Halo Wars

Do you need Halo 3's newest maps?

Our expert impressions and custom videos help you decide

Words: Lizzie Cuevas, GamesRadar US

We could’ve sworn we finished the fight after the release of Halo 3 in September 2007, but Bungie’s going to make sure we finish the fight again and again by releasing the Mythic map pack on March 3rd. But don’t get too anxious to log in to Xbox Live Marketplace to download it – this new map pack will only be available if you purchase the Limited Edition of Ensemble Studios’ Halo Wars, a new strategy game based on the Halo franchise. Unless you want to wait until later on in the spring to download the Mythic map pack for 800 Microsoft Points, be prepared to shell out 80 greenbacks for a game you might not even want (we can already see confused folks trying to return their copy of Halo Wars and asking where the hell Master Chief was). So the real question is, is it worth it? We’ve played through all three new maps included in the Mythic map pack and reveal the good, bad and the ugly.

Sandbox

At first glance, this map is very basic. It’s set in desert terrain and is almost symmetrical in that there is a red base at one end and a blue base directly mirroring it on the other end. The bases and surrounding structures closely resemble old Aztec-influenced pyramids. Warthogs, Choppers, and Mongooses are generously stationed in this map. However, Sandbox’s key feature is actually its definitive Forge canvas.

Sandbox’s wholly Forge-ready map is definitely a step out of the box for Bungie, offering three different levels of Forgey goodness. The first level is the deserty default level Sandbox is known as in basic matchmaking. Hilly sand dunes surround a tiled floor area with the mirroring bases on top of it. The second level is actually the underground level to this parched paradise, closed off with high-ceiling stone walls. This makes for an excellent arena for creating custom Grisball games, which we were luckily acquainted with during matchmaking. The last level is a massive, open grid dubbed the “sky bubble” that sits in the sky above the first level. It is accessible via teleporter in Forge and anything goes for Forge enthusiasts as this level allows limitless possibilities for level design.

I continue to play Halo quite a bit, even though it infuriates me sometimes. I look forward to new map releases to spice things up a bit. I just wish that Bungie would incorporate more Forged maps into matchmaking.

Well yes, it does sound fun and it's good to hear they keep updating the game but...I think Bungie is abusing. Anything with the word "Halo" on it is now expensive, limited and unique, and their selling methods are goddly-money-making-tactics over normal sales, which are kinda unfair for most of the public.

Hope they don't throw me to the sun with the giant sling shot for saying this. :<

well, as if i didn't already want Halo Wars, now i have another reason to get it. However, i do wish that they remade Ascension. One of my old favorite maps, and Tower of Power just doesnt work on any of Halo 3's maps.

Sandbox looks as retarded as Sandtrap (Expect for forge, because that the only fun part of Sandtrap), but all the other maps look fun, especially the Assembly.

I only want this map pack instead of *shudder* "ODST" (WHY DID YOU CHANGE THE AWESOME NAME TO THIS SHAME OF A WORD, BUNGIE? WHY????) because I want to see how they hide the "skulls" in a non-campaign map and I need new Halo 3 content in order to keep me occupied until better games return.

Adding things will not make this game better,
Halo 1 for single player,
And Halo 2 for multiplayer
None of this stupid Halo 3 shit

I want to hurry up and get these maps out sooner. The unit im in has put in weeks of work findin our stradigies for the normal maps and i think this will be annoying but yet a challenge when we have to learn new maps.

The maps look not so good.
I would buy the maps for obvious reasons like it costs a lot and second i have on money and finally bad satellite internet so no one can play online with me. (tears rolling down face)

- Though it still hasn’t caught on to trendier multiplayer modes like Gears of War 2’s “Horde” and Call of Duty’s “Nazi Zombies,” -

I don't think it needs or intends to catch on. I love Halo 3 online, and I don't really like online shooters, but I don't really play unless friends are. Hopefully more maps will get them back for a bit more.

Orbital looks perfect for a game of infection, it winds around itself and has tons of halls, and it just seems to have that kind of dark atmosphere about it that says "Zombies in space"
