A history of videogame chainsaw killings

The evolution of Buzz-Argh-Squelch action throughout the ages

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

Resident Evil 4 | Gamecube | 2005

Things were now getting very impressive indeed. The state of Resi 4's graphics would have made us fall in unbreakable love with it had it merely been a collection of still-frame photographs which sporadically punched us in the face, but with the inclusion of the most pant-twistingly menacing chainsaw killer yet (his ominous signature sound effect even beat ZAMN's, fuggodsake!), it could have stabbed us in the eyes with hot pokers and we'd still have given it at least a 9 out of 10.

Evil Dead: Regeneration | Multi | 2005

It came out hot on the tail of Resi 4. It featured the most iconic and inventive chainsaw weapon in horror cinema. It had Bruce bloody Campbell in it! Was it the greatest chainsaw-killing-based game yet?

No. No, it wasn't overly impressive at all. Moving swiftly on...

Scarface | Multi | 2006

Al Pacino. Cocaine. Chainsaw murder. Giorgio Moroder New Wave synth. It couldn't crystalise the spirit of the '80s any more effectively if it was wearing a rah-rah skirt.

Gears of War 2 | Xbox 360 | 2008

Do we need to explain this one? Do we? Do we really? Have any of you not spent the last week exploding glorious, viscous Locust blood all over your screen with whirring metal shark teeth?

With Gears, we witnessed the evolution of the humble chainsaw into something rivalling the wonder of the Heavens themselves, through the simple but epoch-defining inspiration to attach them to bloody huge great guns. Gears 2 was chosen over the original for this feature for the simple fact that co-op play proves that two blades into one Locust will go.

MadWorld | Wii | 2009

It's chainsaw murder. It looks like Sin City. It sounds like The Running Man spliced with Smash TV. It's coming from the guys behind Okami, Viewtiful Joe and God Hand. It's on the Wii! Nintendo's little white waggle wonder justified for the entirety of 2009? Quite possibly so friends, quite possibly so.

Figures that Gears and Resident Evil would be on there.

Great article though!

Dead Rising should be included. You can just camp out in the hardware stores and chainsaw as many zombies as you want! Mmm, juicy.

Gears wins simply because I find it more fun to run up holding B and watch Marcus carve them up.

Too bad they didn't make this in time for Halloween.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, but I was almost positive MadWorld was going to be all black & white with red blood. It's just some crazy artsy style.

But what about Dead Rising? That game featured full-body dismemberment of ZOMBIES with dual Mini-Chainsaws obtained from a psycho clown / childrens entertainer, who was killed by falling on his OWN chainsaws!
