The Oscars are cool and all, but the chance of pulling rare Pokemon cards between awards is the real rush. Ghostbusters and Five Nights at Freddy's 2 star Mckenna Grace made it her mission to be the first person to open Pokemon boosters at the event, and honestly, it's a vibe.

While on the red carpet, self-professed Poke-fan Grace excitedly showed off what she had in the pockets of her Jigglypuff-pink dress – a handful of packs including Journey Together (which is honestly one of the few sets you can easily get your hands on via Amazon right now, because the market for one of the best card games is sadly a dumpster fire). As revealed via Entertainment Tonight's TikTok, her plan was to rip packs during commercial breaks.

In the same video, Grace confirmed that she had already shared a booster with How to Train Your Dragon's Mason Thames. During an Instagram story, she also showed off what she'd gotten – a full art Clefairy ex. But don't worry, collectors; Grace said she had "card sleeves in my pocket to put them in." After all, she's not a savage.

I think a lot more of us would be joining her, if only Pokemon cards were easier to get hold of. As evidenced by how tricky it's been to find recent sets at a reasonable price, this is a tough market right now – both demand and unscrupulous resellers scooping up as many products as they can to flog at an inflated cost are a thorn in every fans' side. I'm already dreading how difficult it'll be to find the newest set, which I'll be tracking in our guide on where to buy Pokemon TCG Chaos Rising. Still, things could be on the up. Pokemon is acquiring a US trading card game distributor, which means our stock woes could be about to change. Cross your fingers and toes, everyone.

It was an inauspicious night for Disney's animation studios at the 2026 Oscars, as their latest failure to win in the Best Animated Feature category now puts their losing streak at a record-breaking four years.

The winner this year, of course, was Netflix/Sony Pictures Animation phenomenon KPop Demon Hunters, which went on to win Best Song as well, for 'Golden' (obviously). That means Disney's two key branches – Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar – have now gone five years without a win, since Encanto's victory in 2021.

This is surprising, as it's a category that Disney typically dominates. In the 26 years since the award was created, Walt Disney Animation Studios has won four times, while Pixar has won the Best Animated Feature Academy Award a whopping 11 times. For comparison, Dreamworks, Sony Pictures Animation, and the legendary Studio Ghibli have won an Oscar statuette only two times each.

What can we attribute this cold streak to? Disney, and particularly Pixar, haven't been putting out their best work in the last few years, and there's been a noteworthy recognition of movies that dare to venture outside the Disney/Pixar house style. Last year's winner, Flow, was made entirely on Blender, for example. While Sony Pictures Animation has been pushing the boundaries, first with the Spider-Verse movies, and now with KPop Demon Hunters. Are Oscar voters simply looking for something different?

Disney and Pixar have plenty to be happy about, though. Fellow nominee Zootropolis 2 was the highest-grossing American movie of last year, while Pixar's latest release, Hoppers, is soaring at the box office and has received the Studio's best reviews for an original movie in almost a decade. It's safe to say they won't be winning in 2030 though, as that's when we might expect to see KPop Demon Hunters 2 at the Oscars (if it isn't delayed).

Jessie Buckley has won Best Actress at the 98th Academy Awards for her role as Agnes in Chloé Zhao's Hamnet.

"We all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds," Buckley told the crowd in her acceptance speech, adding that it was Mother's Day in the UK. Buckley also won Best Actress in a Drama at the 2026 Golden Globes. This is her second Oscar nomination and first win, having been nominated back in 2021 for Best Supporting Actress for Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter.

Directed by Chloé Zhao, the historical drama follows the life of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife Agnes Hathaway (Buckley) as they grieve the death of their only son Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe), who passed away at 11 years old from the bubonic plague. Zhao co-wrote the screenplay with Maggie O'Farrell, who wrote the novel of the same name. As the names Hamlet and Hamnet are considered to be interchangeable, scholars have come to conclude that the infamous play Hamlet was indeed inspired by the loss of Shakespeare's son.

The film was nominated for a total of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Zhao, but walked away with only one. The cast also includes Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, Justine Mitchelle, David Willmot, and Noah Jupe.

“There’s no way that Shakespeare could write Lady Macbeth without knowing a woman who is as deeply complex as somebody like Agnes. The tenderness, the ferocious tenderness of what it is to be a woman," Bucklet told the LA Times of the role.

KPop Demon Hunters was nominated for two awards at the 98th Academy Awards... and managed to take home both.

The Netflix film won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Golden," which was performed live at the ceremony by Ejae, Rae Ami, and Audrey Nuna. Ejae accepted the award for Best Original Song alongside her co-songwriters, telling the crowd, through tears, that the song and the award are about "resilience." Overall, the film has been nominated for a total of 190 accolades this awards season, winning an impressive 132. Still to come are the iHeart Radio Music Awards and the Music Awards Japan.

Directed and written by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the animated film follows a KPop girl group known as Huntr/x, who protect the world from demonic entities with the power of their voices. The girls end up battling the Saja boys, a rival boy band whose members are (secretly) demons. The cast includes Arden Cho and Ejae as the speaking and singing voice of Rumi, respectively, May Hong and Nuna as the speaking and singing voice of Mira, respectively, and Ji-young Yoo and Ami as the speaking and singing voice of Zoey.

The film currently holds the record for Netflix's most-watched original movie ever, hitting close to 600 million views as of March 2026 and still going. A sequel was quickly ordered (one that will likely head to theaters first), though it likely won't arrive until 2029.

One Battle After Another has taken home the gold for Best Picture at the 98th Academy Awards.

The film beat out Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams... and we're not surprised, mainly due to the fact that the film had already taken home five Oscars. These wins include Best Directing for Anderson (his first after receiving a total of 14 Oscar nominations during his storied career), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Film Editing. This makes the film the most awarded one of the night with a grand total of six.

Based on the novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon, the movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob, an ex-revolutionary who is forced back to get back into the game after he and his daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti), are pursued by a corrupt military officer named Col. Lockjaw (Sean Penn). The cast includes Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall and Alana Haim, along with a knockout performance from relative newcomer Infiniti. And because One Battle won Best Picture, we'll forgive the Academy for failing to nominate Infiniti for Best Supporting Actress.

When accepting the award for Best Directing, Anderson told the crowd that he made the film as an apology to his children, previously telling the LA Times, "If you're a dad and you’re making a movie about a dad who’s desperately trying to find and protect his daughter, you are going to feel that deeply."

What a night. The curtain has fallen on the Oscars 2026 and, with it, has crowned a new Best Picture: Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. Although Sinners broke records with the most nominations in Academy Award history, it was One Battle that took home the most awards on the night – six, in total. Along with Best Picture, the action-comedy also won Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Actor for an absent Sean Penn.

Sinners still received an impressive four gongs, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan. The horror movie also made history when Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman to win Best Cinematography.

Now that the 2026 awards season is over, look ahead to the most exciting upcoming movies on the way this year.

Sinners star Michael B. Jordan has won Best Actor at the Oscars 2026, one of four wins for the movie.

Jordan played the dual roles of twin brothers Smoke and Stack in the vampire horror movie, two '30s gangsters who return to their hometown after a stint in organized crime in Chicago.

The actor thanked Ryan Coogler profusely, as well as his co-stars – including a shoutout for Wunmi Mosaku, who played Smoke's estranged wife Annie.

"I stand here because of people that came before me," Jordan said in his acceptance speech, citing previous Black Oscar winners including Denzel Washington, Will Smith, and Sidney Poitier.

"Thank you for keeping betting on me," he concluded.

The other Best Actor nominees were Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent.

Sinners broke records when it was nominated for a whopping 16 Academy Awards this year. It's won three other awards so far tonight: Best Score, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. For the latter, it made history, as cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first ever woman to win the award.

Jordan and Sinners director Ryan Coogler have a long working relationship, as Jordan has also starred in Black Panther and the Creed trilogy. This is his first Oscar nomination – and his first win.

One Battle After Another helmer Paul Thomas Anderson has picked up the gong for Best Director at the Oscars 2026, taking home his first-ever Academy Award.

"I'm here because of people's faith in me," he said during his acceptance speech after being presented with the award by Dune 3, The Odyssey and The Drama co-stars Robert Pattinson and Zendaya. "This is a wonderful gift, and I'm so happy to call the movies home."

The other nominees in the directing category were Ryan Coogler for Sinners, Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value, and Chloé Zhao for Hamnet.

Anderson has been nominated for 14 Oscars over the course of his 20-year career, including three previous Best Director nods (for There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza), but this is his first win.

So far tonight, One Battle After Another has won four awards: Best Casting, Best Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, who played Colonel Lockjaw. It's up for 13 awards in total this evening.

The film has been a massive hit with critics and audiences alike. GamesRadar+ gave the movie five stars in our One Battle After Another review, with our reviewer writing, "Paul Thomas Anderson's bravura comic satire is a serious film of the year contender, and one of the best studio movies in years. An instant classic."

Sean Penn has taken home the gold for Best Supporting Actor at the 98th Academy Awards for his role as corrupt military officer Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in One Battle After Another.

The award was accepted on his behalf by Kieran Culkin, who won the award the previous year for Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain. "Sean Penn couldn't be here this evening, or didn't want to," Culkin humorously said.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and loosely based on Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, the black comedy follows an ex-revolutionary (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is forced out of hiding when he and his daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti), are pursued by Lockjaw. Penn previously told W Magazine that the film made him fall in love with acting again after he turned to directing (though he did play Jack in Anderson's Licorice Pizza).

Penn beat out fellow nominees Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein, Delroy Lindo for Sinners, Stellan Skarsgård for Sentimental Value, and co-star Benicio "A Few Small Beers" Del Toro. This is also the second win of the night for One Battle After Another, the first being the Oscars' first-ever Best Casting award (and I personally think Cassandra Kulukundis deserves all the awards for introducing us to Infiniti), and the third being Best Adapted Screenplay.

The film is up for 9 more Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Original Score, Best Sound, and Best Director for Anderson.

Amy Madigan has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards.

"This is great," Madigan laughed as she accepted her award, presented by last year's winner Zoe Saldaña, before thanking Weapons writer and director Zach Cregger. "He just wrote a dream part, and he let me grab it by the throat," she said.

The other nominees in the category were Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value, Wunmi Mosaku for historical vampire movie Sinners, and Teyana Taylor for action-comedy One Battle After Another, who Madigan paid tribute to in her acceptance speech.

Madigan played outlandish antagonist Aunt Gladys in 2025 horror hit Weapons, the terrifying elderly relative of shy schoolkid Alex who moves into his home – and feeds off the energy of his kidnapped classmates.

She was so terrifying, in fact, that GamesRadar+ named her our villain of the year in 2025. "Madigan embodies Gladys with a glorious no-shits-given self-assurance as well as a certain amount of ironic physical comedy," our writer said.

Madigan's award is the only recognition Weapons will be getting tonight, however, as the movie didn't pick up any other nominations. Still, it's set to be a pretty good night for the horror genre – Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, is up for 16 gongs, making it the most nominated movie at the Oscars ever.

