How many Spider-Men does it take to beat Doctor Doom? Zero, apparently… Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield's names remain conspicuously absent from the Avengers: Doomsday cast list – something that's all the more surprising considering Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the last Marvel movie releasing before Doom arrives.

Surely, though, the webslinger's next outing will go some way to setting up Avengers: Doomsday? After all, other than a tease at the end of Fantastic Four, we've yet to see anything substantial of Victor Von Doom, who, lest we forget, was shoehorned in to replace Kang the Conqueror after a major(s) pivot.

Unfortunately, nothing publicly revealed about Brand New Day so far has suggested the movie will play any role in setting up the next Avengers. In fact, the marketing for Holland's fourth major Spider-Man flick has heavily leaned into this being a grounded, New York-set adventure with cameos from a couple of MCU heavy-hitters (Punisher and Hulk) and maybe (maybe not) introducing a new-look Jean Grey in Sadie Sink.

Doomsday, meanwhile, will feature basically every other character that’s ever featured in a Marvel movie. There will be classic Avengers (Steve Rogers, Thor), The New Avengers (Yelena, US Agent), Alternate Avengers (Captain America, Shang-Chi), Fox-era X-Men (Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen's Magneto), Wakandans, and the recently introduced Fantastic Four.

That's a lot of superheroes – so perhaps it's unsurprising that returning directors the Russo brothers couldn’t fit Peter Parker into Doomsday. Yet there's also another potential reason: Brand New Day and Doomsday were originally going to be released the other way around, with Doomsday coming earlier than Brand New Day, which would instead have led into Avengers: Secret Wars.

Scheduling clashes

If Brand New Day and Doomsday were intrinsically related to one another, that scheduling change would have surely caused a substantial headache for Marvel, and there has been barely a whisper about the switcheroo having any effect on either film. The same could not have been said when Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home changed release order a few years ago due to the pandemic, with No Way Home’s writers saying it had a major impact on Doctor Strange's role in the film.

In other words, it would appear Brand New Day will be almost entirely self-contained as Peter Parker contends with The Hand and his own body morphing in potentially very weird ways. Even more telling is that the always-interesting, never-very-accurate online rumor mill has primarily avoided claiming Holland's character will play a major role in Doomsday. However, it has not ignored Spider-Man completely; various speculators have claimed Tobey Maguire’s Parker will be involved somehow.

This would mean very little for Brand New Day, of course. Maguire's Parker may have appeared in No Way Home, but there’s little room for him in Brand New Day. Plus, before his "secret" appearance in No Way Home, basically everyone and their uncle knew he would be turning up in the multiverse adventure. Again, Brand New Day is staying stubbornly grounded, minus the Man-Spider of it all.

There is still a chance Holland's Spider-Man could turn up in Doomsday. The character was recently pictured filming scenes in London – but whether these are for Brand New Day or Doomsday remains unclear. It would, you would think, be too late in the day to be doing additional photography for Brand New Day, coming to theaters so soon. The general consensus seems to be that this could be something akin to a Doomsday post-credits scene, which, while pure speculation, would actually tie neatly into another rumor making the rounds online: that Peter Parker will be central to Avengers: Secret Wars.

Best kept secrets

So, a few things to think about. Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel were both released in theaters between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and both leading heroes played key roles in Thanos' downfall. Brand New Day was originally meant to release between Doomsday and Secret Wars… see where I'm going here?

It makes perfect sense for Marvel to save its biggest hero for a starring role in the second Avengers film, presumably lining up Peter Parker to take on Victor Von Doom, should the Big Bad defeat the other Avengers in Doomsday (almost a certainty, unless Marvel’s saving another new villain for Secret Wars…). This would mean that, rather than setting up Doomsday, Brand New Day is instead paving the way for Spidey's Secret Wars role.

That is pure speculation, but there’s one more rumor to consider. If Secret Wars takes its cues from the comic books, namely the 2015 Secret Wars run, then the movie will take place on Battleworld, a planet that combines various versions of Earth from across the multiverse, with Doom acting as its emperor. Some unconfirmed concept art from a few years back seemingly confirmed the film will also go in this direction (and the movie wouldn’t really live up to the Secret Wars name without Battleworld, would it?).

Here's where the rumor comes in: there’s been talk of Doom wiping each Avenger's memory in order to make them serve him on Battleworld. Now, we've seen how crucial memory is to Spider-Man’s story in the MCU: the inciting incident of No Way Home was Doctor Strange making the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. We also know that Brand New Day continues this theme as Parker struggles being Spider-Man without his friends, MJ and Ned, by his side.

Could Brand New Day introduce something that allows Parker to retain his memories, should Doom wipe out everyone else's? Perhaps the remnant of symbiote left behind in the No Way Home post-credits from Venom will retain memories of Spider-Man and give them to Parker? Or perhaps Sink's maybe Jean Grey will go into his mind and protect him from a memory wipe? Or perhaps this is all a load of rubbish, and Spider-Man won’t appear in Doomsday or Secret Wars!

There's a whole web of conspiracies out there to speculate about, and when Brand New Day finally arrives in theaters, we may be a step closer to working out what’s in store for us when Doomsday and Secret Wars release. Until then, are we sure Mobius won't be in Brand New Day? What about Kraven? You never know…

Christopher Nolan says movies like Backrooms and Obsession are proof positive that younger audiences will sit through a three-hour Greek epic like The Odyssey – despite star Matt Damon's doubts.

"I think I know what he was driving at, because it does seem like a long time since somebody made a film like this in this type of way, where you travel the world, get together a cast of thousands, and so on," Nolan told the Telegraph when asked about Damon's thoughts. The actor previously stated that he "knew that this was the last chance I was going to have to do something like this."

"But there’s a defeatist aspect of viewing it that way that I don’t agree with. I think cinema is vital and essential and continues to transform itself," Nolan continues. "We’ve got all these great new young voices in movies, making the medium their own and moving it forward."

The filmmaker cited Curry Barker and Kane Parsons as examples of the landscape changing for the better, as mega-hits Backrooms and Obsession are concrete evidence of young people going to the theater to see weird stuff. As of now, Backrooms has pulled in $360 million worldwide against a budget of $10 million, with Obsession earning a whopping $406 million against a budget of under $1 million.

Nolan adds: "This is why I never bought into the arguments that young audiences' attention spans are too fried to enjoy a three-hour Greek epic. Those films are so mysterious and ruminative. I mean, parts of Backrooms are like David Lynch at his most obscure. And yet young people can’t get enough of them."

The Odyssey is based on Homer's epic of the same name and stars Damon as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, as he tries to find his way back home after the Trojan War. It's got a runtime of 2 hours and 52 minutes.

Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic The Odyssey might be one of the most highly anticipated new movies of 2026, but it has faced its fair share of backlash.

Everything from costumes to casting has been questioned – but, luckily, Nolan isn't bothered, thanks to his experience with Batman.

"Comes with the territory," Nolan told The Telegraph of the furor. "But look," he added, "these conversations that happen before people see the film – they're always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet."

Nolan directed three Batman movies – his acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy – which helped make the storm easier to weather. "But remember," he said, "I spent 10 years of my life dealing with Batman.

"When I came on to Batman Begins, writers and artists had been working on this beloved character for almost 65 years, and a lot of freighted thoughts were out there about what he represents. And what I learnt over my time on that trilogy is you can't worry about any of that at all. What you have to do is honour the original text by interpreting it in the strongest way you personally can," he explained.

Considering the Dark Knight trilogy is widely beloved and judged some of the best superhero movies of all time, it worked out in the end.

"In the end, fans of the property – even when we were doing something that was not what they would have done – enjoyed the sincerity of the attempt to put as good a version of it on screen as we could," Nolan continued.

And, after all, this is Nolan's version of the story. "All I can do is make the best film I possibly can in the most sincere way. It's very different from how anyone else would do it, but that's what adaptation is," the director said.

A new Japanese TV spot for Spider-Man has arrived, and it sees Peter Parker take on Savage Hulk... and it may or may not be with some help from a fan-favorite villain.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, Peter and Bruce face off. We know from previous trailers that Hulk is being controlled by whoever Sadie Sink's character is, which is more or less what turns him into the angriest and most mindless version of himself (and we know that it's Savage Hulk specifically thanks to a line of Brand New Day tie-in toys). Perhaps the most curious thing, however, is what Peter is using to fight Hulk: a weapon attached to his arm that appears to shoot electric currents. This looks like the gauntlet used by none other than Shocker, who has been rumored to reappear in Brand New Day for quite some time now.

In the comics, both Jackson Brice and Herman Schultz have taken on the Shocker mantle. Both characters appear as associates of Adrian Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming, with Toomes accidentally killing Brice and therefore making Herman the new Shocker. Does the (potential) appearance of Shocker also mean that Adrian Toomes could be returning...? The last we saw him was in the post-credits scene of Morbius, where he was transported to Earth-688B (the universe where all of the Sony Spider-Man characters live), so we do know he's out of prison. We'll just have to wait and see.

JK Simmons might have been in two MCU movies as J Jonah Jameson, but he's actually never met Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland.

On an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Simmons admitted "I've not met Tom Holland," and added: "Delightful guy, I'm told."

Simmons first appeared in the MCU in Spider-Man: Far From Home, then returned again in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Of course, he also played the same character in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, though this is a different version of him thanks to the multiverse. And, since Peter Parker doesn't work for this Jonah, they've never crossed paths.

"In the third iteration, when that came along, to do a little sort of cameo reprise, that was a complete shock and a very last minute decision," Simmons explained in the same interview. "Which I still think is why JJJ doesn't have hair in the Tom Holland Spider-Man universe, because they literally called my agent, we had a meeting the next day, and it was like a day or two later I was shooting in somebody's office, some executive's office on the lot because there was no set. They were well into editing the film when they went, 'What if we stuck a little JJJ in here?'"

Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up in the aftermath of No Way Home, which saw the entire multiverse forget Peter Parker. This time, Peter is going up against an unknown foe, with the help of Jon Bernthal's Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk.

Four years after Warner Bros. decided against releasing Batgirl, star J.K. Simmons still has no idea why.

"It's bizarre. Apparently, one test audience saw it, and, you know, it wasn’t like it was like a bad score from the test audience," Simmons said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "It was, yeah, it was a whatever business decision obviously, and and then yeah, Justice League, which was a very small part, had its own drama attached to it. But then Zack’s cut... the director’s cut came out, which the DC fans, you know, really love."

Simmons played Commissioner Gordon in Joss Whedon's ill-fated Justice League, which hit theaters in 2017 and was released to largely negative reviews. He appeared in the famous Snyder Cut of the film, which prompted more fans to revisit his performance and praise it as underrated. He would then play Commissioner Gordon again in Batgirl, which starred Leslie Grace as his daughter Barbara Gordon aka the titular vigilante. Filmmaker duo El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directed from a screenplay by Christina Hodson.

However, the movie, which was slated for an eventual HBO Max release, was suddenly shelved in 2022. At the time, Warner Bros. claimed it was for cost-cutting reasons and a re-focus on theatrical releases. Later that year, James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios, which ended the DCEU and started the DCU. When asked about the film, Safran said that the film was "not releasable," but did not give a reason why.

"When Batgirl came along with Adil [El Arbi] and Bilall [Fallah] and, you know, it was an exciting prospect to be part of the origin story of Batgirl," Simmons continued. "For those who don’t know, Commissioner Gordon’s daughter. Maybe we’ll never know... We really had a good time making it and, you know, thought it was going to be a fun superhero movie. Oh well."

