Supergirl

Supergirl didn't exactly soar at the box office; in fact, it made less than notorious flops Joker 2 and Morbius. But don't let that put you off, as Supergirl has much to recommend, not least a spirited performance from Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El.

The second movie in James Gunn's DCU Chapter One, Supergirl takes place ahead of Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, and it's essential viewing ahead of next summer's DC offering. Plus, who can pass up more time with good boy Krypto?

The Paper season 2

The second season of this surprisingly charming spin-off of The Office (US) is out to binge in full, with all 10 episodes now streaming. Set in the newsroom of a local newspaper in terminal decline, it mirrors much of what made The Office great: goofy characters, sharp gags and a classic will-they-won't-they romance.

We'd be lying if we said this comes close to The Office, despite the involvement of US Office creator Greg Daniels, but it's an enjoyable enough facsimile, and Domhnall Gleeson is a terrific comedic centerpiece as editor Ned Sampson. Plus, Office supporting character Oscar Martinez appears in the show, so you never know who might make the trip over from Scranton one day.

This riveting thriller is Apple TV's first Australian original. Set in a fictional port town, it stars Patrick Brammall (of Colin From Accounts fame, see below) as former chief of police Ian Ridely, who turned to operating emergency phone lines after the disappearance of his 3-year-old daughter 11 years prior. After her body is seemingly unearthed following a mudslide, Ian answers an emergency call from a young woman he believes to be his now-teenage daughter, setting him off on a quest to find the daughter he thought lost.

Based on a page-turner novel and directed by The Crown's Christian Schwochow, it's one of those shows where you'll lament the weekly wait between episodes. But the good news is, the first two dropped at the same time, with new episodes set to air weekly on Wednesdays.

Call My Agent! The Movie

It's been five years since comedy series Call My Agent! came to an end with the fourth and final season, and now the former ASK talent agency team are back for a sequel movie. Set in real time, half a decade after the closure of ASK, Andréa is now directing a movie. But when disaster strikes and the lead actor drops out, the former team reunites to save the project.

It's funny enough on its own merit, but one of the treats of Call My Agent! was seeing which famous French actors cameoed across the series (Sigourney Weaver even popped up). We won't spoil them here, but there are some big-name Hollywood cameos to watch out for in the movie.

Colin From Accounts season 3

The third and final season of this delightful Australian comedy show is now out in full, perfect for a weekend binge. Gordon (Patrick Brammall) and Ashley (Harriet Dyer) are the ideal mismatched couple, brought together by their injured dog, Colin From Accounts (the name will make sense when you watch it). But after seemingly breaking up for good following a failed proposal at the end of season 2, can their undeniable connection bring them back together?

Alongside the winning leads and a sky-high gag rate, Colin From Accounts is such a treat because Gordon and Ashley are a perfectly messy pairing. Brammell and Dyer are married in real life and, despite their characters being all wrong for each other in many ways, you can't help but hope it works out for them.

The first trailer for Silo season 4 has arrived, and the final season of the hit Apple TV Plus show is coming sooner than you'd think.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed above, we see one of the most important moments of the entire series: Juliette suddenly runs into a strange man, and demands that he reveal his identity. The man, who doesn't seem to remember much of anything, is none other than Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman), one of the most important figures in Silo 1. Season 3 introduced dual timelines, one before the world ended and one with modern society living in the silos, with Keene now in the present-day timeline after several extended stints in cryosleep.

The trailer also sees Paul Billings broadcast the truth to all the citizens of Silo 18: "We are not alone. There are other silos out there."

The hit sci-fi series is based on the trilogy of the same name by author Graham Yost, with each season adapting each book (Wool, Shift, and Dust). The final book, Dust, will be told over seasons 3 and 4.

Silo season 3 just aired its final episode, and we won't hit you with a whole mess of spoilers... but let's just say that season 4 is definitely going to be an explosive one.

As Silo season 3 comes to an end on Apple TV, one fan has spotted a major clue that may reveal how many silos are remaining.

"Look how few remaining silos there are!" said the fan on Twitter, posting a still from the show where just 7 silos are lit up on a diagram, making it seem like they are the only silos still active. "It looks like They've probably activated the Safeguard in all the non-lit-up silos," continued the fan. Check out the post below.

It looks like the silos that are lit up are 42, 31, 44, 1, 18, 19, and 14. "That’s 7 silos out of 50 that are lit up. Hopefully, that’s not the case that they’ve been safeguarded," replied one fan, and another added, "It's possible they lied about all the silos being ready."

In Silo lore, the network of silos actually consists of 51 stations, including silo 1, which is treated as the central control hub. However, in the show, it looks like there are only 50 in total. Nevertheless, as the show has progressed, we've learnt that multiple silos have been reset or safeguarded, with everyone inside killed following rebellions.

We already know that Silo 17 was destroyed due to a civil uprising breaking out inside the station. The population was wiped out by Silo 1 when they exited their Silo. This happened 35 years before the main events of the show, but a handful of people did manage to survive, as Juliette later meets Solo and other Silo 17 descendants in season 2. However, with over 300 years of events to cover, it's not exactly clear what could have happened to the others.

Others think that the diagram is actually showing silos that are under investigation, as the list does not include Silo 17. "I think it might be the other way around just because of them stressing so much about cross-contamination," replied one fan.

Silo season 3 has just wrapped on Apple TV, and sees Silo 18 survive their Safeguard (barely), with some major reveals about the nature of the Silo Project. Juliette is now hell-bent on directing that offensive system at Silo 1 in season 4, which will conclude the sci-fi series. Silo season 4 has wrapped filming and is targeting a summer 2027 release date.

Silo season 3 has come to an explosive end, featuring some huge revelations for both the upcoming fourth season and everything that has happened so far. Titled 'Troy', the final episode finally merges the shows two storylines, featuring a huge reveal about how they connect.

We won't get into too many spoiler-heavy details here (you can read our Silo season 3 ending explained for more on that), but the finale has already caused a lot of buzz from fans of the show. Taking to social media, people have been calling the conclusion everything "truly incredible" to a satisfying "pay-off".

"If you’ve been watching Silo for the last 3 years this finale is really such a payoff lol incredible way to tell a story," one wrote, while another added: "That Season 3 finale flipped the whole show upside down. Can’t wrap my head around why the Founder would establish this whole thing and then…#Silo is phenomenal. Might be my favorite sci-fi series of all time."

"This episode might have been one of the greatest tv episodes in history… I haven’t had this much exposition thrown at me ever before in a single episode," tweeted another. "My jaw is on the floor, not even a Severance ep has gagged me like this, my GOD."

Silo season 4 is on the way, and there's not long to wait. The Apple TV sci-fi hit is returning for its fourth and final season in just one year, when (we hope) all our questions will finally be answered.

After that mind-bending Silo season 3 ending, you're probably wondering what's next. We've unearthed the evidence and pieced together the clues to bring you everything there is to know about Silo season 4, including the confirmed release date, plot speculation, info on returning cast members, and when we might expect a trailer.

So, like the denizens of Silo 18, it's time to head below for all the need-to-know info about one of the most exciting new TV shows on the calendar. But beware: full Silo season 3 spoilers follow, so don't read until you're caught up.

Silo season 4 release date

Apple has officially confirmed that Silo season 4 will release on July 9, 2027, after previously indicating that the final season would drop Summer 2027.

In modern TV terms, where waits between seasons commonly last 2-3 years, that's a relatively quick turnaround. This is possible because seasons 3 and 4 were shot back-to-back. Filming on the fourth and final season wrapped on March 6, 2026. During the Silo panel at SDCC 2026, Apple put out a short teaser confirming the Silo season 4 release window. Check it out below.

Silo season 4 plot speculation

Note: this speculation doesn't contain book spoilers.

The Silo season 3 finale sets up a clear mission statement for the final season: Silo 18 is taking the fight to Silo 1. Given the two factions are literally siloed off from each other, and Silo 1's massive intelligence and technological advantage, it's hard to know what plan Juliette and co. could cook up to take down Silo 1. But having prevented a safeguard and with Camille now on their side, we wouldn't count Silo 18 out.

From the Silo season 4 trailer, we know we'll be getting further flashbacks as well. While the season 3 finale takes Troy (aka Daniel) up to the present day, we're none the wiser about what happened to several characters after they went into the silos, including Helen and Per Stenson. And we don't see Susan (aka. Charlotte) or Rosalind again following the 35-year time jump. The season 4 trailer confirms we'll be catching up with these characters in the next season.

Above all, we can expect answers. Showrunner Graham Yost has explicitly confirmed as much, telling Collider: "There are mysteries every season, and pretty much all the mysteries are answered by the end of Season 4. We wanted to make sure that we answered enough by the end of Season 3 that the audience didn't feel like they were being strung along."

Season 3 certainly answered some big questions. We now know that Silo 18 wasn't being monitored by an omniscient Algorithm, but the very human people in Silo 1, who have dedicated their lives (willingly or not) to enforcing the Directive in the belief it will ensure humanity's survival. We also know that the Silos were built by trillionaire Per Stenson, in cooperation with Senator Rosalind Thurman, due to their belief that a nanobot apocalypse was inevitable. And we know it was Victor who wrote The Pact.

Much still remains a mystery, however. Who detonated the nuclear device that drove humanity underground, and was it a ruse to accelerate the start of the Silo programme? Is the entire planet a nuclear wasteland, or just the area around the Silos? Is anyone on Earth alive other than those in Silos 18 and 1, and the remnants of Silo 17? And exactly how much time has passed since humanity descended into the Silos? We only know for sure that at least 42 years have passed, as this is the amount of time that Troy spends in cryo between operations during season 3, episode 10, but in all likelihood it's been far longer than that.

In other words, expect major secrets to finally be brought into the open in Silo season 4.

Silo season 4 cast

Some major figures met their end in Silo season 3, most notably: Bernard (Tim Robbins), who was sent out to clean in episode 9, and Victor (Matt Craven), who took his own life in the season finale. We don't yet know the fates of several flashback characters, including Helen (Jessica Henwick) and Per Stenson (Colin Hanks), but we know they'll appear at least in flashback in the final season.

Of course, Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) and most of the Silo 18 crew will return. Here are the main cast members we expect to be back for Silo season 4:

Is there a Silo season 4 trailer?

Yes, there is Silo season 4 trailer. After a short delay, during which the trailer was only available on Apple TV as a post-credits scene for episode 10, Apple finally dropped the full trailer online, and with it a confirmed release date.

There's much revealed in the trailer. Not only will we see what happens after Helen first enters Silo 18, it's clear that the fight between Silo 1 and Silo 18 won't be one fought in secret, as Paul reveals the truth of the Silo Project to the entire population of Silo 18. It also, tantalizingly, confirms a confrontation between Juliette and Daniel/Troy, who appears to be searching for his true identity. July 2027 can't come soon enough.

Is Silo season 4 the final season?

Yes, Silo season 4 will be the show's final season. A fourth and final season was announced in December 2024, at the same time the show was renewed for a third season.

Silo season 3 sets up a war between Silo 18 and Silo 1, so expect that to be a major focus for the final season, as long-running mysteries are finally resolved.

The Mandalorian and Grogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu return in a new adventure, three years after The Mandalorian season 3. This is the first Star Wars film in seven years, and, after its theatrical run, it's now available to stream on Disney Plus.

The movie sees Din Djarin and his adopted green child Din Grogu picking up bounties for the New Republic. They're tasked with returning Rotta the Hutt to his aunt and uncle on Nal Hutta as part of a quest to find a hidden imperial warlord by the name of Janu Coin.

Scary Movie

Not to be confused with the original Scary Movie, this is the sixth film in the legendary spoof franchise, and it's now streaming on Paramount Plus. The film sees the return of Marlon Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and Shawn Wayans.

While the original film took aim at Scream, this film has everything from Sinners to Weapons to The Substance in its sights. So, if you're a horror fan and you're looking for a laugh this weekend, Scary Movie is one to stream.

The Gentlemen season 2

Netflix's crime drama comedy returns with a brand new season. Created by Guy Ritchie and starring Theo James, the show follows James's Eddie, who inherits a luxurious family estate – then quickly discovers it's wrapped up in a cannabis empire. Season 2 picks up one year later, as Eddie and Susie (Kaya Scodelario) expand their criminal enterprise overseas under Susie's father and boss Bobby, who seems to be making some seriously questionable decisions.

The rest of the cast includes Daniel Ings, Giancarlo Esposito, and Vinnie Jones.

If you're already desperate for more, the good news is season 3 has already been confirmed. This looks like a Netflix original whose future you don't have to fear for, then.

Mayday

Kenneth Branagh and Ryan Reynolds star in this Apple TV comedy about a US pilot who befriends an ex-KGB operative. The result is an odd couple comedy with Branagh taking on a surprisingly action-heavy role.

The film is directed by Game Night helmers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. "We're big fans of casting the greatest actors we can get, whether they're drama or comedy people, like Jesse Plemons in Game Night," Goldstein told us at SDCC. "We just ask them to commit to it like you would a drama, and it turns out to be hilarious. And Ken just brought so much great chops to the thing."

Chad Powers season 2

Available: US/UK

Where to watch: Hulu

Glen Powell's sports comedy returns. Chad Powers stars Powell as Russ Holliday, a quarterback who, after destroying his reputation in a star-making college football game, disguises himself to join a struggling team at a much smaller school.

Alongside Powell, the cast includes Steve Zahn, Wynn Everett, Perry Mattfeld, and Quentin Plair.

Season 2 has debuted to strong reviews so far, so, if you're looking for a light-hearted watch to pass the time this weekend, you can't go wrong with catching up on Chad Powers.

Apple TV action-comedy Mayday stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh as a mismatched American and Russian odd couple, but you might be surprised by which one of them lets their fists do the talking.

Despite Reynolds semi-regularly suiting up as the dual-katana-wielding Deadpool, it's Branagh's former KGB agent who's the far more adept fighter in Mayday. And according to the movie's directors, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the 65-year-old Branagh wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty when it came to the action, or the comedy.

"He was super hands-on," says Daley during a conversation with GamesRadar+ at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to discuss Branagh's Liam Neeson-style action man makeover. "He did a lot of the rehearsals with our stunt coordinators. He did a lot of his own stunts, and just like he approaches everything, he had deep reverence and deep respect for the material, and was able to put a level of emphasis into all of it that we were so lucky to have."

In Mayday, Reynolds US Air Force pilot Troy "Assassin" Kelly crash-lands behind enemy lines in Russia, and is saved from a life sentence in a gulag by Branagh's Nikolai Ustinov, who happens to be obsessed with American pop culture, like McDonald's and Top Gun. Kelly is a very wanted man, however, so when push comes to shove, it's Ustinov who does the pushing. And the shoving. And the head-smashing.

