Sci-Fi Bargains Of The Week

Beat the economic blues with some cut-price sci-fi merchandise. Steven Ellis is your guide

It’s bargain time. Let’s see what shiny discs we can tempt you with in this week’s sci-fi bargain round up.

Let’s kick off with Sam Neill and his vampires taking over the world in Daybreakers on DVD for £4.19 , the film is also available on Blu-ray for £7.49 .

Ben Alffeck dons shades and red leather as Matt Murdock in Daredevil for £1.72 . And for another £2.83 you can pick up sort-of-companion-piece film Electra as well. Although in this Superheroes boxed set from Play you can get both the above films, plus X-Men and X-Men 2 , all for the bargain-tastic price of £1.99 .

Next up we have a few TV suggestions for you; First we have Chuck seasons one to four on DVD for £28.97 . That’s seven quid a season, not bad at all.

If the article in this months SFX about the adventures of the Winchester boys interested you, but you’ve yet to sample their wares then Amazon have Supernatural season one on DVD for £8.94 and if you like what you see, then season two can be yours for just £8.99 too.

Not sci-fi we know, but it’s a great show and it’s got The Shat and a whole host of other sci-fi stalwarts in it. The Boston Legal complete boxed set is available from Amazon for £37.87 .

While you’re trying to figure out just how Sherlock did it, the BBC and Steven Moffat’s brilliant Sherlock Holmes modern update can be yours from HMV; Sherlock series one is £6.99 on Blu-Ray and Amazon has the same set on DVD for just £4.99 . Series two is out on Monday and you can pre-order it from Amazon on DVD for £12.99 and on Blu-ray for £17.49 . But if you wait a few months we reckon it’ll turn up in a future bargains round up a lot cheaper.

If you fancy a bit of sci-fi comedy then the simple beginnings of Sheldon and the gang can be yours; The Big Bang Theory season one is available from Amazon for £4.99 on DVD.

More sci-fi comedy, but of the animated variety with this Futurama – The Collected Epics set featuring Bender’s Big Score, The Beast With Ten Billion Backs, Bender’s Game and Into The Wild Green Yonder , all for just £11.95 .

Moving back to films we have the big screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust available on DVD for £3.51 .

Will Ferrell, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson have mind bending literary fun in the excellent Stranger than Fiction , available on DVD for £3.77 . Play have the Blu-ray for £10.61 .

Brandon Lee plays the scariest Goth on the block in The Crow-Special Edition available for £2.99 from Play.

Nicolas Cage doesn’t let another bad wig get in the way of his future predicting powers in Next from Play for £2.89 . If you’d prefer the Blu-ray then you pick that up for just £4.99 from Amazon.

With a remake on the horizon why not check out the classic Arnie/Verhoeven take on Philip K Dick’s We Can Remember It For You Wholesale story; Total Recall on DVD for £3.49 and Blu-ray for £7.49 .

Natasha Henstridge gets all naked and Geigeresque in this Species boxed set featuring all four of the aliens wanting sex films, your on DVD for £7.95 from Zavvi.

Join Ackroyd, Murray and the gang to battle ghosts in 1984’s spooky classic comedy Ghostbusters . HMV has the DVD for £3.22 and you can pick up the inferior but still funny sequel for just £4.47 .

Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman and John Hurt all star in the Wachowski’s take on Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta on DVD for £2.99 . If you’d prefer Blu-ray then you can get the film in this format for £7.49 .

How about Clive Owen in Alfonso Cuaron’s brilliantly bleak and brutal dystopian film Children Of Men on DVD it’s just £3.69 and the Blu-ray is £6.07 from Amazon.

In our trawl round the super markets we found Skyline for £5 and Thor for £7 . We also saw Kick-Ass , The Fantastic Four , Independence Day and Cloverfield all for £3 each on DVD at Asda.

In Tesco we spotted Star Wars: The Padawan Menace for £5 , I Am Legend , The Island and Attack The Block for £5 each. Last year’s Red Riding Hood was £7 and Black Swan is just £8 .

Nothing much on the Blu-ray front in either shop. It seems with Christmas out of the way prices are creeping back up again… So, Blu-ray peeps will just have to stick to internet shopping.

In our random picks this week we have suggestions from the SFX forum. Boo from the forum pointed out this selection of brilliant Zombie T-shirts , there’s a whole host of different designs from CafePress for £16.50 each.

Forumer Count Libido spotted these cool little Lego Star Wars planets sets. Each set has a model of a planet, a minifigure, a buildable model and a display stand with a name plaque. The Death Star comes with a TIE fighter model and pilot, the Tatooine set has Sebulba and his Pod Racer and the Naboo set has one of those yellow star fighters and a pilot too. The sets are £9.99 each from Play.