The Oscars 2026 are almost here, and we're about to find out who's going to get their hands on a golden statuette at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre this weekend. A big part of the fun of awards season is the guessing, so we've taken a look at historical trends and the state of the industry (with a sprinkling of our own opinions) to give you our best guesses for the 2026 Oscar winners.

Awards shows are never a certainty, of course, and none more so than the Oscars – after all, Anora emerged as a wildcard winner last year, beating frontrunner The Brutalist and pulling in surprise victories for director Sean Baker and star Mikey Madison. It may look like a sure thing for One Battle After Another this year, but how will everything play out on the night?

Without further ado, then, these are our predictions for the biggest categories at the Oscars 2026: Best Picture, Best Director, and the four acting categories...

Oscars 2026 predictions

Best Picture

The nominees:

Now, the key predictor for the Oscars' Best Picture winner is the PGA (Producers Guild of America) Awards and, on that basis, it looks like One Battle After Another will take home the big prize. Still, we think it's going to be a close call between that and Sinners.

Sinners made history with a record-breaking 16 nominations this year, but we think that the Academy will hold the fact that it's a genre film against it. Plus, director Paul Thomas Anderson has been nominated for nine Oscars over the course of his career (12, if you include this year's nods) and has yet to win, so the Academy may well think that 2026 is his year, thanks to One Battle After Another quickly becoming one of the biggest crowd pleasers in his filmography. Of course, it would be cool to see an international feature like The Secret Agent or Sentimental Value win, but we think that's pretty unlikely.

Best Director

The nominees:

In the majority of cases, the Best Picture and Best Director winners line up, so if One Battle After Another wins the former, Paul Thomas Anderson is extremely likely to take home the latter (over the years, 77% of Best Picture winners that have also been nominated for Best Director have won both awards). That means that if Sinners wins instead, we can expect Ryan Coogler to take home Best Director.

Surprisingly, the only former winner in this list is also the only woman: Chloé Zhao won Best Director for Nomadland back in 2021, making her only the second of three female filmmakers to do so.

Best Actor

Last year, the Golden Globe acting winners almost perfectly foretold the Oscar winners, and we're expecting similar results this year. Timothée Chalamet took home the former for playing ping pong prodigy Marty Mauser in the high-octane Marty Supreme, so he's likely to replicate that win in the Dolby Theatre. He may only be 30, but an Oscar win has been a long time coming for the actor – this is his third Best Actor nomination after being recognized for A Complete Unknown in 2025 and Call Me By Your Name in 2018.

Of course, he may follow the same trajectory as one of his inspirations, Leonardo DiCaprio, who only won after his fifth nomination, 20 years into his career. That could mean DiCaprio takes home his second Oscar this year for playing stoner ex-revolutionary Bob in One Battle After Another, a performance that was equal parts moving and funny in its absurdity. We think Michael B. Jordan could stand a chance to win for Sinners, too, especially if the film misses out on winning Best Picture. Jordan pulled double duty in a dual role as twins Smoke and Stack in the jaw-dropping vampire period horror movie and recently won the Actor (formerly SAG) Award for Best Actor, over Chalamet and DiCaprio.

Best Actress

• Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You)
• Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue)
• Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value)

Jessie Buckley seems like the obvious winner of Best Actress in 2026. Not only did she already take home the Golden Globe for her standout turn as Agnes in historical heart-wrencher Hamnet, but she gave the sort of powerhouse performance that the Academy tends to love.

Otherwise, Renate Reinsve could be a wildcard winner for playing troubled actor Nora in Sentimental Value – we'd love her to get her flowers, especially after her work in 2021's The Worst Person in the World was largely overlooked, but that may have to wait until another year. Rose Byrne would be another great leftfield, if unlikely, choice for her daring turn as a mother on the brink in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. Hey, we can dream.

Best Supporting Actor

The nominees:

• Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein)
• Delroy Lindo (Sinners)
• Sean Penn (One Battle After Another)
• Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value)*

Both supporting categories are full of stiff competition this year, but we reckon Stellan Skarsgård stands a good chance of going home with the golden statuette for his role as past-his-prime filmmaker and absent father Gustav Borg in Sentimental Value. He won the Golden Globe, and last year's winner, Kieran Culkin, went on to take the Oscar, too. Plus, Skarsgård just puts in a really great supporting turn.

Delroy Lindo's nomination was a very pleasant surprise – he's not been dominating much of the awards conversation for his role as musician Delta Slim in Sinners, but it's a stellar performance. And, maybe this marks some well-overdue recognition from the Academy: it's his first nomination in a career that spans half a century.

Best Supporting Actress

• Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value)
• Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value)
• Amy Madigan (Weapons)
• Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners)
• Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another)*

Teyana Taylor put in an absolutely barnstorming performance as revolutionary and reluctant mother Perfidia Beverly Hills in One Battle After Another, giving us a complicated and nuanced portrait of motherhood that's rarely depicted so sensitively on screen. She seems like the obvious choice for the Best Supporting Actress gong, especially as she took home the Golden Globe earlier this month (Zoe Saldaña won both the Supporting Actress Golden Globe and Oscar in 2025).

It would be pretty groundbreaking for Wunmi Mosaku or Amy Madigan to go home with the award for their performances as Annie and Aunt Gladys in two of last year's biggest horror movies, Sinners and Weapons, but we think Taylor is the most likely winner.

Wicked: For Good received zero Oscars nominations this year, despite the fact that the first movie was nominated in 10 categories in 2025.

Despite predictions for Ariana Grande to get a nod for Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Glinda, the sequel was absent from today's Oscars 2026 nominations announcement.

Wicked: For Good also includes two new songs that aren't in the original Broadway musical, which many assumed were included for awards recognition, but the film was shut out of the Best Original Song category in favor of tunes from Kpop Demon Hunters, Sinners, Train Dreams, Diane Warren: Relentless, and Viva Verdi!.

In 2025, Wicked was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. The film took home the awards for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

Other notable omissions from this year's nominations were One Battle After Another's Chase Infiniti, who missed out on a Best Actress nod for her standout turn playing the teenage daughter of Leonardo DiCaprio's Bob, and Park Chan-wook's buzzy new black comedy No Other Choice was missing from the Best International Feature category.

Plus, despite the movie's eight other nominations, Paul Mescal didn't get a Best Actor nod for his role as William Shakespeare in Hamnet, but Sinners' Delroy Lindo was a pleasant surprise addition to the category instead.

File this story under the "It didn't work that way before?" category, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new rules for the 2025 Academy Awards season that will require judges to watch all nominees in a given category before making their vote for the winner.

The fact that Academy members haven't been tasked with watching every officially nominated film in each category has long been a contentious aspect of Oscar judging. In years past, judges could cast a vote for Best Picture, for example, without having actually seen all the films.

In what is sure to be a decision that raises eyebrows, both among those who are for and those who are against the decision, that's now going to be different – though the Academy's press release, which outlines the new rule, doesn't give any indication how a voter might prove that they've seen all the films (or whether they'll even be asked to prove it).

Also of note in the release is a bit about how the Academy will treat films that use generative AI, saying in somewhat oblique terms that using it in the creation of a film will "neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination," and that "the Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award."

These are the biggest changes to the rules for the upcoming ceremony.

The previous Oscars were held on March 2, with dark horse independent film Anora winning five awards including Best Picture and Best Actress for its star Mikey Madison.

James Cameron has praised Avatar star Zoe Saldaña after she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 97th Academy Awards. She picked up the gong for her role as lawyer Rita Mora Castro in Emilia Perez, Netflix's surprise musical hit.

"I was so happy to see Zoe acknowledged as the world-class performer we, in the Avatar family, have always known her to be," he told Variety. "Her acceptance speech was a noble reminder of what immigrant families bring to the US and to Hollywood."

Cameron was referencing how in her speech Saldaña spoke about how proud she was to be a "child of immigrant parents". The Marvel star added: "The fact that I’m getting an award for a role where I got to sing and speak in Spanish – my grandmother, if she were here, she would be so delighted, this is for my grandmother."

This isn't the first time that Cameron has gone out of his way to praise Saldaña, who revealed earlier this year that he got in touch after her Golden Globes win.

"I was sitting in the audience, and I received a message from James Cameron, who’s somewhere in New Zealand right now, cutting Avatar: Fire and Ash," the star said in the press room after her win. "And he, after all these years, believes in me. So that, to me, nourishes my desire to continue growing as an artist."

Saldaña plays Neytiri in the Avatar franchise, a role that she first took when she was in her 20s. She recently shared that she'd made a 26-year commitment to making the films, which have several sequels on the way, including Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is the third movie in the franchise and releases later this year.

The Academy Award for Best Actress at the 2025 Oscars goes to Mikey Madison for Anora. Accepting the award, she said that she grew up in LA, but that "Hollywood always felt so far away."

Madison also tearfully thanked the cast, crew, the community of Brighton Beach, her fellow nominees, and shouted out director Sean Baker, saying, "This is all because of you."

Madison beat Wicked's Cynthia Erivo, Emilia Perez's Karla Sofía Gascón, The Substance's Demi Moore, and I'm Still Here's Fernanda Torres to take home the award. Her win was something of a surprise as Moore had been the clear favorite going into the final awards ceremony, but Anora had a late surge of popularity with voters. She also won the BAFTA award for Best Actress at the 2025 ceremony, which she dedicated to sex workers.

In Anora, Madison plays Anora 'Ani' Mikheeva, a dancer living and working in Brighton Beach who is introduced to Ivan 'Vanya' Zakharov, the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch. The pair begin a whirlwind romance after he hires her to become his girlfriend, which quickly escalates when they get married on a whim in Vegas. When Vanya's family find out about the nuptials, they are none to pleased in this wild comedy drama.

Speaking to GamesRadar+ for our Big Screen Spotlight piece on the film, Madison said: "Ani is a very different character from anyone I've played, but I think that the stunt training that I was able to do in preparation for Scream definitely helped me doing my own stunts for Anora. The physicality of the character, it was the most challenging thing I've ever had to do, honestly."

Sean Baker has won the Academy Award for Best Director at the 2025 Oscars. He wins for helming Anora, which has had a great night at the awards ceremony. Accepting the award, he said, "Filmmakers, keep making films for the big screen. Distributors, please focus first and foremost on the theatrical releases of your films."

Anora is Baker's seventh feature film after his previous success with movies like The Florida Project, Red Rocket, and Tangerine. It follows Ani (played by Mikey Madison), a stripper and escort from Brighton Beach in New York City. She finds herself in a whirlwind romance with Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn), the wealthy son of a Russian oligarch after they meet at her club. What follows is a wild comedy-drama as Vanya's parents find out what happened and are not very pleased.

Baker's win is something of a surprise, after The Brutalist's Brady Corbet has taken home a huge chunk of the wins during the awards season so far. However, he did win the Independent Spirit Award and the Directors Guild of America Award.

