In case you haven't heard, the Resident Evil movie rocks. Zach Cregger's singular adaptation of the beloved Capcom video games is a 95-minute shot of t-Virus adrenaline that does a better job of adapting the series to film than any of the previous seven movies, despite telling an original story and failing to include a single game character.

This caused something of a backlash ahead of release, leading Cregger to embark on a self-professed "apology tour" during interviews. But I'm here to tell you all that Cregger was right: more filmmakers need to be brave enough to tell their own stories when adapting video games, and stay true to the source material in other ways, even if it means leaving fan-favorite figures behind.

Despite taking place "on the periphery" of Resident Evil 2, on the day of the t-Virus outbreak, Cregger's Resident Evil movie doesn't feature the iconic likes of Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Nemesis or any of the myriad characters and monsters we know are running around the streets of Raccoon City at this exact time. Instead, it focuses on medical courier Bryan, an average Joe who's comically out of his depth when faced with seemingly unkillable zombies and even gnarlier mutated creatures. His simple goal: to get the basis of an antidote for the infection from A to B.

The movie's only acknowledgement of Resident Evil's outrageously convoluted lore is a brief moment of exposition revealing that (who else but) the Umbrella Corporation is behind the t-Virus outbreak. This side of Resident Evil, along with the well-explored characters, evidently wasn't of interest to Cregger.

And who can blame him – we had six Milla Jovovich-led movies featuring cosplay versions of familiar Resident Evil figures in daft fan-fiction scenarios that sort of looked a bit like the games if you squinted. These movies were at least fun, which can't really be said about the disastrous 2021 movie Welcome to Raccoon City – an adaptation so misguided in its efforts to please fans that it featured originally cut character Lisa Trevor, but was somehow the worst of the lot.

Instead, Cregger, a clearly passionate Resident Evil fan who also happens to be one of the most accomplished and exciting contemporary filmmakers, has adapted Resident Evil in the ways that matter: translating the tone, atmosphere, structure, absurdity, and the you-know-it-if-you-see-it feel of the games to film in a way that feels practically groundbreaking.

Lone survivor

Everyman Bryan might be a new kind of protagonist for a Resident Evil story (more akin to Ethan at the start of 7 than one-man-army Leon), but the idea of following a single isolated character through a nightmare gauntlet is standard operating procedure for the series. No time for idle chit-chat when you've got mutated beasties to kill and arcane sub-objectives to complete.

There's also the undeniable fact that most of the games simply aren't suited for a 1:1 translation to film. Resident Evil 2 might be an all-time classic, but Leon or Claire running laps around the RPD building to stay out of Mr. X's reach is unlikely to lend itself to compelling cinema. And the less said about the B-movie stories and dialogue, the better.

Despite his passion for the series, Cregger is smart enough to know that if you want to experience Resident Evil 4, the best way to do that will always be to play the game. This has long been the case for video game adaptations – particularly on the big screen – which have typically loosely adapted the stories and the characters out of necessity in a way that satisfies no one. Beyond a handful of specific examples – The Last of Us on TV among them – that truly lend themselves to faithful adaptation, it's almost always going to be the case that using the worlds as a jumping-off point for new stories, while honoring the ethos of the games, will yield more satisfying results for fans and newcomers.

We're living through the golden age of video game adaptations, akin to the position superhero cinema was in around the early days of the MCU. And just like superhero cinema was no longer treated purely as disposable kids' fare by a generation of filmmakers who grew up reading comics, as a generation of filmmakers who grew up playing video games move into positions of power in Hollywood, the approach to adapting them has become increasingly sophisticated. There have already been a number of successful examples on TV, including Fallout and Arcane, neither of which adapts specific stories from the games, but still manage to stay true to their respective worlds. Resident Evil is the first true success story on film, at least one put out by a major studio.

Of course, there are examples of this approach not working out in the past. 2016's Assassin's Creed, starring Michael Fassbender, wasn't a million miles away from Cregger's Resident Evil in its use of a new cast of characters in a familiar setting and scenario. But without casting aspersions, it's fair to say that Assassin's Creed director Justin Kurzel – the extremely accomplished filmmaker behind the likes of Snowtown and The True History of the Kelly Gang – probably didn't understand Assassin's Creed in the same way that Cregger does Resident Evil, and it showed.

A new way forward

The discourse around Resident Evil has been a bummer to see as a long-serving fan of the games and an equally big fan of Cregger. Here, at long last, a series as storied and full of potential as Resident Evil has enlisted a filmmaker with the vision and talent to craft something that lives up to the legacy of the games – which he accomplished and then some – and the instinct of many is to tear the movie down because it isn't a 1:1 translation. I, for one, don't want to see the same thing again, simply in live action; that experience is open to me again anytime by booting up my PlayStation. I'll always opt for something new, as long as it feels true to the world it's bringing to the screen.

It's too early to say whether or not filmmakers will learn the lessons of Cregger's Resident Evil. We've yet to get a proper glimpse of Wes Ball's The Legend of Zelda movie, though given comments from Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto recently that the movie would be inspired by the history of the whole series, and some sneaky set photos that appear to feature a mix of costumes from different eras, I'll be surprised if it's a faithful rendering of a specific entry. Better it captures the spirit of the series first and foremost, followed by any specifics which support that.

As for Resident Evil, despite saying he's had ideas for a sequel, it doesn't seem all that likely Cregger will return – and who can blame him. While many consider the ending abrupt, you can't deny that it closes the loop on Bryan as a character, and serves as a tragic origin story for a hulking Raccoon City sub-boss; you could almost imagine Leon stumbling across his voice message for Michelle in Raccoon City General Hospital's subterranean car park before going on to take him out with a few well-placed magnum shots to that bulging eye. As far as adapting a video game goes, Cregger has achieved an easy S+ rank.

It's a movie-heavy week on our streaming recommendation list this weekend as several big new films hit the platforms. We've not only finally got the chance to see Toy Story 5 on the small screen but there are also two brand-new movies hitting Netflix and Prime Video that could not be more different.

As well as feature-length offerings, Apple TV has you covered on the comedy front with Brothers. The new mockumentary-style drama stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as potential half-siblings in a fun sitcom take on the wild true story. Then over on HBO Max, Sharon Horgan's long-awaited return to TV hits HBO Max with Youth.

So while it might be a big week over at the theaters (hello, Avengers: Endgame Encore), there's also plenty to kick back at stream at home as well. So let's get stuck into our big streaming recommendations below.

Toy Story 5

Toy Story's triumphant return has finally arrived on streaming after being released in theaters earlier this year. This time around, it's Jessie who takes center stage as the leader of the toys in the wake of Bonnie's new obsession with Lilypad, a tablet consuming all of her time.

It's a timely topic as technology continues to become a bigger part of childhood, but Toy Story 5 also contains everything you would expect from a Pixar movie: humor, heart, and a cracking soundtrack. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack return to the voice cast in a film that honors the originals while taking the franchise somewhere new.

Brothers

The real story that inspired Apple TV's new comedy series is pretty wild. A few years ago, Matthew McConaughey's mother revealed that he had a relationship with Woody Harrelson's dad around the time when Matthew was conceived. While he hasn't taken a paternity test, this could mean that the two Hollywood stars and True Detective co-stars could be half brothers.

This new show takes this a step further as the pair decide to live together with their families at McConaughey's Texas ranch after Harrelson's daughter's wedding falls apart. Reviews have praised the chemistry between the two leads, calling it a charming watch. The first two episodes are out now with new ones released weekly.

The Love Hypothesis

Prime Video are continuing their run of rom-coms with The Love Hypothesis, a fake dating romance set at Stanford University. It follows Ph.D. candidate Olive Smith as she pretends to be dating professor Adam Carlsen in order to convince her best friend she no longer has feelings for their mutual friend. Carlsen agrees in order to improve his grumpy reputation at the college and help him secure funding for his grant by proving he's putting down roots in California.

The movie is a lot of fun with Tom Bateman and Lili Reinhart's chemistry as the lead couple selling the story. There's also a strange origin story too, which may pique your interest. The novel it's based on by Ali Hazelwood actually started life as an alternate university fanfiction about Kylo Ren and Rey from Star Wars. The connections don't stop there either as the leading man is actually played by Daisy Ridley's real-life husband in a fun link to the saga.

Youth

Sharon Horgan is back again with another new hilarious TV show. The brilliant mind behind Pulling, Catastrophe, and Bad Sisters has turned her hand to exploring dating in your 50s. Her character is divorcée navigating a new world of romance while also juggling a publishing career and a teenage son. Rupert Friend, Sharlene Whyte, and Aran Murphy all star alongside her as well as cameos from Harriet Walter, Freddie Fox, and Damian Lewis.

The first season has already landed a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score as well as critics have been calling it hilarious and vulnerable in equal measure. Two episodes are out now with new ones dropping every week on HBO Max.

Unabomber

Former child star Jacob Tremblay takes on his darkest role yet in the Netflix movie Unabomber. Directed by Janus Metz Pedersen, who has previously helmed episodes of Andor, the new film centers on the true story of Ted Kaczynski, a domestic terrorist who was active for 20 years through a nationwide mail bombing campaign in the United States.

The film flits between two timelines: Kaczynski's time at Harvard and his manhunt many years later. Alongside The Little Mermaid star Tremblay, Unabomber also stars Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley, and Annabelle Wallis.

It looks like DC's upcoming animated feature Dynamic Duo is moving forward, as its lead characters Robin and Red Hood have reportedly been cast.

According to Deadline, Dynamic Duo has cast How to Train Your Dragon star Mason Thames as Dick Grayson and Ghostbusters: Afterlife's Logan Kim as Jason Todd, aka the two Robins. The rest of the voice cast includes The Running Man's Lee Pace as Red Hood One, and Boardwalk Empire star Steve Buscemi as Red Hood Two.

The animated film is set to follow the two Robins who fought alongside Batman, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, telling their respective origin stories. Grayson is the Robin commonly associated with Batman and is also part of the supergroups Teen Titans and The Justice League. However, Todd, otherwise known as Red Hood, became the second Robin and Batman's sidekick after Grayson joined The New Teen Titans.

At the same time, the movie has been pushed back from its original June 30, 2028 release date to September 22, 2028. This is due to a Warner Bros. release date shake-up following its ongoing merger. As of now, it looks like Warner Bros. is being sold to Paramount, so Dynamic Duo may have been pushed back, as Paramount already has the Call of Duty movie releasing on June 30, 2028.

But, according to Deadline, Warner Bros. distribution believes that the new date will work in the DC film's favour, as it is "a good back-to-school animated feature slot for not just K-12 but also teens and college kids. The movie has the potential to hit the Spider-Verse crowd."

Dynamic Duo is not part of James Gunn's DCU Chapter One, but it is being made under The Batman director Matt Reeves' production company, 6th & Idaho. The script is written by Matthew Aldrich, with animation studio Swaybox's Arthur Mintz directing.

