Even though The Haunting of Hill House season 2 is definitely on the way, it's not got the title you'd expect, instead being named The Haunting of Bly Manor. Yep, Mike Flanagan is at it again, but he's left the Crains in his rearview mirror and has begun a new anthology horror series like American Crime Story or American Horror Story.
With The Haunting of Hill House focused on a 1959 horror tale of the same name originally written by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Bly Manor is based on The Turn of the Screw, a chilling horror story from way back in 1898. If you're hungry for details about the Haunting of Bly Manor story then don't worry: so are we, and below you'll find everything you need to know about The Haunting of Hill House season 2, otherwise known as The Haunting of Bly Manor.

The Haunting of Hill House season 2 is actually The Haunting of Bly Manor - here's what it means
Wave goodbye to Steve, Shirley, Theo, Nell, and Luke: the next season of Mike Flanagan’s series isn’t The Haunting of Hill House season 2, it’s actually The Haunting of Bly Manor. As revealed in an Instagram post above it’s on the way, and it’s probably going to be very different from The Haunting of Hill House, with a new cast, setting, and story.
The voice you can hear in that video is saying “the terrace and the whole place, the lawn and the garden beyond it, all I could see of the park, were empty with a great emptiness,” which is a quote from chapter 4 of The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, a horror novella set in the English estate of Bly Manor.
The Haunting of Hill House ending explained - everything you need to know after watching
It tells the story of a governess who moves to Bly Manor to take care of a man’s niece and nephew - Miles and Flora - after their parents died. Things get weird when the governess starts to see ghosts of both the previous governess Miss Jessel and her lover Peter Quint around the property and well, I won’t spoil the ending for you, but debates rage on in literary circles about its ambiguity.
But there’s no guarantee that The Haunting of Bly Manor will follow the exact formula of James’ book. Like The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan will probably adapt the contents of The Turn of the Screw to fit the modern age but keep the core details: a governess will likely be replaced by a 21st-century suitable au pair or tutor, sent to look after two young children, and then will begin to see ghosts. Oh, and there will be the same amount - if not more - of ghosts hidden in the background of the scenes, which comes straight from Mike Flanagan himself...

That means a new cast, new story, and new scares. Even though I just know it’s probably going to keep me up at night, I just can’t wait. And with a 2020 release date for The Haunting of Bly Manor, that waiting isn’t going to be for long!
The Haunting of Hill House release date - when can we expect The Haunting of Bly Manor?
So far we know that The Haunting of Bly Manor is coming in 2020, but that is pretty vague. It leaves a whole 365 days for it to fall on, but what's obvious is that Netflix want this series on everyone's screens as soon as possible. Considering they still need to get a cast together, find a filming location, and start production (unless they've done all that and have just kept it incredibly quiet), it's likely that The Haunting of Bly Manor is going to be out in late 2020. But don't get me wrong: if it comes out earlier I'll be celebrating with the rest of you before stocking up on an ungodly amount of snacks and hiding behind a cushion when I actually start watching it.
The Haunting of Hill House cast - what they want from season 2
It turns out that the idea for The Haunting of Hill House season 2 being about another ghost story entirely was already on the mind of cast member Michael Huisman, who plays Steven. He suggested to Digital Spy last year that the series could be "an anthology”. Now there’s an idea. And he was right! We now know it'll be about The Haunting of Bly Manor, although Huisman does make it clear that he has “no idea... what [season 2] would look like."
Every hidden The Haunting of Hill House ghost we've found so far
"I'm up for anything," he says. "This could be more for me, but that really depends on the audience; if it's going to be successful or not, if people like it. The cool thing about Netflix is we can very easily see if people watch it or not. And then we'll start a conversation about whether or not we'll make season 2”.
Well, those conversations have now happened and The Haunting of Hill House season 2 will actually be The Haunting of Bly Manor... oh, what I wouldn’t give to have been a fly on the wall during those talks. Or, come to think of it, a ghost just like those ones hidden all throughout in Haunting of Hill House. *shudder*
The Haunting of Bly Manor might not be coming until next year, but there's plenty to watch in the meantime with the best new TV shows coming in 2019.