A new trailer for the much-anticipated follow-up to Godzilla Minus One has arrived and it promises an epic return to the kaiju's world. Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years on from the events of the first movie as we reunite with the Shikishima family as they face a new disaster.

The first trailer was released earlier this year and saw the kaiju descend on New York City. The latest teaser builds on this, beginning with the confirmation of the time jump. "I speculate Godzilla can withstand even a thermonuclear strike," the voiceover says. "Another moral boundary mankind shouldn't cross."

The cast of the original movie are also back too in the sequel. Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi alongside Minami Hamabe as Noriko and Sae Nagatani as Akiko. Godzilla Minus Zero doesn't only follow in the footsteps of the acclaimed Godzilla Minus One either as it joins the legacy of a long Godzilla franchise behind it, becoming the 39th movie released (and 34th produced by Toho).

Teasing the new film earlier this year, writer and director Takashi Yamazaki said (per The Hollywood Reporter): "In this new film, an even deeper despair will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family. When faced when overwhelming and inescapable force, how do people fight back? The journey from Minus to Zero will not be an easy one."

Patrick Stewart isn't planning on retiring from acting any time soon.

A rumor hit the internet that Stewart would be retiring from acting after his role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, but, luckily, in a recent interview, the actor spoke about where he saw his career going next.

"As any actor my age will tell you, there are fewer and fewer available roles as we get older," Stewart told TV Insider, when asked about retirement. "That being said, I still continue to receive interesting offers and I love being challenged by new work, like voicing a pig's head in Riz Ahmed's brilliant new series Bait. I can't imagine ever officially 'retiring.' I'll always and forever be an actor."

Stewart will once again play Professor Charles Xavier in Doomsday, returning opposite Ian McKellen's Magneto.

One of the first trailers for the film features Professor X and Magneto playing chess together, before Cyclops drops to his knees in anguish and unleashes his powers.

But, one person who won't be returning is Famke Janssen's Jean Grey. "I think they made a mistake, but hey, who am I? I'm just a little me who thinks that," Janssen has said of not making a comeback.

Robert Downey Jr., meanwhile, returns to the MCU, too – except he's playing Doctor Doom, not Iron Man.

"There's something going on in Doomsday and forward that is literally the only antidote to, 'How do you not have these films be let down after an Infinity War and an Endgame?' And boy, have we labored long and hard to bring that down," he has teased of the movie.

Mortal Kombat 2 director Simon McQuoid says the sequel's multiple deaths were vital to the film (and franchise as a whole), and names one as particularly moving.

Warning: major spoilers for Mortal Kombat 2 below!

"We felt with a title like Mortal Kombat and where death is such an important part of the makeup of it, that we wanted people to feel that and to feel the loss of the character, whatever character it was and however they died or exited," McQuoid tells GamesRadar+. "It needed to literally pack a punch, but emotionally pack a punch as well."

The sequel, which introduces Karl Urban's Johnny Cage as he finds his purpose after his acting career dries up, had a grand total of eight major deaths. This includes King Jerrod, Sindel, Revenant, Kung Lao, Cole Young, Saibot, Shao Kahn, Jax, and Liu Kang. At the end of the film, Jonny and Sonya are the only Earthrealm champions, Kitana is crowned Queen of Edenia, and Scorpion, Jade, and Kano are also alive.

Continues McQuoid: "Those various sort of pairings that were built and created by Ed [Boon] in the Mortal Kombat history, like Liu Kang and Kung Lao and Scorpion and Bi-Han and so on. They're all there, and every character in our second story needed to go on their own journey."

Of all the deaths in the film, McQuoid singles out the scene where Shao Kahn rips off Jax's bionic arms and effectively kills him as the most moving to film, as well as the one with the standout audience reaction.

"I actually thought Mehcad [Brooks] did an amazing job with Jax's death. He handled that so beautifully. I've sat in a couple of screenings where the audience really gasped at that moment. Mehcad really understood, 'Okay, I get why this is happening and I get why this matters, and it's important, and I get why Sonya needs to sort of see that happen and, and how that emotionally hits.' It was great. Amazing. It was quite sort of moving on set actually when that was happening. We were all kind of like, 'Oh, shit. What have we done?'"

As for Liu Kang's death, which definitely came as a shock, screenwriter Jeremy Slater previously said that it's meant to be open-ended... and that we will see him again in Mortal Kombat 3. The third installment hasn't been officially greenlit, but the script has been in progress since it was announced back in October 2025 at New York Comic Con.

Mortal Kombat 2 director Simon McQuoid says working closely with NetherRealm and franchise co-creator Ed Boon made for a much better production process this time around.

"Ed was part of this, the second film, from the get-go, and it actually made the creative process a lot easier and more satisfying," McQuoid tells GamesRadar+. "And the more I got to know Ed, it just became more fun. He's such a lovely guy, and he's just a good guy to hang with. And we had these really good creative conversations that... to be able to just go to the master and ask, 'So what, why is this... Why did you do it that way?'

"And then sometimes he'd give quite a sort of detailed explanation of like, 'Okay, well, it came from here, and it started there.' And then other times I'd say, 'So why did you do that?' And he's like, 'Oh, we just thought it'd be cool.' We were always on sort of strong footing. There was no guesswork. It was just kind of like, 'Oh, well, we'll ask Ed.' And his creative director and storywriter, [Dominic Cianciolo]. He was great, too. So the two of them together were just really, really helpful."

Mortal Kombat was created by Ed Boon and John Tobias as part of Midway Games, now NetherRealm, in 1992. Despite being owned by Warner Brothers Games, NetherRealm wasn't directly involved with the first Mortal Kombat movie, which was distributed by Warner Bros. in 2021. Some fans thought this was strange, given that Boon worked so closely with the original 1995 and 1997 film adaptations that he even provided the voice of Scorpion.

Mortal Kombat 2 screenwriter Jeremy Slater previously said that one of the first film's biggest mistakes was the lack of involvement from NetherRealm, and that they plan to have the studio's involvement in every film going forward. A third movie was announced at New York City Comic Con back in October 2025, though there hasn't been much news since then. McQuoid tells GR+ he wants the second film to have a life on digital and streaming before he starts work on a third movie. It's exciting to know that Boon will still be directly involved, given that he and McQuoid seem to be so in sync.

"As an example, Cappi Ireland, the costume designer... we were sort of chatting about what Johnny was gonna wear in Uncaged Fury," McQuoid continues. "And obviously there's a lot of, through the history of what Johnny's worn over things, there's a lot of different things he wears and different options you have in the game, and we've seen him in different things.

"Cappi was like, 'What do you think about this crazy-looking thing?' And I was like, 'I think that that's good. It sort of has a classic-ness to it, and it's certainly a favorite of those who play the game.' So there was this whole conversation, and I said, 'well, what I'm gonna do is, I'm gonna ask Ed to email me what he thinks Johnny should wear, and I'll, I'm gonna say to him, 'I'll email you at the same time, and then tomorrow when I come in, we'll see what we both said to each other.' It was like, 'Let's flip it over.' He emailed me the same costume, and I emailed him the same costume."

4 years ago, the MCU dropped one of its wildest post-credit cameos ever – and, nearly half a decade later, we're still waiting for the payoff.

Thor: Love and Thunder arrived on July 8, 2022, and, in the post-credits, the son of Russell Crowe's Zeus, Hercules, was introduced. He was played by Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein, and he was tasked with hunting down Thor.

That sounds like a great hook for a sequel, right? Well, apparently not, because Goldstein's Hercules hasn't been seen again since.

In fairness, neither has Chris Hemsworth's Thor, though he's set to show up again in Avengers: Doomsday (with his Infinity War haircut, too).

Even Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi didn't seem quite sure what was going to become of Hercules. "And I don't know if that's to do with Thor, or if it's to do with how that will develop," Waititi told Uproxx. "Because, obviously, Hercules, there's a character from the books as well. And so, yeah, this will be interesting to see because Kevin [Feige], he's obviously the mastermind of all of these threads and how they'll tie up and how they meet, mix and match. So I'm curious to find out myself."

Marvel fans have wondered before if we'll ever see Hercules again, too, so his absence has been noted.

It seems unlikely that Hercules will appear in Doomsday, however, considering Goldstein wasn't part of the supersized cast line-up. Still, never say never – he may well show up to battle Thor someday.

In the meantime, Goldstein can soon be seen in Ted Lasso season 4, which arrives this August 5.

What is The Odyssey poem?

The Odyssey is an epic poem dating back to ancient Greece. Its authorship is attributed to a poet named Homer. He is also credited with the Iliad, another epic poem which is set during the Trojan War and takes place before the events of The Odyssey. However, whether Homer was a real person, and whether this person composed both poems, is a matter of debate.

These poems were not actually 'written,' but were passed down in oral traditions, until they were eventually set to paper for us to enjoy thousands of years later.

What is The Odyssey poem about?

The tale picks up after the end of the Trojan War, which is probably one of the most famous stories ever told. The war was sparked by the Trojan prince Paris absconding with Helen of Troy (whether she went willingly or not varies) and led to an alliance of the Greeks, led by Agamemnon (brother of Menalaus, Helen's husband), laying siege to the walled city of Troy. The war lasted 10 years, though most of the action came at the very end.

The hero of the Odyssey, Odysseus, came up with the ingenious plan of building a wooden horse to hide the Greek army inside, disguised as an offering to the gods after the Greek forces supposedly retreated. The Trojans took the horse inside their gates, and then the city was brutally sacked by the Greek forces. It's not a happy or triumphant ending to the tale, but Helen is returned to her husband, and the Greek army leaves for home.

But, Odysseus has a terrible time trying to get back to his island of Ithaca, and this is the story that the Odyssey covers. His journey takes him another 10 years, while, at home, his wife Penelope awaits his return, endlessly weaving (and then secretly unpicking her work overnight) to distract scores of belligerent suitors who wish to marry her, assuming Odysseus is dead. Odysseus has fantastical adventures on his way home, like facing a cyclops, giants, and a powerful witch, and it's these the film will depict.

How is The Odyssey connected to the Iliad?

The Odyssey is something of a sequel to the Iliad. The Iliad is another epic poem attributed to Homer, and it tells the story of a decisive chapter of the Trojan War. It involves heroes you may well have heard of – Achilles, Hector, Ajax, and Odysseus himself, to name a few – as well as the gods and goddesses of Greek myth.

The Iliad poem does not actually tell the story of the entire war, however. Instead, it focuses on a short period of time towards the end of the fighting, specifically a climactic showdown between the Greek hero Achilles and the Trojan hero Hector, which ends with Hector's death.

In fact, there isn't strictly one text that tells the entire story of the Trojan War – instead, our understanding of it comes from multiple sources. The Trojan Horse and the fall of Troy is perhaps most famously depicted by the Roman poet Virgil's Aeneid. However, the Trojan Horse is mentioned in the Odyssey by Menelaus, husband of Helen, as well as Helen herself, and the Odyssey also contains flashbacks to the war.

The Iliad has its own modern, big budget film adaptation in 2004's Troy. This movie takes some hefty liberties with the source material, but captures the general story.

Below is a character by character breakdown of all the major players in The Odyssey movie. However, the information is based on the mythology, so they might be represented differently in the movie. We're also keeping things spoiler-free for events that might occur in the film and might ruin your experience if you know about them ahead of time.

Matt Damon as Odysseus

Odysseus is the main character of the story. It was his idea to build the infamous Trojan Horse and hide inside of it to be smuggled through Troy's walls. Then, he sets off for home with his men, but they are soon lost – and remain lost for 10 years.

