Halo Wars

Driving the Chief up a blind alley

Placing stronger units towards the front of the pack and having long-range ones at the rear would seem to be the most sensible option in a battle, but no preset formations are allowed here. You have to try moving small groups of them individually, which is a real pain when there are countless enemies camped out nearby. While you’re struggling to assemble a particular group, any units not under direct control will succumb to bloodlust and start attacking, even if it’s a bunch of marines against a Scarab.

You can’t easily split the army and try flanking the enemy. The only real variation you can introduce into these predictable wars of attrition is to command units to launch their secondary attacks by tapping Y. It takes a while to recharge, and as soon as it’s ready you’ll want to do it again and again – because your opponent will be doing exactly the same.

When there are several players, either human or AI, you can team up with allies and co-ordinate attacks, but each player is still stifled by the same limitations that plague the solo campaign. It’s a shame because the cutscenes are of a supremely high quality and the presentation mimics Halo 3’s clean precision. Essentially, then, Halo Wars looks the part but it’s basically all show. There was a brilliantly innovative online RTS series a few years back that had the same sort of fun and depth as Halo – Bungie’s very own Myth games, now sadly forgotten. Reviving something like that would have been a lot more appropriate than the generic, inflexible Halo Wars.

Why have I never heard of this game before?
Seeing that its a Halo game youd think people would be going nuts.

The demo was pretty good for this, and I hadn't heard of this game until less than two months ago

I can hear the fanboys coming. I can already see posts like:"OMG you gave halo wars a 7 you are so biased GR" total nonesence.

If ever there was a game where ratings don't matter.

This game will sell millions, just because 'Halo' is in the title.

Course, then there will be millions of used copies available in a short time.

Tbh I didn't really see this setting the world alight. RTS' for the most part belong on the PC.

With regards to the points about lack of tactical potential i've always preferred games that offer a limited number of units at the start as they force a tactical approach. Base building invariably leads to turtling, followed by mass attacks which are often scuppered by your units being completely retarded. Bring on DoW 2 thats what I say.

OMG A 7!?!?! GR IS SO BIASED!!!!!

No, not really. I knew this would happen, and I'm a big 360/Halo fanboy.

And if you want biased nonsense, look up the KillZone 2 review Theonik. You'll find your biased remarks their.

I was expecting this actually. RTS's belong on the PC, it's their god-given home. If this were to come out on PC, I might play it, but even then, a Halo RTS just isn't very appealing to me. I was so excited when I first heard of this new Halo title. Then I found out it was an RTS and went, "Oh....well, that's cool I guess."

Oh, and I love RTS's, I'm just hooked on other things at the moment. *Cough**Cough*RockBand*Cough**Cough*

A part of me knew this wouldn't be as good as I thought it would when I saw that very first trailer which seemed like a lifetime ago. The visuals are great, the colors and animations looked goo. But as you said GR, its all looks nothing much else. I'll stick with StarCraft.

RTS games just aren't meant for consoles. The PC is the only place for that genre. But, then again, FPS games were the same way until Goldeneye.

Lame game is lame.

This is kind of ironic considering that GI gave it 9 and in the second opinion 9.25. I'm gonna go with GI on this one mostly cuz they are from Minneapolis. And I'm from Minnesota. Lol.

Holy Schnikes I called a seven. Yes, its mediocre but how have you guys not heard of this game? Do you even call yourselves gamers? Have you been under a rock for the last year?
LordSkorak  - 9 months 14 days ago
seven really?Looks like the halo series cant get rid of Bungies obsession with the number seven lol!

I am also amazed that there are "gamers" who haven't heard of this game, and I pity those who buy this game simply because the name "Halo" is in the title.

GR was the most critical of the reviews I've read so far, but I'm guessing Halo fans should stick to other shooters and RTS fans should look elsewhere. Even at its best I can't see this game competing with the majority of 2009's Q1 lineup.

so i'm a definite huge Command & Conquer fan. have been since the first on PC when it was developed by Westwood. I played the demo for halo wars and it is a total C&C ripoff. I wasnt too impressed with it. It wasnt a bad game, but definitly nothing special. Though i did like it better than the latest C&C Red Alert 3. But that one is the biggest let down of the C&C franchise.
Akiira  - 9 months 13 days ago
yea red alert 3 sucked

very few games can pull off a good rts on a console. the only good one i've ever played was civilization revolution and even it had to be dumbed down

Some games I play for fun, and some I play for the story. Halo is one of those games I play for the story. And before anyone calls me a fanboy, go ahead. I really don't give a crap.