The crowdfunding campaign for a Lord of the Rings RPG has proven to be so popular that it's needed to create all-new stretch goals to keep up.

Earlier this week, publisher Free League launched a Backerit page for a couple of new books along with a rules update to The One Ring, the popular Lord of the Rings RPG it's been running since 2022. However, the campaign was so popular that it smashed its crowdfunding goal by 32 times in less than a day, and has now reached $2 million in pledges. Because it only provided stretch goals up until the $1.4m mark, the team has had to create a host of new ones – and even those look as though they'll be surpassed before long.

"As the initial stretch goals were unlocked quicker than we could imagine, we have now added five more goals, trying to strike a good balance between what has been requested and what is doable without jeopardizing the timeline of the entire project," Free League writes in an email to anyone that's followed the campaign. These new stretch goals range from bonus maps to an all new location.

The latter is probably the most interesting; it will take us to The Tower of Triumph in Umbar. This is a place we've only ever heard about in passing, so being able to go there is tantalizing. That's because it's a stronghold of humans that serve Sauron where "seers and sorcerers of the city keep watch upon Gondor, and work many dark designs".

The most recent stretch goal to be unlocked is optional rules for setting up camp. These are made to complement instead of replace the existing travel mechanics, and "can be used to enliven shorter traveling sequences, or whenever the Company’s choice of campsite and preparations for the night are likely to matter."

Two more stretch goals remain: a digital art compilation unlocked at $2.2m, and a map of Bree in the new Core Rules book that becomes available at $2.4m. Considering how quickly we hit the previous marks (the pledge number has literally jumped several hundred dollars while I've been writing this story), I doubt it'll take long to reach them.

While we're on the subject of Middle-earth, these new Warhammer Mordor Orc models are reeling me back into the Lord of the Rings wargame again.

The final trailer for Clayface has arrived, and it gives us our best look yet at the upcoming DCU horror, including a glimpse of his final form.

The latest trailer focuses less on how Hagen becomes Clayface, and more on the violent, tragic aftermath. Evoking the likes of Joker, it's clear that Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) is a victim of tragic circumstances in a cruel and unforgiving Gotham, as his ability to change his appearance pushes him towards murderous villainy. Plenty of gnarly body horror too; if you don't wince at the sight of Hagen about to cut open his eye flaps (gross) with a pair of nail scissors on a bumpy flight, you're made of sterner stuff than us.

Clayface is the next film in the DCU Chapter One, and stars Tom Rhys Harries as the movie star turned shapeshifting gloop monster. In extended DC media, Clayface is typically depicted as a Batman villain, though the DCU could be doing things a little differently, as Hagen has already popped up in the canon DC animated series Creature Commandos (and, yes, they are the same character).

Clayface is something a little different for the DCU, as it's smaller scale and, by the looks of it, a great deal more unsettling than any DCU feature or show to date. Director James Watkins (who helmed the excellent Eden Lake, and the recent Speak No Evil remake) has cited Sam Raimi's Evil Dead movies as an inspiration, which is all we really need to hear.

While the trailer gives us our best look yet at Hagen's gloopy final form, don't expect a clear shot of Clayface to sneak out before release, as Watkins confirmed a couple of months back it won't appear in marketing materials. "You don't want to show the shark," Watkins said. "I think people give away too much… I believe in the power of mystery and the power of suggestion and the power of people putting two and two together. I think it's more fun." Harries, however, has confirmed that it indeed looks "fucking sick".

May the odds be ever in your favor as we return to Panem for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The upcoming movie acts as a prequel to the original saga, telling Haymitch Abernathy's tragic origin story. Katniss' mentor in the original movies is a jaded man from his own experiences in the arena, and this story sums up exactly why that is.

Based on the novel by Suzanne Collins, the new movie brings back director Francis Lawrence, who has helmed all of the Hunger Games movies apart from the first one, alongside an all-new cast. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters on November 20, 2026.

This is only a year and a half on from the release of Suzanne Collins' novel, which is pretty tight turnaround for Hollywood. However, it seems like the rights for the movie were confirmed when the book was announced, allowing for a quick adaptation.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping plot details

It's expected that Sunrise on the Reaping will be very faithful to Suzanne Collins' book, which focuses on 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy.

24 years before the first film, he is selected to compete in the 50th Hunger Games for District 12. However, this year is different: as a Quarter Quell, two tributes are sent from each district to compete as President Snow and Plutarch Heavensbee attempt to make it the most dramatic year yet.

The film will follow Haymitch's life just before he's selected, where he lives with his younger brother and mother and often sneaks off to meet his girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. His world gets turned upside down when he's selected as one of the tributes, bringing him to the Capitol and into the orbit of a whole load of familiar faces.

But if you know anything about Haymitch, you know he does not play by the rules. Determined not to go without a fight, he sets his sights on bringing down the games from within.

Director Francis Lawrence has promised they mostly won't be holding back with the darkness of the novel either. "What’s great about Suzanne's writing is that she pulls no punches," he told Entertainment Weekly. "The only thing we have to do in the movies is make them PG-13. So there's certain things she describes in the book that I could never put in the movies. There's a character holding the head of a child at one point in the book, and that’s just not something you can do in a PG-13 movie."

Do the original Hunger Games cast appear in Sunrise on the Reaping?

Just a quick warning about this section: we're about to discuss the ending of the novel. If you want to go in fresh to the movie, scroll past here to the next section.

At the end of Sunrise on the Reaping, there is an epilogue set after the events of the original series. In it, Haymitch speaks with Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark about his history, and they speak about how he remembers Lenore Dove, whom he lost all those years ago.

There's been no official confirmation, but it has been reported by The Hollywood Reporter that this will feature in the film adaptation too. This means that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their roles, a decade on from Mockingjay Part 2. It's not clear yet whether they'll be joined by original Haymitch Abernathy star Woody Harrelson or if the film will change up this scene a bit.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping trailer

There have been several The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping trailers ahead of the movie's release. The first teaser gave us our first look at the bright, colorful arena as well as Ralph Fiennes' take on President Snow. The characters work together to try and break the arena from the inside out. "We're not animals to kill for their entertainment," Haymitch says.

The second trailer gives us a better look at the carriage scene, which fans of the books will know is one of the story's darkest moments. As well as this, you see Haymitch stand up to President Snow, something that will be a source of great pain for him in the future.

After The People Vs. Gorilla Grodd star Skyler Gisondo claimed last week that the upcoming DCU true-crime mockumentary takes place before the events of Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, DCU boss James Gunn has taken to social media to clarify its place on the DCU timeline.

Responding to a report on Threads, Gunn said: "Overall in continuity, it's after MoT (and won't come out until then)." This certainly makes sense as, for the most part, the DCU is unfolding in chronological order as each new project releases; though, notably, Clayface is set to take place before the events of Superman.

However, there is one small wrinkle that Gunn notes when it comes to The People Vs. Gorilla Grodd: "I mean it's a true crime series, so it jumps all over the place." Expect the show to jump around in time, in other words, which could mean we learn a lot about the state of the DCU over the years. In all likelihood, this helps explain the many Gorilla Grodd leaks that have popped up online in recent weeks, which show Gorilla Grodd attending college (and singing acapella).

The People Vs. Gorilla Grodd is one of the more unusual projects on the DCU Chapter One slate. Starring Gisondo's Jimmy Olsen, it'll see the Daily Planet journalist and rizzed-up ladies' man investigating the 2021 conviction of Gorilla Grodd, who was sentenced to a stint in Stryker's Island Penitentiary after murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City.

Created by Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda – the brains behind hilarious Netflix true-crime mockumentary series American Vandal – The People Vs. also stars Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd. Tatro previously appeared as the accused in the first season of American Vandal, and most recently popped up during Scream 7's bloody pre-title sequence.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Gisondo discussed his appearance in buzzy A24 drama Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson, and the process of returning to play Jimmy Olsen soon after. "It's quite a change-up," Gisondo said. "I actually went straight from – not straight, [after Primetime] the next thing was Focker-in-Law... which is just, tonally, a very different movie.

"Now being back doing Jimmy Olsen, and [The People v. Gorilla Grodd] is like a mockumentary, true crime thing, so it's very Lance [Oppenheim]-adjacent, and it is funny." Rob said something in one of our interviews where, in The Odyssey, he hears a little bit of Chris Hansen's voice sometimes, and you're like, 'Oh right, [...] I gotta shake that off...'

Days after Daredevil's last hurrah was announced, Kingpin star Vincent D'Onofrio has spoken out on Daredevil: Born Again ending with season 3.

"We so enjoyed bringing Daredevil: Born Again to you all," said D'Onofrio on Twitter. "You stuck with us, and I like to think we stuck with you. We have the final Season, season 3 heading your way next year with some very cool stuff. Much love to all who have been supportive. I love that character Fisk. Always will."

D'Onofrio was first introduced as crime lord Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, in Netflix's 2015 Daredevil, but has since made appearances in Marvel projects Hawkeye, Echo, and Born Again.

The news broke on Monday, September 21, after weeks of cancelation rumours. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has also quietly parted ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane, "whose contract was up and was not renewed." This means that despite filming the third installment, Scardapane will seemingly not be part of post-production.

Daredevil: Born Again season 3 wrapped filming in August, and is reportedly already in the final stages of production. Marvel has yet to share an official synopsis, but thanks to leaked set images, we know that Elektra is set to return, somehow from the dead. Plus, we'll finally get the Defenders reunion we have all been waiting for, with Mike Colter's Luke Cage and Finn Jones's Iron Fist joining Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 ended with Matt Murdock going to prison after turning himself in and Fisk accepting a deal to leave New York City. Mr. Charles and Bullseye also seemingly left, and Jessica Jones finally reunited with Luke Cage.

Ever since it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. was returning to the MCU in a new role as Victor Von Doom, speculation has been rife about how his character will be linked to Tony Stark. Now some fans think we might have an answer, thanks to the Avengers: Endgame Encore footage.

We'll be getting into spoilers from the movie's post-credits scenes below so if you haven't seen them at the theater yet, wait before reading on.

In the original Avengers: Endgame credits, the Russos included a hammer hitting on iron noise right at the very end, calling back to Tony Stark making his Iron Man suit in the first movie. In the Encore rerelease, this is coupled with images of Doctor Doom forging his mask.

While it could just be a small nod to the new villain, some Marvel fans have been wondering if this is actually setting up a major link between Tony Stark and Doom. The theory is that we could be witnessing a parallel origin story for Doom that looks very similar to Tony's, just with a few differences. This would mean that Doom is actually a Tony Stark variant, which would explain them sharing the same face.

Posting on Twitter, one wrote about the post-credits scene: "And I’m supposed to believe they’re not just gonna make him a Tony Stark variant." Another added: "So its basically just a variant of tony in like a completely different timeline, and its his villain arc." A third simply put: "So this is basically confirmation that this IS an iron man variant."

