Of all the games I did not expect among everything announced at June 2026's State of Play showcase, Until Dawn 2 was perhaps furthest from my imagination. More intriguing still is the fact that it's not being handled by the original developer, but a brand new one.

Supermassive Games' 2015 cinematic epic still stands out as one of the best horror games ever made, but with a Rotten Tomato-voted movie adaptation and a similarly mixed response to Ballistic Moon's 2024 remake, I assumed the IP would accept its fate and slink back into the shadows. But Until Dawn 2 is on the way from a different British dev team – Liverpool-based Firesprite – and that one announcement trailer has given me confidence that the upcoming horror game is about to fill the boogeyman-shaped hole Supermassive left behind.

Breaking dawn

Summer Preview 2026

(Image credit: PlayStation, Xbox, Amazon, Rockstar)

Our Summer Preview 2026 special is here to spotlight the biggest games of the year with hands-on impressions, dev access, and more!

With its mysterious setting on an abandoned island, misfit ensemble of young wannabe ghost hunters, and plenty of terrified screaming for good measure, Until Dawn 2 is what campy B-movie slasher flicks are made of. It's the DNA that made Until Dawn such a thrilling joyride over a decade ago, old-school and slightly simplistic though the premise might be, and I for one find it incredibly refreshing.

Part of that is down to Supermassive's latest endeavor, Directive 8020. The developer takes a knife to its tried-and-true formula here to carve up something a little more serious: its first ever "corporate horror" game featuring a cast of actual adults. The sci-fi terror has nary a werewolf, cryptid, or serial killer in sight as it experiments with cat-and-mouse survival horror – another first for Supermassive – with a greater emphasis put on co-worker paranoia than who's crushing on who's boyfriend.

Directive 8020 sloughs off teenage viscera to reveal a fresh new face, and while it certainly kicks off the second season of the Dark Pictures Anthology with a commendable evolution, I couldn't help but miss the schlock of past terrors like The Quarry, The Devil in Me, and of course, Until Dawn.

It's just as fun to run screaming from cannibals as it is to analyze the symbolism of zombies

But I also don't want to see a developer stuck in its past when it wants to move on, which is why I'm grateful for Firesprite.

From what little we've seen of Until Dawn 2, it manages to hit all the right notes. Young people getting themselves stranded on purpose in decidedly dangerous territory. Risky revels in the dead of night. Romantic entanglements that break the cardinal rule of horror movies as laid out by Scream. Oh, and someone gets their guts spilled over their shoes in the first minute. It's cheesy, it's silly, it's everything I've been longing for since rolling credits on Directive 8020's sobering deep space terror, and it's just become my most wanted upcoming PS5 game.

I also love that it's truly leaning into the cinematic feel with the help of some familiar faces. Baldur's Gate 3 fan favorite actor Neil Newbon co-stars as one of the few discernible adults in town, something that made me audibly whoop at my TV while watching State of Play last night, and I can't wait to see how his character maybe-definitely turns out to be a bad guy (listen, after seeing him in Detroit Become Human, the guy plays bad so good).

Out of this world

Directive 8020 review: "Held back by the inconsistent implementation of series-first stealth"

He's joined in the Until Dawn 2 cast by Stranger Things' Dacre Montgomery, who you also might recognize from 2017's Power Rangers movie and the unforgettable Elvis biopic. This game only has one trailer, and it's already my favorite horror movie that doesn't exist.

That really says it all. The astonished grin that spread over my face while watching it is proof that you really can't go wrong with good, old-fashioned slasher horror. There's a unique charm about stripping back the complexities of what the genre has become – the societal commentaries of Jordan Peele, the high-brow esoteric indies of A24 – to expose the bone and muscle of the thing itself. There's a mindless purity in screechy body horror, a thoughtless glee cementing that it's just as fun to run screaming from cannibals as it is to analyze the symbolism of zombies in The Last of Us. Until Dawn 2 will ensure that I'll always have something to reach for when I'm hankering for the former – and here's to many more to come.