Speaking to GamesRadar+ about Anora for our Big Screen Spotlight series, Baker said: "The unfair stigma applied to sex work has not gone away. My hope is that continuing to make these stories is helping to chip away at that stigma."

The Academy Award for Best Actor goes to Adrien Brody at the 2025 Oscars for his role in The Brutalist. Accepting the award, Brody said, "Acting is a very fragile profession. It looks very glamorous and in certain moments it is - No matter where you are in your career, no matter what you've accomplished, it can all go away. and I think what makes this night so special is the awareness of that and the gratitude to still do what I live. Winning this award signifies a destination, something my character references in the film. Beyond the pinnacle of my career, it's the chance to begin again."

He also asked them to turn off the music, extending his speech (the way Kieran Culkin jokingly said he would at the SAG Awards). He continued by saying the film is a reminder to "not let hate go unchecked."

The actor beat A Complete Unknown's Timothée Chalamet, Conclave's Ralph Fiennes, Sing Sing's Colman Domingo, and The Apprentice's Sebastian Stan in the category. Brody was always the frontrunner for his moving performance as Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor László Tóth in Brady Corbet's epic drama.

The film charts Tóth's life after the Second World War when he emigrates to America. However, living penniless and without his wife, life is hard for former architect Tóth until he meets a wealthy businessman who changes his life. He starred in the movie with Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce, who were also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor categories, respectively.

Brody gives a moving and powerful performance in the role, which has been a hit this awards season. The Academy Award completes his run of winning the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Critics' Choice awards. The only major gong he lost out on was the SAG Award, which went to Chalamet.

This is also Brody's second Oscar win, after he became the youngest winner in the category at 29. That time, he won for his role as Władysław Szpilman in Roman Polanski's 2002 war drama The Pianist.

Five-time Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola has just walked away with a Razzie for Worst Director, leading to a written response worth framing or sticking on a fridge only used by legends.

Coppola's box-office bomb, Megalopolis, earned six Razzie nominations this year, including Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay. Unsurprisingly, the man behind The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now (which are both pretty good, so we hear) took the latest "victory" in his stride, posting his thoughts on the news via Instagram.

"I am thrilled to accept the Razzie award in so many important categories for @megalopolisfilm, and for the distinctive honor of being nominated as the worst director, worst screenplay, and worst picture at a time when so few have the courage to go against the prevailing trends of contemporary moviemaking!" Coppola wrote.

The director went on to give his analysis of current events, saying, "In this wreck of a world today, where ART is given scores as if it were professional wrestling, I chose to NOT follow the gutless rules laid down by an industry so terrified of risk that despite the enormous pool of young talent at its disposal, may not create pictures that will be relevant and alive 50 years from now.” We can only assume that even though this was a written response, Coppola had a microphone in his hand that was now halfway to being dropped in slow motion.

As with all traditional award speeches, Coppola rounded things off by thanking his cast, which included Jon Voight, who also won a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor. “What an honor to stand alongside a great and courageous filmmaker like Jacques Tati who impoverished himself completely to make one of cinema’s most beloved failures, PLAYTIME! My sincere thanks to all my brilliant colleagues who joined me to make our work of art, MEGALOPOLIS, and let us remind ourselves us that box-office is only about money, and like war, stupidity and politics has no true place in our future.”

Besides Megalopolis taking home some of the shiny fruit-shaped trophies, Madame Web also earned the title of Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay, with its star, Dakota Johnson, nabbing the credit of Worst Actress. As it stands, Coppola's written thanks is up there with one of the greats, right alongside Halle Berry, who attended the ceremony back in 2005 for her performance in Catwoman while bringing her own Oscar that she won in 2002 for Monster's Ball along for the celebrations. Coverage of the 97th Academy Awards will begin at a new time of 7pm EDT/4pm PDT this year in the US. It will be available to watch live on your local ABC station if you're a cable or satellite subscriber.

If you're planning to stream, it will be available on Hulu+LiveTV for subscribers – and the platform offers a 3-day free trial too. If you're not a Hulu subscriber, you're also able to stream ABC via Sling (select cities), Fubo (7-day free trial), DirecTV Stream, YouTubeTV, AT&T TV.

Angela Bassett has spoken out about her Oscar loss in 2023 and says she thought she was "deserving" of an Academy Award for her work in Black Panther 2.

"I found it interesting," Bassett said in a new interview with Town & Country. "Interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving."

Bassett was nominated for playing grieving mother Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, making her the first actor to ever be nominated for an Academy Award for a Marvel movie. It was her second nomination in her almost 40-year career.

Jamie Lee Curtis took home the gong for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once instead, and Bassett's reaction to her win went viral.

"I love applauding people," she added, saying that she thought she had put in the work to be recognized, before correcting herself. "No, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given."

Next up for Bassett is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. She reprises her Fallout role as Erika Sloane, a former CIA director who's now the President of the United States, opposite Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Ving Rhames, and Simon Pegg.

• All About Eve (1950): The classic American drama was written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and stars Bette Davis as an aging Broadway actor. Out of the 14 categories it was nominated for, it only won six awards, including Best Picture, as well as Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
• Titanic (1997): James Cameron's heartbreaking biopic about Titanic starred Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as doomed star-crossed lovers who meet on the passage of the fated vessel. The film was nominated in 14 categories and ended up winning a huge 11 awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Song. This means it also jointly holds the title of the most Oscars won by a single film.
• La La Land (2016): Damien Chazelle's musical comedy La La Land stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a struggling jazz pianist and an aspiring actor. Their tragic love story landed 14 nominations, but only ended up winning in six categories. It won Best Director and Best Actress, and almost won Best Picture as well, but ah, we all know how that blunder went…

What are the highest Oscar winning movies?

It's all very well getting nominated, but if you don't win, it doesn't count for much. Only Titanic, of those highest nominated movies, actually makes it into the category of the most Oscars won by a single movie. The 2025 nominations for the controversial Golden Raspberry Awards, otherwise known as the Razzies, are in – and it's bad news for Borderlands, Madame Web, and Joker 2.

All three are up for Worst Picture, alongside Francis Ford Coppola's controversial sci-fi Megalopolis and Sean McNamara's biographical drama Reagan. While the latter filmmaker missed out on a Worst Director nod, Coppola wasn't so lucky, and will go up against the likes of S. J. Clarkson, Todd Phillips, Eli Roth, and Jerry Seinfeld, who helmed Netflix comedy Unfrosted.

Reacting to his nomination on Instagram, Harold and the Purple Crayon's Zachary Levi said he was taking it as a "front-handed compliment".

Since the Razzies were introduced back in 1981, film fans have described the event as "mean-spirited", "petty", and "unfunny". Many have called for it to be canceled over the years, too. In the past, some people have won Oscars and Razzies in the same year, including Aladdin composer Alan Menken who picked up an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Razzie for Worst Original Song – for Aladdin and Newsies, respectively – in 1993. Sandra Bullock won Worst Actress for her role in All About Steve in 2010, before picking up the Best Actress gong for The Blind Side the very next day.

The Razzies was one forced to issue an apology over its "insensitive" nomination of Firestarter actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who was just 12 years old at the time, and rescind an "award" given to Bruce Willis in 2021 after his family disclosed he'd been diagnosed with aphasia.

Stephen King has announced that he isn't casting any votes for the 2025 Oscars because of the fires devastating Los Angeles – and he thinks the ceremony should be canceled, too.

"Not voting in the Oscars this year," the author wrote on Bluesky. "IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire."

The fires are affecting several neighborhoods in LA, with the largest burning through more than 23,000 acres in the Palisades area. At least 25 people have died.

Although the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon, set to occur on February 10 this year, has been canceled, the 2025 Oscars are still scheduled to go ahead on Sunday, March 2.

Nominations were originally meant to be announced on Friday, January 17, before being pushed back to Sunday, January 19, and again to Thursday, January 23. The Academy has also extended the voting period for members, and will now close on January 17.

King's work has been the subject of many movies, and next up is his short story The Monkey, which is being brought to screen by Longlegs director Osgood Perkins. Theo James plays twin brothers Hal and Bill, who witnessed a string of horrifying deaths as children after discovering their father's toy monkey in the attic.

After attempting to put their past behind them and going their separate ways, the brothers suddenly find themselves surrounded by death again as adults and are forced to reconcile to eliminate the monkey once and for all. The movie's cast also includes Tatiana Maslany and Elijah Wood.

The Monkey arrives in theaters on February 21. In the meantime, check out our guide to the other upcoming horror movies on the way in 2025.

The Penguin actor Colin Farrell has become the third performer to win a Golden Globe for playing a comic book villain, and the first to do so with a TV show. The HBO series sees the Irish actor reprising his role as The Penguin (prosthetics and all) after his debut in 2022's The Batman.

Following his win, Farrell was asked in the awards' press room how it feels to join such a select list of winners, which includes Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix. Both actors were previously honored with a Golden Globe (and an Oscar) for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight and Joker, respectively.

"You mentioned two actors who are, I think, for my money, two of the most extraordinarily talented and gifted and just brilliant artists in films that I've ever had the fortune to observe and be affected by," he started (via Variety).

"What Heath did in Chris Nolan's Dark Knight was extraordinary, and will live on for future generations. And what [Phoenix] did with the Joker was as exemplified by all the awards that he won, in the Oscars. It was extraordinary.

"It was so special, both of them. So to have your name just uttered in the same sentence as those performances, honestly, it's lovely, but still I'm more of just a fan of it all! I don't feel like I'm part of that pantheon. Joaquin and Heath, just two extraordinary and honest great actors."

Now with a Golden Globe, Colin Farrell might be more inclined to come back for a second season of The Penguin. When asked by Total Film last September, he wasn't very sure.

"Don't get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I fucking wanted it to be finished. I tried to remind them that I had 'grumpy gratitude.' I was still grateful, and still honored," he said.

"Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] said, 'Look, if I could find a way that makes sense, would you talk about it?' And I said, 'Absolutely.' And maybe in a year I would. But when I finished I was like, 'I never want to put that fucking suit and that fucking head on again.'"

At least we'll get to see Farrell's Penguin again on the big screen, as the actor has signed up for three Batman films including the upcoming The Batman 2.

Venice Film Festival... Cannes... Cat Video Fest? The world's strangest (and cutest) film festival is back and it's touring the US, Canada, and Australia, with over an hour's worth of curated cat videos to enjoy. 

Cat Video Fest showcases a hand-picked reel of the best cat videos pulled from public submissions. The best part? The event raises money for cat charities, animal welfare organizations, and shelters. In fact, since 2019, the event has made over $150,000 for local shelters and more, and even encourages attendees to adopt a kitty for themselves as well.

This year, the 73-minute reel consists of videos of varying length, tone, and subject matter. No matter what kind of feline fan you are, there is something for everyone from grumpy cats, feisty cats, musically talented cats, and even a kitty climbing the wall whilst 'Spider Pig' from The Simpsons Movie plays in the background.