This would be far from the first time we've seen a variant in the MCU, and we're about to meet even more in Doomsday when the original X-Men cast appear in the film. Given another of the post-credits scenes directly set up the fact that the multiverse is collapsing, I'm definitely expecting a lot of multiversal madness in the upcoming film.

Adding fuel to this theory are the Russo brothers comments earlier this year. "I'm not going to give away anything. It will all make sense when you watch the movies," Joe Russo said of the fact they share the same face. Expect it to be explored at some point in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars then.

It might have been seven years since Avengers: Endgame was released, but the Encore edition is set to top the box office again this weekend.

According to Variety, Endgame Encore is tracking to earn $25-28 million dollars at the domestic box office across its opening weekend. It's going up against Resident Evil, which is on course for $24-26 million. So, it could be a tight race.

A big re-release for Endgame could also push it into surpassing James Cameron's Avatar to retake its crown as the highest-grossing movie of all time. Spider-Man: Brand New Day recently joined the top 10, passing Cameron's Titanic.

Competing for third place this weekend are Brad Pitt-starring The Heart of the Beast (projected for $17-20 million), Robert Pattinson's Primetime ($17-20 million), and animated adventure Forgotten Island ($15-17 million).

Avengers: Endgame Encore directly sets up this December's Avengers: Doomsday with new footage. Thanks to the movie's Korean release, the footage has already hit the internet – and it does indeed feature some major revelations.

"It's gonna connect the story of the two movies," Doomsday director Joe Russo has said of the re-release. "There's a natural progression from Endgame into Doomsday, which is also inclusive of all the other stories that have been playing out. I think it's required viewing for following the story in Doomsday."

Avengers: Endgame Encore arrives this September 25, while Doomsday lands on December 18.

According to Spider-Man: Brand New Day co-writer Chris McKenna, the new MCU movie almost went down a completely different path from the metamorphosis story that was delivered, revealing that we could have gotten a British Peter Parker.

"We went down some different roads," said McKenna on The Bulwark podcast. "At one point, we had him putting on a British accent. So it would have been Tom’s British accent, but Tom from Queens pretending he’s British."

McKenna explained that the scene involved Tom Holland's Parker running into Zendaya's MJ, but because her memory was wiped at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, he had to introduce himself. However, rather than pretending to be 'Maynard' like he does in Brand New Day, McKenna explains that the alternate idea had Parker pretending to be from across the pond. But it was all about "juggling personas."

McKenna continues, "So he meets MJ a few years later. The circumstances are that he's Spider-Man, and he's talking to her, but basically he has to fall in with her to get in on this mystery. But in that version, he's not Spider-Man. He's pretending to be someone else. Ben Reilly. But he's Ben Reilly, a British person, who then falls in with her to find out what is going on with something that she knows about."

In Marvel comics, Ben Reilly is a Spider-Man variant and a clone of Parker who was created by the supervillain the Jackal to torment Spidey. But Reilly later broke free from the baddie and went on to become a hero known as the Scarlet Spider. Reilly, however, is not British, so the accent idea was probably a little dig at Holland's nationality. But Brand New Day still makes light of this, as when Ned shares his Spidey tracking with Parker, ahem, Maynard, he poses the idea of Spider-Man being British.

However, you may be thinking to yourself, 'Wait, where have I heard the name Ben Reilly recently?' Well, that is the alias used by Nicolas Cage's Spider-Noir in the Prime Video series. Although Amazon's Spider-Noir series is separate from the MCU, and Noir's real name in the comics is Peter Parker, both Brand New Day and the TV show mentioning different versions of Ben Reilly may have caused some confusion.

Robert Downey Jr. will soon be returning to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday as a new character. Now the actor has revealed what was behind the decision to join as Victor Von Doom, and it seems like he has some big ambitions.

Speaking on the Avengers: Endgame special of the Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday Official Podcast, Downey Jr. was asked about his return by Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani.

"What brought me back was the opportunity to redefine the genre of superhero movies so that's a tall order," he replied. "You know Mr. Feige, you know the group, we love a challenge and we figured, 'Wow let's mix it up and see if we can get ourselves excited, because if we're excited the audience will soon follow.'"

Despite the success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the star is right that the superhero fatigue has been setting in with audiences. A whole streak of MCU movies failed to perform well with audiences and underperformed at the box office in the lead up to the release of Doomsday.

Doomsday has already been tracking well in pre-sales, breaking records before it's even hit theaters. Hopes are high then that this might be a turning point for the MCU, as Feige has already announced a change of strategy with the release of fewer projects between its release and the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars.

Downey Jr. will be playing iconic villain Doctor Doom in the new film, who will be the toughest adversary yet for the Avengers. Some new teases for the film are also part of the rerelease of Avengers: Endgame, which is in theaters around the world now.

Primetime director Lance Oppenheim wanted to capture the absurdity of Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator in the new true crime-inspired drama.

"I like the idea of sort of riffing on the reality of the show and the original show to me felt like a mixture of horror and real-life horror and comedy, absurdity in a way," Oppenheim tells GamesRadar+. "The way that Chris Hansen would find these guys who were trying to do something absolutely horrific, and he would sort of put them in the position of this bizarro experiment he had created where he had actors, adult actors pretending to be children."

In the series To Catch a Predator, which aired on NBC from 2004 to 2008, journalist Chris Hansen worked with an advocacy group named Perverted Justice whose members pretended to be minors in order to target men who solicit sex in online chatrooms. Rather than tell the story of Hansen's life or how the show came to be, the movie fictionalizes the Esquire article, "Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die," which details the hyper-controversial sting operation that resulted in the suicide of a Texas DA.

Each episode of the show saw a real-life predatory male meet up with a decoy at a fake home, only to be captured by police after being interrogated by Hansen. In Primetime, we get a look at Hansen's obsession with both justice and TV ratings... and see the way he psyches himself up before going out to confront each criminal on camera. The material is so dark that the overall comedic nature makes perfect sense in terms of tone and narrative structure... though it devolves into a kind of quiet devastation as the movie goes on.

Continues Oppenheim: "Cookies and pepperoni pizzas and sweet tea and these houses that looked very normal, but somehow when you put a camera in them and shoot them in the way they did... it looks like all the images were beamed in from outer space, from Mars. So I wanted to get that sense down. I really wanted to get that feeling where everything felt a little off, and I wanted it to feel like a fever dream that kind of turned into like a nightmare, I guess."

Skyler Gisondo says starring in the true crime drama Primetime helped him prepare for his return to the DCU in the much less intense The People v. Gorilla Grodd.

"It's quite a change-up," Gisondo tells GamesRadar+ when asked about making the switch from his Primetime character Dan back to the effortlessly cool, but equally plucky, Jimmy Olsen. "I actually went straight from – not straight, [after Primetime] the next thing was Focker-in-Law... which is just, tonally, a very different movie."

"Now being back doing Jimmy Olsen, and [The People v. Gorilla Grodd] is like a mockumentary, true crime thing, so it's very Atlanta-adjacent, and it is funny," Gisondo continues. "Rob said something in one of our interviews where, in The Odyssey, he hears a little bit of Chris Hansen's voice sometimes, and you're like, 'Oh right, [...] I gotta shake that off...'

"But no, it's been good. And Primetime was great. You know, I feel more prepared for this show now, operating this more, like, vérité kind of thing."

Primetime, directed by Lance Oppenheim, stars Robert Pattinson as a fictionalized version of presenter Chris Hansen, the host of the reality television series To Catch a Predator.

In the series, which aired from 2004 to 2008, Hansen worked with an advocacy group that targeted men who solicited sex from minors in online chatrooms. The movie itself is not a biopic or origin story of the show, and is instead based on the Esquire article, "Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die," which details the controversial sting operation that resulted in the suicide of an elected official.

Gisondo plays Dan Plum, a young, aspiring actor who auditions for the show, not realizing he'd be playing the decoy that lures these predatory men to their inevitable arrest. While Pattinson has been (rightfully) lauded for his performance, it's Gisondo's character who is the true heart of the film. Dan's innocence, naiveté, and big Hollywood dreams contrast with Hansen's ruthless quest for both justice and TV ratings. It's a bit of a turn from roving reporter Jimmy Olsen, who made his DCU debut in James Gunn's Superman. In The People v. Gorilla Grodd, Jimmy covers the case of a potentially wrongfully accused Grodd via true crime podcast.

George Lucas says he went back and edited the original Star Wars trilogy (with minor tweaks to the prequels) because they simply "weren't finished."

"Most movies aren't finished; they're simply yanked out of your hands and put in the theaters," Lucas said via IGN. "So you're always saying 'oh, I wish I could have just finished that one piece of thing.' But it's not that way. You have a deadline; you've got to make the deadline."

"But then I went back, after Star Wars, and redid all the movies, in terms of finishing them," the filmmaker continued. "So that they're actually finished. And of course, a lot of people got upset about that, because they said, 'you're not allowed to do that.' I said, 'Fans are doing that. They're making alternate versions and all kinds of stuff.'"

As a fan, the two changes from Star Wars: A New Hope that frequently keep me up at night are 'Han shot first' and 'Maclunkey!' In the original 1977 cut, Greedo threatens to kill Han Solo, and Han promptly shoots him in response, his gun having already been drawn and ready underneath the table. In the 1997 Special Edition, Lucas added a scene that shows Greedo firing first at Han, making the subsequent murder a justified one. Did we need this? Nope. Not everyone in the Star Wars universe who isn't a Sith needs to be a good guy (and Andor does a great job at showcasing this).

However, this scene was further edited in 2012, though it didn't hit Disney Plus until 2019, to include Greedo yelling out something nonsensical before being shot and killed. That nonsensical phrase has been roughly translated as "Maclunkey!" and was pulled from the film's archive of unused audio. Lucas has never outwardly explained the reason behind the addition, save for specifying that the phrase is "Huttese."

Godzilla Minus Zero is breaking new ground for the kaiju franchise. The film, a sequel to smash hit Godzilla Minus One, is the first ever Godzilla movie ever to earn an R-rating.

Per Film Ratings, the movie is "rated R for some violent content/bloody images." That might not come as a huge surprise, considering the film will no doubt see Godzilla rampaging through the civilian population. Still, it does mean we're probably in for some pretty gnarly visuals from writer/director Takashi Yamazaki, who also handles the film's VFX.

The latest trailer for the film revealed a second kaiju is in the mix: King Ghidorah. How that plays out remains to be seen, but expect carnage – especially as the trailer also seems to be teasing gravity-defying action.

The new film is set two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One and sees the return of the Shikishima family, with Ryunosuke Kamiki back as Koichi and Minami Hamabe back as Noriko. Their story was widely praised in the first film, so here's hoping they make it through the sequel.

"In this new film, an even deeper despair will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family," Yamazaki said at CinemaCon (via The Hollywood Reporter). "When faced with an overwhelming and inescapable force, how do people fight back? The journey from Minus to Zero will not be an easy one."

Godzilla Minus Zero arrives on November 6 in the US, UK, and Ireland, and November 3 in Japan. While you wait, check out our guide to all the most exciting upcoming movies.