Want more interactive horror movie thrills?
Soon, we will finally see YouTuber Kane Parsons' popular Backrooms universe expand as the A24 horror movie hits the big screen. However, Parsons isn't forgetting how he got here, as the director promises that the feature will respect the web series' lore.

"For where I wanted to go, I have a lot of loyalties to my online fanbase and the people who have already invested in the story," said Parsons in the latest issue of SFX Magazine. "So it was non-negotiable that whatever happened had to be in strict continuity with that."

In 2022, Parsons kick-started his found footage YouTube series titled The Backrooms based on the creepypasta of the same name. Much like the original story posted on 4Chan in 2019, Parsons' series explores the concept of liminal spaces and what happens when people get lost in never-ending rooms that harbour sinister secrets.

The movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, who one day finds a door to a liminal world. But when he starts to explore the wide yellow rooms, he finds out that it's really easy to get lost in the Backrooms. However, just because the concept is heading to the big screen doesn't mean that Parsons is going to spell out what the Backrooms really are or where they came from, which those online have been trying to crack for years.

"It comes down to who is authorised to give answers. I have immense faith in audience members to piece things together contextually," he continues. "I don’t personally believe in true answers. You can describe just about anything in a way that feels like one – and people need that, they appreciate that, they look for it, and they obsess over it. "And, generally speaking, in the Backrooms there’s always been more of a focus on that obsession than on the answers themselves. Not to say there aren’t any."

Parsons is just the latest YouTuber to jump ship. In 2022, Michael Philippou and Danny Philippou seemed to kick off the trend with their movie Talk to Me, and since then, Curry Barker and Markiplier have followed suit. However, as explained by Ejiofor, working with a director who knows the source material inside out, as Parsons does with Backrooms, makes for a completely original filmmaking experience.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Ejiofor said, "I don't know if I've ever worked with somebody who's built the world that they're exploring; who gets every nook and cranny. Who's built that world in such a granular way. From the ground up. It was really exciting to know you're working with somebody who's literally the only person on the planet who knows how to tell this story. It was pretty remarkable."

Backrooms releases on May 29, 2026.
Daniel Kaluuya loves to mess with our heads, as proven during his stint in Black Mirror and his Oscar-nominated performance in Get Out. Now Deadline reports he’s got his eye on visiting trippy-sounding tale from Together director, Michael Shanks, in new project, Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel.

The project Shanks also wrote is a sci-fi thriller being handled by A24, and follows a man waking up in a hotel room that’s not your average getaway. Pretty soon, he realises that he has to break free from his prison, but the only person who can help him out is himself. Sounding like it’s residing on the same floor as Stephen King adaptation, 1408, and Buried, Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel certainly has us interested, particularly given the talent that’s already involved.

Should he sign on, Kaluuya potentially delivering a one-man show is one thing, but having it directed by Together’s helmer makes for an interesting combination. That was certainly a darkly comedic body horror, so who knows what Shanks has planned by pushing Kaluuya to his limit if he agrees to the project.

It’s another wild potential addition to the actor’s to-do list when you consider what else he has in the pipeline. Besides Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel, Kaluuya is also working on Misty Green, the Chris Rock-directed drama starring Anna Kendrick and Adam Driver. Besides that, there’s also his standalone Spider-Punk movie he’s hard at work on and his long-gestating effort to bring Barney the purple dinosaur back in an adults-only iteration.

Should you need to be scared a little sooner, check out our list of upcoming horrors to keep an eye out for, or hide behind a cushion from.

A Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake looks like it's on the cards soon – and A24 is the frontrunner to win the rights to make it, Deadline reports.

J.T. Mollner, Roy Lee, and Glen Powell would reportedly be involved behind the scenes, but the deal hasn't been closed yet. It's too early for anyone to have been cast in the project yet.

Mollner most recently penned the screenplay for Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, while Lee has produced horror flicks like Weapons, Late Night With the Devil, Barbarian, and IT. A24, meanwhile, has released genre hits including Talk To Me, the X trilogy, and Hereditary.