The lucky person who gets to choose which cat videos appear is Will Braden. In an interview with Variety, Braden revealed that he watches 15,000 cat videos per year and selects about 200 for the reel. The whole process from picking clips to displaying them takes him all year long. "It's my full-time job. My business cards say I watch cat videos," he said. But even so, it sounds like the dream, right? "As long as people laugh, and as long as we raise money for cats in need," added Braden. "Then I'll have the greatest job ever for as long as I want it."

But it looks like Cat Video Fest has some competition as The NY Cat Film Festival, led by pet wellness advocate Tracie Hotchner, is also making its way through New York City this October. The festival will screen a 90-minute film made up of cat-themed filmed from animated shorts to mini-documentaries, all hosted by a panel of cat anchors called Cats Eye Witness News. Let the kitty wars commence! All for a good... paws, of course.

After an amazing year of film, it is no surprise the Oscars 2024 was a wild ride, giving us some stellar fashion moments, tearful speeches, and, most importantly, some seriously hilarious moments.

Just like that, the 96th Academy Awards have been and gone, but that doesn't mean we can't look back on some of its best bits. From a perfect pooch to a naked WWE star, here are our picks of the 10 best moments from the 2024 Academy Awards. 

Messi is in the building

Who would have thought that the Oscars’ most esteemed guest would be four-legged and furry? After much debate as to whether or not the canine co-star would be allowed to attend the awards, Messi the dog from Anatomy of a Fall did in fact appear at the ceremony. The seven-year-old Border Collie even earned a shoutout from host Jimmy Kimmel during his monologue: "Messi, who even though he’s a dog, may have given the performance of the year in Anatomy of a Fall." Good boy, Messi! 

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes gets Kenergized 

Now, we all knew that Ryan Gosling would bring the Kengery to the 2024 Academy Awards with a pink-tastic performance of 'I’m Just Ken', but what was surprising was that some of his fellow Barbie castmates also made an appearance. Ken variations Scott Evans, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Ncuti Gatwa all took to the stage in tuxedoes, as well as musicians Mark Ronson, Slash, and Wolfgang Van Halen. Not only this, but the performance took inspiration from Marilyn Monroe’s 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' performance in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, with Gosling trading Monroe’s iconic pink ballgown for a fuchsia suit. Forget beach, we think Ken’s new job should be popstar.

John Cena bares all

Talk about bringing a little bit of spice to the ceremony. Whilst introducing the category for Best Costume Design, WWE star-turned-actor John Cena threw caution (and clothing) to the wind as he stripped down on stage to present the award. This happened after host Jimmy Kimmel invited Cena onstage to pay homage to the infamous 1974 Oscars streaker incident, but, luckily for the audience, the star quickly changed into something more appropriate… a toga.  

An overwhelmed Emma Stone

It was a big night for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, which took home four awards, one being Best Actress in a Leading Role for Emma Stone. This is the second Oscar the star has won, but although it wasn't her first rodeo, the win – and the night as a whole – seemed to be a bit overwhelming for her. When it came time to accept her award, Stone seemed to be visibly shocked and lost for words, and the star had even ripped open the back of her dress, which presenter Charlize Theron tried to fix on stage. The drama continued off stage as Stone was seen rushing from the sidelines back to the ceremony when she realized another category that Poor Things was nominated in was being announced. Emma Stone, we hope you never change.

Nolan finally wins the gold

It was a clean sweep for Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer, which took home a staggering seven Oscars after being nominated in 13 categories. The wins included Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Cillian Murphy, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Robert Downey Jr. to name a few, as well as Best Director for Nolan. Although a lot of us saw this coming, this is a big deal for Nolan as this is the first Oscar the director has won in that particular category. That’s quite shocking, right? After helming iconic flicks such as The Dark Knight, Inception, Tenet, and Interstellar, it's about time the British director finally took home gold, and we are so glad to see it. 

Barbenheimer finally faces off

After the cinematic battle Barbeheimer ruled summer 2023, it felt rather serendipitous to see the two movies face off at the Oscars. Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt and Barbie’s Ryan Gosling represented both films when they hit the stage to pay tribute to stunt performances and poke fun at their big-screen rivalry. Blunt pointed out that the 2023 contest doesn't really matter now, as the two movies were not even nominated in the same categories. 

"It's true, you guys are doing very well, congratulations, but I think I've figured out why they called it Barbenheimer and didn't call it Oppenbarbie," Gosling joked. "I think you guys are at the tail end of it because you were riding Barbie's coattails all summer." The Oppie actor made sure to have the last word with, "Thanks for Ken-splaining that to me, Mr. I-need-to-paint-my-abs-on-to-get-nominated, you don't see Robert Downey Jr. doing that. Robert Downey did not paint his abs on." Oh, what fun. 

Cult '80s and '90s movie reunions

The ceremony saw multiple movie reunions and familiar faces, but what was most exciting was seeing Beetlejuice’s Micheal Keaton and Catherine O’Hara reunite on stage thirty-five years after their Tim Burton film debuted. We don’t know about you, but that has made us extra pumped for Beetlejuice 2 releasing later this year. We also saw Keaton catch up with his Batman castmates (or should we say 'nemeses') Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played villains the Penguin and Mr. Freeze in the franchise. The two baddies locked eyes with the Bat whilst presenting, adding, "We’ll see you at the Governor's Ball!" You’d better suit up, Keaton – it looks like Gotham may be in trouble again.  

The most beautiful acceptance speeches

Unsurprisingly, the 2024 Academy Awards saw some truly moving speeches that pulled on our heartstrings, including first-time win acceptance speeches from the likes of Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy, who won Best Actor in a Leading Role, and director Christopher Nolan. But the most heartfelt was from The Holdovers' Da'Vine Joy Randolph, who won the award for Best Supporting Actress. Rudolph was already in tears when she made it to the stage, where she then thanked God, her mother, and "all the people who have stepped in my path and been there for me," adding, "I pray to God that I get to do this more than once. I thank you for seeing me." Just beautiful.  

Justine Triet is a P.I.M.P.

French director Justine Triet may have just won herself a place in the Oscars' Hall of Fame, not only for her film Anatomy of a Fall winning Best Original Screenplay, but for her choice of walkout music. To fans’ delight, Triet and writer Arthur Harari walked to the podium to a live orchestra version of a cover of 50 Cent's P.I.M.P., a song that plays a major role in the film. Once on stage, the very real Triet showed us just how relatable she is with her acceptance speech. "This is a crazy year, in contrast with what it started out as before. Stuck in the house with two kids. It was lockdown, and we hooked them up to cartoons to have peace. And there was no line, I think, between work and diapers," said an emotional Triet.

Now, it wouldn't be an awards ceremony without the audience at home getting involved the best way they know how: memes. And boy, is there some first-class Oscar content out there on social media right now. Emma Stone has won the Oscar for Best Actress at this year's Academy Awards.

The actor was nominated in the category for her performance in Yorgos Lanthimos's surrealist comedy-drama Poor Things, and beat out the likes of Nyad's Annette Bening, Maestro's Carey Mulligan, Anatomy of a Fall's Sandra Hüller, and Killers of the Flower Moon's Lily Gladstone.

Accepting the award, Stone admitted she'd had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction as her dress split. "I think it happened during 'I'm Just Ken,'" she laughed. 

"The other night I was panicking that this could happen, and Yorgos said, 'Take yourself out of it," she continued. "And he’s right. This is about a team that came together to make something bigger than the sum of its parts. I’m so deeply honoured to share this with every person who poured their love and brilliance into this film. Thank you, Yorgos, for giving me the part of a lifetime in Bella Baxter.” 

It marks Stone's second Academy Award win, having picked up the gong for her role as Mia in Damien Chazelle's modern-day musical La La Land back in 2017. In Poor Things, she plays Bella Baxter, a young woman who finds herself learning the ways of the world again after being resurrected by Willem Dafoe's pioneering surgeon Godwin.

Of Stone's co-stars, Mark Ruffalo was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category, but lost out to Robert Downey Jr. As for the film, it was also up for Best Costume, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture.

Robert Downey Jr. has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at this year's Academy Awards.

The actor was nominated in the category for his performance in Christopher Nolan's biographical thriller Oppenheimer, and beat out the likes of American Fiction's Sterling K. Brown, Barbie's Ryan Gosling, Poor Things' Mark Ruffalo, and Killers of the Flower Moon's Robert De Niro. It marks Downey Jr's first-ever Oscars win, having been previously nominated for his roles in Chaplin and Tropic Thunder.

He was given the award by his Iron Man 2 co-star Sam Rockwell, in a reunion we loved to see. "I'd like to thank my terrible childhood and the academy in that order," he said before he also thanked his wife in a very touching moment, and he shouted out his co-stars. "What we do is meaningful, and the stuff that we decide to make is important."

Also starring the likes of Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer explores how the eponymous nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was tasked with setting up the Manhattan Project during World War II, and subsequently created the atomic bomb. Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, the man who set out to destroy Oppenheimer's reputation, in it, acting as an antagonist of sorts to Murphy's main man.

Outside of the acting categories, in which Blunt and Murphy also got nods, Oppenheimer was up for Best Costume, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Director, and Best Picture.

The Holdovers' Da'Vine Joy Randolph has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at this year's Academy Awards.

She was up against Oppenheimer's Emily Blunt, The Color Purple's Danielle Brooks, Barbie's America Ferrera, and Nyad's Jodie Foster. 

Randolph won for her performance as Mary Lamb in comedy-drama The Holdovers, which was directed by Alexander Payne and released to critical acclaim last fall in the US and early this year in the UK. 

The movie follows the students at a boarding school in '70s New England who are forced to stay on campus over the Christmas break as they have nowhere else to go, and Paul Giamatti plays Paul Hunham, the history teacher who's forced to chaperone them. 

Randolph plays the school's cook who's grieving the loss of her son, a former student who joined the military to fund his college education but was killed in the Vietnam War. Mary, Hunham, and student Angus (Dominic Sessa) form a dysfunctional trio trying to make the best of their less-than-ideal holiday experience, to humorous and touching effect. 

Giamatti is also up for an Oscar in the Best Actor category and the film is nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. Elsewhere this awards season, Randolph has also won a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Critics Choice Award for her performance.

Well there you have it, Oppenheimer is the big winner of the 2024 Oscars. After a lengthy awards season that saw Christopher Nolan's biopic dominate, the 96th Academy Awards proved no different. It was perhaps unsurprising given that Oppenheimer had the most 2024 Oscar nominations, but it still proved to be quite the landslide for the epic film. For how it all went down, as well as who won the other big awards and why Ryan Gosling stole the show, read on for our recap of everything that happened at the 2024 Oscars, as it happened.

It's a few hours to the event, let's get stuck into what you need to know.

The red carpet has already kicked off as some of the stars have started arriving. Among the early arrivals are Jamie Lee Curtis (last year's best supporting actress winner), Past Lives star John Magaro, and the Godzilla Minus One team who are nominated for best visual effects. They've even found a great way to honor the monster too, just look at those shoes!

