1 The first loop (Sonic The Hedgehog, 1991)
Simple, really. The best Sonic moment of them all, cunningly placed in the first level of the first game. Note how there's no speed-up panel before it. No spoonfeeding here – you have to work it out for yourself. Sure, you screwed it up the first few times, trying to get round it with no run-up, or pulling left as you hit the top (hint – just hold 'right'), but once you got it, there was nothing like it.
Iconic, beautiful, perfectly programmed (with gravity and inertia both working against you)… it's almost organic. And so it has to be our top Sonic moment of all time.
Above: Just hold 'right'. Odd how many people that confused
So there we have it. Ten unforgettable moments of gaming greatness. But of course it hasn't all been good - if you haven't already done so, be sure to read about the rise, fall and deafening crash of Sonic. For lighter reading, you could also catch up on yesterday's retro-reviews of nine vintage 2D Sonic games, or check out this mind-boggling official artwork.
There's more Sonic scheduled for next week too, including one extra-special story where we shed some light on one of the least-known chapters of Sonic's history - something any Sonic fan should read. See you there.