Branagh's wannabe-defector is also a deadpan delight, landing laughs alongside blows. Mayday, then, is something of a change of pace for the typically affable Branagh, who more than holds his own opposite wisecracking motormouth Reynolds on the comedy front.

"We're big fans of casting the greatest actors we can get, whether they're drama or comedy people, like Jesse Plemons in Game Night," Goldstein says. "We just ask them to commit to it like you would a drama, and it turns out to be hilarious. And Ken just brought so much great chops to the thing."

"There's this weird misconception that dramatic actors have trouble doing comedy," Daley adds. "And I couldn't disagree more with that. I feel like dramatic actors, as long as they play it like a drama, are the funniest."

The inverse is also true. Goldstein and Daley could be pigeonholed as comedy filmmakers following the warmly received likes of Vacation, Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. But Mayday features some impressively muscular action, including a car chase involving a nuclear missile truck that was filmed for real in Budapest.

"That was very complicated," Goldstein says with a nervous laugh. "We needed a lot of the participation and help from the good people of Budapest, where we filmed for Moscow. We had over 1000 extras. We had real Soviet tanks. We had an actual ICBM launch vehicle with a fake missile on top of it. I mean, we went through that whole city. Used the airport. It was a big production."

Goldstein and Daley are currently hard at work on a Star Trek movie, and recently revealed they wrote a Dungeons and Dragons sequel that might never be made. As for Branagh, it's not too late to give him his own action franchise. Nikolai Wick, anyone?

As well as featuring Kenneth Branagh going full John Wick as a kick-ass former KGB agent, Apple TV action-comedy Mayday is also a love letter to Top Gun and even uses footage from the '80s classic. According to the movie's directors, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Game Night), it was none other than Tom Cruise who said permission: granted.

"We did use a clip from Top Gun in the movie," Goldstein tells GamesRadar+ during an exclusive conversation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. "It takes place in 1987, and we needed Tom Cruise's permission for that, and he granted it."

Both Mayday and Top Gun: Maverick share a production company in Skydance, and the Top Gun connections don't end there. "One of our editors actually worked on Top Gun: Maverick, and so he already was well versed in aerial photography," Daley adds.

In Mayday, Ryan Reynolds plays Lieutenant Troy 'Assassin' Kelly, a US Air Force Pilot and something of a maverick himself. While Kelly is soon grounded and stranded behind enemy lines in Russia, early scenes see Kelly take to the skies in a fighter jet and a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. Like Top Gun: Maverick, much of this footage was captured in-camera. "We spent a month in the south of France shooting all of our aerials because we wanted there to be as [few] false moments as we possibly could have," Daley notes.

Despite this high-flying start, the bulk of Mayday takes place at ground level after Kelly is rescued by Branagh's bearded, America-obsessed former KGB agent Nikolai Ustinov. Kelly has no hope of getting home without Ustinov's help but luckily for the top gun, Ustinov is prepared to do what it takes to get an all-American hero out of Soviet Russia, even if it means betraying his own country.

The Whisper Man

Whisper it quietly, but Adam Scott has put together a string of great performances in unnerving projects as of late: Severance and Hokum are terror-inducing for very different reasons, and The Whisper Man could add to it.

Scott plays a widowed crime writer who enlists the help of retired detective Pete Willis (Robert De Niro) after his son is abducted. What could be an open-and-shut case soon spirals out into a larger connection linked to a serial killer known as The Whisper Man.

With the producing might of the Russos behind it, and a stacked cast that features the likes of Michelle Monaghan, Michael Keaton (!), and Hamish Linklater, this will likely shoot right to the top of your watchlist this weekend. It looks suitably unsettling and, as summer turns to fall, the perfect starting point for those who like to get into the Halloween mood a little earlier than most.

Dark Matter season 2

Apple TV's library is filled with sleeper hits – and Dark Matter is no exception. The mind-bending sci-fi series, starring Joel Edgerton, sees a physicist named Jason kidnapped and sent to an alternate world, one where he invented multiverse travel.

Multiverse shenanigans, inevitably, followed – including multiple versions of the same character, and some killer twists along the way. The second season picks up where the first left off, as Jason and his family settle into a new reality.

Of course, it doesn't stay settled for long. Now it's gone past the source material, creator Blake Crouch said it offered up the potential for more narrative freedom.

At SDCC, he told us, "Once we jumped over that initial hurdle, it was totally freeing because we weren't locked into things that the book demanded us to do. So we got to follow our fancy a little bit more and write a few episodes that would never have existed in season 1."

The trailer for the third episode has already hinted that this is going to be a John Stewart-centric affair, potentially diving into his origins and how he found himself playing a reluctant second fiddle to Hal. But with the likes of Damon Lindelof as part of the creative team, don't expect a straightforward journey.

Marvel's Multiverse Saga is nearing its endgame with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, but on the small screen, Apple TV sci-fi series Dark Matter is keeping the multiverse flame alight. Matt Tolmach bridges the gap between the two as a long-serving producer on Sony's Spider-Man movies and Dark Matter season 2, and has shared his thoughts on their wildly differing approaches to multiversal storytelling.

Speaking with GamesRadar+ ahead of the Apple TV panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Tolmach, who was a producer on every Spider-Man movie between 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, touched on the key difference between Dark Matter's more "relatable" multiverse, as it compares to the MCU.

"[Dark Matter] is a very grounded universe," Tolmach says. "It's us. It's you. It's everybody. It's all of us living very normal lives. It just feels a little bit more relatable in that way. It's about normal everyday people, but the choices and the possibilities are equally grand. I just think it's a different way to explore some of those incredibly big ideas that are now being explored in the superhero universe as well."

It's a fair assessment. While comic book movie multiverse storytelling has typically focused on superpowered variants, strange new worlds, and threats to the fabric of reality itself, Dark Matter is about a normal family reckoning with exposure to a technology humanity shouldn't be messing with, and trying to find a way forward through it all. Tolmach considers this the unique appeal of the show.

"It taps into these very existential questions for the characters as they try to find each other and themselves in the middle of the influences," he says. "It asks some of the biggest questions that I believe all of us wrestle with: Who am I? What if I had another life?"

Dark Matter's 10-episode second season sees the Dessen family attempt to start a new life together following the influx of alt-universe variants into their world at the end of season 1. Showrunner Blake Crouch told us that he's "always thought of the show as a three-season story," and Tolmach is similarly committed to seeing the story through to the end.

"I want to keep making the show. It's what I do. But it's really because I don't want to say goodbye to characters," Tolmach says. "That's the hardest thing when you finish a movie or you finish a TV show; these people, these characters, become part of your reality. We all see each other every day. Both the actors, but also the characters become real in your life. And I don't want to say goodbye. I want to see where they go."

Dark Matter season 2 presented an entirely different challenge for the team behind the Apple TV sci-fi series. While Dark Matter's mind-bending first season stuck closely to the novel of the same name, there was no second book for season 2 to adapt, meaning no roadmap to follow. For showrunner Blake Crouch, who also wrote the original novel, this meant season 2 was "a lot harder" to make, but it also proved "totally freeing" by opening up infinite avenues to explore.

Speaking with GamesRadar+ at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where the cast and crew of Dark Matter appeared on the Hall H stage as part of the Apple TV panel, Crouch discussed the challenge involved in forging a new path on the fly for season 2. "Well, at first it really sucked," Crouch says with a chuckle. "It made it a lot harder. But once we jumped over that initial hurdle, it was totally freeing because we weren't locked into things that the book demanded us to do. So we got to follow our fancy a little bit more and write a few episodes that would never have existed in season 1."

After being kidnapped by his own alt-reality self, Dark Matter's first season saw physicist Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) reunite with his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley), and depart for a new world. Season 2 picks up with the Dessens settled into a secluded new home, but with the potential for infinite threats to emerge from the multiverse, danger is never far away.

Debuting in 2024, at a time when multiversal storytelling was all the rage thanks to the MCU and DCEU, Dark Matter offered a more cerebral and grounded alternative to the likes of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Flash by exploring the unpredictable consequences of opening Pandora's box, and audiences responded in kind.

"It just shows you that audiences want to be challenged," Crouch says. "The Golden Age of television started in the 2010s with The Sopranos, Mad Men, things like that, and it was in the drama space. I think sci-fi is now catching up and meeting it, finally, which is so exciting. And I think audiences are ready for it."

As for the uncharted future, Crouch reaffirms his three-season plan for Dark Matter, suggesting more excursions through superposition could lie ahead for the Dessens and their multiverse-traversing, quantum-entangled cohort. "We always thought of the show as a three-season story," Crouch confirms. "It'll be up to the powers that be and the fans to let us finish that story, but it's always been considered a three-season arc."

Mother Mary

After The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street, and The Devil Wears Prada 2, the year of Anne Hathaway continues with Mother Mary. The A24 movie is now streaming on HBO Max after a stint in cinemas earlier this year. But given it made a little over $3 million worldwide in theaters, chances are it will fare better on streaming.

More Black Swan than Vox Lux, Hathaway stars as the eponymous musical artist who reunites with her costume designer (Michaela Coel) ahead of a comeback tour, until the movie takes a hard left turn towards the supernatural. Reviews were divisive, but director David Lowery is the kind of filmmaker who's always worth checking out.

Don't be fooled by the title; this isn't Angel Studios' latest faith-based movie. Rather, it's a pretty dark Southern Gothic horror-thriller about twin sisters who want revenge against their own father for disfiguring them as children.

Despite the very heavy premise, it's a movie with a streak of pitch-black comedy running through it, so it isn't a total mood-killer. And it has a striking sense of style, marking writer-director Aleshea Harris out as one to watch. Janelle Monáe, Vivica A. Fox and Sterling K. Brown co-star.

The Audacity

This dark comedy series about an increasingly unhinged tech CEO isn't brand new; it premiered on AMC+ in April. But now that it's made the jump to Netflix, it's opened an under-the-radar show up to a much wider audience.

Creator Jonathan Glatzer previously worked on the likes of Succession, Better Call Saul, and Bad Sisters, so top credentials. Billy Magnussen stars, with Zach Galifianakis and Barry's Sarah Goldberg among the impressive supporting cast. And the good news is, it's already been renewed for season 2.

Lanterns

After the mixed success of Supergirl, Lanterns is DC's newest shining hope as it hits HBO Max this weekend. Sitting in the prestigious Sunday night slot, the new weekly show follows the notorious intergalactic peacekeepers. Experienced Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) teams up with new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) to investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska.

Billed as a True Detective-style superhero story, the series is the next major project in the DCU. We've already met one Lantern in Guy Gardner, but the tone of this one will be much darker and more grounded. This is especially true given the talent behind the camera: Lost's Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King. It's well worth a watch when it begins on August 16, whether you're a comic book fan or not.

Reacher season 4

The big man is back. Reacher season 4 has started on Prime Video with new episodes of the action thriller dropping weekly. Alan Ritchson is back as Jack Reacher, punching his way through a new mission. This time he gets embroiled in a CIA conspiracy after witnessing a young woman take her own life on the subway. Neagely is out of the picture ahead of her spin-off show, but a new local detective (played by Sydelle Noel) proves to be a standout in the eight-part show.

Our own Reacher season 4 review admits that while it's not the "strongest installment" of the show, the fight scenes continue to "pack a punch". The future of the Reacher universe is set too, with a season 5 already in the works, meaning we'll be seeing plenty more of Ritchson's imposing former military police officer soon. X-Men '97 season 2 finale

It's all led to this. X-Men '97 season 2 has finally come to an end with an explosive finale. The final episode of the beloved animated series features some major cameos, heartbreaking losses, and big surprises. Sydney Sweeney's twisty horror Immaculate is now streaming on Netflix and is the perfect choice if you're after something gripping this weekend. It stars Sweeney as an American nun who begins a new life at a remote convent in the Italian countryside. However, strange things soon start to happen and she finds herself inexplicably pregnant.

Is it an immaculate conception or is something horrifying happening at this seemingly beautiful religious sanctuary? Alongside Sweeney, Money Heist's Álvaro Morte also stars as a charming priest in Michael Mohan's 90-minute thriller. It first came out in 2024 but is now streaming for subscribers on Netflix.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn

As well as The X-Files: I Want to Believe arriving on Disney Plus this week, the streamer has also dropped a director's cut of the 2008 movie. Never seen before, this is an R-rated version from Chris Carter, which restores some of the horror elements removed from the original film.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in the movie, which takes place years after they stepped away from the FBI. They're drawn back in when a federal agent disappears without a trace, leading them into a mystery featuring a former priest and an unforgiving winter landscape. A must-watch ahead of the announced Ryan Coogler reboot.

If you've been counting down the days till Pluribus season 2 after that cliffhanger Pluribus season 1 ending, you'd be wise to keep expectations in check, as the latest update from Apple TV boss Eddy Cue suggests Carol and co. won't be back on screens for some time yet.

Speaking to ScreenRant on the Ted Lasso season 4 red carpet, Apple TV head Eddy Cue was asked for an update on Pluribus season 2's scripts and offered a brief but illuminating response. "I haven't seen them. I know they're being worked on. [Vince Gilligan's] amazing. So I'm not worried. I know it will be amazing."

Not to contradict Mr Cue, but this is a little worrying. Pluribus season 1 debuted 9 months ago to rave reviews (among them, GamesRadar+'s Pluribus season 1 review) that labelled it among the best shows of the year. Filming wrapped a year before that, even, in September 2024. Over two years with no completed scripts to show for it does not bode well for season 2 arriving anytime soon. Two-year gaps between seasons has become the norm in the streaming era, but don't be surprised if Pluribus season 2 takes upwards of 3 years to hit screens, meaning a late 2028 release.

Of course, this is all supposition. And it's possible there's a season of completed scripts sitting in Eddy Cue's inbox that he hasn't gotten around to reading yet (I dread to think how many unread emails that man has, as the person who oversees all of Apple's content services). But creator Vince Gilligan has suggested repeatedly that Pluribus season 2 will take time. Earlier this year, Gilligan clarified that "It ain't gonna be The Pitt," with new seasons releasing like clockwork every year, though he was "deeper into the process" of season 2 at that stage than he predicted. That's a small silver lining, at least…

Hopefully the cast aren't still being kept in the dark. When we caught up with Zosia actor Karolina Wyrda following the season 1 finale, Wyrda said that she knew nothing about season 2, and liked it that way, claiming "Vince Gilligan keeps everything to himself." Even lead Rhea Seehorn doesn't know what the, ahem, fallout of Carol's explosive decision to have a nuke delivered to her front door will mean for season 2. "I honestly don't know… Even if Vince [Gilligan] was saying we don't know where we're going with it, usually as an actor I would make an intentional decision about what I think Carol's plan is. I honestly think Carol is not sure. I didn't do it out of laziness."

