360 Preview | Enchanted Arms
Broadly, there are two kinds of RPGs out there - the ones like Oblivion that offer the player a wealth of freedom, and the Final Fantasy school that concentrate on tight storytelling and addictive battling. Enchanted Arms, coming from Japan, definitely aims toward Final Fantasy's style. The game stars university student Atsuma - whose glossy hair and vacant smirk mark him as true hero material. Actually, it's the fact that he has the power to control golems - mystical entities designed to fight ...

360 Preview | Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
360 - Enemy Territory: Quake Wars - Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was one of the best multiplayer shooters we played last year on the PC. Fortunately, it looks like the console ports will live up to their PC predecessor when ETQW releases on the 360 and PS3 later this year. The game takes place prior to Quake II and pits the Strogg’s alien invasion against Earth’s Global Defense Force. Like the PC version, the multiplayer-focused shooter emphasizes team work in its ...

360 Preview | Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
What if you dropped into an online game and always knew what you were supposed to be doing? We're not talking about a causal Halo match where you just have to shoot dudes and forget 'em. We're talking about a game where you fulfil a specific role: say, a saboteur who sneaks behind enemy lines to destroy its equipment, clothed in the skin of one of its own soldiers. What if you could jump right into a game like that and understand your role? What if you could help your team achieve its goals ...

360 Preview | Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Announced in 2005, shown at E3 2006, and confirmed for the 360 in 2007, Quake Wars is still an awkward one to preview. The coders at id Software love showing off their technology but aren't so keen on going into specifics about the game, yet as the launch draws near, morsels of information are starting to emerge and once again we find ourselves looking at one of the highlights of the year's many online first-person shooters. Quake Wars favors massive Battlefield 2-style maps, but adopts a much ...

360 Preview | Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
One of the lead Quake Wars developers summed it up best as we were basking in a post-playtest glow of fading adrenaline. “I think weve found the perfect balance of chaos.” After three hours of matches on some near-complete maps, its hard to disagree. There were worried murmurs when it was revealed the games vast maps would be optimized for a scant 24 players, but this isnt a problem. Quake Wars even works with three players to a team, because like Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, ...

360 Preview | Eragon
Haven't heard of Eragon yet? Don't worry. If some in-the-know teen hasn't recited the entire book - which supplanted Harry Potter's latest atop the bestseller list - to you by this summer, the commercials for the movie will surely clue you in. Or, you can just lock yourself in a closet and miss out on a swashbuckling fantasy adventure about a teenage boy (named Eragon) who fights a corrupt king with the aid of a strong sword and a pet dragon - it's your call, really. At its heart, Eragon the ...

360 Preview | Eternal Sonata
Namco's big media day couldn't go by without another round of hands-on time with one of our favorite RPGs, Eternal Sonata. Not a lot has changed since the last time we deeply covered this adventure, but there are a few new bits of information we're happy to pass along. First, the gauge that runs down the left side of the screen, the one that slowly depletes as you attack in battle mode, can be minutely increased by continual attacks. So you've got five seconds of "action time," where you can ...

360 Preview | Eternal Sonata
Role-playing games are a dime a dozen. No, scratch that. More like a nickel for 20 run of the mill, melodramatic Japanese RPGs filled with stilted dialogue and overwrought melodrama. Seems like any and all of them are bursting with this stuff, yet no developer bothers to take these negative stereotypes away. But even with these irksome traits, we end up loving most of these games anyway, usually due to some shockingly creative aspect that overshadows the lackluster execution. In Eternal Sonata, ...