While we get started, it’s a perfect time to take a look at the nominees. Leading the way is Oppenheimer, which has 13 nominations, closely followed by Poor Things at 11. There are also nods for The Holdovers, Past Lives, and Killers of the Flower Moon. 

In the acting categories, it's looking very tight, but let's take a rundown of who's vying for what.

In the best actor category, Bradley Cooper is up for Maestro; Colman Domingo is up for Rustin; Paul Giamatti is up for The Holdovers; Cillian Murphy is up for Oppenheimer, and Jeffrey Wright is up for American Fiction.

In the best actress category, Annette Bening is nominated for Nyad; Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon; Sandra Huller for Anatomy of a Fall; Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Emma Stone for Poor Things.

In the best supporting actress category, the nominees are: Emily Blunt for Oppenheimer; Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple; America Ferrera for Barbie; Jodie Foster for Nyad, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers.

And finally, the best supporting actor category features: Sterling K Brown for American Fiction; Robert De Niro for Killers of the Flower Moon; Robert Downey Jr for Oppenheimer; Ryan Gosling for Barbie, and Mark Ruffalo for Poor Things.

Then we've got the Best Director category, featuring Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall; Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon; Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer; Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things, and Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest.

Based on our Oscars 2024 predictions, we're thinking this one is Nolan's to lose at the moment...

I've been trawling the internet to find the best trivia about this year's Oscars. Here's some of my favorites:

• Films are getting lengthy! The average runtime of the Best Picture nominees are 138 minutes.
• John Williams has earned his 54th nomination this year for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, making him the most Oscar nominated person of all time.
• The Holdovers breaks a record as the first Christmas film nominated for Best Picture since Miracle on 34th Street.
• There are four Oscar-nominated couples this year: Justine Triet and Arthur Harari; Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas; Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, and Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley.

Another big arrival! Anatomy of a Fall star Messi is already seated inside and ready for the ceremony. This is good news as there had been some reports that talented four-legged actor would not be allowed to attend. Pawesome news.

Best director nominee Christopher Nolan has also arrived, ahead of the ceremony. He's looking like the one to beat at the moment, so this could be a big night for him and the rest of the Oppen-homies!

After a slight delay, the 96th Academy Awards are underway! We begin with a montage of the nominees for this year's ceremony.

Host Jimmy Kimmel is here and his monologue is predictably full of jokes, and no one is safe. Greta Gerwig gets a call out for her snub (as do the voters for not securing her nomination), a quip about Cillian Murphy's name, and a very on the nose Robert Downey Jr. joke.

And, of course, there's a quip about the length of this year's nominees...

After a lengthy opening monologue, the first award of the night is here: Best Supporting Actress! 

The winner of the first actor is The Holdovers' Da'Vine Joy Randolph. She was up against Oppenheimer's Emily Blunt, The Color Purple's Danielle Brooks, Barbie's America Ferrera, and Nyad's Jodie Foster. 

Next up is Animated Short Film and Animated Feature, awarded by Furiosa's Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy. 

The former goes to: War is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko

The latter goes to: The Boy and the Heron

The winners couldn't be there in person so Hemsworth and Joy accepted it on their behalf.

During the break between awards, let's reflect on Da'Vine Joy Randolph's incredibly moving speech. 

"God is so good," she said. "I didn’t think I was supposed to be doing this as a career. I started off as a singer, and my mother said go across the street to that theatre department – there’s something for you there."

Now it's time for the award for Best Original Screenplay. The winner is: Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet and Arthur Hariri.

Accepting the award, Triet said she thinks it will help her "through her midlife crisis". 

Keeping with the screenplays, the next award is Best Adapted Screenplay. The Oscar goes to American Fiction. 

Cord Jefferson picks up the award and in his speech he thanks the cast and crew of the film. "I've been talking a lot about how many people passed on this movie," he shared, adding that he doesn't want to seem vindictive, but wants Hollywood to give more people a chance. "Instead of making one $200 million dollar movie, try making 20 $10 million dollar movies."

We've got our first performance of the night. From Barbie, it's a beautiful stripped back version of 'What Was I Made For?' performed by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell. Aside from a pink spotlight, the staging is low-key, and earlier on the red carpet Eilish says this was intentional. She wants the emotional song to "speak for itself."

Make-up and hairstyling is next. Presenting the award is dynamite duo of Catherine O'Hara and Michael Keaton.

The winner of this one is Poor Things!

Straight onto the next award then, it's the Oscar for Production Design. Poor Things wins again! Shona Heath and James Price were there to accept the award.

Well, this isn't a moment we thought was coming, but John Cena is here and he's naked. Yes, you read that right. As part of Jimmy's monologue, he recalled a streaking moment in the past, and Cena was recruited for the bit. "The male body is not a joke," he said before giving out the award starkers.

Look we have a picture for you, but you might want to avert your eyes. Don't say we didn't warn you... 

Amid all of that, the Oscar for the Best Costume Design was given out. That one went to Poor Things, which has been on a great run for the past few categories. Could this mean the tide is turning in their favor? We'll have to wait and see...

We've got a second performance of one of the nominees for Best Original Song. From Killers of the Flower Moon, it's 'Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)'. It's performed by Osage songwriter Scott George and Osage singers. The performance had everyone on their feet with a standing ovation. 

Now it's time for International Feature Film. The Oscar goes to The Zone of Interest. 

Jonathan Glazer accepted the award for this one, giving a poignant speech. "Our film shows were dehumanization leads," he said. 

This win also marks the first time that the UK has won in this category.

We have a real-life Barbenheimer here as Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt unite on stage. Their exchange is probably the funniest moment of the ceremony so far, complete with kensplaining, as they introduce a segment on stunt performers.

It's another big one! It's time for Best Supporting Actor. Once again, five Oscar-winners are there to introduce all of the nominees. Ke Huy Quan, Mahershala Ali, Tim Robbins, and Christoph Waltz. We also got a great Iron Man 2 reunion as Sam Rockwell introduced Robert Downey Jr. 

And the winner is Robert Downey Jr.! He wins his first Oscar for the role in a fantastic speech, thanking his wife and co-stars. "I'd like to thank my terrible childhood and the academy in that order," he said before adding: "What we do is meaningful, and the stuff that we decide to make is important."

It's time for a Twins reunion: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are here to present the next award. The pair bond over both trying (and failing) to kill Batman, before directing their ire to the Dark Knight himself as they fired off insults at stone-faced Michael Keaton.

And the Oscar for Best Visual Effects goes to Godzilla: Minus One. Carrying an Oscar and a mini Godzilla, Takashi Yamazaki thanked everyone from those involved in the movie to Rocky Balboa in a moving speech. 

The next Oscar goes to Oppenheimer, who wins for Film Editing. Jennifer Lane accepted the award, marking her first win.

It's time for another performance. From American Symphony, Jon Batiste performed 'It Never Went Away'. A stripped back and beautiful performance from the Oscar nominee.

Now it's time for the Best Documentaries, presented by Barbie stars America Ferrera and Kate McKinnon.

The Last Repair Shop won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short.

20 Days in Mariupol won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

There's often a lot going on in the background of the Oscars – and this year is no different. However, we think this may be one of our all-time favorite Oscar moments. Just look at Messi the dog clapping.

Dune: Part Two star Zendaya announces the next award for Best Cinematography. And the Oscar goes to: Oppenheimer. Hoyte van Hoytema accepts the award, giving a moving speech where he championed celluloid. 

We're zooming through the awards now. Best live-action short goes to Wes Anderson for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. This is Anderson's first ever Oscar.

It's time for a tally update. At the moment, Oppenheimer and Poor Things are tied with three wins each. American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest, and The Holdovers all have one. There's not been any big surprises yet, either.

Can you feel the Kenergy? It's time for Ryan Gosling's performance of 'I'm Just Ken'.

False alarm! We've got the announcement for Best Sound now. The Oscar goes to The Zone of Interest. Accepting the award are Johnnie Burn and Tarn Willers.

Ryan Gosling's performance of 'I'm Just Ken' was something to behold. Wearing a pink sparkly suit, a cowboy hat, and sunglasses, he took to the stage with Ken dancers, much to the amusement of Margot Robbie. If that wasn't enough, we got Ken cameos, singalongs from Greta Gerwig and Emma Stone, and a guitar solo from Slash.

That was Ken out of Ken in my mind, can anything beat it? 

It's Best Original Song is coming up soon, and Gosling will be hoping to win. Before that though, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are here to announce the Oscar for Best Original Score. 

The Oscar goes to Oppenheimer! Ludwig Göransson accepts the award.

Now it's Best Original Song, which goes to Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell. This is the pair's second Oscar after winning previously for No Time to Die. "I had a nightmare about this last night," Eilish begins, before admitting that she was really not expecting to win. "I'm grateful for this song and the movie and how it made me feel."

Well, now it's time for the big four: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Picture. Will it be a Oppenheimer sweep? We'll soon find that out...

Before we get into those, it's time for the In Memoriam section. Among those honored this yeah are Michael Gambon, Andre Braugher, Jane Birkin, and Matthew Perry. Accompanying the section was a beautiful performance of 'Time to Say Goodbye' by Andrea Bocelli.

It's Best Actor time. Announcing the nominees were previous winners Brendan Fraser, Forest Whitaker, Ben Kingsley, Matthew McConaughey, and Nicolas Cage. 

And the winner is Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer! "I'm a little overwhelmed," he admits, going on to say that he's a "very proud Irishman". He dedicated the award to peacemakers everywhere.

Now it's best director time! And the winner is Christopher Nolan. Winning for Oppenheimer, this is Nolan's first Oscar. To celebrate the moment, he thanked his cast and crew, as well as emotionally thanking his wife and producing partner. "We don't know where this incredible journey is going from here, but to know that you think I'm a meaningful part of it means the world to me," he said of film history. 

Now, it's time for Best Actress. This was one of the most contested categories but the winner is: Emma Stone for Poor Things. This is her second Oscar after winning for La La Land.

"This is really overwhelming," the visibly emotional actor said as she accepted her award (and dealt with a minor wardrobe mishap).

It's time for the final award! Best Picture is being announced by legend Al Pacino!

It's Oppenheimer! The film has won seven Oscars, completing it's sweep with the Best Picture award. Christopher Nolan and his cast went up on stage to announce the award. 

Emma Thomas says that she's been "dreaming" about this moment for so long. "The reason this movie was the movie it was was Chris Nolan," she added. "The thing that's fantastic about this job is that it's about collaboration."

The big winner of the night was Oppenheimer, taking home seven awards. 

Poor Things won four Oscars, while The Zone of Interest won two. American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, and The Holdovers all won one.

Oppenheimer's win marks the return of the blockbuster winner at the Oscars. It's the highest-grossing Best Picture winner since The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King back in 2003.

Oppenheimer leads the way in the 2024 Oscars nominations, with other films up for gold including Poor Things, The Holdovers, Barbie, and more. 

Below, we've got everything you need to watch the red carpet and the ceremony. This year, timings are a little different to the usual, and the broadcast also has a new home in the UK. There's also the tricky matter of time zones, as the US clocks change on Sunday, but the UK is sticking with GMT until later in the month. Have no fear, though, because we've broken it all down right here.