The Last House

This post-COVID horror-thriller imagines a world where apocalyptic rain falls and everyone finds they are locked in their homes. Brrr, imagine that? Wagner Moura and Greta Lee star as parents who have to keep their family alive by rationing, growing crops in their living room and chimney fishing (it'll make sense when you see it).

Directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Fast X), it's a movie in the M. Night Shyamalan mould, with the question of who – or what – is keeping everyone stuck indoors bound to leave you guessing till the truth is revealed. A word of warning: if you're sensitive to animal violence, you might want to avoid this one.

Ted Lasso season 4

Whether it's because everyone hated the season 3 finale, who can say, but moustachioed underdog soccer coach Ted Lasso has returned to his old haunting grounds of AFC Richmond for a fourth season, only this time he's coaching the women's team.

Much of the main cast is back, including Jason Sudeikis as Ted and Brett Goldstein as fan-favorite grump Roy Kent. The less said about Beard, the better. But in going back to basics, season 4 manages to recapture some of the magic of the very first season, which is no bad thing.

Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi

A series-length spin-off of a non-canon animated anthology series is about as niche a prospect as Star Wars can offer, but this anime twist on a galaxy far, far away is well worth checking out. Set in the far future, where Jedi are a thing of the past, it imagines how a dream to resurrect the Jedi and restore order to the galaxy might come to pass.

Star Wars has always been rooted in Japanese culture – Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress was a major influence on George Lucas, after all – so a mash-up of Star Wars and anime makes for a perfect combination. Both original Visions Ninth Jedi episodes are currently streaming for free on the Star Wars YouTube channel, if you want a taste of what to expect.

The Shards

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by controversial American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis and brought to the screen by prolific titan of TV Ryan Murphy, The Shards is a garish mix of prep school politics and teen slasher.

Set in 1981 LA, it orbits Buckley prep school, where the life of 17-year-old Bret is turned upside down by the arrival of new student, Robert. Not least because his arrival coincides with serial killer The Trawler striking around town. Two episodes are available to watch now.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Apple TV has unveiled the first trailer for its adaptation of William Gibson's sci-fi novel Neuromancer, which stars Callum Turner and Briana Middleton.

In the trailer, which you can watch above, Turner plays a hacker named Case. The show looks like a trippy, tense, tech-focused ride, and the trailer is very slick and stylish. While it doesn't give much away, Apple promises the show "follows a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case (Turner) who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high-stakes crime with his partner Molly (Middleton), a razor-girl assassin, as they pull off a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets."

Gibson is a founder of the cyberpunk genre: Neuromancer was released in 1984, over 10 years before The Matrix arrived in 1999.

Along with Turner, the rest of the Neuromancer cast includes Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Joseph Lee, Clémence Poésy, Dane DeHaan, Max Irons, Emma Laird, Junia Rees, Jordan Kouamé, Marc Menchaca, André De Shields, and Isabella Pappas. Graham Roland and JD Dillard created the show, and Gibson is on board as an executive producer.

"Now, we've been building something special with Neuromancer, a world our dear William Gibson imagined in 1984," Turner said in a fittingly virtual appearance at SDCC. "He didn't just give us cyberspace, he helped define the entire cyberpunk genre. This is just your first access point. Stay sharp and enjoy the teaser, because you guys, you guys are the very first to see it."

The new film, directed by Extraction helmer Sam Hargrave, follows Cena as CIA agent Sean, who reunites with his old childhood friends from his Matchbox car days (like you didn't have those, either). Unfortunately, his efforts to keep his job under wraps hit a snag when his old pals (comprised of Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris) wake up and find themselves forced to tag along with our hero, who has been framed for a crime he didn’t commit.

From there, a globe-trotting adventure unfolds that really does feel like it's carefully parked between Fast and the Furious and The Hangover.

Joining the action are Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll and Bill Camp, who will all undoubtedly be screeching, swerving and smashing into one another before miraculously walking away unscathed.

As we head closer to the end of July, plenty more movies and shows are being added to your favorite streaming services. However, it can be a bit of an intimidating task working out what's new and what's worth watching. That's where we come in. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 2 is arriving on HBO Max, lining you up for a fantasy franchise heavy weekend of viewing. Elsewhere, Apple TV have released The Dink, a new sports comedy.

If you're looking for a series to binge instead then Paramount Plus has released a new season of crime thriller The Crow Girl that has been landing rave reviews. Netflix also has a second season of its beloved Western Ransom Canyon to enjoy. Finally, MCU star Tom Hiddleston is also fronting a new show for Disney Plus all about the history of Pompeii.

The Dink

A tennis comedy from the creators of Dodgeball? Sign us up. Apple TV has a new movie starring New Girl star Jake Johnson as a washed-up tennis player. Forced to try and save his dad's local club, he ends up having to learn the sport of pickleball, much to his consternation.

The movie also stars Ben Stiller (who is on board as a producer), Mary Steenburgen, Ed Harris, and Chloe Fineman. The comedy chops don't stop there as the movie boasts Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar director Josh Greenbaum behind the camera too. Full of heart and laughs, The Dink is perfect escapism and is available to stream now.

Mortal Kombat 2

It doesn't feel like long ago that Mortal Kombat 2 was out in theaters but it's already heading to HBO Max. The sequel to the much-maligned first Mortal Kombat movie won over critics with its fresh take on the story. This time around, new characters joined (including Karl Urban's Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana) as we finally headed to the arena for some real fights.

Our Mortal Kombat 2 review gave it 3 stars, praising its bloodthirsty action. As our reviewer writes, "Karl Urban adds irreverent energy as a post-Deadpool Johnny Cage, while the all-important fights mostly deliver the goods." You can stream it on HBO Max now.

Masters of the Universe

Another new release is hitting streaming platforms this week too as Masters of the Universe arrives on Prime Video. Starring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, the movie follows him as he returns to his home planet to take on his destiny as He-Man. However, he'll first have to fight the evil forces of Skeletor, played by Jared Leto.

Masters of the Universe is a ton of fun if you're looking for laughs and escapism this weekend. Galitzine really gives his all as the beloved hero and Leto brings an unexpected energy to legendary villain Skeletor. If that wasn't enough to convince you, our Masters of the Universe review praised how it "never takes itself seriously" and feels true to its source material. You can stream it now on Prime Video.

Ransom Canyon season 2

Netflix's Western romance Ransom Canyon is back with new episodes this weekend. Following Staten (played by Josh Duhamel) and Quinn (Minka Kelly), the drama picks up with the pair chasing new ventures to try and bring some life back to Ransom Canyon's dwindling ranches.

The second outing has slightly fewer episodes but all eight are available to stream now. The first season had a mixed response from critics who compared it to the juggernaut Western Yellowstone, but it has developed a cult following of fans who adore the romance and the drama it brings to the screen. If you're looking for a perfect excuse to get lost in a diverting story, then look no further.

Pompeii: Out of Time

It's always a treat to see Tom Hiddleston back on our screens. Fresh of the Loki star having a brief cameo in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, he's fronting a new Disney Plus history series. Called Pompeii: Out of Time, the three part show sees Hiddleston team up with scholars to dissect what really happened during the eruption of Vesuvius.

Reviews have been very positive, praising the documentary filmmaking as thrilling and witty. The Guardian even called it "a low-key tearjerker" as it takes viewers through the heroism of ordinary people on that fateful day. You can stream all episodes now.

The Crow Girl season 2

Based on the book series by Erik Axl Sund, the Paramount Plus drama The Crow Girl is back for a second season. Starring Eve Myles and Katherine Kelly as DCI Jeanette Kilburn and Dr Sophia Craven, the second outing follows the pair as they're drawn into another investigation.

Reviews have been praising this dark serial killer drama, which is perfect for fans of noir thrillers. Myles and Kelly are also fantastic as the central duo who's relationship evolves in unexpected ways. The entire season is available to stream now, perfect for a weekend binge.

The first trailer for Mayday is here, and it looks like a lot of fun. The new action-comedy is heading to Apple TV later this year and stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.

The trailer opens with Reynolds' fighter pilot, Troy Kelly, being held in enemy territory after an operation goes wrong during the height of the Cold War. The person holding him hostage is Branagh's Nikolai Ustinov, who brightly informs him that he performed emergency surgery on him with limited anaesthesia.

Luckily for Kelly, ex-KGB agent Ustinov is actually something of an Americanophile, and is even sure he would love McDonald's if he tried it. The pair form something of an unlikely partnership in the action comedy as Ustinov helps Kelly escape from behind enemy lines as the Red Army hunts him down.

The first trailer looks like a lot of fun, set to a punchy soundtrack with lots of laughs. Branagh and Reynolds seem to have easy chemistry too, which should be a lot of fun to watch when the final movie arrives on Apple TV on September 4. Marcin Dorocinski, Maria Bakalova, and David Morse all also star.

Some pretty impressive names are behind the scenes, too, with the Deadpool and Wolverine producers on board and the Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein directing and producing.

Silo season 3

Apple's post-apocalyptic mystery show is back for its third, and penultimate, season. After venturing outside the silo in season 2 and discovering that they were not alone, Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) now faces a different struggle – ol' memory loss.

OK, so a bit of a cliched start for Silo season 3, but after two seasons of questions, the show is finally set to provide answers, with a dual timeline flashing back to the creation of the silos themselves. The best news is that a fourth and final season has already been shot, so there's no risk of being left hanging.

Enola Holmes 3

Enola Holmes is back! Sherlock's younger sister, played by Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, is about to wed Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) in Malta when her crime-solving big brother – once again played by Henry Cavill – disappears. So it's up to Enola to solve the case of the missing Holmes, and expose the shadowy conspirators pulling the strings.

Enola Holmes has proven one of Netflix's more successful ongoing film franchises. This latest entry is once again written by prolific screenwriter Jack Thorne, who has enlisted his acclaimed Adolescence collaborator Phlip Barantini as director, so impressive credentials behind the camera. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come

The sequel to 2019 horror-comedy Ready or Not is another fun, frantic spin on the most dangerous game, as returning survivor Grace (Samara Weaving) again finds herself being hunted for ritualistic sport by the council of elite families. The twist this time: Grace's estranged sister, Faith (Kathryn Newton) is also part of the chase.

Arriving seven years after the first entry (directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett helmed Screams 5 and 6, and vampire flick Abigail in the intervening years), Ready or Not 2 has been a long time coming, but is another blood-soaked blast. Lee Cronin's The Mummy

Warner Bros' full-on Mummy reboot faced a mixed response when it released earlier this year, with critics knocking the fact that it's more of an exorcist movie than a Mummy movie, and pointing to its somewhat indulgent 135-minute runtime (and that meaningless title) as signs that it was a movie in need of a few more studio notes. But everyone can agree, it's pretty gnarly.

The story of a modern-day family whose daughter is kidnapped, only to mysteriously return 8 years later, having been found in a sarcophagus, wrapped in bandages (never a good sign), it's a movie that brings the Mummy myth into the home. Midsommar's Jack Reynor and Moon Knight's May Calamawy star.

Human Vapor

This South Korean sci-fi thriller show is actually a reimagining of a 1960 Toho movie, hence the charmingly retro premise: a man gains the ability to transform into a gaseous state and uses his powers for bank robberies. Only here, of course, instead of robbing banks, murder is involved.

We're not going to lie: there was clearly a limited VFX budget, so some of the gas effects are a little ropey, but Human Vapor has been admirably updated for the prestige TV era; this gripping 8-episode limited series will keep you hooked till the very end.

The Agency season 2

I Will Find You

Writer-producer Harlan Coben has become an industry unto himself. I Will Find You is the latest of his many beach reads to be adapted for binge viewing, and stars Avatar's Sam Worthington as a father jailed for the murder of his son, only to discover in prison that his missing child could still be alive.

Intriguing premise, right? I Will Find You also features a typically stacked cast for a Coben adaptation: Severance's Britt Lower, Heroes' Milo Ventimiglia and Gotham's Erin Richards also star. Just don't start watching too late at night, because the moreish episodes will keep you up till sunrise.

The Season

If you've ever found yourself wondering why a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians is still stuck in development hell, The Season should tide you over till China Rich Girlfriend finally goes into production. Set in the luxury world of Hong Kong's elite boating scene (we're all familiar, I'm sure), it's the kind of show where scandal, betrayal and, eventually, murder are par for the course.

Shadow and Bone's Jessie Mei Lee leads the cast as something of an interloper who throws a cat among the pigeons or, rather, a shark among the superyachts. Reviewers have called it "Succession meets Crazy Rich Asians," while the Hong Kong locations are as glamorous as they come. Perfect weekend binge-viewing that may give you a few summer holiday ideas.

Your Fault: London

If you haven't gotten on board with this prolific series of romantic dramas yet, now is the perfect time. A follow-up to My Fault: London (so be sure to watch that first), it stars Asha Banks and Matthew Broome as madly in love twentysomethings whose commitment to one another is tested by conflicting desires.

An English-language adaptation of the wildly popular Spanish-language trilogy Culpables, the Fault movies may not be high art, but they are very watchable. And the best news is the third film in the trilogy – Our Fault: London – was shot back-to-back with the second movie, meaning a sequel is already in the can.

Stephen King is no stranger to sharing his opinions on new movies and TV shows online, and his latest recommendation is a brand new Apple TV show, but it's not Widow's Bay.

"Widow's Bay is good. Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is even better," said King on Twitter. "It's like Hitchcock came back to do it one more time. And Tatiana Maslany is so good. The play of emotions on her face is pretty incredible. She goes from comic to terror in an instant." Comparing the show to the works of Hitchcock, the king of suspense, is big praise indeed.

Starring Orphan Black's Maslany, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed follows a newly divorced soccer mom named Paula who is thrown into a spiral of blackmail and murder when she witnesses a crime. Whilst juggling an ongoing custody battle, Paula begins her own investigation that leads her to an even greater conspiracy. The show hit Apple TV on May 20 and will conclude on July 15, 2026.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed has proven to be a hit with critics, standing at an impressive 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it hasn't blown up as much as Apple TV's other dark comedy, Widow's Bay. The new show, which leans a little more into the horror genre, follows a mayor who desperately tries to drive tourists to his small, dated island, but in doing so, triggers a sinister curse. Widow's Bay sits at a slightly higher 97% RT score.

Earlier this month, horror director Guillermo del Toro called the surprise hit "one of the best streaming series in a long time." And just this week, game developer and fellow Twitter film reviewer Hideo Kojima shared his thoughts on Widow's Bay. "It’s so incredibly good that I couldn’t stop," said Kojima. Funnily enough, Kojima added, "Fans of Stephen King and horror in general will love it." Well, it seems as though King prefers Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.

