8 Pinball (Sonic The Hedgehog, 1991)
"COPE" says the background as you're flung headlong into a set of pinball bumpers. As soon as you're out of it, you're looking for another go. And look at the 10 points rack up! Until you do it too much and they stop. Aww!
Above: This is why Sonic was cooler than Mario. How very 1990s
7 Sonic CD speed-up cog
This beautiful set-piece occurs at the start of Sonic CD. Obviously designed to show that the next-gen was here (erm… it wasn't), this section sees Sonic tilt into the screen slightly. The background scrolls as sprites slide over each other to give the impression of 3D, and then our hero is sent rocketing skywards. You have to remember, this was the year that Virtua Racing appeared in arcades. 3D was new and exciting, so this was bliss.
Above: It wasn't really 3D - just very clever use of parallax scrolling