Anne Hathaway as Penelope

Penelope is Odysseus's wife. She hasn't seen her husband in 20 years – the Trojan War took 10 years, and then Odysseus is lost for another 10. Her home is crowded with suitors who wish to marry her and claim the throne of Ithaca, but Penelope keeps them at bay by saying she won't wed until she has finished her weaving. But, each night, she secretly unpicks her work.

Tom Holland as Telemachus

Telemachus is the son of Odysseus and Penelope. He sets off on a quest of his own in the hopes of finding news of Odysseus to bring home.

Robert Pattinson as Antinous

Antinous is one of the many suitors in Penelope's hall. He is their de facto leader, and he's a brutal, unlikeable character who targets Telemachus.

Zendaya as Athena

Athena is the goddess of wisdom, and Odysseus is a particular favorite of hers. In the poem, she appears to Odysseus on his voyage in disguise.

Samantha Norton as Circe

Circe is a powerful witch, daughter of Helios the sun god, and sister to Aeëtes (King of Colchis and father of Medea, both prominent figures in the tale of Jason and the Argonauts), and Pasiphaë (Queen of Crete and mother of the Minotaur, the beast famously slain by the hero Theseus in the labyrinth). In the poem, Odysseus and his crew take refuge on her island of Aeaea, at their peril.

Charlize Theron as Calypso

Calypso is a nymph who lives on the island of Ogygia and is a daughter of the Titan Atlas (he's the one who holds the world on his shoulders). Odysseus ends up on her island, and Calypso isn't keen on the idea of letting him go.

Jon Bernthal as Menelaus

Menelaus is the husband of Helen of Troy (at first known as Helen of Sparta) and the brother of Agamemnon, who is leader of the Greek army. Helen is stolen away (or goes willingly, depending on the interpretation) by Paris, a prince of Troy, and the Greeks go to war to get her back.

Benny Safdie as Agamemnon

Agamemnon is leader of the Greek army and brother of Menelaus, husband of Helen of Troy. Agamemnon gathers forces from across Greece to go to Troy and lay siege to the city. The war lasts for 10 years, and Agamemnon survives and returns home, though his story doesn't end there. He's married to Clytemnestra, twin sister of Helen of Troy.

Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy

Helen of Troy (or Sparta, originally) is the most beautiful woman in the world, and she's married to Menelaus. When Helen and Menelaus married, all the other suitors vying for Helen's hand swore an oath to defend her, should she ever be stolen away. She was later either taken by Paris, a prince of Troy, or went with him willingly – it all depends on the source and the interpretation (the Iliad has her going of her own accord). Either way, her disappearance sparks the 10 year Trojan War. During the war, Helen is safe behind Troy's walls. When the Greeks win, she is returned to Menelaus.

Elliot Page as Sinon

Sinon is a Greek soldier who helps deceive the Trojans into accepting the Trojan Horse. Interestingly, he doesn't actually show up in either of the Homeric poems, but can be found in other sources (including Virgil's Aeneid).

Himesh Patel as Eurylochus

Eurylochus is Odysseus's second-in-command on the voyage home, and he's also married to Odysseus's sister. He isn't portrayed in a very flattering light in the epic poem, however, and is seen as a coward.

Mia Goth as Melantho

Melantho is a slave in Penelope and Odysseus's household. However, despite being Penelope's favorite, she betrays the family by siding with the suitors.

John Leguizamo as Eumaeus

Eumaeus is a swineherd and a dear friend of Odysseus's, and he was also raised alongside Odysseus, too.

Ryan Hurst as Mentor

Mentor is a friend of Odysseus's, and he was tasked with taking care of Telemachus after Odysseus left for the Trojan War.

Christopher Nolan has said that one actor in his upcoming The Odyssey has been getting a similar reception to Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning performance in The Dark Knight. Samantha Morton, who plays goddess Circe in the new movie, received a round of applause on set, something that has only happened once before in Nolan's career.

"This was a massive film and she is someone who comes in and changes the dynamic," Nolan said to The L.A. Times. "In some weird way, the film lived or died over that character. She was the fulcrum. I’ve always admired Samantha's work, she brings so much depth of thinking about her role, there are no limitations on her performance.

"After one of her takes, the crew gave her a great round of applause. I was talking with Emma [Thomas, Nolan's producing partner and wife] afterwards and she remembered that the last time that had happened was with Heath Ledger on The Dark Knight."

Ledger's legendary performance led to him receiving a posthumous Academy Award following his death in 2008.

Morton's screentime is relatively brief in The Odyssey but early reactions have been praising her performance. "You are not ready for Samantha Morton in The Odyssey," wrote Empire editor Nick de Semlyen. Meanwhile journalist Andrew J. Salazar tweeted that "Samantha Morton’s sequence in The Odyssey is perhaps the best of the entire film and we're going to be talking about it for years to come."

The Odyssey is based on Homer's epic of the same name and stars Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus. It follows the Greek king of Ithaca as he tries to find his way back home after the Trojan War.

Following the film's surprise box office takeover, Obsession star Inde Navarrette has been meeting with some pretty interesting directors... and we could be seeing her in the MCU.

In an interview with Nylon, Navarrette said she met with Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier, who is set to helm the MCU's first standalone X-Men movie, and even Michael Mann – who is currently busy with Heat 2. When asked if she would star in a Marvel movie, Navarrette simply said, "I would."

The actor is in high demand after Obsession, an absolutely stellar horror movie about a dude who sucks and decides to use a magical knick-knack to get a woman to love him instead of just asking her out, earned over $400 million at the global box office against a budget of just $750,000. Navarrette has been praised for her acting chops, with many scenes going viral online, and this is definitely just the beginning of what's about to be a very long career.

"I really want to prove that Obsession wasn’t just lightning in a bottle," Navarrette added in the same interview. "This is something that I really love and want to continue doing, but of course that’s going to take time. I want people to take that time to trust that I have that capability."

Navarrette can be next seen in the thriller Invertigo, which just wrapped filming. Marvel's untitled X-Men movie is set to arrive sometime in 2028. Despite rumors that he'd join the cast as Two-Face, Sebastian Stan has seemingly been spotted with a brand-new look while filming The Batman 2... and now DC fans think he might be playing Victor Zsasz in the upcoming sequel.

Here's the thing: The Batman 2 is indeed currently filming, but it hasn't been verified yet that this is a photo from July 2026 (and you can see it for yourself below). Stan shaved his head bald for Fjord, a legal thriller drama that was shot in 2025 and premiered at Cannes in May 2026. If this is a recent photo, that means Stan isn't playing Harvey Dent aka Two-Face after all... and there's some truth to the June 2026 report from The Insneider that claims Stan is playing sadomasochistic creepazoid Victor Zsasz, and that Brian Tyree Henry is playing Harvey Dent.

Though you may not be familiar with Zsasz, we've already seen him three times in live-action form: Tim Booth plays a version that works as an enforcer for Carmine in Batman Begins; Anthony Carrigan played him in the TV show Gotham, and Chris Messina portrayed him as a killer-for-hire who works for Black Mask in Birds of Prey. Zsasz first appeared in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1 back in 1992, and is known for carving a tally mark into his skin to represent each of his victims.

One fan shared an alleged screenshot from Stan's stylist Michael Fisher, in which he seems to have posted a fan-made photo of Stan as Harvey Dent in response to the clean-shaven photo... so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Anne Hathaway's audition story about The Dark Knight Rises is going viral again... and it'll always be iconic.

"Here's the thing that worked in my favor: she's a chameleon," Hathaway said in a new interview with Josh Horowitz during press for The Odyssey, which can be viewed below. "So, I knew I was auditioning for... I was meeting with Chris [Nolan] for the female role in the Batman trilogy, the next installment. I thought that I'd gamed it out, because I was just like, 'It can't be Catwoman because Michelle Pfeiffer was so iconic... [gasp] It's going to be Harley Quinn!'"

There are a few villains in The Dark Knight Rises, but none of them are The Joker (as Heath Ledger's untimely passing led to the introduction of Bane and Ra's al Ghul in the third and final installment). Though times have changed and it wouldn't be weird to introduce Harley Quinn as a solo character in 2026, it wouldn't have made much sense back in 2012. Still, Hathaway's reasoning that there's no way they could introduce Catwoman does make some sense...

"So, I spent a week developing demonic Harley Quinn energy. I was wearing weird jester flats and a striped top. And then, about two hours into our conversation, Chris is like, 'So, the part's Catwoman,' and I was like, 'Transform!' So, I just then decided that I was like, 'Well, this top is very sensual.' And I was going to be very... like a psychopath. I changed personalities like a psychopath."

Zoe Kravitz is the newest live-action Catwoman, having starred as Selina Kyle in Matt Reeves's The Batman. Margot Robbie famously played Harley Quinn in the last few DCEU projects. The newly rebooted DCU, however, has yet to cast its new Batman, Catwoman, or Harley Quinn (as the Reeves projects live in what's called Elseworlds, a separate universe that runs in tandem with the new DCU).

Our Spidey-senses are tingling: Tom Holland has revealed how Spider-Man's suit redesign in Brand New Day hits a little closer to home for the wallcrawler. No Way Home, that is.

"When we decided we were going to make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we said: 'What if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey [Maguire] and Andrew [Garfield's] designs?' Because my Peter Parker had met those guys," Holland explained in a new vignette, which you can see below.

"We created a 'Spider-Child' of all three costumes. Everything had to fit in the world of Peter Parker and we went back to that dumpster-diver kid [from Spider-Man: Homecoming]."

As you can see, there is more raised webbing – fans of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man designs will surely approve – and more pronounced side folds and chest logo, which closely resembles that of Andrew Garfield's Amazing Spider-Man suit.

Brand New Day's Spidey get-up isn't just a blast from the past, however. It's also designed to be practical and feel like someone is actually behind the mask.

"We are embracing the folds and wrinkles when it moves," director Destin Daniel Cretton added. "You can see the human beneath the material."

As the name might suggest, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a do-over on more than just Spidey's sartorial side.

With the world forgetting Spider-Man's secret identity, Peter Parker is pushed into battle with an unseen villain – with Tom Holland teasing that the true Big Bad hasn't yet been revealed. In the wings, former BFF Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) has launched his Spidey-Tracker and former flame MJ (Zendaya) once again enters Peter's orbit…

Spider-Man also has to contend with Jon Bernthal's The Punisher, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, and an unknown character played by Sadie Sink, who may or may not be Jean Grey. Let's hope Pete has made backups of his suit.

As we get closer to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it looks like Marvel fans are opening a debate on the villain of the second MCU Spidey movie: Mysterio.

In Far From Home, Mysterio, AKA Quentin Beck, poses as a friendly figure for Peter Parker, but it's all a ruse to steal Tony Stark's glasses and fake being a hero to get revenge on the late Iron Man. He uses sophisticated illusion techniques to fool the world and sets up pretend battles, and he even exposes Peter's identity to the world.

But, one fan is wondering what Mysterio would have done if he had to face a serious villain. "Did Mysterio not anticipate the fact that if he succeeded with his plan, what would he do if he faced off against a real threat??" they post on Reddit. "Like bro had a mocap suit and drone illusions, I don't think bro would've used that in public, lol."

They add: "Let's be fair. In the eyes of the public, he defeated an enormous threat which were The Elementals. Ofc he managed to do that because they were fake, but what if an actual threat happened and the world would've wanted him to fight against. Is he an idiot or what?"

