Sinister Six

Plot: We’ve had Avengers on the big screen, but considering the Sinister Six the anti-Avengers, a group of supervillains originally headed up by Doctor Octopus. Sony’s planning on releasing the film as part of its Spider-Man franchise, and Drew Goddard’s on scriptwriting duties and possibly directing.

Whiplash

Cast: Miles Teller, J. K. Simmons, Melissa Benoist, Austin Stowell

Genre: Musical drama

Plot: A hit at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival (it opened the fest), this second film from director Damien Chazelle stars Miles Teller as Andrew, a young musician who wants to be a jazz drummer. Word from the fest is that it’s a genre-trashing musical with fantastic performances.

They Came Together

Genre: Comedy spoof

Plot: A star-studded comedy that lampoons rom-coms like You’ve Got Mail. Paul Rudd plays an evil exec, who goes up against Amy Poehler’s knick-knack store owner. Also attempting to tickle your funny bones are Ed Helms, Cobie Smulders, Melanie Lynskey and Michael Shannon.

Child Of God

Plot: Based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel, this hard-hitting drama deals in violence and isolation for a white-knuckle tale set in 1960s Tennessee. Scott Haze plays Lester Ballard, who wants to live outside of society, and whose cave-dwelling existence goes hand-in-hand with a life of crime. Don’t expect punches to be pulled.

The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist

Plot: The plot is still to be confirmed but Lorraine and Ed Warren (Farminga and Wilson) just can’t seem to avoid the supernatural as they return for the sequel and another round of scares. No word yet as to whether The Conjuring and Saw director James Wan will be returning for the sequel.

The Hateful Eight

Plot: Another Western for Tarantino after Django Unchained , The Hateful Eight has sadly been put on hold indefinitely after its script was leaked. Tarantino’s film would have followed two bounty hunters who go up against a Southern general in the middle of a blizzard. With Tarantino hinting he might tackle the project a few years down the line, we live in hope that the Hateful Eight will make it to the big screen one day.

Plot: Jerry Hickfang (Reynolds) starts hearing, yes, voices in this genre-mash of a thriller. Described as a ‘disturbed factory worker’, Jerry pines over a woman at work and starts taking advice from his pet cat and dog – the former evil, the later more benevolent. After a string of flops, Reynolds needs a hit, and this could be that hit.

Plot: Malick once again recruits an amazing A-List cast to star in a tale that's shrouded in mystery. Likely because he's bringing his typically fluid approach to filmmaking to proceedings, meaning entire scenes and plots could be dropped by the time the movie reaches the big screen.