Apple TV is keeping fans of tension and mystery fed right now. Widow's Bay came to an end on June 17, but Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is still airing, as well as the new Cape Fear TV adaptation, starring Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson, and Javier Bardem as the terrifying Max Cady. Crime drama Unconditional also concludes on June 19.

The king of online film reviews, Hideo Kojima, has spoken, and this time the game developer is showing love to surprise Apple TV smash hit Widow's Bay.

Kojima took to Twitter to share his take. "It’s so incredibly good that I couldn’t stop, so I binged through Episode 9 in one go. It’s packed with horror elements, one after another. Fans of Stephen King and horror in general will love it. The pacing is excellent, and the balance between horror and humor is just right," said Kojima. "It’s been a long time since a series pulled me in this completely."

As well as recommending the show to Stephen King fans, Kojima went on to compare the new horror show to the likes of Steven Spielberg's Jaws and David Lynch's Twin Peaks franchise. Check out the full post below.

Kojima said he watched the show based on Frankenstein director Guillermo del Toro's recommendation, who tweeted out his own review of the series on June 1. "Widow's Bay may very well be the best streaming series in a long time… and hands down one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in Horror," said Del Toro. Well, that certainly is big praise from the Pan's Labyrinth helmer.

Set in a fictional New England island called Widow's Bay, the series follows a new mayor who attempts to attract tourists and breathe new life into the outdated town. However, the locals claim the island is cursed, which soon becomes apparent when a string of unexplainable, paranormal events occur. The series stars Matthew Rhys, Kate O'Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Stephen Root.

The show landed on Apple TV on April 29, but has slowly grown in popularity. Widow's Bay sits at an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and has already been renewed for season 2.

My Adventures with Superman season 3

Clark Kent is back in My Adventures with Superman season 3, which arrives on HBO this week. The third season returns to Metropolis as our titular hero faces new enemies, including a brutal Cyborg Superman who claims to be better than the Man of Steel in every possible way. In order to defeat this threat, Supes teams up with Supergirl, Jimmy Olsen, and Lois Lane to bring order back to the city.

Set across 10 episodes, the new outing is just as action-packed and full of heart as previous seasons as it manages to explore a new side to this much-adapted hero. The Boys star Jack Quaid returns as Superman alongside newcomers Max Mittelman as Cyborg Supes and Darren Criss as Superboy. The show is airing weekly on HBO Max following its release on Toonami, and is well worth a watch.

Widow's Bay episode 9

Our time in the, ahem, charming town of Widow's Bay is almost at an end as the show's penultimate episode arrives this week. The Matthew Rhys-led series has been one of the big surprises of 2026 so far, working as both a hilarious horror satire as well as gripping and tense thriller. There are so many questions remaining in the penultimate episode as we wait for next week's finale so there's never been a better time to make sure you're up to date before the final episode airs.

And if you needed any more convincing to book a ferry trip over, then the reviews speak for themselves. Currently sitting at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, the Guardian gave the show five out of five stars, saying it's "Mare of Easttown meets Schitt's Creek, but with something else that makes it singular". Every Year After

Prime Video is well known as the place to be for romantic dramas. Not only did their show The Summer I Turned Pretty become a global hit, but they've also had new romantic series like Off Campus and Maxton Hall win over viewers. Now another new entry is joining the list as Every Year After arrives on the streamer.

Based on the novel 'Every Summer After' by Carley Fortune, the eight-part drama follows Percy Fraser and Sam Florek, two best friends who find themselves constantly drawn back to each other. Think One Day meets Virgin River, the series is all about whether the one that got away is truly gone forever. All episodes are available to stream now.

I Am Frankelda

Get lost in a new dark fantasy world in I Am Frankelda, an absorbing stop-motion story set between the real world and the world of terrors. It follows a young aspiring writer called Francisca Imelda in 19th century Mexico who is approached by a prince to help write more nightmares. The Mexican movie was first released in 2025 but will be landing globally on Netflix this weekend. The filmmakers were inspired by Guillermo del Toro and his visual language of fantastical creatures and dark fantasy can be felt throughout. Muppets Most Wanted Extended Edition

While it's not something we were necessarily expecting, it's always a treat to have more Muppets to enjoy. This weekend Disney Plus is releasing a special longer edition of the 2014 movie Muppets Most Wanted. Previously only available on the Blu-Ray, this version features 12 minutes of extra footage. Fans who have seen it have called it the definitive version of the beloved movie as it subtly reshapes the story in a very satisfying way.

The additions include added character beats and more jokes, as well as expanded musical numbers. Viewers can enjoy extra verses and gags in this new version, which seems like a perfect watch for muppets fans and those wanting revisit the fun movie more than a decade on from its first release. Muppets Most Wanted Extended Edition arrives on June 14.

They Will Kill You

An action horror described by some as John Wick meets Tarantino is arriving on HBO Max this weekend. They Will Kill You stars Joker's Zazie Beetz, Severance's Patricia Arquette, and Harry Potter's Tom Felton in a thriller full of surprises. The story follows an ex-convict who answers a cryptic ad to become a housekeeper at a mysterious New York City highrise. However, when she's there, she soon realizes that this is not an ordinary home.

Several people have vanished from the building over the decades and it seems like a satanic cult may be the reason why. It's only been a few months since it came out in theaters, but you can already enjoy the gory slasher from the comfort of your sofa as it arrives on HBO Max.

With a new month comes a whole heap of new releases on streaming services to enjoy – and June is no exception. This first week brings with it several returning series as well as the release of a new Netflix original movie. Probably the most exciting pick of this weekend's options is Cape Fear, which adapts John D. MacDonald's The Executioners once again for the screen, this time starring Javier Bardem and Amy Adams.

That's by no means all there is to watch on the TV front either. On Prime Video, animated show The Legend of Vox Machina returns for its fourth season, which is now officially the penultimate season of the Critical Role adaptation. Then on AMC Plus, Interview With a Vampire returns with a new season titled The Vampire Lestat, which sees the titular vampire become a rockstar.

Films are equally as exciting this week as two major releases make their way onto streaming – and they couldn't be more different. Pixar movie Hoppers is now streaming on Disney Plus if you're after a family-friendly watch that's great fun, meanwhile Alexander Skarsgård's R-rated motorcycle romance is available on HBO Max. Finally, the queen of romantic comedies Jennifer Lopez is back for a new Netflix film written and starring Ted Lasso's Brett Goldstein.

Cape Fear

"Let me ask you a question, what is your worst fear?" Javier Bardem's chilling Max Cady asks in the new Apple TV Plus series Cape Fear. Based on John D. MacDonald's The Executioners, it follows Tom and Anna Bowden (played by Patrick Wilson and Amy Adams here) as they deal with Cady returning to their lives when he's released from prison. Vicious and unpredictable, he is after revenge from the pair who represented him 17 years ago.

If it sounds familiar, there's a reason. This book has actually been adapted twice before, by J. Lee Thompson in 1962 and by none other than Martin Scorsese in 1991. Scorsese is a producer on this version too alongside Steven Spielberg. And with such impressive talent on and behind the camera, it's no surprise that the show has been landing rave reviews already, with lots of praise for the performances from Bardem and Adams. The first two episodes are available to stream now with the rest of the limited series airing weekly.

The Legend of Vox Machina season 4

Based on Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina has won a lot of fans over its first three seasons for its fun, irreverent take on this beloved world. Now the show is back with a fourth outing, balancing comedy and adventure across 12 new episodes. This time, we pick up with Vox Machina, a year after they separated following the Chroma Conclave. Adventure, and a new evil rising, bring them back together once again to face an epic enemy.

Most of the voice cast are back for the penultimate season of the animated show, including the return of fan-favorite character Taryon Darrington (voiced by Wayne Brady). There's also a surprise introduction of Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis too, who is voicing a mystery role in the new season, which you won't want to miss. The first three episodes are available now on Prime Video with new triple episode drops continuing until June 24.

The Vampire Lestat

Now before you start wondering if there's another new spin-off series arriving in the Anne Rice AMC universe, The Vampire Lestat is actually a continuation of the show that kicked this whole franchise off. This is Interview With the Vampire season 3, with a slight twist. Instead of continuing to tell this story from the point of view of Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson), the new episodes shift the perspective to Sam Reid's Lestat de Lioncourt after he wakes up in the modern world and becomes a rock star.

The change-up in format has definitely worked too as the series has debuted to a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a lot of thanks due to Reid's magnetic performance as Lestat. This time around he uncovers new sides to his deeply flawed and interesting character and after all of the twists and turns in season 2, his relationship with Louis is still a key part of this story too and will unfurl in interesting ways across these seven episodes. The first episode arrives on June 7, with subsequent outings airing each Sunday on AMC Plus.

Office Romance

Rom-com queen Jennifer Lopez is back for a new Netflix movie written and starring Ted Lasso's Brett Goldstein. Office Romance sees Lopez play Jackie, the CEO of a fictional company called Air Cruz. Part of her iron fist rule of the company is an extremely rigid anti-fraternization policy for all her employees, which gets tested when lawyer Daniel (Goldstein) starts working for her and sparks fly.

It's pretty much exactly what you're asking for if you're in the mood for an easy, light-hearted watch. Goldstein's dialogue, co-scribed by Joe Kelly, adds an extra witty kick to this world too, making it an enjoyable watch. It's Lopez who is the real star here though, bringing back her goofball charm as a leading lady, well honed from movies like The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan. Hoppers

Pixar's latest Hoppers is now available to watch on Disney Plus. The charming new animated movie imagines what might happen if scientists had discovered a way to transform human consciousness into robotic animals. Using the technology, our protagonist Mabel (voiced brilliantly by Piper Curda) "hops" into a robotic beaver to experience life as the animals live it. It's a great premise and one that Jesse Andrews' script handles deftly with humor, heart, and a lot of adventure.

The voice cast is pretty impressive too with Jon Hamm, Dave Franco, and Meryl Streep all starring in the movie. Widely called a return to form for Pixar, Hoppers received great reviews during its cinematic run so it's a bit of a no brainer to add it to your weekend streaming list too. The movie is available to watch right now as well, so what are you waiting for?

Pillion

If you're looking for a darker romance that Netflix's new rom-com, then Pillion is another streaming option for you this weekend. The Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling-led film that won over critics at film festivals is now finally heading to HBO Max. It stars Melling as a timid gay man named Colin who's world is broadened by Skarsgård's Ray, an enigmatic biker. The pair start a BDSM relationship, which causes Colin to change in unexpected ways.

Written and directed by Harry Lighton, the film is based on the 2020 novel Box Hill by Adam Mars-Jones. Brilliant writing and absorbing performances really elevate this one, which you can stream on HBO Max now.

Horror legend Guillermo del Toro says Widow's Bay is one of the best things to hit streaming in a long time, point blank period.

"If I may- in my estimation- #WidowsBay may very well be the best streaming series in a long time… and hands down one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in Horror," Del Toro tweeted.

The series follows Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), the skeptical mayor of a fictional, titular New England island town, who doesn't believe in ghosts or curses or the paranormal... until he starts experiencing an array of supernatural occurrences that suggest his quaint little town is most definitely cursed. The core cast includes Kate O'Flynn, Dale Dickey, Stephen Root, and Kevin Carroll. The very long list of guest stars features everyone from Toby Huss to Chris Fleming and Betty Gilpin.

Widow's Bay was created by Parks and Recs writer Katie Dippold, who is perhaps best known by the chronically online as the woman who dressed up as the Babadook for a friend's Halloween get-together... that no one else was dressed up at.

The 10-part series currently sits at a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and I have a feeling Apple TV Plus will definitely be renewing it for a second season. The first season is still airing through June, so we have a bit of time yet.

We've reached the end of May and while several of the month's major releases have already come out, there's still a few more exciting launches happening this week. Probably the most exciting pick is Nicolas Cage's first TV role, as he stars in new Prime Video Spider-Man series, Spider-Noir.

That's not the only exciting release in our list of the best new shows and movies to stream this week, either. There's also a new spin-off to Apple TV Plus' beloved series For All Mankind, which turns the focus to the Soviet Union. Netflix's runaway hit comedy The Four Seasons is also back for a hilarious second outing as well.

On the movie side, there's an under-the-radar horror movie landing on Hulu and Disney Plus, as well as an Oscar-winning drama. Then, just in case you missed it in theaters, Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! is also now out on streaming, starring newly minted Oscar winner Jessie Buckley.

Spider-Noir

Nicolas Cage swings onto the small screen in new Spider-Man show, Spider-Noir. He stars as an aging private investigator and former superhero called Ben Reilly. When a new case lands on his desk, he must grapple with his past and decide whether he wants to become The Spider once again. It's set in an alternate universe to the rest of Sony's Spider-Man movies, but Cage did first play the role in the Spider-Verse films. However, this new show is based more on the comics, adapted by Oren Uziel to introduce a new version of this character in a slick, genre-driven drama.

One of the most fun parts about this release is that you can watch it in both black and white or color (read how to do that here). It's also landed some pretty positive reviews, with praise mostly falling at Cage's feet for his authentic performance. Our own Spider-Noir review gave it 3.5 stars with our reviewer calling it "a delightfully camp, low-stakes romp through 1930s New York City that proves Nicolas Cage is still cooler than all of us." The Four Seasons season 2

The Four Seasons was a breakout hit for Netflix when its first season arrived back in May 2025. It's all-star cast got viewers hooked with Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, and Will Forte all appearing in lead roles. However, it was the deft balance of all-out laughs and more tender emotion that was what made the show so popular with viewers and critics alike.

Now the show is returning with a second season, which follows in the wake of season 1's shock death. This time around, the group of friends navigate three new vacations with more baggage and a baby in tow. All eight episodes are available to stream now.

Star City

For All Mankind is undoubtedly one of Apple TV's best shows currently airing, telling an alternate history where the USSR was the first nation to reach the moon. In the original show, this kicked off a more intense space race that has been told from the American perspective so far. Well, now, new spin-off Star City is changing the narrative, telling the story from the perspective of the Soviet space agency.

It's an intriguing premise that will likely appeal to fans of the original show as well as newcomers to this sci-fi universe. What's more, it's got a seriously stacked cast of dramatic talent. Rhys Ifans plays the chief designer of the program, while Anna Maxwell Martin is the head of the KGB surveillance department at Star City. Early reviews have been very positive for the new show, which has opened to a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. The first two episodes arrive on May 29, airing weekly thereafter.

The Bride!

Based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein and the 1935 movie Bride of Frankenstein, The Bride! tells a new story set in a very familiar world. After impressing with her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, The Dark Knight star Maggie Gyllenhaal is in both the writing and directing chair for this one. It stars Christian Bale as 'Frank', the monster created by Dr. Frankenstein, opposite Jessie Buckley as the titular Bride, a woman who is brought back from the dead to be his companion.