Resident Evil is already available to pre-order on Blu-ray, which are words I love to type as a horror movie fan. It's still in movie theatres the world over, and I've not even had the chance to drag my frightened fiancé to see it. But physical copies are now available, should you want to avoid the horrors of a loud and phone-lit theatre screening.

Starting from $36.99 at Amazon, you can secure your copy of the 4K release, a standard Blu-ray, or even a DVD copy. Amazon US and UK have all three versions available, though I'd recommend sticking with the 4K release if you've got a PS5 or compatible player around. While its extras have yet to be confirmed, it includes a digital copy of the film, and the Walmart listing reveals a swanky limited edition steelbook, which is sure to look the part amongst any horror movie collection.

As a warning, this itchy tasty release has yet to receive an official release date or have its final look confirmed. While the live Walmart listing shows off Bryan running through the snowy and bloody streets of Raccoon City, the Amazon listing is different, so just be prepared for any changes going forward and availability of the steelbook to differ from retailer to retailer. As 4K Blu-ray releases have a tendency to sell out, I personally pre-ordered it regardless, and I've included the best places for you to do the same for both the 4K and standard Blu-ray copy down below.

Zach Cregger's new Resident Evil movie is the latest project to come under fire for allegedly using AI in its early stages of development. However, storyboard artist Simeon Wilkins has come forward to set the record straight.

"A small sampling of the storyboard work I did with Zach for Resident Evil. Not an ounce of AI here- all hand-drawn!," said Wilkins on Twitter, sharing a snippet of early drawings for the new video game movie. Check out the post below.

Rumors started to swirl after a bunch of Resident Evil storyboards made their way online, and some moviegoers, not familiar with storyboard art style, suspected AI was used.

Cregger's Resident Evil has proven to be a great hit with fans, scoring an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning $100 million internationally over opening weekend. In our Resident Evil review, we call the new horror movie "Frightening, funny and exceedingly bloody," and "an easy frontrunner for the best video game movie to date."

The film stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier who is asked to deliver a package to Raccoon City General Hospital. However, when he sets off on his last job of the night, he unknowingly walks into an all-out zombie apocalypse. The film doesn't adapt a particular Resident Evil game, but is set at the same time as Resident Evil 2.

However, the AI scandal isn't the first time fans have questioned Cregger's take. Upon learning that the film would follow a new protagonist, many fans were angry that Resident Evil frontrunner Leon has been cut out. But Cregger has proven time and time again that he is an avid gamer and lover of the games, and has taken inspiration from the whole franchise.

If you ask us, making a video game movie that adds to the lore rather than simply replicates it is way more exciting. The proof is in the pudding. Just see where the new movie places in our ranking of the best Resident Evil movies.

Retcons are part and parcel of comic book movies, with plot changes echoing back (and often improving) past entries.

One such instance appears to be arriving in VisionQuest, the upcoming Marvel show that charts the next mind-bending chapter in the life of Paul Bettany's android.

A major moment in Vision's then-short life arrived in Avengers: Age of Ultron. There, he seemingly chose to wipe evil AI Ultron (James Spader) from existence.

According to VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas, however, that wasn't exactly the case.

"He actually backed [Ultron] up in that movie," Matalas told Empire (H/T The Direct). "He always felt that he didn't really want to kill Ultron. Ultron was such a threat to humanity, and he was so lost, but at the last moment, we'll find out that Vision showed mercy."

While VisionQuest continues the story of 'White' Vision, the replacement android bestowed with the original Vision's memories, it will both serve as a sequel to WandaVision and stand alone as its own story as Vision seeks for answers amid a cast filled with past Marvel AI (including E.D.I.T.H.), surprise family revelations, and the return of Ultron.

"It’s more the Vision story, just because we’re going to dig into so much of who he is in ways that the films and WandaVision couldn’t, including some deeper parts of his origin that may go back even further than what we believed," Matalas told SFX. "So it's very much its own entity, but it does obviously touch upon what has come before for this guy."

VisionQuest is released on Disney Plus from October 14.

Brad Bird, the director of The Incredibles and Ratatouille, has a new animated movie coming to Netflix, and the first trailer looks fantastic. Titled Ray Gunn (not to be confused with the infamous breakdancer), the film follows one of the last human detectives in a futuristic world where aliens and humans live alongside each other.

Raymond Gunn (voiced by Sam Rockwell) is recruited to find out whether singer Venus Nova (Scarlett Johansson) is responsible for murder. As we can see in the trailer, it's not a simple case for Gunn as he falls into Nova's orbit and sparks fly. He's helped along the way by his alien co-worker Eyera (Tom Waits), as they try to navigate being the "only honest players in a crooked game".

There's elements of Star Wars and Blade Runner in there through the beautifully realized sci-fi city as well as callbacks to classic detective movies. The result looks like a fun adventure from one of the most visionary directors working in animation today. Count us in.

"It was always meant to be a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the '40s," Bird told Netflix's Tudum. "The elevator pitch I came up with is The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers."

The Iron Giant director also explained how he hopes the film widens the audience for animation with the movie: "There's a big chunk of people who don't watch animation," Bird continued. "That's a group I'm anxious to persuade because it's an amazing art form that is way too limited in people's minds."

Lord of the Rings prequel movie The Hunt for Gollum is currently filming in New Zealand, and to celebrate Hobbit Day (which was yesterday, but we'll give them a pass), Warner Bros has revealed a batch of first-look images, including a glimpse at the return of Elijah Wood's Frodo.

The pics, posted to TikTok, show off the Hunt for Gollum's bucolic Shire, which is of course home to Frodo and the Hobbits. Many fresh-faced Hobbits are pictured, as is Andy Serkis working behind the scenes. Most exciting of all, there's also a fresh look at Frodo, about to open Bag End's unmistakable front door. Though we can only see Frodo from behind, so we don't know for sure that it's Frodo actor Elijah Wood who is pictured just yet.

It all looks rather lovely, and coupled with the use of Howard Shore's score, it's tickling the nostalgia sensors in our brains. Recently, we also got a first look at Ian McKellen's return as Gandalf, though that wasn't a special reveal, but a message from the man himself to musician Troye Sivan, who asked McKellen to help narrate his new music video for the song "Party."

The Hunt for Gollum is set before the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and will see Jamie Dornan step in for Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in pursuit of Gollum. Alongside Wood, Serkis and McKellen, who return as Frodo, Gollum and Gandalf respectively, Lee Pace's elf King Thranduil is also set to return from the Hobbit trilogy. New additions to the cast include Anya Taylor-Joy as Seren, Leo Woodall as Halvard and Kate Winslet as Marigol.

Filming kicked off in July and was marked with a behind-the-scenes teaser that concealed a "precious" message. While we wait to return to Middle-Earth on the big screen, we've got The Rings of Power season 3 to tide us over, which hits Prime Video in November.

Comics legend Grant Morrison is no stranger to giving outspoken opinions on superhero projects, but their latest observation on DCU box office flop Supergirl may raise a few eyebrows.

Writing on their Substack, Morrison delivered their verdict on Supergirl, the Milly Alcock-starring cosmic adventure which only garnered $125 million at the worldwide box office and was met with lukewarm critical and audience reception.

"I watched Supergirl, which wasn’t terrible but wasn't especially great either," Morrison wrote. "All the best and most moving scenes involved Milly Alcock, and I thought she did a credible job. Jason Momoa, who I was actually looking forward to, was very disappointing as Lobo."

Instead of leaving Lobo be, Morrison went full throttle on the bike-riding mercenary – as well as pointing out a plot hole that makes much of the movie's second act crumble upon a rewatch.

"It was, in fact, one of the worst performances I've ever seen in a film and quite baffling, as I know Momoa's not usually that bad and Lobo seems like a character made for him to play. Go figure."

Morrison continued, "Then the whole plot fell apart in Act 2 - all Supergirl had to do was bring Krypto with her to that yellow sun world, and the sun's rays would have made the dog invulnerable again, easily able to shake off any toxin. They needn't have bothered chasing after the dull and low level Romanian gangster baddie, Krem of the Yellow Hills, to get the antidote after all!"

The DCU has shaken off the bad taste of Supergirl pretty quickly, however.

HBO series Lanterns is hurtling towards its season finale in impressive fashion, while body horror Clayface may yet prove to be a surprise success in cinemas this October.

Next year, DCU has its biggest chapter yet with Man of Tomorrow, a Superman sequel that brings back David Corenswet's hero, Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor, and a clutch of other iconic DC heroes – including Supergirl and John Stewart.

Self-proclaimed gamer Zach Cregger has not only managed to produce one of the best video game movies of all time with his new Resident Evil movie, but he has also had the chance to share his love for games in the process. The director was recently put on the spot and asked to do what all gamers fear most: list his top games of all time.

When asked to list his top four games in an interview with Regal Movies, Cregger said, "Off the top of my head: Binding of Issac, Dark Souls 3, I would say Resident Evil 4, and, God, my last one? This is brutal. The Last of Us 2." It's an impossible task, but the horror helmer sure does have great taste. Here are Cregger's top four games:

• Resident Evil 4
• The Last of Us Part II

It is not surprising that Resident Evil 4 made it on the list, as Cregger has said that his new adaptation draws a lot of inspiration from the fourth game. All of the games on Cregger's list are well loved, but what is interesting is that all but The Last of Us Part II have yet to be adapted into movies or TV shows. Might a Dark Souls movie be in Cregger's future? We will have to wait and see.

When asked if he gave Resident Evil star Austin Abrams any gaming homework, Cregger said he told the actor to play Resident Evil 2, 4, and 7. We already knew that the movie is set parallel to Resident Evil 2. The movie even includes a Resident Evil 4 Easter egg. Plus, during a Resident Evil Reddit AMA, Cregger said he used the "character elements" from the seventh game in the film.

Despite Cregger proving his gamer status time and time again, some fans are still a little salty about the new movie not adapting any specific game and choosing to introduce a new protagonist, leaving Resident Evil frontrunner Leon out. The movie follows Abram's medical courier named Bryan, who must deliver a package to Raccoon City General Hospital right at the end of his shift. But unbeknownst to him, a zombie apocalypse has just broken out.

However, Cregger pulled details from the whole franchise. "The visual language is taken from the games," added Cregger. "This movie lives in the third-person, kind of over-the-shoulder shot for most of its runtime, and it jumps to first person a lot. I feel like I have yet to see a movie that really leans into the video game visual vocabulary, the way this movie has."

Mahershala Ali has spoken out about his Marvel Blade movie that never happened.

The actor was announced as Blade way back in 2019, but the movie never managed to make it into production, and it has now been scrapped entirely.

"Should have been six or seven," Ali said on GQ's One More Question podcast, when the interviewer listed the films he'd made since Green Book. "Blade didn't happen, which I felt like definitely impacted how things unfold in your trajectory."

When asked if he was saving time for Blade, Ali clarified: "I wasn't saving. Once it was happening, I was working on it. I was doing what I needed to do to prepare myself. It just didn't happen."

