Five rules for introducing your girlfriend to gaming

…Without resorting to minigame collections and other such nonsense

Words: Tyler Wilde, GamesRadar US

Don’t be a backseat gamer, but don’t make a big deal about helping out when help is needed. If she wants you to take the controller, she’ll hand it to you. If an FAQ is the medication needed, don’t act like it’s blasphemy, just pull up the damn FAQ.  It’s hard to not come off like an ass when you see a solution someone else doesn’t, especially when your impossible-to-comprehend explanation is just making them frustrated. Remember that everything is clearer when you’re not the one actually playing; let her make mistakes and learn from them.

Above: “I saw some ammo on the left. Go to the left. You’re not going. Don’t you want that ammo? You’re almost out of ammo, you should go get that ammo I saw. Oh, wait, where is it? I swear I saw some ammo there. Hey, let play for a sec, I’ll find it.”

It won’t be long before you’re the one who’s stuck, and she’s pointing out the way to go. I would have been stuck on the final battle in Resident Evil 5 for an extra ten minutes had my wise companion not pointed out my error. So, to recap, don’t be a dick – you make mistakes too.

Above: “Oops, I killed you. Sorry. Now where was that ammo? OH, I think I know where it was. Go back there after you respawn. You’re not going. Are you listening?”

Now get out there and convince your non-gamer friends, girlfriends, or boyfriends (if all of this gross stereotyping is reversed in your case) to give games a chance. The perception that gamers are lonely animals is completely off – gaming is, and always has been (with a few exceptions) an excellent social experience. Overcoming a pain-in-the-ass boss fight is far more satisfying when you have someone to celebrate with.

I glanced over this article. Tyler, you are a sexist pig.

All kidding aside, good article. Should help lots of people get their girlfriends to at least take a look at gaming.

Nice. My love interest is into Nazi Zombies, I'm glad I know where to go after that.

Cool. Never would have guessed about the Silent Hill; but makes sense. BTW, I read Coulter's stuff, guess that makes me an alien parasite.

im assuming your joking greed or do you enjoy people calling you a twat?

@FalconMbuster yeah this has brought back memories of arguments and tears (for the girl not me) then again i think her asking me to go shopping with her (for fucking clothes!) instead of talking to my freinds on xbox live was a step to far. For those to young never ever agree to go shopping for clothes its boring on your own let alone standing outside claires accesories for over an hour! (personal experience and scarring shown here)

after you beat resi 5 and get infinite ammo, turn the lights out, and let her go thru with you again in split screen co-op and just protect her or nudge her in the right direction(if she asks)when she gets stuck, she actually got a rush from blowing shit up in the car chase and after we beat the giant majini together she raped me

Well, I just got my girlfriend to try out Peggle and within a matter of days she beat all the challenges... Guess it is time to step up a level or two...

I actually have a few female friends of mine that love fighting games...as long as you give them a handicap, they seem to enjoy it. Well, Soul Calibur 4 anyway.

Also true on girls not liking CoD. They were like, "Quit being mean to the little british boys!" "But he called me a loser." "I don't care, it's not nice." lol.

I've had the "conversation" in Rule 2 more often than I care to admit.

I love Peggle.

I think fighting games are fairly girl-friendly, they just aren't likely to play more than a few matches. And my girlfriend often asks why I keep playing a game that I've spent so much time yelling at, not noticing all the time spent happily blowing off peoples' heads or landing cool jumps or whatever, before I get to the parts that make me string together profanities and almost twist my controller in half. Accurate article, I say.

I might absolutely fail when it comes to even getting a female's attention for more then 5 seconds however I do have a very good friend who has a girlfriend and while she hates playing video games, she loves watching him play them.

They have figured out a common love for Survival Horror games so he has been playing alot of Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and older Resident Evil (Him and her both strongly dislike the last two games).

So no, Tyler is not wrong in his assumption (Though I would call it fact as my sister also loves the Silent Hill and the older Resident Evil games as well) that women love a good Survival Horror game.

Anyways, great article man!

Survival horror, for whatever reason, seems to be a common thread when I ask people about this.

Some of this is so true! like I was sitting around with my girl friend and my friend and his lady, and we were getting bored, so my friend turns on my xbox, puts on Peggle and we all have a blast taking turns between levels or when we lose its fun fun fun for everyone
