E3 1995 - 2009 in video

The rise, fall and resurrection of the greatest show on Earth

Words: Justin Towell, GamesRadar UK

Looks like the Greatest Show on Earth might finally be approaching some semblence of its former self this year after the downsizing debacle of a couple of years ago. Yep, it's almost E3 time again, folks, and in preparation of another week of sleep deprivation and adrenaline overload, we've compiled a whole timeline of old E3 videos from YouTube and our own archives to get you in the mood.

From major announcements to the most spectacular stands on the show floor, a real-life Ulala from Space Channel 5 (with a real life short skirt), or a King of Fighters bout with actual people, there's something weird and wonderful here for everyone. So let's start at the beginning...

Back in 1995, if any game was worth making a song and dance about, it was Killer Instinct. These lovely ladies took that thought to its logical conclusion, with some lovely outfits to boot.

Then there was SNK's Neo Geo CD. Amazing to think this was once a viable current gen system (well... kinda). And this lengthy choregraphed 'fight' between three SNK favourites was surprisingly entertaining.

And although the same can be said for this shorter Mortal Kombat 3 reenactment, there's disappointingly little gore considering its subject matter. That, and the cameraman prefers to watch the men than the girl.

By 1996, the show had really hit its stride, and the fledgling Saturn and PSone were being given a run for their money by the appearance of the N64. This montage shows the show floor chaos in full, wonderful effect. By the way, the '1997' caption at the start is wrong, this is definitely 1996.

And of course this was the year we had that tantalising glimpse of Sonic Xtreme - the 3D Sonic title that never was. If you squint a bit, you can see some of the tear stains from all the Sega fans over the years.

And then there was the small matter of a little game called Metal Gear Solid, which got its first trailer. A CG interpretation and not really indicative of the actual game's feel, but still - very interesting for fans of the series.

A good first few years for E3, but the best was yet to come...

Ell223: Agreed. That "man carved from a slab of meat" description still sticks in my head. Thanks GR.

Also, I was going to go to E3 08! Thank god I didn't.

Oh my God, I can't believe it's already been close to 5 years since Twilight Princess was unveiled. *Sigh* Watching that video put chills up my spine, I wish I could have been there.

You all are going to be so disappointed, yet again.

Judging by it current state from last year, there will be more demos of sovelware everywhere with more Wiis and wand crap than you can handle, with even more boring presidations and boring speeches than ever

I also notice that ever since E3 05, Nobody have ever cuss since. No "Kicking ass and taking names", no additude, no intimination. E3 wanted an "boring as hell" business event and they finally perfected it in 08.

This new format is going to be "family friendly" based on the crappy Wii games that was forced down our throats in the past 3 years. As soon as E3 09 is over, you are going to have an even more sour taste in your mouth then last year.

Let's face it: The good old hardcore days of gaming are long over and will never go back, no matter how many kick ass games Capcom and the rest of the companies who still give a damn about "true" videogames kick out.

This is really a sad time to be an "true" gamer these days.

I'm hoping Nintendo learned its lesson.... Anyone notice how Reggie seems to announcing any of the gay Wii games? I wonder if he hates this casual shit too :)

Those 2000 Sega shows were epic. Jet set Radio must be the coolest game ever made.

At least with booth babes back it could distract us if the the games are crap.

WOW. Nintendo bet get its shit together if they want to keep their hardcore audience and why is Reggie such a homosexual!

It's probably a good thing non gaming press didn't show up for the 2000 E3, I'm not sure I was old enough to see that!