As for why it didn't happen, Ali candidly gave his thoughts. "That's a Kevin Feige question," he said. "They had, as you said, a two-time Oscar winning actor under contract, and you got billions of dollars. That's a question for them, why it didn't happen. I don't mean anything personal to you, but I don't know why it did. To this day, I don't know why it didn't happen. I just know that Kevin said it was the biggest failure of his career, and I agree."

When the interviewer quoted Feige saying he felt like "a gigantic loser and failure," Ali replied: "I agree with him. 100%, 100%. He should feel that way."

By the sounds of things, Ali worked very hard on the role, too. "I spent a year training. I trained so hard until I blew my knee out," he shared. "I was waiting for them to – 'Oh, pushing it back. Pushing it back.' I'm still training. I'm training, I'm learning sword work. I'm learning, like, name a martial art, I'm training in it. I literally uprooted my family, moved to Atlanta. We're there waiting to go, and they just keep pushing it back, pushing it back, pushing it, and it doesn't happen. Then it's a strike [the WGA writers' strike], and then, you know."

Ali also wasn't a fan of announcing the film so early. "I went to them in 2019. That was my first meeting," he said. "We're at Comic-Con by 2019, in the summer. I didn't want to make no announcements. I don't believe in the announcements. Just do the work, and then it's like, okay, you announce the work is done, right? But all this anticipatory stuff is not – I'm not a fan of that at all. But they want to do all that. We did all that, and had a story greenlit, and then we don't have any deliverables. And I can't deliver until they deliver, right?

"So, that's not a secret. Otherwise, we'd have a movie," he added. "And then I'm saying no to things in that time because they own my schedule, basically."

Next up for Marvel is Avengers: Endgame Encore, and footage has already hit the internet of the bonus scenes linking to Avengers: Doomsday.

Although we are yet to see Clayface's full gloopy transformation in any of the trailers so far, star Tom Rhys Harries and director James Watkins promise that fans will witness the villain's final form in the DCU's first all-out horror movie.

"It’s fucking sick!" teased Harries in an interview with Empire, although he couldn't reveal any details. Director Watkins, best known for Eden Lake and his Speak No Evil remake, added, "When we were at San Diego Comic-Con, people were like, 'I hope you don’t go soft.' And I'm like, 'Trust me, we don't go soft.' But at the same time, there is that line. It’s a ride. It's fun. It's not torture. It's a rollercoaster."

Watkins listed his body-horror influences from David Cronenberg's The Fly to the more recent horror hit The Substance, and we can see the parallels. So far, teasers have shown snippets of Hollywood star Matt Hagen experiencing some rather strange bodily changes, such as his face melting. This is due to undergoing an experimental medical trial after being disfigured by a crime lord. Earlier this week, a Clayface TV spot showed Hagen's eyeballs popping out of his head at a movie premiere.

However, fans will have to wait until Clayface hits the big screen to see the transformation. Earlier this year, Watkins confirmed that there won't be any sighting of Clayface's final form in any marketing materials, adding, "you don't want to show the shark." But thanks to shows like Creature and Comanos and Batman: The Animated Series, we already have an idea of what Clayface's gloopy final form may entail.

Although Harries had to keep his complete transformation under wraps, he was allowed to share his melting face – the same one we saw in the trailer – with those closest to him. "I’d have family members or friends of mine who, after time, normalise the fact that they’re talking to me but half my face is disintegrating,” he recalls, “and then they would introduce me to somebody on FaceTime. That was funny!”

Avengers: Endgame Encore releases this week, and it seems like all the new footage has already leaked. The film is already out in Korea, where early audiences have been treated to new post-credits scenes and details that directly set up Avengers: Doomsday.

Now, before we get into what happens, take this as your spoiler warning. If you don't want to know what the extra footage is, come back after you've seen the movie.

It seems the extra footage is split into two sections: in-film additions and post-credits scenes. According to one social media user, there's an extra moment at the end of the movie between Peggy and Steve Rogers. While in the original movie we see them dancing together, this now features Loki knocking on their door.

Peggy opens it and asks him, "Can I help you?" as Steve hides around the corner. Loki then emerges and says, "No, but I can help you, both of you." This is TVA-era Loki, but it's not clear exactly when this takes place.

Then the post-credits start. The first features Bruce Banner and is set after the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He's imprisoned in a military complex two miles under the Earth. "The Hulk is not getting out of here, and no one else is getting in," he says, but he doesn't realize how wrong he is. His camera then crashes to the ground, as we hear Doctor Doom's voice saying, "Mr Banner, I'm here to collect you." So the Hulk will be in Avengers: Doomsday after all!

There's also a new TVA scene, which opens with Miss Minutes speaking about the agency. This is our best setup yet for how Doomsday begins. This is seemingly taking place after the events of Loki season 2, as there's a picture of Loki on the wall and we see the timelines organized like a tree, which is how Loki as the God of Stories is holding them together.

The scene then features Mobius and Ouroboros in the TVA as they start spotting incursions on the monitor. It's Earth-10005 (aka the Fox X-Men universe) and Earth-1127 (a world we've yet to see in live action) that look like they're about to collide before it's revealed that 3,000 universes have incursions.

The final tease comes right at the end of the movie. Tony Stark is forging his Iron Man mask in the original Iron Man movie, before he starts making a Doctor Doom mask. The film ends on Doom's face. Could this be implying Doom is a Tony variant?

Netflix has revealed a sneak peek at Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 ahead of the season's October release.

The brief clip, which can be viewed above, sees our new crop of heroes, including the much older Weak Kingsley (excitingly voiced in the English dub by none other than Clancy Brown), as they find themselves surrounded by foes in the middle of what appears to be a job gone wrong.

Per the official tagline, the second season "presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077... a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?" Rumors of a third season abound, but CD Projekt Red has yet to confirm.

The previous trailer introduced us to some of the other new characters, including D (voiced by Koki Uchiyama and Nazeeh Tarsha), who is out for revenge, and a new protagonist named Roman Carrax (voiced by Momoka Terasawa and Valeria Rodriguez), an aspiring filmmaker who sets out to document real stories in Night City. I wouldn't get attached to these new characters for long, however, if you remember what happened to all of our favorites by the end of season 1... It's ruthless out there.

Zach Cregger says the 2019 Oscar-nominated war movie 1917 was an unlikely inspiration for his take on Resident Evil.

"1917. But like it's completely different in tone. But that is structurally maybe the closest," Cregger told Rotten Tomatoes, when asked if any movies specifically inspired Resident Evil. "It's like if Evil Dead 2 and 1917 were its parents, but that doesn't feel right... like if those movies loved each other very much."

Written and directed by Sam Mendes, 1917 follows two British soldiers in World War I who set off on a mission to deliver an important message that will call off a fatal attack. The film earned ncluding ten nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, ultimately taking home Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects.

Though Evil Dead 2 might make a bit more sense, 1917 does make sense as structural inspiration for Resident Evil. It's a man on a mission who moves through impossible circumstances with one goal in mind – and the concept of survival gets put on the back burner.

The new movie tells a new story within the world of Resident Evil, following a slightly miserable medical courier who agrees to take a mysterious package all the way over to Raccoon City... where, unbeknownst to him, a lab-created virus has just begun to destroy humanity. Cregger directs from a screenplay he penned wth Shay Hatten. It's also some of the most fun I've had in a theater in a really long time.

One Star Wars fan might have figured out a way the Emperor's return in The Rise of Skywalker actually makes total sense with Return of the Jedi – though, not everyone seems convinced.

"Do you think Palpatine was on the Death Star ready to 'die' since he was sure he could be brought back on Exegol? He wanted Luke to kill him and turn to the dark side?" they question on Reddit.

"Ok so, do you think Palpatine wasn't really worried about dying? Because he had clones on Exegol. Means when he's wanted Luke to kill him, he means it? Even if Vader didn't stop Luke, Palpatine makes no effort to move or dodge. Making me think he really did want to turn Luke to the dark. It also puts Vader's action in a new light. Instead of protecting Palaptine, he's saving his son from falling to the dark…"

In The Rise of Skywalker, it's revealed that Palpatine had a backup plan in the case of his death, involving returning in a clone of himself. So, it would make total sense for him to be okay with the idea of dying in Return of the Jedi.

However, other fans aren't really convinced. "No, I think they didn't think this through when they brought him back. Whether it's Canon or Legends," says one. "That scream he lets out when he falls to his death doesn't sound like the scream of someone where everything goes as planned."

"No. He wanted a new apprentice and was working to turn Luke to the dark side to replace Vader," says someone else.

"I don't believe he thought he was going to die. I think Luke's line to him is the reality here. 'Your overconfidence is your weakness,'" says another person. "Palpatine thought he had already won, that Luke was going to turn, he could finally replace Vader, and the Rebellion was going to be crushed. In his mind, his victory was a foregone conclusion. Sure, he had his backup plans like Exegol, but I think he was just being a cocky bastard here."

"No. He just wanted to pit father against son and take the victor as his apprentice," agrees another fan.

I think it's safe to say that the community is keen to play a D&D-style Lord of the Rings RPG, because a crowdfunding campaign for one is approaching $2.1million in pledges with the speed of an airborne Nazgûl.

Developed by Free League, The One Ring is a tabletop roleplaying game like D&D set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This crowdfunding campaign provides a beginner-friendly update to a system that's been earning industry acclaim since it launched in 2022, but the overhaul also provides a full bestiary for the first time alongside a campaign expansion that takes us to Gondor and Rohan. This Lord of the Rings RPG revamp was aiming for $50K in crowdfunding, but hit $500,000 in around an hour. As I write this, the Backerit page is now sitting pretty at $2,089,055. I suspect it'll have jumped up again by the time you read this.

Thanks to this level of support, the crowdfunding campaign has already blown past all of its stretch goals (including cardboard standees for use on battlemaps, extra monsters, and previously unseen locations) so had to make new ones. These will either be added into the relevant books or, in the case of separate items like special dice, provided as rewards with certain pledge levels.

It isn't just The One Ring that's being given a new lick of paint, however. The system has already been adapted for D&D under a different name (The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying), and this ruleset is also getting the same three books… albeit with tweaked names as well as unique covers. They'll include the stretch goals mentioned above.

Here's what's featured within the campaign:

• Core Rules: No matter whether it's for The One Ring or its D&D equivalent, the new Core Rules provide re-ordered, clarified, and refined mechanics to make learning or reference easier. That includes tweaked combat and character creation, alongside a solo game mode – Strider Mode. This had been released previously, but was digital-only.
• Bestiary: The One Ring is finally getting a bestiary. Called "Creatures Strange and Foul" (or "Of Orcs and Evil Things" for the D&D version), this tome brings together all sorts of foes the party can cross swords with. While orcs and trolls obviously feature, you're also getting rules for the Nine Ringwraiths, Oliphaunts, dark powers like the Balrog, and more. Not all of the entries are villainous, of course; beings like Ents also feature here.
• Gondor/Rohan campaign guide: The game has largely focused on northern realms until now, so this is the first time we're getting rules to explore the southern kingdoms of Men. Besides offering detailed breakdowns of Gondor and Rohan, it's full of adventure hooks to hang new quests on. It's called "The White Tower and the Hall of Gold" for The One Ring, or "Realms of the South" for D&D.