If the studio does win the rights to the movie, it beats out a proposed movie from The Strangers director Bryan Bertino (and directed by Longlegs helmer Oz Perkins), as well as a project from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.

The original movie was released in 1974 and directed by Tobe Hooper. The slasher follows a group of teenagers who find themselves pursued by the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface while on a road trip.

Several sequels followed, starting with 1986's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and the most recent of which was released by Netflix in 2022. The movie, which was directed by David Blue Garcia and produced by Alien: Romulus helmer Fede Alvarez, wasn't a big hit with either critics or fans and has a score of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes.

While we wait for more news on the potential Texas Chainsaw Massacre TV show, fill out your watchlist with our guide to the best upcoming horror movies still to come in 2025.

After taking Chinese theaters by storm, this year’s highest-grossing animated movie is making its way to US theatres with a brand new english language voice cast.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On studio A24 is joining forces with Chinese studio CMC Pictures to bring an English-language version of the hit animated film Ne Zha 2 to Western theaters. The movie is set to open in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on Friday, August 22.

A24 has already announced the English version’s voice cast, with Everything Everywhere All at Once and Wicked star Michelle Yeoh in the lead voice role, joined by Crystal Lee, Vincent Rodriguez III, and Aleks Le.

In a statement, Yeoh said, "I’m honored to be part of Ne Zha 2, a landmark in Chinese animation and a powerful reminder of how universal our stories can be" (HT THR). The star added, "Sharing this with audiences in English is such a joy, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience the wonder, heart, spectacular artistry, and magic of this film on the big screen."

Ne Zha 2 is the sequel to the 2019 movie Ne Zha, a modern reimagining of mythological Chinese folklore. The sequel builds on this concept, and follows "A rebellious young boy" named Ne Zha, who "is feared by the gods and born to mortal parents with wild, uncontrolled powers. Now he's faced with an ancient force intent on destroying humanity, he must grow up to become the hero the world needs," as per the official synopsis from A24.

The sequel took the box office by storm earlier this year, grossing over $1.8 billion in China alone and $2 billion worldwide. This makes Ne Zha 2 the highest-grossing animated movie of the year, beating Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which pulled in $1.7 billion globally. Ne Zha 2 currently sits at an impressive 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The original Mandarin-language version of Ne Zha 2, written and directed by Jiao Zi, did see a small theatrical release in the US and UK in March.

For more, check out our list of the best Pixar movies and all of the upcoming movies to add to your calendar.

Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding is being turned into a live-action movie at A24 – but the legendary game designer isn't keen on being too overbearing.

"I think I will help produce it – I need to kind of guide the project – but I can’t direct it myself, schedule-wise," Kojima told Variety. "I made Death Stranding as a game, so in order to turn it into a movie, it'll be something totally different.

"But it's my baby, so I would like to overlook the project," he continued. "I'm teaming up with A24 and Michael Sarnoski, so he will be writing and directing. I'll let them work on it without too much of my input, because that might get in their way. I don't want to go in and ask them to make a bunch of changes; that's not cool. I have to trust these people, and I trust A24 and Michael."

Kojima has previously teased that the movie will be unbelievable and strange, and that director Sarnoski played both Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid 1, but Kojima stopped him from playing the two sequels.

There is also a Death Stranding anime movie in the works, which recently got a confirmed writer in Aaron Guzikowski. "I love the world of Death Stranding, it's so creatively freeing, so beautifully dark and yet hopeful; I'm so excited and honored that Hideo Kojima, whose work I've long admired, has invited me to dwell within his creation, to birth new stories into this fertile, mind-bending universe," Guzikowski said. "Drawing and animation have always been near and dear to my heart, so to finally get to play in this space is a dream come true."

The Death Stranding movie doesn't yet have a release date.
From the studio that brought us Talk to Me and Hereditary comes a new horror movie I Saw the TV Glow, and judging by the first trailer, it looks just as chilling as you’d expect.

