Scream writer and Scream 7 director Kevin Williamson will take a "step back" for Scream 8.
"Not Scream [8], no… I think for the next Scream I'll step back and be part of the family again," Williamson told Hello Sidney when pressed on whether he would helm the next Scream chapter.
"I have some ideas of where it could go, but I'm anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it," Williamson said. I hope we get the chance to do it. It's nice to be part of the Scream family. That doesn't always mean I have to be front and center. I don't always have to write or direct; other people can take the reins.
Williamson added, with a degree of caution: "I'm hopeful there will be a [Scream] 8, no one is talking about it yet."
Despite lukewarm reaction from a diehard section of the fanbase for its reliance on nostalgia and kooky twists, Scream 7 got off to a killer start at the box office. The Neve Campbell-starring horror grossed close to $100 million globally in its opening weekend, though it has suffered a sharp – if normal – drop since.
If Scream 8 does come to pass, Campbell purportedly has ideas on how the slasher franchise could continue.
Speaking to Deadline in a separate interview, Williamson revealed, "Neve had this great idea, and everyone seemed to run with it.. If [Scream 7] works and people want it, we're here for the fans. So, if they want it, we'll certainly give it to them."

Scream 7, also starring Isabel May, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Anna Camp, revolved around Ghostface re-emerging in Sidney's life, with eyes on her daughter, Tatum.