Considering how far over the goal this campaign is, I think we can assume fans are excited about it. Frankly, I don't blame them. The One Ring has been one of my favorite roleplaying games for a long time, and it's got pride of place on our list of the best tabletop RPGs. Part of that is down to its accessible yet cinematic rules, yes, but the thing that really appeals to me as a Lord of the Rings nerd is how true to Tolkien it feels.

The novels have a specific vibe that's hard to replicate without getting carried away and veering into swords 'n' sorcery, but The One Ring manages to thread that needle. It's not just about emulating how Middle-earth should look (judging by Tolkien's writing, Dark Ages chic) or sticking to the rules of its world; it's about capturing the story's theme and heart. As an example, it turns the feeling of fellowship and encroaching shadow into key mechanics.

There's no release date for these three books yet, but the hardcover versions are estimated to ship in October 2027. You'll also receive PDF versions of them with most Backerit tier levels, though there's no date for delivery on those. If it's anything like other tabletop RPG campaigns or releases, it could well be sooner.

George Lucas has talked about his decision to retire to work on his recently opened museum.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art has freshly opened its doors in California, showcasing a seriously impressive collection that, naturally, includes plenty of Star Wars memorabilia.

As Lucas has explained in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, though, when he made the decision to step away from moviemaking to concentrate on the museum, he still had a lot on his plate.

"Well, I'm 82, so there is a limit," he shared. "When I did this, I decided to retire from making movies, which was a big deal because I had three more Star Wars to make. But, I realized that I was running out of time, and I did want to make this museum. And I'd spent a lot of time developing digital technology for the movie business. You know, all art depends on technology."

Lucas had plans for a sequel trilogy of his own that would have involved Darth Maul as a crime syndicate boss. But, he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, and Disney's sequel trilogy – 2015's The Force Awakens, 2017's The Last Jedi, and 2019's The Rise of Skywalker – went down a different path.

Next up for Star Wars is Ahsoka season 2, which arrives on Disney Plus on January 20. "It was so surprising when George [Lucas] created these archetype god characters," Dave Filoni said recently of the Mortis gods, which will be part of season 2. "What were we examining there in Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? A lot of it is about power, and what you do with power, and how you wield power. For a Jedi, I think it's a natural story path to get into these questions."

Monster Hunter series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto says there's still an appetite at Capcom to make another live-action movie after 2020's Paul W.S. Anderson-directed box office bomb.

"Speaking as producer and also as overall series producer in the past, I'm definitely interested in the idea of revisiting a Monster Hunter movie if the stars align in future," Tsujimoto told Postmode.

But, of course, we need to talk about the Gammoth in the room: 2020's Monster Hunter, to put it mildly, was not a success.

Yes, its low box office (under $50 million) can be partly attributed to a cinematic landscape emerging from the after-effects of COVID-mandated shutdowns, but a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes and scathing reappraisals in the years since has done nothing to help Monster Hunter's cause. Hot off the heels of Zach Cregger's Resident Evil – an adaptation of another beloved Capcom property – it only holds up worse.

Still, that hasn't deterred Tsujimoto, nor the wider Capcom shot-callers.

"Capcom as a whole, not just Monster Hunter, has said publicly that it's putting real effort into film and visual media," Tsujimoto underlined. "Within that, we're of course very interested in Monster Hunter on screen and want to do it in the future. But it's not something we can do on our own."

There, then, is the rub. Much like Monster Hunter's beastie-thwacking gameplay, it requires a team effort to get the job done. To that end, Tsujimoto seemingly requires a certain set of conditions to be met before trying again.

"It depends on the companies involved, on a director, on timing," Tsujimoto said. "And we'd need to think hard about what we want to depict. The desire is there, but it happens when the timing and those things line up. We want to do it in the future."

Elsewhere, Monster Hunter Wilds is receiving a new expansion, titled Ascendance. It promises new gear, new locations and – of course – new monsters to hunt. It's set for release on PC, Xbox Series X, and PS5 next year.

Six years after the series came to an end, Agents of SHIELD star Chloe Bennett is still annoyed that the show isn't considered canon in the MCU.

"I'm still low-key angry that they don't fully acknowledge this as canon – the real followers will understand that," said Bennet in an interview with Elle. "We were the first MCU TV show, and we did 130-something hour-long episodes. We spent a lot of time in people’s homes, and I spent a lot of my life playing this character and this young woman growing into her power. There’s a lot of symbolism in that, especially looking back now."

No matter how hard some Marvel fans may argue its case, Agents of SHIELD is not considered canon in the MCU. This is largely due to the show operating within its own set of rules outside of the MCU, such as time travel, and the fact it completely ignores the blip. The SHIELD timeline has also never really matched up with the MCU, making it hard to place in the MCU timeline.

Bennet was introduced to the Marvel on-screen universe in 2013 as the skilled hacker Daisy Johnson, aka Quake. In the comics, the superhero and spy has the power to create great earthquakes. In the show, we see Daisy evolve into a powerful Inhuman and core member of SHIELD, protecting the world from cosmic threats.

However, despite being irked over the whole canon debacle, Bennet is still open to returning to Marvel one day. When asked if she would even play Daisy again, Bennet said, "Totally. I’m obsessed with Daisy. I feel like I am Daisy. I would be so protective of her," adding, "I would love to play her with the growth that I’ve had since I’ve had a break from the role."

The issue is, we have never seen the main SHIELD characters in any MCU projects. But MCU characters have made cameos in the show, including Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. Fans also spotted an Agents of SHIELD Easter egg in Daredevil: Born Again. So, there is some link there. Who knows, maybe Agents of SHIELD could get a reboot in years to come and make its way over to the MCU, just like Netflix's Daredevil did.

After the first season hinted at the Mortis gods being a major part of the story, Ahsoka season 2 will indeed feature the Force beings.

"It's definitely a thing," Filoni confirmed of the gods factoring into season 2 to Empire magazine.

Ahsoka season 1 ended with Baylan Skoll standing on a statue of the Father, which was pointing into the distance. Then, the first trailer for season 2 teased Baylan seeking a great power, presumably tied to these gods.

"What we're dealing with is: are you going to believe in this, or not? And what is the danger if it's real? And how are you going to prioritise your goals here?" Filoni explained. "What would a Jedi do, versus what would a regular person do? Those things come up through the course of the season."

The trio was introduced in The Clone Wars and represents different aspects of the Force. The Daughter is the light side, the Son is the dark side, and the Father is the balance. The Father wanted Anakin Skywalker, as the Chosen One, to take his place – however, Anakin refused.

This wasn't the end of the Mortis arc, though, as Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano were put through their paces by the gods. It's a complex storyline that ends with the gods all dead: the Son kills the Daughter, and then the Father kills himself to weaken the Son enough for Anakin to kill the dark sider. Even more importantly, though, is that Ahsoka is killed by the Son, then revived by Anakin with help from the Daughter. "It's a challenge, I can tell you," Filoni shared of bringing the Mortis gods and the World Between Worlds from animation to live-action. "It was so surprising when George [Lucas] created these archetype god characters. What were we examining there in Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? A lot of it is about power, and what you do with power, and how you wield power. For a Jedi, I think it's a natural story path to get into these questions."

Ahsoka season 2 will feature the return of Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker, along with Admiral Ackbar facing off against Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Ezra Bridger back in action in the main galaxy.

Whispers of a Darth Vader movie don't seem to be going away anytime soon, but Anakin Skywalker actor Hayden Christensen is keen for us to know that, for now, there's nothing concrete in the works.

When pressed by E News on talk of a Darth Vader movie, Christensen replied, "I think those are just rumors."

He added, "I would be thrilled to get to do that. But right now, those are just rumors."

With that answer, the Force grip a prospective standalone Vader movie has on our hearts and minds has grown a little weaker, but that doesn't mean Christensen is distancing himself from all things in a galaxy far, far away – far from it, in fact.

That's because Christensen is set to reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker alongside his old protege 'Snips', AKA Ahsoka Tano, in Ahsoka season 2. The series hits Disney Plus on January 20, 2027.

On his recent experience with Lucasfilm, Christensen had nothing but praise for new co-president Dave Filoni.

"Dave Filoni, I think, understands this character in some ways even better than I do," Christensen told IMDb. "And so when I read the scripts, I'm just elated with what I get to do and say. That said, he's still very collaborative, and if I have an idea, I'll share it, and if it works, then we'll do it. And so, we're not too precious about things and we get to explore a little bit. But I try to honor the words that he's written, and I don't need to deviate much."

Alongside Ahsoka season 2, Star Wars: Starfighter – starring Ryan Gosling – is also releasing next year.

The Silent Hill movie franchise has yet to live up to the video game series' success, but that could change soon as a new string of Silent Hill films are reportedly on the way.

According to Dread Central, the Silent Hill movie franchise is getting a fresh start that will be a "bold new take on the franchise."

The first Silent Hill movie adaptation hit screens in 2006 and still holds up as a pretty solid adaptation – it even places on our list of the best video game movies. The movie, directed by Christophe Gans, follows a mother setting off to Silent Hill in search of her daughter, and brought to life some of our favourite details from the first game.

However, since then, the franchise has taken a dip, with 2012's Silent Hill: Revelation scoring a seriously low 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, and this year's Return to Silent Hill flopping at the box office. But there is so much potential there, with the Silent Hill games being regarded as some of the most atmospheric and downright scary games ever.

The game franchise kicked off in 1999 with Silent Hill, following protagonist Harry Mason as he searches for his missing daughter in a mysterious town with even stranger inhabitants. The series, which has since spanned seven more games and multiple spin-offs, tasks players with solving puzzles, battling creatures, and searching the fog-covered town for answers. The reboot comes at a perfect time, too, as the list of best Silent Hill games is growing, with the new game Silent Hill: Townfall launching on September 24.

The news comes just days after Zach Cregger's daring take on the Resident Evil hit screens, opening to $108 million worldwide, which is more than any past Resident Evil movie made on opening weekend. What is most interesting is that Cregger's take doesn't directly adapt any specific Resident Evil game, but instead tells a new story set in the Resi universe we all know and love.

Seven Resident Evil movies were released between 2002 and 2021. However, the success of Cregger's new movie suggests that video game movie fanatics are hungry for stories that build on games rather than simply adapt them. There are surely countless stories begging to be told in Silent Hill's vast, foggy domain.

Marvel Studios is apparently still investing in Disney Plus TV shows, despite the news that Daredevil: Born Again is ending with season 3. In a new report suggesting the Charlie Cox-led show was coming to a close, it was revealed there are "three to five" live-action MCU series currently being developed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources also suggest a new spy thriller is among those greenlit. Reportedly called Zodiac, it's thought it could be focused on a criminal organization from the comics led by a villain called Scorpio.