In the trailer, we see a bunch of young people rediscover a long-lost canceled TV show, where each episode introduces a new monster to defeat. It soon becomes apparent that this is more than just a show and that what is being shown on screen is bleeding into real life.

At first glance, the film looks to be a modern-day take on the 1982 movie Poltergeist, which famously follows the horrors that come out of a possessed television set. But other than the aspect of haunted technology, I Saw the TV Glow reminds us of Netflix’s Fear Street as it mixes classic horror elements with themes of sexuality, gender, and identity.

The supernatural horror flick is written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, known for the 2021 Sundance success We're All Going to the World's Fair. The official synopsis from A24 reads: "Teenager Owen is just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show — a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack."

Despite the trailer just being released, the film has already been shown at the 2024 Sundance Festival in Utah and has striped up rave reviews. I Saw the TV Glow currently stands at an impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. GQ describes the flick as "An exquisitely surreal piece that defies easy genre categorization," with ScreenRant adding, "Jane Schoenbrun’s direction is a confident and ethereal experience."

I Saw the TV Glow stars Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves’ Justice Smith, Atypical’s Brigette Lundy-Paine, Ian Foreman, Helena Howard, and Danielle Deadwyler. The movie also hosts a few guest stars from popular musicians such as Caroline Polachek, Phoebe Bridgers, and Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst.

I Saw The TV Glow hits theaters on May 3, 2024.
The new trailer for A24’s Love Lies Bleeding has dropped.

Set in the '80s, Love Lies Bleeding follows ambitious bodybuilder Jackie, played by The Mandalorian's Katy O'Brian, whose journey to Las Vegas is cut short when she meets and subsequently falls for reclusive gym manager Lou, played by Kristen Stewart. As soon as a romantic relationship forms between the two, their love is put to the test by Lou’s criminal family, forcing their budding romance down dark and violent roads.

The new trailer gives us a closer glimpse at Jackie's less-than-normal job, which proves to be way more dangerous than it's worth. Harris plays Lou's crime lord father, who Jackie ends up working for – much to Lou's dismay. "I fucking love you, you idiot," Lou tells Jackie in between shots of gunfire and explosions. The brief clip, which can be viewed above, brings us deeper into the seedy underbelly of Jackie and Lou's life in this gritty town – and we're not sure if there's going to be a happy ending...

Directed by Saint Maud’s Rose Glass, the romantic thriller also stars The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Dave Franco, and Ed Harris.

The first teaser trailer for the Glass flick was released late last year, depicting dodgy dealings, a whole lot of guns, and murder, and gave us an insight into just how Jackie ended up tangled in the family web. Then this January, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was met with rave reviews, with one critic calling it "a brutal, bloody, and discombobulating ride." As the reviews have rolled in, the flick now sits at a 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Love Lies Bleeding hits theatres on March 8 in the US and the UK on April 19.
Dwayne Johnson will be getting back in the ring as he teams up with Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie for A24 movie The Smashing Machine.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming movie is based on the real-life story of mixed martial arts fighter and two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion Mark Kerr. The project is both written and directed by Safdie who has been developing the project with Johnson since 2019.

This will be Safdie’s first solo directorial effort, as he usually works with his brother Josh Safdie. The filmmaking duo have worked with A24 before on both Robert Pattinson's Good Time and Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler and Julia Fox.

The fighter’s life has already been explored in a 2002 HBO documentary of the same name, which details the professional career of Kerr, who earned his nickname The Smashing Machine due to his no-holds-barred fighting style. The doc also touches on his personal life and addiction to painkillers.

Johnson, otherwise known by his wrestling name 'The Rock', seems like the perfect actor to take on this role as he has experience in the fighting world. He notably worked for the World Wrestling Federation (now known as the WWE) for eight years before leaving to pursue an acting career in 2004.

This is not the only fighting biopic A24 has its mitts on right now, as the studio will soon release The Iron Claw, a wrestling biopic based on the true story of the Von Erich Brothers, who made history in the competitive world of 1980s wrestling. The flick, starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Lily James, hits US theaters on December 22, 2023 and February 9, 2024 in the UK.