Some fans, though, think there's a simple explanation. "Pretty sure he’d just use his drones to support him in the fight, kinda like he did to Peter with all the illusions," says one person, while another says: "People forget the drones weren't just projectors, they were armed Stark drones. If Quentin had leaned into the tech side instead of pretending to be Doctor Strange, he'd actually be a pretty serious threat."

"In the end he would've had the whole technology of Tony Stark at his disposal, basically. And with just what he already had he was fairly dangerous. The drones he had been using already had a respectable amount of destructive power on their own," says another fan.

Someone else argues Mysterio, who was pretending to be from another universe, would have simply disappeared. "Wasn't part of his whole fake backstory was that was from another universe? He would have just 'went back' when he finished what he set out to accomplish. No actual long term plan," they say.

"He wouldn't get involved," says someone else. "My guess is that he would have found a way to fake his death or something," is another person's thoughts.

"I think he would have just conveniently been busy whenever a threat he couldn’t deal with showed up. Probably not a great plan long term," guesses another person.

Mysterio died in the Far From Home ending, so it's a moot point anyway. Next up, Peter will face off against a so far unseen foe in Brand New Day.

Comedy star Danny McBride has given a promising update on his G.I. Joe movie over at Paramount, and says it could start filming next year.

"I've written one. I'm stoked about it. I'm really fired up about the script," Said McBride to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "Paramount seems fired up about it. So hopefully we're shooting it next year."

Created by Hasbro in the '60s, the G.I. Joe franchise revolves around a special mission force battling against a terrorist organization known as Cobra. The Pineapple Express star revealed that he has been a G.I. Joe fan since childhood. "It was definitely the cartoons and the comics. G.I. Joe was my thing when I was a kid. I liked that more than Star Wars, more than anything," added McBride. "I still have all the characters."

However, the star didn't initially plan to make a movie about Joe right off the bat. "I had an idea for a Dreadnoks movie," said McBride. "So I went to Paramount and pitched it, and they were like, 'Well, the franchise kind of needs to be like it needs to be launched, so we can't come out with a Dreadnoks movie. Would you have an angle for a G.I. Joe project?' And I was like, 'Hell yeah, I'll have an angle for that.'"

In the G.I. Joe world, Dreadnoks are a group of mercenaries and thieves who work for various villainous groups, including Cobra. However, it sounds as though the Dreadnoks may still show up in McBride's G.I. Joe movie. The star revealed, "You're following Duke and a group of other Joes. There's that town in the comic, Springfield, which is a town that's secretly all Cobra, and so that is where our film takes place."

McBride penned the script with his Righteous Gemstones collaborators Jeff Bradley and John Couture. "We sat down, and we cracked something that we really love a lot," added the Tropic Thunder star. But just because McBride is known for his funny bone, he says the new film "weirdly grounds G.I. Joe. It's not a comedy; it's like kind of suspense and action. I think it's going to be a lot of fun."

McBride didn't give any casting details away, but he did tease, "We have some pretty interesting people lining up to be in it… it looks like it's going to be pretty fun." Well, if G.I. Joe can replicate the success of Barbie, McBride is onto a winner.

The Batman 2 screenwriter Mattson Tomlin has one of the most anticipated upcoming comic book movies in production, but despite this fact, Tomlin says he's fielding more offers for video game adaptations than superhero fare this year.

Speaking on Twitter, Tomlin – the co-writer of The Batman Part 2 alongside director Matt Reeves – responded to a question about his Mega Man adaptation falling by the wayside by noting that the project could come back around because video game adaptations are now all the rage in Tinseltown.

"Hollywood is sort of making a shift from being comic book obsessed to video game obsessed," Tomlin says. "So I wouldn’t be surprised if [Mega Man] sees the light of day in some form, but after so much time gone by, it’s unlikely I’ll have anything to do with it."

Tomlin further clarified his reasoning in another response: "My point of view is also born out of the fact that I am getting at least 5x more offers for video game adaptations than comic book adaptations this year." While Tomlin is speaking from anecdotal experience rather than offering empirical evidence of a sweeping change in Hollywood, the fact that video game adaptations are of increasing importance to moviedom is plain to see.

Already this year, Return to Silent Hill, Iron Lung, Exit 8 and Mortal Kombat 2 have all released in theaters, to varying degrees of success. Still to come are Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie, Street Fighter, and anime shows Sekiro: No Defeat and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2. Truly, the video game adaptation boom is upon us. Even the likes of A24 are getting in on the trend: the indie studio has a big-budget Elden Ring movie currently filming from Alex Garland, and A Quiet Place: Day One's Michael Sarnoski is adapting Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, though it'll be a different story from the games.

In comparison, comic book cinema is at perhaps its lowest ebb in almost two decades. Supergirl just bombed, making less than Morbius and Joker 2 in its opening weekend, and this month's Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the first Marvel movie in a year, though don't be surprised if it kills at the box office.

As for The Batman 2, the highly anticipated sequel sits outside James Gunn's DCU Chapter One as an Elseworlds entry. The movie is currently in pre-production, with filming set to begin imminently ahead of a 2027 release. Matt Reeves recently lifted the lid on the movie's cast, including Marvel stars Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson, but we still don't know for sure who they're playing.

Matt Smith says he can't believe Keanu Reeves watched the Sony-Marvel flop Morbius... but I absolutely can.

"Not f**king Morbius. My God, he must really have gone through the library to be getting to that. He must have been having a moment," Smith said on an episode of Brittany Broski's Royal Court, after Broski told him Reeves was reportedly seen watching the movie on a flight.

Before expressing his disbelief, Smith sang the actor's praises: "I love Keanu Reeves... what a movie star. And [he] just looks like an angel, you know what I mean? Like if you were to get a guardian angel in life, please God, let it be Keanu Reeves."

The 2022 movie follows Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) and his surrogate brother Milo (Smith) as they search for a cure for their rare blood disease. Morbius develops and takes the cure and immediately becomes a living vampire. He refuses to give it to Milo, who takes it anyway and becomes super evil (and does a fun little evil dance in one scene). The film earned $167.5 million worldwide against a budget of 83 million, and currently sits at 15% on Rotten Tomatoes (though the audience score is a much higher 71%).

Morbius went viral for being bad – so bad, in fact, that they decided to capitalize on the memes and re-release it in theaters for a short time. I'm not surprised that Reeves decided to check it out on a long flight, especially given his penchant for action-horror comic books (of which he's penned a few).

Millie Bobby Brown has revealed that she auditioned to play X-23 in the 2017 movie Logan.

"I screentested with Hugh Jackman when I was like, 11 or 12," Brown said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, as she played Two Truths and a Lie with Enola Holmes 3 co-star Louis Partridge. "I felt like I probably didn't get it, because I think there was someone else that was better."

Added Brown: "It's true, and it was for Logan."

Given that Logan came out in 2017 and Stranger Things came out in 2016, it's likely that both projects shot around the same time... and that the role of Eleven could've gone to another actor had Brown gotten the role in Logan. The role of X-23 ultimately went to Dafne Keen.

Logan, directed by James Mangold, saw Hugh Jackman's Wolverine living in a distant future where mutants were next-to-extinct. He runs into a young girl known only as X-23, and the two develop a father-daughter sort of bond as he attempts to protect her from the dark forces that are out to get her. Keen would reprise the role in Deadpool and Wolverine, thanks to a wild multiverse plotline that allowed Mangold's Logan to stay dead and another Logan to step up to the plate.

Brown can be seen in Enola Holmes 3, which is streaming now on Netflix. Next up for Marvel is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is out on July 31, and Avengers: Doomsday which hits theaters on December 18... though we don't know if Jackman is set to appear in the latter.

James Gunn, perhaps more than most directors, has his favorites. From his brother Sean Gunn, to long-time collaborators Michael Rooker, Steve Agee, and Nathan Fillion, the DC Studios boss has long populated his casts with both friends and family.

Now, Jennifer Holland, wife of Gunn and an actor in her own right, most notably as Emilia Harcourt in Peacemaker, has revealed why the Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy director surrounds himself with so many familiar faces.

"It really just comes about because James loves to have his friends and family around him all the time," Holland explained to CinemaBlend. "It's hard to make movies; it's lonely. You're stuck in a place that's not your home for a very long period of time."

Holland added, "You don't have all of your friends and family with you, so as much as he can include friends and family in his movies, he tries. That gives them an excuse to be around and he really thrives on that. As much as he is a loner when it comes to sitting in an office, typing on his computer… he really is inspired by and revived by true relationships."

To that end, Gunn has even based the look and mannerisms of Krypto on his own rescue dog, Ozu.

Next up for Gunn is Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to Superman, which is currently filming.

Speaking to GamesRadar+ in a separate interview, Holland teased the movie as perhaps Gunn's finest work yet.

"I can tell you that I have seen an enormous, enormous portion of the movie, and I am so excited for Man of Tomorrow," Holland said at a screening of upergirl. "It is different...I don't wanna say this. Ugh. It might be James's best… my favorite movie of James, and I haven't even seen the whole thing yet. I love the movie. I'm really excited about it. It feels like a step up to me in a lot of ways. I'm excited for people to see it, and he's not done filming it yet."

Man of Tomorrow, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Milly Alcock, and more, flies into cinemas on July 9, 2027.

There's no studio more secretive than Marvel. Case in point – Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Sadie Sink reportedly wasn't given a script until she landed in London to shoot the Spidey sequel.

In a new conversation with Nylon, the culture brand claims that despite being offered the (still mysterious) role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day without an audition, the Stranger Things alum "didn't receive a script until she landed in London."

It's not clear if Sink read a script prior to receiving her own copy, as Sink isn't quoted directly on the matter in the piece, but either way, it's further evidence that Marvel is taking no chances in letting the secrets of Brand New Day slip before it releases at the end of the month.

Despite the second Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer leaking a week before it eventually dropped online, Marvel Studios and Sony have done a good job keeping the movie's finer details in the shadows. We still don't actually know who Sink is playing in the movie. All the signs point to future member of the X-Men, Jean Grey, but we have our own theories as well.

Sink, not realizing how much speculation there would be, has spent the bulk of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour so far on deflection duty, fending off questions about the identity of her mystery character. Over eight years on Stranger Things at least prepped her for the responsibility of staying schtum, with Sink telling Nylon that the key to keeping a secret is: “You just don’t share the secret. It’s not that hard.” Tom Holland, take note.

With less than a month to go till Brand New Day releases, Holland recently revealed that the movie's ultimate villain is still a secret. "The villain that we have in this new movie, which is still very much a secret, is, I think, unlike anything we've seen in one of these movies before."

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is the first film shot from start to finish in full-frame IMAX – a landmark moment for the premium large format of choice. And it turns out Nolan had been dreaming about making a movie this way since he was just 16 years old.

Speaking to Pay or Wait over on YouTube, Nolan explained how the process of shooting The Odyssey on IMAX film has evolved even since his experience making Oppenheimer just a few years ago. But he also revealed a fascinating tidbit about his first encounter with IMAX 40 years ago.

"It's something I've really wanted to do since I was 16 and I first saw an IMAX film at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago," Nolan recalls. "I was like, 'Well, why can't you make a dramatic feature, an action film, an adventure film this way, because the format is so incredible.'"

