The first Arrival trailer has Amy Adams saving the world from alien invasion

If recent movies are anything to go by, if aliens come to Earth it'll be to make humans extinct (this year alone has given us the likes of Independence Day: Resurgence, The 5th Wave, and 10 Cloverfield Lane). One of the more hotly anticipated films yet to be released this year is Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, and its take on extraterrestrials - and how we'd respond to them - looks to be a little more nuanced than what we're used to seeing.

Check out the first trailer below...

It's not always easy to remain mysterious while still revealing and teasing a satisfying amount of secrets, but this trailer just about pulls it off. In addition to a quick glimpse of the aliens, we get a generous tease of the emotional journey Amy Adams' linguist will go through as she attempts to communicate with the ET's. It makes for a very intriguing promo that has me very excited to see how the plot will unfurl, so here's hoping this is as good as it looks.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tzi Ma, and Mark O'Brien, Arrival arrives in cinemas on November 11, 2016.