The Smashing Machine does not have a release date at this time.
A24 has confirmed that a Talk to Me sequel is officially in the works. The studio took to Twitter on August 8 to share the announcement, with a video that seemingly reveals the follow-up's title, too: Talk 2 Me.

According to Deadline, directors Michael and Danny Philippou will return to helm the new movie, with the latter co-writing the script with collaborator Bill Hinzman once again.

The news comes just a few weeks after the Aussie horror, whose distribution rights were picked up by the production company at Sundance Film Festival back in January, was released in cinemas. Across its opening weekend, the indie hit – made for just $4.5 million – earned $10 million at the global box office, marking the studio’s second-highest debut ever.

With that, it's hardly a shock that A24 is keen to capitalize on its success. If you've seen the film, though, it's an exciting surprise given its seemingly conclusive, twist ending.

Summoning a sequel 🤝 pic.twitter.com/LMaMBeIgFaAugust 8, 2023

Starring Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, and Miranda Otto, Talk to Me centers on Mia, a grief-stricken 17 year old who gets in over her head when she gets involved with a bunch of séance-addicted youngsters. With the help of a mysterious embalmed hand, the group take it in turns to open their bodies up to whichever spirit lurks nearby. But not every ghoulie is benevolent – or happy to go back to the afterlife once their 90-second visit is over.

"When we were writing the first film, we couldn't help but write scenes for a sequel as well," Danny previously told GamesRadar+. "Our bible on the movie is so extensive. We've got this massive mythology bible where we broke down every single spirit that the kids connected with, every single rule, every single part of the hand, and the history behind it. So I think there's so much to explore.

"I'd be so excited about the idea of doing a sequel, and there's a hundred different directions that you could take it. So yeah, oh my gosh, it would be so cool to do a sequel. I'd love that opportunity."

Talk to Me is in cinemas now.
Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are teaming up for Death of a Unicorn, a new A24 movie that has been given special permission to keep filming during the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Not much is known about the flick yet, though we do know that the pair will be playing a father and daughter who run over a unicorn on their way home. Shooting is due to kick off in Hungary very soon, with Resurrection director Alex Scharfman, who wrote the script, behind the camera.

On Tuesday, July 18, it was announced that 39 titles were excused from the rules laid out by the strikes, due to them being produced by independent studios. According to a spokesperson (via ComicBook.com), A24 is not part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and can therefore move forward with production as normal.

"It's been a complex process, many say. There's little recent precedent for a waiver template given that the last SAG strike for theatrical and TV actors was in the 80s," Deadline explained. "The guild's website promised weeks ago that when a strike was authorized, waivers would be granted, but it didn't disclose terms, how, or when."

Other movies having been given the go-ahead include Dust Bunny, Rebel Wilson's action comedy Bride Hard, faith-based TV series The Chosen, and Mother Mary, David Lowery's upcoming melodrama starring Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway.

Major movies currently on hold due to the strikes include Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch, Mission: Impossible 8, Deadpool 3, and Gladiator 2.
Ahead of Greta Gerwig's Barbie, Mattel says Daniel Kaluuya's Barney movie is the next IP adaption with a different spin.

"We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids," Mattel Films executive Kevin McKeon told the New Yorker, saying that the film has been sold to prospective partners and studios as an 'A24-type film.' “It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney – just the level of disenchantment within the generation.”

Barney & Friends premiered on PBS in 1992, featuring an anthropomorphic purple dinosaur who encourages children to share, hug, and be kind. At the end of every episode, Barney transforms back into a dinosaur plush toy (and, according to my parents, I cried every single time). David Joyner and Carey Stinson donned the purple suit while Bob West and Dean Wendt provided the voice.

Continued McKeon: "It would be so daring of us, and really underscore that we’re here to make art."

Not much is known about Kaluuya's Barney movie, though the actor did refer to it as "poignant but optimistic" back in 2020. "Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood," he added.