Buckley's performance as a radical rebel drives much of the movie, which split critics between fervent admirers and confused observers. Called a sci-fi fantasy version of Sid and Nancy and Natural Born Killers, it seems destined to become a cult classic. It's well worth your streaming time this weekend to make up your own mind on the 2026 release. The movie is available to watch now on HBO Max in the UK and the US.

Descendent

This pacy horror likely flew under your radar when it was first released in 2025. Produced by Marvel filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (who worked on Moon Knight and Daredevil: Born Again), this sci-fi thriller tells the story of a school security guard in Los Angeles who struggles to navigate his childhood trauma as he prepares for the birth of his first child.

However, things start to get pretty weird when he ends up seeing a mysterious beam of light one night on his shift. He wakes up after this odd encounter with images of aliens and desert landscapes plaguing his mind. The Walking Dead actor Ross Marquand stars in the lead role of this twisty and tense horror with a very decent 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can stream the movie on Hulu right now.

The Theory of Everything

Awards darling The Theory of Everything is now available to stream on Netflix. The biographical drama tells the love story of physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his wife, Jane Wilde Hawking (Felicity Jones). The pair navigate his advancing illness and rising fame across three decades of their lives, beginning with their first meeting at Cambridge University.

If you missed this one when it was released back in 2014, it's well worth a watch now for its tender and emotional retelling of Hawking's life. Nominated for five Oscars and winning the Academy Award for Redmayne, it's easy to see why this movie is so well-loved. It's on Prime Video in the UK for four days before it heads to Netflix in the US on May 31.

The first trailer for Sugar season 2 has arrived, and John Sugar is back on the case.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, Sugar is tasked with another missing persons case... which involves gang violence, a corrupt police force, and a whole new cast of characters.

Season 2 sees Sugar return to investigate a new case: finding the missing older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer (as his search for his beloved missing sister continues). According to the official synopsis: "As the investigation expands into a city-wide conspiracy with sinister intentions, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question – how far will he go to do what’s right?"

Newcomers to the cast include Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Marvel's very own Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly, Sasha Calle, and Shea Whigham. You might also recall that rather dramatic twist at the end of season 1, which is teased oh so lightly at the end of the season 2 trailer: "Where are you from?" Charlotte asks. "Can we skip that one?" Sugar replies.

The series, created by The Cell and I Am Legend screenwriter Mark Protosevich, premiered on Apple TV Plus back in 2024 and was swiftly renewed for a second season. It also received an Emmy nomination for Best Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half Hour). Sam Catlin, creator of AMC's Preacher, takes over as showrunner for season 2.

The latest "Marvel Special Television Presentation" is a defiantly single-minded look at Frank Castle – AKA The Punisher. Still grieving the loss of his family, Frank is kind of going to pieces. When an old enemy places a hit on him, however, he is forced out of his funk and into a fight for survival. Cue lots of shooting, stabbing, and grunting as Frank battles his way through hordes of baddies.

Clocking in at well under an hour, One Last Kill is a bracingly short, sharp and violent ride. The action sequences are well-directed, full of kinetic energy and make up for a slightly stodgy first half. It's a fun coda to Daredevil: Born Again's recent second season and a nice appetiser before the Punisher's next appearance, in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The Black Phone 2 (Netflix)

This horror sequel is set four year's after the terrific first film. Finney (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) are still grappling with the events of the original movie. The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) may be dead, but his evil still endures. Meanwhile, Gwen's psychic powers are growing ever more powerful. She is experiencing strange dreams, which lead her and Finney to the remote Alpine Lake Camp. But are they walking into a trap?

The first Black Phone was an effective chiller and this sequel maintains the high quality. It moves the series into a more fantastical realm than the original, but maintains the same eerie atmosphere.

The Crash (Netflix)

Netflix continues to be the home of a steady stream of intriguing true crime documentaries. The Crash tells the true story of Mackenzie Shirilla, who was 17-years-old when she drove her car at 100 MPH into a brick wall, injuring Shirilla and killing her boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan. At first it seemed like a horrible accident, but following the police's investigation Shirilla was convicted with 12 felony charges, including two counts of aggravated murder.

The Crash delves into this strange and unsettling case, examining Shirilla and Russo's relationship and the police investigation. A dark but fascinating story.

Rivals season 2 (Hulu)

The second season of Disney Plus's hugely successful bonkbuster returns in fine form. Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant) has survived the fateful cliffhanger to season 1, and now he wants revenge on his enemies, including Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell). The war between Baddingham's TV network Corinium and Campbell-Black's Venturer reaches new heights. Expect a slew of new relationships, plenty of backstabbing and outrageous '80s fashion, and, of course, a lot of sex.

Inspired by the late Jilly Cooper's series of novels, Rivals is every bit as fun and silly as before but with perhaps a slightly tighter focus on the plot this time around, as the rivalry between Baddingham and Campbell-Black escalates.

Widow's Bay (Apple TV)

We're four episodes into Apple TV's new horror comedy and the show has continued to go from strength to strength. This week's instalment, titled 'Beach Reads,' switches the focus away from Mayor Tom for the first time, turning the lens on his assistant Patricia (Kate O'Flynn). As we learned in the show's opening episode, Patricia is the survivor of a serial killer known as the Boogeyman. We get to see some of how that has impacted her in this episode as she tries to host a party – with nightmarish consequences.

We're absolutely obsessed with this show. 'Beach Reads' threads the needle between telling an agonizing story about social anxiety and continuing to up the supernatural events that are happening on the island. Gripping, funny, and genuinely quite scary, Widow's Bay might be the best show on TV right now.

Welcome to Wrexham season 5 (Hulu)

The fifth season of this hit sports documentary takes us back to Wrexham A.F.C. – the struggling Welsh football club bought by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney back in 2020. The club has had its ups and downs in the years since, but now they are back in the English Football League Championship. That's great news, but brings with it even more pressure.

Welcome to Wrexham has always been as much about the supporters as the players and this new season doesn't change that. The opening episode, for instance, features the family of Bailey Jones, a Wrexham fan who died in 2023 aged just 20, and whose organs have since been donated to others. It's a moving, powerful story and one that shows how interwoven a local sports team can be in the lives of its fans.

Devil May Cry season 2

The second season of this animated video game adaptation looks even more explosive than the first – and we mean that literally, with the trailer showing off Dante with a rocket launcher. These eight new episodes will finally bring the demon hunter and his twin brother Vergil face-to-face, but will this be a happy family reunion?

Creator Adi Shankar has said that the new season is a step up from the first run, telling Netflix, "Season 2 is just way, way, way bigger in terms of scope and scale." As well as more intense action, you can expect deeper and more emotional drama as the series delves into the story of the twins and the different paths their lives have taken in the years since. Get ready for fireworks.

Marty Supreme

Josh Safdie's much-hyped table tennis dramedy arrives on HBO Max. Timothée Chalamet stars as Marty Mauser, a talented player (loosely based on real-life sportsman Marty Reisman) who is determined to be the best in the game. But as skilled as Marty undoubtedly is at table tennis, he's also selfish, venal, and up to his neck in trouble. Set in a beautifully-depicted 1950s New York, the film follows Marty's various sporting and sexual escapades as he winds up deeper and deeper in trouble.

Chalamet is superb in the lead here, and he's backed up with some stellar talent, including Odessa A'zion, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Tyler Okonma – otherwise known as Tyler, the Creator, making his acting debut. An immaculately envisioned cinematic epic.

Rivals season 2

The second season of this steamy romp based on the late Jilly Cooper's series of novels takes us back to the '80s for more sex, scheming, and ever-more-ridiculous plot twists. Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant) has survived the attempt on his life at the end of season one and now intends to make his enemies pay. Chief amongst them is ex-showjumper-turned-politician Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell), who has launched a rival TV network in order to trump Baddingham's. Lord Tony isn't going to stand for that, and so the two go to war once more.

Marty, Life is Short

This new documentary delves into the life and losses of comedian Martin Short. The famous funnyman has endured multiple tragedies, losing both his parents and his brother at a young age, and then later his wife and daughter. Directed by Hollywood legend and Raiders of the Lost Ark screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, the documentary paints a powerful image of an actor and comedian who is determined to look on the bright side of life, despite the truly awful losses that he has endured.

As funny and life affirming as it is deeply emotional, this is a fascinating look at one of the most influential comedians of his age, with input from his friends and family.

Dutton Ranch

The seemingly endless slew of Yellowstone spin-offs continues unabated. Dutton Ranch follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they up sticks and move to South Texas, along with their adopted son Carter (Finn Little). They're hoping to build a new life, but it's not long before they find themselves facing a whole new set of challenges and enemies.

Yes, this fifth Yellowstone universe show looks very much like more of the same sort of thing, which is presumably great news for fans. Also along for the ride are the legendary Ed Harris and Annette Bening. Two more spin-offs, 1944 and 6666, are also currently in development.

Good Omens series finale

The planned third and final season of this fantasy show finally arrives – albeit in a in much-truncated form. Originally intended to be a full season, it was reduced to a single feature-length episode in the wake of allegations against co-creator Neil Gaiman in 2024.

The new "season 3" picks up in the wake of the kiss that angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and Crowley (David Tennant) shared at the end of the previous season, before they went their separate ways seemingly forever. Now, however, Aziraphale has been tasked with overseeing the Second Coming and that inevitably leads him back to Crowley. Will it be a case of happily ever after, or will everything quite literally go to Hell?

There are very few things more exciting to me than finding a new TV obsession – and in Apple TV's Widow's Bay, I've discovered just that. The new horror-comedy is set in the titular New England town, an island-based community that is struggling due to a distinct lack of tourists – oh, and a curse that has left it prone to all manner of terrifying supernatural phenomena.

The Americans' Matthew Rhys stars as Tom Loftis, the ambitious, slightly venal, mostly likable local mayor. He's heard all the rumours and legends and folktales, and he doesn't believe any of them. When he learns that a writer from the New York Times is due to visit, he spies a chance to put Widow's Bay back on the map. But doing so risks reigniting the evil that has long haunted the town.

"Bah, screw it," he thinks. He doesn't believe in any of that stuff, anyway. That turns out to be a very big mistake...

Right from the off, you can see hints of older shows in Widow's Bay's make-up. It's set in a small town beset by supernatural phenomena, so of course it's in debt to the OG of this sort of thing (and the canonical greatest TV show of all time), Twin Peaks. The municipal planning aspects feel very Parks & Recreation – a series that showrunner Katie Dippold worked on. But there are also elements of Northern Exposure, Eerie, Indiana, even cult Australian kids show Round the Twist thrown into the mix.

Terrifyingly funny

The various supernatural threats are consciously familiar too. The first two episodes allude to a Michael Myers-like serial killer, "the Boogeyman", who preyed on teenagers. There's a sinister fog at sea, a creepy clown, plus rumours of cannibalism in the town's history. Despite the familiarity of these elements, however, Widow's Bay feels surprisingly fresh and original. It works because the show's mixture of horror and comedy is rooted in character.

Last week's terrific third episode, for instance, saw Tom haunted by a Sea Hag, which eventually invades his home, leading to a genuinely creepy – and undeniably real for Tom – encounter in his house. A lesser show may have spun out Tom's scepticism for the full first season, but three episodes in, and he is starkly confronted with the truth of the weird events around him.

Aside from the horror elements, the episode worked as a sweet, awkward romantic comedy, with the mayor being charmed by an island visitor named Marissa (Elizabeth Alderfer), and as a character piece about how quietly broken he still is following the death of his wife, many years previously.

The show is also blessed with a terrific supporting cast. Patricia (Kate O'Flynn) plays Tom's wonderfully deadpan assistant, herself the survivor of an encounter with the aforementioned Boogeyman. Wyck (the great Stephen Root from Barry) is the local folklorist and a combustible combination of Giles from Buffy and Quint from Jaws (not the only character to echo that film, with Tom often reminiscent of a more likeable Mayor Larry Vaughn).

Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick), Tom's troubled son, doesn't feel quite fully developed yet, but it's a solid performance, and an important reveal in episode three adds some tragic layers to his relationship with his father.

The town where I'm livin' now

Widow's Bay's first season is 10 episodes long, and all bets are off when it comes to where the show will go from here. Will Tom bury his head in the sand for the sake of making the town "the new Martha's Vineyard"? Will the other members of his team also encounter supernatural terrors? And what monsters should we expect to see next?

So far, despite its ongoing elements, it's an enjoyably episodic series (a side note, but it's so nice to have a TV show that looks fantastic, but is also unashamed of being, well, television and not "a 10-hour movie") but, three episodes in, there's already a sense of events building to a head on the island.

There's a thing that Twin Peaks does really well. Despite that town being famously plagued by supernatural evil and more overt criminality than most capital cities, it's an appealing imaginary place. Fans visit the real-world locations and imagine what it would be like to live inside the show.

Widow's Bay has this atmosphere too. It's creepy but comforting, sinister but also endlessly charming. I absolutely love it and can't wait to find out what happens next.

This sequel to 2020's unexpectedly good Gerard Butler-starring apocalypse thriller picks up five years after an asteroid slammed into the planet, wiping out most of the population. John Garrity (Butler) and his family have been living safely inside a bunker, but now it's time for them to venture back out onto the surface and try to rebuild civilization. But the Earth is a changed world, one beset with deadly weather conditions, earthquakes, radiation – and far-less-friendly survivors.

The first Greenland movie was a really solid apocalypse thriller. Migration moves the series into slightly more predictable terrain, but Butler is still good as Garrity and it's a satisfying sequel that takes a different approach to the first film.

We Bury the Dead (Hulu)

Daisy Ridley stars in this terrific new zombie movie. We Bury the Dead takes place in the wake of an experimental weapon detonating off the coast of Tasmania. Physiotherapist Ava Newman (Ridley) joins a military effort to retrieve the bodies of those killed in the explosion, thinking that her husband Mitch (Matt Whelan) may be among them. As she is confronting this personal tragedy, however, the dead start to rise...

Like all the best zombie films, We Bury the Dead mixes potent horror with weighty themes. If not quite a George Romero-level masterpiece, Zak Hilditch's film is still a living dead movie with – sorry – braaaiiiinsss...

Hot Fuzz (Prime Video)

The second instalment in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's loose "Cornetto trilogy" is one of the funniest films of the century so far. Pegg plays Nicholas Angel, a by-the-books London cop who is reassigned to the sleepy rural town of Sandford, Gloucestershire. He thinks he's going to be bored, but it's not long before he and his colleague Danny (Nick Frost) find themselves caught up in a gruesome murder mystery.

