Mass Effect

Mass Effect - game of the year?

10 reasons this space epic will surpass all other releases

Words: Geraint Evans, GamesMaster UK

5) Sci-fine

The exceptional quality of the dialogue and voice acting, and the beautiful, cinematic soundtrack is one thing, but the fact that, while overlooking a stunning vista on an alien world, a bit of dribble actually came out of our mouths (no lies), seals the deal as far as we’re concerned. From the clean lines of space station architecture, to the way sunlight plays on rippling pools of water (even the way the menu screens look for goodness sake!) this is a visual feast worth savouring.

6) Action stations

Now this is refreshing. Despite being an RPG, Mass Effect can be played just like a third-person action game, with the same kind of squad-based dynamics and point-and-shoot action as, say, Ghost Recon. Don’t feel like being particularly strategic? Feeling lucky? Just whip out your shotgun and dispose of enemies in a more straightfoward, trigger-pumping rampage.