Now, you might be thinking: "Isn't IMAX a recent thing?" Not exactly. The company was founded in 1967, and first developed IMAX theatre projection standards in the late 60s and early 70s. So IMAX has been around for almost 60 years at this stage. For decades, however, it was the reserve of documentaries and experiential shorts; releasing Hollywood movies in the IMAX format is a more recent development. The first theatrical movie released in IMAX was Fantasia 2000 in, well, 2000, while the 2003 Matrix sequels were among the first live-action movies to go through the IMAX process.

Nolan saw the future at a very young age, then, and finally realized his dream with The Dark Knight in 2008 – the first of his movies to feature sequences shot for IMAX screens. Now, he's practically synonymous with IMAX, with Oppenheimer and The Odyssey selling out on IMAX screens across the UK and US, particularly in the very few theaters globally equipped to project the film in IMAX 70mm.

As for the decision to shoot one of his movies entirely on IMAX film for the first time, Nolan says The Odyssey was a story that justified the challenge. "It's like, we're going to make a film of The Odyssey. That's the movie… if ever you were going to film a story completely on IMAX, you know, this is the story to do it with."

With The Odyssey now a little over two weeks away, interviews have started to trickle out from Nolan and his cast. Speaking to the New York Times last month, Nolan made an interesting comparison between Matt Damon's Odysseus and a key Star Wars character. "Odysseus is a very complex character – a trickster, somebody who's smart and wily. In Star Wars terms, it's Han Solo – but Han Solo is not the hero of Star Wars, it's Luke Skywalker."

It doesn't look like things re going to get much better for Supergirl, as after a disappointing opening weekend, the new DCU movie is expected to drop even further at the box office during its second weekend on the big screen.

As reported by Variety, Supergirl is expected to make just $15 million over its second weekend in theaters. That's a 60% decline in ticket sales from its first weekend.

Supergirl had a rough start after hitting screens on June 26. The DC movie debuted to just $37.1 million, even lower than recent superhero flops Morbius and Joker 2. In fact, Supergirl marks the lowest opening for a DC movie since Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which opened to a measly $27.6 million in December 2023. After its theatrical run, the sequel failed to make back its budget once marketing and theatrical revenue splits are accounted for.

2023 was a rather bleak year for DC Studios, as in addition to the Aquaman sequel blunder, the studio saw a number of flops, including The Flash, which opened to $55 million, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which opened to $30 million, and Blue Beetle, which debuted to an even lower $25 million. Soon after, James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought on board as co-heads to shake up the studio.

Let's hope Gunn's DCU Chapter One doesn't face the same fate, as Supergirl is only the second movie released under the new banner after 2025's Superman, which went down a lot better with fans. The studio has yet to release Clayface this September, before Man of Tomorrow hits screens next year.

As for Supergirl, if box office predictions are right, it doesn't look like the film will be able to make back its $170 million budget, which doesn't account for the tens of millions more spent on marketing. The film has earned $67.7 million worldwide so far.

There's no denying that Supergirl is currently flopping at the box office, but following yesterday's initial results, the DCU movie's opening weekend take has been confirmed, and it's actually doing worse than we first thought.

On Monday, June 29, many outlets reported that Supergirl had earned $38 million in the US over opening weekend. However, now it looks like the superhero film only scraped $37.1 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

That means that Milly Alcock's first outing as Kara Zor-El is not only doing worse than Sony's Spider-Man spin-off Morbius, which is widely known as one of the worst superhero movies ever, but also DC's Joker 2. Officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel opened to $37.6 million and scored a measly 31% on Rotten Tomatoes.

This is a pretty hard knock for James Gunn's new DC, as Supergirl is just the second movie in DCU Chapter One. But, the team still seems confident in their overall plan. On June 28, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran made a statement, telling The New York Times, "While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it's just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in."

It is not clear why Supergirl is flopping so hard. Yes, it is true that the movie has opened to mixed reviews, and is not as widely loved as last year's Superman, which opened to $125 million domestically and went on to gross over $618 million worldwide. But the film's mediocre 56% score on RT is not the worst in the world. However, many fans are complaining about the lacklustre storyline and one questionable needle drop.

If Supergirl continues to underperform in this way, it will prove to be a loss for the studio. The movie cost around $170 million to make and perhaps tens of millions more to market, which means that the film will have to see a pretty steep incline in ticket sales over the coming weeks. But at this point, that seems unlikely.

Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nogueira appears to have misinterpreted the ending of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, resulting in a very different fate for a major villain.

Warning: Major spoilers for Supergirl below!

"The ending between Kara and Krem was always in it, from the pitch, truly from the very beginning," Nogueira told Variety. "Because the comic ends with Ruthye killing him, but in the far, far future. We knew we weren’t gonna be able to do that kind of time jump, and I find it’s quite a dark ending of the comic. He essentially has changed, and she kills him anyway, because she still just has this anger, and you understand there’s this element of deserve, right?

"So, we wanted to craft a villain who would deserve this, but we also wanted Kara to really care about preserving Ruthye’s innocence, and to feel like she could take on [killing him], that she could be the one to bring justice to this man, and do it without burdening this child. It’s different for Supergirl, and I think it will feel different for audiences."

The new DC movie is based on the eight-issue limited comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. At the end of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #8, Ruthye appears to hit Krem over the head with her cane and leave him there alive.

Woman of Tomorrow writer Tom King confirmed this in a 2024 podcast, stating, "This is not supposed to be ambiguous. He’s supposed to be alive at the end. That’s why he grabs his head. Ruthye does not forgive him, still f***ing hates him, bops him on the head, and walks away" (via ComicBookMovie). You can check out the panel below.

The new movie, which marks the second feature-length entry in the rebooted DCU, currently sits at a 54% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, though the audience score is at a much higher 76%. Milly Alcock will appear again as Kara Zor-El in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is set to hit theaters in 2027.

Spider-Man star Tom Holland wants to see Miles Morales make his MCU debut.

While Miles is the main character of the animated Spider-Verse movies – and his uncle, played by Donald Glover, appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming – he has never appeared in the live-action MCU.

"I think at this point in time, we're being really open minded about what the future looks like," Holland told Hobby Consolas. "I know that I have aspirations to bring Miles Morales into the universe, however that works out. We've got a lot of work to do to bring that to life.

"But, yeah, I feel really strongly about – I feel incredibly grateful for the way I was introduced into this world and that I was shepherded by RDJ [Robert Downey Jr.]," he continued. "And I would love to kind of return that favor to the next generation of people that get the luxury of making these movies. So, that is definitely something that I'm really working towards."

This isn't the first time Holland has shared such a sentiment, either. "For whoever's next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter," he previously commented. "Whatever that looks like, I don't know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset."

Holland will next play Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring opposite the likes of Jon Bernthal's Punisher, Mark Ruffalo's Hulk, and Sadie Sink's mystery character (though Marvel fans are convinced she's playing Jean Grey).

Debates over Supergirl's divisive needle drop went down to the "very last week" according to director Craig Gillespie.

The moment in question, during Supergirl's final act, features a Kelty Greye cover of 'The Middle' by Jimmy Eat World, a much slower tempo version of the song that audiences largely felt were at odds with the tone of the scene and the movie as a whole.

"There were a lot of options," Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira told Rolling Stone, with Gillespie revealing that "there were probably about 45 songs that went against that scene."

Gillespie said, "That was probably the biggest discussion. And it was down to the very last week, and I gotta give James [Gunn] credit for that one." He added that "a remix of a classic" was also a runner-up for the soundtracked scene – but didn't say what it was.

Reacting to the news, Greye wrote on Instagram, "As a proud nerd who was raised on superhero movies, this is quite literally a dream come true!"

Gunn, of course, is renowned for his deployment of pop and rock songs in his films, from the '80s-heavy Guardians of the Galaxy to the earworms of Peacemaker's opening titles sequences in its first two seasons. Fans may be less pleased with his contributions here, however.

All told, Supergirl has disappointed in its opening weekend. Its global opening of $68 million has led DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran to release a statement.

Safran told The New York Times, "While Supergirl didn't meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in."

Hideo Kojima has returned with another film review, and it looks like a pretty positive verdict on Supergirl.

The DC movie has disappointed at the box office so far, but it certainly seems to have the Kojima seal of approval.

"I saw Supergirl in IMAX. It wasn't a 'superhero movie' about saving the Earth through self-sacrifice as 'justice' confronts 'evil.' It was a coming-of-age story about saving oneself, Kara, as she struggles with her own trauma," he wrote on Twitter. "Structurally, it feels less like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), where everyone is driven purely by survival instinct beyond notions of good and evil, and more like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), where heroes, villains, and scoundrels all converge."

Now, a typical rule of thumb for Kojima's reviews is that, the longer the review, the more positively he feels about the movie or show. His Madame Web review, for example, was just six words long – while he never actually posted his review of The Electric State, which might be even worse.

Plus, Kojima appears to have followed Supergirl actor Milly Alcock on Instagram, as spotted by a fan.

The film debuted to just $68 million worldwide, lower than notorious flop Morbius's $84 million opening weekend.

The film also scored poorly on Rotten Tomatoes, earning the first rotten score for the DCU. After debuting to mixed reviews and landing a mediocre 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Supergirl went on to earn just $38 million in the US over opening weekend, and a further $30 million internationally. That is pretty disappointing for DC, and is even lower than 2022 Spider-Man spin-off, Morbius, which opened to $39 million.

It is not clear at this point whether Supergirl will prove to be a loss for the studio. The movie cost around $170 million to make, with tens of millions more spent to market the movie worldwide. However, there is no doubt that Supergirl is off to a bad start. Just last year, Superman opened to $125 million domestically and went on to gross over $618 million worldwide against a predicted $350 million production and marketing budget.

So, why is Supergirl flopping so hard? There's no doubt that the new film is receiving a lot of flak online, with many viewers complaining about the pacing and one questionable needle drop. But many superhero fans are enjoying Milly Alcock's debut as Kara Zor-El. In our Supergirl review, we awarded the new DCU movie 3.5 out of 5 stars, saying, "Supergirl earns its Guardians of the Galaxy and Mad Max comparisons with a surprisingly dark space adventure about revenge and finding your home."

However, no matter how Supergirl fares, the DCU lives on, as there are already several projects in the works. Next up, HBO show Lanterns will take us on a True Detective-like adventure, and just in time for Halloween, the DCU will deliver its first horror movie, Clayface. Plus, filming has already started on the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

It feels a little ridiculous to talk about the new movie Supergirl and not discuss the titular character. But with the latest DCU flick now in theaters, all eyes won’t just be on the Maid of Might – they'll be on the Main Man, Lobo, played by Jason Momoa. And thankfully, the actor's long audition as Aquaman in the DCEU properly prepared him for the role Momoa was born to play.

Is that unfair to say about a role Momoa played multiple times, in multiple movies (and TV shows)? Perhaps. Except, ever since the actor was announced as playing Arthur Curry way back in 2014, it seemed like an odd fit. Sure, he had played a ruler before on Game of Thrones, but the monosyllabic Khal Drogo was a far cry from any iteration of Aquaman we had seen before in the comic book source material, let alone his appearances in animated TV shows and live-action on Smallville.

Yet Momoa proceeded to make the role his own from a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, all the way through the cockroach-crunching end of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But the problem was that Momoa bent Aquaman his way into a brash, joke-slinging bad-ass who shouts "my man," gets into bar fights, and is more Momoa than Curry.

That may not entirely be an issue, because Momoa was one of the highlights of the controversial DCEU/Zack Snyder era, despite his every move seeming to be designed to specifically push back at anyone who made fun of Aquaman for talking to fish. This Aquaman was cool. He was a muscle-bound beefcake. He drinks and fights, and if you say he's anything less than rad, he will beat you up. But it also, curiously, seemed antithetical to what Aquaman is supposed to be.