Hot Fuzz is an explosive collision of the whodunnit and action movie genres with a dash of folk horror thrown in for good measure. The mystery is compelling and the action scenes genuinely exciting. It's also funny as hell and endlessly quotable. The rumour that Pegg, Wright, and Frost may soon reunite for a fourth film has us very excited indeed.

Song of the Samurai (HBO Max)

Missing Shōgun? This new period samurai drama sounds very promising. Inspired by the long-running manga Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem by Umemura Shinya, Song of the Samurai follows Toshizo Hijikata (Yuki Yamada) a warrior who is recruited by the Shinsengumi – a real-life secret samurai police force formed in 1863. Members were typically drawn from the sword schools of Edo, but Hijikata is a street fighter. Despite his differences with his comrades, however, he quickly forms strong bonds of trust that will be tested as the Shinsengumi face conflict.

If you're after an exciting blend of samurai action, historical drama, and political intrigue then this new series is for you. Song of the Samurai debuts on HBO Max on May 9.

The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek (Netflix)

This long-awaited sequel to the Danish crime thriller picks up with detectives Naia Thulin (Danica Curcic) and Mark Hess (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) reuniting to investigate more crimes in Copenhagen. A woman has gone missing and it's not long before Thulin and Hess's investigations reveal that she was the victim of a stalker. Soon evidence suggests that her disappearance is linked to a sinister "game" of hide and seek.

Based on Søren Sveistrup's novel Hide and Seek, the series reunites the show's original cast for another mean and moody case. If you're a fan of Scandi noir shows, then both seasons of The Chestnut Man will be right up your alley. You can stream them in full on Netflix now.

M.I.A. (Peacock)

Another week, another new crime thriller... Still, this one looks very intriguing. M.I.A. follows Etta Tiger Jonze (Shannon Gisela), a young woman whose family is murdered by a drugs cartel. Left for dead, Etta somehow manages to survive and sets out to take revenge, embarking on a lethal rampage through the criminal underworld of Miami.

Slick and stylish, M.I.A. is the brainchild of Ozark co-creator Bill Dubuque. Etta must train if she's to stand a chance of taking out the 12 men who destroyed her life... but the cartel is not going to simply give up and die. Expect action, bloodshed, and a few twists and turns along the way.

Although the threat of the impact has passed, John and his family face new trouble from deadly weather conditions, radioactive fallout, and other survivors. Can they make it in this dark new world?

Legends

Alan Partridge star Steve Coogan plays grizzled detective Don in this new crime thriller from showrunner Neil Forsyth, previously best known for The Gold. Don must put together a team of customs employees in the UK to adopt new identities, go undercover, and infiltrate dangerous heroin-smuggling gangs. "Your legend has to be part of you. One wrong word, one wrong decision, and you're a goner," he warns the new recruits who are about to put their lives on the line.

Set in the 1990s and inspired by true events, Legends is a slow burn, but the cast is excellent, the drama compelling, and the human stakes high.

Citadel season 2

The second season of this Russo Brothers-produced spy thriller is every bit as enjoyably OTT as the first run. Spy agency Citadel has fallen and in its place is the sinister Manticore. Now Bernard (Stanley Tucci), Nadia (Priyanka Chopra), and Mason (Richard Madden) must fight back while grappling with the fallout of season 1's revelations.

Don't come to Citadel expecting a serious depiction of the ins and outs of the espionage world. Do come to it if you're looking for an exciting, brash, and somewhat silly spy adventure show with the action turned up to 11.

We Bury the Dead

Star Wars' Daisy Ridley heads up this intriguing zombie movie. She plays Ava Newman, a woman whose husband Mitch (Matt Whelan) was likely killed when an experimental weapon of mass destruction detonated off the coast of Tasmania. Ava joins a body recovery unit in the hope of finding Mitch or at least getting some closure – but then some of the dead start to rise...

Like all the best zombie films, We Bury the Dead is both a full-blooded shocker and about some deeper themes. Ridley is excellent as Ava, and the film is steeped in a melancholy atmosphere. It's hard to make this sub-genre feel fresh after decades of releases, but writer and director Zak Hilditch manages it with a movie that's very worth your time.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 finale

The final episode of this dark Marvel's show second year is streaming now. Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) must face Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) for perhaps the last time as their battle for New York reaches its crescendo. Who will live and who will die? The season has already proved willing to kill off core characters where necessary and all bets are off as Daredevil and Kingpin reach the climax of their long and bloody feud.

We're not going to spoil what happens in the episode here, suffice to say that it's a very satisfying finale to what has been a genuinely great season of TV.

The Breakfast Club

This classic teen comedy-drama is one of the greatest films of the 1980s. Directed by John Hughes, it follows a group of high schoolers in Saturday morning detention. A gang of misfits with nothing in common, they soon start to bond and realise that perhaps they are more similar than they first thought.

Starring Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, and Molly Ringwald, The Breakfast Club is a perfect snapshot of its era, replete with quotable dialogue, laugh-out-loud comedy, deep characterization – and one ill-advised makeover. It's true that some elements haven't aged so well, but it remains Hughes' best film and an '80s classic.

If you're looking for something for the whole family to enjoy this weekend, then this new animated adventure could be just the ticket. In Swapped, a cute little critter named Ollie (voiced by Michael B. Jordan) and a bird named Ivy (Juno Temple) unexpectedly switch bodies. Now these two former foes are forced to work together on a perilous quest to undo the spell.

With a starry cast, which also includes Tracy Morgan as a fish named Boogle, this looks like a lot of fun. Swapped debuts on Netflix on May 1, and is ideal for kicking off the new month.

"Wuthering Heights"

This adaptation of Emily Brontë's novel is certainly one of the most talked-about films this year. Emerald Fennell reinvents Wuthering Heights as a raunchy bodice-ripper – a move that has divided opinions. For some, the film puts a bold and modern new spin on a book that has been previously adapted many times. For others, it's a campy and trashy take on the timeless story of Cathy (Margot Robbie) and Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi)'s tempestuous and ultimately toxic romance.

Regardless of the critical opinion, Fennell's version has been a huge hit. Find out where you stand on it when it hits HBO Max on May 1.

Jennifer's Body (Netflix)

Diablo Cody's 2009 horror comedy classic is arriving on Netflix on May 1. It follows Jennifer Check (Megan Fox), a high school cheerleader who is sacrificed to Satan by a deadbeat indie band. The ritual works, but Jennifer is transformed into a succubus who proceeds to start picking off the local boys. Meanwhile, Jennifer's best friend, Needy (Amanda Seyfried), starts to figure out that something is very wrong with Jennifer.

Jennifer's Body was not a hit on its original release, but it has found a strong cult following in the years since, also enjoying a solid critical reappraisal, with Vox's Constance Grady calling the film a "forgotten feminist classic." Darkly witty and shot through with anger, it's well worth your time in 2026.

Widow's Bay (Apple TV)

This new horror comedy series comes from Katie Dippold, who previously worked on Parks and Recreation. It's set in an island town off the coast of New England – a town that is supposedly cursed. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) doesn't believe in such things. He wants to bring tourists back to the town – but when he does, strange things start to happen and he begins to question everything he previously thought possible.

There's an unmistakable whiff of Stephen King about Widow's Bay, with the horror aspects well-balanced with the dark humor. Also caught up in the chaos are Tom's colleagues Patricia (Kate O'Flynn), Dale (Jeff Hiller), and Rosemary (Dale Dickey). The 10-episode season premiered its first two episodes on Apple TV earlier this week, with the rest of the season rolling out weekly over the next few months.

Man on Fire (Netflix)

If the name of this new thriller sounds familiar, then you're probably thinking of Tony Scott's terrific Denzel Washington-starring movie from 2004. Netflix's adaptation of the novel by A.J. Quinnell stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy, a former Marine, who is hired to protect a young woman from a kidnapping plot. When things go wrong, however, Creasy will stop at nothing to save the day and take revenge.

If Netflix's version of Man on Fire is anything like the original, then we should expect explosive action and a few twists. The full seven-episode season is streaming now – just in time for a weekend binge!

The House of the Spirits (Prime Video)

This Spanish-language drama adapts Isabel Allende's novel of the same name. The story follows the Trueba family across a span of 50 years. Heading the family is the cruel Esteban Trueba (Alfonso Herrera), but the story is more about three generations of women: Esteban's daughter Blanca (Fernanda Urrejola), grandmother Clara (Nicole Wallace and Dolores Fonzi), and granddaughter Alba (Rocío Hernández). As well as being an insightful family drama, there's a dash of fantasy here, with Clara seeming to exhibit genuine psychic gifts.

Mixing historical drama with magical elements, this is an engaging new drama inspired by a great novel. And while The House of the Spirits takes a few diversions from its source material, it's still largely faithful to Allende's book.

The first trailer for Ted Lasso season 4 has arrived, and the beloved football coach is back in action.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed above, Ted returns to Richmond to take on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a women's football team. He has some help, though, from Sex Education star Tanya Reynolds. We also see a montage of all our favorite characters, including Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, and Brett Goldstein. Brendan Hunt and Jeremy Swift are part of the returning cast, with new members including Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern, and Grant Feely.

The trailer reveals that Ted Lasso season 4 will hit Apple TV Plus on August 5. The show will air weekly episodes through October 7.

You might recall that the show was set to end after season 3, with the final episode titled, 'So Long, Farewell.' Star Jason Sudeikis surprise-announced the show's return on a podcast last year (and I think it might have something to do with all of those Ted Lasso dancing compilations going viral on TikTok).

The official synopsis reads: "The fourth season will see Ted return to Richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team. Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would."

Netflix's new take on the story stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen ll as John Creasy, an ex-Special Forces soldier suffering from PTSD and looking for a new start in life. He befriends a young woman named Poe Rayburn (Billie Boullet), but when her life is endangered, Creasy comes to the rescue.

Hot on the heels of his fine turn in Marvel's Wonder Man, Yahya Abdul-Mateen ll is having a great TV year. This looks tough, explosive, and exciting. Man on Fire turns up the heat on April 30, when the seven-episode season becomes available to stream in full.

"Wuthering Heights"

Saltburn director Emerald Fennell presents a fresh version of Emily Brontë's iconic novel. Margot Robbie stars as Cathy Earnshaw, a young woman caught up in a tumultuous love affair with Jacob Elordi's handsome, brooding outcast Heathcliff. Their tempestuous relationship soon becomes twisted, however, leading to a spiral of obsession and revenge that may end up destroying both of them.

Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" (and yes, the quote marks are very much intentional) has been controversial in some quarters, but she is undoubtedly an interesting director who brings a distinct and edgy new vision to this iconic story.

Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple star in this cute and funny new animated comedy. Swapped follows a Pookoo (a mythical sort of sea otter) named Ollie (Jordan) who is body-swapped with his arch enemy – a bird name Ivy (Temple). The two embark on a magical adventure to get back into their own bodies. Being forced to work together is good for them, it turns out, and it's not long before these foes become firm friends.

Yes, this sounds like Freaky Friday but with talking animals – and that sounds like a pretty fun concept to us! Also along for the adventure is Tracy Morgan as a fish called Boogle. Swapped debuts on Netflix on May 1, just in time for the weekend.

The Boss (El Encargado) season 2

This Spanish-language drama follows Eliseo Basurto (Guillermo Francella), the superintendent of a high-end apartment complex in Buenos Aires. In the first season Eliseo manipulated the residents around him, pitting the tenants against each other to get his own way. In season 2, however, his schemes are threatened by the arrival of Lucila Morris (María Abadi), a high-profile NGO director who starts to destabilize life in the building.

The Boss has been a huge hit in Argentina and it's easy to see why: it's a darkly witty show, full of twists, turns and memorable characters. If you've not seen it yet, now is a great time to jump on board.

Should I Marry A Murderer?

If you've already wizzed through Netflix's recent cult documentary Trust Me: The False Prophet and are in the mood for more true crime then this two-episode series may be one for you. It tells the story of forensic pathologist Dr. Caroline Muirhead, who fell in love with Alexander "Sandy" McKellar after meeting him on a dating app. Sandy eventually proposed to Caroline, but in doing so revealed a terrible secret – one that puts her in the awful position of having to choose whether to stick with the man she loved or report him to the police.

She chose the latter, gathering evidence in the process that later led to McKellar's arrest. A fascinating true story.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

The most recent instalment in The Conjuring franchise puts paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) through their toughest mission yet. It's the 1980s and the Smurl family has moved into a new house. It's not long, however, before strange and terrifying events start to plague them. The Warrens are called in, but even they may be tested by this one – a haunting that links back to the beginnings of their careers.

Despite the finality of the title, The Conjuring: Last Rites was a huge success and a prequel movie is already in the works. It's easy to see why: The Conjuring movies may not be hugely frightening films but they are good, spooky, crowd-pleasing fun.

Adam Scott knows how Severance ends – but he's not giving us any hints about what's in store for the Macrodata Refinement department.

"Oh, yes. I’m an executive producer on the show, so I’m involved in all of it," Scott, who plays grieving widower Mark Scout and his at-work "innie", Mark S., told Variety when asked if he knew the ultimate plan for the show. "We talk with the writers and Dan [Erickson, showrunner] all the time. I know everything about what’s going on. [As an actor] I like having as much information as possible."

As for Severance season 3, "It’s going to be great," he added. "There are so many surprises. I can’t wait to shoot it."

Severance season 2 wrapped up in March 2025 on Apple TV, almost three years after season 1 premiered. Hopefully, there isn't such a long wait for season 3 but, as Scott's comments suggest, production isn't underway just yet.

One big change to the show's third installment is that Ben Stiller won't be directing any episode, after helming half of season 2's 10-episode run. "I love directing it and look forward to at some point again for sure. I feel like season 3 is going to be the best yet as we continue to evolve," he said last year.

Next up for Scott is Hokum, a new horror movie about an author who travels to Ireland to spread his parents' ashes and discovers that his rented accommodation could be haunted. Directed by Damian McCarthy, the cast also includes Austin Amelio and David Wilmott.

A simple hike turns into a deadly cat-and-mouse game in Netflix's new action thriller Apex. The movie stars Charlize Theron as Sasha, a woman planning to test her limits in the unforgiving Australian wilderness. However, she makes the fatal error of trusting an amiable local for directions, played by Taron Egerton sporting a questionable accent, and he leads her into a trap. When they meet again in the bush, he tells her she has the length of a song to get "as far away from him as possible".

This looks like the perfect Friday night escapism watch, complete with beautiful locations and epic action sequences. There's some serious talent involved, too, as Egerton and Theron are great actors, which should elevate this from your usual Netflix thriller. At the very least, it's great to see Theron channel Furiosa-style action once again.