Kaluuya's production company 59% will produce, with the actor set to star. "Barney taught us, ‘I love you, you love me. Won’t you say you love me too?’ That’s one of the first songs I remember, and what happens when that isn’t true?” he continued. That being said, we can definitely expect a nostalgia-soaked, somewhat heart-wrenching take on the beloved purple dinosaur.

Mattel has around 45 toy-centered movies in the works, from Hot Wheels to He-Man: Masters of the Universe.

For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2023 and beyond.

The first teaser trailer for Sofia Coppola and A24's Priscilla has arrived.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed above, we see a montage of clips of Priscilla Presley (Cailee Spaney) and her life with Elvis (Jacob Elordi) – spanning all the way from their first time meeting to their wedding and birth of their child, Lisa Marie. The trailer is a quick, colorful, and hazy dream, pausing to showcase Priscilla's glamor – which is on par with Coppola's signature style.

Per the official synopsis, "When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a gentle best friend." The synopsis goes on to describe the film as a "deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame."

The upcoming drama, written and directed by Coppola, is based on the 1985 memoir 'Elvis and Me' by Priscilla Presley. Austin Butler played the rock 'n' roll icon in Baz Luhrmann's film, earning him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Olivia DeJonge played Priscilla alongside Butler. Luhrmann previously commented on Coppola's film, saying that he's "really looking forward to what part of the story is told."

Priscilla does not yet have a release date, but it's likely that it'll arrive just in time to be considered for awards season.
Beau is Afraid has proved immensely popular, giving A24 a box office high not seen since Uncut Gems.

Per Deadline, Ari Aster's film has pulled in the best per-screen average of 2023 and grossed around $320,396 in four New York and LA locations, which works out to a per-screen average of over $80,000. Uncut Gems, meanwhile, pulled in an average of $105,000 per screens (across five screens) in 2019, making Beau is Afraid A24's highest limited opening since the Adam Sandler movie.

Beau is Afraid follows Joaquin Phoenix's titular character on a bizarre odyssey home for his mother's funeral. Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, Armen Nahapetian, and Parker Posey co-star.

"It's funny. He and I, Joaquin, we really hit it off, although we have very different sensibilities. He's very intense, and I am just tense," Lane has said of filming Beau is Afraid. "But he thought I was funny, so every time we did a take he would say, 'I can't look you directly in the eyes, or I'll break up.' So just know that in every close-up and in a scene with me, he's just looking directly at my nose."

The film is Aster's third, following on from the horrors Hereditary and Midsommar. Its wide release begins this April 21.

Beau is Afraid isn't A24's only recent, huge success. Everything Everywhere All at Once recently swept the 2023 Oscars, winning golden trophies for categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor.

For everything else 2023 has in store, check out our guide to all the upcoming major movie release dates.

A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Talk to Me, the upcoming supernatural horror it picked up after it wowed critics at Sundance back in January – and it looks positively bone-chilling.

Written and directed by filmmaking brother duo Danny and Michael Philippou, who made a name for themselves via their YouTube channel RackaRacka, the movie centers on a group of teens who conduct a séance at a party. Mia (Sophia Wilde), having not long lost her mother, is particularly keen to converse with those on the other side – but the spirits they manage to contact turn out to be anything but friendly. Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Djanji, Zoe Terakes, and Lord of the Rings' Miranda Otto round out the supporting cast.

On reading the synopsis, you might be tempted to write Talk to Me off as just another genre flick but the clip, which you can watch above, looks to promise something more interesting than that. In some moments, it reminds us of Mike Flanagan's eerie works like Haunting of Hill House, as it delves deep into Mia's grief, or Ouija: Origin of Evil. In others, it gives off a more unique and dream-like vibe, à la Jordan Peele. You could do a lot worse than being compared to the works of those fright-loving filmmakers...

A24 is no stranger to releasing spookier fare, having launched the likes of Bodies Bodies Bodies, Saint Maud, The Lighthouse, Hereditary, Midsommar, Men, X, and Pearl over the last few years.