Ride or die

Which is why this all makes a lot more sense once you realize Momoa was merely paving the way for Lobo. Unlike his Fast & Furious franchise cohort Dwayne Johnson – who attempted his own hostile takeover of the DC cinematic franchise and took Henry "I would just love to play Warhammer 40k if you don't mind" Cavill down with him – Momoa managed to pivot one of the more successful turns in the DCEU into his dream role in the DCU. Reportedly, the very morning James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the new heads of DC Studios, Momoa texted Gunn two words: "Fucking Lobo." And Gunn somehow interpreted that mysterious text correctly and agreed, stating that he thought Momoa should have been Lobo for years.

It's clear that through the auditions for Batman and casting as Aquaman, what Momoa really wanted was Lobo. And it's such a better fit, as Momoa basically is Lobo, without the immortality and bloodthirstiness. The Czarnian bounty hunter, created in 1983 by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, is what it says on the tin, but it wasn't until the ‘90s that the character found his niche as a commentary on the over-the-top dark and gritty superhero trend kicked off in part by characters like Wolverine at Marvel and Batman at DC. Momoa himself is like a walking, talking human parody, with his scraggly beard, wild hair, and 6'4 height. He's a wild man who looks like he'd accept an invitation to party any day, any time.

That's Lobo, and that's exactly what Momoa captures on screen with Supergirl. Yes, he physically looks like the character walked off the comic book page, thanks only in small part to black and white makeup, red eyes, and sharp teeth. But honestly, Momoa's inherent physicality does the majority of the work. And his delivery, delighted to see ultra-violence, taking no guff, and coaching a young girl to kill people, feels so much more natural coming out of Lobo than any of Momoa's dialogue did with Aquaman.

The main event

Lobo's the perfect loose cannon running through the new DCU movie, and given his relatively scant screen time, the next question is: when will we see Lobo again? A lot of that potentially depends on how Supergirl does at the box office this weekend – all signs point to "not great" – but Momoa has taken the Lobo ball this far, it's hard to believe his dreams of being the Main Man will stop here, particularly as the actor has the strength of will that would make a Green Lantern jealous.

It's entirely possible Lobo could stop by in the already filming Man of Tomorrow, whether in a cameo or another expanded supporting role, a la Supergirl. But it's tricky to say beyond that because, given James Gunn's laudable unwillingness to greenlight projects before scripts are ready, there are… Not a lot of projects greenlit.

One option? The in-development Wonder Woman reboot, which boasts Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira as screenwriter. While it would be a little weird to see Lobo only pop up as a supporting character in movies with a main, female character, given Nogueira already figured out a way to fuse Lobo into the story from comic book creators Tom King and Bilquis Evely, who is to say she couldn't do the same for Diana?

Lobo would also fit well in the already filmed Lanterns on HBO, given Lobo often tangles with the GLs in the comics. Or he could show up in whatever is following up on the prison planet plotline of Sanctuary from Season 2 of Peacemaker… We've already seen Lobo in jail once, and John Cena is yet another ex-pat from the Fast & Furious franchise Momoa could tangle with. Heck, they were supposed to be in a movie called Killer Vacation together, which we haven't heard a peep about since 2022. So this might be a way of finally getting the duo to team up.

Look, wherever Momoa goes as Lobo next, this is already a much more natural fit than Aquaman, and it's likely audiences will respond positively (regardless of the Supergirl movie's box office fate). So let’s make sure it isn't another decade before we get to see mo' Momoa in the role he was meant to play. Ya bastiches.

Peacemaker star Jennifer Holland has set the bar pretty high for Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.

"I can tell you that I have seen an enormous, enormous portion of the movie, and I am so excited for Man of Tomorrow," Holland tells GamesRadar+ at a screening of Supergirl. "It is different...I don't wanna say this. Ugh. It might be James's best… my favorite movie of James, and I haven't even seen the whole thing yet. I'm just... I love the movie. I'm really excited about it. It feels like a step up to me in a lot of ways. I'm excited for people to see it, and he's not done filming it yet."

Holland also added that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 might be her favorite Gunn movie... and with the implication that Man of Tomorrow might be even better than Guardians 3, I will absolutely be seated. No word yet if the actor will make an appearance as Emilia Harcourt in the Superman sequel, though that seems to be the rumor, given that we don't know if a third season of Peacemaker will happen.

Man of Tomorrow, written and directed by James Gunn, sees David Corenswet's Superman and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor team up to take down supervillain Braniac, played by Babylon Berlin star Lars Eidinger. Supergirl is also set to make an appearance.

As a superhero movie-loving teenager, I had to be content with the fact that not many of my favorite films featured women in top billing. The closest I got during the early 2010s was Black Widow in Iron Man 2, who was a great hero, but felt very catered to the male gaze in that black catsuit…

Don't get me wrong, I still loved watching Iron Man, Captain America, and the Avengers movies. But something always felt missing: where was my version of a kick-ass hero? And where was one who wasn't in a skin-tight suit – and who wasn't constantly being asked in the press about losing weight to fit into said skin-tight suit, for that matter?

Things have started to shift in the past decade, with the release of Wonder Woman, Black Widow's standalone movie, Birds of Prey, and the Captain Marvel films. However, for me, nothing has quite captured my imagination in the way that the DCU's new Supergirl has.

Blasting onto the theater screen in a Blondie T-shirt to an incredible soundtrack, Milly Alcock's new take on Kara Zor-El has immediately become one of my favorite superheroes – and the fact she fronts such a female-led genre movie has healed something in my inner teenager.

Flawed and funny

Written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl is based on Tom King's comic book run 'Woman of Tomorrow' and tells the story of a young girl called Ruthye whose whole family is killed by villain Krem. This sets her on a mission of revenge and she recruits Kara Zor-El along the way after her dog Krypto is caught in the crossfire and poisoned by Krem.

The premise sets up what those involved have called a "road movie", starring two women as the co-leads and focusing almost exclusively on their story. They're complex characters too, especially Alcock's Kara. Sick of living in the shadow of her "nerd" cousin Superman, we first meet her partying her life away on planets with red suns.

She doesn't have much figured out and she has a lot of trauma from her planet's destruction that she hasn't yet dealt with. As the movie's director Craig Gillespie told us in a recent interview, "She's complex, she's flawed, she's an anti-hero that's rebellious, and she's been through trauma – and that's bizarrely such human traits that you can recognize within yourself."

Alcock brings a lot of heart to the character, embodying all of these things pitch-perfectly, while also being, quite frankly, extremely cool. Not only does she have some awesome powers, but she's more often than not rocking up to a great soundtrack and proving to the many aliens she encounters that they're wrong to underestimate her.

Through her relationship with the young Ruthye, she also really grows throughout the film. Their dynamic forces her to recognise different character traits that she's been holding onto and allows her to navigate her own traumatic past a little better. By giving her someone to care for, she also relates a bit more to her well-meaning cousin, too, setting up a new dynamic with Clark Kent going forward in the DCU.

It's a complex arc and one that is handled thoroughly and satisfyingly by Alcock and Nogueira's script. There are male characters – most notably Matthias Schoenaerts' Krem and Jason Momoa's Lobo – but they are secondary to the story, and thankfully there is not even a whiff of a romantic storyline to be found in Supergirl.

Instead, the meat of the movie is all about its female leads, and even the subplots tackle feminist issues. There's a nasty underlying threat when the pair arrive on Bilquis where young girls are being trafficked as brides for the Brigands, giving extra weight to Kara and Ruthye's fight against Krem.

A new era

There's something to be said about the fact that the second film release in James Gunn and Peter Safran's hugely anticipated DCU is a female-led story. There have been little to no conversations about whether this is a risky strategy or what it could mean for the box office from the co-CEOs, as they have instead fully embraced the importance of women in the creation of their new superhero world.

Not only this, but the investment is already there in Alcock. Aside from her solo movie, she's already signed up for two more movies. As producer Lars P. Winther told The Hollywood Reporter: "So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that."

It feels like what Gunn and Safran are doing with the DCU is righting the wrongs that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had to claw its way out of in more recent years. Female-led stories and interesting female characters are being woven into this new universe right from the beginning, not as an afterthought.

This all makes me so excited for young superhero-loving women today who get to grow up feeling part of these universes right from the start. I hope that Supergirl's ascent heralds a new era for this on-screen and based on the upcoming slate for the DCU, which features a new story for Wonder Woman on the roster, it's looking positive.

The second movie in James Gunn's DCU Chapter One has now hit screens worldwide, but one film critic has revealed that he was shown a cut of Supergirl at a screen test at the start of the year that included more scenes that didn't make the cut.

Warning: the following contains a few spoilers, so turn back now if you haven't seen the film. But make sure to read our Supergirl review first.

"The cut wasn’t very different than the one I saw earlier this week. Besides more scenes on Krypton and an alternate opening, it was the same film," said The Film Frontier's Dan Marcus on Twitter. Krem had more of his backstory cut from the finished film, though."

In the final cut, we first meet Krem as a murderous pirate scavenging for goods and collecting young women as brides to sell on his home planet. However, the movie doesn't really explain why he is the way he is. But according to Marcus, the test screen cut shone a light on Krem's motives. "He talked about how he was abused as a child, but how that upbringing made him stronger," said Marcus. "He revealed he was going to do the same with Ruthye, threatening to make her his wife."

According to Marcus, the original movie "started with the destruction of Krypton," rather than Supergirl waking up in her ship, followed by the harrowing scene showing Krem murdering Ruthye's family. But not all is lost, as the new cut added two more scenes featuring David Corenswet’s Superman, which we think will be important in the future as Supergirl kind of sets up the Superman sequel, 2027's Man of Tomorrow.

However, it doesn't sound as though we missed out on much, as Marcus confirmed the cut he saw was only around 10-15 minutes longer than the final product, and still had no Supergirl post-credits scene. Despite saying the original opening was "better," he added, "The finished film didn’t feel that much different than the cut I saw in February."

So, why did DC cut the movie down even further when it would have still been under 2 hours to begin with? In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Craig Gillespie said, "I hate a long film. Because it’s this road trip between two women [Milly Alcock and Eve Ridley]... The more that we kept it lean and true to just their mission, the better the film was. There is a ticking clock in this."

Matt Damon's Odysseus is more of a Han Solo than a Luke Skywalker, according to Christopher Nolan.

The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus's long journey home from the Trojan war, which brings him up against fantastical threats like a cyclops, sirens, and a vicious whirlpool in the ocean.

"When I finished the film I was quite struck by that. Every film I do, I like to leave it with questions or unanswered themes that I might carry through to the next film," Nolan told The New York Times, when asked about parallels between Oppenheimer and Odysseus's characters. "There's a lot of ideas of leadership, of mixed motivations, the flaws of people, that idea of where the best of intentions can go horribly wrong. Odysseus is a very complex character – a trickster, somebody who's smart and wily. In Star Wars terms, it's Han Solo – but Han Solo is not the hero of Star Wars, it's Luke Skywalker."

Starring opposite Damon are Anne Hathaway as Odysseus's wife Penelope, Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as one of Penelope's suitors Antinous, Zendaya as the goddess Athena, Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy, Jon Bernthal as her husband Menelaus, and Benny Safdie as his brother and leader of the Greek army Agamemnon.