No Other Choice (Hulu)

No Other Choice may have been overlooked at the 2026 Oscars, but you shouldn't sleep on this excellent thriller now that it has hit streaming. Directed by Old Boy's Park Chan-wook, this South Korean black comedy stars Squid Game's Lee Byung-hun as a desperate salesman who decides to get the job he needs, he must kill off all of his competition.

The movie has a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, having been praised for being a clever and funny satire on the corporate rat race. It's a timely watch as well as being a masterfully made work of cinema from one of the greatest directors around. Marty Supreme (HBO Max)

Timothée Chalamet was nominated for an Oscar for Josh Safdie's engaging sports drama Marty Supreme. Arriving on HBO Max this weekend, it's well worth your time if you missed it on the big screen. Starring the Dune actor in the titular role, the drama charts the ups and downs of table tennis player Marty Mauser as he attempts to become world champion.

Chalamet is excellent as the wisecracking lead in this pacy and fun movie, bringing heart to a pretty unlikeable character. In a typical Safdie fashion, too, it moves at a thousand miles a minute, but you'll enjoy every second of the ride. It helps that Chalamet is joined by an impressive supporting cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, and Kevin O'Leary. One for the weekend watch list in our book.

Stranger Things: Tales from '85 (Netflix)

Just when we thought we'd said goodbye to Hawkins, Netflix gives us this treat of an animated show. Stranger Things: Tales from '85 tells a new story set between the second and third seasons of the main live-action series. It follows our favorite gang as the Upside Down starts causing issues for the small town once again.

While it's pretty confusing if you start navigating Stranger Things canon, taken on its own, this is a fun, nostalgia-filled joy ride. As our Stranger Things: Tales from '85 review says, it's the most kid-friendly version of this world yet and is full of fun. Take it at face value, and it seems like this could be the perfect weekend watch. More could be on its way too, according to what the showrunner told us recently...

Half Man (HBO Max)

Richard Gadd's hotly anticipated follow-up to Baby Reindeer has been on our radar since it was first announced. Although for those expecting something similar, think again, as Gadd looks almost unrecognizable as Ruben Pallister, the tough-as-nails and extremely violent half-brother of Jamie Bell's Niall Kennedy. When Ruben shows up unannounced at Niall's wedding, it proves to be a catalyst for unpicking 40 years of their relationship.

Told through flashbacks and present-day sequences, this limited series looks like a searing exploration of how different families can be. So far, reviews have been cautiously positive for the new show, with many praising its exploration of toxic masculinity. However, it seems like it's not for the faint of heart, with references to brutal sequences mentioned by almost every critic. A tough and important watch that shouldn't be missed.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 6 (Disney Plus)

We may be nearing the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, but thankfully, the latest episode hasn't slowed down the pace of the Marvel series. Episode six follows the aftermath of Vanessa Fisk's death as a familiar face makes an appearance. Yes, Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones is finally back on our screens – and we couldn't be happier to see the super-powered private investigator once again.

This season of the show has been hugely enjoyable, upping the stakes for Matt Murdock and Karen Page as they navigate a New York City run by Wilson Fisk and his Anti-Vigilante Task Force. This week's outing is especially a must-watch, as we build up to the final two episodes in this season.

Stranger Things: Tales From '85

This new animated series takes us back in time to catch up with the Stranger Things kids in the months between seasons 2 and 3 of the live action show. In the winter of 1985 Mike, Eleven, and the gang (all voiced by new actors) face a new paranormal threat. They're joined by Nikki Baxter (Odessa A'zion) – a new kid on the block, who was suspiciously never mentioned in the main show. Place your bets now on if they make it out of the season alive or not...

With the main show now concluded, animation is a smart way for Stranger Things to continue. The 10-episode Tales From '85 drops on April 23.

Good Boy

This horror movie may sound like a bit of a gimmick, but it turned out to be one of last year's most pleasant surprises. Good Boy flips the perspective of a traditional horror flick, so that we see the events through the eyes of a pet dog! The pup in question is Indy, a Retriever, who moves with his owner Todd (Shane Jensen) to an old house in the country – only to find that the house is very haunted indeed...

Good Boy was a hit when it was released in cinemas last year. Part of its brilliance is that even with this seemingly silly premise, it manages to be genuinely quite creepy and affecting. And yes, Indy the dog is absolutely adorable.

Half Man

Netflix's Baby Reindeer took the world by storm in 2024. Now that show's star and creator Richard Gadd is back with his first new show, a six-part co-production between HBO Max and the BBC. Half Man tells the story of the close – almost brotherly – relationship between Ruben (Gadd) and Niall (Jamie Bell). The two men have known each other for decades, but as time has worn on, things have taken a violent and toxic turn.

An unflinching depiction of masculinity and obsession, Half Man looks like a gripping drama. Baby Reindeer was an incredibly compelling piece of work and this certainly looks very promising.

Apex

Charlize Theron stars in this tough and exciting new survival thriller. Theron plays Sasha, a woman who has embarked on a solo trek through Australia's Wandarra National Park as a way to process her grief following a recent loss. When she crosses paths with a hunter played by Taron Egerton, however, things take a very dark turn. It's not long before she finds herself pursued by a ruthless killer.

Genuinely shot in Australia, this looks like an exciting and immersive new twist on the classic premise of The Most Dangerous Game. Egerton gives a twitchy, nervy performance while Theron excels as a survivor who must call on all her wits and ingenuity to survive in the wilds against a crossbow-wielding predator.

Criminal Record season 2

Former Doctor Who Peter Capaldi stars alongside Cush Jumbo in this new crime thriller. Capaldi plays DCI Daniel Hegarty, a seasoned detective who clashes with young DS June Lenker (Jumbo) over a historic murder conviction. Over the course of a terrific first season the two detectives were grudgingly forced to work together. Still, the show skirted crime drama cliché by keeping their relationship tense and spiky even after they became allies.

In season 2, Lenker is now working as part of a team trying to halt a far-right hate group. When things go badly wrong, she finds herself drawn into something much bigger and more deadly – and once again crosses paths with Hegarty. Now the two 'tecs must race against time to save the day. Good, smart stuff from a classier type of crime show.

Rental Family

This Brendan Fraser-starring comedy drama proved divisive when it was released in cinemas late last year, with some loving it and others far less convinced. Fraser stars as Phillip Vanderploeg, a struggling actor living in Tokyo forced to take minor bit parts to pay the bills. Then he stumbles upon a very unusual gig: working for an agency offering "rental families", where he poses as a fake father, a fake son, a fake husband, and so on. He quickly realizes, however, that he is starting to genuinely empathize with his clients.

Rental Family is a sweet-natured film, one that questions if Phillip's fake affection can become real with time and performance. It is, perhaps, a touch sentimental, but that's not always a bad thing.

This satirical horror was produced by Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions. It follows Cam Cade (Tyriq Withers), a rising star football player who is offered the chance to be mentored by his childhood hero, quarterback Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans), at a remote compound in the desert. He eagerly accepts, but White's training regimen is... extreme, and it's not long before things take a deeply sinister turn. How far will Cam go to be the G.O.A.T.?

HIM didn't make much of a splash when it was released last year, but there's a lot to enjoy in Justin Tipping's film, including some super-stylish direction and a deadpan sense of humor.

The Hunger Games saga (Hulu)

There's a brand new Hunger Games movie headed our way at the end of the year. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel that takes us back in time to find out the backstory of Haymitch Abernathy and the infamously bloody Second Quarter Quell. Before that, you can catch up on the whole series so far, with all five films coming back to Hulu.

The first two films (The Hunger Games and Catching Fire) remain excellent movies – smart and exciting thrillers with a strong current of political commentary. The two-part Mockingjay brings the series to a slightly muddled conclusion, but you'll need to see how it all ends. Finally, 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is a pretty solid prequel, which reveals the tragedy behind the franchise's villain, Coriolanus Snow.

Halloween Ends (Netflix)

A slightly complicated recommendation this, because the final chapter in David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy is more "interesting" than "great". Still, if you have a fondness for this franchise then it's worth a watch and the way it wraps up the saga is fascinatingly unexpected. It's three years after serial killer Michael Myers' most recent rampage. Young Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) is an outcast in Haddonfield, following a fatal accident. Isolated and losing his grip on reality, he develops an unhealthy obsession with Myers.

Moving the focus off an iconic villain (who is largely lurking in the background) and on to a new character was certainly a bold choice and one that doesn't entire work, but there's an evocative, Twin Peaks-y atmosphere to the film that feels fresh for this franchise.

New TV shows

The Pitt season 2 finale (HBO Max)

The second season of the mega-hit medical drama reaches its conclusion this week. The Pitt season 2 has seen Robby (Noah Wyle) sliding further into burnout and questioning his future as a doctor. Meanwhile a disaster at a waterslide has flooded the hospital with new patients, and ICE agents are complicating matters further. It's another chaotic day at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

The Pitt continues to be the most intense show on TV, with one disaster after another for the hospital's poor, beleaguered staff. It's an incredibly addictive show and this season finale looks like it could be a major turning point for the show.

Euphoria season 3 (HBO Max)

The third and very probably final season of the buzzy teen drama is now streaming on HBO Max. Season 2 ended with Rue (Zendaya) finding sobriety. Cut to five years later and things have not gone according to plan. Rue is now working as a drug mule for Laurie (Martha Kelley) and while things seem like they might be looking up for Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), who are now engaged, everyone is grappling with their own problems now that high school is over.

Euphoria has blown up in ways that few would predict, with Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi all becoming a-list movie stars. Season 3 looks like another rollercoaster ride of emotional highs and lows.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord (Disney Plus)

Four episodes of this darker take on Star Wars are now available to stream. Maul is trying to build his criminal empire in the wake of the Clone Wars, while also hunting down the allies who have betrayed him. Meanwhile the former Sith is also planning to train a new new apprentice, Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon), a Jedi who is on the run following the Empire's Order 66, and very susceptible to Maul's evil influence.

Maul – Shadow Lord has been a solid hit for Disney. It's fascinating seeing a Wars show so fully from the perspective of a character who is still very much a villain – just a slightly more relatable one than the enemies he's battling.

Euphoria season 3

The long-awaited third season of Euphoria comes four years after the last and a lot has changed. The former students of East Highland High have graduated and are now dealing with adult problems. Rue Bennett (Zendaya) and her friends have drifted apart, with Rue herself now working as a drug mule to pay off her debts. Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Nate (Jacob Elordi), meanwhile, are now engaged but face their own problems.

Euphoria is almost as famous for its behind-the-scenes drama as the events on screen at this point. It strongly seems like season 3 will be the show's last run. If so, it's been quite the ride. Episode one is out now, with the show rolling out weekly on HBO Max until the end of May.

Outcome

Keanu Reeves stars as an arrogant Hollywood action star named Reef Hawk in this new comedy, written by Jonah Hill (who also appears in front of the camera) and Ezra Woods. Although outwardly friendly, Reef is secretly kind of a jerk. When he discovers that someone is out to blackmail him, however, he is forced to confront and make amends for his many past mistakes.

This is very much Keanu – famously one of the nicest and most genuine actors in Hollywood – playing against type in a witty mystery. Also along for the ride is Cameron Diaz as Reef's friend Kyle, while Hill plays Reef's lawyer, Ira Slitz. Good fun.

Beef

The second season of Netflix's comedy-drama anthology series returns with a new cast. This time around, a freshly engaged – and desperate for cash – couple, Ashley (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin (Charles Melton), find themselves up against country club boss Josh (Oscar Isaac) and his wife Lindsay (Carey Mulligan). It's not long before the two couples are also competing for the approval of the club's billionaire owner, Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh-jung).

Beef season 2 switches up the tone of the first season, replacing that run's intense feud with quietly simmering passive aggression between the couples. With a stellar cast, this is a must-see. All eight episodes drop on Netflix on April 16.

Merrily We Roll Along

Stephen Sondheim's hit musical comedy was revived on stage in 2022 and ran until 2024 with a starry cast that included Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez. This film is a recording of one of the Broadway performances, and captures the lives of three friends over the course of 20 years, starting in 1976 before moving backwards in time to 1957. Over the course of these years, we learn how their relationships have shifted.

Fun fact: Richard Linklater started shooting a big-screen adaptation of the play in 2019 and will continue to work on it until at least 2040! You can wait decades to see that, if you like, but we recommend that you watch this performance in the meantime.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2

After that blistering – and absurdly violent – fourth episode, Daredevil: Born Again's second season has really turned up the heat. The battle between Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) has consumed the city, and last week's episode saw Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) fully unleashed, with devastating consequences. As we cross the halfway point of the season, there's a sense that there's everything to play for in what has become the MCU's darkest show.

As ever, we're not allowed to give away what happens in the new episode in advance, but this is a turning point in the season. If you've not caught up yet, now is a really good time to get on board.

The Running Man

Edgar Wright's remake of the '80s action classic underperformed at the box office last year. A shame, because while it would be a stretch to call this a great reinvention it is, at least, pretty good. Glen Powell stars as Ben Richards, a laborer who can't afford his daughter's medical fees and who signs up to take part in a lethal game show. Now he's on the run, with the entire country out to get him.

Rather than being a straight remake of the Arnie-starring original, Wright's The Running Man skews closer to the original novella by Stephen King. It's fast-paced, satirical, and stylishly executed. It'll never replace the first film in our hearts, but it's a solid action movie in its own right.

Keanu Reeves' latest movie hasn't quite received the desired outcome on Rotten Tomatoes.

Outcome, a new dark comedy directed by Jonah Hill, is currently sitting at a disappointing score of 27% on the review aggregator site, based on 26 reviews.

Per the official synopsis, the Apple TV movie follows Reeves' Reef Hawk, "a beloved Hollywood star who must dive into the depths of his hidden demons after being extorted with a mysterious video that's sure to shatter his image and end his career." The cast also includes Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer as Reef's best friends and Hill as his crisis lawyer.

Critics haven't taken kindly to Hill's latest directorial offering, though, with Collider writing, "Outcome is a fascinating mess that rides the line between sincerity and crassness."

"Whatever the right time would be for an exhausting comedy, laden with therapy-speak, about the hardships of film stardom, the current point of global distress is probably not it," reads the Financial Times' review.

Meanwhile, AV Club writes that "while there are affecting moments in Outcome about the perils of celebrity, far too often Hill comes close to true self-reflection, then quickly scurries away."

It's not all negativity, though. "There’s no denying Hill’s instinct for identifying the heart of a dramatic scene and turning the volume of the storytelling down low enough for us to hear it beating," says RogerEbert.com's review.

This is Hill's first time directing a fictional feature since 2018's Mid90s, a coming-of-age comedy about a teenager who begins spending time with an older group of skaters in '90s LA. Since then, he's also directed a documentary, Stutz, about his therapist.

This new disaster movie mixes two real world fears (man-eating sharks and hurricanes) to slightly preposterous but highly entertaining effect. In Thrash a coastal town is hit by a Category 5 hurricane that floods the town with water full of some very hungry sharks.

