GC 09: Gamescom's BIG games played

First-hand impressions of Assassin's Creed II, Forza Motorsport 3, Modern Warfare II and more

Words: GamesRadar UK

The whole point of us being at Gamescom is to play games (although our photodiary might suggest otherwise). So that's what we're doing. We're playing games so we can tell you about them. And this is where you'll be able to read our reactions, impressions and opinions of the games that are being played. We'll be updating this page as more games are sampled and experienced.

Tekken 6

Tekken 6 has been something of a slow burner. Already available to play in the arcades (if you can find one), there had to be something extra in the home console version to warrant the seemingly endless wait. And, sure enough, there is just that - the new campaign mode.

Firstly, we should make it clear that this isn't going to replace the regular action of the arcade mode.

'Proper' Tekken is still the star of the show with the usual sumptuous arenas and colourful characters, only this time with 60fps motion blur and newly-added destructible scenery. But when you need a break from the combo learning, campaign mode should be your first port of call.

The new mode sees you starting off in one location on a world map. You then enter a third-person action stage, similar in feel to the fighting sections of Yakuza, or if you want to get really retro, Streets of Rage or Final Fight.

With the new freedom of this game world, the standard control set won't cut the mustard. But rather than dumb down the fighting system, Namco-Bandai has chosen to add a free-run feature, similar to Soul Calibur. This lets you move around the area with the left analogue stick, while retaining all the moves and functionality of the arcade version's fighting via the d-pad.

If you're using the rather ace new Hori arcade stick, you can get around the problem of single stick control by holding L1 and using the stick to run around. Release L1 and you return to standard fighting.

You won't be alone in your quest, as you're often joined by NPCs who fight alongside you. You can level up these characters and customise them to the same extent you would in the regular game.

As you progress, you'll unlock more areas to fight in, until the world is criss-crossed with lines and character match-ups, with boss fights thrown into the mix every few spaces. The backgrounds vary from scene to scene and we saw both woodland and city areas, each with several enemies on screen at a time, which is impressive considering the character detail.

Of course, there has to be a trade-off somewhere and here it's in the quality of the backgrounds, which are rather bland and sparse in comparison to the normal fight arenas. The awkwardness of the characters in these basic 3D spaces is not very current-gen and it did remind us a bit of old third-person games on PS2.

Another new addition to the main game is 'Rage' mode. Here, as you get smacked around and your health bar depletes, your character will start to get angry. When Rage kicks in, your attacks will be more powerful, giving you a chance to get back into the fight in the way that Street Fighter IV's ultras can turn the tide of a match.

Of course, expert players will will be able to wear down their opponent almost to the point of Rage and then finish them with a combo before they get the power boost. When you're good enough to do that, you deserve the win.

Finally, there's the new ability to unlock special customisation items that directly affect the gameplay. For instance, a gun can not only be worn, but also fired. This extends to penguin summons (!) and missile attacks. Don't worry, though - these don't do as much damage as regular attacks. They're more for show and primarily there for you to taunt your opponent in style.

With 40 fighters, online tourneys for up to eight players, added penguins and twice the dress-up fun of the last game, this is undoubtedly the deluxe version of Tekken 6. Here's hoping the new additions prove to be masterstrokes and not just gimmicks.

its a shame about GT5 personally its the one of the 3 games I'm most looking forward to.

I hope the damage doesn't stay the way it was at the gamescom because the idea of totaling your car with just a few parts hanging off and some dents sounds unrealistic, with so many delays I'd have expected something more with the damage, ever since burnout damage has been a main part in most racing games.

I've also seen on Gamestation (UK game Store)that its due for release in about 35 days, i dont know whether to believe it as i've not seen much of it at all but Cheers for the update GR UK

aion7-

done. Im going to purchase MW2 because i like MW and it will last me a year probably whereas another £40 game may last me just 10m hours and MW2 is almsot a given that it will be good based around the original concept refined. Plus im not a cheapskate and neither are others, if you do not wish to purchase it do not. But i shall if it means they produce more outstanding games.

Also if they are gaining more money then it is a good business practise on there behalf as they know people will buy it and they will be making a larger profit - hence what every company does on this planet.

Therefore i render your comment useless and meaningless to the highest degree of those words.

Also good article it was good to catch up with some news on decent games.