How to watch the 2024 Oscars

The 2024 Oscars will be broadcast on ABC for viewers watching in the US, while UK viewers will be able to watch live on ITV (making a change from last year's event, which was shown on Sky Cinema). You'll also be able to stream online on ABC and ITV's streamers. 

What time is the 2024 Oscars ceremony 

This year, the 2024 Oscars ceremony timings are a little different. The ceremony will begin at 4pm PT/7pm ET/11pm GMT, which is an hour earlier than its usual time slot (don't forget that, in the US, the clocks are changing on March 10, but the UK will remain on GMT until later in the month, so the time difference is an hour shorter). If everything runs to time, expect the ceremony to end at 7:30pm PT/10:30pm ET/2:30am GMT. 

In the UK, Jonathan Ross will host the Oscars Live show from 10:15pm GMT.

What time is the 2024 Oscars red carpet 

Now, if you're like us and enjoy watching all the nominees arrive dressed to the nines, you'll be keen to watch red carpet coverage. This year, the red carpet pre-show, hosted by Vanessa Hudgens and Julianne Hough, kicks off at 3:30pm PT/6:30pm ET. In the UK, the red carpet will be live streamed on the streamer ITVX, beginning at 9pm GMT.

London Film Festival 2023 kicks off in a matter of weeks, and the full line-up has now been released. Big names from the festival circuit are making their way to the UK capital this October, like Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things, but there are also plenty of movies premiering at LFF. 

From Emerald Fennell's sophomore feature Saltburn to a Chicken Run sequel and the latest Studio Ghibli, these are the titles we're looking forward to the most. There's also Daniel Kaluuya's directorial debut, Austin Butler's follow-up to Elvis, and not one, but two, films starring Paul Mescal. 

Saltburn

Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell is back with her second feature, Saltburn, which makes its international premiere at London Film Festival. Barry Keoghan stars as Oliver, a student struggling to find his place at Oxford University when he's drawn into the intoxicating world of wealthy classmate Felix (Jacob Elordi). When Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at Saltburn, his family's estate, Oliver quickly finds that he may have bitten off more than he can chew. The film's cast also includes Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, and Archie Madekwe. 

The Kitchen

Daniel Kaluuya makes his directorial debut with The Kitchen, co-directing with filmmaker and architect Kibwe Tavares. Kane Robinson (better known as UK rapper Kano) stars as Izi, who lives in a dystopian version of London where social housing no longer exists and people live in slum-like high rises, like the Kitchen. When his young son suddenly becomes ill, Izi is forced to take desperate measures. The screening at London Film Festival will be the movie's world premiere. 

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget 

In Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Ginger and Rocky have found a peaceful island sanctuary for their flock after their death-defying escape from Tweedy's farm in the first movie. However, back on the mainland, a new threat faces all chicken-kind – and Ginger and co. must put their newfound freedom at risk to help. Thandiwe Newton and Zachary Levi will voice Ginger and Rocky, while Bella Ramsey will voice their daughter Molly. The movie is getting its world premiere at the festival. 

The Boy and the Heron

Hayao Miayzaki is back. The Studio Ghibili director's mysterious new film, which has had no trailer or official promotional material, follows a 12-year-old boy mourning the death of his mother and struggling to feel at home in a new town. When he encounters a talking heron who informs him that his mother is still alive, he embarks on a fantastical journey to try and find her. This will be the first UK screening of the film, which is said to be Miyazaki's final time in the director's chair. 

All of Us Strangers

Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott star in fantasy-romance movie All of Us Strangers from director Andrew Haigh. Scott plays Adam, a screenwriter who begins a relationship with his mysterious neighbor, Mescal's Harry. As their bond develops, Adam makes a trip to his childhood home, only to find that his dead parents are still alive and haven't aged in 30 years. Based on the Japanese novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada, the movie's cast also includes Claire Foy and Jamie Bell. 

Foe

Set 40 years in the future, Foe follows Junior (Paul Mescal) and his wife Henrietta (Saoirse Ronan). One day, a stranger (Aaron Pierre) arrives on their isolated farm, claiming to be from the government, and tells Junior that he has to leave his home for several months to work on a space program with the aim of moving humanity away from a rapidly deteriorating planet Earth. While he's gone, though, Henrietta is assured that she won't be alone. Lion helmer Garth Davis directs. 

The Bikeriders

 The Bikeriders follows the exploits of biker gang the Vandals, as told by one of their members, Kathy (Jodie Comer). Married to fellow member Benny (Austin Butler), Kathy struggles with his erratic behavior and unwavering allegiance to their leader, Jonny (Tom Hardy). As years pass and life in the Vandals becomes more dangerous, Kathy, Benny, and Jonny are forced to make choices about where, exactly, their loyalties lie. Directed by Jeff Nichols, the cast also includes Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, and Norman Reedus.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced several important dates, including the air date for the 96th Academy Awards.

The 96th Oscars ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 10 2024. Voting begins on January 11, closes on January 16, with the nominees announced to the public on January 23, 2024. As always, the Academy Awards will air live on ABC via global broadcast from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Everything Everywhere All At Once swept the 2023 Oscars, with Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert, collectively known as the Daniels, taking home the Oscar for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress, Jamie Lee Curtis took home the gold for Best Supporting Actress, Ke Huy Quan won for Best Supporting Actor, and Paul Rogers took home the award for Best Editing. Overall, the film was nominated for 11 Oscars and won 7 – including Best Picture.

The 2023 Best Picture nominees also included All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, and Women Talking.

Other notable 2023 Oscars moments include Brendan Fraser taking home Best Actor for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale. Fraser was up against Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Paul Mescal (Aftersun), Bill Nighy (Living), and Austin Butler (Elvis) for the award.

The 2023 Oscars was a night full of snubs and surprises, with some huge films walking away empty handed, while Everything Everywhere All at Once swept the major categories and dominated the evening's wins. 

Ke Huy Quan left not one dry eye in the house with his emotional speech – and heart-warming onstage reunion with Harrison Ford – while Jamie Lee Curtis also bagged a surprise win, and Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors made sure to give Angela Bassett a sweet shout out.

Everything Everywhere All at Once sweeps the major categories

It came as no surprise that Everything Everywhere All at Once walked away with the most wins of the night – the film had been a frontrunner for the entire awards race and was widely expected to bag some major wins. Its hugely successful evening saw the film take home the gold for Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Director (Daniels), and Best Picture.

But The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans go home empty handed

In a big surprise, two of the juggernauts of the race, The Banshees of Inisherin and the Steven Spielberg-directed The Fabelmans, went home empty handed. Banshees was up for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Colin Farrell), Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan), Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon), Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. 

The Fabelmans, meanwhile, was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design. 

Ke Huy Quan's heart-warming speech and Indiana Jones reunion gets everyone crying

The most wholesome win of the night went to Ke Huy Quan, who got the trophy for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Waymond in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Visibly emotional, Quan gave a seriously heartfelt speech. 

"My mom is 84 years old and she's at home watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar," Quan said in the Dolby Theatre. "My journey started on a boat, I spent a year in a refugee camp, and somehow, I ended up here, on Hollywood's biggest stage. They say, stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it's happening to me. This is the American dream."

He also thanked his "Goonies brother for life," Jeff Cohen, who is Quan's lawyer.

If that wasn't emotional enough, the actor later reunited with his Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom co-star onstage when Everything Everywhere All at Once won Best Picture. The duo enthusiastically embraced – see the moment below. 

Jamie Lee Curtis bags surprise first Oscar

Jamie Lee Curtis has been an icon of the screen for decades, but has never won an Oscar before. That all changed at the 2023 ceremony when she was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. It was a relatively surprising win in a competitive category, with Curtis's Everything Everywhere co-star Stephanie Hsu also nominated, alongside Angela Bassett, Kerry Condon, and Hong Chau. 

Angela Bassett doesn't win – but Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors give her a shout out

Angela Bassett was one of the favorites to win Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Although she didn't take home the gold, with the award instead going to Jamie Lee Curtis, she did get a sweet shout out from her Black Panther co-star Michael B. Jordan and his Creed 3 co-star Jonathan Majors. Check out the moment below.

Brendan Fraser comes out on top of close Best Actor race

Another fiercely competitive category was Best Actor, with the winner too close to call in the run up to the main event. Brendan Fraser ended up winning gold, though, for his performance in The Whale. He was up against Paul Mescal for Aftersun, Bill Nighy for Living, Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin, and Austin Butler for Elvis.

The Oscars 2023 winners have been announced – and it was a good night for Everything Everywhere All at Once. The multiversal movie won seven awards, including Best Picture, and filmmaking duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert also won Best Director. Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Asian woman to win Best Actress, while her co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis also took home acting awards.

Some of the night's other big winners included All Quiet on the Western Front, which received four awards, including Best International Feature Film. Meanwhile, Ruth Carter, the costume designer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, became the first Black person to win two Oscars – her first win was in 2019 for the first Black Panther movie.

Brendan Fraser has won the Oscar for Best Actor at the 2023 Academy Awards. 

The actor won for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale where he played Charlie, a reclusive English tutor suffering from severe health issues. His performance has won Fraser a lot of acclaim over the awards season so far, picking up wins at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Fraser has been on something of a comeback with the new movie, which marked a major return to Hollywood years on from his roles in The Mummy and George of the Jungle. Next up for the actor, he's teaming up with Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon.

Fraser was up against Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Paul Mescal (Aftersun), Bill Nighy (Living), and Austin Butler (Elvis) for the award.

The actor thanked co-star Hong Chau in his speech, and acknowledged the cast and crew as well as his family as well as tearfully addressing the hardships he's faced in Hollywood.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, The Whale follows Charlie (Fraser), a recluse living with severe obesity, who attempts to reconnect with his daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink) after having left his family for a man who later died.

Last year's Best Actor winner was Will Smith for King Richard. However, after the actor slapped host Chris Rock on stage at the event last year, he was given a 10-year ban from the event.

Michelle Yeoh has won the award for Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards.

She beat out Ana De Armas (Blonde), Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie), Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans), and Cate Blanchett (Tar).

Yeoh has won for her performance in A24's Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is also nominated for Best Picture. Yeoh's career spans multiple decades, making her big Hollywood debut in 1997 as Bond girl Wai Lin, the first ever Chinese Bond girl, in Tomorrow Never Dies. Yeoh had a recurring role in Star Trek: Discovery from 2017-2020, for which she earned a Saturn Award nomination for Best Guest-Starring Role on Television, and starred in Netflix's The Witcher: Blood Origin. The actor also recently completed filming on Avatar 3, and is currently filming Avatar 4 as well as Wicked: Part One and Wicked Part Two – where she will star as Madam Morrible.

"This is a beacon of hope," Yeoh said in her acceptance speech. "And ladies, don't ever let anyone tell you that you're past your prime."

Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert, collectively known as the Daniels, have won Best Picture at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Everything Everywhere All At Once follows a Chinese-American immigrant named Evelyn (Yeoh) who, while being audited by the IRS, must connect with parallel universe versions of herself in order to stop a powerful entity from destroying the multiverse. The movie grossed over $100 million at the box office against a $25 million budget, making it A24's highest-grossing movie to date. 

"We want to dedicate this to the mommys, to all the Moms, to my mom," Schienert said in his acceptance speech, acknowledging that the film is about a working-class mother.

"Genius emerges from the collective," Kwan added.

Their first A24 film, Swiss Army Man, which starred Daniel Radcliffe. Paul Dano, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, was released in 2016 to generally positive reviews and earned them the Sundance Award for Best Directing Duo. hey began their career as directors of music videos, including the popular DJ Snake and Lil Jon music video for the single "Turn Down for What," Foster the People, Tenacious D, and The Shins.

Both Ke Huy Quan and Yeoh won Golden Globe awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress, respectively. Quan also took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The film also won the Oscar Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay.

Ke Huy Quan has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 2023 Academy Awards. 

Quan wins for his performance as Waymond in the multiverse-bending drama comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once. Starring opposite Michelle Yeoh as her loving husband, Quan played multiple versions of the same role in the hit movie directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The win is no surprise as Quan has been winning most major awards, including a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

The major win also marks a huge comeback for Quan, who stopped acting for 30 years. After struggling to land roles following playing Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies, he went on to work as a stunt coordinator and assistant director before returning for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

"They say stories like this only happen in the movies," Quan said during his speech. "I can't believe this is happening to me. This is the American dream." The actor also thanked his mother and brother and his "Goonies brother for life," Jeff Cohen.

Quan was up against Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway), Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans), and Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin) for the award.

Last year's Best Supporting Actor winner was Troy Kotsur, who won for his role in the Best Picture-winning Coda.

Chicago-based Artist The Flippist has created a hand-drawn flip book that creatively goes through every single film that's been nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards. The video, appropriately titled, 'Every 2023 Best Picture Oscar Nominee Crammed in a Flipbook,' clocks in at just under a minute and was shared via Twitter. The video can be watched below.

The following films are nominated for Best Picture at the 95th Academy Awards: All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Fabelmans, Tar, Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, and Women Talking.

The nominees were announced live on January 24th by Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams. Jimmy Kimmel is set to host the ceremony this year, with a Countdown to the Oscars show hosted by Vanessa Hudgens, Lilly Singh, and Ashley Graham. Rihanna is also set to perform "Lift Me Up," from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, which is nominated for Best Original Song. Lady Gaga will, sadly, not be performing Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick as she is currently busy filming Joker: Folie a Deux with Joaquin Phoenix.

It was a big night for All Quiet on the Western Front at the BAFTAs 2023. The German war drama led the night's winners, taking home seven awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Banshees of Inisherin and Elvis came in joint second place, with four wins apiece. Banshees' Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon took home the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress awards, while Elvis' Austin Butler won Best Leading Actor. Elsewhere, Cate Blanchett won Best Leading Actress for TÁR. 

The awards ceremony has drawn criticism for its lack of diversity in this year's winners. Everything Everywhere All at Once was nominated in 10 categories, the same as The Banshees of Inisherin, but only took home the gong for Best Editing. Movies like The Woman King and Till, which were both directed by Black women and whose casts consisted predominantly of non-white actors, were also snubbed.

Viola Davis is an EGOT winner after winning a Grammy for the audiobook version of her autobiography Finding Me. That means the actor has won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. 

Davis won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2017 for her role in Fences and won an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder in 2015. She has won two Tony awards: one for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2001 for King Hedley II and another in 2010 for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her performance in Fences. Her Best Audiobook, Narration & Storytelling Recording Grammy finishes the quartet and launches her to EGOT status. 

"I wrote this book to honor the six year old Viola, to honor her, her life, her joy, her trauma, everything. And it has just been such a journey. I just EGOT!" Davis said during her Grammy acceptance speech, to massive applause. 

Davis' upcoming projects include Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes, as well as Air, set to be directed by Ben Affleck and focusing on the story of Michael Jordan's association with Nike. 

What is an EGOT?

An EGOT means an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony win. There are only 18 EGOT winners total, now including Davis. The rest of the list includes the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, and Robert Lopez – the latter is also the first person to win all four awards twice. 

The acronym was coined by Miami Vice's Philip Michael Thomas in 1984, though he has yet to be nominated for any of the awards.

The Sundance Film Festival always gets the year off to a flying start with new movies that you can look forward to being released over the coming months. There have been plenty of talking-point films at Sundance 2023, and, as usual, a couple of megabucks deals have been done (Fair Play and Flora and Son were each picked up for $20m apiece – look out for them on Netflix and Apple TV+ respectively).

So, now that the snow has settled, Total Film picks eight favorites from the festival, including another star-affirming turn from Jonathan Majors, an intimate relationship drama, your new favorite horror film, a must-see documentary and a sports movie unlike no other. It’s been a strong year, so we’ll also throw in some honorable mentions.

Cassandro

Gael García Bernal gets the role of his career (and becomes an early contender for next year’s Best Actor crop) in a feelgood sports movie based on a true story. It manages to avoid all the risible tropes you’d expect though, as gay luchador Saúl (García Bernal) takes on an exótico persona, determined to break the rule that these flamboyant drag characters can’t ever win in Mexican wrestling. There’s plenty of pathos amid the air-punching moments, and documentary director Roger Ross Williams (Life Animated) confidently grapples with heavyweight themes of family, legacy and sexuality in his dramatic debut.

Eileen

Lady Macbeth director William Oldroyd’s long-awaited sophomore feature debuted to critical raves. Despite drawing surface comparisons to Carol – mainly for the May-September attraction between an ingénue and a glamorous older woman, and the chilly, mid-century setting – Eileen proved to be its own unique beast. In ’60s Massachusetts, prison worker Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie) becomes besotted with the new staff psychologist Dr. Rebecca St. John (Anne Hathaway, on magnificent form). A late-breaking gear shift changes everything, but throughout, the production design and period detail are immaculate. If you haven’t read the book it's based on (by Ottessa Moshfegh, who has co-written the screenplay with Luke Goebel), go in cold.

Fair Play

Netflix snapped up this cruel, smart, water-cooler thriller for $20m and it’s easy to see why. Writer-director Chloe Domont’s voice recalls the verve of Emerald Fennell as she unpicks gender politics, consent and ambition in a bad romance as a pair of competitive financial analysts (Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich) secretly date and publicly fight when a promotion comes between them. Tracking toxic workplaces and masculinity, weaponized sexuality and the corrosive nature of jealousy, Fair Play has arch fun with performance (Eddie Marsan is a standout as a vile CEO), soundtrack and cinematography. And though it’s entrenched in Wall Street-speak (that impenetrable lingo of The Big Short and Margin Call), the conversation here is about gender double standards and the blade-sharp edge of love and hate. 

Magazine Dreams

What do you get if you channel incel rage, ‘Stan’ fandom and steroid abuse? Jonathan Majors’ amateur bodybuilder Killian Maddox – a damaged man whose heat-seeking crusade for body perfection and fame is dangerously wrapped up in parental trauma, casual racism and social disenfranchisement. Writer/director Elijah Bynum’s ability to evoke dry-mouthed anxiety in an audience is a thing of terrible beauty, the discomfort akin to the experience of watching preceding festival hits Uncut Gems or Calm with Horses. Heartbreaking and horrifying in equal measure, Majors’ fractured, feral performance (both physically and emotionally) is one that should be in awards conversation by the end of the year. 

Passages

There’s a thorny love triangle at the center of this intimate drama by Ira Sachs (Love is Strange), as capricious film-maker Tomas (Franz Rogowski) embarks on an affair with teacher Agathe (Adèle Exarchopoulos), much to the bemusement of his husband, Martin (Ben Whishaw). Sachs treats all of the characters empathetically, even as Tomas’ flighty ego runs roughshod over those closest to him. Sexually charged but delicately observed, it’s a film for grown-ups in every sense of the word; the cool Paris locations and trio of fine leads (Rogowski, in particular, is magnetic) only add to the appeal.

Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields

That child actor Brooke Shields was exploited during her career is a given, but this enlightening documentary challenges viewers in understanding exactly how, as well as highlighting audience complicity in that damage. Navigating Shields’ life in the spotlight from babyhood, this doc covers her relationships with Michael Jackson and Andre Agassi via frank confessions of her mother’s alcoholism, a sexual assault and post-natal depression. Lana Wilson’s clear-eyed examination of how society treats women taps the universal experience via her subject’s specific journey. And the message is clear when Shields discusses her own teen daughters; we must do better.

Talk to Me

The teens at the center of this Aussie frightener have clearly never seen a horror movie or read a thread on movie tropes. Otherwise they’d never be opening themselves up to spirits possessing them as a party game, pushing the ‘safe’ time a little longer for the lols… Opening with a truly shocking one-take tone-setter and ratcheting up the chills, Talk to Me taps into an exploration of the impact of trauma via unsettling visual effects and sudden, brutal violence. It also leaves an ending open for a possible franchise… no wonder A24 came calling.

You Hurt My Feelings

Nicole Holofcener and Julia Louis-Dreyfus reunite after Enough Said for another slice of recognizable mid-life angst as a writer in an ostensibly happy marriage inadvertently discovers that her husband (Tobias Menzies) secretly doesn’t like her latest tome. For his part, he’s wondering if he’s actually any good at his job as a couples therapist and her sister is irritated by the wealthy clients she interior designs for… Nagging dissatisfaction, the lies we tell through love and the bumbling along that constitutes a ‘happy’ life are explored via ugly light fittings, unwanted earrings and sock shopping. Delightfully witty.

Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick have made history at this year's Oscars. Regardless of the outcome of the awards ceremony, this is the first time more than one sequel has been nominated for Best Picture.

Of course, this isn't the first time a sequel has been nominated for Best Picture – The Godfather Part 2, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and Mad Max: Fury Road are just a few examples. The former two movies are the only sequels that have ever won the gong, however. 

Elsewhere, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery were also recognized in major categories – Angela Bassett was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first actor to receive an Academy Award nod for a Marvel movie, and Glass Onion received a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay.

2023 is also a big year for first-time nominees. Cate Blanchett is the only previous Oscar winner to be nominated in the acting categories this year, and 16 of the 20 acting nominees are first-timers: Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Paul Mescal, Bill Nighy, Brendan Gleeson, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Ke Huy Quan, Ana de Armas, Andrea Riseborough, Michelle Yeoh, Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Stephanie Hsu are all first-time Oscar nominees.

The Oscars 2023 nominations are here – and there were plenty of surprises, as well as a few snubs ahead of the 95th Academy Awards. Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the nominations with 11 nods, closely followed by The Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet on the Western Front, both with nine nominations. But what about what wasn’t nominated?

Well, to start with there were no female directors in the shortlist, despite Sarah Polley’s Women Talking being nominated for Best Picture. Then there's the fact that Nope and The Woman King missed out on some recognition – and those are just a few of the snubs from the big announcement.