"Every location we would get there and I would just start laughing like, 'Who thought you should shoot a movie here?'" Damon has said of working with Nolan on the movie. "You know, we're shooting in Nestor's Cave in Greece. It's this incredible place but nobody's ever tried to shoot a film up there. So to see the rigging that they did to basically turn it into a natural sound stage, I don't know any other director who would try it."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day may not be far away from arriving in theaters but a lot is still unknown about the latest entry in the webbed franchise. Understandably, this has led to a whole load of theorizing from Marvel fans, keen to try and work out what exactly the Marvel Phase 6 movie's big surprises are – and it turns out some of them are actually right.

"Some of the wildest fan theories are like weirdly accurate to what is happening in the movie," Holland told Vanity Fair France. "I feel like I don't want to give any fuel to the flames before the movie comes out." Holland, who has given away some pretty big reveals in the past then added when he was pushed on which ones, "I can't my lips are sealed."

Zendaya agreed, adding to the publication that some fans have been absolutely "spot on" with their ideas. "What Tom and I enjoy is looking at people's fan theories and thinking some are spot on, some are really far off and some have really great ideas," she added. "I'm not sure I can think of any off the top of my head but people are very creative. "

Now, we're racking our brains about what theories Holland and Zendaya might be referring to here as a lot of mysteries still exist around the movie. Chief among them are two questions: who is Sadie Sink playing and who is the movie's main villain?

A lot of speculation, ever since the Stranger Things star was announced, have suggested that Sink will be playing X-Men star Jean Grey. However, the latest trailer only showed a glimpse at her character and it's still not entirely clear who exactly she is.

Meanwhile, Holland recently confirmed that the movie's final villain still has not been confirmed. "The villain that we have in this new movie, which is still very much a secret, is, I think, unlike anything we've seen in one of these movies before," Holland teased to ProSieben.

There are plenty of adversaries that have been teased, including The Hand, Scorpion, Tombstone, Boomerang, Tarantula, and Ramrod. However, it seems none of these will be the main big bad that Holland's Spidey will face.

The reviews are in for Supergirl, and the new film is the first DCU movie to get a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.

That's a feat that took the MCU 13 years and 26 movies: it wasn't until 2021's Eternals that the Rotten Tomatoes score dipped below fresh.

Supergirl currently stands at a rotten score of 57% with 151 reviews. That might change if more reviews come in, of course, but it seems unlikely to cross the 60% fresh threshold, since most reviews are likely live by now (Supergirl previously moved up to a fresh score after debuting in the rotten zone, but dipped back down soon after).

Our own Supergirl review awards the movie 3.5 stars, and our verdict reads: "Superman's messier younger cousin in every way, Supergirl earns its Guardians of the Galaxy and Mad Max comparisons with a surprisingly dark (and sometimes downright gross) space adventure about revenge and finding your home."

Supergirl is only the second DCU movie, so this is an unfortunate milestone to hit so early. Superman stands at a healthier 83%, while Creature Commandos is at 95%, and Peacemaker season 2 is at 94%.

The film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, who teams up with youngster Ruthye on a quest to save her dog Krypto after he is poisoned by the sadistic brigand Krem.

But, the future still looks bright for Kara. She's confirmed to appear in Man of Tomorrow, a sort-of-sequel to Superman, and she has another confirmed appearance after that, too.

"So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie's going to be after that, and she's a big part of that," executive producer Lars P. Winther shared recently.

The second movie in DCU Chapter One is finally here. But, although Supergirl is a standalone movie, it does technically follow on from last year's Superman. But does it set up the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow?

Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the new movie picks up around a year after Superman, as Supergirl celebrates her 23rd birthday with more partying. But the hero is soon pulled out of her rut when tragedy strikes too close to home, putting her dog Krypto in grave danger. She must join forces with unlikely companions Jason Momoa's Lobo and Eve Ridley's Ruthye for an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

This isn't the first time we have seen Alcock take flight, as the star made her Supergirl debut in Superman, and David Coresnwet returns the favour by making a cameo or two in the new movie. But Superman didn't really set up Supergirl, so does the new movie follow suit? Below, we break down if and how Supergirl sets up Man of Tomorrow. Does Supergirl set up Man of Tomorrow?

Technically speaking, no, Supergirl doesn't really set up Man of Tomorrow in the traditional sense. There is no Supergirl post-credits scene teasing how the Superman sequel starts. Plus, the movie takes place over just three days around Supergirl's 23rd birthday, which would be September 2026 on the DCU timeline. Thanks to James Gunn confirming Man of Tomorrow's timeline, we know it will take place more or less in the present time, in Summer 2027. So, anything could happen in the 10-month gap. However, Supergirl will appear in Man of Tomorrow.

The movie does set up Supergirl's future. Supergirl ends with Kara returning to Earth with Krypto, where she tells her cousin Clark Kent that she is going to stay for a while. Earlier in the movie, we see that Kara didn't take too well to life in Metropolis when she first landed from her home planet, Krypton. After that, she went off on her own into space. But her intergalactic journey hunting Krem must have changed her tune.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl executive producer Lars P. Winther all but confirmed Supergirl will still be earthside in Man of Tomorrow. "Man of Tomorrow, which is what we’re shooting now, [Alcock] is in that movie," said Winther. "[Supergirl] ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based."

Now that Supergirl is on Earth, she can help her cousin fight Brainiac in the upcoming sequel. After all, at the end of the movie, Kent tells Kara that he could have used her help on the "last one." We presume the "one" he is referring to is Lex Luthor.

Supergirl is now out in theaters and given the trend of superhero movies these days, you'll likely be wondering whether or not there is a Supergirl post-credits scene.

This will especially be the case after Superman featured two different stings at the end of its run last year. Well, if you're looking for answers then you're in the right place as below we get into all the details you need to know below.

No, Supergirl does not have a post-credits scene. Unlike Superman, which had a mid-credits and a post-credits sting, the Milly Alcock-led film ends when the credits roll. You're more than welcome to sit through the whole credits though as if you do, you'll be treated to Claudia Sarne's wonderful score.

Why doesn't Supergirl have a post-credits scene?

This is the million-dollar question. It's not quite clear why Supergirl doesn't have a post-credits scene, as it was teased prior to release that it would. Only one month ago director Craig Gillespie confirmed that Supergirl would have a post-credits scene. Speaking to Collider, he did suggest that the film would have one post-credit scene but said he couldn't "tease" its contents.

There have also been some reports that Supergirl did have a post-credits scene during test screenings, but this was removed before the final cut. However, there has been no confirmation on that either way as of yet.

One possibility is that the events of the post-credits scene might have actually worked their way into the main runtime of the movie. This could be the case as the movie's final scene could also have worked as a post-credits scene.

What happens at the end of Supergirl? *SPOILERS*

Given there is no post-credits scene, it's worth diving into the movie's ending a little bit. After celebrating her birthday with Ruthye, Kara Zor-El heads back to Metropolis where she reunites with her cousin, Kal-El – or Clark Kent. She's brought Krypto along with her and has decided that she's keen to stay awhile.

While this doesn't directly set up the events of Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, we do know that Alcock's Supergirl will be involved in that movie. Therefore, the pair teaming up to fight crime across Earth seems to be where the sequel could begin.

Supergirl writer Ana Noguiera has revealed that DCU co-president James Gunn got involved with Superman's appearance in the new DC movie.

"He is protective of Superman," Noguiera confirmed, when asked by Brandon Davis if that was the case. "There is like a couple things in other moments where he was like, 'He wouldn't say that to her.' And I was like, 'Okay cool.' But, mostly we had the same idea."

It makes sense that Gunn would be protective over Kal-El, since he wrote and directed the 2025 film that launched the theatrical side of the DCU.

Superman appears briefly in Supergirl, and he'll next be seen in 2027's Man of Tomorrow. In that film, he'll be forced to team up with his nemesis Lex Luthor in a battle against Braniac.

Supergirl is also set to appear in Man of Tomorrow, and, by the sounds of things, she might be at odds with her cousin Superman.

"I do think that this Supergirl is apart because she's not so much like Superman. She's very, very different from her cousin, which puts them at odds, which is a big part of this movie, and then an even bigger part of Man of Tomorrow, which we're filming now," Gunn has previously teased of the movie.

Supergirl sees Kara Zor-El on a mission to save her dog Krypto from a deadly poison administered by the brigand Krem, while her young companion Ruthye seeks revenge on the same man for slaughtering her family.

More details about Avengers: Endgame's upcoming re-release have been revealed – and it sure sounds like it's tying into Avengers: Doomsday in a big way.

As per Deadline, those watching Endgame in Disney's new 'Infinity Vision' large format will be treated to 'a custom introduction, additional new footage, and a special end tag exclusive to Infinity Vision and IMAX releases.' As if to really hammer home the freshness, Mjolnir-style, Avengers: Endgame's re-release comes with its own special title – Avengers: Endgame Encore.

So, those watching in a regular screening (it's currently unclear as of writing which screens will carry Infinity Vision) won't have the end tag included. Hopefully that doesn't mean audiences will be missing out on what appears to be a major link to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Speaking at Sands Film Festival in April (also via Deadline), Doomsday co-director Joe Russo explained that the re-release would be an "opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way."

Russo added, "You don’t always get the chance to re-release because it costs money, so the fact that we can enhance the story of Doomsday by bridging it to Endgame and these characters that we worked with for years that we love so much, and continue their story: It's a really unique opportunity."

Avengers: Doomsday is under six months away and, so far, we've seen precious little of the crossover that will introduce Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom to the MCU.

Four teasers were attached to screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash across January and December, while a CinemaCon trailer was released behind closed doors. Since then, however, we've had little to go on – except a bizarre coffee pop-up event. Expect San Diego Comic-Con in July to provide the goods. We hope.

If not, it might be a long, long wait until Avengers: Endgame Encore hits cinemas in the fall.

Tom Holland says the new Spidey suit is an homage to all of the live-action Spider-Mans... and this makes me even more stoked for Brand New Day.

"When we decided that we're going to make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we said, what if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey and Andrew's designs because my Peter Parker had met those guys. So we kind of created a Spider-Child of all three costumes," Holland explains in a new behind-the-scenes video.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton points out that we can see the "human" beneath the costume, meaning there's no face shield underneath the mask that gives it that weird jawline (and further conceals Spider-Man's identity). You can watch the video below.

With a new suit comes new, uh, features, seeing as Peter Parker can shoot his own webs now rather than rely on web-technology that he created himself (much like Tobey Maguire's Spidey). In the newest trailer, Peter goes to none other than Dr. Bruce Banner for help with his suddenly changing powers, though Bruce warns him that they kinda can't be contained (and he would know, given that he's the Hulk and all).

New suit, new powers, and a brand new villain (who is definitely Sadie Sink), though we still don't know if she's playing Jean Grey or a Dark Phoenix variation or even Madelyne Prior, or what.

Original He-Man actor Dolph Lundgren says he was disappointed that the new Masters of the Universe movie didn't fare better at the box office.

"Yeah, I was a bit disappointed. I mean, everybody told me it’s going to do great," Lundgren told ComicBook. "I’m not a huge believer in looking at the box office and that influencing how I feel that much emotionally about the picture. But I did think about it like, 'Oh, okay. Um that was strange that didn’t do better.' And I don’t know why that is. They did a lot of marketing, they did a lot of press. I was part of it, some of it. I don’t know where it’s at now; I mean, I think it did fairly well overseas as well. I’m not sure what that means really."

It's possible that live-action He-Man adaptations (despite both being very good, campy fun) are cursed given that the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie was also a box office flop. Lundgren played the Prince Adam to Frank Langella's Skeletor in the David Odell-penned film, which only grossed $17 million against a budget of $20 million.