Regardless of what it's about, a new spy thriller could tread similar ground to Marvel's ill-fated Secret Invasion. As that show struggled to resonate with viewers, it's a genre the MCU needs to redeem itself in.

Marvel television will be making an appearance at New York Comic Con soon with a panel set for October 8. We could hear more about future MCU plans here or it may focus on the already announced animated projects (including X-Men '97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man) and the upcoming VisionQuest.

However, the news of more shows comes amid a question mark about whether Marvel was slowing down its production of TV shows. Wonder Man was recently canceled after its season 2 renewal and Kevin Feige had previously announced plans to streamline MCU releases in the coming years.

We'll have to wait and see what happens next for Marvel on the small screen. In the meantime, we have Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars both confirmed and on the way.

Resident Evil took the box office by storm this weekend, raking in over $100 million worldwide at the box office and setting a new benchmark for video game adaptations on the big screen. But great art takes time, and Cregger was working on the movie right up to the wire, which led to some differences between the domestic and international versions of the movie.

Speaking on The Big Picture podcast, Cregger touched on the challenge of shooting Weapons and Resident Evil back-to-back, noting that the acclaimed video game adaptation was finished "maybe" two weeks before release. That's not outside the norm for big movies with a very tight turnaround; let's not forget that Cregger has now released two movies in just over 12 months. What's a little surprising is that the movie missed the international DCP deadline, meaning territories outside America received an incomplete version of the movie.

"It was pencils down at 11:59, Saturday night because the DCP had to ship," Cregger said. "There's actually… the international version is different than the domestic version because I was still needing to make changes and like we missed our international finish line time, you know? So there are shots I'm not stoked on in the international version that like are better in the domestic. That's how down to the wire it was."

Now, we don't know exactly how the international version of the movie differs from the print being screened domestically, but the differences are most likely imperceptible to anyone but Cregger. Visual effects and color grading are two of the more common late-stage post-production processes, and given how VFX heavy Resident Evil gets for its final lab sequence in particular, it's possible a few of these shots are more to Cregger's liking in the domestic DCP.

Imperceptibly incomplete or not, Resident Evil has proved a big hit with audiences and critics (our glowing Resident Evil review is proof of that), even if the discourse around Cregger's approach to adapting the games, and the mic drop Resident Evil movie ending, has reached a fever pitch in recent days. On that ending, Cregger also recently revealed how his original vision for the final sequence changed during production.

"One of the missteps I made early on was not [showing Bryan's desperation for a cure]," Cregger said. "We reorganized the chain of events. Thank god I shot for this as a contingency plan; it was my plan B."

Four years after it was announced, Game of Thrones star Kit Harington says he can see his shelved Jon Snow sequel series moving forward despite previously being reluctant.

"I still think there’s a world in which something could work. I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t," said Harington on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "Now I’ve gone and done all these other things, and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again and where it sits in my life."

The spin-off went into development in 2022, and according to Harington, was being worked on for two years. The show was set to follow Snow living in exile behind the wall after the events of the main series, broken and living alone without his direwolf Ghost or his sword Longclaw. But in 2024, Harington confirmed that the project had been scrapped because it wasn't "exciting enough," and HBO found it too downbeat.

The star says at first he was all in, but over time, he grew more reluctant to go back to the fantasy world. "I was very insistent at the start, as was HBO and George R.R. Martin. Like, 'If we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much better if we don’t.' After a little while of thinking about it, it kind of was me. [I said], 'This isn’t quite the right [story].'"

Not all is lost, though, as earlier this year, Drops of God's Quoc Dang Tran joined the project. The story has seemingly been refreshed, with the tale now set in Essos, with Snow's sister, Arya Stark, now reportedly involved.

However, Harington is now set to join another huge fantasy franchise as the star has been cast as Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO's Harry Potter series. Harington previously voiced the character for Audible's Full Cast Audio editions of the Potter books. Harington added that the Harry Potter books helped him through a difficult time in his life tackling sobriety, adding, "Lockhart is addicted to himself… It’s just a tiny step to my left [for me]."

Man of Tomorrow star Nathan Fillion has shared a tease for the upcoming Superman sequel, and apparently it's all about Lex Luthor. The follow-up will focus on Clark Kent teaming up with Lex to face a new villain together called Brainiac.

Guy Gardner star Fillion will also appear in the upcoming DCU movie and told The Hollywood Reporter what audiences can expect: "In the first movie, and rightly so, we learn a lot about who Superman is. In [Man of Tomorrow], I think we’ll learn more about who Lex Luthor is, and I think it's equally important."

Nicholas Hoult will be back as the villain in the new DC film. We don't know too much yet about how he works into the story but the last time we saw him was in Peacemaker season 2 when he was behind bars. Somehow he'll get from that point to wearing an epic comics-accurate warsuit in Man of Tomorrow.

Fillion's comments follow on from Clark Kent star David Corenswet, who recently said the upcoming second Superman film will have a pretty different tone. "The characters are a little more mature," he told Entertainment Tonight recently. "They're going to go a little bit deeper. Not to mention all the crazy stuff. Nick Hoult in the Warsuit!"

Guardians of the Galaxy actor and Rocket Raccoon's on-set stand-in Sean Gunn said he has retired from the motion capture role.

Speaking on the Brandon Davis Show, Gunn – brother of Guardians of the Galaxy director and DC Studios boss James Gunn – points to the physical toll from playing Rocket Raccoon, which often involved crouching and kneeling down for hours on end while wearing an uncomfortable motion capture suit.

"Everyone thinks it's my knees but it's really my feet and my ankles because I'm in a catcher's crouch and I'm pivoting a lot on my points of contact and the ground… over the years, it had a little bit of effect on my physiology," Gunn said.

"My knees are fine. Since I turned 50 a couple of years ago, I think I'm retired from playing Rocket. Not that they've called but if they did, I don't think I could do the motion reference anymore for Rocket."

If this is the end for this iteration of the character, it brings to a close one of the more fully-formed CGI achievements in Marvel and movie history.

Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper, remained a key member of the Guardians of the Galaxy through to the very end of the trilogy, leading a new Guardians lineup that included Gunn's other MCU character Kraglin, Cosmo the dog, and Will Poulter's Adam.

Over in the DCU, Gunn is now portraying Weasel and G.I. Robot in animated series Creature Commandos. In live action, he has stepped into the shoes of Maxwell Lord in both Superman and Peacemaker season 2.

The Guardians are noticeably absent from the upcoming roster of superheroes that make up the Avengers: Doomsday cast.

The latest Avengers movie, set for release on December 18, sees Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom takes on some of the MCU's finest – with Avengers: Endgame's re-release on September 25 promising fresh footage from the upcoming Marvel movie.

James Gunn is standing by the decision to kill off Hal Jordan at the beginning of Lanterns. The character, played by Kyle Chandler in the HBO show, was found dead during a 2026 flash-forward at the end of episode one, appearing in 2016 flashbacks from that point onwards.

One fan took to social media to complain about this decision, calling it the "worst thing" the DCU has done so far. "Maybe you should try and at least respect the characters that made the comics popular. Killing Hal off right away after we have waited 15 years to see him on screen again was the worst thing you could have done," they wrote on Threads to the DC Studios head.

Gunn replied to the criticism, doubling down on the approach they took in the Lanterns show. "Hal's the star of TV series & he's in all the episodes so far," he wrote on Threads. "It's more live action screen time than all the live action screen time he's had combined throughout history. Kyle is amazing in the role. We more than respect him. We love him, despite his imperfections."

He went on to explain that their approach is not as simple as the fan was implying. "Us knowing the time of his death, if that's exactly what that is, is absolutely not the same thing as killing him off right away," he continued. "Hal is a big reason why the show is so popular with fans & non-fans alike; sorry if you don't like it."

It's a fair point. Hal has actually had more screen time than Superman so far, meaning that he's a huge part of the DCU. While it will likely mean he won't appear beyond Lanterns, unlike his co-star Aaron Pierre, who is reprising John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow, he is undeniably a big part of the universe on screen so far.

There is also still a question hanging over Hal's death, as Gunn hints at here when he says "if that's exactly what it is". Ever since the first episode, fans have been wondering whether Hal is actually dead or whether his body is actually a Manhunter in disguise. However, episode 6 did seemingly narrow down the potential suspects, leaving me to wonder if he is actually gone after all.

After weeks of cancellation rumors, Daredevil: Born Again season 3 will reportedly be the show's last.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel also quietly parted ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane, "whose contract was up and was not renewed." This means someone else will have to oversee the show during post-production, which is reportedly already in the final stages.

Scardapane served as showrunner for all three seasons and made a heartfelt post following the completion of season 3: "Sorry it took so long to say, but THAT'S A WRAP on production for Season 3 of Daredevil Born Again," the showrunner wrote on his Instagram story. "Thank you to Marvel and the magnificent cast and crew that made this season something very, very, very special. I'm humbled daily by the talent I get to work with. Cannot wait for you to see what all these twisted minds have come up with. #BestCrewEver"

After Wonder Man season 2 was cancelled (despite being previously renewed), fans were quick to notice that there aren't live-action Marvel shows on the release slate beyond Born Again season 3 in March 2027... making us all wonder if the age of Disney Plus MCU shows has come to an end for now. Though we do still have VisionQuest on the docket.

The third season of Born Again is supposed to give us that long-awaited MCU Defenders team-up, folding the lives of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist into one season alongside Matt Murdock's newfound journey in jail.

A new Street Fighter trailer has arrived, and it gives us an exciting look at all the special fighting moves from the video games that feature in the upcoming movie.

In the brief clip, which you can view above, we see a plethora of moves including Shoryuken, Dhalsim's aerial attack Yoga Mummy, Chun-Li's Hundred Lightning Kicks, Balrog's Buffalo Headbutt, Dragonlash Kick (from Street Fighter 7), and Hundred Hand Slaps. A previous trailer also recreated the loading screen from 1991's Street Fighter 2 and featured directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou as two of the fighters.

The live-action movie, directed by Kitato Sakurai, sees Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken (Noah Centineo) enter the World Warrior Tournament at the insistence of Chun-Li (Callina Liang), who is fixated on taking down the evil M. Bison (David Dastmalchian).

A special event is also being held at participating IMAX theaters on October 15, which allows lucky fans to view the movie one day before release at 7 pm local time. Participants also receive a special print of the film's poster and get to see seven minutes of bonus footage.

The cast includes Cody Rhodes as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Orville Peck as Vega, Andrew Schulz as Dan, and Mel Jarnson as Cammy. There is also now a popcorn bucket shaped like Guile's hair, which is brilliant or terrifying depending on how you look at it.

Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy says it was fairly easy to include that nod to the DCU's Batman in episode 6.