We’ve broken down some of the biggest talking points from the Oscar nominations ahead of another eventful ceremony. And if you’re looking for more analysis, here’s how they matched up to our Oscars 2023 predictions too.

Surprise: Paul Mescal nominated for Aftersun

Aftersun has been getting plenty of much-deserved awards attention, even scoring several nods at the BAFTAs. But, it was still an outlier heading into the Academy Awards announcement – and while Charlotte Wells may not have landed a Best Director nomination, nor was the film recognized in any other categories, Paul Mescal’s turn as Calum is officially Oscar-nominated. The film follows a young father (Mescal) and his daughter (played by Frankie Corio) on a holiday to Turkey, but behind the sun-soaked fun, he’s hiding another side of himself from her. Mescal will be up against Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Austin Butler (Elvis), and Bill Nighy (Living) on the big night.  

Snub: Nope ignored

Jordan Peele's third directorial effort, Nope, was completely shut out from the nominations. Despite some seriously impressive sound design and visual effects, the sci-fi horror didn't pick up a single craft nod. Peele's first movie, Get Out, received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay in 2018, winning the latter – though his second film, Us, also didn't pick up any Academy Award attention either.

Surprise: Women Talking for Best Picture

Women Talking hasn't received much love so far this awards season, and an Oscars snub was predicted to follow after the film got no recognition in this year's BAFTA nominations. However, it was nominated for Best Picture at this year's Oscars, and is the only female-directed film in the category. Sarah Polley's hard-hitting drama about a group of women taking their fate into their own hands in a Mennonite colony stars Claire Foy, Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, and Ben Whishaw.  

 Snub: No female directors nominated

That's right, a grand total of zero women were nominated in the Best Director category this year. Of course, the Oscars are not renowned for their recognition of women filmmakers (only seven nominated for Best Director in its history), but this is a downturn from last year, when Jane Campion was nominated (and won), and from 2021, when Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell were nominated, with Zhao winning. 

The most prominent omissions from this year's category are Polley, director of Women Talking, and Aftersun helmer Charlotte Wells. Women Talking was nominated for Best Picture – the only movie in the category helmed by a woman – but Polley didn't get any recognition for directing. Wells' made her directorial debut in 2022 with Aftersun, and Mescal received an acting nod for his role as young single father Calum.

It's not just those two categories, either – none of the Best International Feature Film nominees were directed by women, while only one of the Best Animated Feature nominees was helmed by a female director (Turning Red's Domee Shi) and only two of the Best Documentary Feature filmmakers were female (All the Beauty and the Bloodshed's Laura Poitras and Fire of Love's Sara Dosa).

Surprise: Stephanie Hsu getting her deserved nomination

In a very happy surprise, Stephanie Hsu landed a well-deserved nomination for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. The actor plays both Joy Wang and the multiverse skipping Jobu Tupaki in the movie. After Hsu was shut out at the Golden Globes, fans will be very happy to see her nominated here. Indeed, when her name was called out during the announcement, there was an audible cheer all around. Of course, she faces some tough competition in the Best Supporting Actress category, against co-star Jamie Lee Curtis, Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Hong Chau (The Whale), and favorite Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever).

Snub: No Viola Davis or The Woman King

Viola Davis’ impressive performance as fierce Agojie leader Nanisca in The Woman King seemed like an Oscars shoo-in. However, neither her, nor the movie, were recognized in any of the categories. The well-reviewed blockbuster was popular with viewers and critics, and Davis has been garnering attention for her performance so this is a surprise. Thuso Mbedu’s and Lashana Lynch’s performances were also shut out, as was director Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Surprise: Andrea Riseborough’s last-minute Oscars campaign success

Andrea Riseborough’s nomination for To Leslie has built steam over the last month, with plenty of A-listers coming out in support of her. Despite the movie not landing a wide audience, her turn as a mother looking for redemption struck a nerve with many. Among those praising her were Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, and Edward Norton. "I’m astounded," the actor told Deadline of the news. "It’s such an unexpected ray of light. It was so hard to believe it might ever happen because we really hadn’t been in the running for anything else." 

Snub: Ana de Armas and Brian Tyree Henry getting spotlighted when their films didn't

Prior to its release, many assumed Andrew Dominik’s Blonde would be an Oscar contender a la Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis. Much like Austin Butler, Ana de Armas had undergone a complete transformation – nailing Marilyn Monroe’s voice, mannerisms, and even appearance. However, the film itself had an utterly divisive response and has received little to no attention this award season, save for de Armas earning a Golden Globe nomination.

Causeway, on the other hand, has received several nominations from various critics societies, with Brian Tyree Henry leading the noms for Best Supporting Actor, though the film and its actors received no attention at the Golden Globes. The film, directed by Lila Neugebauer, stars Jennifer Lawrence as a US soldier who returns home after experiencing a traumatic brain injury and connects with James (Henry), an auto mechanic who is also suffering from PTSD after his nephew was killed in a car accident on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.

Surprise: Triangle of Sadness for Best Picture

While it won the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, no one really expected Ruben Östlund’s wild, vomit-drenched black comedy Triangle of Sadness to "sneak" into this year’s Best Picture category. Opposite the likes of Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans, James Cameron’s sci-fi sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, and harrowing anti-war flick All Quiet on the Western Front, it stands out as the most daring of the Academy’s picks – and we’re all for its inclusion.

Centered on a bunch of rich folks, from influencer models and tech whizzes to arms dealers and "shit" salesmen, the movie sees its unlikeable protagonists luxuriate on a superyacht before rough seas cause them to crash on a remote island. There, the clueless "elite" find themselves answering to the much more competent staff who were serving them onboard. 

None of its stellar cast members – Dolly de Leon, Zlatko Burić, the late Charlbi Dean, Harris Dickinson, and Woody Harrelson, to name a few – received acting nods, but Triangle of Sadness earned spots in Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, too. Back in 2019, Parasite won the most prestigious accolade at Cannes before going on to bag the Oscars’ most prestigious gong. Could this do the same?

Snub: Decision To Leave omitted

Korean mystery-romance Decision to Leave didn't get any recognition in this year's Oscars nominations, despite the critical acclaim and other nods the film has received – helmer Park Chan-wook was nominated for Best Director and the movie got a nod in the Best Film Not in the English Language category at the BAFTAs and Park won Best Director at Cannes Film Festival. The movie follows an insomniac detective (Park Hae-il) who becomes obsessed with the prime suspect in a murder case (Tang Wei) and has been a hit with audiences around the world.

The Oscars may not be until March, but today was the big day for many. We now have the full shortlists of Oscar nominations, with plenty of shocks throughout.

Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the way with 11 nominations, while The Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet on the Western Front could also dominate come Oscars night with nine nominations each. There were also a few surprises in the acting categories as Ana de Armas (Blonde) and Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway) picked up nominations.

The countdown is on...

This year’s nominations are being announced by actor and writer Riz Ahmed and M3GAN star and producer Allison Willians. The pair will be announcing live from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills at 13.30 GMT. 

Ahmed himself is no stranger to Academy Awards, having nabbed an Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film in 2022 for The Long Goodbye. He also got a Best Actor nomination for Sound of Metal back at the 93rd Academy Awards. 

Williams was one of the main stars of Lena Dunham’s Girls on HBO and has made a name for herself in horror, starring in Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning Get Out.

Could 2023's Oscars be the Year of the Sequel? Don't bet against it. Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are all outside hopes to nab the Best Picture award. If all three make it on to the 10-strong Best Picture list, it'll be the first time in Academy history that multiple sequels have been nominated for the big prize in the same year.

We'll find out if that's the case in just under 30 minutes...

15 MINUTES TO GO

Competition is tight in the major categories, with a lot of different contenders vying for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. 

There are already some big favorites in the acting categories, with stars like Brendan Fraser, Ke Huy Quan, and Michelle Williams all expected to be nominated. But there are also plenty of underdogs as well – in particular we’ve been wondering whether Aftersun will get some Academy attention too. 

In terms of Best Picture, we’re expecting to see nominations going to frontrunners like Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, and The Fabelmans. With the expanded number of nominees, Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick are also potentials too. 

Finally the Best Director gong has some familiar names already in the running, like Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and Steven Spielberg. But don’t discount Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin), Todd Field (Tár), and Baz Luhrmann (Elvis), and Sarah Polley (Women Talking) just yet either. 

Of course, the Academy always has some surprises up its sleeve too, so there could be some unexpected nominations as well. Luckily, we haven’t got long to wait now…

Phew. We made it. Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the way with a whopping 11 nominations at this year's Oscars, which takes place on Sunday, March 12. All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin are level on nine noms apiece. You can scroll down for every single category below, including some shocks and surprises. 

The BAFTA 2023 nominations have been announced, and All Quiet on the Western Front leads the way with nods in 14 categories, including Best Film and Best Director. Golden Globes favorites The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once came in joint second place with 10 nominations each, while Elvis picked up nine nominations, including a Best Actor nod for Austin Butler. 

"Thank you BAFTA for this incredible honor for both myself and our film," the star of Baz Lurhmann's biopic said in a statement. "The three year journey to bring the one and only Elvis to life was the experience of a lifetime as an actor. It was a privilege to work alongside our amazing cast and crew each and everyday. Thank you, Baz, for encouraging me to take risks and including me in your extraordinary vision for this film."

This year was also a good year for recognizing smaller British talent, with Charlotte Wells' debut drama Aftersun receiving a lot of recognition – the film received four nominations, including Outstanding British Film and an acting nod for Paul Mescal. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande and Blue Jean also received nominations.

The BAFTA 2023 winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, which airs at 7pm on February 19 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. For more on the top releases of the past year, check out our picks of the best movies of 2022.

Brendan Fraser gave the most emotional speech of the night at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards as he accepted the Best Actor award for his performance in The Whale. After bursting into tears when his win was announced, Fraser tearfully addressed his acting comeback as he thanked the movie’s director.

"Darren Aronofsky, I was in the wilderness, and I probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs, but you’ve found me – and like all the best directors, you merely just showed me where to go to get to where I needed to be," he said, before sharing a powerful message. "If you, like a guy like Charlie, who I played in this movie, in any way, struggle with obesity, or you just feel like you’re in a dark sea. I want you to know that if you too, can have the strength to just get to your feet and go to the light. Good things will happen."

Fraser also praised his co-stars Hong Chau, Sadie Sink, and Ty Simpkins, as well as playwright Sam Hunter, in his heartfelt speech. "This movie, The Whale, it’s about love, it’s about redemption," he added. "It’s about finding the light in a dark place and I’m so lucky to have worked with an ensemble that is incredible."

Elsewhere, the big winner at the awards was Everything Everywhere All at Once, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Editing. Cate Blanchett won best actress for Tár, while Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery took Best Comedy and Best Ensemble.

On the TV side, Better Call Saul won Best Drama, with Bob Odenkirk winning Best Actor. Abbott Elementary won two awards, including Best Comedy. Check out the full list of winners below.