Talk to Me is set to release in US theaters on July 28.
YouTube series The Backrooms, based on an internet creepypasta, is set to become an A24 horror movie – and it'll be directed by its 17-year-old creator Kane Parsons. James Wan and Shawn Levy will produce via their respective production companies.

According to IndieWire, the movie will film during Parson's summer vacation, with a script from Roberto Patino, who also executive produces.

The original Backrooms video is a found footage style short set in 1996. An unknown cameraperson explores eerily lit empty rooms and corridors for the 9-minute runtime, as the suspense builds and builds – and something unnatural can be glimpsed. You can check out the video below (but watch with the lights on).

Parsons has expanded the mythology of his short with multiple videos posted to his YouTube channel, Kane Pixels. Each has collected millions of views.

The Backrooms began as an internet creepypasta in 2019, based on the idea of accidentally phasing out of reality into a network of empty rooms – but you're not alone, with an ominous, unnamed threat also in the labyrinth with you.

No plot details have been released about the movie just yet, but it seems safe to assume that the feature-length movie will be another found footage horror flick. How the project might evolve from there is a mystery for now, though. But, with A24 and Wan involved, we can be sure that the end product will be seriously creepy, and, with Parsons remaining at the helm, the film will surely be true to the original.

While you wait for The Backrooms movie to arrive, check out our roundup of the best horror movies ever to scare yourself silly.

A24 is looking to snap up Australian horror flick Talk to Me across Northern America, following the Australian film's buzzy premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2023. According to Variety, the studio is currently in final negotiations with Bankside Films over the US distribution rights, and has made a seven-figure offer.

"Talk To Me's #1 goal is to scare your pants off. It's one hell of a fun time, a killer concept, and it is not f***ing around when it comes to crafting a good, gory scare," writes Nightmare on Film Street's Jonathan DeHaan.

Dread Central's John Korngut was just as much of a fan, stating in his review: "Refreshingly low-concept and surprisingly scary, Talk to Me grabs a hold of you by the wrist and refuses to let go. It's nasty, mean-spirited fun from start to finish."

"There's a refreshing ruthlessness to this cautionary tale that plays like a surge of adrenaline; it makes for one hell of an introduction to Danny and Michael Philippou's brutal brand of horror," claims Bloody Disgusting's Meagan Navarro.

Check out some more reactions out of Sundance below...

TALK TO ME is a super gnarly take on the “f—k around and find out” subgenre of horror.
A24 has dropped the first look at Ari Aster’s new movie Beau Is Afraid, which will star Joaquin Phoenix. The poster shows a young boy, who seems to be a younger version of the main character, clad in pajamas.

Plot details remain light for the movie, which was previously titled Disappointment Blvd. Per Deadline, it has been described as "an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time". While unconfirmed at the moment, it seems pretty safe to assume that Phoenix will be playing said entrepreneur.

Aster also previously directed a short called Beau in 2011 about a neurotic middle-aged man who is haunted while he tries to visit his mother. However, it’s not clear whether the upcoming movie is related to this.

A post shared by A24 (@a24)

A photo posted by on

It seems it may also be a departure from the horror that the director has become known for. When it was first announced, Aster described it as a "nightmare comedy". "All I know is that it’s gonna be four hours long," he said during a talk at UC Santa Barbara back in 2020.

Alongside Phoenix, the confirmed cast for the movie includes Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, and Kylie Rogers. Beau is Afraid marks Aster’s third collaboration with A24, after Hereditary and Midsommar, and is due out in 2023.

For other upcoming movies, check out our guide to 2022 and 2023 movie release dates.
Nicolas Cage is returning to comedy once again for a new A24 film set to be produced by Midsommar and Hereditary director Ari Aster, Deadline reports. The movie, titled Dream Scenario, will be directed by Kristoffer Borgli – his directorial debut Sick of Myself premiered at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

Plot details are unknown at this point, but Borgli has also penned the script. A24 is financing and producing, with Lars Knudsen producing with Aster via their Square Peg production company, and Tyler Campellone and Jacob Jaffke also producing. Aster is no stranger to A24, with Midsommar, Hereditary, and the upcoming Joaquin Phoenix-starring Disappointment Blvd. all made with the company.