"There were shockingly fewer conversations than you would think," Mundy tells GamesRadar+. "It was in [the episode] right before it. John talks about some giant squid in Metropolis. And Kerry is from Gotham, which gets name-checked in episode 2. We wanted to make sure that we were name-checking the world, just because there is a greater world out there, that we wanted to say it was a real thing for our characters, and we didn't wanna make a big deal about it, in a strange way."

In Lanterns episode 6, John and Hal meet up in 2026. At the diner, Hal complains about Guy Gardner, the present-day Green Lantern, and tells John that Guy "ripped off that Bat-guy from Gotham. Put a beacon right in the middle of the fucking town here, so people can summon him."

This isn't the first mention of the DCU's Batman, as he has a brief, non-speaking animated cameo in Creature Commandos (which is canon to the DCU), but it is the first live-action mention. As of right now, a Batman hasn't been cast (though some fans are hoping it's Reacher star Alan Ritchson). Robert Pattinson's Batman exists as part of the Elseworlds universe, meaning it's a DC property but isn't part of the actual DCU.

Resident Evil is a certified critical and commercial hit, so much so that it's already out-earned the 2002 movie's entire run.

Per Variety, Zach Cregger's latest horror feature earned $60 million at the domestic box office and $48.3 million at the international box office, making for a total opening weekend of $108.3 million. The first entry in the video game movie franchise, 2002's Resident Evil, earned $26 million in its opening weekend and $102 million in its entire run.

Keep in mind, Cregger's Resident Evil had a budget of just $75 million, and has already earned it back and more in its opening weekend. It's a great time to be a horror fan.

The new movie tells a new story within the world of Resident Evil, rather than adapting a specific installment of the massively popular video games. Austin Abrams plays Bryan, a visibly exhausted, down-on-his-luck medical courier who agrees to take a mysterious green package all the way over to Raccoon City... where, unbeknownst to him, people are mutating left and right. Cregger directs from a screenplay he penned wth Shay Hatten.

The film currently has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, with our own review calling it the "best video game movie to date." Cregger is on a pretty great run given that Barbarian and Weapons each have a 92% on RT, with the latter earning some Oscar noms and winning one for Amy Madigan's portrayal of villain Aunt Gladys. It's worth noting that Cregger actually made his directorial debut in 2009 alongside late friend and collaborator Trevor Moore (who is given a sweet nod in Weapons), and if horror isn't your thing... why not check out the plucky romcom Miss March?

Amid the ongoing video game adaptation boom, one of the more surprising projects in development is an animated Bloodborne movie with YouTuber Jacksepticeye on board as producer. The Bloodborne super-fan, real name Seán McLoughlin, is a curious choice to be shepherding one of the more acclaimed games of its generation to the screen, and in a new conversation, McLoughlin has acknowledged widespread scepticism of his involvement.

Speaking on the 100 Questions with Tom Simons show, McLoughlin was asked a series of rapid-fire questions about his Bloodborne adaptation, which was announced at Cinema Con in April. The YouTuber-turned-unexpected-movie-producer recognized that his name being so closely associated with the Bloodborne movie – which still doesn't have a director, writer, or animation studio attached – has left fans puzzled.

"I would say 80% of the responses were critical of it," McLoughlin admitted. "I don't want to say negative… I would be the same if someone took my beloved IP, which is my favorite, and then some YouTuber's attached to it. It makes you scratch your head a little bit."

Since it was announced, McLoughlin has repeatedly reassured fans that he feels "all the pressure in the world" to get the movie adaptation right, noting that "gamers need it" as prayers for a 60fps remaster or sequel continue to go unanswered by FromSoftware.

"I wouldn't have let it go in a direction that I don't think is worthy of the Bloodborne IP," McLoughlin reiterated. "I am not trying to be the game. I'm not trying to one up the game, and I'm not trying to compete with it or tell the same story; I'm trying to honor the universe that's there and tell as good a story as I can within it."

Bloodborne is one of two FromSoftware games currently being adapted for the big screen, with the Alex Garland-directed Elden Ring movie now in post-production after wrapping filming in July. The Bloodborne movie is still much earlier in development, with no news yet on who will write, direct, or star. All we know is that McLoughlin is intimately involved, with the YouTuber even claiming he's the one making hiring decisions.

"On these calls, people listen to me above almost anyone else," McLoughlin claims. "I say that my role is that I'm the one being like, 'This is a good idea, this is a bad idea, we shouldn't do this.' But also I'm the one greenlighting who gets hired, and who we work with to make sure that vetting process is good. You don't want to bring on anyone who has no idea what Bloodborne is. In simpler terms, I'm sort of the vibe-checker to be like, 'Yeah, not that.'"

We've got a long wait ahead to find out whether McLoughlin was the right man for the Bloodborne movie job as the animated feature is currently undated. In the meantime, you can head to the theater right now to see Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie, which just set a new high bar for video game adaptations on the big screen.

Following his long-awaited Lanterns episode, Guy Gardner actor Nathan Fillion has admitted that he was initially concerned about appearing in the new HBO show due to how different it is from Gardner's introduction to the DCU.

"My concern was consistency," said Fillion to Variety. "I knew there was going to be a shift in tone. What I didn’t want was for there to be a shift in the character himself." Fillion added that he was surprised he was even asked to make a cameo.

Fillion made his DCU: Chapter One debut as Guy in the much lighter 2025 movie Superman. However, the star found a way for Guy to fit into the gritty True Detective-style series. "I just likened it much to, if you were to spend a weekend in Metropolis, or spend a weekend in Gotham — you’d be the same person, but you’d have very different weekends," added Fillion.

After being absent for the first five episodes, Guy finally touches down in Rushville in episode 6. But before we saw the hero in the flesh, Fillion was able to hold onto the more comedic side of his bowl-cut-having character, as the first look came from a commercial cardboard cut-out in a grocery store. "That’s part of his schtick. He wants to not just be Green Lantern, but a famous Green Lantern," said Fillion.

Guy finally shows up after spotting the distress signal from Rushville. There, he visits Aaron Pierre's jailed John Stewart and frees him. Thanks to Superman being set around 9 years after Lantern's main 2016 timeline, we already knew that Gardner would eventually become the Green Lantern. However, it is confirmed that Guy took on the mantle after Stewart turned his back on the ring for good.

However, Guy Gardner's worlds will collide even further when he has to share the big screen with another Lantern in 2027 movie Man of Tomorrow. Pierre's John Stewart is set to appear in the Superman sequel alongside David Corenswet's Superman, Milly Alcock's Supergirl, and of course, Fillion's Guy Gardner. Adria Arjona will also join in on the fun in a mystery role, but we are almost certain she is playing Wonder Woman.

Before landing on an emotional Jean Grey-centric story that helped Spider-Man: Brand New Day become the highest-grossing film of all time in the US, the movie once known as Spider-Man 4 was almost very, very different. And in a new interview, Brand New Day co-writer Chris McKenna has revealed some surprising early ideas that we hope make their way to the big screen one day.

Speaking on the Bulwark Goes to Hollywood podcast, McKenna – a writer on every Tom Holland Spider-Man film to date – explained how he and co-writer Erik Sommers struggled to find the right villains during early development on both No Way Home and Brand New Day due to the complicated shared-custody agreement between Sony and Marvel Studios for Spider-Man's extended universe of characters. This led the pair to explore some unexpected avenues during early script development.

"We were told they were never going to make a standalone Kraven movie… and we had fun ways to get into the Kraven character," McKenna said. "Kraven turning New York City into, like, a Home Alone trap for Spider-Man, where he's got booby traps everywhere, and [is] just hunting down Peter Parker. He could be either hired by someone, and maybe [you] don't even have to make him the centerpiece villain, but just someone who's stalking him the entire movie."

But, as we know, an ill-fated Kraven standalone was already in the works, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, ruling out a secondary role in a Spider-Man movie. "And then it was a joke. It was like, 'Oh no, Sony's making a standalone Kraven movie.' Like, you've got to be kidding me," McKenna said.

As for Brand New Day, the latest Spidey outing wasn't initially conceived as an introduction for Jean Grey, with McKenna and Sommers exploring other possible scenarios for Peter during early development. Among those ideas: a courtroom comedy featuring Peter's returning legal representative Matt Murdock.

"We had Peter so done with New York with his past that he goes off and sort of is a badass hero in Southeast Asia, taking down Southeast Asian gangs," McKenna explained. "He's living on a boat, like on a river, and cleaning it, fixing the engine, making his own web fluid. And then he gets a message in a video about Spider-Man back in New York, like charming fans. He's like, 'What?' There's some imposter in New York.

"So then he has to go all the way back to New York to deal with this imposter, like 'Who is this guy?' And he gets there, and he finds out this guy is using my web fluid, and he's using my suit. And it turns out the guy has done what Peter Parker had never done, where he actually had copyrighted the Spider-Man brand, like trademarked it, and had his web fluid.

“Then [Peter] had to hire Matt Murdock as a lawyer to help him fight. Because Peter Parker gets a cease-and-desist from this other guy [saying] you can't pretend that you're Spider-Man. And so it began this whole thing that was pretty fun, but it was just a different story."

While both ideas sound tremendously fun – we're particularly fond of Kraven hunting Spider-Man around New York – Sony and Marvel Studios are undoubtedly pleased with where they landed, given Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now the highest-grossing film of all time domestically after passing Star Wars: The Force Awakens' decade-long record. And, hey, there's bound to be a Spider-Man 5 to tap into those unused ideas with great potential.

Troy Baker may have voiced some of the most iconic names in pop culture – from Joker in Arkham Origins to The Last of Us' Joel Miller – but that didn't stop him getting his marching order much earlier in his career, all thanks to one difficult script cue.

"In Fullmetal Alchemist, the first incarnation of that show, I got brought in to play this character called Greed. And the first cue is 30 seconds of building maniacal laughter," Baker recalled in an interview with Party Chat.

"I found out very quickly the limits of my ability extend right up to 30 seconds of building maniacal laughter," Baker said. "And we tried for about 15 to 20 minutes on that one 'cause every time I laughed, it was awful. It was kind of like when you let air out of a balloon… it was not good."

Baker revealed he was "fired" from the project, with the role later going to voice actor Chris Patton.

"The director was like, 'Why don't you go and step out of the booth, man?' Well, I guess I could find what I can't do and I can't laugh. Which would be a lot of fun in a few years when I had to audition for another certain character that's known to laugh."

However, Baker managed to receive a do-over as Greed – in the form of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, a remake of the anime, complete with the manga's full ending intact.

While 2003's Fullmetal Alchemist was highly regarded in its own right, Brotherhood is widely considered one of the best anime of all time. As Baker explained, it probably helped his vocal chords too.

"I got to come back and my first question when we did Brotherhood was, 'Does he have to laugh?' [The director] goes, 'No maniacal laughter on this.'"

Fans of anime will be pleased to know there's plenty on the way this fall season. The new anime lineup includes The Apothecary Diaries season 3, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2, to name but a few.