The new Masters of the Universe, which stars Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man/Adam and Jared Leto as Skeletor, has only made $102 million against its $200 million budget so far. However, Amazon seems pretty pleased with the film overall, and the Masters of the Universe post-credits scene (which I stood up and clapped for) does set up a sequel... so there still might be hope yet. Lundgren also makes a super fun cameo in the new film, which may or may not have made me cry a little.

As Xbox CEO Asha Sharma continues to expand the publisher's game worlds into the realm of TV and film, she also has some fighting words for the biggest movie franchise of all time. "Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Xbox's new boss took the reins earlier this year and is now overseeing a reset that could potentially lead to studio shutdowns or layoffs, but one thing she's not scaling back on is the company's mammoth expansion to the big screen. Live-action feature films based on Gears of War and Sea of Thieves are going ahead, as is a sequel to A Minecraft Movie. Amazon Prime is also at work developing a third season of Fallout and a Wolfenstein streaming series.

But Call of Duty is maybe the company's biggest bet, with a new live-action film coming from Taylor Sheridan (Sicario writer and Yellowstone creator) and Peter Borg (Deep Water Horizon) currently set for 2028.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Sharma seemed pretty confident about the project's prospects and Xbox's increasing popularity in Hollywood.

"If you think about it, we've got the number two show of all time on Amazon [Fallout], Minecraft was top five in 2025, Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So it all measures. [There's] more appetite to work with us on titles than ever before," she says.

How she's qualifying Call of Duty's bigness compared to the MCU isn't totally clear. Movies in the joint Marvel Cinematic Universe have collectively made over $30 billion across 37 or so installments. While we don't have comparable numbers for the total gross of every Call of Duty game, Sharma's statement is still totally believable.

Call of Duty is almost always the best-selling game of any given year, Activision almost always monetizes them until and after the next one comes out, and the series has two free-to-play cash cows in the form of Call of Duty Warzone and Mobile. Whether that translates into box office success is another question. CoD doesn't have an icon to rely on, like a Super Mario or a Jack Black-shaped Steve, after all.

"You won't see us try to become the biggest linear provider in the world or anything like that, but I think great games are culture, and culture is entertainment," Sharma says.

Supergirl crash-landed in 2025's Superman, and now she's back with her own solo film: a suitably grittier, edgier, and rougher second entry in the DCU that puts Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El on a quest through space to save her dog, Krypto, from a vicious poison.

The trouble begins when sadistic brigand Krem (a near-unrecognizable Matthias Schoenaerts) callously shoots Krypto with a poisoned dart, after slaughtering the family of Ruthye (Eve Ridley), setting the youngster on a revenge mission that leads to her path crossing with Kara's. Since we saw her reclaim Krypto in Superman, Kara has been drinking her way across the galaxy, enjoying the benefits of a red sun (which strips her of her powers), and ignoring calls from her cousin, one Clark Kent, urging her to return to Earth so she can find her feet on the planet.

But when Krypto is critically injured, Kara shifts into gear: the dog isn't just an adorable companion, but her only real link to the family she was forced to leave behind on her dead home planet of Krypton. What follows is a surprisingly dark – and often gross – adventure to save Krypto and stop Krem, with the bond between Ruthye and Kara, two young girls who lost their family too young, at its heart.

Girl of Steel

Tonally, Supergirl is very different to Superman. The DCU has been unafraid to mix it up with its projects, and that ethos continues here – Superman was all about hope and optimism, while Supergirl peels open the galaxy's seedy underbelly. In fact, a surprising amount of the plot revolves around young girls being abducted into sexual slavery, which brings Mad Max: Fury Road to mind (the girls are even called "the brides" by the brigands). Kara encounters more foes than friends on her quest, including tech pirates who hijack a space bus to rob everyone onboard and strip it for parts, and countless brawlers in bars.

There's also a certain gross-out element to the film: Krypto pees on a newspaper article about Superman, Kara and Ruthye eat popcorn that's actually the excrement of an alien creature, and at one point, Kara is forced to make herself chug milk and vomit when she inadvertently drinks poison.

While DC Studios co-president James Gunn doesn't direct – I, Tonya and Cruella's Craig Gillespie is at the helm – the film does recall Guardians of the Galaxy, too: the irreverent tone, messy protagonist, and frequent needle drops all seem to owe something to the Gunn MCU trilogy, though Supergirl has more bite to it.

Kara is indeed a mess, beginning the film as a mix of perpetually drunk or hungover, convinced it's not her problem to help Ruthye get her revenge. She hasn't truly embraced being Supergirl like Clark Kent has embraced being Superman, made most obvious by the fact her iconic suit is lying abandoned on the floor of her spaceship. As the film goes on, flashbacks to Krypton reveal that Kara is this way because she wasn't ready to leave her home. Consequently, she can't find her place on Earth, despite Clark's advice.

But Kara does slowly begin to embrace her role as a protector, which involves getting back to a yellow sun and powering up. The film does a great job at making us understand Kara's pain, with the well-placed flashbacks giving context to some of her quirks, like her penchant for listening to music or her love for Krypto. Still, it feels like a long time until we see Kara truly using her powers, and even longer until she really lets loose without some kind of impairment, be that poison or Kryptonite.

The action is fun if a tad frenetic, and it's certainly satisfying to watch Kara stomp her way through bad guys. The bond between her and young Ruthye flourishes naturally, too, and it makes for an effective heart to the film: the duo has a lot in common, and they genuinely need each other on their journey, both practically and emotionally.

Ridley stands out as her perfectly precocious Ruthye, an earnest, balancing counterpoint to Kara's more cynical worldview. Alcock completely embodies Kara, too, whether that's the drunken, stumbling version of the Girl of Steel or the more determined, heroic version of her waiting in the wings, bringing the grit and sadness of a young girl forced to abandon her entire way of life for an alien land, as well as the sly humor of a 23-year-old trying to have a good time anyway.

This duo is more than enough to carry the film, so it's a little confusing why Jason Momoa's Lobo is included, in a change to Tom King and Bilquis Evely's source material. Momoa is plenty of fun as the cigar-chomping, growling anti-hero, but he's given a throwaway introduction and barely any plot relevance, which leaves him feeling like an entirely unnecessary addition to the film.

A cameo that does work, however, is David Corenswet's Superman. His screen time is very brief, but he is, once again, the quintessential Big Blue for those few minutes on screen, with his smiling optimism butting up against Kara's polar opposite attitude – a dynamic that seems ripe with potential for Man of Tomorrow and beyond.

Woman of Tomorrow

As the second DCU film, Supergirl feels somewhat oddly placed. More of a character study than a big blockbuster, the film does suffer from coming after last year's stellar Superman, which set the bar high for the new DC era. That film also felt like more of an event than its new younger sibling (or cousin); perhaps Supergirl will work well as a middle chapter between Superman and Man of Tomorrow, but that remains to be seen.

With Clayface coming later this year, though, the DCU is doubling down on its commitment to an eclectic mix of projects and tones, so Supergirl appears to be just one thread of a – hopefully – rich tapestry in the making.

Just like its protagonist, Supergirl is rough around the edges, but holds plenty of promise for the future. With two more DCU appearances confirmed, it seems this is only the beginning for Alcock's Kara. Up, up, and away…

DC fans won't have to wait too long to see Milly Alcock after Supergirl, as DC producer Lars P. Winther says she will play a big role in the next DCU film after Man of Tomorrow.

"So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that," said Wither to The Hollywood Reporter.

Winther didn't confirm which project is due to be released after the Superman sequel. However, DC boss James Gunn has already announced a stack of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters movies that are yet to be dated, including The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, The Authority, and a Wonder Woman feature. Who knows, maybe we will get a superwoman squad, and Alcock can help Diana Prince take down a DC comic book villain.

Before then, Alcock will return in Man of Tomorrow, and it sounds as though the new Supergirl movie somehow sets it up. "Man of Tomorrow, which is what we’re shooting now, [Alcock] is in that movie," confirmed Winther. "Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based."

Based on the Woman of Tomorrow comic book series, Supergirl finds Kara Zor-El in a rut, coping with her dark past by partying every night in space, with her only friend being her dog Kyrpto. However, when tragedy strikes too close to home, she must join forces with an unlikely companion for an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice. The movie also stars Jason Momoa as Lobo, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem.

The new movie includes a cameo from Superman star David Corenswet, but Supergirl director Craig Gillespie confirmed that "It is a standalone film." Winther added, "We’re trying to build our DCU and that Superman family… We are not just trying to do what the previous regime did and dig in about the same characters. We are trying to get some of the newer characters in. So we want to base it with Superman and felt that [Kara] was the next best character to build that story."

After Supergirl, the next DCU movie to hit screens will be Clayface in September 2026, followed by Man of Tomorrow in summer 2027.

Ahead of his return to the MCU, Robert Downey Jr. has shared some insight into Alan Silvestri's theme for Avengers: Doomsday. The former Iron Man star will be playing the new role of villain Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Marvel movie, and has shared how important the character's theme was for getting into character.

"We're on day 4 of production, Joe Russo's like, 'Come here.' And he plays me Doom’s theme. I was like, 'Oh, yeah. Okay, it’s that. And it even affected that day of shooting and every day since," Robert Downey Jr. said, according to reporter Brandon Davis, who quoted some of CBR's interviews with the actor.

We're not surprised as Silvestri is behind some of the most iconic movie scores of all time and has brought magic to Marvel many times before too. His work with the directors, the Russo brothers, on the Avengers movies has been especially stand-out too. Who can ever forget 'Portals' in Endgame?

We also heard a snippet of what might be Doom's theme at the end of Fantastic Four. Could it be the same one? Only time will tell...

Ahead of the new movie, the directors of Avengers: Doomsday have been hyping up their return to the MCU. According to the Russo brothers, the Marvel Phase 6 film is not going to be what audiences are expecting at all.

"That serial shifting and changing and surprising you and then reinventing itself and then shifting and changing and then surprising you... that’s exciting, and I think you’re going to see some shifting and changing [with Doomsday]," Joe Russo said at SXSW earlier this year.

"So, get ready for it. Look, we were with Rob [Downey Jr.] earlier today. We were both talking about this concept that we are back to phase zero. This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past."

The Batman 2 writer Mattson Tomlin says Disney turned down his idea for a sequel to the 1991 superhero movie The Rocketeer.

"Pitched a sequel with my pal JD Dillard to Disney last year that took place in real time," Tomlin tweeted. "100 harrowing minutes that would have really leaned into how viscerally insane it is to strap yourself to a rocket and save the world from fascists. Bummed it won’t see the light of day."

Directed by Joe Johnson, the movie stars Billy Campbell as a stunt pilot named Cliff Secord who finds a hidden rocket pack that lets him fly without needing an aircraft. This allows him to do heroic deeds with ease... which attracts the attention of the FBI and the Nazis who stole the technology in the first place. The cast includes Alan Arkin, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Sorvino, and Timothy Dalton.

At the time of release, the film received positive to mixed reviews and earned just a bit over its reported budget of $40 million. The Rocketeer was intended to become a trilogy, with Campbell and Connelly signing multi-picture deals, but was ultimately scrapped by Disney. A reboot was announced in 2012, and then again in 2016. In 2020, it was reported that JD Dillard would direct a sequel with Tomlin writing the screenplay... which was unfortunately scrapped. I think we'll get a theatrical rerelease at some point.
