Simon Kinberg to work on Star Wars spin-off script?

Yesterday we brought you news that the Star Wars spin-off movie had lost its writer, with Gary Whitta stepping down from the project despite having completed a first draft screenplay.

Now it seems that Disney is looking to move fast to replace him, with Slashfilm reporting that Simon Kinberg will be coming aboard to pen a new version of the script.

Kinberg was one of the first writers brought on board by the studio to take the franchise forward, and was the creative force behind recent animated series, Star Wars Rebels.

It has yet to be made clear just how he will fit into the studio’s feature film plans, but it had been speculated that Kinberg would be responsible for writing the script for Josh Trank’s spin-off film.

That may still be the case, but in the meantime it seems that Kinberg will be working alongside Gareth Edwards on the first Star Wars spin-off.

Nothing official has been confirmed by the studio as yet, but they will want the script rectified as soon as possible, ahead of the film’s projected release date in December 2016.