Some of the characters facing the very real possibility that they may now be on the menu are Phoebe Dynevor's pregnant mother-to-be Lisa Fields, who is trapped inside her car; Djimon Hounsou as heroic Dr. Dale Edwards; and Whitney Peak as Dakota – Dale's niece, who is battling agoraphobia. Perfect beer and pizza viewing.

Midwinter Break (Peacock)

On the other end of the spectrum, Midwinter Break follows retired couple Stella (Lesley Manville) and Gerry (Ciarán Hinds) as they embark on a trip to Amsterdam that will change their lives forever. Gerry is battling a drinking problem while Stella is starting to resent her husband's mockery of her religious beliefs – and perhaps just resent him full stop.

Hinds and Manville are superb in this emotionally impactful film that has much to say about the nature of love, faith, and Northern Irish history. While the film has received mixed reviews, it's ideal viewing if you're wanting to watch something meaningful and moving this weekend.

Christy (HBO Max)

This boxing drama tanked at the box office. That's a real shame because, while David Michôd's film is not breaking any new ground in the genre, it's still a solid and enjoyable biopic. It tells the story of former professional boxer Christy Martin (Sidney Sweeney), who finds that she has a natural talent in the ring and quickly builds a fierce reputation. But while her professional star is ascending, behind the scenes she is trapped in a horrendously abusive relationship.

Both an effective boxing flick and a potent character drama, Christy is a bleak but compelling watch that tells Christy Martin's often shocking true story with fine performances and a lot of heart.

New TV shows

Hacks season 5 (HBO Max)

The fifth and final season of this great comedy has just started on HBO Max. Hacks follows legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), a recently-cancelled writer who finds herself forming an unlikely partnership with Vance. Over the last four seasons the two have found success, weathered a massive falling out that turned particularly toxic, and realised that they need each other to succeed. Now, following the wild season four finale, Deborah and Ava must find a way to truly work together on a more equal footing.

Hacks has built a devote following over the last few years. This final run of seven episodes brings the series to a satisfying close that's as funny and sharply-observed as ever.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord (Disney Plus)

This new Star Wars animated series is only a couple of episodes deep so far, but it has been pulling in rave reviews. It follows the former Sith Maul (voiced by Sam Witwer) in the years following the Clone Wars. Maul is set on building his own criminal empire across the galaxy and that means battling rival villains, dodging the Jedi, and trying to take on a new apprentice.

Right from the off, Maul - Shadow Lord is offering a darker and more dangerous take on Star Wars than most of the other animated series in the franchise. It's good stuff, with a dynamic aesthetic and some compelling twists and turns. The 10-part season is dropping two new episodes each week until May 4.

Big Mistakes (Netflix)

Schitt's Creek star Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott are behind this very funny new crime comedy. It follows two hapless siblings who accidentally stumble into the world of organized crime. As well as acting as showrunner, Levy stars as small-town pastor Nicky, whose sister Morgan (Taylor Ortega) steals a bracelet and gets on the wrong side of some very bad people. Chaos ensues.

The premise is daft, but there's a lot of laughs to be had here, with Levy and Ortega making for a great comic duo and Laurie Metcalf's Linda stealing the show as the siblings' overbearing mother. The full eight episode first season is streaming now.

The Boys season 5

The Boys returns for its much-anticipated fifth and final season. With Homelander (Antony Starr) having seized control of the world, it's up to Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and The Boys to take him down – whatever the cost. That may even mean resorting to using a virus that could wipe out every Supe on Earth...

OK, so that last bit feels slightly unlikely, if only because we know that there are more spin-offs to come. Even so, there's no doubting that this is the end of an era for one of the best shows of the last few years. The first two episodes are streaming from April 8, with the rest rolling out weekly. We're going to miss it when it's gone.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2

Return to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza with this horror sequel. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 delves deeper into the lore of the franchise, going back in time to show us the first killing at the pizzeria, while also catching up with Abby (Piper Rubio), Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), and Mike (Josh Hutcherson) as they try to move on with their lives. But evil forces still stir and it's not long before they're back on animatronic battling duties.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 did great business at the box office, but got some fairly negative reviews. Where will you stand on it? There's only one way to find out, and that's by watching the video game adaptation for yourself.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord

It feels like it's been a minute since the last Star Wars show. Maul – Shadow Lord picks up with the former Sith (he ditched the "Darth" bit a while back) Maul (voiced once again by Sam Witwer) after the Clone Wars as he tries to forge a new criminal empire. Standing in his way, however, is an array of threats that are even more deadly than he is.

This 10-episode season (the first two parts are already streaming now on Disney Plus) gives us a great insight into this fearsome foe, while still keeping him fundamentally a menacing mystery. We know how Maul's story ends, thanks to Star Wars: Rebels, but Maul – Shadow Lord shows us how he lived.

Pizza Movie

Stranger Things' Gaten Matarazzo stars alongside Kim Possible's Sean Giambrone in this new comedy. Jack (Matarazzo) and Montgomery (Giambrone) are college roommates who stumble upon a stash of a new, experimental drug known as M.I.N.T.S., which delivers violent hallucinations. The only way to counteract the drug is by eating pizza – but to get to that they have to navigate their college while dealing with the surreal and disorientating effects of the drug.

Yes, the premise sounds as cheesy as a 12" quattro stagioni, but Pizza Movie is actually a lot of fun, with some great gags and winning performances from Matarazzo, Giambrone, and Lulu Wilson. Worth a watch, but stock up on snacks first so you don't get the munchies.

The Testaments

The Handmaid's Tale ended last year after six seasons set in the repressively patriarchal regime of Gilead. This spin-off is inspired by Margaret Atwood's 2019 sequel novel takes place several years after the events of the original series. Two young teens, Agnes (played by One Battle After Another's Chase Infiniti) and Daisy (Lucy Halliday) are students at Aunt Lydia's (the great Ann Dowd) prep school for future wives. Lydia is aware of the injustice of Gilead and is working to try and change the system from within. Will these three women work together to bring a tyrannical system down?

Described as a coming-of-age story, The Testaments looks like a fresh take on Atwood's bleak world. The first three episodes (of 10) arrive on Hulu on April 8.

Thrash

This survival thriller looks like a lot of gnarly fun! Written and directed by Violent Night's Tommy Wirkola, Thrash sees a category 5 hurricane devastate a coastal town – but that's only the start of the nightmare. Washed into town are a lot of hungry sharks! Fighting for their lives are pregnant Lisa (played by Bridgerton's Phoebe Dynevor), and marine researcher Dr. Dale Edwards (Djimon Hounsou), who may just be the answer to saving the town.

Yes, this sounds a bit like a classier take on Sharknado – and we're here for that! Thrash looks like a well-judged mix of disaster and monster movie that's just the thing for a good Friday night in.

Crime 101 (Prime Video)

Chris Hemsworth plays an infamous jewel thief in this cool new thriller from director Bart Layton. Hemsworth stars as Mike Davis, a career criminal who is nevertheless careful to make sure that he avoids violence in his robberies. When a $3 million diamond heist goes wrong, however, he comes into contact with Ormon (Barry Keoghan), a ruthless biker who does not share Mike's concerns for life. Also on his trail is LAPD Detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo).

Despite its starry cast, Sadly Crime 101 was not a hit when it was released in theaters back in February. That's a shame, as it's really rather good. Now that it's streaming on Prime Video, expect Crime 101 to find its audience.

Wayne's World (Peacock)

It's perhaps hard to grasp these days just how big a deal Wayne's World was in the '90s. The comedy was a proper pop culture phenomena and the film that made Mike Myers a star. Wayne Campbell (Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) are a pair of dopey metal heads and the hosts of a public-access TV show, which they film in the basement of Wayne's parents' house. Wayne meets and falls in love ("Schwing!") with Cassandra (Tia Carrere), the vocalist in local band Crucial Taunt, but can he win her heart when sleazy TV producer Benjamin Kane (Rob Lowe) crashes into their lives?

Both the classic original film and its slightly lesser, but still very entertaining, sequel are now streaming on Peacock. Time to reacquaint yourself with Wayne and Garth or get to know them for the first time.

Your Friends & Neighbors season 2 (Apple TV)

Mad Men star Jon Hamm is the handsome, rogue-ish lead in this slick crime caper. He plays Andrew "Coop" Cooper – a wealthy hedge fund manager unexpectedly fired from his job. Trying to save face and keep up his lavish lifestyle, Coop turns to stealing from his neighbors – and gets embroiled in all manner of chaos as he stumbles upon some deadly secrets.

Season 2 introduces a new threat to Coop: X-Men star James Marsden is joining the cast as Owen, a mysterious character who looks set to upend Coop's world. Will he be friend or foe? You'll have to check out the new season, which starts on April 3, to find out.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again has gotten off to a killer start. Two new episodes landed on Disney Plus earlier this week and things are really starting to pick up speed. While Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) searches high and low for Matt/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), forces conspire to try and bring the evil Kingpin down. Still, he maintains an iron grip on New York City thanks to his brutal Anti-Vigilante Task Force.

It's still early days, but Daredevil: Born Again's second season is already building up a head of steam and there's the sense that things are about to really kick off in Hell's Kitchen. Now's the time to get caught up with one of the best MCU projects of recent years.

Bloodhounds season 2 (Netflix)

Bloodhounds is a brilliant and often brutal South Korean boxing drama that debuted back in 2023. The series follows two prizefighters, Gun-woo (Woo Do-hwan) and Woo-jin (Lee Sang-yi), who got involved in a dangerous battle with the criminal underworld. Having defeated a group of ruthless loan sharks in the first season, Gun-woo is now focused on building his career as a boxer, with help from Woo-jin who is working as his trainer. Their eyes are set on an underground international boxing league, with a cash prize worth billions at stake. But with big money comes even bigger threats...

The second season of Bloodhounds looks like the show has taken a real step up with more danger and drama than before. Check the series out if you're into intense dramas – this one is a knockout.

St. Denis Medical season 1 (Netflix)

If The Pitt is a bit too stressful then the first run of this NBC medical sitcom, from the team behind Superstore, might be the show for you. St Denis Medical is an Office-style mockumentary following the overworked and underpaid doctors and nurses in the titular hospital in Oregon. Some of these include supervising nurse Alex (Allison Tolman), vain trauma surgeon Bruce (Josh Lawson), and cynical elderly physician Ron (David Alan Grier).

This first run of St. Denis doesn't quite match Scrubs at its peak, but it has a lot of promise and a lot of laughs. Season one is hitting Netflix just as season two is wrapping up on NBC. A third run has already been commissioned.

We don't normally tend to theme these lists of the best new shows and movies, but one has naturally emerged from the curious number of animal-themed horror movies that are hitting the streaming services this week. Anaconda, Primate, and Bambi: The Reckoning: all three of these films bring a dose of chaos and carnage to the screen.

But if marauding monsters aren't your sort of thing, don't worry. There's also the return of Apple TV's brilliant Your Friends & Neighbors, as well as new whodunnit series If It's Tuesday, It's Murder, and action film Pretty Lethal, which sets a ballet troupe against a gaggle of gangsters (that's the official collective noun).

Anaconda

Remember 1997's Anaconda starring Ice Cube and J-Lo? If the answer is "no" then you're not alone, but that's kind of the joke here. Jack Black stars as Doug McCallister, a wannabe director who, with his actor friend Griff (Paul Rudd), decides to reboot this apparently beloved z-list franchise. They hire a big snake and head out into the Amazon Rainforest to shoot a low budget reboot. What could possibly go wrong?

Turns out, everything! It's not long before the gang find themselves in trouble with illegal gold miners and a much bigger, much nastier snake. Tom Gormican's film is as daft as can be, but it's decent fun with a few big laughs from Black, Rudd, and a reliably scene-stealing Steve Zahn.

Your Friends and Neighbours season 2

The second season of this very entertaining and darkly comic thriller reunites us with Andrew "Coop" Cooper (Jon Hamm), a wealthy financier who is stealing from his rich neighbors after losing his job. In season one he was framed for the murder of his occasional lover Sam's (Olivia Munn) husband Paul. He's been cleared of that now, but Coop's problems are only just beginning...

The official logline for season 2 reveals that, "the arrival of a new neighbour threatens to expose his secrets and place his family at risk." Enter James Marsden as Owen Ashe, a mysterious new character who is said to be a "chaos agent". The new 10-episode season starts on Friday.

Pretty Lethal

This new action thriller follows a Los Angeles ballet troupe, led by Maddie Ziegler's Bones, who wind up in trouble when their bus breaks down in a forest in Hungary. They take shelter at the Teremok Inn, which is run by the famous prima ballerina Devora Kasimer (Uma Thurman). But what initially looks like a sanctuary is quickly revealed to be something far more sinister. Soon the girls are fighting for their lives against deadly gangsters.

Directed by Vicky Jewson, Pretty Lethal is a dynamic mix of bloodshed and ballet. The premise is daft, but there's a lot of fun to be had here, with suitably balletic and explosive action scenes.

Primate

It's clearly the week for old school creature features! Primate plays things far more seriously than the tongue-in-cheek Anaconda, but it's also by far the better of the two films. In it, chimpanzee Ben (intimidatingly played by Miguel Torres Umba) contracts rabies and goes on a feral rampage. His owners and college student Lucy Pinborough (Johnny Sequoyah) must try to survive while trapped inside a high tech house with the bloodthirsty ape.

Yes, Primate is, effectively, a slasher movie with a chimpanzee, rather than a human killer. It's as gruesome and visceral as you'd hope and there's a real charm to a film that offers back to basic thrills with maximum efficiency.

If It's Tuesday, It's Murder

This new Spanish-language murder mystery is ideal for whodunnit fans. A group of tourists find themselves in a faded hotel in Lisbon. When one of them is found dead, four of the gang – all confirmed mystery addicts – band together to work out how the person died and if one of their group might be a killer.

Yes, this looks like the perfect cozy crime show to fill that Only Murders in the Building-shaped gap in your life. Shot entirely on location in Lisbon, the new seven-episode series is rolling out weekly from March 31 on Disney Plus.

Bambi: The Reckoning

Yes really. Completing our trifecta of killer creature features this week is this horror riff on the classic (and now out of copyright) character. In Bambi: The Reckoning – fair play, that's a banger title – the loveable deer is reinvented as a blood-crazed killer seeking revenge on humanity after he is mutated into a marauding monster.

If you've seen any of the previous entries in the Twisted Childhood Universe franchise (which started with 2023's threadbare Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey) you'll know what to expect here: gore, cheap effects, and some questionable acting. This feels the most like a "proper" film, though, with some memorably grizzly kills and amusing moments.
