Zelda Wii U's release date is TBD, not 2016. Maybe start calling it Zelda NX?

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was originally a GameCube exclusive, but it ended up a Wii launch title with a slightly delayed GameCube port. Now it's looking like the same may happen with The Legend of Zelda for Wii U.

Before it was delayed in March, Zelda Wii U was planned to release in time for the holidays this year. But according to an official launch schedule published with Nintendo's most recent earnings report, it may not be done in time for the 2016 holiday season, either.

The Legend of Zelda for Wii U still has a launch date of TBD, according to the schedule, along with Shigeru Miyamoto's mecha-dueling Project Giant Robot. The only Nintendo-published Wii U games set for 2016 in North America and Europe are Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Nintendo says it won't begin discussing NX, its new "dedicated game platform," until 2016. We don't know when the system(s) will actually come out, but given how sparse Wii U's extended release calendar has become - only two Nintendo-published games confirmed for 2016, and not big-ticket items at that - I wouldn't expect Nintendo to keep us waiting too much longer. When NX finally does roll around, the ambitious open-world experience formerly known as The Legend of Zelda for Wii U would make a pretty attractive launch title.

And if you bought a Wii U specifically to play the new Zelda, well… hopefully Nintendo does a slightly delayed last-gen port for this one, too.