Cage's most recent film was The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which saw him play a fictionalized version of himself opposite Pedro Pascal's super fan Javi. Tiffany Haddish, Neil Patrick Harris, and Ike Barinholtz co-starred. Cage's next foray into comedy will be Renfield, which will see him play Dracula. Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, and Ben Schwartz round out the cast. Cage also stars in the western Butcher's Crossing, which will debut at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

The actor could also be returning to the National Treasure franchise soon, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. "Let's hope we're working on the script right now," he told ComicBook.com. "Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it's really good. So I think we'll get it to him shortly."

While you wait for more updates on Dream Scenario, check out our roundup of all of 2022's upcoming major movie release dates for all the year has in store for us.

A24 has released the first look at Brendan Fraser’s new movie The Whale. Fraser will play a reclusive English teacher living with a compulsive eating disorder. He attempts to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter Ellie (played by Stranger Things' Sadie Sink) for one last chance at redemption.

Darren Aronofsky directs the film, which is his first since the release of Mother! in 2017. The Whale also stars Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, Huck Milner, and Ty Simpkins.

Speaking about his transformation into the character, Fraser previously told Unilad: "It's gonna be like something you haven't seen before. That's really all I can tell you. The wardrobe and costume was extensive, seamless, cumbersome. This is certainly far removed from anything I've ever done but not to be coy… I do know it's going to make a lasting impression."

The A24 film marks Fraser's first major leading role since 2013’s Breakout, which was a direct-to-DVD action movie. However, his roster is looking pretty full over the next few years following on from a supporting part in Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move in 2021. Next, Fraser will appear in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and HBO Max’s Batgirl.

The Whale will have its world premiere as part of the 2022 Venice Film Festival. Olivia Wilde's Don’t Worry Darling will also screen at the Lido, as will Netflix's new Adam Driver movie White Noise. Other A24 movies also debuting include Joanna Hogg's The Eternal Daughter starring Tilda Swinton and Ti West's Pearl, starring Mia Goth.

For all you need to know about upcoming film releases, check out our 2022 movie release dates.

A24 has unveiled the first full trailer for horror prequel Pearl, the follow up to Ti West's slasher flick X – and it's predictably blood-soaked and bonkers.

In the promo, which you can watch above, Mia Goth's titular antagonist proves she'll stop at nothing to become a star and escape her humdrum country-living existence. Heck, she'd murder the whole town if it meant that she could see her name in lights just once.

"Trapped on her family's isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother," the official synopsis reads. "Lusting for a glamorous life like she's seen in the movies, Pearl' ambitions, temptations, and repressions all collide, in the stunning, technicolor-inspired origin story of X's iconic villain."

"If only they would just die," Pearl mumbles during a chat with some charming producer-type in the clip. "Pardon?" he replies, worried. "Nothing," she states, before the next scene shows her pushing her wheelchair-bound pops out to the edge of a dock, and dangles him in front of an alligator.

Elsewhere, she pitchforks a goose (and several people, by the looks of it), crushes an egg with her bare hands, fills her bathtub with animal corpses, blows someone up, gets intimate with a scarecrow, and auditions for a religious propaganda movie. You know, the usual...

David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro round out the supporting cast.

West and Goth wrote the movie together and secretly shot it while filming X, which takes place in the 1970s and sees Goth play both aspiring porn star Maxine and wizened antagonist Pearl. The original movie looks to be set in the same location as X, only much less run down, which means viewers already know Pearl's dream of escaping her town doesn't work out. Though that shouldn't come as a shock; in X, Pearl was so bitter over Max's youth and rising stardom, she offed all of her friends before trying to kill her.

Pearl is set to release in US theaters on September 16. While we wait, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies coming our way in 2022 and beyond.