Hey, aion7, I hate Activision and EA just as much as the next guy (Activision for its stupid-ass lawyers who try to say that a game they let go of is still theirs, EA for doing so many sequels that no one even wants any game from them knowingly (I didn't know that Criterion, makers of Burnout, were a part of EA)), but I know that a WHOLE FUCKING LOAD of gamers LOVED CoD4, and even more have probably fallen head over FUCKING HEELS for Modern Warfare 2, so as long as we don't tell every FUCKING PERSON that Infinity Ward is related to the company who fought in court against a game they dropped, everyone will still want all the people at Activision to be burned at the FUCKING stake while being shot at by a FUCKING FIRING SQUAD for making so many bad decisions and bad movie games for almost their entire lifetime. In fact, I also know that a lot of people have gotten the Prestige Edition because: 1, my cousins say their Gamestop (they live down near San Fran) is out of Prestige, so other high-population areas are probably also out; and 2, I FUCKING PAID THE $25 DOLLAR PRE-ORDER FEE TO RESERVE THE FUCKING PRESTIGE GAME! You can make fun of Activision all day long, and you can tell people about how good CounterStrike and L$D are until after everyone alive today has long ago rotted away to dust in their graves, but don't you dare tell everyone not to buy an upcoming game just because the studio that made it is related a horrible developer who gives an OPTION to buy more than double for lots of USABLE extras, just tell them to buy Batman: Arkham Asylum, a game that doesn't have a collector's edition, and even costs less than $40 in Canada.

Well, I'm only renting MW2. I can play through the single player and Activision doesn't get my money. I couldn't give two flying s**ts for the multiplayer.

noobeater brings good points to the argument in that pure content and successful buisiness models are both understandable price raises. I can understand that wanting more money from certain audiences seems like bull, and probably is, but events like that would hardly be made into a big deal in any other industry. Frankly, if they're gonna raise the price of some game, it probably should be the one they've put the most work and effort into. It's not like they're jacking up the price of GH...

Really Jordo141? The multiplayer is the main attraction of cod4.

Jesus. Activision are in the price rise con WITH Infinity Ward. Has anyone heard ANYONE at IW declare even the slightest symathy for the EU/UK gamers having to pay a premium for MW2? And whu not? IW could easily say they feel it's a little unfair to ask just one set of gamers for extra cash(esp in a recession where the jobless figure in the Uk has nearly doubled)and they haven't.

Being in bed with a monster like Acti has left them as devoid of feeling for their fans as Acti themselves and I don't see why people think IW are innocnt in all this.

Even if the rise was worldwide I'd think it a bit fairer but I don't see why we in the EU(who already pay way over what you guys in the US do for hardware and software and even more when Acti are involved!)HAVE to be the one giving them extra profit. Wouldn't they have made enough anyway? I thought COD4 was hugely profitable and, from now on am glad to say that I won't be buying anything they publish.

I really don't care about any company politics, evil corporations have been around (and will stay around) for years, all I care about is getting the chance to melt someone's face off via a shoulder cannon as a Predator :D
deora2dude  - 3 months 16 days ago
sigh... no word yet on a good monster jam game... COME ON FIELD! DUMP ACTIVISION AND GO WITH CODEMASTERS! please?

i think i may have shed a tear when i saw the Modern Warfare 2 footage... and my heart started to beat faster... just by watching a clip about 1:30 long...

by the way, whoever doesnt want to buy MW2, thats their choice, and i respect that... just leaves one less person for me to kill =]

also another thing to note about MW2, the kill streak customization made me almost jizz in my pants.
sklorbit  - 3 months 16 days ago
ima buy mw2 either way. i played cod4 longer than any other game ever so the next in the series easily deserves my $$$$$$$

GREmLiN324  - 3 months 16 days ago
Yeah i think that Mod. War.2, AVP,and Assasins Creed will be insanly good!!!! i dont think i could careless about a gran tourismo though, i think for racing best options are dirt 2 and and Forza 3
Ragingbull45  - 3 months 16 days ago
AC2 will be the best
Spikeabapril  - 3 months 16 days ago
Hey, i agree with aion7. I mean, MW2 will almost definitely be a good game, but i'm not buying it until either the price drops, i get it for Christmas or i buy it used. The problem isn't with the game, it's with activision. Because MW2 will do well, with a higher price, every other game will jack up their prices because they know that they can get away with it. And the more that do that, will make even more do it... so yeah, basically Boning all of us. I do want MW2, but i'll get it used, so Activision doesnt get my money. (I'm not cheap, i could afford it, it's just i'd rather not have every game i want get put up £20.)
