and it was really important for Natalie Humphries, our brilliant costume designer, that each time you see him he's wearing something different, that he's always changing. That was fun to lean into."

While Lynch has played a spy before, in No Time to Die, Daniel Craig's last outing as James Bond, she found herself having to do a lot of homework prior to filming. 

"The whole first week, I just called it MI6 week. It was monologue after monologue; there was so much detail! It was a lot to get my head around, but it also really set me up for the kind of Bianca that I needed to portray," the Marvel star recalls. "I had to learn [all of that gun jargon] on the job. Her expertise and approach is a little frantic and annoying and strange, and a little warped too. But she's also very cocky, so I had to force myself to lean into some kind of cockiness, even though I felt like I didn't know what I was talking about any of the time."

Apple TV Plus' hit legal drama Presumed Innocent will take on brand new source material for season 2 as the show moves on with a cast of new characters, Deadline reports.

The first season, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as prosecutor and murder suspect Rusty Sabich, was based on the novel of the same name by Scott Turow. Season 2, however, will be based on Dissection of a Murder, a currently unpublished novel by Jo Murray that's set to hit shelves in 2026. The book follows Leila Reynolds, a defense lawyer feeling way out of her depth on her murder case – made more complicated by the fact that her husband happens to be the prosecutor. No casting information has been revealed yet. 

Alongside Gyllenhaal, season 1's cast also included Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Renate Reinsve, and Peter Sarsgaard. According to the streamer, the show was the most-viewed drama of all time on Apple TV Plus. Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley is the showrunner, and Gyllenhaal and JJ Abrams are among the series' executive producers.

In a similar vein to other limited-turned-anthology series like The White Lotus, there were originally plans for one or two characters from season 1 to appear in season 2, but Deadline reports that it's unclear whether this will go ahead with the new source material.

Tom Hollander, Olivia Williams, and Laurie Metcalf have joined the cast of Netflix's Monster, ahead of the controversial crime drama's third season. The trio will share the screen with Charlie Hunnam, whose involvement was announced in September. 

While we already know the next chapter of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's show will center on real-life killer Ed Gein, who gained notoriety in the late 1950s after he was caught digging up bodies from local graveyards and confessed to murdering two women, the new additions shed more light on which direction it might take...

As confirmed by the streamer, Hollander, who's perhaps best known for The Night Manager, The White Lotus and his appearances in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, will play Alfred Hitchcock. Gein was reportedly a major inspiration for author Robert Bloch, who wrote Psycho in 1959, and subsequently Hitchcock's interpretation of Norman Bates in his adaptation a year later. Could this mean the series will concentrate more on Gein's influence in American pop culture, rather than his crimes and capture?

Williams (Dune: Prophecy) is set to bring Hitchcock' wife Alma to life, while Metcalf (Scream 2) has signed on as Gein's religious mother Augusta Wilhelmine Gein.

Released on September 19, Monster's previous installment chronicles the real-life case of brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of fatally shooting their parents in Beverly Hills in 1989.  During their trial, the prosecution argued that they were seeking to inherit their family's fortune, while the siblings claimed – as they still do to this day – that they killed their parents in self-defense, following years of emotional and sexual abuse. They were subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

Starring Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Cooper Koch, Chloë Sevigny, and Javier Bardem, the series was met with mixed reviews, many of which criticized the way it fictionalizes certain events for shock value, the inclusion of the parents' POV, and its implication that the Menendez brothers were incestuous. 

"It is sad for me to know that Netflix's dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime have taken the painful truths several steps backward – back through time to an era when the prosecution built a narrative on a belief system that males were not sexually abused, and that males experienced rape trauma differently than women," Lyle Menendez said in a statement, via his wife Tammi's social media account, shortly after the show dropped.

"Those awful lies have been disrupted and exposed by countless brave victims over the last two decades who have broken through their personal shame and bravely spoken out."
